it would be nice to have a tool/info o integrate.

I think that we can ship at leats the intel ones, as they are very common.

I sometimes check the website to see if there are news and found no

 well, yes..

It was because the prepare script was processing *.reg

maybe this line could work better:

which means that you need to run:

Hello Olaf,

I configured and use it fine and as far as I remember it was
configured quite easyly. as a guidance, read this:

http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/478

after you have configured the tftp server, you have the a working
config (any kind of tftpboot is good, dont have to be unattended; but
it has documentation and sample config, too, I think).

one section for pxeboot config looks like this for me:

LABEL Unattended
  MENU LABEL Unattended Deployment
  kernel bzImage
  append initrd=initrd z_path=//hostnameorip/share z_user=username z_pass=pwd

I hope the append line was not broke into half :)

the mentioned bzImage and initrd can be found in the unattended
packages (cant remember the filename, download everithing and you
will find it)

give it a try and hope :)

Re: [Unattended] Some Questions

2010-03-09 Thread FwdTmp
Hello,

First of all, sorry for the post without added anything :) i
misclicked a bit :D

 1. I created an *.iso-Image using the unattended CD Creator (
 http://www.vitaligraf.de/en/?Projects:Windows_Unattended_CD_Creator ).
Is it possible to use this iso (mount -o loop ...) instead of an
original WinXP-CD. So that I can skip the prompts at the beginning of
 unattended ?
if you want to skip the prompts at the beginning, you can, but it is
not the best way to start with a prepared installation media. for
example, in my case i tried it the same way (and that preparation was
almost nothing! and i mean almost nothing really), but after the
installation i bumped into may other problems (and it was not the
problems of the unattended project, it is the problems of the win
install procedure; e.g. i could install softwares, which tried to get
the locale of the setup!) dont try to mix things. and if you want to
skip questions, try to use site/unattended.csv. it is a better way!

 2. If I use unattended the normal way and enter the answers to the
questions at the beginning of the install process. and then i will
install an second client, do i have to make these inputs again, or will
there be still saved and the second and all later installation will be
 complete unattended?
as far as i know, your inputs cannot be saved in the way, you say.
but, you can build a database of answers in the previously mentioned
way. that is more powerful.

 3. Reading the step-by-step guide i can't find anything about pxe
booting, only that it is possible. Is there ar more detailed descriptions.
well, for today i cannot tell you the steps, but believe me, it works
as it is written on the page. i created my first unattended win setup
with pxe. and it was written on the webpage of the project. keep try
to find. or, if you totally fail to find, ask again. if i am not this
tired, i will try to find it for you. it is there :)

of them and manually patch the others (even with autopatch routines).
one and complete method is fine for me. my install pool is a separated

has many, you know :)

I'm having trouble with finding what to install and how... The one big
pack of updates I tried failed miserably (one slipstreaming method
gave heaps of missing files, another resulted in the product key not
 being accepted).

Just tried a selection of critical updates obtained using autopatcher,
and it seems to miss just one file (ieframe.dll.mui) but comes up with
an error in the GUI section along the lines of failing to write
something (at which point it reboots and I can't read it).

Re: [Unattended] Unable to do post install scripts

2010-02-19 Thread FwdTmp
Hello Sijis,

as far as understand your description windows is installed properly
but it sees no network to download packages and there is a installed
hw and need to reboot message with an option OK. i think your hd or
something is what it says installed and to use need to reboot, and not
the network card! _if_ the nic has the correct driver, _and_ it gots
proper ip configuration, others go fine.

try to check if the driver you selected to copy is there, and (with
manual installation) check if it is working properly. i am quite sure,
you dont have the correct driver.

I have a working installation of unattended. I'm able to install
WinXPSP2 without any issues and not including the $oem$\$1 path in
 the i386 directory. I added a couple specific drivers for a D740
(network and video) and everything works with the exception of the
'post software install piece'. When it goes that post screen, which
i assume is going to install the software i selected, its not going
out to the network and getting the software data. The DOS window
mentions that 'network unavailable' and i have a Windows box saying
hardware detected, need to reboot. I'm assuming this is detecting
my network card and obviously, that's why it can get to the network.
I'm able to select the drivers from the populated list, so its
being recognized. After the reboot, it skips the 'post install' part
and goes right into Windows and at the NIC drivers are loaded.

Is there some way to fix this? Maybe there's a way to 'preload' the
NIC driver, so that the post install would work?

 Thanks again for any suggestion.

 Sijis

all the languages and some patches ask for a certification of genuine
 windows system.
arent they ask only for downloading? maybe an alternate method can
help those, who have a collection of patches (wsus, or personaly
patches; your url collection method can help to keep track site
specific patch list. somehow.)

 - Add a new optional parameter in unattended.txt's [_meta] section to
 disable the drivers scan script.
If you do not want to detect drivers do not put any under
 unattended/install/drivers
I dont know why should anyone install without drivers but an on/off
switch can help, that is a good suggestion. if you need driverless
installation (why anyway? :) i cant guess, maybe the one who asked can
enlight us)

 - Why are there no files winxpsp3-up0809.bat, winxpsp3-up0902.bat,
winxpsp3-up0905.bat? Were there really no updates in those months?
Sometimes updates got replaced by a new version.
how can it be kept track? I mean how can you decide which patch can
be skipped because it is overwritten by something else, later?

 - Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)
well... I am not sure if this can be installed unattended...
most of the time it needs user interaction. even with wsus. nonsense.

¿?¿?¿?¿?¿? is this a core funcionality?
:D i dont even know of anyone who think it is useful for any purpose

 Hi!

Your posts luck of any clues. Give us some log, where is the process stuck.
The boot process is well written at syslinux wiki. Unattended starts after
booting the memdisk (for tftpboot) and starts the master bash script,
which is also well readable ...
Testing the RIP Linux PXE boot suggest that you have some problems around
mounting cifs //ntinstall/install - may be not.

 hello

really sorry to say this, but for me the only thing was to obtain the
driver for the windows machine since the linux the unattended (4.8)
used to boot and prepare the installation was able to initiate
network. no i tried to reach that person for whom i installed his
eepc (sorry, i dont really like them), but he cannot be able to
come and bring his computer for me to investigate. the only reason for
your problem can be a slight difference in the network adapter. as far
as i remember they were the same model, but manufacturer can have two
or more option for network cards. especially on different locations of
distribution. so... who knows. maybe it is an ugly thing for only one
computer, but try to install or run a live linux onto that machine and
experiment with the network modules to see the difference. maybe you
can have an init option as workaround. keep trying!

Hello Gregory,

thanks your help Greg, anyway! I will try to find resources to this
project :) it doesnt seems to be impossible, because when I set the
computer name domain/workgroup, it can be a place to identify the
pool. this was my first question to myself when I got a hand on this
procejt. it yould be very usefull and I dont think it is only me, who
tried this. think of an oem dealer like person, who has to install
many machines with different os versions. here, we only use 2, or at
most 3. so it is not a problem which cannot be avoided, but it is a
good thing to think on :)

anyone else? maybe someone ever tried this somehow (i am not a coder
too, so it takes a lot of time to rebuild the script which identifies
the csv)

know if or how (1) would work, since it's so long since I've heavily
 modified my csv file.

I don't know how you would identify a machine as belonging to a certain
pool, then identify that pool's product key. Perhaps it's possible, but
beyond my knowledge and use of Unattended - sorry!

In a pinch, you could write your own backing to it. You could find the
perl(?) script files which refer to the csv file then modify them to
suit your purposes. I'm no master coder so I'm afraid I won't be much
 help there either.

 Cheers,
 Greg.

Hello tovis,

I think that extract the full BTS driver pack, is not such a good idea.
Extracted BTS driver pack need more then 1,5G - 7zip need less then 700M -
you try to preserv space on the install box and waste time and space
during the copy of the install files. why? 1,5G is not that much. if
it is a dedicated machine for such purpose, you should have at least
10G :D of disk for it. don't you? :)

i hated even copying 3mega of unused drivers, not 700mega! if the new
automatic method is working fine (soon I will have a bit more time and
I will test it somehow), why keep the disk usage so low by zipped pack
and keep it very high as you install machines??

2010-01-16 Thread FwdTmp
Hello tovis,

that 4G you mean, which is the first part of the installation (fat32,
the partition to be resized and converted to ntfs)? if so, then it
cannot be solved, just some other way. I mean that this 4G is a file
system limitation of the installer (do I remember well...? someone
will correct if not :D). So, when you use the drivers, you have to
copy less, that that! this is why I rewrote the installer script
(well, actually the one that copies the system files before the
installation procedure; now, with the version 4.8 it only copies the
drivers needed. not all of them). I haven't tested the new version
(4.9) and its driver autodetect, but if it works _after_ the windows
installation... well, it is not good, because it then copies _all the
drivers_, and it is not necessary. does it? I hope not :) and the
lspci was mentioned as a tool for detection of the drivers, so I hope
the detection means it does not copies all the drivers and use some of
them later... does it? :)

 Hi!

I'm trying to fire up new 4.9 release, on a Debian Lenny (PXE boot is
working with RIP, Hiren's boot CD and Debian installer - what mean that
tftp server and DHCP, also samba is configured well).
 Problems:

 1. My target is box with two NIC - of course unattended trying to work on
wrong NIC (one is a 100 Mbit onboard - BIOS can use one - and one
1000 Gbit Realtek add-on card for future production).
 - For now I can resolv, swap cable.

 2. As usually, without DNS server it could not resolve address
//ntinstall/install.
 - For now I have put in by hand using known ip address.

For now I'm using default configurations exclude unattended.txt and
 keys.bat
Everything other goes smoothly, include installation of the BTS driver
 pack.

One more quick question. Where I can customize installation profiles (I
 mean base, develop, ...)?

 Hi,
I guess that this is a different issue. You can have a problem with sata
support. So the error is that unattended is not able to mount a disk.

But this is a local disk not a network share. Did I get it right?

file...When I try to boot it up (I've tried using vmware, VirtualBox OSE,
and real computer booting...consequently does it matter if I'm using a
virtual machine?) it goes through everything just fine until it gets to
the install share, then it gives me this error:
 Trying mount.cifs \\carson\install /z -o username=guest,ro,nocase
mount error: could not find target server. TCP name carson/install not
found. No ip address specified and hostname not found.
 *** mount.cifs failed
*** Failed to mount /z. Retrying...
Then it asks if I want to override the defaults again. I've tried
switching my slashes around, using an authorized username and password
(instead of guest) to no avail.

I do need to point out one thing that may be an issue, so I'd like your
feedback on it. My install folder is on another harddrive on the server
(in the /disk2/ folder), but I read somewhere (I'll see if I can find the
link to the site if necessary) that shares cannot be mounted outside of
the root directory...so I set up a /install/ folder (which is where all my
path variables point to) which contains symlinks to all the folders in the
 /disk2/install directory...would this make a difference?

Using the console, I am able to ping the server by typing carson, but I
am unable to use the mount command to mount the shared folder...but then
again I may just be phrasing my mount command incorrectly.

I am not aware of a DHCP server on our system, and I was instructed that a
netbios aliases in the smb.conf file would suffice. Hopefully you all can
help me out here, because I'm at a loss and the boss would like to see
some results. Thank you for all your help in advance, if you need any more
information please let me know and I'll be happy to send it out.

 Scott

try to use an _untouched_ install media for source, just for a test!
if it still fails, maybe it is a problem of the server side (can be
network traffic problem, but not 100%). first you have to create a
_clean_ file storage dir for a test-os.

i saw this kind of problem, and finally the solution was to go back to
a clean install media. something, somehow had gone wrong. a test is
cheap :)

test the name resolving. when unattended boots up, it must reach the
host on which the share is. i dont use ntinstall as hostname, i used
the ip instead and i have no problem with resolvings. it is not that
you have to be able to reach ntinstall from the pc which you want to
install! the operating system which you boot up has to reach (anyway
you hadnt had mentioned that the problem is when you use the boot cd).

the boot disk uses default hostname, with default everything. BUT you
can override the defaults! do it and try that way!

Re: [Unattended] step by step guide

2009-12-09 Thread FwdTmp
hello

well, I think you have to do and learn before you install a server.
know how it works, where to get logs, etc. the lack of these are the
source of your problem (sorry to say so). last time you asked about
the followings:

 Copy system (/z/os/winxp/i386/ /c/$win_nt$. ~ls/)
Does the copy takes lot of time?
you have to measure it yourself :) if X is a lot for you, then it
takes a lot ;)

and is there a way to look at the
progress of it on the unattended server ?
of course, there is a way. check for the samba status. it will tell
you what files are open and when. but, beware. you have to guess the
order of files and you have to know them by heart. it is not the best
way, but close to the only way (you can modify the script to anounce
which files are being copied, but it would make it much slower and it
is nonsense to see which are copied or how many of them are to go.)

be patient :) it is the best way. use the time to read documentation
;) you have many servers included, read the manuals of them during
file copy...

the number of the open files must be the same (or around it) during

[Unattended] productkey

2009-08-27 Thread FwdTmp
Hello,

I would like to check if during the start the organization is set to a
specific value then let the ProductKey value be set to the apropriate
value, matching the organization. I am planning to do it with
/site/config.pl, so I put in these lines:

$u-{'UserData'}-{'ProductKey'} =
 sub {
 my $media_obj = Unattend::WinMedia-new ($u-{'_meta'}-{'OS_media'});
 my $os_name = $media_obj-name ();
 if (($os_name =~ /Windows XP/)  ($u-{'UserData'}-{'OrgName'}=~
 /myorganization/)){
 return 'my product key';
 }
 return undef;
 };

I works in a way. I sets the ProcuctKey if the organization is
matching, but if not, it make it undef, as it seemed. But this way I
would miss the goal, since because this part in the config.pl, there
is no question for the productkey at all. This is not the best :)

Is there a good way to reach my goal? As I can figure out (just
learning perl... sorry), if I change the order of the questions in the
install.pl file (first the org and some times later the ProductKey),
maybe it would work. If I do so, I would lose this modification after
an update of the install.pl (dosbin). There must be a solution, but
now I dont know. Can anyone help me out?

[Unattended] unused additional OEM drivers

2009-08-19 Thread FwdTmp
hello everyone,

Is there any way to get rid easyly the unused driver? I mean my
$OEM$\$1 dir slowly gets more and more fat as I put drivers into
them (and the textmode drivers will be so, too). At first, it is not a
big problem, but soon the driver directory can be so fat... it can
reach even gigabytes of driver files. And now the install script
copies _all_ of the driver files to the future system disk, even the
unused ones, so the file copy part of the unattended setup can be
longer and longer (os files are close to 600mb, drivers can go bigger
soon). I can figure out a way to get rid of the files after the
installation but it looks a bit awkward to see so many unused dirs on
the system disk after the installation. But time is money, so it would
be better _not to copy_ them in vain (and the needed drivers are know
before the copy process, so...).

Any suggestion would be welcome! TIA

Re: [Unattended] unused additional OEM drivers

2009-08-19 Thread FwdTmp
Hello,

I think I am not the only one who has lot of drivers :) so this
problem maybe not a lone one... at least I hope so.

Now I hope to find a way to work around. Namely in nt5x-install script
there is a part which do the file copy-s, maybe this can be a part of
my suggestion. I am thinking about the following:

- in /os folder I created a folder /os/drv in which I put all my
driver folders
- in an osdir (e.g. test) I create a symbolic link in the
/os/test/$OEM$/ folder to the previously mentioned driver folders,
like /os/test/$OEM$/$1/
- when the Copy system section of the nt5x-install comes, somehow
the system files have to be copied _without_ the symbolic linked
driver folder.

This way the full driver folder wont go to the soon-to-be c:. BUT,
and here is where I need a bit more study, I need to parse in a way
the unattend.ini (looks like parse_ini_file will help a lot). Maybe I
can use the variable OemPnPDriversPath as a starting point to copy
only the needed drivers to the soon-to-be c:. (because this variable
holds only the selected driver folder names, which is my goal).

Does it make any sense to you? If it works, it maybe also can be done with
textmode drivers (which are a lot more less, fortunately)

I would be interested to know what other unattended users do this-

 First thoughts come to mind

clear out old drivers you no longer need (what a pain!)

there is a procedure on the wiki on how to use the driver pack. I've
found the driver pack had no drivers for my new computers... but it
7zips them to cut down on the size. Maybe using the same type of thing
to cut down on the size. 7ziping the drivers and then having the gui
mode windows installer unzip them... I think there is still an upper
limit that 7ziping will not get around. But it would still be faster to
 copy from the network...

[Unattended] path and env variables after appsonly

2009-08-18 Thread FwdTmp
Hello Everyone!

I have to install an app, which during the installation needs
manipulation of the path. I did it with setenv.pl and found that it
puts not necessary things to path (i.e. that path used during the
appsonly, like z:\;z:\bin\ and the like). During the investigation of
this I noticed that this script adds other environment variables, not
needed by me.

After an unattended installation I did not notice these (tested it
now) but only after the appsonly. So I have to figure out a way to
hide these things (setenv.pl pathtmp %PATH%... todo.pl
setenv.pl PATH pathtmp... setenv.pl z and so on).

You may think this cover is not needed, but windows sometimes
stupid more than accepted by me. For example, not existing directories
in the path can render some apps a constant-or-longer-than-needed
waiting state. And of course, I didnt want to reveal the useres that
the z_path, z_user, and the like. Maybe paranoia, but it is necessary.

What is you opinion of this problem? Can it be hidden in other ways
than I described? Maybe and upgrade to the script for appsonly
installs?

Re: [Unattended] path and env variables after appsonly

2009-08-18 Thread FwdTmp
Hello!

Thanks for the fast answer and for your time to make a change in the
script, I am looking forward for the svn change to apply it at my site
:)

Anyway, I realised that the problem with the path is because the
setenv.pl script I used to change the path look the sys and the user
path variable as a whole (probably) and when it sets, the not
permanent changes go permanent :) Till I got no better solution, as a
workaround I will use resource kit's pathman (it would be great to
find a way around, because it is limited usage to the resource kit's
domain... anytime it can be changed)

keep up this great work anyway! :) thanks for it!

 Hello,

 I'm the author of appsonly.bat / appsonly.pl. You're right, appsonly.bat
permanently sets the environment variables Z, Z_PATH, Z_USER to the
machine and so will leave traces on the machine. I'll look at the
scripts and try to fix this, result will be posted here and added to the
 SVN.

Concerning the PATH variable, I do not think that appsonly will
 permanently change it.

 ---snip---
 set path=%path%;%scriptdir%\bin
 setenv -m Z_USER %username%
 setenv -m Z_PATH %scriptdir%
 set Z_PATH=%scriptdir%
 setenv -m Z %Z%
 ---snip---

set -- only affects current session, change will be gone after next reboot
setenv -m -- permanent change

 Regards
 Gerhard

Re: [Unattended] Advice for use of mailing list

2009-07-30 Thread FwdTmp
hello guys,

I am that hungarian guy :) and still in detecting the solution of the
wrong locale (can you tell me how did you switch it back without
reinstallation?).

as far as my test are seems to lead, it is a problem with the nlite
prepared disk. some option makes it wrong. with the normal setup disk
it works fine. I am still testing what made this failure. if i find
something out, I will post for future users sake. maybe it helps.

This is pity as I also experienced the issue of regional settings failure,
wrong locale when performing an install with v. 4.8
I wanted to install in german - the result was english.
Luckyly I was able to switch this after installation contrary to the
 hungarian guy.

are you using nlite cd or a unmodified copy of windows xp?

Re: [Unattended] regional settings failure, wrong locale

Hello,

I tried two setup discs. one was nlite-ed (to integrate sp3), and the
other was our normal corporate setup disc. I cannot check if it is
slipstreaded and it is because i dont ever know nothing about
slipstreaming. Is it detectable somehow?

I have found posts on mail archives of Unattended, but unfortunately I
found no answers... As a last and ultimate escape I would try to have
it set up totally attended. Can you suggest a possible way for it?
(prefered ending is an unatteded of course :) but in panic it can
get a workaround to have a netinstall for windows clients)

well, personally I doubt it, but other users have reported problems with
 the Hungarian version.
as you using the original CD contents or a slipstream version?

[Unattended] regional settings failure, wrong locale

2009-07-28 Thread fwdtmp
Hello

I have a problem with the unattended deployment's locale/language
settings. I have a winxpsp3 cd (Hungarian version) and after the
installation (which runs smoothly anyway) I noticed that the
locale/input/etc language is enlish and I cannot even select Hungarian
to add.

It says (i switched off the unattended mode totaly to see what
happens) on the regional settings page of the setup dialogues that is
it Hungarian, but when I wanted to learn the deatails empty scroll
down list welcomed me to say I only have Engligh settings.

I went through the setup in many ways but nothing changed! In a doc it
says that the [RegionalSettings] section in unattend.txt needs to have
i386/lang folder copied to target system before the installation
begins so I have checked it and saw it copied that, too. But after the
istallation in c:\windows\system32 there was no lang folder. I looks
as if it disappeared during the installation (other desktops used the
same cd to setup have lang folder, but they are not unattended
installations!)

I spent days to find solution on wiki-s, ms knowledge bases and so on,
but nothing was found. I hope you can help me in a way, because with
this failure I cannot do anything I planned so happily when I found
you project :)

yours sincerely
Lev
