[Bug 1097050] [NEW] d-root ipv4 has changed. Update db.root to show this
Public bug reported: According to http://www.root-servers.org/ and http://d.root- servers.org/renumber.html the D.Root server has changed its ipv4. I quote the message below D-Root is Changing its IPv4 Address on 3 January 2013 This is advance notice that there is a scheduled change to the IPv4 address for one of the authorities listed for the DNS root zone and the .ARPA TLD. In response to Robie, As far as i'm aware, a recursive server will pick a random root name server to fetch the list of root name servers from. [Bug 1090593] Re: D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET changing January 3rd 2013
If it's not a trivial change or has potential for unexpected problems then, fair enough i agree. Just leave it out until at least bind pushes out a new version with the updated zone file. [Bug 32415] Dapper final iMac G5 blows it and we give up
After following all advice about removing bluez and turning sound off: our test unit is still completely unusable. We apparently have the worst of all possible worlds - a G5 system with the known sound and power (fan) problems, but also the bluetooth problems. The root prompt from Linux single occasionally just hangs, particularly inside the vim editor. We managed to edit gdm.conf to shut sound off and also use apt to remove bluez, but only with multiple reboots between editing attempts. Regular bootup produces the GDM login, which is now barely functional We can type the user login data, but then GDM simply hangs with a stationary mouse cursor on screen and nothing else. We have original Apple wireless mouse and keyboard (no USB, sorry). DAPPER FINAL DOES NOT FUNCTION ON OUR SYSTEM AT ALL EVEN WITH THE KNOWN WORKAROUNDS. We're puzzled by the priority assignments of these dramatic hardware bugs. Bugs which completely prevent use of the OS merit maximum priority. [Bug 23445] Re: iMac G5 will freeze after booting up
Ben said: we cannot buy every piece of hardware that doesn't work or that we want to support. It's not a matter of money, it's more a matter of space. Your viewpoint is in effect we have enough Macs already. I might sympathize if these bugs were not so ancient, glaring, and cemented into a final release even after multiple user reports and months of time. There was a reason to say that you need actual hardware. Ben, there have been, and still are, plenty of G5 testers. The test pool is not the problem. We *already know* where the problems live - bluetooth sound. The point you're missing is basic. The bugs themselves are what demand developer hardware, not picky users. Testing in the face of such serious bugs is not something users should do. Some bugs need hardware to solve right. Example - I could not type into yaboot.conf. Glitches froze everything in the middle of editing. It was a race against time to change a single line. That kind of thing makes user testing impossible. Yes I used single mode and every other trick. I tried every user-forum workaround, removing bluetooth packages, all of it. Nothing helped. If I were an Ubuntu developer with debug output screens and source familiarity, I would know what to do. That is why these bugs call for hardware. Bugs that sit unsolved for endless months, AND are crashing-kernel severity, AND prevent user boot, AND have multiple corroboration reports, AND have known code locations (sound/bluetooth), merit hardware. Code this broken needs serious developer attention on the actual box. With hardware you'll have them fixed in short order. Without it Ubuntu will continue pretending to support hardware that it doesn't. That you have other PPC machines is nice but irrelevant. Either Ubuntu supports the iMac G5 or not. If not, take it off the list of supported hardware. Your office should not be full of hardware that works, but hardware that won't. My advice? Put one of those working G3/G4s in the closet; replace it with a G5. Desk space is then unchanged. No closet? Rent a public storage unit. At least the G3/4 crowd can boot up and do proper user testing. I can't. -- iMac G5 will freeze after booting up https://launchpad.net/bugs/23445 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 68607] Re: No direct rendering by default with i810/i815 video
I have a machine which uses i810 video. I set the VideoRam parameter to 16384 and the X screen depth to 16 bits by editing xorg.conf and that allowed me to enable DRI. To make doing that easier, the Screens and Graphics applet should be modified to allow the user to set the screen depth (and possibly VideoRam parameter too). Editing xorg.conf is not very user-friendly. Plus it's a real hassle to switch between 16- and 24-bit. Apart from DRI, there are other reasons for wanting a 16-bit desktop. Re: [Bug 286278] Re: me-tv sydney channel 7 scan
Hi Michael, Thanks for your ultra quick assistance. In answer to your questions I provide: 1. The region I scanned was the 3 provided for Sydney. They are 2 for North Shore and 1 for Kings Cross. None discovered channel 7. 2. I have tried scanning with all available east cost regions but none find channel 7. 3. I am a real dummy when it comes to command code, so I do not understand what you mean when you say Now, all you have to do to get Me TV to rescan is `rm ~/.me-tv/channels.conf`, Can you spell it out for me. I managed to fix this one by doing the following (as root or with sudo): # dpkg -l | grep cups remove all of the above listed packages with: # dpkg --purge package names then reinstalling cups: # apt-get install cups I think one of the packages I had installed (cupsys-hal perhaps) was causing problems. After removing all packages cups related, and reinstalling the minimum necessary to do the job, things started working again. I still consider this to be a bug - perhaps there is an undocumented conflict happening. -- 7.10 /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal failed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/174403 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 148701] Re: Search function in File browser does not function
Hi guys, I originally reported this bug while occasionally flirting with Ubuntu A QUARTER YEAR AGO. It's VERY disappointing to find out that this bug is still there. We're not talking here about wrong font in help or bad indentation somewhere. This is a search function for god's sake! I'm a fan of Linux in a sense that I like to see it's getting more popular but how is this sustainable if these blatant mistakes stay there? [Bug 174283] Re: rm does not preserve root by default
Just to prove to experienced users that --preserve-root by default is a benefit: I consider myself a seasoned Linux user. Been using Linux for more than a decade. I recently toasted a filesystem with rm -rf /. What I actually typed though was something like: f=/path/to/somedir rm -rf $f/ ; some_command $f; cp something $f/somewhere Looks safe? Look again, I forgot a semicolon after f=/path/to/somedir. Effectively that was the same as type rm -rf /. If you want to try this out and not toast your root file system do this: f=/home/user; echo rm -rf $f/ then this: f= f=/home/user echo rm -rf $f/ And see what would have ran without the echo. I'm a lot more paranoid about typing rm as root now. I always stop before pressing the enter key. If you don't think you would ever type something like this, think about any scripts you may have written where you call rm with a variable. Are you sure the variable got set? I went to add/remove programs and Evolution was no longer checked, so I reinstalled it and all is good. + + This happened this morning: 4/29/2008 -- Update of Hardy Heron removed Evolution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/224178 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 213788] Re: hardy alternate install disk hangs on select and installing software 85%
I have a similar problem. Using the 8.04 x86 alternate CD (as opposed to amd64 in the original post), I was trying to install with encrypted partition in one LVM volume. The installer crashes while selecting and installing software at 85%. I've had it happen twice now. I'm installing onto a Toshiba dynabook CX/3214CMSW. -- hardy alternate install disk hangs on select and installing software 85% https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213788 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 228633] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 Freezes
Hi there, I experience the same thing on the Acer TravelMate 4500. With Fn F7 I can switch off the touchpad and it does not happen again. I use an external mouse instead of the touchpad.
