[UC] UCD press release in DP today
http://media.www.dailypennsylvanian.com/media/storage/paper882/news/2008/09/22/News/Residents.Weigh.In.On.Baltimore.Ave.Makeover-3443440.shtml 'After five years of support from the Main Street program, McNulty said, the hope is that it will feel like more of a cohesive experience as you go up Baltimore, rather than little pockets of businesses. It'll feel like it's thriving all the way up the street.' Ms. Harte, tossed a few extra comments in this press release for UCD. It gives more of an appearance of balanced reporting to toss in random statements. Hahaha, she certainly doesn't need to look far to find massive distrust of Penn/UCD projects! In 2003, UCD denied using LI to pressure Baltimore Ave businesses into facade upgrades when it was reported in the city Paper. Then, in the Philadelphia business Journal, the corridor manager seemed to take pride about this inappropriate use of a government agency. During the mayoral primary, it was revealed that UCD was violating federal law while doing favors Now, UCD will pay itself $50,000, and pass out $25,000 favors per year to supporters. Ostensibly, UCD wants to homogonize Baltimore Ave into something like the Cereality corridor of Walnut st where upscale businesses come and go. UCD passes out massive favors to upscale businesses like Sugar Hill Bakery. These businesses are targeted as supporters for the BID, Penn's scheme to gain taxation rights to further gentrification without any accountability. Any business that doesn't play along is going down hard as we've seen repeatedly. Penn's unilateral vision about beautification is absurd, (eg. The Hub, Radian, the 40th and Locust artwork, Walnut St). Who the hell told UCD that we want to destroy the long term businesses on Baltimore Ave to get a rotating group of upscale Cereality, Sugar Hill Bakery, etc. facades? Is this the work of that damned SHCA/UCHS? Glenn You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. The most shocking thing about the article is that UCD is keeping 2/3 of the grant for administration and only doling out 1/3 for actual improvements! This money is from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Even the full $75,000 wouldn't go very far for that kind of thing. What nerve! [UC] Easy Poll by PBS : Is Palin is qualified to be VP
In light of Karen Allen's thoughtful forwarding of provocative posts which illuminate the question of how race and party seem to be affecting perception and choice, I've decided to pass this along. PBS is doing a poll which asks if Palin is qualified to be VP. No registration is required. Vote at: http://www.pbs.org/now/polls/poll-435.html It only takes seconds. Yes is at the moment winning. This reminds me how lucky I feel to live within a community of thinkers and doers, and also how different our experience is from that of folks in less diverse communities. This weekend Larry and I were visiting a friend, near Lancaster, and she said she was afraid to post an Obama sign on her front lawn and cheered to see footage of the Alaskan Rally for Obama. She especially liked a sign Hockey Mama for Obama that used humor to make the divide seem cross-able. Feel free to send this on. All the best! Liz Campion Buried in medical files? Yes, you noticed this attention to the single issue, parking. I previously posted a prediction that a superficial discussion of the traffic study would precede PCPC approval at the 2nd hearing. I wanted a public record to demonstrate how obvious the pattern between the false record keeping, propaganda and the subsequent hearings becomes to a witness. All of the comprehensive testimony and discussions about the various issues were completely edited out of the official public record. Here is the link to a two hour hearing, May 20, reduced to four pages on the PCPC website (pages 4-8). Please note how these minutes appear like transcripts and the need to review this traffic study is highlighted. Anyone witnessing the two earlier PHC hearings and the public record of same, would have expected the superficial discussion of the traffic study the moment they read these PCPC records! The backroom dealing is not hard to recognize, in person, even though it is impossible to see from the public record. They've got a tight little system between city hall, the DP, and the Franklin building. http://www.philaplanning.org/pubinfo/minutes/5-20-08%20mins.pdf -Original Message- From: UNIVERSITY*CITOYEN [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sep 22, 2008 1:00 PM To: University City List UnivCity@list.purple.com Subject: Re: [UC] Did anyone see this from the DP? The most shocking thing about the article is that UCD is keeping 2/3 of the grant for administration and only doling out 1/3 for actual improvements! That's because UCD is Penn, in form and substance. When I came to Penn, I wanted to pursue grant money. Unless things have changed, this is Penn's formula. I think it was a 60% to 40% split but that was in th nineties. Any policy these UCD clowns have, is handed down directly from Penn. I doubt service organizations would ever get that type of administrative cut. Self promotion, consultant fees, Penn lawyers, all need funds while LI hit lists require staff time. [UC-Announce] Friday, 9/26: JAYME STONE MANSA SISSOKO: American Banjo reunited with its African roots
Crossroads Music presents: JAYME STONE AND MANSA SISSOKO American banjo reunited with its African roots Friday, September 26 at 7:30 pm 48th St. and Baltimore Ave. in West Philadelphia (in Calvary Church) http://www.crossroadsconcerts.org Canadian banjo virtuoso JAYME STONE learned his craft both from fellow banjo players Béla Fleck, Tony Trischka and Bill Evans and jazz musicians like Dave Douglass and Bill Frisell. He began his professional career playing roots-inflected jazz with the band Tricycle, but his first solo album, 2007’s Juno (Canadian Grammy) winning The Utmost, demonstrated that he is equally adept at jazz- inflected roots. While he had long wondered what aspects of the banjo didn’t make it across the ocean with the enslaved Africans who brought it to North America in the 1700-1800’s, Jayme began studying African music seriously after meeting Mansa Sissoko during a 2004 tour of Canada. With little common language between us, we turned to music for communication, he says of their first meeting. This tangible heart-to-heart connection was there immediately and I knew that he was the perfect collaborator for the project. In preparation for recording the album Africa to Appalachia, Jayme spent seven weeks in Mali, where he studied with the likes of Djelimady Sissoko, Adama Tounkara, Basseskou Kouyate, and Toumani Diabate. MANSA SISSOKO is both a griot from a family that preserves community history, stories, and music in the oral tradition and one of a new generation of singer-songwriters from Mali, West Africa who weaves his music around the sound of traditional instruments and lyrics which encourage people in their day-to-day life. A master of the kora, a 21- stringed harp, he grew up in the town of Kita, which has long been famous for its musicians. His mother sang for ceremonies like marriages and baptisms and especially for other women, while his father was a speaking griot, who reminded people of their family histories, their roles and responsibilities in society. For the past fifteen years, Mansa has been performing across Mali in both rural villages and major centers like Tombuktou, Segou, and Bamako. He has performed on national television, for ambassadors from around the world, and always for friends who visit at his house. For five years he played with the great Habib Koite and he has also recorded and performed with Tiken Jah Fakoly, one of West Africa's most popular new artists. He has toured Senegal, Burkina Faso, France, and Canada, organized and performed in Mali's national kora festival, and is the subject of an upcoming documentary film. Guitarist GRANT GORDY has performed with the likes of Chris Thile, Ben Krakauer and Matt Flinner and was chosen to play the prestigious Young Artists Concert at Carnegie Hall alongside Edgar Meyer and Mike Marshall. He currently plays in the Jayme Stone Quartet and most recently, the David Grisman Quintet. Drummer HARRIS EISENSTADT has collaborated with Bobby Bradford, Les Claypool, Yusef Lateef, Butch Morris, Sam Rivers, and Wadada Leo Smith, among many others. He has performed throughout the US and Canada, Australia, in Japan and West Africa, released six albums as a leader and appeared on 35 other recordings. His most recent recording, The All Seeing Eye + Octets was nominated for Best Tribute Album of 2007 in All About Jazz NY and appeared on Top Ten of 2007 lists in the Village Voice, Wire, Signal to Noise, and All About Jazz. SOUND SAMPLES AND MORE INFORMATION http://www.crossroadsconcerts.org TICKET PRICING Standard price: $15 Special Supporters: $20 Discount price: $10 (for students, seniors, or if you can’t afford to come otherwise) Children under 12: $5 Crossroads events are priced on a sliding scale.
