[Bug 1097050] [NEW] d-root ipv4 has changed. Update db.root to show this

2013-01-07 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

According to http://www.root-servers.org/ and http://d.root-
servers.org/renumber.html the D.Root server has changed its ipv4. I
quote the message below

D-Root is Changing its IPv4 Address on 3 January 2013
This is advance notice that there is a scheduled change to the IPv4 address for
one of the authorities listed for the DNS root zone and the .ARPA TLD. The
change is to D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET, which is administered by the University of
Maryland.

The new IPv4 address for this authority is 199.7.91.13

the /etc/bind/db.root file in bind needs to be changed to reflect this.

34c34
 D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. 360 A 128.8.10.90
---
 D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. 360 A 199.7.91.13

The notice also states that the old ip will only be available for at
least 6 months so this change should probably be applied before then.

[Bug 1097050] Re: d-root ipv4 has changed. Update db.root to show this

2013-01-07 Thread Mark
The official new zone file can be found at
ftp://ftp.internic.net/domain/named.root and the diff to the current
version is as follows.

12,13c12,13
 ; last update:Jun 17, 2010

---
 ; last update:Jan 3, 2013

---
 D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. 360 A 199.7.91.13
 D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET.360    2001:500:2D::D

The notice says the ipv6 address is staying the same so apparently it was
supposed to be in bind all along but for some reason, never was.

[Bug 1090593] Re: D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET changing January 3rd 2013

2013-01-07 Thread Mark
In response to Robie, As far as i'm aware, a recursive server will pick
a random root name server to fetch the list of root name servers from.
If this happens to be the D root server old ip is offline, it'll stall
briefly while trying to connect to it. Granted it's only a once off and
a 1/13 chance of happening. Considering it's such an easy patch, no
reason not to apply it though.

2013-01-08 Thread Mark
If it's not a trivial change or has potential for unexpected problems
then, fair enough i agree. Just leave it out until at least bind pushes
out a new version with the updated zone file. I suppose a 1/13 chance of
a minor delay on the first query to a server after reboot isn't much to
worry about.

http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/cve/2009/CVE-2009-0796.html
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron): ignored (reached end-of-life)

I happily accept that the desktop version has reached end of life.
However the server version has support until April 2013.

The comment above says that the bug was fixed in 2.0.4 in February 2010,
which was within the support period even for Hardy desktop!

What is the point of having LTS versions if you still fail to patch
issues which have been fixed already in other versions within the
support period!

Well, revB comes with a bundled USB

still connect it when running linux and work :)

No it does not and no we cannot. Bluetooth-only input was a stock

[Bug 24521] Bug remains in Dapper final

2006-06-14 Thread Mark
Used text installer for Dapper 6.0.6 final.

The boot prompt accepts bluetooth keyboard input (l for Linux, x for Mac
OS X, and all that). Bootup sequence is normal. At login screen,
Dapper fails to detect keyboard/mouse input.

Note the silliness here, as the little bootloader manages to handle
bluetooth keyboard inputs, and fully booted Dapper does not.

Result is that user cannot log in.

[Bug 32415] Dapper final iMac G5 blows it and we give up

2006-06-15 Thread Mark
After following all advice about removing bluez and turning sound off:
our test unit is still completely unusable.

We apparently have the worst of all possible worlds - a G5 system with
the known sound and power (fan) problems, but also the bluetooth
problems.

The root prompt from Linux single occasionally just hangs,
particularly inside the vim editor. We managed to edit gdm.conf to shut
sound off and also use apt to remove bluez, but only with multiple
reboots between editing attempts.

Regular bootup produces the GDM login, which is now barely functional
We can type the user login data, but then GDM simply hangs with a
stationary mouse cursor on screen and nothing else. We have original
Apple wireless mouse and keyboard (no USB, sorry).

DAPPER FINAL DOES NOT FUNCTION ON OUR SYSTEM AT ALL EVEN WITH THE KNOWN
WORKAROUNDS.

We're puzzled by the priority assignments of these dramatic hardware
bugs. Bugs which completely prevent use of the OS merit maximum
priority. Some of these bugs have been lying around a long time, too.

[Bug 23445] Re: iMac G5 will freeze after booting up

2006-08-25 Thread Mark
Ben said: we cannot buy every piece of hardware that doesn't work or
that we want to support. It's not a matter of money, it's more a matter
of space.

Your viewpoint is in effect we have enough Macs already. I might
sympathize if these bugs were not so ancient, glaring, and cemented into
a final release even after multiple user reports and months of time.
There was a reason to say that you need actual hardware.

Ben, there have been, and still are, plenty of G5 testers. The test
pool is not the problem.

We *already know* where the problems live - bluetooth sound. The
point you're missing is basic. The bugs themselves are what demand
developer hardware, not picky users.

Testing in the face of such serious bugs is not something users should
do. Some bugs need hardware to solve right. Example - I could not type
into yaboot.conf. Glitches froze everything in the middle of editing.
It was a race against time to change a single line. That kind of thing
makes user testing impossible. Yes I used single mode and every
other trick. I tried every user-forum workaround, removing bluetooth
packages, all of it. Nothing helped. If I were an Ubuntu developer
with debug output screens and source familiarity, I would know what to
do. That is why these bugs call for hardware.

Bugs that sit unsolved for endless months, AND are crashing-kernel
severity, AND prevent user boot, AND have multiple corroboration
reports, AND have known code locations (sound/bluetooth), merit
hardware. Code this broken needs serious developer attention on the
actual box. With hardware you'll have them fixed in short order.
Without it Ubuntu will continue pretending to support hardware that it
doesn't.

That you have other PPC machines is nice but irrelevant. Either Ubuntu
supports the iMac G5 or not. If not, take it off the list of supported
hardware.

Your office should not be full of hardware that works, but hardware that
won't.  My advice?  Put one of those working G3/G4s in the closet;
replace it with a G5. Desk space is then unchanged. No closet? Rent a
public storage unit.

At least the G3/4 crowd can boot up and do proper user testing. I
can't.

P.S. Make that bluetooth/sound/power-manager (fans). So there are at
least three (3) hardware-specific bugs of maximum severity peculiar to
this hardware. This is the kind of place where Ubuntu could really,

I have had Ubuntu 6.06.1

The installation (home partition 23 Gig, and / 10 Gig and 1 Gig swap file) on

goes well, the last step after the installation is ejecting the CD rom, the
laptop doesn't want to reboot after pressing Enter or Return. I've just
switched the laptop off the cold way (pressed the power button on the laptop
for a while).
The 6.10 boots normally (I can't see error messages since there is a
Spashscreen).
The system works normally and everything works, sound and internet IPW2200
driver works.
Only when I want to reboot by pressing the red button in upper right and
pressing restart or shutdown, the laptop seems to shutdown many processes but
is hanging on the very end. This is with restarting (rebooting) and shutting
down 6.10.

[Bug 68607] Re: No direct rendering by default with i810/i815 video

2007-10-24 Thread Mark
I have a machine which uses i810 video. I set the VideoRam parameter to
16384 and the X screen depth to 16 bits by editing xorg.conf and that
allowed me to enable DRI.

To make doing that easier, the Screens and Graphics applet should be
modified to allow the user to set the screen depth (and possibly
VideoRam parameter too). Editing xorg.conf is not very user-friendly.
Plus it's a real hassle to switch between 16- and 24-bit.

Apart from DRI, there are other reasons for wanting a 16-bit desktop. It
is faster and uses less memory bandwidth. i810 systems are memory-
bandwidth-constrained anyway, so reducing bandwidth helps overall system
speed.

2008-11-09 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

I am an runing Kubuntu Intrepid on a Thinkpad R50e with all updates
installed. The xserver keeps crashing in an unreproducable way.
Sometimes immediately after login, sometimes I have 10 minutes,
sometimes event 30. I can see which behaviour causes this. LSPCI is
attached. Xorg-log is a bit complicated since a new log seems to be
started after relogin.

[Bug 294508] [NEW] sound is broken in ubuntu 8.10

2008-11-05 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

Installed fresh ubuntu 8.10. After running flash 10 videos (youtube),
sounds quits working the next day. This has happened twice. I have a
Gigabyte board with built in audio. Never had a problem over the last 6
months with Fedora 9. Something is broken.

I play a couple you tube videos, drink a beer and go to sleep. Next day
I come home, browse some websites, try some youtube, no sound.

Sound is broken for sure.

[Bug 16722] Re: Something needs to set the region code on new DVD drives

2008-11-06 Thread Mark
The bug exists in intrepid too. I use Kubuntu. A few weeks ago I had to
replace the existing DVD drive. I hadn't played a DVD yet, but
everything else worked. So I thought the drive was broken again, when it
failed to play several DVDs and I did not get any error message. Only
when I fired up Windows I learned what the problem was. I was
immediately asked to set the region code, when starting to play the DVD.
After doing this, it worked with Kubuntu too. So it would be really
great, if one would receive an error message or even better, if Kubuntu
gave the possibility to set the region code.

[Bug 286278] [NEW] me-tv sydney channel 7 scan

2008-10-20 Thread mark
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: me-tv

Hi, I am new here so please put up with me. I am running HH 8.04 on a
Core 2 duo PC. I installed me-tv using add-remove programs. It installed
ok and I did a channel scan. It did not discovery Channel 7 but all
other channels are good. I thought about the antenna and cables, but I
have tried Myth-Tv and that discovered 7 no problems , so its not the
antenna or cables. I am a computer dummy and because of the ease of what
I've seen so far, would prefer to use me-tv rather than Mythtv. I am in
the sutherland area of sydney. Can you please give me a dummy's step by
step of how I may fix me-tv so it will discover channel 7.

I am using an ASUS U3100 Mini USB HDTV card.

I think me-tv is version 0.5.17-1

Thanks for your patience.

Mark

Re: [Bug 286278] Re: me-tv sydney channel 7 scan

2008-10-20 Thread mark
Hi Michael,

Thanks for your ultra quick assistance. In answer to your questions I
provide:

1. The region I scanned was the 3 provided for Sydney. They are 2 for
North Shore and 1 for Kings Cross. None discovered channel 7.

2. I have tried scanning with all available east cost regions but none
find channel 7.

3. I am a real dummy when it comes to command code, so I do not
understand what you mean when you say Now, all you have to do to
get Me TV to rescan is `rm ~/.me-tv/channels.conf`, Can you spell it out
for me. That is to say, step 1 do this, step 2 do that and so on??:-)

I look forward to your continued assistance.

Kind regards
Mark

look in /usr/share/doc/dvb-utils/examples/scan/dvb-t, it might jog your

Now, all you have to do to get Me TV to rescan is `rm ~/.me-

updated for the new Guard Interval.

Well, that's assuming that I'm not a complete loon.

[Bug 174403] Re: 7.10 /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal failed

2008-02-09 Thread mark
I'm having similar problems.

Printer: Brother HL-5150D
OS: Fresh install of kubuntu 7.10 from the alternative disc (text install
method) - as downloaded 2008-02-09.

I'm getting various problems - they seem to be permission related.

The problem goes away when I do the following:

# cd dev
# chmod 777 usb* usb/*

I can now print. I was unable to add the printer until I did this.

As soon as I reboot, the problem returns. The problem must be with
hal/dbus setting the permissions wrong, and I'm sure I can fix it with a
bit more effort. I'm reporting this as a bug because it's a fresh
install, so I assume its not something I've done

Thanks,

Mark

[Bug 191182] [NEW] 6.06.02 2.6.15-51-server soft lockup on cpu#0 on shutdown/umount xfs partition on /dev/md0

2008-02-11 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-51-server

Have /home on xfs partition on /dev/md0, RAID1 array which is shared via
nfs.

Get sporadic soft lockups when trying to shutdown my 6.06.02 machine.

I can sometimes reproduce if I try to umount /home from the terminal
rather than letting the shutdown scripts do it for me, e.g sync; then
/etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server stop; umount /home

However sometimes the machine manages to shutdown on its own.

System appears responsive to Alt+SysReq+. but doesnt always give the
output expected.

Have twice gotten a backtrace out of the machine which looks like
(written down from photos);

Pid: 6345, comm: umount

 [c0103313] sysenter_past_esp+0x54/0x75

Not sure if this is because I tried to umount the fs to help the machine
shutdown with Alt+SysReq+U.

Once I managed to get a list of running tasks which showed that only;

xfsbufd
rc
S40umountfs
S40umountfs
umount

were running.

Any more information I can supply to help?

[Bug 156070] Re: Failed Upgrade tool signature when using do-release-upgrade

2008-02-12 Thread Mark
Ok, it was a while ago, but I think the reason I was getting this error
is because I had accidentally truncated my meta-release file, which I
had to create manually because it wasn't included in any package at the
time. I think it is included in newer releases.

[Bug 156013] Re: No Sound from Speakers, but Headphones work

2008-03-10 Thread Mark
I also have a Presario 2700 Laptop and have been trying to get the sound
to output from my laptop speakers for weeks. I've tried everything I
could find in the forums, the help guides, etc. I've even recompiled
with ALSA Driver 1.0.16 using Module-intel8x0 from the alsa project and
still no sound. I've tried muting and unmuting all possible things in
the alsamixer. I've tried booting other linux live cd's and none of
them output sound from the speakers. What else can be done to fix this
bug. I'd be happy to try anything anyone has a suggestion to try.
Thanks.

p.s. I posted a question about this problem previously but never found
a solution that worked. Here's a link to that post:

[Bug 174403] Re: 7.10 /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal failed

2008-03-11 Thread mark
I managed to fix this one by doing the following (as root or with
sudo):

# dpkg -l | grep cups

remove all of the above listed packages with:

# dpkg --purge package names

then reinstalling cups:

# apt-get install cups

I think one of the packages I had installed (cupsys-hal perhaps) was
causing problems. After removing all packages cups related, and
reinstalling the minimum necessary to do the job, things started working
again.

I still consider this to be a bug - perhaps there is an undocumented
conflict happening.

[Bug 148701] Re: Search function in File browser does not function

2008-02-02 Thread Mark
Hi guys,

I originally reported this bug while occasionally flirting with Ubuntu A
QUARTER YEAR AGO. It's VERY disappointing to find out that this bug is
still there. We're not talking here about wrong font in help or bad
indentation somewhere. This is a search function for god's sake! I'm a
fan of Linux in a sense that I like to see it's getting more popular but
how is this sustainable if these blatant mistakes stay there? Very
disappointing :-/ I know this is not a forum but someone, please fix it!

Thanks,
Marek

nautilus) becomes unstable and i can no more open my files, or launch
applications from a desktop shortcut (nothing happens);
when i try to open a file with right click - open a popup appears saying
that child communication pipe creation failed (too many files opened)

if i try to launch an application from the menù it works, if i use
console to launch applications everything works, if i log out and log in
again the system comes back to a normal state.

i dont know how to reproduce this bug, and the standard logfiles
(kern.log, syslog auth.log etc etc) report nothing :(

[Bug 73064] Re: I can't set the background, other glitches

2007-11-14 Thread Mark
It's been quite some time since this happened, and I've since
reinstalled and got things working quite well. IIRC, the problem was
that the wm* commands simply were not working at all.

I do not remember the solution, but I do remember that it involved
deleting the GNUStep directory and possibly reinstalling the package.
Feel free to close the bug if it suits you, I am not having any issues
with the application.

[Bug 164945] Re: cups is broken after upgrade

2007-11-25 Thread Mark
Here is what I am seeing. After a reboot of the print server, the
printer is online and reachable. I go to my desktop machine and print a
document. The printer starts printing then stops midstream. Sending
additional documents go into the que but the printer is stopped.

I go to the printing applet on the server and check the status. Status
is stopped. When i click the policies tab, the enabled box is
unchecked. If i click enable, the printer immediately starts printing.

Any idea what is happening? Should i go back to the previous cups
binaries?

2007-11-25 Thread Mark
By the way, I am using a HP D2400 series printer. It is fully supported
and I never had a problem before.

One interesting thing to note, This problem also happened on Fedora 8.
I thought it was a Fedora problem so i reloaded the OS to Ubuntu. I
suspect the new cups packages since they were updated recently on both
Fedora and Ubuntu.

Tim Waugh wrote:
I wonder if we should turn off queue disabling for HP printers.

The report that Fedora 8 behaves the same way is interesting though --
for the Fedora 8 release I took out the code that disables queues, so no
queues should have been disabled. (Perhaps the reporter meant Fedora 8
 test 1 or similar.)

Is a patch going to be pushed for Gutsy?

[Bug 174283] Re: rm does not preserve root by default

2008-01-21 Thread Mark
Just to prove to experienced users that --preserve-root by default is a benefit:
I consider myself a seasoned Linux user. Been using Linux for more than a
decade. I recently toasted a filesystem with rm -rf /. What I actually typed
though was something like:

f=/path/to/somedir rm -rf $f/ ; some_command $f; cp something
$f/somewhere

Looks safe? Look again, I forgot a semicolon after f=/path/to/somedir.
Effectively that was the same as type rm -rf /. If you want to try this
out and not toast your root file system do this:

f=/home/user; echo rm -rf $f/
then this:
f=
f=/home/user echo rm -rf $f/

And see what would have ran without the echo. I'm a lot more paranoid
about typing rm as root now. I always stop before pressing the enter
key. If you don't think you would ever type something like this, think
about any scripts you may have written where you call rm with a
variable. Are you sure the variable got set? I'm posting semi-
anonymously out of embarassment. *hangs-head-in-shame*

[Bug 176329] Thinkpad R50e does not Suspend to Ram if external hub is connected

2007-12-14 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

I have a Thinkpad R50, running Kubuntu Gutsy. Suspend to Ram works in
general, but not if my external USB-Hub is connected. It also seems to
slow down hibernate, when it is connected. There are some messages
indicating that the USB hub will not suspend. Sorry, I do not know which
package to report this correctly, so someone correct me, if I am wrong

 add to eclipse.ini:

Cleared up my frequent crashing. Really a pain to have to deal with
