[ubuntu-in] Fwd: How to install using apt-get from local .deb files without Internet OR how to bypass sudo apt-get update

2011-05-09 Thread Narendra Sisodiya
I recently created a offline installer.. debbundle..
I got a bug in it..
Let me explain the process..

See code -
http://code.google.com/p/debbundle/source/browse/trunk/OneClickInstall_Deb_Creator?spec=svn10r=10

To install vim-gtk, I am first downloading all deb package (and not
installing it.)

mkdir -p vim-gtk
mkdir -p vim-gtk/partial
sudo apt-get -y -o dir::cache::archives=./vim-gtk install --download-only
vim-gtk
sudo rm vim-gtk/lock

Now I am copying this folder and another system which do not have Internet..

so on system 2, I am running following commands..

cd /media/usbdrive/vim-gtk
sudo apt-get -y -o dir::cache::archives=/media/usbdrive/vim-gtk install
vim-gtk

This is not installing vim-gtk on second system which is just freshly
installed.

Initially when I created this project few days back, I was using same
machine as build-server and install-test server. SO i was not getting this
error//

Source of Error : basically, a freshly installed system do not have -- sudo
apt-get update
If I run sudo apt-get update command then I command will work..
So basically, on a freshly installed system one has to apply sudo apt-get
install update in order to install some package. How I can bypass this
because my second machine do not have Internet.

Let me know if anybody want any more clarity.

PS: I am forwarding this to OSCOntrib mailing list so that people can create
something similar for yum..

[ubuntu-in] How to install Software package on a Linux System when it do not have Internet - debbundle

2011-05-05 Thread Narendra Sisodiya
Problem - How to install Software package on a Linux System when it do not
have Internet ?

I know there are multiple solution to this problem.. Here I am giving one
very solution which looks perfect to solve the problem

you can down the script from http://code.google.com/p/debbundle/
What this little script will do..
For example, your system do not have vlc , then you can go to other system
which has Internet and then run the script .
Script will produce VLC.i386.OneClickInstall ,

You can can carry this file to anywhere and then install it by just clicking
it. Let me repeat, Just by clicking it, neither you terminal , nor you need
any extra software to install it.
So enjoy it and give me feedback. ( narendra AT narendrasisodiya DOT com )

I think, nm-applet is not a part of status menu in ubuntu after 10.04..
because I never see this icon in my one system .. it only appear when it is
connected..

--dry-run is the option.
Or you can use any of the following option to print
   -s, --simulate, --just-print, --dry-run, --recon, --no-act

So,
*sudo apt-get install --dry-run expect | sed -n '/The following NEW packages
will be installed/,/upgraded/p'*

Will print dependency of a package.
Also, apt-cache do not print the actual dependency. I mean
Actual dependency resolution. It just print what is written in package.

Ubuntu probably does the same thing behind the scenes, or
maybe it just adds the default user at install time to the

 # Members of the admin group may gain root privileges

Yes - If you are newbies
NO - as nothing is impossible. better use Distro which contains everything
you need.

also there is a button called Caps Lock in your keyboard, please turn off.

[ubuntu-in] Suggestion

2010-08-27 Thread Narendra Sisodiya
#1 .. if Network manager is not running, It should automatically start.
One of my friends has installed Linux on his system and it took me 30 minute
on phone to restart his network mangaer which got shutdowned automatically.
We must declare some mininum essential service which automatically restart.

#2 Reset Desktop.
Desktop configuration are stored in .gnome2 and other folder. It will be
great if someone create a right click scripts [not more then a day job]
which basically delete all new configuration and panel and reset of
original.
My friend has just installed ubuntu and he lost his top and bottom panels.
someone deleted. He is clue-less. It took me 25 minute to recreate his old
setting.

Subject: How to change/create the plymouth theme and other customization
To: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com

In Karmic,

A - When Ubuntu boot, we see gurb2 background screen.
B - After that we see Ubuntu logo
C - After that their is a splash screen
D - After that their is a Login Screen
E - After that again there again same splash screen for a while
F - After that I see wallpaper and Desktop.

I was able to customize everything in karmic. but in Lucid those command
lines script are not working.

In Lucid i am unable to customize part C, E.
Also how to disable logo, part B.

Basically i need to do it in making a custom Distro for school.

One more question, The beta version of my custom Live DVD is on Karmic. I am
great confusion that whether i should use Lucid or not.
These LiveDVDs will be mass-produced and distributed in India.
I am worry about the bugs in lucid. Karmic problems are known and easily
found on web. Lucid is very new.

Do share your experience. I am stuck at theming part. I have to include the
image provided by educational dept.

 Hi

I have been using Linux for the past 5 years, Opensuse initially, then
ubuntu, both dual boot with WinXP. I moved permanently to Ubuntu about 1.5
years ago. I like to keep my System upto date and hence that has involved
upgrading the OS every 6 months.

I would like to put an end to this 6 monthly upgrade madness by moving to a
rolling release, i.e Arch initially dual booting with Ubuntu.

I still do not know the 6 monthy rebase. See how centos works, you need not
to reinstall every 6 month.

Now pl help with these few Q's:
 1. Is this a good Idea at all for a guy not very comfortable with command
line (but can live with it if needed) inspite of a 5 year linux Exp?

why not ! commandline is needed for special users. one can live without it
also. My neighbor only use Firefox on his laptop and from last 8 month he
has not complained anything on his ubuntu 9.04 desktop.

 2. Though Arch is considered the best Rolling release, is it the best
choice for a guy like me? Are there any beginner friendly oned out there?
Chakra is still Alpha so not so comfortable. Frankly the Arch Documentation
and Wiki are the most comprehensive and well thought out i have seen in the
 recent past.
 3. If I can go ahead which should be installed first? Remember dual booting
with WinXP, XP is always installed first. Ubuntu comes with GRUB2, Arch with
GRUB Old. Naturally the Rolling release will stay, while the other OS might
 change.
 4. All my Data with live in separate partitions not along with any OS. So
Which FS type is better - EXT3 or EXT4. No WinXP, so no need of NTFS. In
addition it is backed up to a USB Hard Disk.

These items will be sold at a no-profit cost to interested members

http://www.myntra.com/red-pill-linux/T-Shirt/FC/PD/1254652371 , But,
better can build the tshirt using local vendor, who is ready to design
a good Tshirt and ready to send via courier too.

 Hi

Am wondering if people in the Delhi and the neighborhood would like to
meet up on the 6th , Sunday, afternoon.

We could figure out a place.

 Agenda could be
 1. To discuss promoting ubuntu - how to and what needs to be done
 2. Meet up and have fun - nothing like knowing other folks
 3. Discuss any projects that we think we can collaborate on - (for me
 its the calendar)
 4. Any other agenda that people may want to add.

Note: I am not a delhi person but as it happens i will be there from
 then for a few days.

[ubuntu-in] Possible Idea for One Click Live Ubuntu inside Windows XP

2009-11-02 Thread narendra sisodiya
I do not have much idea of Window exe files.
But once I have used Fedora Live USB creator ( exe) for Windows. When
I clicked that exe it brings a GUI for crating live usb. For using it,
I need not to install it.

In nutshell I have observed that in Windows we can run software as one
exe which do not need installation. (It is also like ./a.out with all
lib statically linked)

Now think for a imaginary exe file which is a modification of
Virtualbox or Qemu or any other such technology. Consider this exe has
a live image of ubuntu inside it. As a result, when someone click on
this exe file, this will bring a full screen window which will boot a
live ubuntu with all softwares(in next 30 seconds).

If we can make such one click Ubuntu.exe files (4GB will be good
size), It will be possible to many windows users to make a instant
trial. This will bring down the barrier of installing GNU/Linux.

I think such projects will be a great use for conversion process and
try. As I do not have much knowledge on Vbox and windows, I can just
share the idea.

if they don't want to change their policy then they should sell Tshirst
according to Indian currency. I think one Tshirt should not be more then
Rs.300-500. Otherwise I don't think anyone will purchase those Tshirts.
Infact 2 years back I also tried to get one but the rate was too high and I
thought I could get 2 Tshirts in this cost. What do you think guys??

After buying XP, M$ must be providing any support feature. You must
ask to M$ regarding this because they know better then us on close
source technology.
