There is a way to disable Gatekeeper from the terminal. I had sent a reply with
a link to an article describing how to do it - one command line adds the option
to use apps from any source as before Sierra.

I think it was in Plante's & Driscoll's thread. Obviously it's not a
recommended course of action.

The legacy version of Java can be downloaded from Apple:

The database portion of AOO and the mailmerge functions require Java. It is best to install the

The Apple support article linked to hasn't been updated for Sierra. The option "Anywhere –
Allow applications to run regardless of their source on the Internet (default in OS X Lion
v10.7.5); Gatekeeper is effectively turned off. Note: Developer ID-signed apps that have been
inappropriately altered will not open, even with this option selected." has been removed in Sierra.

The rest of the article is valid, especially the Right click option which is the easiest way to
activate non-signed applications on macOS.

You can sell all your Mac stuff if you want, but you’ll be shooting yourself in
the foot if you do. Most problems have solutions. Many solutions require a
limited amount of work and/or study. If you go with Windows stuff, you’ll have
a lot of problems, but there are lots of people who’ll give you solutions. You
will come to know them well. If you go with Linux, you’ll have to do a lot more
studying, and learn some new cuss words. But it works, and it’s not Apple.

Good luck to you.  BTW, what are you asking for the new Mac Pro?

Andrea,
The release note refers to an article in the Apple Knowledge Base that was
written for systems up to and including El Capitain (MacOS 10.11). In Sierra
(MacOS 10.12) the procedure is as I described and as chuck ef expanded on,
i.e., how to kill Gatekeeper permanently (not recommended).

What I posted is current, and was taken point-by-point as I installed AOO on my
iMac and Sierra.

You may copy and edit my post and use it to amend the release notes if you like.

Re: New Open Office Apache program

2016-10-15 Thread chuck ef
Well, I downloaded 4.1.3 this morning, and aside from the usual Gatekeeper
issue, it opens and I am in business with my (much used) budget spreadsheet
again.

So there is no real new issue with Gatekeeper in macOS unless you want the
option of allowing it to open anything from anywhere all the time (not
recommended). Then you will need to do the terminal thing described in the link
below.

My word, 4.1.3 opens quickly now. 4.1.2 was such a slug for some reason.

I have not tried to instal 4.1.3 yet but apparently Apple did make changes to
Gatekeeper due to vulnerabilities found last year - I am echoing what I just
Googled. You might do the same.

I did find this among many other things:

I need help. This time Apple will not help.

Any recommendations on computers because I am selling all my Apple iPhones, my

songs in a transfer from iPhone 5 to iPhone 6s. They did this transfer at the
store with no backup. So it was Apples software that dumped the songs. Apple
can now be described as Sub Rosa Crooks.
