Could you please let us know which version of LibreOffice you are

Re: [libreoffice-users] Combining Two Columns In-Place

2011-10-31 Thread Stephan Zietsman
Rich Shepard wrote:
In an Excel spreadsheet saved in .ods format are column pairs representing
data that can be combined into a single column because rows have a value in
one column or the other, but never both.

In Xess I was able to put the cursor in a cell (e.g., N2) and enter the
 formula
'+n2+o2' and have the sum of the two columns in N2. LO doesn't like this. It
told me to turn on iteration (error 522), but that just moved the error to
 523.

Your formula is referencing itself. Try typing exactly the same
formula in a different cell. For example:
in Cell P2 type the formula '+n2+o2' and let us know if this solves
your problem.

Tom Davies wrote:
I think the only problem is a missing = sign at the start of the formula?

 =n2+o2

rather than +n2+o2 should do the trick

Having a plus (+) at the beginning of the formula rather than an equal
sign (=) should not be a problem (this is accepted syntax).

Hi :)
I think there are lists for many different languages. Perhaps try
http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/
and just scroll down. Some lists might not be as active as others.

It might help to let us know what formula, which app, which version of LO
and which Operating System (Windows, Ubuntu, another GnuLinux, Bsd, Mac).
Any of those sorts of things would be good to know even if you can't tell us
all of them.
Good luck and regards from

Re: [libreoffice-users] Mail merge seems slow

2011-10-31 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Does that involve java somehow? Can you let us know which version of java you
are using?

Tools - Options - General/LibreOffice - Java

Version 6u21 or _21 is the fastest. The _20 and _22 are ok. The _24 is slow
and sometimes causes slight problems. Anything after _24 seems to causes
crashes and all sorts./ Luckily it is possible to have 1 version of java for
your web-browsers and everything else and a separate version installed just for
LibreOffice.

The devs are trying to eliminate the need for java where possible. I think
they are usign Python instead but i'm not sure.

Personally i would stick with the 6minutres rather than trying to fix the
problem unless it's something you have to do quite often. It's irritating but
fixing it might take a while.

 Hi.
I am performing mail merges (actually data into a
 certificate to print)
and find the merge is slow. I have 3.3.4 on Suse 11.0.
When I merge a simple document with 109 records in a calc
 sheet (4 items
of data per record) Print Monitor takes 6.5 minutes before
 I can start
 printing.

Is this typical? What is Print Monitor doing.

[libreoffice-users] XToolbarController createItemWindow() issue

2011-10-31 Thread othman
I implement a XToolbarControler. i have a XButton private field that i'm
setting inside the createItemWindow() method. for some reason when i
construct the xButton inside the createItemWindow()

  xButton  = (XButton) UnoRuntime.queryInterface(XButton.class,
d_xWinPeer);

and this method exits the xButton reference is null! why is that? and how to
fix it?
probably b/c the d_xWinPeer reference is destroyed when the method exits?
that's why xButton reference turns to NULL?
it seems all the UI components that we set inside createItemWindow are set
to Null after this method exits. How can we keep a reference to the XWindow
returned by this method ?
any help is much appreciated.

2011-10-31 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
It's all good. It's not really possible to notice everything about all
questions all the time. We get there in the end.

I was growling because DE usually means a Desktop Environment so at first i
assumed the subject-line was a typo and meant LXDE. Mint now seem to use LXDE
to mean something completely different too. All annoyingly heading for
increasing confusion.

Someone in documentation is trying to translate the excellent Faq that the
French team built but he has a lot else going on at the same time. The front
page is
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Faq
but i'm sure we could add sub-pages such as
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Faq/CopyPasteFormulas
or
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Faq/Dictionaries
to cover some issue that seem to crop up quite a bit. Or even help with
translating from the French.

I'm not sure anyone has time but it would probably be great.

Tom :)

 Thanks for your response.

I had tried redownloading and reinstalling LO only to find
 out it didn't fix
 the issue.

However, I got it working in a really confusing way.

I normally use the Xfce4 desktop environment, in which
 LibreOffice wasn't
working well. I installed KDE 4, and found out that in KDE
 there's none of
the problems I had with LO in Xfce4. I didn't change any
 settings in LO.
Everything in LibreOffice worked fine under KDE.

The funny thing is, now LO works in Xfce4 too.

I have no clue what KDE4 did, but so far everything seems
 to be working
normally, even in Xfce4. I wonder if my font configuration
 was damaged and
KDE somehow fixed this in its startup procedures.

Whilst the mailmerge subroutine is python, but there is probably some
Java access going on in there, hence Tom's valid question as to the
version of the JDK being used, which will have a clear impact on the

Mailmerge within LO has never been particularly speedy anyway, but it
has got significantly worse since JDK 1.6.23.

are people on this list that might be able to help and they might be on later.
Apols and regards from

 I implement a XToolbarControler. i
have a XButton private field that i'm
setting inside the createItemWindow() method. for some
 reason when i
construct the xButton inside the createItemWindow()

       xButton  = (XButton)
 UnoRuntime.queryInterface(XButton.class,
 d_xWinPeer);

and this method exits the xButton reference is null! why is
 that? and how to
 fix it?
probably b/c the d_xWinPeer reference is destroyed when the
 method exits?
that's why xButton reference turns to NULL?
it seems all the UI components that we set inside
 createItemWindow are set
to Null after this method exits. How can we keep a
 reference to the XWindow
 returned by this method ?
 any help is much appreciated.

[libreoffice-users] Path change

2011-10-31 Thread David Hartung
I use Libreoffice with Ubuntu 11.04, the following is a copy of something I
posted to Launchpad:

I have a virtual drive partition on my computer, and have had since I bought
the machine in 2006. Sometime after I upgraded to 11.04, the frive name
changed from Data to 2127074260. I thought it odd, but assumed that it
was the result of one of the fixes put out since 11.04 was released.

I also have a Libreoffice spreadsheet set up with hyper-links to other files
on the above mentioned drive. I use this spreadsheet, and the links, daily.
About a week ago, I noticed that these links were no longer clickable.
When I checked, I found that the path in the hyperlink had changed. Below is
an example:

What the Path is supposed to be:
file:///media/2127074260/St%20Luke%20Lutheran%20Church,%20Starkville/St%20Luke%20Records%202011/Gospel/46%20Matthew%2025%2014-30,%2013%20November%202011,%20Pentecost%2022a.odt

What the Path had changed to:
file:///media/media/2127074260/St%20Luke%20Lutheran%20Church,%20Starkville/St%20Luke%20Records%202011/Gospel/46%20Matthew%2025%2014-30,%2013%20November%202011,%20Pentecost%2022a.odt

I am not certain if the path change and the drive name change are related,
but because all this has happened since the upgrade to 11.04, I thought that
here would be a good place to start. I am going to post a copy of this to
the Libreoffice support site, if I can.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Spell check

Hi Manfred,

Thank you for pointing me to the workaround.
The workaround only takes about 20 seconds (once you know how).
Problem solved!

[libreoffice-users] in Calc: Keyboard trouble with Ctrl+Shift+RightArrow

2011-10-31 Thread David S. Crampton

Context:
in Calc of LO 3.4.3 on WinXP Pro
The cell range L155:AA155 contains empty cells. The cells on either end of
that range are filled with numbers. The cell above L155 contains a
formula. The task is to copy the formula from L154 to L155, make an edit,
extend the range from L155 to AA155, Edit | Fill Right.

The keystokes:
In L154: Ctrl+C
Down Arrow: moves to L155
Ctrl+V: paste
Esc: terminate the dotted border focus on L154
F2: make the small edit
Enter: terminate the edit
Ctrl+Shift+RightArrow: SHOULD extend to AB156 where it finds the next
filled cell in the row.
~: ACTUALLY extends selection to the entire column L.
()

This unexpected column selection is, of course, very disorienting to one's
eyeballs and brain.

Workaround
start as above until:
F2: make the small edit
Enter: terminate the edit
RightArrow (once): shift focus from L155 to M155
LeftArrow (once): shift focus from M155 to L155
Ctrl+Shift+RightArrow: SHOULD and DOES extend to AB156 where it finds the
next filled cell in the row.

I use the M$ Natural Keyboard. The defective behavior results using either
of the possible keys for RightArrow: the 4-keypad compass set or the
NumberPad (NumLock off).

Just out of curiosity do you now see a star beside Manfred's answer? I
'ticked' the star to the far right but i'm not sure if it only shows up on
my system.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Error Formula...

2011-10-31 Thread Tom
Hi :)
Did you mean you opened the Calc file in LibreOffice 3.3.1 on Windows 7 ?
Did it open in MicroSoft Office instead? Windows machines often have MS
Office instead of LibreOffice/OpenOffice and things do go wrong with the
older ODS format sometimes. So, it is worth making sure you have a newer
version of LibreOffice

The 3.2.1 is very old so it's well worth updating to LibreOffice 3.4.3 or
something like that.
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/

If it really is OOo 3.2.1 then the OpenOffice forums might be worth trying
http://user.services.openoffice.org/

Do you know what format the file is saved in? Is it ODS or something else?
Regards from
Tom :)

Mailmerge within LO has never been particularly speedy anyway, but it
has got significantly worse since JDK 1.6.23.

Thanks to you both. I have 1.6.0.20 installed, so it looks like it might
not get much better.

[libreoffice-users] Filter Menu

2011-10-31 Thread ESChamp
When one attempts to open a file that LO Writer does not recognize, it
pops up a menu and asks you to choose one.

Menu items are in random order. It would be nice if it were in
alphabetical order, wouldn't it?

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] Paragraph Styles Not Updating

2011-10-31 Thread Don Parris
Hi all,

I am having to update a couple documents (contact directories) I created
under OOo some years ago. I had to save the documents in MS Word format
(*.doc), but used paragraph styles to maintain uniformity of style and ease
of maintenance. I wanted to change the color for a particular heading
style, and it should have changed the color for each of the headings of
that style. Unfortunately, modifying the paragraph style did not change
even the particular paragraph the cursor was on, let alone the other
headings of the same style.

I right-clicked on the paragraph style in the Styles list box, then chose
the modify option. I then chose the font effects tab, and changed the
color. I clicked Apply and Ok. Nothing happened. I also made sure
the automatically update option was checked.

I saved the document as an ODT document and then tried the process again.
Again, nothing happened. The document was originally created in OOo (can't
say what version, just that I used a version recent enough to use ODF).
Any ideas what I can do, apart from changing each heading individually,
which styles are supposed to help me avoid?

I am using LO 3.4.3 (Portable Apps).

Thanks!
Don
