[ubuntu-in] Fwd: How to install using apt-get from local .deb files without Internet OR how to bypass sudo apt-get update
I recently created a offline installer.. debbundle.. I got a bug in it.. Let me explain the process.. See code - http://code.google.com/p/debbundle/source/browse/trunk/OneClickInstall_Deb_Creator?spec=svn10r=10 To install vim-gtk, I am first downloading all deb package (and not installing it.) mkdir -p vim-gtk mkdir -p vim-gtk/partial sudo apt-get -y -o dir::cache::archives=./vim-gtk install --download-only vim-gtk sudo rm vim-gtk/lock Now I am copying this folder and another system which do not have Internet.. so on system 2, I am running following commands.. cd /media/usbdrive/vim-gtk sudo apt-get -y -o dir::cache::archives=/media/usbdrive/vim-gtk install vim-gtk This is not installing vim-gtk on second system which is just freshly installed. Initially when I created this project few days back, I was using same machine as build-server and install-test server. SO i was not getting this error// Source of Error : basically, a freshly installed system do not have -- sudo apt-get update If I run sudo apt-get update command then I command will work.. So basically, on a freshly installed system one has to apply sudo apt-get install update in order to install some package. How I can bypass this because my second machine do not have Internet. Let me know if anybody want any more clarity. PS: I am forwarding this to OSCOntrib mailing list so that people can create something similar for yum.. -- ┌─┐ │Narendra Sisodiya │http://narendrasisodiya.com └─┘ -- ┌─┐ │Narendra Sisodiya │http://narendrasisodiya.com └─┘ -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
[ubuntu-in] How to install Software package on a Linux System when it do not have Internet - debbundle
Problem - How to install Software package on a Linux System when it do not have Internet ? I know there are multiple solution to this problem.. Here I am giving one very solution which looks perfect to solve the problem you can down the script from http://code.google.com/p/debbundle/ What this little script will do.. For example, your system do not have vlc , then you can go to other system which has Internet and then run the script . Script will produce VLC.i386.OneClickInstall , You can can carry this file to anywhere and then install it by just clicking it. Let me repeat, Just by clicking it, neither you terminal , nor you need any extra software to install it. So enjoy it and give me feedback. Re: [ubuntu-in] Ubuntu and Archlinux Dual boot

I moved permanently to Ubuntu about 1.5 years ago. I like to keep my System upto date and hence that has involved upgrading the OS every 6 months. I would like to put an end to this 6 monthly upgrade madness by moving to a rolling release, i.e Arch initially dual booting with Ubuntu. I still do not know the 6 monthy rebase. See how centos works, you need not to reinstall every 6 month. Now pl help with these few Q's: 1. Is this a good Idea at all for a guy not very comfortable with command line (but can live with it if needed) inspite of a 5 year linux Exp? why not ! commandline is needed for special users. one can live without it also. My neighbor only use Firefox on his laptop and from last 8 month he has not complained anything on his ubuntu 9.04 desktop. 2. Though Arch is considered the best Rolling release, is it the best choice for a guy like me? Are there any beginner friendly oned out there? Chakra is still Alpha so not so comfortable. Frankly the Arch Documentation and Wiki are the most comprehensive and well thought out i have seen in the recent past. 3. If I can go ahead which should be installed first? Remember dual booting with WinXP, XP is always installed first. Ubuntu comes with GRUB2, Arch with GRUB Old. Naturally the Rolling release will stay, while the other OS might change. 4. All my Data with live in separate partitions not along with any OS. So Which FS type is better - EXT3 or EXT4. No WinXP, so no need of NTFS. In addition it is backed up to a USB Hard Disk. [ubuntu-in] Possible Idea for One Click Live Ubuntu inside Windows XP
I do not have much idea of Window exe files. But once I have used Fedora Live USB creator ( exe) for Windows. When I clicked that exe it brings a GUI for crating live usb. For using it, I need not to install it. In nutshell I have observed that in Windows we can run software as one exe which do not need installation. (It is also like ./a.out with all lib statically linked) Now think for a imaginary exe file which is a modification of Virtualbox or Qemu or any other such technology. Consider this exe has a live image of ubuntu inside it. As a result, when someone click on this exe file, this will bring a full screen window which will boot a live ubuntu with all softwares(in next 30 seconds). If we can make such one click Ubuntu.exe files (4GB will be good size), It will be possible to many windows users to make a instant trial. This will bring down the barrier of installing GNU/Linux. I think such projects will be a great use for conversion process and try. As I do not have much knowledge on Vbox and windows, I can just share the idea.
