If you have updated recently the Open Office,  then there is the problem..
There is an issue, a bug,  that appears , and they guide you to look all your
computer to delete your personal Open Office settings, so to blank them and
make a new configuration.  You can look for the issue  in the Forum, looking
for spell check problem. The developers do not get to a real solution without
that.

Das Problem deutet auf ein defektes Benutzerverzeichnis. Dieses kann man
gefahrlos umbenennen.

Thanks for that but I have checked all the language settings and have never
been able to find anything unusual in the affected file which was originally
created in OO and has been edited with LO, I agree it is a brute force
technique but in the end it seemed easier than solving the basic problem, the
amount of formatting involved was very small. It was in a file first created
nearly 20 years ago and which I update very occasionally it has been bugging me
for years and I finally got round to my solution only this week

That's almost certainly a brute-force technique for a problem which
could have been solved more simply - and without damaging the
existing formatting, all of which you would lose using your method.

What's likely here is that your text was either marked as being in
some language (or language variant) for which you did not have a
spelling dictionary installed or marked "None (Do not check
spelling)". You can resolve the problem simply by correcting the
language setting appropriately. Your journey into and out of Notepad,
which does not recognise attributes such as language, will have
removed the setting, and the text will have assumed the default
language of your new document.

Note that this problem can be caused by pasting material in from
another source, where the language property (or the "None" setting)
may be carried over. You can avoid this by using Edit | Paste
Special.. (or Ctrl+Shift+V) instead of ordinary Paste and choosing
"Unformatted text" in the Paste Special dialogue. That way, the
pasted material inherits the language property of surrounding text.

I trust this helps.

Does the spell checker work with other files, i have had a single file that did
not spell check.
If it does not work on all files then just Google it and there are answers that
work.
If it is just the one file the only solution i could find was to cut and paste
all the text into notepad and grin there cut and paste it back into a new

It's not just a case of pressing buttons. You need to verify that the precise
Language dialect is installed, and that dialect is selected for the text being
entered. The dialect of the entered language is shown on the middle of the
Status Bar at OO Window bottom. Turn off the capital letters etc on /Tools
/Autocorrect options.

As you have posted in an OpenOffice mailing list, I assume that when you write
"Office" (normally a shorthand for MS Office) you mean OpenOffice Writer and my
answer is targetted towards that.

If all words are underlined with red wiggly line, then most probably no
language is set by default for your text. If you have the Status Bar turned on
(bottom bar of OpenOffice Window - /View /Status Bar if not showing) the
language for the document at the cursor position is shown in the middle of the
Status Bar. This will probably be "None".

This tutorial explains how to correct for an unselected or wrongly selected
language.

The problem has already been solved by my suggestion of deleting or renaminf
the OpenOffice User Profile. Reinstallation of OpenOffice in general does not
solve a Spellcheck problem, a reinstallation picks up the existing faulty
OpenOffice User Profile, wherein lies the faulty information.

Start by renaming your OpenOffice user profile.

If you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File
Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer (sometimes
called Windows Explorer)
Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a
good choice. Start OpenOffice.

This cures most spellcheck problems.

Spell Check dictionary

2022-01-03 Thread Nick Boukidis
Hello,
I've used apache open office for a few years now awhile back I developed and
issue with spell checking.  In every application I open it underlines ever word
I type as misspelled.  When I try to use the spell checker it just goes through
every word 1 by 1 as misspelled but offers no suggestions on how it should be
spelled.  I think the dictionary is missing.  I just recently downloaded the
latest version of apache open office (version 4.1.11) but that didn't help.
What should I do?

Dear JP Austin:  if you has an older version and you upgraded, there ia a bug
that appear with that.  For solving in that case , you must look in the forum
al the steps you must do.  Deleting by hand some files, all your settings,
creating new ones, etc.Because the upgrading   makes a mess with old  settings
if you had before. Those that never had open office, goes well.

Do you UPGRADE the version of open office lately ? if yes, THAT is
the problem. Because there is a bug every time you change your version.

There is no bug in the enquirer's declared behaviour. The spelling
checking acts as it should for her. The problem with "scalp " is not
reproducible: I'm guessing that the word may have a capital eye in
place of the required lower case ell, which might be easy to miss in
a sans serif font. The problem with "in" is similarly not
reproducible. It would be useful to see a sample document showing the
problems. And she needs to enable the thesaurus, or perhaps to
recognise that misspelled or (in particular) long words may have no
synonyms in the thesaurus.

Again, if you are seeing problems after upgrading, there is something
wrong with how you are attempting this.

A quick solution is to delete or rename your OpenOffice User Profile.
OpoenOffice, on next startup, will create a new User Profile, and the
spellcheck should work after that. To do this:

Close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File Explorer. Copy and paste

Start by renaming your OpenOffice user profile.

If you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File

This cures most spellcheck problems.

Loss of spellchecker can occur when the computer has been powered off too
swiftly, before the internal housekeeping has been written to disk. After you
have closed OpenOffice, use the formal computer power-off procedure to shut the
computer down, then wait a few seconds (ten will probably be enough) to allow
the internal buffers in the hard disk be flushed to the platters, before
pulling the power plug or closing the laptop lid.

I have downloaded and installed 4.1.7 from the link you suggested.

Re the spellcheck problem, I used the "python" script to repair it. It
has stopped putting the red wiggly lines under everything, but now does
not indicate words which I know are misspelled. The spellcheck window
shows no dictionaries selected, although Tools > Options > Language
Settings > Languages shows something (dictionaries?) selected - see
attached.

I connected to the link you gave to subscribe to the list, but cannot
follow the instructions as I have no idea what list I need to subscribe
to, nor what lists are available, so I did not know what to substitute
for the "xyz" in the subscribe email.

The update problem is a known issue; version 4.1.7 is the latest version
of Apache OpenOffice. Just go to http://www.openoffice.org/download/ if
you need to download a later version than you have. For extensions,
you'll have to check the individual extension pages for updates.

You’re correct for the first half of your statement.
For the second half you’re incorrect, under Windows use the back slash.

Enter exactly as I set it out. Not having used Windows in any detail for over

To fix this, rename your OpenOffice user profile.

As you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter.

Open File Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer

Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a good choice.

Now restart OpenOffice.

The loss of spellcheck may be related to a crash of OpenOffice or
overhasty close down of OO or the computer, before the internal buffers
in the hard drive have flushed to disk, which can cause the OO User
Profile to be improperly (or not at all) written.

Auto Spell Check not working on laptop, but does on desktop

2019-07-06 Thread David & Louise Koch

Using Win10 Home, up to date.

I mostly use my desktop computer to write a text file using AOO, but am
on the road now and had to use my laptop (Lenovo U430) to write a
one-page text article for someone.  I was puzzled to find that the auto
spell check did not work, as it does on my desktop at home.

I checked settings, looked for solutions (mostly found from 2012 - Win7)
and tried many to no avail.  Am using simple US-English, the default
language.  The ABC underscore button is highlighted. In Tools \ Language
"For Selection" USA-English is always checked, but in "for Paragraph"
and "for All Text", USA-English is not checked and checking them
manually does not "stick".  Starting a new File\Text Document does not
improve the situation.

When I get home I'll compare settings in the two computers, but in the
meantime, do you have any suggestions to get auto spell check to work?

Try renaming your OO user profile.

If you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File
Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer (sometimes
called Windows Explorer)
Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a good
choice. Start OpenOffice.

This cures most spellcheck problems.

This happens usually because you power off your computer too hastily or close
the laptop lid, before the internal buffers of the hard drive have flushed to
the disks.

ENGLISH SPELL CHECK & ENGLISH GRAMMER CHECK

2019-05-09 Thread Lynn Larner
Hi there,

I have been looking through extensions to replace the ABC Spelling and
Grammar and the ABC Auto Spell Check on the 'Tools' menu when I use
Writer. Neither is working properly. Spelling and Grammar highlights
every word in succession. Auto check underlines every word of the
selection in red. There appears to be no words registered in either
application so nothing to check with. This has happened in the last
month. Prior to that, both applications have worked for a number of years.

Having spent some considerable time looking through extensions under a
variety of headings, I still can't find a basic English spell and grammar
check.

Please will you advise what I should do?

Many thanks,

Lynn Larner

Try renaming your OO user profile.

If you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File
Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer (sometimes
called Windows Explorer)
Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a good
choice. Start OpenOffice.

This cures most spellcheck problems.

If you are not using Windows, resetting your OpenOffice User Profile is still

2019-01-05 Thread David Robley

Assuming you are using Windows and version 4.x of AOO:

]Rename your OpenOffice user profile. In Windows do this by: Close
OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File Explorer. Copy and paste
%appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer Address Bar (not the search
engine) and press Enter.

( If you are using version 3.x of AOO, paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\3 instead)

File Explorer may also be called Windows Explorer. Rename the "user"
folder, say to user.old. Start OpenOffice. When you restart OpenOffice,
you should be prompted for name/initials on next startup of OO.

What language does AOo think that your document is in.

Odds are, you are writing your document in one language, and telling

Not an OO function. Depends on your platform. For Mac, hold down the n and
select 1 for the tilde: ñ

Hi -

The Apache OpenOffice project is being actively developed, versions 4.1.6 and
4.2 are in progress. WE are not going to make major changes and try to keep
everything stable. We have no company backing and completely depend on
community volunteers.

We also provide support for forums.openoffice.org

variants including LibreOffice are answered.

LibreOffice developers have chosen not to contribute to Apache OpenOffice
although they would be welcome to do so.
