I have encountered similar problem with one certain PowerPoint file. It opened
fine on LibreOffice 3.6.4. You may consider upgrade as possible way of solving
this issue.

That worked! I updated to LO 3.6.4.3 and loaded both powerpoint files

Tom,
Thanks. That was what I was looking for.
Renaming the profile didn't help though. I think I found a couple of
Powerpoint files that LO can't handle. It is either a first for me, or
the files are corrupt. I contacted the source to see if something can
be done.

Thanks.

It's ~/.config/libreoffice/ (if you are using Linux, which probably you do - but
you could mention it in your message).

Oops! You are correct in both - sorry. I am running Linux.
I found the directory and renamed it, but it didn't solve my problem.

Try this:

Select the "Advanced Properties" tab.
Under "Name of the MySQL database", enter:

Then click OK.

You may have to close and reopen LO/Base for this to take effect. This

I had the same problem with zero dates and times when I read about this

Tom,
That does sound painful!
As a test, I was successful at Inserting a PDF as a Draw OLE object in a
Writer document. Here is what I did:

  1. Using the PDF importer, I opened the PDF file, which brings up Draw.
  2. While in Draw, I saved the PDF file as an ODF Draw file.
  3. I opened a new Writer document.
  4. Using Insert -> Object -> OLE Object -> LibreOffice 3.5 Drawing, I
got a Draw window embedded in the Writer document.
  5. Double-click on the Draw object window to bring up the draw OLE.
  6. Open the ODF file saved in step #2.
  7. Click outside the Draw OLE window (anywhere in the document but
the Draw OLE window) to get out of Draw.
  8. You should have the PDF image from step #1 now in Writer.

Note that the PDF importer does not seem to work if attempting to
directly open the PDF file in step #6. It seems to think it is opening
the PDF in Writer, not the Draw OLE window. There are many limitations
to the Draw OLE that the Draw program itself does not have.
You may have to do some scaling or dragging the Draw window tags around
to get the size you want. Note that the Object properties dialog has a
lot to do with formatting this object (right click on the Draw OLE ->
select Object).

Hope this helps.

In the last 6 months or so, I had the task of completing two PDF forms
that organizations sent me to fill out. I decided to try the LO PDF
import and use LO to fill out the forms. In both cases, PDF import
created a Draw file of pages conforming to each page of the PDF file.
With the first PDF form, I was not able to modify any text or objects in
the form. It was if the original format was a picture. However, I was
able to add text boxes over the "picture" and get the form filled out.
With the second PDF form, I was not only able to add text boxes as
before, but I was also able to edit the original form text! What was
different between the two PDFs? I haven't a clue.
So, it looks like PDF file editability in LO Draw depends on the
particular PDF you are trying to edit.

There are some interesting stats that are very well presented in there and it's worth using to spread the word of how LibreOffice works.

For me one of the key things that no article seems to mention is that while many hefty companies are vanishing seemingly overnight it seems somewhat dangerous to rely on just one. It would be like not making back-ups of critical information!! If we can bear to think of LO and AOO as being similar enough that users can migrate from one to the other fairly easily and thus as being 2 prioducts supported by 1 community then that community is massive. Taken as being 1 product it is so robust that even if 1 or 2 companoes the size of IBM or Google (or RedHat or SUSE) were to simply vanish overnight then there would still be a good product out there. By sticking with MS people are risking everything they have by being so heavily dependant on just 1 company and that company is losing market share to mobile devices. Perhaps Win8 might help them recover the OS battle but it might not.

Regards from

Greetings,
My primary goal is to reduce, or preferably eliminate, risk to my data.
I learned the hard way many years ago that depending on M$ and other
proprietary software suppliers was way too risky. I then decided to
switch to Open Source software and take back control of my computer. I
have never regretted that decision. Even if LO/AOO go away, there are
still other applications, such as Koffice, that will still allow me to
read/maintain my documents & data. And, if it comes down to it, I can
always unzip my LO/OO files and get the data from the file(s) inside.
That allows me to sleep at night.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Collate print option not working

2012-11-23 Thread Girvin R. Herr

Greetings,
I finally got time to work on this problem. As a result of some helpful
replies to my original posting, I have made some progress with this
subject problem and I am making this posting in case it may help others.

I changed my CUPS printer driver from the "HP Laserjet 8150 Series
Postscript (en)" to the "HP Laserjet 8150 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.2"
driver and now I can print the LO-generated PDF file of my 3-page
document in Adobe Acrobat reader 9 perfectly. Collation and number of
copies (2) are correct. Since Reader 9 now prints the correct number of
copies and collation, the problem is no longer the CUPS driver.

With that baseline said, LO printing now prints double the number of
copies (4 in this case of specifying 2), but the collation is now
correct (1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3). So, there still seems to be
something wrong with LO printing in this area. I just tried specifying
the number of copies at 3 and got 9 copies!! So this is not merely
doubling, it is squaring!! In deference to the forests of the world, I
am not going any higher in copies with this testing.

This problem is not a show-stopper for me. I have other ways to print
multiple copies. I just found this LO printing action as something
unexpected.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my original posting.

Since you run Linux, can you try creating a PDF file for your
document and then use the "default viewer" package for PDF to open
it. Then go to your printer's options and try to print 2 or 3 copies
of the document with the collate option.
Now that got interesting! I tried this using Adobe Acrobat Reader to
print the PDF file and although I selected 2 copies, collated, I got
one copy! I then tried 3 copies and still only got one copy.

What printer are your using? Which driver set?
Original-manufacture-style, CUPS-style or GhostScript-style? Manually
installed or did the Linux version find the printer driver and
installed it automatically?
I am using an HP Laserjet 8150DN, CUPS 1.3.11, on "AppSocket/HP
JetDirect" and the "HP Laserjet 8150 Series Postscript (en)" driver.
When I installed it, CUPS found the printer on my network
automagically with the "Find New Printers" option, but I continued to
install it manually using the CUPS "wizard". I did not opt for the
Foomatic or Gutenprint drivers, thinking they would not be needed,
since the printer has Postscript emulation, and a simple Postscript
driver should suffice. Now I may go back and rethink that decision.
I noticed there are two other drivers I may try: Foomatic and CUPS
Gutenprint v5.2.2.

Try the Export to PDF for one copy of the document and then try and
print the duplex and collated document that way. If it works, then
it is a LO printer option issue. If it does not work properly, then
it is a printer/driver issue. My Epson has a problem with LO and my
HP has a driver issue, the last time I tried it - which was a few
months back when I was still running Ubuntu 10.04.

Thanks for the help. You may be onto something with the driver. I
will try the other drivers and report back.

Just be aware of some EPS issue in LO (and AOO):

1. EPS images in LO will only show the 'image preview'. The thread from
this list is worth a read:
<http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/msg02032.html>

2. You will most likely experience serious scrolling issues in a
document with a large EPS. A simple example of this is:

<https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37837>
Download and try the attachment:
<https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=47445>
and you'll see what I mean. Open the TOP in a terminal & set to remain
on top. Open the attachment .odt and try to scroll to the bottom of page
2 (where the EPS is embedded). You'll see a significant delay & if you
watch TOP, you'll see that soffice first calls up gs (Ghost Script) &
then convert (ImageMagick), and then finally will display the image preview.

You can imagine what viewing the document will be like with multiple EPS
images...

NoOp,
I'll second that! That was exactly my experience with many EPS images
in a Writer document I was working on.
I had anecdotal evidence, but you state factual evidence (the links).

It seemed like the LO EPS renderer was inefficient or the file format
was inefficient and took a lot of system resources to render the

not help. I finally switched to Jpeg versions and as I replaced the EPS

Okay, I was incorrect. I thought I did open a PDF in Writer. But it
must have been Draw, not Writer. Sorry.
I just did some work on this problem and discovered a way to do it.
Here is what I did:

   In Writer,
   Insert -> Object -> OLE Object ->

In the dialog that comes up, Click on "Select..." to bring up the

Select the PDF file you want to insert.
   Click on "Open".
   Click on OK.

The PDF file should come up in Writer as an embedded Draw OLE object.
You will most likely have to adjust the frame margins on the page if you
want the PDF object to cover the full page. You may be able to edit the
PDF image by double clicking on the Draw window, which brings up Draw
with the image. I say "may", because from my experience, some PDFs
allow editing in Draw and some do not. I was not able to insert the PDF
file directly into the Writer document. If you open a PDF file, it will
come up in Draw and if the PDF has multiple pages, Draw will have
multiple pages, something like Impress. Someone else suggested copying
the image in Draw and pasting it into Writer, but when I tried that, it
did not work. If someone has done that successfully, I would like to
know how. Also, if the PDF is opened with Draw and saved as an odg
file, one would think the odg could be inserted into a Writer document,
but I was unsuccessful trying to do that. That said, there may still be
other ways to do this. With enough time, those ways may be discovered.

Hope this helps.

about this, since the concept of proprietary file types has never been
addressed by any government agency (it would be easy, for example, for the
USGovt to mandate that all files be maintained with the formatting in a

changes. One might lose the formats, but the file itself would have a

file formatting be subject to some sort of regulation (yes, they CAN do

Otherwise, we'll all lose a huge amount of information.
That's my opinion. YMMV

lines of data.

What I get now is alternating lines of 'Field Names' and one row of

How can I get back to my original layout??
I don't know how or why your report got changed, but you should be able
to drag the fields back to where you want them in the report editor. It
sounds like your field names are now located in the detail section
rather than the heading section. You don't say what version you
upgraded from, but lately, LO is bundling the Oracle Report Builder
extension, which may have changed something if you weren't using it
before the upgrade.

Second problem - I have a need to produce a file, with the data in the
format "Field_One|Field_Two". I was given the SQL Command of
"PrefFirstName" || '|' || "Email" but failed to make a note of how I
set this up in the Report.

(All I get now is a syntax error - whatever I try)

Have you looked at using the MySQL CONCAT_WS function in a query? This
function allows you to concatenate fields, and specify a field delimiter
string, into a single line of text. For example:

   CONCAT_WS('|',` Field_One`,`Field_Two`)

should result in the format you specified. In my case, I am using it in
a SELECT clause to format my supplier data inside a form listbox. It
displays the name, address, etc, separated by ' | ' strings so the
fields are not all run together. It isn't fixed columns, but it works
well enough for me.

Can someone please put me right!!

Thanks a lot

Since you run Linux, can you try creating a PDF file for your document
and then use the "default viewer" package for PDF to open it. Then go
to your printer's options and try to print 2 or 3 copies of the
document with the collate option.
Now that got interesting! I tried this using Adobe Acrobat Reader to
print the PDF file and although I selected 2 copies, collated, I got one
copy!

When I installed it, CUPS found the printer on my network automagically
with the "Find New Printers" option, but I continued to install it
manually using the CUPS "wizard". I did not opt for the Foomatic or
Gutenprint drivers, thinking they would not be needed, since the printer
has Postscript emulation, and a simple Postscript driver should
suffice. Now I may go back and rethink that decision. I noticed there
are two other drivers I may try: Foomatic and CUPS Gutenprint v5.2.2.

Try the Export to PDF for one copy of the document and then try and
print the duplex and collated document that way. If it works, then it
is a LO printer option issue. If it does not work properly, then it
is a printer/driver issue. My Epson has a problem with LO and my HP
has a driver issue, the last time I tried it - which was a few months
back when I was still running Ubuntu 10.04.

Thanks for the help. You may be onto something with the driver. I will
try the other drivers and report back.

Tom,
Actually, no, this is not the first time I have seen this behavior. I
rarely print multiple copies, but I have seen this happen before, within
about 6 months. That previous time, I was using LO 3.5.3.

Okay, this is really strange. I just tried it again and got
1,2,1,2,3,3! I might add that I am printing duplex, which may
complicate the LO algorithm. I tried another 3-page document and it
behaved the same way. I then expanded it to 4 pages and got
1,2,1,2,3,4,3,4. Where 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 are on the same sheets, just
opposite sides. Weird. I just tried doing the same thing with a Calc
spreadsheet and got the same results. So the problem is with LO, not
just Writer.

Ian,
Glad to hear you got it working.

For importing your data, you might check the mysqlimport command. I
used it a long time ago when I needed to get data from some MS Access
files. In Access, I was able to save the data as a CSV file and then
import the CSV file into my MySQL database tables. Here are two scripts
I used to perform that task:
This one I called msqnewimport which deletes any data in the table
before loading the CSV file

   #!/bin/sh
   # Import a ".csv" data file into a mysql table of the same name.
   # Original database data is deleted first. This creates new data.
   # Usage: msqnewimport <.csv>
   #
   mysqlimport --local --delete --fields-terminated-by=,
   --fields-enclosed-by='"' --lines-terminated-by='\r\n' \
   -p -u $1 $2

This one I called msqimport and it appends the CSV file data to the
existing data in the table.

   #!/bin/sh
   # Import a ".csv" data file into a mysql table of the same name.
   # Original database data is preserved. The new data is appended.
   # Usage: msqimport <.csv>
   #
   mysqlimport --local --fields-terminated-by=,
   --fields-enclosed-by='"' --lines-terminated-by='\r\n' \
   -p -u $1 $2

Replace with your MySQL user name.
For more information on mysqlimport, see the manpage.

You may be interested in the MySQL database backup process as well.
MySQL has a program, mysqldump, that writes an SQL file which can be
used to restore a database later. For example:

   mysqldump --user=root -p --opt > .sql

To restore, use:

   mysql --user=root -p < .sql

Note the "<" and ">" redirection characters. These programs use stdio
for output and input, respectively.

It has been my experience that recreating forms and reports is a time
consuming problem when changing database clients. I am very reluctant
to change a database client for this very reason. It has also been my
experience that for reports, Base's Oracle Report Builder (ORB) is
problematic. For small tables, ORB works fairly well and generates
reports at a reasonable speed. For large tables, however, it bogs
down. I have a table with over 5000 records and still growing. My
latest try with this table and LO 3.5.7/ORB 1.2.1 generated over 500
writer pages. That bogged ORB down, although it is working better with
LO 3.5.7 than LO 3.5.3. 3.5.3 was so slow as to be unusable. I have
even tried a 3rd party report builder called DataVision, which has its
own set of problems, is immature, and seemingly no longer active (last
release was in 2008). There are also proprietary (and not free) report
builders out there that are reported to be mature and work fine. (No pun
intended).

Hope this helps.
Girvin

I have created a SlackBuild script to repackage both LO and the

Re: [libreoffice-users] Connecting LO Base to an SQL DB

2012-11-03 Thread Girvin R. Herr

Ian,
It sounds like you are getting close, but there is still something
blocking your access to the MySQL server (mysqld). All of these
symptoms sure sound like the server is not looking at the localhost port.

Ian Whitfield wrote:

I do _NOT_ have this file in my system. I did a search and found this ...

# Shorewall version 4 - MySQL Macro
#

I am not familiar with your "Shorewall" system. I doubt this is
related. There are many distributions of Linux and each one has its own
way of configuring the processes. What I described is from Slackware
Linux. Your's must be different, but I included the Slackware files in
case they may point you in a good direction.

Here are some things to try:

  1. Look at "/etc/my.cfg", the mysqld configuration file. The mysqld
server reads this file for configuration information when it boots
up. If there is a "skip-networking" entry in there, comment it
out with a "#" in column 1. Then restart mysqld or reboot. If
you can't find the my.cfg file in /etc, then search for it
 elsewhere on your system.

  2. ping localhost
You should get responses. (Ctrl-c will stop ping.) If you get
something like "destination unreachable" or "unknown host", then
localhost is not configured on your system. That could hang up
Base. Linux installation should do this for you, but maybe your
distro does not. If it isn't there, you could add it to "/etc/hosts":

 127.0.0.1 localhost

Your system may need a reboot. You could try pinging localhost
again after you add it to /etc/hosts to determine if you need to
 reboot.

I highly recommend reading the Section "Post-Installation Setup and
Testing" in the MySQL Reference Manual. This document is a good source
for configuring and testing MySQL. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/

Started Base and selected my old DB to get to the Edit screen - BUT
when I go there "Connection Type" is grayed out!!
Tried again selecting the new SQL DB but again the "Connection Type"
is grayed out!!
I don't understand what you mean by "new SQL DB"? Did you try creating
a new Base database connection with the wizard?

Is edit -> database -> Properties grayed out too?
You can set up the connection host and port in edit -> database ->
Properties -> Additional Settings.

   Host name should be localhost.
   Port number should be 3306
MySQL JDBC driver class should be com.mysql.jdbc.Driver if you are
   using JDBC.

For reference, I am using mysql-connector-java-5.0.7 with MySQL 5.0.67
and LO 3.5.3 . Not the latest, but it works.
Under edit -> database -> Properties -> "Advanced Properties", you can
set up the database name and authentication:

"Name of the MySQL database" is the name of the database you used in
   the CREATE DATABASE mysql statement.
"User name" is the user name you used in the GRANT statement
"Password required" should be checked if you set up a password in
   the GRANT statement.

If you made any changes from the above suggestions, can you now go
through the Base database installation again without any problems?
Carried on with the Base page and put in all the details - 'Test
Class' gives me "Succesful"

But 'Test Connection' still gives me the "Communication Failure"!!

This sounds like Base still can't talk to the server through localhost.
The var/lib/mysql Folder is there but is EMPTY(??)! (and has no
permissions) and I can not delete it.
Are you looking at /var/lib/mysql as "root"? If not, it will look
empty and if you try to enter the directory, err, folder, you should get
a permission error if not root. There should at least be entries in the
log from your use of mysql-secure-installation and mysql_install_db.
Oops! I don't think I told you about "mysql_install_db"? If not,
that's my bad. I am sorry I left it out. That needs to be run before
anything else, including the mysqld server. Here is the correct
sequence of configuration:

   (set up my.cfg)
   mysql_install_db --user=mysql #creates the databsae structures.
   mysqld_safe --user=mysql & #script to run the mysqld server.
   NOTE: sometimes called safe_mysqld
   mysql_secure_installation #removes insecure
   files/structures.
mysql --user=root -p mysql #Allows you to create your
   databases, user names, permissions, etc.
   (set up Base)

This is documented in the Section "Post-Installation Setup and Testing"
in the MySQL Reference Manual.
After running this sequence, the /var/lib/mysql directory should contain
your database files, the error log, and other mysql internal files.
Since these are sensitive files, only root can see/access them.

I know this is a lot to take in, but not being at your system means I
have to throw out a lot of possibilities and suggestions.
Installing MySQL and getting Base working with it is not trivial, as you
have seen. As far as I know, there is no one document to describe the

Ian,
If mysqld starts automatically at boot, then, like my Slackware system,
you probably have a system script somewhere that starts mysqld. The
--skip-networking may be in that script. In Slackware, it is
"/etc/rc.d/rc.mysql" which has a macro definition in the beginning:
"SKIP=--skip-networking". Simply commenting that line out with a # in
column one enables network (localhost) access. You might check for
something like that on your system.

In case it will help, here are the commands I use to configure MySQL and
create my databases:

   *

Before first MySQL use, at the shell enter:
"mysql_secure_installation" to set the root password, remove the
"test" database, and remove network root access. This program will
prompt for these items. Note that removing network root access

These installation & setup instructions are in the MySQL Reference
Manual on the MySQL website or in the documentation directory of your
computer (should be installed when MySQL is installed).

You should then do the following tests:
Assuming LO Base is already setup, in Base drill down as:

Edit -> Database -> Connection Type -> Next -> Test Connection
   (enter your password when asked)

You should get the message: "...connection was established successfully"

Then continue:

OK -> Next -> Test Class

You should get the message: "JDBC driver loaded successfully"
(This assumes you are using JDBC)

If either of these tests do not work, then there is still something
wrong in your configuration.
If the first test fails, then the problem may be the --skip-networking
issue.
If the first test is okay but the second test fails, then it is most
likely your JDBC driver configuration.

You might also check the MySQL error log in
"/var/lib/mysql/.err". You might find something useful there.
Also, verify "/var/lib/mysql" has owner and group settings of
"mysql:mysql", although if you can access your database with the mysql
or myadmin program, this is probably okay. If you used
mysql_secure_installation, then this should have been set up properly by
mysql_secure_installation. You can start fresh with this by renaming or
deleting the "/var/lib/mysql" directory.

Of course, all of this assumes you have root access on your computer.
Note that MySQL root is different from system root, and they _should_
_not_ share passwords!

Hope this helps.

Well I even went off this morning looking at 'other' solutions for
this and it seems to be - Use Base or go and learn PHP or Ruby or
something like that!!

So I got into Base again and found an interesting fact - Base had
_NOT_ stored the link in it's Driver Class!! After a couple of
re-tries it now seems to have done that and I can now get past the
'Test Class' stage OK!!!

The next screen is 'Authentication' - I enter the User Name and select
"Test Connection" and I get

   Communication Link Failure
The last packet sent successfully to the Server was 0 milliseconds
ago.

The driver has not received any packets from the Server.

OK - Now I'm stuck again.. My Database (Schema) was called
'federals_Members.sql' when I first created it but last week I had to
re-install my OpSys and to get it back into MyAdmin I had to import it
and it's now there called 'Test'!! Neither of the above two file names
make any difference to the error message.

Next the User Name - In My Admin it is 'root', when I set-up the
Database I used 'Ianw' and my System login is 'Ianw' also. Again
neither of these changes the error message.

To check I started MyAdmin and it connects fine with the Database and
displays the table structure just fine.

So why wont Base connect to it???

Thanks

IanW

Ian,
Are you starting mysqld with "--skip-networking"?
If so, then remove it for "localhost" access. LO Base uses localhost to
access mysqld and will give a failed to connect error if it can't
connect via localhost. MyAdmin does not use localhost to connect, so it
would work fine while Base will not.

Hope this helps.

When I last used it, the "Date (Fixed)" inserted the date on the day its set
up and does not update the date. If you select "Date" it changes the date
everytime the document is opened, also changes it when person recieving the
document recieves it, I'm told.

I send out a newletter each month and the date is changed each time I update
it before I send it and then when it goes out.

upscope,
Yes, this is true. That is why I personally don't use "Date" as opposed
to "Date (Fixed)" on my documents. If the document is a one-time simple
document, such as a letter where the date is used once and not
throughout a multi-page document, I usually just type the date in and
edit it each time I revise the document. That way it doesn't
unexpectedly change on me. Using the auto change date form caused me
headaches in this respect.

Another option I use is the document properties feature. I create a
custom version date property

   File -> Properties
   "Custom Properties" tab

and then insert that property as a field.

   Insert -> Fields -> Other
   "DocInformation" tab
   "Custom" type

Then I only need to change the one property to change any and all
instances in the document. Works for me. It also works in headers and
footers.

While verifying this just now, I noticed some other fields in the
Docinformation" tab I will have to investigate: "Last Printed" and
"Modified" may be of interest to this thread.

Hope this helps.

David Smith wrote:

I've got a problem. I'm trying to test some different table designs.
Whenever I create a table without a primary key, I find that I cannot
go back and add a primary key later. When I first save the table,
Libreoffice asks me if I want to create a primary key now. I choose
"no" because I'm experimenting with some different table designs and
didn't want to commit to anything just yet.
1. Create table without primary key.
2. Save table.
3. Libreoffice asks if I want to create a primary key now.
4. I choose no.
5. I later then open the table and set the primary key.
6. I save the table.
7. I open the table again and the primary key that I chose was not saved!

I've never had this kind of problem with a database before. Is this a
bug or a missing feature?

David,
I am using the MySQL server for my database and have seen similar
problems. I recently created a new table, selected the key, but forgot
to set the "Autoincrement" attribute on the key before my first save of
the table structure. I tried several things, such as moving the key to
a temporary field, but nothing allowed me to make the original key field
autoincrement. Every time I saved the table, the autoincrement
selection on the key would revert to "No". Since this was a new table
and no data was in it yet, I ended up deleting the table and recreating
it with the autoincrement set on the key before I first saved it. I had
similar things happen to me with table structure key definitions
before. Once, I had to use the MySQL Monitor program and some SQL
statements to change key definitions on existing database tables. Not
fun and error prone, but it worked. The odd thing is that there is no
error message from the server when these things happen, which makes me
suspicious of Base or the JDBC driver - even more so since you are using
a different server. The bottom line is that as far as Base table keys
go, you must set them up properly before you do that first save of the
new table structure. In my experience, non-key fields may be changed or
added after the first save. The key field is special.

Hope this helps.

Curious, I tried "=TODAY()" as a field variable formula and it doesn't

One solution would be to make a complete copy of the database, but as I
want to make copies of the main table many times a day that would be a
laborious solution

It is easy to make a duplicate of the main table within the database, and
also easy to make a copy of the form in the base file, but what I need to
do now is point the copy of the form at the copy of the table.

I thought it might be possible to open the odb file as a zip file and find
the form data containing the table name somewhere in it, and edit it to the
copy table name, but I haven't succeeded yet.

Does anybody know if this is possible - or even if there is a much easier
way?

John,
I am assuming you need to change the table that your form points to.
You can do this by:

  1. Bring up your form in edit mode (right click on form name and
 select "Edit".)
  2. Select the "Form Properties" window (this is the icon that looks
like a window with 2 buttons with an arrow pointing to it, and
with a help balloon that says "Form".
  3. In the popup window, select the "Data" tab.
  4. Change the "Content" box to the table you want to use from the list.

If the new table's column (control) names are different, you will have
to change those too in the form editor. You do that by
Ctrl-left-clicking on the form's control box and selecting its "Data"
tab and selecting the new name from the list derived from your new
table. Do that for each control that has a different name from your old
table.

Hope this helps.

Greetings,
This thread has been ongoing for a relatively long time now and IMHO it
has forked many times and veared off of its original message: that MS
was to start renting their software and the lock on users that that
implies. Well, as we have been debating all these forked threads, there
are other mainstream software suppliers that have also signed on to the
software rental business model. Although this is not directly
competitive with LO, it is related to the subject and may interest
office suite users. I see today in our local big-box office supplies
outlet advertisement that Adobe is now renting their mainstream software
such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Dreamweaver and Adobe Create Cloud. They
call it a "subscription", but it looks like rental to me. On one
listing for example, the "subscription" for Adobe Photoshop is listed at
$59.99 (US) and the rental period is only 3 months! I don't know what
Photoshop is selling for since I don't use it, but that seems expensive
to me. Maybe I am just cheap or unrealistic in today's market. In all
cases, I am *never* going to put my data at the mercy of a corporation -
whether it be "the cloud" or limited-usage rented maintenance tools. I
still have the scars from doing that in the past.

I'm getting off my soapbox now...

Jay,
Yes, I can agree to that. Working with databases is not plug-n-play.
It doesn't help when there are strangenesses in SQL that I don't
understand the reason why they are there. For example, a while back I
ran into a Join problem with at least MySQL joins that if any joined
field of a record is null, the join will fail and that record, even
though the other fields are valid, will not be in the result set. No
warnings or errors are given - it is just missing. That causes missing
data, which IMHO is a bad thing. As I said, I am not an SQL expert and
maybe there is a way around that action, but I could not find a way by
trial and error. I had to go back into all of my records and make sure
I had a default value in all the fields that were part of any join.

It is my understanding that an expanded version of the Base manual is
coming out soon. That will be a help too. With the exception of the
Report Builder, Base works quite well as far as I use it, but the
documentation is sparse and there is a lot of trial and error involved
to get what I want. I am looking forward to the new version.

Of course, it is not within the scope of a Base manual to teach SQL, but
since Base relies heavily on SQL and some Base functions require some
SQL writing, some simple examples of how to use those Base features
would be appreciated by all users. There are some examples in the
manuals already, but it could use some expansion. Otherwise, the Base
user base will continue to be minimal. Users need help to understand
the concepts and make Base usable for them and their projects.
Otherwise, they will continue to use Calc. I am sure the frustration
level can be high for newbies and many would give up on Base, even
though it would be the correct tool for them to use. I might have done
so too, if it were not that I have a lot invested in my databases and I
am now "locked in" to maintaining them.

Another good idea might be to add to the manual a "Further Reference"
list of recommended books to read for more information. I would start a
MySQL list with the "MySQL Reference Manual", which comes with most
MySQL packages and is on the MySQL website and is available in paper
from O'Reilly Community Press. That should be mandatory reading for all
new MySQL users. Also, I have found the "Teach Yourself SQL in 24
Hours" book by Ryan Stephens and Ron Plew of value. (I have no
affiliation with either of these authors or publishers.)

and thus do not learn how to use any database. Compounding this is the
fact many MSO packages do not include Access. Many thus use a
spreadsheet as a poor man's substitute for a proper database.

Jay,
I use Base as a MySQL client to access my databases, which are mostly
inventories. I started with MS Access years ago and switched to MySQL
c. 2004, when a MySQL Open Source client (Rekall) finally appeared for
Linux. But Rekall stopped being supported a few years later and the
version I had still had a few bugs that should have been worked on.
When Base started being a general database server client (interfaced to
MySQL, etc.) rather than that proprietary database thing that StarOffice
used (and may still do so), I looked into switching from Rekall to
Base. Doing so was not a trivial task, since all the work I had done on
data entry forms and reports in Rekall had to be discarded and that work
redone for Base. After recreating all my data entry forms and reports,
I got Base to work reasonably well within my requirements. However, the
latest version (1.2.1) of Oracle Report Builder (ORB) is a basket case.
When it doesn't crash LO, it is dog slow at creating my reports. Too
slow to be used. I have just this week, downloaded an Open Source
report generator program called DataVision
http://datavision.sourceforge.net/ and got it to work on my Slackware
Linux system with MySQL. This version, 1.2.0, is rough, many features
are not working yet and it does not seem to be supported any more
either, since this latest version is dated 2008. However, unlike ORB,
it does do what I want a report generator to do - without crashing and
at a reasonably fast speed. Since it is an Open Source JAVA program
using an Apache license, if any of the Base devs are listening, I
suggest they look into taking over DataVision as an addition to Base.
Base without a report generator is like a computer program that accepts
inputs but does not output anything - useless. Akin to Writer or Calc
not printing!

Was all my database work, including learning a bit of SQL "daunting"?
Yes, I suppose it was, but it was and is a learning experience and I
don't mind learning something new. I am not in the least a SQL master,
but I do understand it enough to get by. If not, I hit the books
again. There are those who can't or won't learn anything new. For
them, there is the Calc tool, which fits their hands better, but maybe
isn't quite the best tool for the job.

Alex

Alex,
This may not help nor apply to your particular problem, but it may help
point you to the problem.
I am working on with program called DataVision as a replacement for the
broken Base report builder. Reading your message reminded me of seeing
something about column naming in the DataVision manual. Here is a
snippet (my comments in <>).
start
snippet

   Database Name Case Sensitivity
Some databases support case-sensitive names. In those databases, the
column named "mycol" is different from the column named "MyCol".
Unfortunately, the programs that access databases, such as JDBC
drivers and command line tools like PostgreSQL's psql, often confuse
the issue by changing all names to lower case or upper case
internally, before sending the query to the database. When you type
"select MyCol from MyTable", it sends "select mycol from mytable" to
   the database .
If your database was created using names with only lower case (or
upper case) letters, you may not see any problem. Your queries
always work because no matter what case you use, the names are
converted to all lower case (or upper case) and everything is fine.
In order to access a column named "MyCol" using a tool that converts
the names, you have to quote the mixed-case names. For example, the
query "select MyCol from MyTable" must be entered as

   select "MyCol" from "MyTable"

The quotes go around the parts of the name that need them, not the
whole name . For example, the quotes don't go around
the entire name "MyTable.MyCol". Instead, you would need to type

   select "MyTable"."MyCol"

End snippet
-

The manual then goes on to talk about DataVision-specific things.
So, your problem may not be Base, but your JDBC driver. Then again,
maybe a change in Base has broken this communication to your JDBC
driver. That would take more investigation. If, however, you are
writing your own SQL, then you may check for this quoting requirement.

layers" in the Draw guide [1], and therein the section "Changing the
layer of a drawing object".
I read that section of Chapter 8 last night, just to see if the guide
did explain layers. There are two pages referring to layers and that is
mostly taken up by figures. I will have to work with Draw to get the
feel of how to apply this new layer technique.

I know the guide is not verbose, so don't hesitate to ask again, but
please on the list, so that all others can learn from the answers too.

Done!

[libreoffice-users] Draw object selection problem

2012-09-14 Thread Girvin R. Herr

Greetings,
LO 3.5.3.2 on Linux.

I am trying to edit a Jpeg picture in Draw by drawing objects on top of
the picture. However, I am having a problem selecting my objects. Draw
keeps selecting the larger underlaying picture instead of the object I
want it to select. I tried to select an area, but as soon as I make the
first click at the first corner, it selects the underlying picture. I
tried protecting the underlying picture using the procedure in help.
That keeps the picture from being modified, but it still gets selected.
I "Sent it to Back", but that does not work either. Is there a way to
keep a draw object from being selected or to select overlying objects only?

Thanks.

You might find that you actually have to save the ODB file, shut down LO
and restart it completely (including any quickstarter if you are on
Windows). The refresh button doesn't seem to perpertuate the refreshed
table schema to the ODB configuration file, which is why you then get an
error.

That is good to know. I will have to check that out, since it is a new
day/boot here - Nope! Everything for the table is still blank, but I no
longer get the error popups when I try to "open" a table. I guess
that's progress.

Additionally, LO only supports DBF from dbf III+ and dbf IV from what I
recall, but Andreas might know more about that than I do, so if your
DBFs use an earlier version, then they probably won't be recognised by LO.

Alex

Ahh! Now that is what I am thinking.
I did some further research on dBASE file formats since my last posting
and yes, the file formats changed considerably since my dBASE II files
were created - Especially between dBASE II and III. I have now given up
using Base to read these old files. The good thing is that, as a result
of my further research, I now know the file format and I have begun
writing a program to read these DBF files and write their data out to a
new Comma Separated Value (CSV) file, which can be read by many
programs, including Calc. What I didn't mention in my posting is that I
also have dBASE II command files (.CMD) which manipulate the data in
these DBF files. If LO can't read the old DBF files, I have no hope of
LO actually executing the .CMD programs as dBASE II did. At least now I
know some of LO's limitations with dBASE files.

Thanks again for the help.

Base is a mere database frontend. It opens its own .odb files only. An
.odb file can be connected to various types of databases.

Open Writer or Calc.
Hit F4.
Right-click "Bibliography" -> Edit Database
This loads the .odb file which is connected to the dBase Bibliography
with one table named "biblio".
dBase is a database in a directory, so this .odb file is connected to
a directory. The status bar of that database reads: "dBase" and the
path to the connected directory having the file biblio.dbf.

menu:Edit>Database lets you modify the connection parameters.

Yes, this works as you describe it.

Put your own dBase in a dedicated directory.
File>New>Database...
[X] Connect to existing db
Type: dBase
Specify the directory.
Check the register option (never harms).
Save the database.

So far - so good. That's what I have done.

Drag the table icons from this database into the embedded HSQLDB.

How do I drag it into HSQLDB?
Warning: embedded HSQLDB must not be used with anything important.
It's OK for educational demos and for your DVD. Base works best (fast,
reliably and multi-user) with HSQL as stand-alone backend database.
Embedded databases are just a caricature of a database. They are slow,
single-user, limited and unsafe.
That may be true, but all I am trying to do is extract the dBASE file
data so I can put it somewhere useful. I don't intend to continue using
HSQLDB once it has extracted my data.

I did discover that LO requires the dBASE filename to end in ".dbf", not
".DBF" as I started with. So, LO is case sensitive in this instance.

I started to look at the Base options and discovered View -> Refresh
Tables. Clicking on it produces my dBASE database namess in the Tables
section. I looked up "refresh tables" in help, but all it says is
"Refreshes the tables". Duh! However, editing the table produces a
blank page with no structure entries. Opening the table produces the
SQL errors: "The data content can not be loaded. The query can not be
executed. It contains no valid table.". If I click on "More", I get the
errors: "The data content could not be loaded.", "SQL Status: HY000 The
query can not be executed. It contains no valid table." and the
information: "The SQL command leading to this error is: SELECT * FROM
"pintosw"" (where "pintosw" is my dBASE database file "pintosw.dbf").

Now that I have the "tables", how do I drag them to HSQLDB?
Maybe that is the key.

It seems to me that Base is attempting to create the new database, but
it isn't importing the table structure or data from the dBASE file.

Thanks for any help.
Girvin

- LO no longer has any actively supported native mysql connector either,

- LO has read/write native connector support for postgresql - this, I
believe, is a major improvement over AOOo, which only had read support,
and the postgres native connector is no longer even offered with AOOo
due to licensing issues ;

- both AOOo and LO support JDBC driver connections to postgresql and
mysql databases ;

- both AOOo and LO are supposed to support ODBC driver connections -
however, this is very dependent on OS, bit version architecture (32/64)
and buggy behaviours of the 3rd party drivers ;

- LO support of MS Access databases on Windows is variable according to
LO version and Access mdb/accdb version - one day it works with one
version of LO, the next it doesn't, so your mileage may vary - I can't
speak for AOOo here as I haven't tested that bit ;

- Access databases are not supported in either LO or AOOo on other OSes
(i.e. Linux/Mac), to my knowledge - these are usually dealt with by 3rd
party programs.

This is only a short comparison, I'm sure there are other points that
could be mentioned, but on the whole, the basic DB functionality between
the two is pretty much the same. That situation is likely to change with
the switch to LO version 4 development, where it has already been
decided that backwards version (ABI) compatibility for all
functionalities of the LO suite will not be guaranteed. At the moment, I
have no idea how that will affect Base, but it will almost certainly
affect any extensions that are currently available.

Alex

Alexander,
Thanks for this information. It is very enlightening, so I shouldn't be
too surprised in the future. I use Base extensively as a client to MySQL.

Hello,

this is to inform you that the reply settings on this list have changed

So far, e-mails had set a reply-to the mailing list address. In other
words, with any e-mail client, replies to e-mails on the list were
automatically sent directly to the list.

In the past, this lead to two major problems:

1. Several times, people have sent direct replies to the public list,
where deleting them is nearly impossible. I remember at least one case
where confidential information has been sent out that caused lots of
worries for the sender and his employer. This happened because people
hit "reply" and thought it would reply to the sender only.

2. I have heard complaints in the past from people, stating that
working

with the non-developer lists of LibreOffice is a pain for them, because
of reply-to mangling, resulting in a lack of communication. This also
led to the fact that numerous tasks were done by the same people, who
needed to spend more and more time, instead of sharing the work burden
with others. While I do not fully believe this argument, there's just
one way to find out...

Therefore, I have applied a change:

Replies to e-mails from the list now only go to the original sender.
You
either need to use the "reply to all" feature of your e-mail
program, or

- preferably - the "reply to list"/"reply to group" feature, which will
direct replies directly to the list.

This is common practice on most mailing lists, and even the default
setting for our mailing list software, so we did not re-invent the
wheel

here. Those seeking for details should have a look at
http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html

I know we had numerous discussions on this topic in the past, but the
outcome was that roughly 50% were for this change, and 50% refused it,
so I am really sitting between two chairs here, for which I beg for
your
understanding. On the one hand, those complaining the lists are
unusable

with reply-to mangling, on the other hand, those complaining the lists
are unusable without reply-to mangling. Unfortunately, combining those
two, even on a per-recipient basis, is not possible, so they are
mutually exclusive to each other.

In order to find out the real impact, I simply changed the setting, and
again, I beg for your understanding.

Do not worry: The mailing lists are for the community, so it's the
community deciding how they should work. What I'd like to ask all of
you

is to try out for a few days if that change is good for each list or
not. Should we find out it is more harmful than it helps, I will
immediately switch back to the old behaviour.

Sorry for this short notice, and I beg for your understanding that I'm
somehow sitting between two chairs here.

Hey All,

Not trying to be rude. All of you should be smart enough to run an
email tool. After all you're all Linux users who administer at least
one Linux installation.

For those of you having trouble with email filters try filtering on
"libreoffice-users" in the subject line. That should get all your
email to the right folder.

I filter on email address.

LibreO - Website folder gets
LibreO - Projects Global folder gets
LibreO - Marketing US folder gets
LibreO - Marketing Global folder gets
LibreO - Users Global folder gets

So each list goes into its own folder in Thunderbird.

I also have different folders for newsletters, friends, family,
organizations I deal with, domain related, purchases via Amazon and
PayPal accounts, etc., etc.. All of these folders are based on email
address filtering and not subject line filtering. So, once I get an
email from a "proper source", then I get to decide which folder that
email address will go into. Subject lines and other filtering methods
do not work as well for me. Every email that gets left in the general
"inbox", that I am sharing with 12 email addresses I check with
Thunderbird, could be potential SPAM or missed valid emails from known
people. Some of the emails I receive that come from addresses that
are automatically forwarded to my TRASH folder without me ever seeing
any emails from those "known" SPAM sites/addresses. 95% of the all
the daily emails I receive will go into a folder instead of the
"default inbox". Most of those that come into that inbox are from
people or companies I have not received from before. So, I get only a
few "unknown" emails to go through myself. Works for me.

Webmaster...,
That's sort of what I do. I think I discovered the secret. In this
group now, it appears when someone "Reply-All"s to a posting, The "To:"
comes from the "From:" posting header entry, which is the poster's
address and not practical to filter on in this case. However, the group

Re: [libreoffice-users] Reply settings on this list have changed

2012-08-13 Thread Girvin R. Herr

Greetings,
I hope this gets to the right place. I used "Reply All" in
Thunderbird. The header looks correct, but people are going to get
duplicate messages.

Here is another side-effect of this change:
Florian,
Right! Yesterday, your changes broke my email filter which puts
libreoffice user group messages in a specific folder. But then I changed
the filter from looking at "Reply-To:" to "To:" and thought that would
suffice. Now, this morning I got 7 libreoffice messages in my correct
folder via my filter change, and 4 messages direct from members in my
main inbox, which my filter did not catch. Your change may make it easy
for you, but it is a nightmare for me. There is no way I can create
filters for all users who use their address.

My vote is to return the list to the way it behaved before you made this
change. This is "Anne-ology"'s Poll option #1.

I might also add, that the mis-addressed private message issue did
happen to me many years ago, when I sent what I thought was a private
joke message and discovered to my chagrin after sending it, that
Netscape also added a newsgroup address to the header without my
blessing. You can imagine the impact of that. It was not funny and I
am still, after over 20 years, seeing that association come up now and
then. Since then, I verify where my email client is sending my messages
before sending them. Anyone who does not do so, is taking a chance and
should not persecute others for their mistakes.

symbolic name, I would need to know where it is in the document to
change it, which I don't know.

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] stubborn macro security

2012-06-29 Thread Girvin R. Herr

Greetings,
I am trying to run the macro from the LibreOffice 3.4 Writer Guide, page
293, "Note: To re-enable updating from a template:". However, every
time I try to run it, I get a security message saying I can't do that.
I even used the Tools -> Options -> Security -> Macro Security... -> Low
(not recommended) to try to unlock this, to no avail.

What is the secret to allowing local macros to execute?

If any of the developers are listening, IMHO this is something that
should be done other than requiring the user to write and execute a
macro. There should be a radio button in Writer, possibly in document
properties, to re-enable updating from a template without going through
this complex process.

Thanks in advance.

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice crashes after updating template

2012-06-28 Thread Girvin R. Herr

Greetings,
I see that LibreOffice 3.5.3 still has the document template update
crash problem that OpenOffice 3.3 had. Here is the scenario:
I open a document and get the popup window (LibreOffice 3.4 Writer Guide
p293, Figure 294, "Updating a document from a changed template") asking
to update or keep the document template. If I then select "Update
Styles", LibreOffice will crash. It usually does not happen
immediately, but it will crash sometime during the session. Note that
if I optionally select "Keep Old Styles" LibreOffice will not crash.

The workaround I have developed is to immediately save and close the
updated document after the template update, then re-open the document.
That sequence seems to prevent the crash. Has anyone else seen this and
have a fix or is this a known problem that hasn't gotten fixed yet?

Re: [libreoffice-users] last edit position

2012-06-18 Thread Girvin R. Herr

Thomas,
You could do what I do in plain text editors when editing software
source files. I insert a string of "at" signs: "" where I want a
"tag". I then can do a search for "" and go to where I want.
Multiple numbers of "at" signs or different strings can allow multiple
"tags" to search for. This is not the single-key function you would
prefer, but it does work and is not very complex.

I maintain documents larger than 60 pages and I generally use the
vertical scroll bar while looking at paragraph numbers or the page
number in the bottom status bar zooming by. I may have to scroll back
and forth a bit to home in to the area I want, but this process is
reasonably fast to me.

You probably already know that LO will open a file and place the cursor
where it last was when the file was saved.

Hope this helps.

I believe this and/or similar questions have been asked before:
http://ask.libreoffice.org/question/1144/cursor-position-not-saved-in-writer#1147

But this does not work.
I do have my personal data entered under Tools and yet the software
ALWAYS opens the document at the top.
Once I am working in the document, there is the "Navigator", but despite
of having all sorts of items/functions,
there is NONE, that would bring me back to the last position the cursor
was, when I was last editing the document.

Right now I am working on a 60-page document and it is really a nuisance
having to scroll (one way or other) through
dozens of pages to get back to that last editing position, once I left
it for whatever reasons.

In the past I used WordPerfect (not any more). This had a very
convenient function called "quick mark".
Every time you save the document (Ctrl+S), the software automatically
enters a mark and you can jump to that position
from whereever you are with a keyboard shortcut.

Although under Tools -> Customize -> Keyboard -> Navigate
there are millions of things you can choose to go to, but nowhere
something like "last (edit) position".
You CAN insert a bookmark and then jump to that bookmark, but to my mind
this is a rather clumsy way of
achieving what was so elegant in Wordperfect.

Is there a trick to it?
Something that would make this action quick and easy (preferrably
automatic)?

Thank you.

Alex,
Thanks for replying with this valuable information. I printed the
document and I will try it sometime. It is always good to have a backup
solution.
I don't think my problem is with Java. The main reason is that I am
using the same database query to get my data with Oracle Report Builder
(ORB) and with Calc import. The Calc import runs at a reasonable speed,
about 15 seconds or less for about 1800 records, where ORB takes over an
hour to process the same data. I think the problem is definitely with
the ORB interfaces. Yesterday, under this subject, I posted additional
LO/ORB error data from tests I ran. Today, I want to go back to
OpenOffice 3.3 and run the same tests to see if OOo/ORB produces the
same errors and runs slow. I have used ORB with OOo 3.3 in the past
and, as I remember it, although it wasn't fast, it didn't take nearly as
long as this LO/ORB takes. If the OOo 3.3 tests are not as slow, then
that indicates there may be something wrong with the ORB bundled with
LO. I will have to do more work in that area to try to narrow it down.

Thanks again for your help.

Well, yes. But I remember the wise words of Adam Osborne, the
entrepreneur who made the Osborne computer back in the 80s: "He, who
lives on the cutting edge of technology, gets sliced to bits!"

I also am a firm believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
Then there is "Never use a software program that has a version ending in
zero!" That one has bitten me many times, such as OpenOffice 3.3.0 -
very buggy. Now here we are with LO 3.5.3.2 (no zero) and it seems to
work fine, other than the Oracle Report Builder extension, which is
version 1.2.0 (zero again).

Usually, the only reason I update something is that something else
requires the update and that something else has a compelling reason to
need it. Or, as you say, it is a security bug fix.

Take care.

Of course we will soon probably have to upgrade or patch due to some new and 'unforeseen' security flaw in java. Some other programs almost never have security issues at all and only upgrade to add new features but with java it's just to fix whatever they broke or didn't fix last time.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Extremely Slow Base Report Builder

2012-05-26 Thread Girvin R. Herr

Tom,
No, I did not compile from source. I just repackaged the RPM binaries
into the Slackware package format for installation.

I assume you are talking about Patrick Volkerding, the Slackware guru.
I am not sure what his position is with the Slackware organization. He
was very sick a few years ago and he may be cutting back. Slackware is
still not bundling *Office in their Linux distros. It is a long story,
but I am not using the latest and greatest Slackware, so I am pretty
much on my own for the latest packages. That is why I package my own
Slackware packages. Besides, it takes hours to compile OOo/LO. I would
rather just re-package the binaries. I might note that I have done so
for many years, since about OOo 2.4, without any known problems with the
binaries - until AOO 3.4.0.

As far as compiling from Source goes, I tried that with OOo (AOO?) 3.4.0
and it was a disaster. Apache has dependency requirements that are,
again, too new for my older versions. They even tossed GNU make for yet
another make: "dmake", which looks like another PHD thesis result - not
a major improvement on GNU make. For instance, they now require a newer
glibc than I have. Since just about every piece of Linux software
depends on glibc, the core library, I was not willing to bring my system
down when something went wrong with the new glibc interface, just to be
able to update AOO. That was the main reason I switched to LO. This
latest version of LO (3.5.3.2) still runs with my older glibc. IMHO,
that was a smart move on the Document Foundation's part. I could go on
and on, but I digress.

Thanks for the help.
Girvin

Hi Tom

Really - you seem to know a lot, are you writing a manual?

@Girvin - there is no place that I've seen the report builder be that
slow and not have an installation problem - not saying it is impossible
but sounds really odd. 1500 records in a tabular report, 49 seconds is a
long time for that actually. There is one exception to that, graphics -
is your report including graphics stored in data fields?

On the other hand Calc, as has been pointed out, might be your preferred
path.

Hello Drew,
I understand what you are saying, but I installed the LO 3.5.2 binary (RPM)
packages from the LO website. I repackaged them for Slackware, but that does
not change the 1s and 0s, just unpacks the RPMs and re-packages the files into
a Slackware package for installation. Therefore, if there is an installation
problem, it seems to be in the LO packages. Note that I am using the Report
Builder bundled into LO, not the version from the extensions website. I do
believe the newest is 1.2.1 rev 2, and the one in LO is still 1.0-something. I
have not tried to replace the bundled version with the 1.2 version.

I could live with 49 _"seconds"_. However, it is taking 49 _minutes_ for my
report. My database is nothing special, just text and integer values. Nine elements
plus the key per record. No graphics. So, yes, this problem does sound unusual.
However, I have not been able to pin down the problem yet. In the meantime, I am looking
into using Calc to print my data. It looks good and will do until I can get RB working.

BTW: The report is a simple text page header, Detail, and page footer, no
graphics there either. I do have the date and time fields in the header, but
that shouldn't bring it down. Actually, I do have some separator lines
inserted at the bottom of the header and the bottom of each Detail line. Page
number at the bottom of the footer. That's it.
Thanks for the help.

Hi Girvin

Sounds like it aught to run lickity-split...hmm

Anyway - looks like you are off to use Cacl.

You might want to do this.

When you open the data window under Calc, instead of copy/paste from the
data grid - grad, drag and drop the actual query name from the left side
of the data window. This will create a named range, you can set options
on the range to _not_ save the data in the spreadsheet, jut the
connection information...then when you open the spreadsheet again it
will re-run the query and update the data anew..

the OP tried ODBC?

//drew

Drew,
I am the OP.
No, I have not tried ODBC. The only configuration documentation I have
been able to get for MySQL and Base, used JDBC. At the time, that
documentation was not in the OOo/LO manuals. I had to search the web
for it.
If you have links to LO/OOo configuration documentation for ODBC
connection to MySQL, I would be willing to try it.

Thanks.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Extremely Slow Base Report Builder

Fernand,
I am assuming you are talking about the "Data" tab for the report where
there are "Content Type" and "Content" option lists. I tried it both
ways with the same results. Originally, I was using the SQL command(s)
the wizard created when I first created the report. Those SQL commands
accessed the data directly without using a query. I then changed it to
use the Query I created, so I could calculate the total cost based on
the quantity and unit cost data and pass it to the report for printing.
Both versions of the report performed about the same.

I am using the same query for my Calc version of the report and it
imports the data in a few seconds. So, I don't think that is the
bottleneck.

Thanks for your help.

Hello Drew,
I understand what you are saying, but I installed the LO 3.5.2 binary
(RPM) packages from the LO website. I repackaged them for Slackware,
but that does not change the 1s and 0s, just unpacks the RPMs and
re-packages the files into a Slackware package for installation.
Therefore, if there is an installation problem, it seems to be in the LO
packages. Note that I am using the Report Builder bundled into LO, not
the version from the extensions website. I do believe the newest is
1.2.1 rev 2, and the one in LO is still 1.0-something. I have not tried
to replace the bundled version with the 1.2 version.

I could live with 49 _"seconds"_. However, it is taking 49 _minutes_
for my report. My database is nothing special, just text and integer
values. Nine elements plus the key per record. No graphics. So, yes,
this problem does sound unusual. However, I have not been able to pin
down the problem yet. In the meantime, I am looking into using Calc to
print my data. It looks good and will do until I can get RB working.

BTW: The report is a simple text page header, Detail, and page footer,
no graphics there either. I do have the date and time fields in the
header, but that shouldn't bring it down. Actually, I do have some
separator lines inserted at the bottom of the header and the bottom of
each Detail line. Page number at the bottom of the footer.

Best wishes,

//drew

Drew,
Yes! Your procedure worked fine! Thanks much. It will make using Calc
to produce my reports a lot more error free. I have not tested the
dynamic importation of the data yet, but even if it doesn't work, which
I am sure it will, this procedure is much better than my copy-paste
procedure. Another benefit of using Calc will be to save paper.
Whereas the ORB output used 94+ pages, the Calc output, being more
compressed, even with the separation grid, produces about half that
number - 47 pages.

Your suggestion of an installation problem causing ORB to fail for me
got me thinking and I realized I did modify one aspect of the LO
distribution package. I moved the 2 executable files in "/usr/bin" to
"/opt/bin". Just in case ORB was relying on these files being in
"/usr/bin", the first thing I did today was to restore those 2 files in
"/usr/bin" and try ORB again. No joy. It is now taking 66 minutes.
However, since my last tests, I entered more data and now my database is
1800+ records. So that accounts for the increase in time. Note that it
does not take anywhere near this amount of time to import the data into
Calc. Calc does it in a few seconds, not tens of minutes.

Thanks very much for your help.

similarities internally, but I wasn't aware that my data could be

One limit to using Calc would be Calc's row limit. I think I read that
LO just raised the maximum rows, but if there are more database records

Can Calc be linked to a Base query to get its data?
If so, then all my sorting can be done in the query. I do not do any

Alex,
Thanks for your reply.
I will take your recommendation to update my Java to heart and do so.
My datasets (tables) are typically over 1000 records. The dataset I am
working on now, a parts inventory, is over 1500 records and I am only,
maybe, 10% done with it. So I still have a long way to go. This is the
first time I have seen Report Builder brought to its knees. It has
always been a bit slow, but this is ridiculous. I have had other
datasets with even more records, that RB has processed with reasonable
speed in the past. That is what makes this problem so strange. It is
like I reached some sort of threshold or something.
I wouldn't think keeping more than one Java version on my machine at
once would be a problem. I know Sun/Oracle recommends removing any old
versions, but it should work without doing that. Especially *Office,
which allows a specific version to be selected. I also have a copy of
the Free Software Foundation Java, and it seems to co-reside with the
"Sun" Java. However, I don't know what app on my machine is using it.

Thanks again for your help.

[libreoffice-users] Extremely Slow Base Report Builder

2012-05-23 Thread Girvin R. Herr

Greetings,
I have installed LibreOffice (LO) 3.5.3.2 and I am quite pleased with
it. I am a long-time OpenOffice (OOo) user going back to 1.0 and even
Star Office before that and after not being able to install the latest
Apache OpenOffice (AOO) version, I switched to LibreOffice. I say that
to confirm I am a new user to LO, but somewhat experienced with the
*Office tree.

I used Oracle Report Builder 1.2.1-rev2 on my OOo 3.3.0 for some time
and expected the LO Report Builder to be fine, especially since
configuring & importing my MySQL databases, forms, queries, etc. worked
great. Report Builder does seem to work - sort of- but it is extremely
slow when executing the report. So slow, it is unusable; taking minutes
to display a report in Writer. Then it keeps repeatedly going out to
lunch for long periods so I cannot do anything with the report in
Writer, such as scrolling down to examine the report. I am using the
following database server:

   MySQL 5.0.67
   MySQL-connector-java-5.0.7-bin.jar
   Sun Java 1.6.0u11

A few months ago, I had a similar problem with OOo 3.3.0 after I updated
my Java RE to 1.6.0u30. I posted my problem on the OOo Users forum and
was told OOo 3.3.0 will only work with Java up to u22. That problem did
not just affect Report Builder, but the entire Base functionality. This
time with LO, the non-Report Builder Base functions work fine, at
"normal" speed. I do not see any hesitation with Base form data entry.

Is my current Report Builder problem caused by this Java problem again?
Unlike OOo 3.3, will LO 3.5.3 work with the later Java versions and
should I try updating my Java again?
I also have a Free Software Foundation Java 1.4.2 installed, but I think
I read somewhere not to use it with LO.

Any suggestions where to look would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Girvin Herr
