Hi :)
That sort of checking gets considerably faster as you begin to find the powers
and limitations of the new thing.  Also as you find faster and easier ways of

there are two things I would like to see. being a total user, I have no
idea how easy it is to do either.

first, I would like to have separate icons so I can just open calc or writer
and not have to open a home page, then select the application.

If you work in Windows open the folder where the LibO is installed and
find the

program: folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\LibreOffice 3.4\program)
Then sort the files by type to have the .exe files on the top of list.
Drag and drop their icons to the desktop to create shortcuts (e.g.
scalc.exe for Calc)

Using the shortcuts wil open the desired application directly.

...

Another wish list item. I have my hard disk partitioned so I have all my
wordprocessing files in one folder and all my spreadsheet files in another.
I have to navigate back and forth. if I am in the spreadsheet, I have to
save-as, then navigate to the calc folder. there may be advantages for
doing this another way, but this is my wish list.
Create on desktop shortcuts to those folders and start editing your
documents in them
(right click - new - Libo table ... the menu items may be different
originaly in English)

When saving the document the starting folder should be offered)

By the way - I think that storing the documents into folders depending
on used application

is not the best idea.
I prefere to store documents using a problem structure folders (e.g.
DATA/Clients/Company1/Reports/Financial/2011/...)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Suggestions for LibreOffice

2012-01-29 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
This thread is a good one to 'hijack' for your purpose :)  The link for posting
wish-list items or Feature requests (whatever you want to call them) is
https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/bug/
without a dot at the end.  When you post a bug-report one of the drop-downs has
Feature request or something similar.

Please let us know which Operating System you are using.  Most including
Windows do have individual icons already but not cluttering up the desktop.
You can add them there.  In Windows Xp click on the Start button then

All Programs - LibreOffice ...

Now right-click on Writer and choose

Send to .. - Desktop (create shortcut)

Since you also use Calc it might be good to do the same with that one but since
you don't seem to use the rest you don't need to have them cluttering up
desktop 'real-estate'.

Another way of opening files is just to double-click on them, or right-click
and then the button Open with   LibreOffice should be in the list but
only if you have already opened that sort of file with LibreOffice.  You can
choose to always open with this app and that tick-box is already
ticked-by-default in Windows.

Navigation might be easier if you use the Places panel on the left-hand-side
of the load/save dialogue box.  It might be possible that you have it set to
Explorer/Tree instead of Places.  In most OSes you can, to some extent, set
which folders are displayed in there but i am not sure how to set mount-points
in Windows.  Different partitions should be there already tho.

Regards from
Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Help with linking to data on a website

2012-01-29 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think Base has to be the way forwards.  It is a bit of a steep learning curve
but this sort of project is perfect for it.  Spreadsheets would be really messy
and hopelessly complicated and would never really allow you to play around with
the data so freely.  This guide might help
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications#LibreOffice_Base_Guide
Note that the 2nd chapter is a very rough draft and not really meant for the
general public yet.

Subject: [libreoffice-users] Help with linking to data on a website
To: users@global.libreoffice.org
Date: Sunday, 29 January, 2012, 4:10

I'm attempting to create a spreadsheet  in LibreCalc for Fantasy Football
that includes every active QB, RB, WR, TE, and K from Yahoo.  I only picked
Yahoo because I've gotten further along with their data than any other
website.

So far, I've figured out how to get a list of names and teams for the above
positions.  What I've done so far is create a spreadsheet with each position
on a separate worksheet.  I was able to grab the names and teams for each
position by doing the following (example for RBs):  Insert Link to
External Data URL of external data source
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players?type=positionc=NFLpos=RB Available
Tables/Ranges HTML_10.

That gets me a list of the names and teams for each position and also
includes a hyperlink to the player's individual page.

Here's my issue:  From each player's individual page I also want to pull
their Date of Birth (Running Backs over 30 are a red flag) and the year they
entered the league (Wide Receivers tend to break out in Year 3).  I haven't
yet figured out how to dynamically pull the additional data based on the
initial web hyperlink.  The additional data that I need is all contained in
the player's individual pages (HTML_2 from the player's page).

The secondary links must be dynamic and based on the initial list of
players, since it's likely that players will come and go.

Can this be done at all?  Will it require the use of macros?  Would I be
better served to just do this whole thing using LibreBase?  That would bring
up a whole host of new questions, considering I have very little experience
creating a database.

One more minor question:  Can I just delete any unwanted lines before or
after the data that is pulled in?  For instance, when I pull in the position
page there are 2 lines at the top that I would just assume delete.  If I
delete them will that mess things up when I refresh the dynamic data?

There's obviously more hurdles to overcome further down the road with this
list, but this is where I am right now.

My reason for attempting this is because I have spent a ton of time trying
to track down this data and manually populate my master spreadsheet.  If I
could figure out a way to Push a button and get all of this together
automatically then that would save a bunch of time (even if I spend a ton of
time figuring out how to do it initially).  Plus, I'm just a geek and I want
to say that I did it.

Eventually, I'd like to pull the dynamic draft rankings data into my master
spreadsheet so that I'll have several different websites' draft data updated
automatically.  If anybody is interested in helping out with this project
I'd be more than willing to share my work (assuming you aren't in my Fantasy
league).

And by the way: Your video explains nothing since it does not tell
anything about the type of link which refuses to update nor does it
indicate that it is an Excel file.

Just in case you are using a formula link like this:
='file://path/file.xls'#Sheet1.$A$1 (again, there are 4 other methods in
addition)
Simply copying that formula out of your formula bar and paste right into
the mail would explain each and every aspect of your problem which could
be an inappropriate type of file, some quirky URL with quotes in the
path, a non-existent file, a formula that returns more than one value(so
it should be entered as array formula) and possibly more ...

Plain text can be so easy and by far more useful than multi-media.

[libreoffice-users] relative paths to linked graphics do not work

2012-01-29 Thread Daniel Wibbing
Hi everyone!

I am new to this mailing list. I hope I am using it in the right way:

The situation:
I have a document (my dissertation) with a lot of pictures, which I inserted as
links.
The document is in a folder Dissertation
The pictures are in the folder Bilder/... in the folder Dissertation

I copied the the folder Dissertation to different volumes when I was working
on my project at different places.
I always updated LibreOffice to the most recent version. I now have LibreOffice
3.4.5

The problem is:
The pictures are not shown any more in my document.
Instead only the absolute link from one of the volumes on which I added the
picture is shown.
example:
file:///Users/daniel/Volumes/share/SensMiLi/Dissertation/Bilder/Kapitel
2/Hall_effect_A.png

My question is:
Why does LibreOffice not find the relative path to the pictures in the
myProject folder, which always stayed the same?
example: /Bilder/Kapitel 2/Hall_effect_A.png

I would be very happy if you could help me! :)

Use a spreadsheet where the DATE function in combination of MOD, INT and
others can generate arbitrary sequences.
Select your sequence, copy, select the table icon in the main database

[libreoffice-users] Does LO work with Cinnamon - GNOME2 shell in 3?

2012-01-29 Thread webmaster for Kracked Press Productions

Anyone out there have used Linux Mint 12 with LO?

This is actually a developer's question, but needs to be asked of the
Users as well.

Does anyone know if LO works with the Cinnamon, which is a shell [I
think that is the correct term] that is placed over GNOME 3.x so it
looks and works like GNOME2.x? I remember that there was some issues
with LO working with GNOME 3.x desktop environment's way of displaying
windows. Since the 2.x project is closed and people were going to
other distros and desktops due to their dislike of GNOME 3.x, Linux
Mint decided to develop a way for people to have their GNOME 2.x style
of desktop on 3.x. It seemed that people were going to Mint since they
still supported 2.x, but when they could no longer get it from their
source [Mint is a fork of Ubuntu, with another Mint a fork of Debian]
they had to provide a GNOME 2.x style of desktop shell to keep their
users happy.

Cinnamon is not stable, according to the web site. It is on Linux Mint
12, and either in the repository, a Git repository, or in a PPA for;
Ubuntu 11.10, Fedora 16, OpenSUSE 12.1, Arch Linux, and Gentoo.

I have not tried it, since I am still using Ubuntu 10.04. I did not
like Ubuntu's switch to GNOME3 and could not use it with my needs. So I
was stuck with 10.xx. If LO will support that desktop shell
combination, I will now be able to look into having a more up-to-date
OS, other than what Ubuntu places in its 10.04 repository updates. At
least 10.04 now shows LO 3.4.4-402 as the latest version in the
repository, which I installed from LO's web site when it came out.

http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/?page_id=61

With Win 8 going to the Tablet-style of desktop environment, like GNOME
3 seems to be as well, there is talk about many users will either have
to back-port it to Win 7 or go to Linux. If Linux is chosen, then they
have to use something other than the standard GNOME 3 desktop.

For myself, I use a combination of GNOME2.x and KDE since there are
packages in KDE that are better than GNOME 2.x's version and some of
GNOME 2.x works better than KDE for me for the actual desktop. Many of
the KDE system monitoring and modification packages are easier for me
to use over GNOME 2.x versions. So I have a interesting setup. Now,
if I can get a replacement drive for my test system, I will try Mint 12
with Cinnamon, but it may take time to get that really old system [bios
will not work with any Windows newer than Win ME, not even Win2000] a
replacement drive. So it will be awhile before I can test Cinnamon with
LO, and I would like to know if it does work well with LO.

Hi everyone!

I am new to this mailing list. I hope I am using it in the right way:

The situation:
I have a document (my dissertation) with a lot of pictures, which I inserted as
links.
The document is in a folder Dissertation
The pictures are in the folder Bilder/... in the folder Dissertation

I copied the the folder Dissertation to different volumes when I was working
on my project at different places.
I always updated LibreOffice to the most recent version. I now have LibreOffice
3.4.5

The problem is:
The pictures are not shown any more in my document.
Instead only the absolute link from one of the volumes on which I added the
picture is shown.
example:
file:///Users/daniel/Volumes/share/SensMiLi/Dissertation/Bilder/Kapitel
2/Hall_effect_A.png

My question is:
Why does LibreOffice not find the relative path to the pictures in the
myProject folder, which always stayed the same?
example: /Bilder/Kapitel 2/Hall_effect_A.png

I would be very happy if you could help me! :)
Daniel

Right now, from what I have seen in the screen clips for Mint 12, I do

I think I understand your query. My suggestion is to try each select
statement separately. Once each one is working correctly start with the
first and add one union at a time. You might need to change the aliases
on the second and following selects.

Well it is supposed to be fixed in the future 3.5, at least in RC2 the
addressbook wizard works again, on all platforms as far as I can tell,
BUT, the mozab (mozilla address book support) doesn't seem to be able to
be built on Ubuntu at the moment, which means that unless the Ubuntu

The wizard still doesn't work on
LibreOffice 3.5.0rc2

.deb from LO. It's nothing to do with the distrib - but this is running
on Ubuntu 10.10.

However, opening Base selecting connect to existing database does show
(for me) 'SeaMonkey Address Book' and 'Thunderbird/IceDove Address Book'
- those do work - partially[1].
However, Edit|Database|Properties is greyed out on SeaMonkey, I can
only select 'Connection type'. On Thunderbird I can select the profile.

[1] I ran a test by adding test addressbooks on Thundrbird and SeaMonkey
(both are Mozilla versions, not distro related) in additionto the
regular exising address books:

In SeaMonkey: TestingSeaMonkey w/1 address
In Thunderbird: ThunderbirdTest w/1 address

I then opened 3.5RC2 opened Base|Connect to existing
database|Thunderbird/IceDove Address Book|Finish|Yes Register|Open for
editing| Base opens the SeaMonkey address book (SeaMonkey version 2.7b5)
instead of the Thunderbird (version 9.0.1) address book. I can tell this
because it included the 'TestingSeaMonkey' address book in the tables.
If I repeat the above opening the SeaMonkey address book, Base opens the
correct address book (the SeaMonkey one which includes 'TestingSeaMonkey'.

So something is still screwed up. Profiles/address books for both are
exactly where they should be:
Thunderbird: ~/.thunderbird/profile/
SeaMonkey: ~/.mozilla/seamonkey/profile/

I don't use emacs, so I don't know how complex keyboard shortcuts you may
need. In LO you can assign any function to almost any combination of Ctrl,
Shift, Alt and keyboard keys. But you can't do complex sequences like ctrl+x,
then f (with or without ctrl). LO may simply not be sufficient enough.

How about a libre office mode for emacs? :)

I can imagine that developers would be more than happy to include it in some
future release, but I don't think anyone would devote time to do so (it would
be really low on priorities list). So if you really need it, perhaps you have
to write it yourself.

Anyway, you should ask about it on developers' mailing list.

Tools - AutoCorrect Options

Thanks, I found it!

Did you see all the other options in the AutoCorrect Option tabs? There
are a lot of parts like exemption, replace, auto complete, that might be
useful to someone.

The ignore double spaces is an option that needs to be looked. To be
honest, I do not know what it does when it is checked. I use double
spacing between lines of text, since that was the preferred way the
last time I took an English course that required typed papers. The
professor required double spaces between lines of the proper English.
I wonder if double spacing could be for double spacing in the line spacing?

But, there are many option in the Auto Correction window's tabs. They
need to be looked at carefully to see which ones are needed or even
wanted for your typing of a default document.

One thing that bothers me it that the replace option list does not
replace consistently. Most of the first part of the list, down till you
get to the fraction replacements, seems not to want to work most of the
time. The first one of the -- to the long dash is one I could use a
lot, but half the time it does not work when editing the text and adding
the double dashes and expect the long-dash to be shown.

Also, who came up with all those misspelled words? Is there a chance
that any of them might be wanted in some form of English or non-English
language?

Well I was just wondering about those things.

Still having some controls over the auto-correction helps.

Hi Brian,

you are a genius! :)
Using this little dot in front of the path name really works!
 ./Bilder/Kapitel 2/Hall_effect_A.png

Like this I am now able to delete the beginnings of the absolute path names,
set the dot in front of the relative part and the picture will be shown. Great!

However this is certainly not the most elegant way a program should work.

So I would guess that there is a real bug in LibreOffice concerning that.

Re: [libreoffice-users] emacs mode?

2012-01-29 Thread anthropornis
I am curious, which, if any, word processing programs (not text editors)
actually have an Emacs mode? Compared to the broader base of
non-techie word processor users, making a word processor behave like
Emacs would be extraordinarily niche oriented.

Why don't you just actually write documents in Emacs and do some LaTex
or similar formatting like some other Emacs users do?

Anyway, you should ask about it on developers' mailing list.

What type of documents are you typing?

emacs seems to me that it is used for mainframe programming editors,
not word processors. I could be wrong about that, if there is a
specific word processor that uses the emacs key shortcuts withing
their control/navigation system. It has been many years since I used an
editor that used those [or vi/vim] commands. When I do the editing for
programming, I use Kate or gedit for Linux and NoteTab++ for Windows. I
find they are much easier to use than the original text/program editors
that used vi/vim/emacs editing controls instead of mouse/menu controls.
Well I got spoiled after all those years on a dumb terminal or typing
punch cards. I prefer a window environment like GNOME2 gives you over
Terminal use that works a lot like what I had to do with the mainframes
I worked on. Well Win XP/pro is nice as well, if I have to use a
non-Linux system.

So the question is what you are doing for the typing?

I know that if you have had years worth of finger-memory for using the
keyboard shortcuts, that is is hard to get use to using the mouse/menu
option and the word processor's internal shortcuts like Ctrl-Alt-f to
open the Find/Replace option[s] or Ctrl-A for select all. I do not
remember these shortcuts much. Each package seems to have their own
definations beyond Ctrl-x, -c, and -v. Some change Ctrl-c and -z as well.

Re: [libreoffice-users] relative paths to linked graphics do not work

2012-01-29 Thread Dan Lewis
Daniel:
Perhaps a little studying on how relative paths work is in order.
When you see a relative path that begins with ./xxx, this means to begin
looking for xxx in the same folder you are presently in. (xxx can be a
folder or file.) When you see a relative path that begins with ../xxx,
this means to begin looking for xxx in the folder containing the folder
you are presently in.
For example: the document is in /home/Document/aaa/bbb. The picture
file something.png is in /home/Document/aaa/bbb/ccc. Then the relative
path for the picture file is ./ccc/something.png. You are in the bbb
folder. Look for ccc in it. Then look for something.png in the ccc
folder.
But if the path for something.png
is /home/Document/aaa/ddd/something.png, the relative path would
be ../ddd/something.png. You are in the bbb folder. The paths says go
back to the aaa folder and locate for the ddd folder there. Then locate
something.png in the ddd folder.

relative to *something*, and you are assuming that this will be the

Did you see all the other options in the AutoCorrect Option tabs?
There are a lot of parts like exemption, replace, auto complete, that
might be useful to someone.

The ignore double spaces is an option that needs to be looked. To be
honest, I do not know what it does when it is checked. I use double
spacing between lines of text, since that was the preferred way the
last time I took an English course that required typed papers. The
professor required double spaces between lines of the proper
English. I wonder if double spacing could be for double spacing in
the line spacing?

/snip/

I think the double spaces refers to the old scheme I was taught in
school 60 years ago to double-space after a period.
Apparently that's not good practice anymore. The line spacing you can
set up in the format protocol.

Hi,

OS Xubuntu 10.04; LO 3.4.5 directly installed from the LO website as
Ubuntu 10.04 still has 3.3.2.

Known issue with the 3.4.x series, especially on Ubuntu.

Hopefully somebody has succeeded in accessing the Thunderbird address
book or is this solved in 3.5?

Well it is supposed to be fixed in the future 3.5, at least in RC2 the
addressbook wizard works again, on all platforms as far as I can tell,
BUT, the mozab (mozilla address book support) doesn't seem to be able to
be built on Ubuntu at the moment, which means that unless the Ubuntu
people sort it out, the distrib versions still won't work with the TB
addressbook.

The wizard still doesn't work on
LibreOffice 3.5.0rc2
Build ID: e371a95-bf68a13-5a1aa2b-d3c1ae9-b938258
.deb from LO.

Alex and Gerry,
Thanks for clarifying the issue.
I will wait for the official 3.5 release and than try again. At the
moment I'm too busy to delve further in this problem but I need it
urgently in March as I have to do a mailing. If it's not solved, I will
import the Address Book in a spreadsheet after exporting it as a .csv file.

Thanks again for the clarification and the testing (Gerry).
Joep

Things change and then change back all the time. I have 3 college
degrees. The official proper use and look of foot notes changed 4 or
5 times between the first college degree, through the last and into my
work at a local school district. Other page formatting from margins,
notation, biography, and other parts of a written paper as the years
went by, swing from one extreme and back again. As for the 60 years ago
for double space issue, well I had to type up college papers [with a
Windows based computer in 2000 or 2001] and I was required to use 2
spaces between a period and the capital letter of the next line -
Required or it would loose me grade points. There was some papers that
required a full line spacing between text lines of the page, while
others used standard line spacing. For the foot notes, and other
things, I had to buy the currently used English writing text book used
in the first two semester courses for writing properly. I already had 3
others on the shelf and had to use the newest one. The book changed
since my 1st semester of the 3rd degree and the last semester of night
college courses [3+ years later taking only the courses needed to go
from the 2nd degree to the 3rd one].

So the long and short of it is, what is required for proper writing of
papers changes yearly, or every time English professionals get together
to review what concepts and requirements came out since the last
get-together.

Now that people use computers more than typewriters, the changes can
come faster as the influences are spread via the Net faster. Actually
my neighbor's kids were required to type of their 5-8 grade papers
before their parents could afford to buy one. IF it was not typed up
via a computer and a printed copy with a digital copy handed in, they
would fail the assignment. This was at a school where over a third of
the kids had no computer at home, but it was a requirement for the
district that their students had to have a computer at home to
write/print/save-to-disc their written assignments - since it was easier
and quicker to read than handwritten papers. I ended up having the
neighbor's kids come over and type on one of my machines in my home/office.

Hmmm, stange, because my own build does work, at least so far as the

Could you open a new bug report for this as it appears specific to
Moz/TB/SeaMonkey ?
