Re: [ubuntu-in] Ubuntu-IN Hosting Issues

2009-01-10 Thread Baishampayan Ghose
This is a tangent but is there a reputable VPS host with servers located in
India? I'm more latency than cost sensitive for this application.

What exactly do you plan to achieve in the 100ms that you'll shave off?

Peering between ISPs in India still leaves a lot to be desired. So if you get
a server co-located/hosted at a particular ISPs data center. You'll have low
latency only if you are customer of that ISP. Customers of other ISPs may
have to make a round the world trip to get to the server.

Latency isn't that big an issue considering we get ping times of ~250ms to
europe and ~300ms to the US these days.

FWIW ubuntu-in.info has a lower latency than google.com

... and our VPS is located somewhere in the EU (possibly France).

Regards,
BG

Hi, I came across this today. It says it can make puppy linux axcessable, but
the reason I think some people here may have interest is because It can be
installed in ubuntu, so some people may find it useful.

I tried the recorder, and it seems accessible, but I didn't get any sound
when I pressed the play button. I only had a few minutes, so I will try this
later. Also, I used Orca and only used foksy. Ifoksy starts yasr and
speech-dispatcher. But I got a error with speech-dispatcher. However, foksy
works fine with Orca.
Hope this is of use to someone. Mike.

OpenSSL, Bind, NTP vulnerabilities

2009-01-10 Thread Savvas Radevic
You are advised to upgrade and reboot your system as soon as possible
if you are using the Internet.

USN-706-1: Bind vulnerability: http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-706-1
CVE-2009-0025
It was discovered that Bind did not properly perform certificate
verification. When DNSSEC with DSA certificates are in use, a remote
attacker could exploit this to bypass certificate validation to spoof
DNS entries and poison DNS caches. Among other things, this could lead
to misdirected email and web traffic.

USN-705-1: NTP vulnerability: http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-705-1
CVE-2009-0021
It was discovered that NTP did not properly perform signature
verification. A remote attacker could exploit this to bypass
certificate validation via a malformed SSL/TLS signature.

USN-704-1: OpenSSL vulnerability: http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-704-1
CVE-2008-5077
It was discovered that OpenSSL did not properly perform signature
verification on DSA and ECDSA keys. If user or automated system
connected to a malicious server or a remote attacker were able to
perform a man-in-the-middle attack, this flaw could be exploited to
view sensitive information.

Important Note: openssl upgrade requires a reboot for changes to take effect!

All Ubuntu security notices can be viewed at: http://www.ubuntu.com/usn

Subject: [FreeBSD-Announce] FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE Available
To: freebsd-annou...@freebsd.org

The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team is pleased to announce the availability
of FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE. This is the second release from the 7-STABLE branch
which improves on the functionality of FreeBSD 7.0 and introduces some
new features. Some of the highlights:

   - The ULE scheduler is now the default in GENERIC kernels for
amd64 and i386 architectures. The ULE scheduler significantly
improves performance on multicore systems for many workloads.
   - Support for using DTrace inside the kernel has been imported
from OpenSolaris. DTrace is a comprehensive dynamic tracing
 framework.
   - A new and much-improved NFS Lock Manager (NLM) client.
   - Boot loader changes allow, among other things, booting from
USB devices and booting from GPT-labeled devices.
   - The cpuset(2) system call and cpuset(1) command have been added,
providing an API for thread to CPU binding and CPU resource
 grouping and assignment.
   - KDE updated to 3.5.10, GNOME updated to 2.22.3.
   - DVD-sized media for the amd64 and i386 architectures

For a complete list of new features and known problems, please see the
online release notes and errata list, available at:

   http://www.FreeBSD.org/releases/7.1R/relnotes.html
   http://www.FreeBSD.org/releases/7.1R/errata.html

For more information about FreeBSD release engineering activities,
please see:

   http://www.FreeBSD.org/releng/

 Availability
 -

FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE is now available for the amd64, i386, ia64, pc98,
powerpc, and sparc64 architectures.

FreeBSD 7.1 can be installed from bootable ISO images or over the network;
the required files can be downloaded via FTP or BitTorrent as described in
the sections below. While some of the smaller FTP mirrors may not carry all
architectures, they will all generally contain the more common ones, such as
i386 and amd64.

MD5 and SHA256 hashes for the release ISO images are included at the
bottom of this message.

The purpose of the ISO images provided as part of the release are as
follows:

dvd1: Contains everything necessary to install the base FreeBSD
operating system, a collection of pre-built packages, the
documentation, and supports booting into a livefs based
rescue mode. This should be all you need if you can burn
   and use DVD-sized media.

disc1, disc2, disc3, livefs, docs: disc1 contains the base FreeBSD
system and a few pre-built packages. disc2 and disc3 contain
more pre-built packages. Those three can be burned to CDROM
sized media and should be all you need to do a normal installation.
livefs contains support for entering into a livefs based
rescue mode but you need disc1 to do the initial boot first.
   docs contains the documentation.

bootonly: This supports booting a machine using the CDROM drive but
does not contain the support for installing FreeBSD from the
CD itself, you would need to perform a network based install
(e.g. from an FTP server) after booting from the CD.

FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE can also be purchased on CD-ROM or DVD from several
vendors. One of the vendors that will be offering FreeBSD 7.1-based
products is:

~ FreeBSD Mall, Inc.http://www.freebsdmall.com/

 BitTorrent
 --

7.1-RELEASE ISOs are available via BitTorrent. A collection of torrent
files to download the images is available at:

   http://torrents.freebsd.org:8080/

Wireless Modem Problems

2009-01-10 Thread Michael Harold
Hi the List,

The story is; I have a USB wireless modem (actually from Optus) that only
works on Windows XP Home.
In Ubuntu 8.10 (also installed) info from Help states that there is a means
of reading the *.inf file supplied with the modem that requires ndisgtk as an
add-on to ndiswrapper.
OK. That means that I need to note the required file; close Ubuntu;
re-start and open XP to get at the internet.
Did that.
Googled ndisgtk - downloaded and saved to a folder - so far so good.
In XP - copy the file - paste to memory stick. Check? - it's there. Close
XP.
Re-open to Ubuntu (memory stick recognised). Right click the ndisgtk file -
GDebi Package Installer tops the list - click on that and it opens - showing a
fault! (Quite a few sweet words - ya know? !)
Actually reads Package: ndisgtk. Status: Error: Dependancy is not
satisfiable: ndiswrapper-utils-1.9.

Can anyone put a finger on a problem with anything there? Or suggest
another means of getting the modem to work on Ubuntu?

Hopefully

Right now all content is static and is generated by some simple bash

 extracting them.

I will work at improving the rosetta import and I hope that for Jaunty
translation cycle, we can have more frequent updates for the rendered
XML and HTML files. In this way we can have a good feedback for the

Hi Adi,

Thank you very much for your work.

However for many language to generate HTML, there are following errors:
element xref: validity error : IDREF attribute linkend references an unknown
 ID ...
Ex. http://ubuntu-docs-stats.tla.ro/ubuntu-8.10/report_html/internet/ja.txt

I noticed that this message will be appeared when exec xsltproc
to each xml files, and will not be appeared when exec it to topic
index file by make all.

For example, if exec to each xml file by following command:
$ xsltproc --xinclude -o build/internet/ja/index.html \
  libs/ubuntu-html-chunk-cust.xsl internet/ja/connect.xml
It will output errors:
ERROR: xref linking to network-troubleshooting has no generated link text.
Error: no ID for constraint linkend: network-troubleshooting.
 Writing index.html for chapter(connect)

If exec to topic index file (connect.xml is in internet topic)
by Makefile's way in ubuntu-doc repository.
$ xsltproc --xinclude -o build/internet/ja/index.html \
  libs/ubuntu-html-chunk-cust.xsl internet/ja/internet.xml
It has no error. And can create all html files in internet topic.

If you use original make script, please check xsltproc's options.

FreePBX es recomendable.

Asterisk Now!

Uso o Ubuntu 8.10. yes yes yes

Recomendo instalar o Virtual Box

Mas o suporte a dispositivos USB é possível (vmware player), ele faz isto
pela libusb e deveria funcionar out-of-box

basta inserir o dispositivo, vai aparecer no menu devices do vmware player

programa meu no windows.

arquivohttp://www.vivaolinux.com.br/topico/Ubuntu-e-Kubuntu/configurando-a-rede-ubuntu-7#interfaces:
- sudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.xxx.xxx
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.xxx.1
broadcast 192.168.xxx.255

Após isso deve-se reiniciar o serviço:

- sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Compartilhada e
automaticamentehttp://www.vivaolinux.com.br/topico/Ubuntu-e-Kubuntu/configurando-a-rede-ubuntu-7#ele
vai pedir pra vc instalar o samba. escolhe e pronto.

Admilson, o que vc quer exatamente?
navegar na INternet, compartilhar arquivos, compartilhar recursos?
Se for compartilhar arquivos, você ira precisar do samba
instalado.(www.samba.org).
Caso tenha proxy, configure o proxy no browser (FIREFOX)
ajudar.

Para listar hardware existe o lshw, para listar o pci o lspci, para o
dmi o dmidecode.

ja para temperaturas existe o sensors.

vc instala ele configura e usa digita soente sensors que ele tras
temperaturas e algumas outras coisas.

CHROME9) proprietário no Ubuntu 8.10?

I'm loathe to use RythmBox as I could never get it to work with my iPod
Classic, but Amarok worked flawlessly.

I'll maybe remove Solitaire and put in a couple of Windows games with
the name of the game and something like 'works flawlessly in Ubuntu'

Translation could be a problem, since the app is Sony Vegas, so whoever
was translating would need to install Vegas. I can certainly make an
archive of the Vegas files and images used for anyone wanting to
translate it...

Congratulations Ronnie, I really like this video, and I agree with
Matthew's remarks (MSWord? / OOo Writer!, Rythmbox instead of Amarok,

I think Solitaire?/Solitaire! implies we can't play good games on

game (SecondLife or WoW for example)
I would also add something about security like Virus?(Antivirus alert

 and change WindowsXP? into Windows?.
please separate the text in the sources so that each country can easily

[Bug 315256] [NEW] Broken package apache2-prefork-dev in Intrepid x64

2009-01-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm trying to run the installer 'passenger-install-apache2-module' which itself
is installed by 'gem install passenger' a
Ruby on Rails module for apache (mod-rails).

It reports that Apache 2 and Apache 2 Development Headers are not
installed. Apache 2 (apache2-mpm-prefork) installs ok but the Apache 2
Development Headers (apache2-prefork-dev) fails to install suggesting
the package is broken. This is on an x64 Intrepid install. I have a very
similar setup on an x32 Intrepid install and it installs fine. Here is
the error I get:

sudo apt-get install apache2-prefork-dev
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.

[Bug 201736] Re: Hammering via ssh crashes Ubuntu Server

2009-01-10 Thread Aero9000
I built a new kernel (2.6.27.8) and on at least one occasion the server
dropped into initramfs. This occurred after the server had remained
switched off for quite some time (about 4 weeks). It had remained
powered, though. At that particular occurrence I was not been hammering
the server. In fact, I have not been able to have the server drop in
initramfs by hammering it via SSH.

To rule out any hardware related issues, I will re-set up the server
with Ubuntu 8.10. Since I am in no real rush to do that, would you have
any preference for me to upgrade the existing install or do a fresh
install?

Thanks.

[Bug 286828] Re: Access to samba 3.0.24-3.0.25 shares using CIFS is broken on 8.10

2009-01-10 Thread simonm
Symptom: When mounting remote CIFS shares from my Apple Time Capsule
(either by /etc/fstab or mount command) I would only see around 150 of
the 5000 directories in my Media folder.

Also, redirection from stdout to a file would work when the file was
created, but appending would not work.

so:
% pwd
/remote/mount/
% echo 1 2 3 test_file
% cat test_file
1 2 3
% echo 4 5 6 test_file
% cat test_file
1 2 3
cat: test_file: Input/output error

I updated to 2.6.27-11-generic (via Intrepid-proposed) and added the
nodfs option to my /etc/fstab entry.

Now, I see all directories as expected.

However, stdout redirection to a file still seems to be misbehaving...
% uname -a
Linux freya 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Thu Jan 8 08:38:33 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
% pwd
/remote/mount/
% echo 1 2 3 test_file
% cat test_file
1 2 3
% echo 4 5 6 test_file
% cat test_file
1 2 3
cat: test_file: Input/output error

Additional info:
% mount | egrep -e '(cifs|smb)'
//192.168.0.2/storage on /media/storage type cifs (rw,mand)

% grep cifs /etc/fstab
//192.168.0.2/storage  /media/storage cifs
credentials=/root/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0664,dir_mode=0775,uid=simonm,gid=audio,nodfs
 0 0

So, still having some issues with appending to files. Creating /
deleting seems fine.

[Bug 315190] Re: package samba-common 2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3.4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1p

2009-01-10 Thread mike stewart
I was applying a normal patch update.

the update was proceeding normally when the patch seemed to apply my
patched nvidia drivers during upgrade - my screen went black and then
seemed to hang. i hit the power switch after waiting some time, and a
shutdown broadcast message appeared (typical of a shutdown -now).

i haven't yet checked my logs (and not certain which one to check), but
this seemed to be more related to new nvidia driver patch and samba was
simply the next package in line in the update patch script.

[Bug 315896] Re: freeradius upgrade broken in hardy backports

2009-01-10 Thread Alan DeKok
Performing automated upgrades across major revision numbers of a program
isn't recommended.

There are a large number of changes in the configuration files and in
their processing from version 1.1.x to version 2.1.x. Writing scripts
to do automated upgrades is extremely difficult. The upgrade process
MUST be done by hand.

My suggestion is that the 2.1.x installer check the major version number
of the previously installed package. If they don't match, it should
refuse to do the upgrade.

Vraiment lent.

d'autres méthodes d'optimisation) par rapport au C++:
http://www.scipy.org/PerformancePython
ou
http://www.scipy.org/PerformancePython#head-a73fa06d3c4f3bda71b3526d30d51c492d8f80df

reconnue ça me met en mode

Bus 005 Device 004: ID 03f0:5c11 Hewlett-Packard Photosmart C4200

mount -t usbfs none /proc/bus/usb

   Alternate Number: 0
   Class: ff(vend.)
   Sub Class: 00

   Number of Endpoints: 0

http://www.aladdin.com/support/hasp/enduser.aspx#latestDD

Le nom du driver pour Ubuntu est:
HASP_SRM_LINUX_3.50_Run-time_Installer_script.tar.gz

Note qu'avec

[Bug 310295] Re: Totem cannot play second audio stream

Hi, thanks for replying.

The only way I can think of to _actually_ reproduce this issue, it is to
upload a sample file of the movie in question.

http://tinyurl.com/7lq2cc

To reproduce it:

Download the sample file and execute it and this bug should be
reproduced (at least on the latest Jaunty)

And just like I've told before.

This issue appeared with Jaunty Alpha 2.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for reading.

[Bug 311954] Re: suspend/hibernate stopped working after abrupt shutdown

2009-01-10 Thread mk
Here are futher observations:

Using a USB device interferes with suspend/hibernation. When something is
plugged in my USB ports, suspend/hibernation seems to always fail (everytime I
tried it so far with USB device plugged in). The I have to 'sudo
update-initramfs -u' again, reboot once, and then suspend/hibernation works
again.
After I just plugged in a USB device, and unplugged it right away, and tried
suspend, computer did not go in a complete sleep mode, but instead only after a
few seconds the computer immediately came back from suspend.

Even when I hibernate successfully, at the beginning of the hibernation
process, I see a fleeting error message (most of the time, maybe every
time?) about PCI...something failing to thaw. But otherwise everyhting
seems to work as expected.

The two executions of 'sudo update-initramfs -u' that I wrote about
before, were not meant for two different kernel version, but it was the
identical repetiotion of the same commad for the same kernel. I am not
sure whether one really needs to run it twice every time, but I was
suprise to see, that the size of initrd.img produced for the same kernel
by consecutive runs of 'sudo update-initramfs -u' always changes between
runs by a few bytes (up to a hundred bytes or so). Actually so far I did
it only three times consecutively at most ...

[Bug 315722] [NEW] Blank TTYS with Geforce Go 6200 and nvidia drivers.

2009-01-10 Thread Trel
Public bug reported:

I am running Kubuntu 8.10 on a Sony Vaio with a nvidia geforce go 6200.
Any time after loading the drivers that I try to use a TTY (or when shutting
down) there is a blank screen.

The TTY is still there, and responsive, but I cannot see it.

I had it with driver version 177 and figured I'd wait until 180 was out before
filing a bug report.
180 does not correct this and I had this same problem in 8.04 as well.

(I do not have this problem in fedora with a geforce FX 5700, so I don't
think it's nvidia drivers OR having an old nvidia card)
