so..." macht (machen sollten).

Diverse Programme

Mein Open Office Writer stürzt sehr oft ab.

Problems With Apache Open Office Writer

2020-10-04 Thread Sid Myers
Dear Sirs:
I was working with Apache Open Office Writer. Here's what I did. I was
gathering some notes on a subject that involved attempting to copy an image
to the document.
I copied the image (an image of a plat of land on a map of DeSoto Parish in
Louisiana). Immediately upon doing so a blue circle began to spin as if it
working to download the image which is normal. However, it was taking a lot
of time so I had some other things to do and when I returned to my computer
there were pages and pages of letters ... and numbers .. lots of them. When
I attempted to delete them Open Office Writer froze up. I restarted my
computer several times. Of course, each time document did recover (going
thru the recover process) .. BUT .. it did it over and over again.
So, I not very tech-savvy but somehow I corrupted the software I guess. ..
What do I do now?
Plus, I thought about uninstalling Open Office.. but then I thought .. hmmm
I might lose all of my other Open Office Writers files.
So, I did not want to do anything before contacting you first.
Please tell me what to do.

Respectfully,
Sid Myers ..

Do not junk your old computer until any old documents you require have been
transferred to e new. If in doubt, seek help to do this. OpenOffice is not a
cloud application and the documents reside on the old computer only.

Hi David,

If you provide a bit more information we may be able to help you.
How are you trying to access your documents?
Are you double clicking on a file name expecting something to happen?
Are you opening Writer and using the main menu "File -> Open" Option?
When you try and access your documents, do any messages appear on your

These steps will make Wordpad open this file and any other Wordpad file

The above steps were written using Windows 10 as reference. Steps 1 & 2 are

Regardless, the requirement is the same. Change the program that opens the

Two notes:
If/when you install OpenOffice again be mindful during the install for the

Uninstall Writer is not necessary. Very little disk space is recovered by
doing so and having it installed is not the root cause of the problem.

Apache Open Office is works program. This means that Calc, Writer,
Draw, Impress, and Math are built into it, and removing one component
would remove functionality from all components.

> It is invasive. It has swallowed word pad. I like working with word pad.

If Apache Open Office opens files that you would prefer to have opened
by WordPad, then reconfigure the operating system to do that.

> Can you also tell me why it is so damn hard to get through to you people?

Apache Open Office offers official support via a web forum
(https://forum.openoffice.org) and a mailing list (
users@openoffice.apache.org). Support via IRC, Telegram, and similar
channels of communication is available, albeit as unofficial support.
These are the standard Tier Zero support channels.

> Just stick some people on the phone and let them ( the experts) direct an

If you want phone support, then you need to purchase phone support from
a third party vendor. A list of vendors providing professional support
can be found at https://www.openoffice.org/bizdev/consultants.html

Phone support is a Tier One support channel, which, for most products
and services, requires one to specifically purchase.

Everything I do is taken over by writer. Then it is useless.

No you can't delete the writer application from the office.
I'm not sure what you mean by "grabbed" by Writer.  I'm going to make an
assumption that you mean when you double-click on a file in your file
manager that it is opened by Writer instead of your preferred
application.  This is a function of your operating system that decides
which app is used to open a file type.
You haven't mentioned what operating system and version you are using so
I can't give you specific instructions on this OS setting.

To do anything with a file, I must copy, then delete the empty writer file.
Post the file to Wordpad. Make the changes and save.
When I go back to the file, everything is changed.

Do you mean the Wordpad file is different than you saved it?

/View /Zoom and choose 100% to start with, or /View /Status bar (if bottom bar

Best not to allow any need for file recovery. OpenOffice file format is
complex and takes a little longer to generate than a flat file. Do not allow a
computer to sleep with an OO file open. Close your file, then OpenOffice. When
shutting down computer, wait for disk activity to cease before closing laptop
lid or powering off a desktop, this was necessary with conventional hard disk
drives which internally buffered the data and the time (a few seconds) was
necessary to permit the internal buffers to flush to disk before the power was
cut. It may not be necessary, or as necessary, with SSD drives. But I'm old
fashioned, and always close down leisurely.

Your file is corrupt, possibly damaged due to over-hasty power-off of computer
or closure of laptop lid, before the OO housekeeping has been written to disk.

Try the methods in this tutorial
See https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=71=85038 for
detailed instructions on how to

a) use Previous Versions (W7 and later) to recover previous versions of the file

b) recover your file as it was when you last opened or saved it, or as it was
when it was last saved with AutoRecovery;

c) find previous versions of the file in the folder it is located in, but which
have since been deleted;

d) un-delete the temporary files AOO wrote while you were editing the file, and
then deleted. This will recover your file as it was when you last opened or
you last saved it.

It's perhaps worth repeating that this facility - useful though it is
and wise indeed are the users who make use of it - does not "save
your document" in the normal sense of those words: that is, replace
the existing document file on disk with updated versions as you edit.
That is achieved only by occasional use of File | Save (or Ctrl+S).
Instead, what it does is to salt away information that can be used
later to recover your session up to the last automatic action, but
*only* in the event of some less than gracious termination of the
editing session: perhaps a program crash or power outage. If a
session is terminated normally - by closing the document or the
program, with or without saving - then the recovery information is
deleted and no longer available.

Oh, and it's no help to the original questioner, who didn't have any
sort of crash but said she mistakenly clicked Discard when closing a
modified document.

You are not subscribed to the list. You may miss replies. See

am unable to follow up with personal conversations (i.e., please reply
to the list if you reply).

I think we already support most of your requests. There is a keyboard
shortcut for the spell-checker (F7 but may depend on language) and the
Menu key triggers the local menu for adding/ignoring etc.

2. If the spell check facility is improved to allow inclusion of external
text files as reference files for spell check then one can have his own
custom built spell check file that will eventually result in lesser and
lesser time being spent on spell check. In 4.1.7 (En-US) "Writer" I could
not find the path to the spell check file like custom.dic of Word 2000.

We support custom dictionaries, just I'm not sure they are in the form
of text files. You add to these dictionaries from the interface. See
documentation (press F1) for more.

3. Macro facility of Word 2000 does not allow external txt files to
attached in a VB project thereby limits the spell check correction and it
cannot be increased to several thousands of corrections. I get an error on
an Lenovo I3 L412 after the vb code length increases more than 2200 words
per file and has therefore resulted in entering about 45 files to the spell
check macro whenever I format the device. Generally format of the device is
to be done after about a month. The OS being used is Win XP sp2.

I don't see a need for using a macro for this task.

4. I have not been able to use the available "Autocorrect" facility on the
spell check popup window. My suggestion would be to use this tab
exclusively for the user to have his own spell check system:
a) a few attachable, modifiable and increasable txt dict reference files.
b) a macro facilitation that is able to correct a few thousand already
corrected and recorded strings/ string sequences (an ocr text can present
even a simple word as: "Pres-ident" "butthe" "isan" etc.
c) Auto text entries that are too frequently needed to be corrected.

The autocorrect works mostly the way you describe, with the exception
that it is not based on text files (so you need to manage it through the
UI) and that you setup it manually in the preferences (not in the popup).

Regards,
  Andrea.

Well, yes and no.

The hidden file in the document file's folder with a name that "would
likely start with the ~ character and end with #" (there's no
"likely" about it, and it starts with ".~", in fact) is a lock file
and does not contain the document's text or any part of it. It won't
help anyone if they find it.

 Check this out:

1) Tools > Options > Openoffice[] > Load/Save > General. (Select
these one at a time to browse to where you can make changes in making backups.)

2) I check Autorecovery and reduce the number of minutes to 5. With
this, information about my document is saved every 5 minutes. These
are saved in the backup folder every 5 minutes. If there is a
problem like you had, I can open the latest one of these files and
continue from that point.

This may be good general advice (it is), but - as Alan Bonly says -
it is useful only after failures such as a program crash or power
outage, when the program terminates other than gracefully. This won't
help the questioner, who had a different problem, when she mistakenly
clicked Discard when closing her document. The only possibility here,
I think, is if an automatic back-up facility - such as Windows' File
History - happened to catch the recovery copy in the "backup" folder
during the editing session and before it was deleted.

Hi Calvin,

Please note that attachments are removed from posts to this list, which
means that most subscribers will not see your capture.

I can see your image and my guess is that you have a number of pages
(not spreadsheets) in the document and you have somehow inadvertently
switched from single page view into book view and your window zoom has
remained at 100%.

The simple solution is to click on the left hand icon of the 3 icons in
the bottom right hand corner of the Writer window. I am attaching an
extract from your screen capture illustrating the window area.

You have already been told on Forum
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7=92231

that your file is damaged beyond repair and advised of methods of possible
recovery of backups, which methods should have been applied as soon as possible.

I doubt at this stage that there will be anything left to recover.

Your file has most probably been damaged because of over-hasty close down of
your computer, before internal housekeeping was complete and written to disk.

Open Office Writer issue-fuzziness!

2017-12-29 Thread Don Minow

For many years I have been a user of the NeoOffice suite of applications and
have been satisfied with their performance and operation.

I purchased a new iMac desktop this summer and have noted some
incompatibilities with it and NeoOffice. I downloaded Apache Open Office
version 4.1.4 and now use it as my everyday application for text and
spreadsheets. The iMac is using IO S version 10.13.2/High Sierra
.

However, I have an open issue with OpenOffice Writer. When I enter data, after
a few seconds the screen text becomes “fuzzy”, obscured and hard to read. In
addition, I note numerous dim triangles in the margins and body of the screen
text. I can clear the "fuzzyness" by 'Selecting All'; the text becomes comes
clear and legible. However, the "fuzziness" returns after a few seconds.

I have searched the Open Office help screens and a early version of the users
manual but I cannot find any reference to the cause and correction method to
eliminate the fuzziness.

Thanks in advance for your help.

No it's not a coincident that the replies look like carbon copies, it's

WOW! Are we defensive or what?

Well, you started to use the word Critique in the subject.
According to the dictionary this word means "the art of criticism" and
criticism is "a severe or unfavorable judgement".
At the beginning of your email you start with "it is annoying and seems
a bit arrogant" etc.

You are writing to a user mailing list, these users are voluntarily
helping others. We are not programmers or developers
so all we can do is giving advice or workarounds all within the
limitations of our own knowledge.
If you had started your email with explaining your problem instead of
your frustration you probably had received a different answer.

Regarding the browser, maybe it isn't "yours", but it opened when I
clicked on the email link in Open Office help, it looks like a
browser, I had never seen that interface before, no program name was
discoverable that I know of, and I coud not figure a way to get that
communication back to a familiar environment. It had all the feel of
my having been hijacked to a proprietary application. And the only way
I have been able to get that UI back is to execute a link from within
the Open Office Help environment. Maybe it isn't part of Open Office,
but something in Open office is calling it, none of my other
applications call that interface, and I haven't found any other way of
getting to it except through the Open Office Help routine. I don't
know what it is, but it looks like an Open office thing to me.

Now, regarding my error in sending this message to all of you, I
simply followed a link within that Help routine that was labelled to
provide feedback. If that isn't the appropriate way to do that, then
for Pete's sake somebody change that link. And in the meantime, don't
jump down somebody's throat for doing what they thought they were
supposed to do.

Regarding the thrust of my feedback, both of you completely ignore or
turn totally inside out the explanation of what I presented. I have
read and reread my original words, and your interpretations of that
take some real imagination. I don't know how I could have made it much
more clear what I expected it to do and what it does instead, but that
is worlds away from the mayhem you tow throw back at me. I will repeat
here this part of what I said earlier: I can't image any use for what
it actually does. Your descriptions are like from a different planet,
introducing issues that are completely irrelevant as far as I can
tell, and you made no effort to explain how they might relate.

Both of you assert that Open Office isn't and never was intended to be
a clone of MS. I never suggested that it is or should be. I simply
pointed out that a nearly identically named function in MS does do
what the name implies, and OO does not. Furthermore, everybody knows
that your assertion is a half truth at best. The developers of OO have
striven to make the transition between the two as easy on the user as
possible and tried to eliminate as many hurdles as possible for
persons making the move to OO. I am a pretty intense user of
spreadsheets, and I have used both Excel and Calc extensively. Calc is
an exact clone of Excel in almost every way. The only difference that
I can think of at the moment is the use of a semicolon for a parameter
separator rather than the comma that Excel uses. I don't quite get why
that difference exists, unless for copyright reasons. I don't have any
particular grief with the similarly, although Gates might. I think it
is wise on your part. Even the existence of that very function looks
very suspiciously like an effort to emulate MS. It just doesn't work
the same.

One of you also repeatedly questioned why I don't just use MS if I
like it better. There are two fallacies in that argument. Firstly, I
didn't say that I liked MS better. I simple offered this one function
that I like better in that package and plead for inclusion of that in
OO. I had the impression until I actually tried it that OO wanted
suggestions from their users about things they liked and disliked.
Apparently that is a ruse. Secondly, most users don't have a choice
which of the two to use. Employers supply a computer and software, and
employees are pretty much relegated to whatever that is, whether they
like it or not. Your reaction is like me going into Sears and asking
if they carry Michelin tires, and the clerk yelling "No, we don't
carry Michelin tires, and if you don't like the tires we sell, then go
to Walmart!" That would be just as ludicrous as your responses. A wise
clerk would say something like, " I'm sorry sir, but we don't carry
Michelin. They make a pretty good tire, and they

I don't know what you are referring to. I don't have any errors that I know
of, and that has nothing to do with the topic. The issue is that I cannot
figure out how to do what this function name implies it does but does not.

I don't disagree with your jist. I simple clicked on the link for feedback
and provided some. I only referenced MS because I have some experience with
that through a past employer, and it seems to function as I suspect this
was supposed to. But apparently that link was just in fun, because I have
been barraged with emails telling me that I should not have sent it, some
of them extremely demeaning and even vulgar.

Open Office Writer Critique

2017-06-17 Thread Dayvid Artman
First of all, it is annoying and seems a bit arrogant to force me to open
my email in your browser to send this message when I already have my email
open in a different browser. I also don't like the fact that said browser
removes (or at least hides from me) my signature stored in the email
service. But those are not the reason for the message.

You have a function for working with tables that seems to have no useful
purpose, but the title given to it would be quite useful, and there doesn't
seem to be any way to actually do what the name of the function implies.
Microsoft Word has a function with nearly the exact same name, and it
functions as the name suggests and is very handy.

The function in question is “Distribute Rows Equally”, and it is found
under the “Table” menu in the “Autofit” sub-menu. I read the Help on that
topic, and it functions exactly as described, but for no benefit that I can
imagine. The similar “Distribute Columns Evenly” operates nearly identical,
different only in that it is limited by the page size, while rows are not.

What the function does in make every column (or row) match the largest one
in the selection. I can do that in several different ways without using
this function, and the name does not suggest that such will be the outcome.
It isn't “distributing” anything, it is simply expanding each row to the
size of the largest. What I want to do (and what the name implies what and
Microsoft does) is distribute the rows equally or evenly within the area of
the rows selected. The final table would occupy no more, no less, but
exactly the same space as the original, but the spacing of the rows would
all be the same.

This supports providing as much space or as large a font as practical while
keeping a consistent look and staying (for example) on one page. There is
no easy way to do this that I know of without a command such as this. I
must somehow measure the total space that I want the finished table to
occupy, then manually divide that by the number of rows I want, and then
size each one to that size. Given certain scenarios, one could do that last
step en mass, but the first two steps are cumbersome and tedious. The
computer could do that in a moment, just as quickly as it does what it does
now, but with far more benefit.

I strongly urge the team at Apache to consider making this design change.

Re: Problems with File Formatting and Document Display on Open Office Writer

to open the documents, they are displayed as an unknown file type
with the unknown file icon (the white box with three squares). Every
time I save a document now, even previous documents that have been
saved as Word 97/00/XP documents, they are converted to unknown file
types every time I go back into OpenOffice.

You may well imagine that the icon you see outside OpenOffice -
provided by your operating system - shows the format in which any
document file has been saved. But this is not true. Instead, the
choice of icon will be based on the application that your operating
system would use to open the file by default if you double-click it.
In most cases this depends only on the extension to the file name,
not on any property of the document file itself.

So what is likely is that your saved files are indeed in your chosen
format but that they lack the .doc extension to indicate this to your
operating system. You can test this by starting OpenOffice first and
then using File | Open ... (or the Open... button in the start
screen) to browse to and open the files - which you should find works
normally, as this does not rely on your operating system's default settings.

OpenOffice has a strange option in the Save As... dialogue box. Near
the bottom, you will see an "Automatic file name extension" tick box.
Has this become unticked? If it has, you will be saving documents in
the correct format, but the file names will not be getting the proper
extension. So a document will be called just "name" rather than
"name.doc". If you replace the tick, it will stick for further saves.

You can deal with existing rogue files either by opening them as
above and then saving them with the appropriate extension (once you
have replaced the tick) or else by using your operating system's
facilities to rename the files, adding the extension manually.

I also had difficulty with the formatting of a Word document that I
opened in OpenOffice. When I opened the file, the formatting had
been thrown around and text boxes were moved and had a strange red
arrow in the right-had corner. I have never known of this problem
before - could it be due to a virus?

No. First, there will always be differences when you open documents
in foreign formats or prepared by other application software. Indeed,
there will be differences even without these changes if you have a
different operating system, version of the application software,
default printer, paper size, installed fonts, and so on. For best
results, once you have formatted a document as you wish, save it in
OpenOffice's native Open Document Format formats - .odt etc. - for
later further use.

The red arrow just indicates that there is more text in the table
cell than can be displayed at the current font, size, or other
settings, I think. Enlarge the table cell or change the character
formatting to see the rest of the contents.

I trust this helps.

Bill,

When Stardivision Gmbh, a German software firm headed by Marco
Boerries started making its StarOffice suite available across
different PC and Mac platforms, they quickly realized they needed to
support several operating systems at once with little reprogramming
and visual differences (for the user). So they ended up creating a set
of graphical components for "StarOffice" that looked the same and
worked across the several supported operating systems (back then,
Windows, Unix, OS/2, etc). They called that "framework as "StarView"
(1)

Then came Sun Microsystems which bought Stardivision and created Sun
StarOffice and OpenOffice.org opening up the source code. It included
further cross-platform abilities like separation of the different apps
that make the "offic suite" into components (2).

Then Oracle bought Sun and then after a revolt by a group of external
programmers, Oracle decided to hand over OpenOffice.org to the Apache
Software Foundation.

All the above is to say: the cross-platform fundamentals remain the
same on today's AOO. It has and continues to look and behave the same
no matter what OS you use. There is little if any retraining to be
done when moving across AOO running on different operating systems.

The programs should work and behave the same no matter what the
underlying operating system youu are using.

Is there a forum Moderator who uses OO Writer with OS X?

I, and several other volunteers, use AOO Writer with OS X

I have submitted a problem to the forum, but all the response I get is from
people using OO Writer on Windows and they cannot understand the problem.

You could have stated the problem you were having. I searched the forums and
found your posts.

A link to a bug report was given. Also you stated you were using AOO with Windows 10 under
Parallels. There is a Mac OS X native version of AOO. No need to run under Parallels.

I have been using AOO (and its predecessor OOo) on Macs for 10 years and have never had the
problem you described.

I've used Apache Open Office Writer on Ubuntu and since 2013 on OSX and
have had no problems. I just make sure to save as ms .doc for
compatibility when sharing with others.

There are Volunteers on the Forum who use OS X; they may be online later.
Remember that he Forum is manned by volunteers who give of their knowledge in
their own time; the demands of Real Life may limit their involvement.

Open Office Writer öffnet keine Text Dateien

2016-07-11 Thread Hagen KOERBEL

Hagen Koerbel

And this, I suspect, was the whole purpose of this thread.

Shame. Get over it LO freedom fighters, some of us are never gonna

OpenOffice is still being developed. Quit spreading this FUD. How much is LibreOffice paying

I shouldn't have to delete a profile and re-create it and go through that

Open office need to fix this MAJOR problem.

Of course this is a big problem, but OpenOffice is no longer actively
developed. You should switch to LibreOffice, they fixed that extensions bug
2 years ago.

Re: Open Office Writer UTTER , UTTER Rubbish (or not)

2016-03-14 Thread Kay Schenk
Apache OpenOffice does indeed have a perfectly functional
spell checker. And, of course, we are aware of the problems
for some users/systems with the spell checker on upgrades.
We have recently had a patch submitted and tested to correct
this problem. See the following BZ entry:

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126762

Hopefully, when 4.2 is released, the problem will be solved.
