If you have updated recently the Open Office,  then there is the problem..
There is an issue, a bug,  that appears , and they guide you to look all your
computer to delete your personal Open Office settings, so to blank them and
make a new configuration.  You can look for the issue  in the Forum, looking
for spell check problem. The developers do not get to a real solution without
that.

I guess it does not know which language to use. Check if this is correkt

If that looks fine and every word is underlined with red lines Then you
should look to reset your profile. Actually you do not need to rename
the complete profile. Only the section of the spellchecker, but I am
currently unsure which folder it is. On windows all configurations are
stored in the folder %appdata%\OpenOffice\4. Rename it, and OpenOffice
resets.

I've downloaded the current version of open office.  Same problem.

As you have posted in an OpenOffice mailing list, I assume that when you write
"Office" (normally a shorthand for MS Office) you mean OpenOffice Writer and my
answer is targetted towards that.

If all words are underlined with red wiggly line, then most probably no
language is set by default for your text. If you have the Status Bar turned on
(bottom bar of OpenOffice Window - /View /Status Bar if not showing) the
language for the document at the cursor position is shown in the middle of the
Status Bar. This will probably be "None".

This tutorial explains how to correct for an unselected or wrongly selected
language.

Start by renaming your OpenOffice user profile.

If you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File
Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer (sometimes
called Windows Explorer)
Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a
good choice. Start OpenOffice.

This cures most spellcheck problems.

Do you UPGRADE the version of open office lately ? if yes, THAT is
the problem. Because there is a bug every time you change your version.

There is no bug in the enquirer's declared behaviour. The spelling
checking acts as it should for her. The problem with "scalp " is not
reproducible: I'm guessing that the word may have a capital eye in
place of the required lower case ell, which might be easy to miss in
a sans serif font. The problem with "in" is similarly not
reproducible. It would be useful to see a sample document showing the
problems. And she needs to enable the thesaurus, or perhaps to
recognise that misspelled or (in particular) long words may have no
synonyms in the thesaurus.

Again, if you are seeing problems after upgrading, there is something
wrong with how you are attempting this.

A quick solution is to delete or rename your OpenOffice User Profile.
OpoenOffice, on next startup, will create a new User Profile, and the

This cures most spellcheck problems.

Loss of spellchecker can occur when the computer has been powered off too
swiftly, before the internal housekeeping has been written to disk. After you
have closed OpenOffice, use the formal computer power-off procedure to shut the
computer down, then wait a few seconds (ten will probably be enough) to allow
the internal buffers in the hard disk be flushed to the platters, before
pulling the power plug or closing the laptop lid.

Start by renaming your existing OpenOffice user profile.

As you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open
File Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File
Explorer (sometimes called Windows Explorer) Address Bar and press
Enter. Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a good choice. Start
OpenOffice.

This cures most spellcheck problems.

The loss of spellcheck may be related to a crash of OpenOffice or
overhasty close down of OO or the computer, before the internal buffers
in the hard drive have flushed to disk, which can cause the OO User
Profile to be improperly (or not at all) written.

Try renaming your OO user profile.

This happens usually because you power off your computer too hastily or close

I assume you are using Windows. If so, reset your OpenOffice User Profile.
Close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File Explorer. Copy and paste
%appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer Address Bar and press Enter. Rename
the "user" folder. Start OpenOffice.

If you are not using Windows, resetting your OpenOffice User Profile is still
the thing to do, but the methods will differ from above, varying with the
operating system you are using.

Assuming you are using Windows and version 4.x of AOO:

]Rename your OpenOffice user profile. In Windows do this by: Close
OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File Explorer. Copy and paste
%appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer Address Bar (not the search
engine) and press Enter.

( If you are using version 3.x of AOO, paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\3 instead)

File Explorer may also be called Windows Explorer. Rename the "user"
folder, say to user.old. Start OpenOffice. When you restart OpenOffice,
you should be prompted for name/initials on next startup of OO.

Hi -

The Apache OpenOffice project is being actively developed, versions 4.1.6 and
4.2 are in progress. WE are not going to make major changes and try to keep
everything stable. We have no company backing and completely depend on
community volunteers.

We also provide support for forums.openoffice.org

LibreOffice developers have chosen not to contribute to Apache OpenOffice

This is to do with some choice made during installation or due to bad selection
made for a previous version of OpenOffice on the computer.

On the non spellchecking computer do this:

As you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File
Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer (sometimes
called Windows Explorer)
Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a good
choice. Start OpenOffice.

This cures most spellcheck problems.

The normal cure for this problem is to delete or rename your OpenOffice User
Profile. Details of the User Profile for various operating systems are given in

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74=12426

If you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File
Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer Address
Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a good choice.
Start OpenOffice.

This cures most spellcheck problems

It can sometimes happen that an installation produces a faulty user profile
"out of the box". The above fix works in the vast majority of cases.

Unfortunately that only works in mail. The bug was never fixed in the

This is such a common refrain that it really should be highlighted in the help
system and a menu item added to rename the profile.

I hope that the Powers That Be are reading this!

As you are using Windows, close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File

This cures most spellcheck problems

Note that this is a checker - it flags suspected errors. To correct these you
should right click on the suspect word, and then select the chosen correction

The loss of your spellcheck facility most probably occurred because you were
over hasty in powering off the computer before the OO housekeeping was fully
finished. To prevent it happening again, always power the computer down after
using the correct shutdown procedure and wait for all disk activity to finish -
a matter of a few extra seconds to be certain.

The culprit is often in the registrymodifications.xcu file; however, this file
keeps a running history of OpenOffice use and configuration, so no two copies
of it are sufficiently similar to isolate the significant difference with any
ease. As such corruptions rarely seem to happen to developers and advanced
users they have no incentive to waste their time sorting out such a problem.

It should not be time-consuming. Use the diff command in a terminal.
See man diff. It might be a good idea to copy the file somewhere (using .orig)
right after you install it and it works, so if you run into the problem, you

with your forum but it said I was too new to post anything.

Since you're a newbie, you haven't seen the advice, which appears about
every two or three months as to how to fix this Delete your profile.

One would think that with the constant problem this causes almost
everybody who uses that software, that the developers would fix it,
but for some reason they don't.

OO and LO have some features that are hard to find in competing products,
but they obviously have some features that can only be considered bugs.

Personally, I only use one of these close cousins when no other word-
processor will do the particular job. Maybe someday when it becomes more
user friendly. . . .

The blue “Spelling and Grammar” button checks every single word, one at a

And the red “Auto Spellcheck” button underlines every single word in red,
whether or not it was spelled incorrectly.

I “uninstalled” OpenOffice 4.1, and then “reinstalled” it, but the same
 problem persisted.

Can you help me ? Thank you, Michael J. M.

Delete or rename your OpenOffice User Profile. Details are in

An un/re-install of OpenOffice does not affect the User Profile.

My name is Craig Weidhuner, I've downloaded Open Office 4.1.0 for Windows
8.1 and have been using the writer. The spell checker seemed to keep
setting the default language to English USA and every time I open a file I
have to keep reseting it to English Canada. I can add new words to the
dictionary but every time I open the file it highlights those words as
spelling errors until I perform a spell check. Once that is done, only
then does the program seem to recognize these words. Also several times
the spell checker seems to freeze and says the program is not responding.
Now it's suddenly telling me all my words are spelled incorrectly and when
I do a spell check it seems I have to add each word back into the
dictionary. I've looked at the forums but all the posts either have the
same questions over and over again with no answer, or answers which make no
sense to me, I admit I'm not very tech savy and all these open file X and
rename this and that just confuse me. Is there anyone who can help? I
appreciate any help you can offer.

Regards

Craig
