I added conditional formatting to about 80 cells: it then takes about a
minute to respond to any input, whether in the cells with conditional
formatting or not. Am I doing anything wrong? Is there a way to get
conditional formatting without this speed degradation?

Depends on what you are doing now. Exactly what do your conditions look
  like?

For instance, if you test 80 cell values against all the values in a
giant cell range, let's say 1 cells, then Calc needs to work
  through 1 cells 80 times.

If you, for instance, test a cell value against highest value in a
very big cell range, then it's better to calculate the max value in a
cell, then comapre each of the 80 cells to that cell. Then the max
calculation only needs to be done once.

But I don't know what you did, so this is only a wild guess.

Re: [libreoffice-users] How to extract a color from a text?

2013-05-28 Thread jorge
Hi all:

I think in Calc you can use copy and paste special (Select only
format).

In Writer you can select the word or letter that have the color you
need to know. Then you can go to Menu - Format -Character- Font Color
and there you can see the Number of the color (Grafico 10 -in spanish in
my case as example). Now you can find it in the icon of the color
select ... there you can see the number when you put the pointer of the
mouse on each color.

There might be an easier way, but if you use an unzip file to look at
the zip'd contents of a .odt file, you'll find content.xml. In there
will be style definitions that include colours specified in
hexadecimal. For example, from a little test file that I made:

 style:style style:name=T4 style:family=textstyle:text-properties
 fo:color=#008000//style:style
 text:span text:style-name=T4green/text:span

You can then use Tools Options LibreOffice Colours
to add any desired colour to your GUI.

 Is this what you wanted?

As you can see, the chart is order by office but I got 18 and 16 in
Cart and Lim but It should show 0 in both. The LO program get
datas from Ala and Here for Cart and Lim. What happens?

There is no bug - but two mistakes. As you know, if you omit the
optional fourth parameter in the VLOOKUP() function, the data is
assumed to be sorted. But as the help text makes clear, a value is
always returned in this case - corresponding to the the last value
smaller than the criterion. In your case, Ala is next before Cart
and Here is next before Lim. To prevent this, you need to add
FALSE or 0 as the fourth parameter to VLOOKUP().

Second, there is no magic process by which Calc will guess that you
wish for a zero value when no match is found: there is simply no value
to return! The value #N/A will be returned instead. If you want zero
values here, you need to test for this error value and replace it with
zero. You can do this using the ISNA() function, using something like:

  =IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(Xn;array;2;0));0;VLOOKUP(Xn;array;2;0))

or, more simply, (new in LO 4):
 =IFNA(VLOOKUP(Xn;array;2;0);0)

  I trust this helps.

 Folks,

In opening this thread ( Nabble
 http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/stable-vs-new-tp4068750.html ) Tom is
correct in a practical sense. Stability is an inherent component of a mature
product. And testing during the development cycles by more potential user
willing to invest a little time in QA is essential to the health of the
 project.

But a key aspect Tom omits is that LibreOffice development and release stages
are tightly timed--and by proxy so is its support. Nor does he mention that
the project has stayed on schedule since inception--synchronizing to a six
month minor release cycle implemented in a broader ecosystem of Free and Open
 Source Software.

The Release Plan for LibreOffice publishes the release schedule, current
status and a historical record of the project, worth a read:

 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Release_Plan

Keeping to the time based release plan means that the delay between initial
release on a minor version and the next minor version release is just six
months. And that the delay between the x.x.0 release and each bug fix
release has been and will continue to be just one month. So, while I don't
completely agree Toms' assessment of how far along each bug fix takes
things--it is just not the way the user feedback, QA,and development work
proceeds--but it is not unreasonable practical advise.

Support has kept to the same cycle--for the most part--user documentation
(static HTML or wiki based, and published) can always use more active
contributors and lags a bit as a result.

This is not just development churn, there is solid User eXperience, QA and
development work at every tick of the release cycle. And as a minor release
nears end of its development life it gets less and less development
attenetion--QA and development resources long since shifted to new
development and bug fixes. Enhancements and bug fixes become more and more
costly to push backward with each tick in development cycle--so less likely
to occur. In a sense that also is stability, or maybe stagnation.

The project is on sound footings as a time based release, that is not going
to change so no sense in debating it here. Rather, if you have specific
questions or comments about its implementation or how best to make use of
software from time based release manged project that would be a worthwhile
 discussion.

backward to the 3.6.x branch. It was included in the 4.1.0 release, and has
been patched for the upcoming 4.0.5 release. Users of 3.6.x must continue to
use a Java 6 JRE (e.g. 1.6u45) and manual install of Java Access Bridge

Subject: Sophie's blog Fw: [libreoffice-marketing] Sophie's blog article on
 LibreOffice Marketing contributors

 Hi :)
There have been a number of interesting articles about LibreOffice recently.
I keep meaning to pass a list of the links on to the Users List and perhaps
relevant ones in a list to other mailing lists too.

Sophie's blog is interesting because she was one of the original founders.
Marc also updates the events calendar.
1.If you find there is an event locally then please do drop in and meet
people from TDF and other LibreOffice users. Make yourself known.
Perhaps grab some swag, perhaps help out for half an hour or so.
2.If your work sends you to an event that might have a TDF and LO
presence then you can check the calendar and you'd be welcomed at the TDF,
 LO stall.
3.If you hear of an event that you think should be on the calendar
then state your case to the marketing list and let them know how much
help you could give. There is talk of having a go bag of marketing
materials (perhaps including a roller-banner) that could be mailed to a
 local-users group for such events.
4.If you fancy making a special effort to travel to one of the events
then it would be smart to join the marketing list for a bit and perhaps see
if others are going from your area or what arrangements other people have
made (especially if you need to stay overnight. For one event an excellent
cafe allowed people to use their premises overnight so doubtless nearly
everyone woke up to wonderful smells and fantastic coffee. At other events
it might have been possible to get a group discount at a hotel, perhaps
making all the rooms on one floor into conference quarters).

 Regards from
 Tom :)

So, you are on the marketing list, either contributing with discussions on
marketing; either on the sidelines, just curious to see what we do; on the
sidelines not knowing what to do or how to do it ...

Have a read of Sophie's blog article on marketing. This may clear up some
aspects of our marketing team's job.[1]

If you see somewhere you can help out, even if it is just for one little
request for help or even helping out with larger time-consuming requests
... any help is appreciated. Even better if you think you can help
representing LibreOffice at conferences; check out our international events
calendar and you may find an upcoming conference happening near you.[2]

Have a read of the blog article. It is really worth it!

 Cheers,

 Marc

So, in Ubuntu 12.04 and Win7 just grab the first document's window and drag
it to the far left as though you are dragging it off-screen. When a weird
shadow fills half the screen let go. Whatever size and shape the windo had
been it now fills half the screen. Do the same to the 2nd document's window
but drag it to the right. Errr i choose left first just because it feels
more comfortable to me. If you try to drag it off the top of the screen then
 the window tries to maximise.

Of course you could use Alt Tab to flick between any windows on the workspace
you are on and that can be a good way to compare quickly.

Most GnuLinux distros also let you flick between different work-spaces
quickly so changes jump out at you that way too. Windows users probably
aren't familiar with the spinning cube (which i can never get to work). Of
course Ubuntu kinda lost that quick flick between workspaces in 11.04 using
Unity (unless i'm missing a key-combo (which is highly likely))

This would realy be a good feature. I also miss the possibility to compare

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice and printers

2011-06-27 Thread jorge
Hi.

I think that it isn't a LibreOffice problem. Probably you made a printer
from Printer Debian Feature (Menu-Printer). In this case you have to
eliminate the printer from there and check the other as default. It is
because as my experience, LibreOffice use this cups to get the available
printers installed in Operative System. If you keep both installed,
and tp1 as default, LibreOffice gets it as a first option.

Jorge Rodriguez

Some time ago I had to install another printer instead of my original one.
This printer was then listed under tp1 (the first one being tp0).
Now I have got my original printer back (from repair!) and have eliminated
the second one in the respective .cfg-files of cups and turboprint. However ,
when I print something under LibreOffice, it still offers me BOTH printers
as a choice. But, ofcourse tp1 doesn't really exist anymore. How do I
 eliminate it under LibreOffice.
This is certainly only a cosmetic issue, but I would still be interested
 in understanding it. Thanks

Re: [libreoffice-users] Match cell against any of range of regexes?

2011-06-30 Thread jorge
Hi:

I would suggest to do as this (If you have order the information as you
explain and show in your e-mail):

1) Sheet 1:

a) Put 1 (without ) in each search engine but in column B
b) Put 2 (without ) in each information relative to search engine
in column B too.

Something like this:

 Data
 Clasification
 google
   1
 cnn
   2
 bin
   1
 hotmail
   2
 Sport
   2
 mamma
   1

c) Use Automatic Filter (Data Menu) and select all 1 Clasification.
Copy and paste in Sheet 2 in column A. Like This:

 Search Engine
 google
 bin
 mamma

d) Do the same process for 2 and the result copy and paste in Sheet 2
in column B and the final result it could be like this:

 Search Engine
 Information
 google
 cnn
 bin
 hotmail
 mamma
 Sport

I hope you understand me and solve your problem.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Help with formatting footnotes...

2011-07-07 Thread jorge
Hi

I don't know if there are others ways to solve your problem, but I would
sugest this way:

To make a macro (How?) Like this:

1) Menu Tools-Macros-Save Macro
2) Here Appears a little windows that says something like this Stop to
save macro (Not to click yet)
3) Menu Insert-(Footnotes-Final Note). Here appears a windows for
Footnotes. Click Accept.
4) Click in window Stop to save Macro (Point 2)). Here appear a
window. Select MyMacros-Standard and then Select New Module: Appears a
window: Write the name- Footnotes and Accept.
5) Menu Tools-Macros-Organize Macros-OpenOffice.org Basic... Here appear
a window. Select MyMacros-Standard-Footnotes (Your Macro). Click
Asign. Appears a new window. Select Save in
OpenOffice.org-Writer (Below the Comands Chart).
6) Now, select ADD, and appear a new window. Here, in the chart
Category, roll down until the end to find + Macros OpenOffice.org.
Click it (+) and there appears + My Macros. Click it and Standard and
select Footnotes and Click ADD.
7) Now in the Commands Chart you can find Footnotes command. If You
select it you can modify the name if you want, with the command at
right. Then Assure that the tool bar is Standard (At the top of Chart)
8) Click Accept.
9) Now, in the Tool Bar of your document Appears a Footnotes icon (At
the top of the document). If you click it, it insert a footnote in your
document. Now You not need go to Menu-Insert-Footnotes and make the
footnote each time. With only one click you are going to insert the
footnotes that you need. It respect the consecutive numbers although you
save and close the document and then open and continue working.

I hope this help you to solve your problem. If you need adicional help
say me,

Regards,

Jorge Rodríguez

Hi All! Thank you for the replies!
When I say footnotes, I am talking about the type used in academic
writing. Endnotes also have the same problem... For a simple explanation
of what footnotes and endnotes are, see:
 http://www.aresearchguide.com/7footnot.html

Let me be a little more specific about my problem . . . while I am writing,
I use Zotero to insert footnotes containing citation information. Also, I
add footnotes manually when I need to add a little extra information. These
footnotes come up in a different font than I am using, and I also like to
change the font size to be a little smaller. I can not select all the
footnotes at once and change these things. I have to do each one manually,
which adds up quickly when you consider there are 50-60 per chapter of my 8
chapter dissertation. And then there are other documents that I am working
on too. I almost never have a piece of writing without footnotes.

The next problem I have encountered is how footnotes and endnotes appear in
.docx format; especially when I open them in Microsoft Word 2008 or 2011 for
Mac. Unfortunately, no matter how much I'd like to use LibreOffice instead
of Word, I have to submit my documents in .docx form to be read in Word. I
have already done this once, and I had to re-insert every footnote in Word
 after transferring the document.

Because of these two problems, at this point, LibreOffice is simply unusable
for me - and probably for most academics and university students. It's a
shame, because I really love it otherwise - especially its support for
uncommon fonts (which I use a lot of). I can use N'Ko with LibreOffice, but
not with Word 2011. (For more info on N'Ko, see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%27Ko_script). While creating a macro may
work, footnotes and endnotes are something that really should work
automatically - especially for people who aren't good with computers, like
me! :) And even if I do get that working, .docx files need to transfer
seamlessly to Word 2011. Unfortunately, even if I switch to LibreOffice,
the rest of my colleagues probably won't and so I need to be able to work
 with them without problems.

I hope this explains everything! Thanks again!

4) Accept

I know that this conditional format is for all area selected and it

You are quite correct that the conditional formulae are copied too,
however the formulae still refer to the same cell references given in
 the copied cell.

In other words if you copied cell C3 and pasted special on C4:c10, the
conditional formatting would be copied but the cell references in cell
C10 for the conditional formatting would point to the same cell as those
 referenced in cell C3.

Please confirm if this is the case.

The type change currency between USD and other countries (If you want

  Hello LibreOffice fans...

I'm looking for some help with calc on a spreadsheet that I have set up. I'm
not sure if it needs a macro set up, or if there's something in LibreOffice

  this

  Here's the problem:

  - I have a large risk management spreadsheet that contains a number of cells
with currency based risk numbers in it; some of these are manually entered
by the user and some are calculated from cells where the user enters the
  information.
  - Currently, the financial risk cells are all in USD ($) currency.
  - If I have a user in another country that wants to use this spreadsheet,
I'd like that person to be able to either press a button, or select from a
drop-down list, a list of available currencies to choose from.
  - When they choose their currently, I want a macro (or something!) to go and
find all the US currency based cells in the spreadsheet and change them to
the currency selected by the user.
  - If I can get this to work, then this spreadsheet could pretty much be used
in any country/currency and the user would not have to go into every single
currency based cell and make the changes needed (which would be time
  prohibitive).
  - i.e. Looking for a minimum click solution to achieve this. I do realize

I want to be able to over-ride this so that if a local user sees the
spreadsheet in USD and changes it to, for example, GBP, then when he sends
it back to me, I see the numbers in GBP and not my local language setting
(which would default back to USD).

I hope I have explained this clearly! If not please don't hesitate to

If I understand you problem, you want to show the currency in a user
defined manner. One possibility is to have a cover worksheet that
summarizes the data in any currency. You might use a macro to set the
 proper currency and exchange rates.

One idea that might make finding all the cells with data to be converted
is to name each one as a one-cell range (ex the cell sheet4!C3 is named
 'Fred').

FWIW, here is a relatively painless way to install an older JRE along side
 the default Ubuntu one.
 ( I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 64bit )

It definitely sped up my Base table browsing, but then I don't have any
binaries embedded in my tables. It has the bonus of not messing with the
 existing JRE

 Overview:

 1. Download the JRE archive (approx. 20 mb)
 2. Extract in /tmp
 3. as root, copy the extracted directory to /usr/lib/jvm
 4. set this JRE as the JRE of choice in LO (ToolsOptionsJava)
 5. Exit LO restart

 Instructions:

 1.Download jdk-6u21-linux-i586.bin (for i386) or jdk-6u21-linux-x64.bin for
 x86_64 from
 http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javasebusiness/downloads/java-archive-downloads-javase6-419409.html#jdk-6u21-b07-oth-JPR
JRE archive at ORACLE . Save to /tmp
2.run it using: sh jdk-6u21-linux-i586.bin . The JRE is now extracted to
 /tmp/jre1.6.0_21/
 3. copy to /usr/lib/jvm sudo cp -a jre1.6.0_21/ /usr/lib/jvm
 4. Exit restart office. In ToolsOptionsJava, choose 1.6.0_21. Exit
 restart office
 5. Load you Base file compare the speed.

If you want to remove it simply set the JRE back to the old one in
 ToolsOptionsJava sudo rm -rf /usr/lib/jvm/jre1.6.0_21/

I suggest you this:

1) Make the pilot data
2) If you format cell orientation (cell of pilot selected), you can
chage the orientation (Vertical in grade that you want, except the first
column). If you want to change the titles of headers, select the cell
and use F2 to do it.
3) If you want to change all the columns headers orientations you can
copy the pilot data to other space or sheet and then change the format
cell orientation (Menu-Format-Cell)

 Hi,

I have an old spreadsheet in ODS format. The file was originally an XLS

When I try an delete a sheet from the file I get an error Error saving
the document FILE: Write Error. The file could not be written.

If, prior to attempting the sheet removal, I change the contents of a
cell the file is saved without any problems.

When the error occurs the saving progress bar appears, moves to ~20%
completion stops for several seconds, then progresses to ~80% completion
at normal saving speed, stops again for several seconds then crashes.
This is in contrast to a normal save where the progress bar moves at a
constant rate for the entire saving process.

If I attempt to insert a sheet I get the same problem.

*I should point out* here that the sheet being deleted and inserted are
mid-file, that is I have 18 tabs and I am trying to delete sheet 7. When
I insert a sheet I am inserting after sheet 7 or 8 (does not really matter).

What I have noticed is if I use the 'add sheet' tab -- that is the last
tab with the green '+' sign instead of the name to add a sheet; a sheet
can be added and the document saved. This same sheet can be deleted,
although the progress bar behaves as if the error is going to happen,
that is it pauses at 20% and 80% completion; except this time it
finishes without the error dialog appearing.

My tests indicate that the last sheet of the original untouched file can
be deleted. Like above the progress bar behaves an unusual way but does
complete without the error dialog appearing.

I can not reproduce the error on a new clean file.

If I work back through the historical copies of the file, I can only
reproduce the error in this years version. It is as if the file has
become partially corrupted. The question is how and can it be easily fixed.

Before I spend the time recreating the file from scratch or modifying
 one of the old backups...

*Has anyone encountered or heard of a similar problem?*

 *Anyone got some ideas?*

 *Is it worth upgrading LibreOffice?*

 I am running LibreOffice 3.4.1 OOO340m1 (Build:103) on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
The java version used is Sun Microsystems Inc. 1.6.0_26, although I have
also checked and verified the problem occurs on 1.6.0_20 (which just
happened to be on the system).

LibreOffice was manually installed from downloaded DEB files *not*
installed from the LibreOffice PPA repository or the Ubuntu Software Centre.

Created a new file with one less tab. All tabs were named the same as

The problem is that all tab / sheet references after the omitted sheet
moved across one. Despite the formula referencing the sheet name, the
name is actually just a human readable cue for the underlying sheet

pointed to 'accounts lookup list' now points to the Tax sheet, which was
#18 but is now #17 in the new file.

Created a new file with exactly the same number of tabs. All tabs were

Then with baited breath I deleted the unrequired sheet that triggered
this journey in the first place and clicked save. *It worked* - that is,
it saved without triggering a write error.

I have checked - (a) all data is intact, and (b) all the formulas are
 working. :)

 Hi Everyone,

I have been doing some follow-up investigations that I thought you might
 like to be made aware.

First, why? Well after testing the file that I recreated by copying the
text, formula and styles I could not cause the error to occur again.
This is what I reported yesterday. I then proceeded with importing the
few images and 'artwork' objects from the old file to the new. After
several saves and sheet manipulations I noticed the file became unstable
 again.

The outcome of my investigation was that one of the image files used on
one of the sheets had become corrupted* and adding this file in caused
the file to become unstable - eventually exhibiting the problem I
mentioned about not being able to save after a sheet was deleted. These
'corrupted' files are relatively benign with the error only becoming
apparent *once* you attempt to delete the sheet. So somehow the error
caused problems with the broader 'workbook' structure not the sheet
structure. Although I compared files between different versions of the
 file the XML were too varied (usually style names and definitions;
 content was identical).

 * note I say corrupted but it rendered OK and only resulted
in the observed behaviour one a sheet is deleted. I 'deem' it
corrupted as once replaced with a clean version render and
saved as a new file by GIMP, the problem disappeared.

The error was with the particular corrupt objects. On recreating new
images and inserting them into a file I have not been able to trigger
any problems. If I cut-and-paste from the original 'corrupt' file the
file becomes unstable after a few saves and sheet manipulations.

So the steps for salvage is...
 1. recreate a new file with the exact number of sheets as the original.
Ensure each sheet names are the same.
 2. Cut and Paste each sheet. Make sure you 'Paste special' limiting the
content being placed in the new file to text, numbers, date time,
 formulas and formats.
 3. If you have images in the file. Recreate / Save using another
package. As mentioned I used GIMP.
 4. Insert new copies of the images into file. *Don't* cut-and-paste
 objects from the old file.
 5. If you have any lines, text boxes and artwork; recreate them from new.

 During this process...
 - Save as a new version (+tabs, +data, +images, +other objects)
 following each step.
 - Test each version thoroughly before proceeding.
 - Only add one object at a time, so if something goes wrong you can
 isolate the problem component.
 - To check it is not a bug try and recreate with a fresh file.

A couple of quick notes that may be valuable to others...
 - ODS files are archives. Use an archive facility to extract the data
inside. Inspect the contents in the folders to see what is different.
 - On every 'Save as' the file size changes. This is not due to changes
in the file contents, but rather in changes in how the components of the
file is compressed/archived. If you open a file, add objects then save,
the file size with be so big. Open that file and Save as a new name
and the file will be a different size. If you extract the files the
contents of all the files and directories are identical. It is just the
internal archive facility in LO will decide the best compaction routine
 based on what it encounters.
 - The content.xml file can be quite large and has no internal
end-of-line characters. This make it difficult to open and be parse by
various text editors, xml viewers and comparison facilities. To insert a
EOL character after the end of each tag (i.e. ), I used the following
command in the terminal (requires Linux).

 cat content.xml | sed -e 's//\n/g' content_with_linebreaks.xml

cat just spews the content of the text file to the standard output.
I then pipe it to sed, where I used regular expressions to find ''
and replace every instance of it with '\n'. I then compared the
 contents with Diffuse.

The pilot uses one distinct set of automatically generated styles. For
column headers in the English GUI the style is named DataPilot_Category.
When the pilot is rebuilt on refresh, all formatting falls back to that
 style.
 - Application of some other style will be reset to DataPilot_Category.
 - Hard attributes will be reset to the bare DataPilot_Category settings.
 - Modifying DataPilot_Category itself will format both, row headers
 and column headers.

I think that Vista or the OpenOffice 3.1.0 would lose something as

I suggest you a probe (If you have some free time):

Why not install again OpenOffice 3.1.0 in other computer and try to use

*** Jorge, as I respond to your email I find out a range of things of
note, as I try and support or refute my ideas. It is enlightening to
read the entire post but you can just as easily jump to HERE ***

 Sorry Jorge,

 I suppose it is confusing.

The problem is the corruption due to the insertion of the image is not
immediately obvious. Then as the file becomes more progressively more
 corrupt.

 The sequence was like this
 1. Cut-and-paste data
 2. Reinsert images and objects
 3. Other stuff...
 4. Issue with comments noted

What surprised me was after recreating a clean file for use I then ended
up with an error popping up. No comments were found anywhere.

So I stripped the file back to the individual components -- data,
format, images, etc. Adding each one separately then testing extensively.

On adding the images I noted some funny stuff happening to the file
size. as I saved, re-saved, deleted sheets, re-saved, etc... I noticed
that the file showed more problems rendering images (images disappeared
as well as references to files disappeared). Soon afterwards the file
had problems saving after deletion of the sheet.

So I presume that the images caused the corruption of the structure, the
problem progressively got worse, then the comments field tipped the
scale and caused the error in saving after the deletion of the sheet.
anyway that seems as plausible as any explanation I have seen already.

As stated I am unable to reproduce these errors on new files. despite
 trying repeatedly for hours.

As stated previously I was able to shake the problem by
cutting-and-pasting the data into the spreadsheet. This included
everything images and all. I could not trigger the error despite hours
of testing. Consequently I posted the 'solution' to this thread.

After several hours of adding and deleting data, the problem reappeared.

As stated I then recreated the file including data-formula-format, minus
other objects then progressively built up the file until it mimicked the
original. Each step I tested, retested and checked yet again. In the end
I noted things got 'wonky' after insertion of the images-artwork. this
did not particularly make sense to me but I persisted in splitting the
objects being inserted in the document until I could identify the
culprit. This eventually identified a single image (originally a GIF
that was converted to a PNG). Add this image to the sheet and
progressively problems appear. If I recreate a PNG file using GIMP and
insert this I can't get the problems to appear. This is using the same
file, data and files - side by side. Very confusing.

 There is only two conclusions
 (a) that the file is corrupt, something corrupted it and at present the
first thing I notice a problem occurring after it is inserted is this
 image.
 (b) that LO accesses and manipulated the file incorrectly. In other
words their is a bug in the code.

As I am not inclined to post a file with all my financial details on the
Internet, and I have no other versions of LO around to test the second
theory I am in a quantry.

  HERE

Well... As it turns out I have an old version of OpenOffice 3.1.0
OOO310m11 (Build: 9399) lying around on an old Windows Vista laptop I
 was unaware about.

Exact same file (except for one computer is accessing the local drive
and the other a SAMBA network drive)...
 - LO baulks with the error blah blah unable to write
 - OO does not! Wh?

Alright I am on Ununtu. I opened a copy of the file via nautilus from a
local drive mounted using fstab - the error occurs. If I use nautilus to
locate and access the same samba share the windows machine used - the
 error occurs.

 Somehow I am relieved.

OK, I test using another machine ubuntu-ubuntu using LO 3.3.2, both via
a NFS mount and Samba share. Both sheet deletions and saved worked on
the exact same file that my machine baulks with - that is the error did
 not occur.

I am bloody confused! The problem is computer specific and file
specific. As part of the entire exercise I completely uninstalled every
LO related package and reinstalled them with all the dependencies.

I have check and rechecked the file permissions, ownerships and groups.
 Nothing untoward

Re: [libreoffice-users] Opening PDF files in Draw

2011-08-13 Thread jorge
Hi

Excuse me, but it is important to know what do you need to do with PDF
file: Edit, copy something...? It is because you would use other
programs specialized for that. OCR program is used for images txt
documents for example. If your PDF document haven't image txt datas you
don't need OCR program to access the PDF document.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: export sql to odb?

2011-08-15 Thread jorge
Hi

I used many years ago access data base and I remember that you can
export de data base to spreadsheet (excel). Then you would do:

1) Open Base program and open directly the excel spreadsheet and save as
data Base.

or

2) Open the excel spreadsheet with Calc, save as .ods and then open Base
and import the spreasheet .ods.

Both methods permit change your original data base to native LO Data
Base.

Hi

Many days ago some of us were talking about BASE and its problems. One
of you noted about Kexi base program that's part of Office Suite of
KDE ... as alternative of BASE.

I installed that Office suite in Fedora 15 and opened access 2003 data
base that I have. I can't probe with 2007 access data base because I
don't have an example of that.

I'm not use it a lot but it looks good. I suggest to others to test it
if have time and are interested because it would be an alternative to
BASE if it won't improve in the next time.

I have to say that the KDE complete Office suite (Included Kexi) isn't
in Ubuntu 10.04 lts repositories. I think is a recently improved program
of KDE.

I hope this post help some one though it isn't part of LO.

Aye. It's just that working in the real world as opposed to ranting on a

making a dent in the monopoly Microsoft has on the corporate desktop. It
would be NICE of course if Libre/OpenOffice was used more, but it isn't, and
there isn't as yet much imputus to change.

Change, as constant as it is doesn't come easy for the majority. Habits
are hard to break even when proven wrong. Microsoft is both a majority
and a habit and it takes the daring and strong to be free. Linux and
open-source is not a place for lazy people. Change starts when enough
 people question status-quo.

When I released this, I decided it's better to stop being so fanatical about
Linux and open-soruce and instead understand WHY people use things such as
Outlook so much, and I discovered it's because Microsoft are damn good at
finding out what their customers want. Implementation needs a little work
  sometimes, but they aren't stupid.

That's a good one. Guess what people want? The want to get on with their
lives and really done care how the catalysts get created. So, it follows
that if they're already doing that with Option-A, they wont see reasons
to try Option-B even when Option-B may be more suitable for them. I
speak based on observations from my environs. People here use M$-Office
not because they know about exchange or cool features like automation.
They do so because they first knew M$-Office.

90% of these people cant understand serious formula syntaxes for Excel

Guess what? I'm discussing business here not individuals. You and I
know that Calc will conveniently replace their pirated bloat-ware
(bloat-ware because they use less than half the features packed into it
... and worse, its a hacked product). These are the people who need
Calc and open-source products the most. They cant afford bloat-ware but
for some weird reason they just want the label -- Hey, I know/use
 M$-Office too -- Its crazy

Like you said, Microsoft knows how to take advantage of their customer's
inclinations (its about the money eventually). These people are lazy so
'ease' matters. Implementation may not be so good underneath but who
cares ... they don't even see it. So they 'dope' the less enlightened
majority with 'ease' while they tidy up on the hidden mess gradually.
It works because changing the majority's collective choice later will be
harder when the habit is formed.

Here is another example: For instance, I have been porting a tool I
developed for 'easing' the pain of fellow lecturers in creating
grade/result sheets at our University. It was written for Excel 2003 in
VBA. It was relatively 'easier' to develop compared to my route in
LibreOffice (well that, because I chose a different language. BASIC
would have been much the same ... probably). My discovery is that
developing extensions for LibreOffice is W.O.R.K!

What is the advantage? The developer is made more aware of the internal
workings of LibO. What is the loss? Time! The curve is much more and
someone who wants to get going is already gone. So the 'ease' concept
sells again for macro developers in M$ world but that doesn't make for
better/experienced 'black-belt' developers in the long run (... yeah, I
can hear you almost say 'who cares!').

Getting LibO into offices around here means presenting it first before
M$ products find their way into those machines. Then the users will
never try M$ again even with all the vanilla coatings they come with
--OR-- You induce the change by providing 'ease' in form of Extensions
in LibO and install libO with those for those businesses then carefully
silence M$ products. They wont even miss it. I do that here because
those M$ products are pirated anyway. It just makes them more honest
business men (lol!). I bet they wont consider M$ again when they're
told to PAY FOR THE REAL THING!

Especially if the other software can read the open format, wouldn't it be

a plugin that helps Microsoft Offices users read

I've been thinking a lot about this lately as many of my clients are coming
to LibreOffice from Microsoft Office and I deal with both packages quite a
bit. Many times, one of the first things I do once LibreOffice is set up is
to show clients how to save in Microsoft format as opposed to .odf. It's
actually one of the first questions they ask. Lately, I've been wondering
about the wisdom of an open source package actively supporting a secret
  format like the Office ones.

Would it not be preferable to support *only* saving in the open document
format and then providing a plugin for Microsoft Office users who needed
it? IMHO, allowing users to save in secret formats just continues the
problem. They're still using proprietary software, just packaged a
  different way.

  Thoughts?

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice / OpenOffice Calc very slow with Excel File

2011-09-25 Thread jorge
Hi

I suggest you to do this (I did and it was good with your sample.xls
file)(But I did with OpenOffice 3.2 but I supposed it will be good too
with LO):

1) Open file with LO.
2) Save file in format microsoft excel 5.0 (xls) with Save As Menu

I did and the file was opened fast and well. Then I used that file to
save as .ods and all was well too.

(File Size: Around 8 MB )

This is lowest size which i have, if i open this file in excel it works

very slow, i have also tried it with OpenOffice 3.3 but still the issue is
 same.

I have also tried converting it to the .ODS using fileconverter.com, file
size dramatically reduced (Around 300kb only) but still it takes around 15
min to open the file, and after opening if i move cursor it take lot of time
to move from one screen to another screen.

(MY PC Configuration is enough good, so the configuration is not an issue,
as i have also tried it on IBM X3400 SERVER's with 16 GB Memory)

Or why not just entering the Unicode for it (α=U+03B1)? You didn't

 No, why should it?

The priority is display of odf format documents. Since you are

 irrelevant to LO.

It would be higher priority and more interesting to know:

does m$ view odp documents correctly?
is any failure due to LO failing to adhere to the odf standard?
is failure due to m$ failing to adhere to the odf standard?

Answering these questions should enable you to send your questions to

Could describing the difference as the newer release has more features
and is undergoing major development while the earlier release is being
concurrently supported and updated for 1 year (whatever the long term
support period is). Allowing users the choice of using the current
release series or beng able to use the older series allowing them to
upgrade at their convenience. This similar to Ubuntu's LTS release, the
LTS is support for 3 years for Ubuntu while the other releases are
 supported for 18 months.

Note Ubuntu is currently using 3.4.3 as yesterday/today, 3.3.4 was
upgraded to 3.4.3 on my box today.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Working on an archive site/pages for LO and the DVD[s] I have been working with

2011-10-09 Thread jorge
Hi

I'll try to contribute with something.

I think that a LTS version of whatever product has to do the job well
(Their main performance for which it was made). In this case, LO
Software, I think that if It makes well all thinks that the Menu expose,
it is a LTS version because it is able to solve users usual needs. What
about bugs. I think that the bugs usually are special features that we
expect of LO, ... In others words, if there is a bug or bugs that
affects the calcs (actions), that we usually hope to do with the Menu,
that bug afffects seriously the version and it can't be LTS.

And I think too that is necesary to support what ever official LTS
version until comes another new LTS version.

I analized this thinking in a company, profesional or student. What
they need ? At least that the software does what it says that it can do
(On the Menu- Its performance).

I think we are growing to point were the issue of long term support
probably needs to be addressed. I think this more an issue with
corporate users rather than home/home office users. Large organizations
dislike having to update very frequently and we need to find the best
balance for them and us. Linux users are probably affected less because
of the distros will provide one of the more recent versions. But Windows
and Mac users need to update manually or in a corporate environment the
IT department will need to roll out the new version/update. Firefox has
received criticism for their rapid versioning from 4 to 7 in the last
 several months from corporate users.

There are several possibilities. We could say every odd or even (3.3 vs
3.4) is the LTS with support for 2 or 3 years and the other is supported
for 1 year for example. We could say every, say third release (3.3 the
3.6) is the LTS with support for the other version. One of the years
releases (3.3, 3.4, and 3.5?) could be designated the LTS. Please note
these are just ideas put out to stimulate thinking and discussion for us
to determine what is best overall for LO and our users.

Obviously, this is not an issue that can be decided without discussing
with others such as the devs before a decision is reached but one that
probably needs to addressing in the near future. The goal is to have a
policy that can be used for planning by us and by users and is
 reasonable for both.

b) If I select the first and run the macro ... appears a mesage that
merge isn't found method.

This macro woud be usefull ... thank you if you help us.

The other method that I know to merge string is this:

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Calc - Merge multiple discontiguous selections at the same time?

2011-10-12 Thread jorge
Hi:

I know that is better using a macro, off course. That was I request to
help us with this macro that you did, because I tried to run and it
failed. Now I tried to run like this:

A1 = jor
A2= ge

B3 = Rodrí
B4 = guez

D2 = Fon
D3 = seca

I selected all ranges and run the macro...the result was:

Merge A1 with A2 but lost ge
Merge B3 with B4 but lost guez
Merge D2 with D3 but lost seca

I thought that merge multiple range macro would bring this:

Merge the content of A1:A2 with B3:B4 and with D2:D3 in other cell, like
this:

D6 = jorgerodriguezfonseca

I expose you all this because I think is a good idea and usefull to get
a macro like this.

Excuse me if I'm abusing of your time and knowledge

Replacing a formula with a macro would be useless. My macro merges
multiple selections of ranges such as A1:B4 D3:D5 E1:G1 as
menu:FormatMerge does with one selected range at a time.

1) With Calc Ooo-Base, use Browser and select one by one all the tables

2) Save the file as .ods
3) Then, in Lo-Base, connect (Browser-spreedshet) from .ods (I think
you can recover the tables.

At least you can recover the tables but you have to do again forms,

I have a Database that I developed several years ago in OO. It runs well

came out I installed this on a second machine and tried to run my DB
with it but with no luck. I have had a tries as new versions of LO
became available but always no luck.

My second machine recently started to give problems so I moved
everything onto the main computer. I now have OO and LO (3.3.4) on the
same machine. It still refuses to run my DB. So I have to have my DB
open with OO and do my other work in LO. I have noticed a lot more
crashes and freezes and other strange behavior since having everything
on one machine. I read on the Forum just a day or so back that it is not
recommended to run both programs at the same time which is no doubt the
 reason I'm seeing problems.

When I open LO Base it opens and shows me all my tables and forms etc.
But when I select 'Forms' to start the program LO just closes. It has
done this since the beginning!! If I do the same steps in OO it works fine!!

How can I transfer my DB to LO or what steps must I take to convert it
to LO format!!??? As I said this has now become a priority for me. If
this can not be done I will have to drop LO and stay with OO which I
 don't want to do.

My OpSys is Linux Mint 10 KDE.

Thanks Guys - I hope at least one of you can supply me with an answer.

  Am I missing something?

Probably not, the MSWorks WPS filter was never perfect and I doubt that
it will be improved. The LibO project is phasing out the former binary

unlikely that any developers are going to be interested in improving the

Sorry to hear that. Many Win7 users may not be able to afford MS Office

for free in most Win7 versions... at least it is in Win7 Home Premium)
is actually quite a nice suite. Were I not a linux user used Win7
outside of testing, and didn't know about OOo/LO, I'd be quite
comfortable using it on a regular basis. Note: I am quite familiar with
 MS Office 2003 and earlier (I have MSO 97, 2002, and 2003).

I think that LO would be making a mistake by not continuing to support
MS Works files (at the the newer versions), at least to properly open
 and display the files.

@John Gregson: I just did a test MS Works (9.0) file with a small table
in it. Four columns, 4 rows. When saved as an .wps the table in LO 3.4.4
 appears as:

 [OBJ][OBJ][OBJ][OBJ]

 Test
 Test1
 ...
 Test17

In other words, the table is not present instead converted to text.
Note: I just filled the table with Test, Test1 etc. No idea what the '
 [OBJ][OBJ][OBJ][OBJ]' bits are about.

I then saved the same file (from MS Works) as a .doc file reopened in
OOo 3.3.0 (table appears fine, albeit outside the page text borders),
and in LO 3.4.4 with the same results as OOo 3.3.0. I'd have to
 uninstall LO 3.4.4 to test with LO 3.3.4, perhaps a Win7 user w/LO 3.3.4
 can test as well?

use Ubuntu, Open Suse or similar flavors of GNU/Linux you can find those
programs in the Install Program repositories.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Write2epub

2012-02-12 Thread jorge
Hi:

I found a program to convert html o xhtml and .txt to epub format.
Its name is eCub an it is a solution about you are talking. For
example, if you make a document in .odt format, then you can select the
export option in File menu and save as html o xhtml and then with
this eCub program you can do it. I did an example and it was good (But
it was made with a simple document and I don't know how is going on with
a complex document)

You can find it here:

http://www.juliansmart.com/ecub

It is able for GNU/Linux, Mac and Windows

 Dear all of you,
First an opinion - correct me if wrong!
I've got the idea that this is kind of a help-desk where every LibreO
user can both ask for help and give info about problems related to
LibreO's components. Without any bad feelings afterwards!
Referring to the irrelevant debates recently and also my own
experiences some weeks ago I would say that a real expert has the
ability to concentrate on the question as-it-is and give a relevant
answer -- he has knowledge enough to understand that there are no silly
 or wrong questions.
Every question has its reason - and every question is valuable because
it indicates that there may be something to repair or do better in LibreO.
There is a truth in quality systems (e.g. ISO 9000): without
identifying the weaknesses there is no development.

_And now to my contribution to make LibreO better:_
I need to calculate in LO-Base the difference between an 'olddate' and
today expressed in whole years (no decimals)
The main procedure seems to be the same in LO-Base and OOo as in MSAccess.
The function I placed in the query field is (ref. also to guides in LO
 OOo):
  datediff('year',table1.olddate,current_date) or
 datediff('year',olddate,current_date)

When I inserted my birthdate (2.11.1939) in 'olddate' my computer states
 that I am 73 - I'm NOT, I'm still only 72!
The correct result is 72,225 years; and the desired answer without
 decimals 72.
I got the same wrong result (73) both in LO-Base and in OOo-Base
the wrong result is not logical - it can not be a rounding up, nor
is it a result of an 'int()'-function
if I replaced 'year' with 'dd' or 'mm' or 'yy' the function works
 -- but
when replaced 'year' with '' the function stopped working (why -
'year' and '' ought to be equal!)
the query field does not accept the expression int(datediff(..etc))
the date-format is equal (finnish - see above) in every relevant field
  my OS is Windows7Professional/32Bit

I also tried the formula /year(current_date - olddate)/ but the query
did not accept it as a valid expression - can I put that formula
 anywhere else?

Anyone there who can tell me how I shall get the LO-Base to be honest?
 Regards
 Pertti Rönnberg

[libreoffice-users] How to remove options from the Save As list (Writer)

2011-06-01 Thread jorge
I think that you have to use the simple Save option and the document
will save with the format that you are using.

The first time it put a message that says that it isn't save and when
you click ok, it go to save option. At this time you have to select the
format that you want to use for it.

For the rest time that you use the simple Save option, it save as it
was save the first time. Whe you chose .doc, it put a message if you
want to keep the format o change ... but it has a chek box to select it
won't appear again.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Chart data

2014-07-23 Thread jorge
Hi:

I could suggest you to select a greatter range than you are going to use
at the begining. For example. Imagine you need make a chart with the
information of all the months of the year but at this moment you have
only seven mounth, like this:

Row A B

1 J 10
2 F 20
3 M 30
4 A 40
5 My 40
6 J 50
7 Jy 60

But you expect five additional months:

Row A B

8 A ? (Keep in blank)
9 S ? (Keep in blank)
10 O ? (Keep in blank)
11 N ? (Keep in blank)
12 D ? (Keep in blank)

When you select the initial range you can select:

A1:B12 as complete series

In this case the chart only show elements graphics for months that have
numbers...the others only by referens...but if you dont want show these
in the chart you can hide its part of range-rows-(Partial or Total), and
the chart adjusts automatically its range.

I hope this help you to make your chart better and easier,

Re: [libreoffice-users] Intermittent Calc Issues

 Hi,

I haven't been on this users group for over two years, primarily
because everything worked great, until now. I have an inconsistent and
not often issue with Calc. Well, it's more annoying than anything else,
because I can easily correct it, but it shouldn't be. Calc does weird
things now and then. I was creating an elaborate spreadsheet file
consisting of 13 worksheets to record my wife's and mine different Roth
and Traditional IRAs vested in Mutual Funds. Each worksheet shows the
DATE, transaction DESCRIPTION, DEBIT, CREDIT, share PRICE, SHAREs
obtained, share BALANCE, $ AMOUNT (share PRICE * share BALANCE),
percentage of gain or loss both yearly and per investment, all in
separate columns. Sometimes, I complete a calculation in a cell, and
press the Enter or Down Arrow key. My calculation will disappear and a
;6 will appear in the cell. Or I may randomly highlight a cell to check
a formula, then when I press a directional arrow, my calculation will
disappear and a : will reside in that cell. Sometimes, I'll just move
an arrow key, or the mouse to move from one cell to another and wherever
I move will highlight as if I was holding down the Shift key.

As I said, these issues are very inconsistent. They may not happen
for days, then after a few days, they may happen several times, then
intermittent, or not at all. This all started in early July. I ran
anti-malware scanners, anti-virus scanners, cleaned the registry, and
defragged. I changed different versions of LibreOffice (vs 4). I have
 LO 4.3.0, 4.2.5, 4.2.2, 4.1.4, 4.1.3, 4.1.2, and 4.0.3 (which I am
currently using). I still had the same issues with whichever version used.

I discussed the issues and history with another tech and he
reasoned (the same as I) that LO was having memory conflict issues with
one or more simultaneous running programs. I have installed some new
software, some with start up files. Those software programs were not
really all that important, so I deleted them, the registry entries, and
any start up files. However, the IRA spreadsheet file is all done, and
I don't know if I'll still have those issue until I start another
 spreadsheet project.

This is all done on an HP Probook 440 G1 14 notebook with a Jan

My questions are: Has anyone else experienced the same? Does my
 reasoning sound feasible? Any ideas?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice Still?

2014-08-06 Thread jorge
Hi, good night all:

As I understand there are some official versions. I think that could be
better that The Document Foundation only has one version for all
languages for production and makes its firsts efforts to solve all the
most important bugs (This would be by user and programmer votes) before
to start a new version.

In this way The Document Foundation assures to step up when the before
version is really OK ! for all and production.

I think is better go more slowly but complete all important issues of
the official version than growing fast fast fast but would be with
disorders. And in this time as I know the version of production even has
bugs stand by to be solve.

This words are because I appreciate so much the all efforts for get the
best for Libre Office but some times when we don`t focus in the same we
would loss some of them.

Jorge Rodríguez

The fresh branch is stable enough for everyone to use. LibreOffice
does not pilot planes, it does not usually crash, it does the job.
There are people who want newer features and people who want more
tested versions. There's food for everyone.

Yes, there is, and no one is saying any different. In fact, I am saying
that there are people who want both, and so *both* should be offered.
But by your own admission, one of those branches is more stable. The
difference might be slight, but it is enough for the people behind LO
to continue to offer it when the newer, more featureful branch is also
  being offered.

So for me first prize would be to have both branches as equal downloads
on the LO download page. With a clear, concise explanation of what each
offers, and a link to a slightly longer, fuller explanation. That is
exactly what I am proposing should be done.

But barring that, if LO wants to keep a single download as the primary
download, as it currently is, then I am firm in my belief that the
primary download should not be the less stable branch, but should
instead be the more stable branch.

More experienced users will know where to look for the version they
require, but it is my belief that new users, the kind that will simply
click on the big shiny download button, prefer stability over features.
In the case of an office suite like LO, how much of the new features do
they even use? Of course people want new features, I just think that
new users would prefer stability, or even better yet, a clearly
explained choice, rather than features at the expense of stability. If
you have statistics to show otherwise, I'm sure you would have
presented them by now. If you disagree, that is of course fine, but it
remains purely our individual opinions until someone presents some
pertinent facts. Although as far as I can tell from the responses, it
seems most people here agree with me, so if I were the marketing team, I
  would give it careful consideration.

Now: if you have ideas for new names, etc. you are welcome to
   contribute to our marketing team.

Well, this particular discussion was about how the downloads are
presented, not about the names for each branch, and I have already made
my opinions on the branch names clear, but I will reiterate them here
  for clarity:

  Still should be Stable

Fresh *can* stay the same, but should rather be Current or
  Development

Feel free to pass that on to the marketing team. I don't think I will
be joining another mailing list, one with an agenda that I am largely
not interested in, just to contribute that. This discussion was opened
here, and I contributed my opinions; I am happy leaving it at that. I'm
sure the right people are aware of this discussion, or, if not, that
someone who is on both lists will pass along our sentiments.

Berlin, January 12, 2015 - The Document Foundation (TDF) announces that

third largest in Germany - has launched Project LiMux to migrate their
software systems from closed-source, proprietary products to free and
open-source software. The project was successfully completed in late
2013, which involved migrating 16,000 personal computers and laptops of
public employees to free and open-source software. The City of Munich
has hosted a LibreOffice HackFest since 2011, to improve features
  targeted to enterprise environments.

The city of Munich is a healthy reference for every migration to free
software, and as such will add a significant value to our Advisory
Board, where it will seat side by side with MIMO, representing the
migration to LibreOffice of French Ministries, and with other companies
providing value added services on top of LibreOffice, says Thorsten
Behrens, Chairman of The Document Foundation. Doctor Florian Haftmann
will be introduced to other members of TDF Advisory Board during next
planned meeting, on January 15, 2015.

TDF Advisory Board has 17 members: AMD, CIB Software, City of Munich,
CloudOn, Collabora, FrODeV (Freies Office Deutschland), FSF (Free
Software Foundation), Google, Intel, ITOMIG, KACST (King Abdulaziz City
of Science and Technology of Saudi Arabia), Lanedo, MIMO (Consortium of
French Ministries), RedHat, SPI (Software in the Public Interest),
  Studio Storti and SUSE.

About the City of Munich and Project LiMux

Munich, Bavaria’s capital, between 2005 and 2013 has successfully
managed to migrate around 16,000 PCs in 11 business units and 4
municipal undertakings to an open source based, standard and stable
operating system. Munich is the largest public-sector open source stake
holder in Germany, and Project LiMux has always had a high visibility.

Project LiMux has been able to reduce in a significant way the
dependence from legacy proprietary software products, and attain - in
the long term - the desired flexibility of software and architecture,
  based on three fundamental decisions:

  - Introduce a free and open source operating system, with office
  communications based on open standards for all workstations;

  - To acquire or develop platform independent administrative procedures;

  - To use a standardised IT platform with consolidated applications and
  databases.

In such a scenario, a suitable desktop office suite is a strategic core
product. In the beginning, LiMux has started to deploy OpenOffice.org,
but by now the reference office suite is LibreOffice.

Until recently (two weeks ago), LO was able to open it in a second or
two, and I was able to work with it normally (adding columns, sorting etc).

Suddenly everything has changed - loading takes about 10 minutes and
then no work is possible, since the response is horribly slow. I have
several versions of LO installed and I am sure that the 4.3 an 4.4.0
 versions were OK.
Recently, I have upgraded 4.4.0 to 4.4.1 and installed 4.5 alpha. What
surprises me is that also 4.3 is slow now and removing of 4.4.1 and 4.5
 does not change the situation.

I am using Ubuntu 14.10. I suspect that the problem is somewhere outside
 LO.
A version of the document without the hyperlink loads instantly, so the
 problem resides in them

 Do you have any idea?

 Thank in advance

I've modified the first suggestion of WhiteBoard design for Libre
Office 5.0. I include the thumbnail as Stuart request, and licence and
description of artwork:

 Thank you for submitting.

I've uploaded your proposed StartCenter mockup to the Wiki--please log-in
there (create an account if you do not already have one) and adjust the
licensing and description for your artwork.

 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Whiteboards/5.0_Branding

Also, please consider that in your mockup, you appear to have eliminated the
thumbnail view of recently used documents. That is a critical design element
that can not be removed. So, your design needs additional work.

You'll need to rework your mockup to show where thumbnail views and
 templates would be presented.

Re: [libreoffice-users] [OT] Operating Environment Survey

2015-07-21 Thread jorge
My remembers and my present:

My first contact with a computer was with a main fraime (That all I
know and remember of my first job).

My second time was with a Unisys system that has a supply system to
help my job. A very old kind of terminal.

My third contact was my first time with windows (I don't know what was
it), but was when I learn lotus-123 as a spreedsheet. My third job.

In my four job I used As-400 for Account System, Unisys for the rest of
system of the bank. And again, windows where I learn Office include
Access (W-95 and its office with the best Access that I've known. Then
go down).

Here I bought my first personal computer (A clon). With windows and
office with out access.

In my last three jobs I used w7 and office and introduce to my self use
OpenOffice and LibreOffice and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

My actual personal computer has Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with dual boot with w7
for very especific situations. Both with LibreOffice and the second with
OpenOffice too. The laptop has Ubuntu 15.04 LTS with LibreOffice and the
tablet use Android with Android Open Office and WPS (Kingsoft Office)
and others that I don't rememeber now very well.

I hope not tired you with my computer's part of my live.

Jorge Rodríguez

My first home computer was a BBC micro (anyone remember those?) That was back
in the days when programming had to be really tight, only had 32Kb (yes, Kb)
of RAM; long term storage was all external on cassette tapes, eventually
upgraded to floppy disk drive (and the disks really were floppy). I've still
got that computer and AFAIK it still works!
My next machine was Acorn Archimedes, followed by RISC PC. It's a great shame
that the marketing for those machines was so poor, leading to collapse of the
company. The ARM chips had a great architecture and instruction set.
After that, I got my first laptop, a Sony Vaio running windows XP. When I
upgraded, which I was forced to do due to a machine failure, I got a laptop
running Windows 7 - which is still my current machine. A better Windows, once
I'd got used to it, but it had a real downer - couldn't get driver for my
flatbed scanner - Canon didn't produce one.
 At work, in my first job I used a computer called a PDP 11 (ghastly thing);
can't remember what the OS was called.
In my second job I think we started off with some sort of mainframe, the
details of which are hazy now. Later we migrated to Sun Spark workstations.
In my last real job, used PCs running windows, I think it was XP at that time.
Now in my office based voluntary work I use PCs with Windows 7. Did have a
play with Win 8 on a laptop, but hated it. It might be OK for tablets, I
don't know, but it was horrible to use with normal PC input devices.
I have thought about upgrading to Linux but have never got around to it. This
is mainly because of familiarity with certain software packages, especially
Photoshop. I know there is GIMP for Linux, but it's not a patch - for one
thing, it doesn't have the concept of adjustment layers; and that means that
all my working files, which tend to be saved as TIFF with layer compression,
can't be properly loaded and edited in GIMP.I also make use of a video editor
(not free but fairly inexpensive) which can edit MPEG2 files without
reencoding unchanged parts of the video, which makes it quite fast and
doesn't lose quality. Something like that probably does exist for Linux but I
haven't got around to looking, and familiarity is a big part of the
story.Another thing is the convenience of plug and play when it comes to
hardware - I don't think I've ever had to manually load a driver, everything
seems to work out of the box and that's a very good thing, saves a lot of
time and effort. I'm not sure what Linux is like in that respect, as I've had
 no experience.
On my phone I have android and I tend to get on reasonably well with that.
I'm not sure what I will do if I ever need to change computer again.
 /Gary

The syntax would be =A1, I think.

I tried with formulas but didn't succeed. it seems that they treat
 only numbers...

 It seems so.

 any suggestion?

Yes: create what you need in a spreadsheet and copy and paste the
required cell range into your text document. It will appear as a
table but will function like the spreadsheet section that it is.

 I trust this helps.

Hi Tim and all:

Thank you for this information about LibreOffice. By the way, as I know
this is the link to Ubuntu Mate:

And if you want you can install Ubuntu with Unity but installing Mate
desktop from its repositories (At least I did with Ubuntu 15.04 in one
of my systems)
