2010-05-22 Thread Bob Sneidar

Hi Ruslan.

2 things weigh against your assessment. First, one of the databases is
remote and it happens to be the one I am querying 1 record at a time.
The second thing is that to my knowledge you cannot create joins
between 2 tables in different databases. The source database is a
local file based SQLite database to further complicate matters.

I want to employ a method that could work with databases of 1000
records or 1,000,000 records. To do that means I cannot risk memory
overflow in runrev by huge query results. For this particular
application I would never hit that limit, but what if I want to take
the functionality of my data import module and make it available by
itself?it needs to work in all situations or not at all. That's how I
think.

My goal here is to import/merge data from a Spiceworks database of
devices, software and other things. But in the future it could be
anything. I am learning the limitations of querying remote SQL
servers. For this application I think a local SQL server would be much
better, but for the dev phase where I am out and about with my laptop
on-rev will suffice.

UPDATE:

Well I discovered what my problem was. I commented out the method I employed
which used sqlYoga for all the queries, and wrote a new method using only RevDB
API calls. The sqlYoga method took about 1 to 1.5 seconds per iteration, so for
100 single record queries, let's say roughly 2 minutes. The RevDB method took
less than 10 seconds for 100 queries.

I guess what I am saying is that if you need to do lots of small queries like I
am doing, and you don't mind learning a little SQL, the RevDB commands and
functions are going to be a TON more efficient. But if you are doing a few
queries here and there, the performance hit would be minimal, and sqlYoga can
save you enormous amounts of trouble learning SQL and get you going much
quicker.

Thanks. The right and left arrow keys should do two things in my script. If
they are pressed together with the shift Key, they navigate to the first card
of the next and previous bg, respectively. Without the shift key they should do
what you just described. But I just made it work by commenting out my whole
stack script except for the arrowKey handler. Now at least I know where the
problem is and hope to find out. Thans again.

Andre, I opened the stack with Media, but no luck. However, I

Haroldo,

I had tried only the short one. I just tried your long script on the
same stack (I just added " if whichKey is "up" then go to card 1" as a
first line, for fun ;-)) but might be useful anyway!

I assume that your are expecting one is "circling" in the same
background when, being on the first card of a bg, one presses the left
arrowkey (or the right arrowkey when being on the last card of the
bg). If this is the case, then no problem; your script works well in a
stack created in rev.

Hi Haroldo, how nice to see you here!

(example from Rev dictionary)
on arrowKey theKey -- make Up arrow go to the first card
if theKey is "up" then go to card 1
  else pass arrowKey
end arrowKey

Instead of going to card 1 it kept going to the next card each
>time I pressed the up arrow key, and after the last card the stack

This is the default behavior for arrowkeys. If you have navigationarrows
set to true (which you said you do) then the up and down arrows
basically do a "go back" or a "go forth". When the stack closed, it was
likely popping to another stack to go to a card there, which you had
probably visited recently.

Since you are getting the default arrow behavior instead of the scripted
one, that tells me that your arrowkey message isn't reaching your
handler for some reason. My first thought was that you might be using a
card group instead of a background group (and as an HC convert, that's
something you'll want to read up on,) but since it's an HC import that's
unlikely unless you've added some groups since you imported the stack.

Because the script works in a new stack, you're right it's probably
something in that particular stack. I agree that you should probably set
the hcBehavior of the stack to false; you don't need that in Rev and it
may clear up some issues. You can still continue to refer to bgs and
controls the way you are used to, though you'll probably change that
later as you get used to Rev.

About the advice to separate the data from the interface -- it's good
advice. Rev isn't meant to use cards as a database. But to be honest, I
wouldn't worry about that for now. If you have under 5,000 cards in the
stack it will work just as it does in HC and I'd keep that structure
until you've learned a little more about Rev. One thing at a time. If
this stack is just for your own use, you may not want to change its
database structure at all. I still use a number of old HC stacks in Rev
that keep databases -- for example, I have an address book stack with
one record per person and it works just fine. I don't even know 5,000
people. :)

If you can't isolate the arrowkey problem, feel free to upload the stack
somewhere and post a link to the list. You'll probably get a lot of
solutions once we can see the scripts.

Andre, I opened the stack with Media, but no luck. However, I created a new
stack and it worked (the short one). It seems obvious that the problem is in
the stack. However, I converted the same stack to Supercard and that same
script (the long one) works in SC, as well as in Hypercard. I did a search for
arrowKey in the search box and found it only once, in the stack script.

Maybe...

I have to apologize Haroldo, the logic in your script is correct!

But maybe "go next cd OF THIS BG" is making Rev choke somehow?
Since "...of this bg" is genuine HyperTalk after all...

I had also tested it this way. I have just done it again with another
new mainstack. But the result is different from what you get. At step
4) the open cell closes, but the next cell does not open.
I then replaced the dataGridLib.rev in my Toolset with a fresh copy I
had downloaded and now it works as it should. It has happened before
to me that the dataGridLib.rev somehow got a bit off and after
replacing it was ok again. I didn't think it would be the case this
time as all other datagrid stuff worked beautifully.

So problem solved,

2009-05-04 Thread Trevor DeVore

On May 2, 2009, at 11:05 PM, Shao Sean wrote:

modified it some to be a little cleaner as well as allowing the data
grid to know that it is sorting on the custom sorted column..

In the current release version of the data grid there are two issues
when performing a custom sort within SortDataGridColumn.

The first is that you can't set the dgIndexes property in order to
change the sort of the indexes. This doesn't affect your example
because you seem to be storing "size" as a hidden column in your table
and then using SortDataByKey to do the sort.

The second issue is that there is no easy way of updating the internal
props and UI to reflect the currently sorted column.

I've uploaded a test build of the library (1.0 build 8) which
addresses these issues. You can now set the dgIndexes property and I
created a handler out of existing data grid code that updates internal
props and UI: HiliteAndStoreSortByColumn. HiliteAndStoreSortByColumn
is meant to be called from within SortDataGridColumn when you are
performing a custom sort.

I also switched the sorting so that it occurs on mouseup rather than
mousedown.

Here is an example of using HiliteAndStoreSortByColumn and dgIndexes
in on SortDataGridColumn. Note that this is only required if you are
performing a custom sort.

on SortDataGridColumn pColumn
switch pColumn
case "MySpecialColumn"
## Update UI and 'sort by column'
HiliteAndStoreSortByColumn "MySpecialColumn"

## Get ready to perform custom sort.
put the dgIndexes of me into theIndexes -- so we
perform a stable sort
put the dgData of the dgControl of me into theDataA
-- get data so we can create sort list

## Create list of indexes and the key to sort by
repeat for each item theIndex in theIndexes
put theIndex & tab & theDataA[theIndex]
["MySpecialColumn"] & cr after theData

end repeat
delete the last char of theData

## At this point you can apply your special sort
function to item 2 to -1 of theData

## Now update the indexes of the data grid so new
order is reflected.

put empty into theIndexes
repeat for each line theLine in theData
put item 1 of theLine & comma after theIndexes
   end repeat
delete the last char of theIndexes

   ## Setting the dgIndexes will update the sort order
and redraw data.

set the dgIndexes of the dgControl of me to theIndexes

break
default
pass SortDataGridColumn
end switch
end SortDataGridColumn

Here are some notes to your sort handler.

command sortDataGridColumn pColumn
 constant kColumnSize = "size"
 local tOldSortKey
 lock screen

 switch (pColumn)
   case kColumnSize
 lock messages
put the dgProps["sort by column"] of me into tOldSortKey

## Note: You no longer need to set the 'sort by column' here. It is
set in HiliteAndStoreSortByColumn

set the dgProps["sort by column"] of me to kColumnSize

## Note: This code a) won't work and b) has already been handled at
this point.
## A) because you have messages locked and
dgColumnSortDirection is a custom property using get/setProp.
## B) Changing of ascending/descending is handled when you
click on the column header. This happens before

##SortDataGRidColumn is called.

if (the dgColumnSortDirection[kColumnSize] of me = "ascending")
then
set the dgColumnSortDirection[kColumnSize] of me to
"descending"

 else
set the dgColumnSortDirection[kColumnSize] of me to "ascending"
 end if
 unlock messages

## Note: FYI: I believe this gives you the exact same behavior as
setting the column sort to "numeric" in the property inspector.

##based on the code you aren't doing anything differently.
 sortDataByKey kColumnSize, "numeric", the
dgColumnSortDirection[kColumnSize] of me, FALSE

## Note: this is no longer needed with HiliteAndStoreSortByColumn.
set the dgHilite of group tOldSortKey of group "dgHeader" to
FALSE

set the dgHilite of group kColumnSize of group "dgHeader" to TRUE
 break
   default
 pass sortDataGridColumn
 break
 end switch
end sortDataGridColumn

Here is an example of SortDataGridColumn using updated data grid
library:

on SortDataGridColumn pColumn
constant kColumnSize = "size"

switch pColumn
case kColumnSize
HiliteAndStoreSortByColumn kColumnSize
SortDataByKey kColumnSize, "numeric", the
dgColumnSortDirection[kColumnSize] of me, FALSE

break

pass SortDataGridColumn

end Sort

Everyone gets frustrated from time to time Barry! It's actually really hard
to communicate via email, a problem with a graphic interface you have, and a
language you are learning - so the result can often be - well frustration :)

It's great to post questions, especially if you can copy and paste some code
snippets so people can give concrete help back. And remember that if you are
having a problem - you can bet that there will be several other people with
the same problems - so a clear post will not only help you but them as well.
So thanks for posting!

NB - if I were learning, I'd certainly look into adding "code completion".
GLX2 provides this, and I "think" there is even a free plugin they provide,
if you don;t want to buy their editor which as a user I'd highly recommend.

Hi Nhan,
The GLX2 script editor has this (but this script editor is a product you
must buy to use with Rev).

http://www.runrev.com/products/related-software/glx2/

It has a feature called 'clairvoyance' (= reading your thoughts). This is
something like code-assist in other programming environments.

I haven't used GLX2 myself for the last 6 months or so because I was getting
a lot of crashes with Rev on Windows and Linux, so I went back to using
plain old Rev on OS X.

There may be a demo version you can try to see if you like the way it works.
Personally, I think it is quite wonderful, and I do miss its features.

As I known, in Visual .Net has a plug-in called "Visual Assist" with
symbol "Apple". It helps developers in coding remember the syntax, key

"the specific "volatile" nature of PNG-images just having been created in

Maybe . . .

However it may have something to do with the way I made my odd-shapes
templates:

I initially exported primitives from Open Office Org. Draw as PNG
images [these do not contain transparent areas], then opened them in GIMP,
sprayed the white [i.e. would-be transparent areas] with PINK, and then
selected the pink, layered that onto a metallic template, deleted the
pink, leaving a metallic shape - then saved as a PNG.

I wonder if exporting my initial primitives from Open Office Org. Draw as
GIF images [which do contain transparent areas] and playing around
with them will allow me to end up with PNG images that behave themselves
with Runtime Revolution.

I have yet to try exporting button shapes as GIF images. I suppose
this would circumvent any "volatility" related to RR and PNG images.

However; it is Friday night - off to a concert of music by Buxtehude
(my favourite composer) with my wife - and tomorrow I have to sort out
the kitchen units I messed-up installing the dishwasher. So, will
try the above on Sunday.

I do feel that the documentation on imageData and alphaData is woefully
lacking. The "happy, little experiments" I seem to be conducting at the
moment, leave me no clearer on the subject: idiot savant!

2008-12-13 Thread Richmond Mathewson
viktoras didziulis wrote:

"I should agree with Dave's point. Especially in countries, where English
is not native language like Lithuania and Bulgaria ;-) "

he is exactly right.

The only 2 things that can be said in RR's favour
(as opposed to PASCAL and Co.) are:

1. the programming language can (but doesn't always!) resemble a
real, spoken language.

2. objects 'walk around with their own code' (c.f. Visual Basic 5).

I teach an intro to RunRev (3 x 90 minutes) as part of a
"Summer of Fun" English course (sorry about the awful title,
but what else do you call that sort of course?)for kids who
already have a fair bit of English. Without a modicum of English
the kids would be lost.

As a experiment, I got BBC BASIC running inside some
BBC Micro emulators

and got some kids going with that. Their only, initial
objection, was that they had become dependent on a GUI
and felt "funny" with a command line: after a few gruff
"Grow Ups" they got on with things. Now they preferred RR,
but only from the point of view that they could make
visual programs; they didn't really see the programming
language as particularly easier.

Of course if one wants one can go all the way to those
"programming languages" where all one does is drag building
blocks around a screen. However, my experience teaches me that while
kids can rapidly get a blood-rush to the brain by getting
working 'programlets', they learn little or no transferable
skills; take them from that and shove them in front of a machine
with RR, or BASIC, and they are stuck fast, back at ground zero.

What has to be admitted by the "I want it now, and preferably
with no effort at all" brigade is that everything comes at a price:
and I, for one, don't want to spend my old age in a world inhabited
by people who can't or won't make a mental effort for anything.

All the members of this Use-List have dragged themselves through the
learning curve of at least one programming language (err, what do you
call it again; RevTalk, Revolution, Transcript, and so on); and, like it
or not, that is a necessary part of the process of understanding how
programming languages work. And, without that sort of understanding,
however "user-friendly" a language/RAD is, sooner or later one is
going to come up against a socking great mental wall.

I usually spend the first 60 minutes with the computers turned OFF,
and play around with lots of yoghurt pots and beans
(the Container Metaphor); and talk a lot of rubbish about production
lines in factories. Plus, prior to that, throw slide-rules at the kids so
that Mathematics moves out of the computers and calculators into
their brains.

I am sick to death of people who go on
a course and then inform me they can program computers because they
can read their e-mail, type a letter in Word, and run up a spread-sheet
in Excel.

Frankly, 'programming' by dragging virtual LEGO blocks around is not
programming; unless, of course, you consider the ability to knock up
a power point presentation the peak of programming skills!

As every Bulgarian child, supposedly, is taught English at school (and
the 'supposedly' is how I make my money), there should not be a
particularly high barrier for teenagers to jump over with RR.

The barrier, in Bulgaria, comes from the fact that educational-method
is still rooted in the 'swot-and-regurgitate' school of thought that
Britain abandoned in the 60s. This stifles the type of abstract
and creative thought that is needed for good programming (try and
make a concrete model of a for-next loop).

However, in Bulgaria there is hope, as education can move into the space
that in Britain (amongst other places points-west) was abandoned for
the effortless pap that now passes for education.

Sorry about the rant; but I do feel extremely strongly about the
above points.

sincerely, Richmond Mathewson.

Now what I am going to write will be, I hope, contentious and stimulate
a lot of CONSTRUCTIVE comment:

I don't like being spoon-fed, and have spent my life in Education

reasonably efficient brains - and those brains are to be used.

What I like about Runtime Revolution consists of both its capabilities
and what it does not offer prepackaged; or, let me draw a parallel with
English (a language, as a Scot, I have made my living from for many years);
RR supplies the grammar, the syntax and the vocabulary; but, thank God,
it does not supply the sentences; that is to say, it allows us an awful
lot of freedom. This has been demonstrated time and time again on this
Use-List, where many people have come up with many solutions to a single
problem - this is fantastic. I, for one, have never had an urge to live
in a totalitarian state (especially as I live and work in a country that used
to be a totalitarian state, and is still, 20 years later, suffering,
considerably, from the psychological aftermath), in fact one of the reasons
I like life in Bulgaria rather than Scotland is that society is not becoming
increasingly rule-bound. Nobody can accuse Runtime Revolution of being
rule-bound! And, ultimately it is psychologically healthier for us to
retrace parts of inventing the wheel (hence the collection of slide-rules down
in my school, which I force on my pupils for 1 day a year).

I had this problem also, and various people on the list suggested the
solution. You have to cover all the ways you can quit from a
standalone, on both platforms. Here's the thread I saved:

Re: Re: saving data in a standalone before quit
(Was Re: (mac) application menu)

Peter,

When you use the Quit menu item, Mac OS X sends an event to
Revolution. You can catch this message with the AppleEvent handler or
the shutdownRequest handler. On Mac OS X, I prefer to use the
AppleEvent handler most of the time.

If you use either the AppleEvent handler or the shutdownRequest
handler without a pass command, the application will not quit by
itself (you can also lock messages and issue the quit command).

When you press command-Q, the Quit menu item should work just like
when you use the mouse to select this menu item and you can catch the
AppleEvent and shutdownRequest messages again. However, your script
may catch the commandKeyDown message. If you don't pass this message
with the pass command, your application may not quit.

There are versions of Revolution that don't pass the commandKeydown
message because of a bug. There are also versions that don't pass the
AppleEvent message.

If you are using Rev 2.8.1, problems with quitting are probably due
to a script.

This was driving me crazy too. After messing around with it, I pieced
the following together and it's worked for me (I am using Rev 2.6.1):

on appleEvent pClass,pID,pSender --I got this from Ken Ray's web site
  switch (pClass & pID)
  case "aevtquit"
answer "Save changes?" with "Don't Save" or "Save"
if it is "Save" then
  doSaveStuff
  pass appleEvent
else pass appleEvent
break
  default
pass appleEvent
break
  end switch

end appleEvent

on closeStackrequest
  Global homeStack
if the short name of this stack is homeStack then
answer "Save changes?" with "Don't Save" or "Save"
if it is "Save" then
  doSaveStuff
end if
  end if
  pass closeStackrequest
end closeStackrequest

on shutdownRequest --I only use this for Windows
  Global homeStack
if the platform contains "Win" then
if the short name of this stack is homeStack then
answer "Save changes?" with "Don't Save" or "Save"
  if it is "Save" then
doSaveStuff
  end if
end if
  end if
  pass shutdownRequest
end shutdownRequest

Marty Knapp

**

Where to put the handlers depends on the structure of your stack
system. You want them high enough up in the hierarchy to trap the
messages no matter where the user is when the quit/close is
triggered, but keep in mind that putting them in the main stack
script will cause closeStackrequest to be called every time a
subordinate stack closes.

substitute it in the bundle for the one that Rev created, the icon
then appears when I copy the app to a different folder, and all
appears well. Has anyone else seen this? Could this be related to the

Your AppleScript should look something like this:
--3 lines, watch line wraps

tell application "Finder"
   open folder "Macintosh HD:Users:MeUser:Desktop:myFolder"
end tell

Your Rev script should look like this:
--a do statement is single line so you'll need to unwrap this
--the tricky bit is quotes and spaces in the right place

do "tell application " & quote & "Finder" & quote & cr & "open
folder " &
quote & "Macintosh HD:Users:MeUser:Desktop:myFolder" & quote & cr
& "end

tell" as applescript

Just FYI, there's a couple of other approaches (some are "best
practices") when executing AppleScript from Rev...

1) Put the script into a custom property or field and execute it
(although I wouldn't recommend fields for a variety of reasons):

do (the openFolderScript of this stack) as AppleScript

2) If you need to do it inline, use the \ line continuation
feature to

help make your code more readable:

  put "Macintosh HD:Users:MeUser:Desktop:myFolder" into tFolder
  put "tell application" && quote & "Finder" & quote & cr & \
"open folder" && quote & tFolder & quote & cr & \
"end tell" into tScript
  do tScript as AppleScript

3) Use backquotes (`) for quotation marks while building your script,
then replace them with double quotes before you execute your
script (a

variation of #2 above is shown below):

4) Use the format() function to put in quotes (\") and returns

Personally, I usually use #3 unless it's a one-liner, in which case I

Also with the upcoming Rev 2.9 having the ability to do "do ...

having a good way to handle other scripting languages is important,
IMHO.

2) If you need to do it inline, use the \ line continuation feature to
help make your code more readable:

  put "Macintosh HD:Users:MeUser:Desktop:myFolder" into tFolder
  put "tell application" && quote & "Finder" & quote & cr & \
"open folder" && quote & tFolder & quote & cr & \
"end tell" into tScript
  do tScript as AppleScript

3) Use backquotes (`) for quotation marks while building your script,
then replace them with double quotes before you execute your script (a
variation of #2 above is shown below):

  put "tell application`Finder` & cr & \
"open folder `Macintosh HD:Users:MeUser:Desktop:myFolder`" & cr
& \

"end tell" into tScript
replace "`" with quote in tScript
  do tScript as AppleScript

4) Use the format() function to put in quotes (\") and returns (\n) on
the fly (be careful though as you can't use continuation chars with
format IIRC):

  put format("tell application \"Finder\"\n") & \
format("open folder \"Macintosh
HD:Users:MeUser:Desktop:myFolder\"\n") & \

Depends on what your referring to. If you are talking about keyboard
shortcuts in Rev IDE, or using AppleScript (and I believe the Windows
equivalent or other programs like perl) to copy data to the clipboard and
then use Rev to manipulate it, unfortunately there is a long history of this
being a 'intermittent' hard to reproduce problem. Although for keyboard
shortcuts the usual response is use the menu items, as these reliably work

Your AppleScript should look something like this:
--3 lines, watch line wraps

tell application "Finder"
   open folder "Macintosh HD:Users:MeUser:Desktop:myFolder"
end tell

Your Rev script should look like this:
--a do statement is single line so you'll need to unwrap this
--the tricky bit is quotes and spaces in the right place

do "tell application " & quote & "Finder" & quote & cr & "open folder " &
quote & "Macintosh HD:Users:MeUser:Desktop:myFolder" & quote & cr & "end
tell" as applescript

If the idea is that you want your program to open the actual folder so a
user knows where they are, the above approach is OK, if on the other hand
you simply want to open the folder to determine what the contents are, or to
be able to save files into it, there are quicker and easier ways in Rev to
do that.

Yes, but only for certain chars that would cause problems in queries
like a single quote. If you have carriage returns, you'll have to
replace the CRs with some other character for storage, and then convert
them back when you retrieve the data.

Hi All.

I am having an issue that I know was addressed in a previous post but
I cannot seem to find it. I have established some functions to work
with mySQL databases, and all is working fine except that whenever I
build an SQL statement with values that include commas, carriage
returns and the like, it hoses the sql statement. Isn't there a way
of delimiting reserved characters in an sql statement? Something like
preceding them with a backslash?

You can't do it with Revolution directly, but there is a work-around here:

Shakobox only works with QuickTime musical instruments, and is a bit
easier on Macs than on Windows. On Windows, writing to a file works best
(writing to console is broken, I think.) The original author is no
longer supporting this, so it is now offered as-is.

2007-03-01 Thread hibis . jmr1

Hello everyone,

I would like to insert in my application a little music generated by
code and not by recording it previously.

I remember, when using hyperCard (it was the good time), this was very
simple, fo instance :

play "boing" "f#5w c#3e a#4w"

is there a way to do something like that with revolution (I have not
found in the documentation)

Any suggestion to go this way ?

Thanks
Jean-Marc

I haven't tried filtering before but maybe you can get some ideas
from this page:

I think you need to use the database specific queries for this
information. Here are ones for mysql, sqlite and postgresql (I
*think* the postgresql one is right):

put "mytable" into pTable

SWITCH theDBType# get query to extract table info
CASE "mysql"
put "SHOW FULL COLUMNS FROM `" & pTable & "`" into theSQL
break
CASE "sqlite"
put "PRAGMA table_info(" & quote & pTable & quote & ")" into
theSQL
break
CASE "postgresql"
put "SELECT column_name FROM information_schema.columns WHERE
table_name = '" & pTable & "'" into theSQL

break
END SWITCH

Using one of the above queries and open a cursor. You should then
get one record for each field.

Thanks Roger! Yes, I do plan to incorporate support for the Mac & Windows Icon

This may be a nice feature for future Revolution releases. Auto Field
Formatting and validation. It's a lot of work to do this though, I
know. It just seems ugly from an overhead perspective to trap for
every keydown at this high a level in every field for which you want
it. I may end up writing some scripts that check for properties of
objects and respond according to what is found there.

Hi Robert,

This turned out to be a text entry box not set up right

how do you set the text entry box to only up to 3 numbers and no CR?

Put this into the fields script:

on keydown tKey
if tKey is not a number then
 exit keydown
  end if
 ## This way only number will pass
if the num of chars of me < 3 then
pass keydown
  else
   beep ## or whatever
  end if
end keydown

Et voila :-)

Hi Rev listers,

Given the wide range of skills in the Rev community, we thought this
would be a good place to start. As part of our new Revolution-based

Mac and Windows, especially Windows XP.

We are looking for people who:
1. really know their stuff
2. can communicate it well through screen-capture videos or stills
and very brief text

We will package the tutorials, do the advertising, sales, and

2006-03-30 Thread John Patten
Hi Ken...

Actually, dividing the number of nodes by ten gave me the number of
attributes(I had ten nodes under each attribute). I was using this to determine
which attribute to "navigate" to once the user selects "Next." (At this point
in my learning I was not familiar with revXMLNextSibling and
revXMLPreviousSibling :-)

Then I added the deleteXMNode and my navigation strategy was all for not.
Then... I learned how to use the revXMLNextSibling and revXMLPreviousSibling
and everythings great!

If it would help anyone here are scripts I'm using now to navigate through XML
info:

//Moving to Previous data - just substitute revXMLNextSibling to move forward.

on mouseUp
put cd fld "XMLID" into tTargetTree
put cd fld "URL_ID" into tTargetAttribute

   put revXMLPreviousSibling(tTargetTree,tTargetAttribute) into targetNode
if the result is empty then
 exit mouseUp
 else

put targetNode into cd fld "Url_ID"

 put revXMLChildContents(tTargetTree,TargetNode,tab&"*",cr,true,-1) into theData

  put the itemdel into OrigItemDel
  set the itemDel to "*"
put item 2 of line 1 of theData into cd fld "subject"
put item 2 of line 2 of theData into cd fld "Key_Words"
put item 2 of line 3 of theData into cd fld "Grade"
put item 2 of line 4 of theData into cd fld "standard"
put item 2 of line 5 of theData into cd fld "Title"
put item 2 of line 6 of theData into cd fld "Description"
put item 2 of line 7 of theData into cd fld "Submitted_By"
put item 2 of line 8 of theData into cd fld "email_address"
put item 2 of line 9 of theData into cd fld "School"

Just curious, John... why did you need to divide the number of child nodes
by 10 and add 1 to get the new node number? Wouldn't it just be (the number
of children + 1) ?

You mean all the child nodes have the same content? Can you provide an

Thanks Andre -- this solves the practical problem (except for Word's inability
to actually paste size 10 text in any font -- ah, Microsoft!) -- it gives the
proper formatting as specified in the formatting field.

I'm still curious about the failure of the htmltext function to include font &
size info. Is the documentation just plain wrong?

2006-03-22 Thread pmbrig
OK I did what you suggest, but it's not working:

put theHdr into fld "formatPrintText"
set the textFont of char 1 to -1 of fld "formatPrintText" to "Bookman Old Style"
set the textSize of char 1 to -1 of fld "formatPrintText" to "10"
set the clipboarddata["html"] to the htmltext of fld "formatPrintText"
-- set the clipboarddata["text"] to theHdr
launch letterPath with wordpath

This still gives a paste (into Word for OSX, or into a hypercard stack, or into
Word 4 for OS9) in the textFont and textSize of the default stack properties,
not what I set the properties of the field text to. I even tried using

set the clipboarddata["html"] to the htmltext of char 1 to -1 of fld
"formatPrintText"

and that doesn't do it either.

(Just for fun, I tried setting the stack textFont/textSize properties to empty,
and my paste then was in Lucia Grande size 11 -- hunh?)

Next experiment:

put theHdr into fld "formatPrintText"
set the textFont of char 1 to -1 of fld "formatPrintText" to "Bookman Old Style"
set the textSize of char 1 to -1 of fld "formatPrintText" to "10"
put the htmlText of char 1 to -1 of fld "formatPrintText" into fld "testFld"
exit to top

This shows the htmltext of the chunk in the test field, namely:

Iphegenia Aardvaark
123 So. Huntington Ave,
Boston, MA 02114

So apparently the htmlText property isn't giving font or size info...

I tried the rtfText of the field and of char 1 to -1 of the field and I get

{\rtf\mac
Iphegenia Aardvaark
\par 123 So. Huntington Ave,
\par Boston, MA  02114}

So the rtfText property doesn't give font or size info either.

The rev documentation says (under HTMLtext):
Revolution uses a subset of HTML tags that includes font, size, style, and text
color information.

So is this a bug? Is it something about my version of Dreamcard?

When you set the text properties of a field, the text it contains has no
styling of its own, it uses inheritance of the field's properties to
give an appearance of styling. Therefore, when you copy that text, there
is no particular htmltext assigned to it.

To fix that, set the styling of the actual characters in the text
itself, which does assign html properties to the text:

set the textfont of char 1 to -1 of fld "formatPrintText" \
  to "Bookman Old Style"
set the textsize of char 1 to -1 of fld "formatPrintText" to 10

This should give the results you are looking for.

This is what I use in one of my solutions:

put fld "quiz_item1" & tab into fld "data field" of stack "data sample"
put fld "quiz_item2" & tab after fld "data field" of stack "data sample"

Then write out, etc., etc.

If you want the data to go to the next line instead of being
separated by tabs then

put fld "quiz_item1" & return into fld "data field" of stack "data
sample"
put fld "quiz_item12" & return after fld "data field" of stack "data

How to Download Data from the Internet (was: Re: (no subject))

2006-01-24 Thread Eric Chatonet

Hi Dahiya,

The "How to Download Data from the Internet" tutorial might help you:
This stack explains how to test the user connection, an url validity,
why and how to use get url or load url, retrieve data from framed
pages, give an account of download progress, manage errors, display
retrieved data (web pages, stacks, compressed or not), etc.

You will access this tutorial through "Tutorials Picker" a free
plugin that interfaces with the So Smart Software website in order to
display all available tutorials stacks directly from the web.

You will find it by going to http://www.sosmartsoftware.com/.
Revolution/Plugins or Tutorials section.

you can do so, but then you will have to "load" that stack and NOT
just "go" to it!

Check the docs for "load".

Thanks Xavier,

Your information allowed me to solve the problem on a pure PC + XP

But did not resolved the trouble with Soft PC

It did change something but not all characters .

Thanks anyway

PS I send a new mail called "(no subject) QWERTY / AZERTY with
Virtual PC"

I achieve it OK on Windows XP, using the controls given by "Regions
Option".

But it didn't work with virtual PC and Windows 2000
If I choose "Fr" I'm still in QWERTY (Rev and Words too)
If I choose "EN" then I get "AZERTY" as far as 'Normal" alpha
characters are concerned but screwed with Special characters as " &
and so on.

Looking for PC Expert Help,

Working on Mac I'm developing an application I'd like to work on both
sides of the frontier.

I do most of my test using "Virtual PC".

As far as "Controls" are concerned I'm fine.

I began to use the Keyboard to enter data and got into trouble: the
keyboard was working as "QWERTY" KB although mine was an "AZERTY"

As I didn't find any explanation I installed Rev 1.6.1 on a true XP
machine and got the same trouble:

Revolution itself when scripting was considering the KeyBoard as
"Qwerty" although it was not.

Look for this into "Revolution Preference", then into XP Keyboard set
up and found nothing.

Can somebody tell me where I should go to use my Azerty KeyBoard ?

Many thanks

Hi Charles,

Good on you! (sorry, I spent 2 years in Australia).

The gallery was getting so big that by default I only show the recent
additions to the gallery. To see the metadata writer, you have to use
the top menu and select "added any time" and push on the "go"
button. Alternativily, you can use the link below:

Point taken, I will find a way to have this stack always appear in
the gallery.

Marielle

I thought I'd upload my (man is it ever) noncommercial app, the
English Metrics Tutorial, to your education site; but I don't see
the "metadata file creator" advertised on that page. (I'm using
Safari, if that makes a difference.) So I'm not sure what steps to
follow.

Reply off-list if you'd prefer.
