Hi, It seems to be fixed now. I updated all the nodes to the last version as well as hosted engine. I'll see to look at VDSM logs if it happens again. This is not a disk upload, which works fine, this is an import. It loads locally from one hypervisor, and the same problem happens on the other nodes. Thanks. Sorry for the late replay but I had to travel. I've tried your suggestion and now I'm not able to start the engine VM. It's trying to get access for a storage (that I can't tell which is as vdsm only shows the ID and I don't have a way to know the label without the engine). [ovirt-users] Re: Impossible to install VM Machine
Hi Abdoul, what I don't get right is what is your setup. Ovirt can have data domains that is where you put the vm disks. That domains can be NFS share, gluster bricks, iscsi san or direct disk. When you say files sharing folders, I can't think of a data domain attached there unless it's a NFS local share. Maybe I'm missing something, but I can see that working. Do you have a data domain in storage? I tend to think you have because otherway you can't create the disks for the vms (which you add when you create the vm) Please, replay to the list too so others can see the thread. I'm having a similar problem. The passtrough needs 2 steps, the first is to attach the host device to the VM, but if you don't enable the spice usb the vm fails to start. Hi, I don't get what I should look. I can get the host module and then the same in linux. In windows it uses the driver of the manufacturer. This seems to be more something that I need to debug with the ovirt devs to point out what I should trace. I don't know how to debug an USB stream. Hi, I've tried to use 2 different audio IO interfaces connected to a VM via USB passthrough and none worked. I've tried with win 10 and win server 2016 vms with different errors but none worked. I've connected the devices to a host, then attached the host device to a VM and in the VM properties I've enabled the USB support in the console properties. The devices are installed and don't show any error in the device manager within the VM, but they don't work. Should I do something else? Re: [ovirt-users] vlan-tagging on non-tagged network
Hi, My two cents is that shouldn’t be doing mac spoofing protection as a default. There are several use cases where you may use virtual nics defined withing the guest and this feature is going to create problems to users that may not know that there’s a mac spoofing protection withing ovirt. Think of keeaplived vmac option, openvpn and any tap adapter you need to create. If you need to protect against spoofing attacks, you should use the hook or more powerful tools and in any case, you must be aware that you used this kind of protection. Re: [ovirt-users] separate ovirtmgmt from glusterfs traffic
Hi, In my experience, having ovirt traffic on the same nic that gluster can make your platafrom unstable. I was using it for large file storage and gluster has so big traffic that ovirt got confused and started marking hosts as unavailable because of hi latency. I've opened an RFE over a year ago, but had no luck with the team to get it done. In the RFE I was asking to have a way in the UI to decide which nic to use for gluster other than the MGMT net that is the one ovirt lets you use. There's another way to do this and it's from outside ovirt. There you have to unregister and re register the bricks using gluster console commands. This way, when you register the bricks, you can specify the IP address of the spare NIC and then the traffic will not interfere with the mgmt. There's a step that I don't recall much, but ovirt is going to need to know that the bricks are no longer is the mgmt IP, maybe someone else in the list can help with this. I can tell you that if you search the list you'll see my posts about this and the replys of those who helped my back then. Re: [ovirt-users] ovirt network VLAN tagging
Hi, It seems to me that it may be a switch configuration problem. The vms in the same host can talk to each other via the bridge, but if your switch is not configured to allow tagged traffic for vlans 50 and 60 (and all the way to the interface of the other host must allow tagged traffic for those vlans), you won't be able to get traffic. Both are virtualization platforms based on KVM (so you can run vms from one platafrom into the other without any conversion, just export-improt,copy or whatever you need to go from one to the other). They have both their upsides and downsides, basically IMHO, I like proxmox decentralized way of managing the platform, but I love more the great community around ovirt and it's fast evolution. I'm aware of the open source nature of the project, my way of contributing is testing, reporting bugs and propose rfes, that much I can do. Re: [Users] engine-backup --restore
Almost, when you mean random password, you mean for the engine user in the database? The new install and the old differ in some things in the db, so I tried to made then the same, but I saw a post of a user that removed the engine database and user and created them again before trying to restore, is that a good path? OK, that did work. I droped the database and created it back and also changed the password for the engine user. That did the trick. Some comments - 1. when you use different IP addresses for engine -to -gluster host (say IP1) and gluster -to -gluster communication (say IP2), operations from ovirt engine like add brick or remove brick would fail (as brick is tried to be added with IP1 which gluster does not understand) To work around this, it is better to use a FQDN both for registering the host with engine and also to peer probe the host from gluster CLI. You could have multiple IP addresses on the host resolve to the same FQDN. 2. To reuse a brick directory, gluster provides the force option during volume creation as well as adding bricks. Hi Sahina, I've tried to remove the volume also from gluster manually to see if ovirt would set it as inactive, but nothing. The thing now is that as I was unable to remove the gluster domain, I decided to force remove the hole data center and to my surprise, though it deleted the DC and all it's data, it didn't delete the volume and is still there in volume tab depending on a non existing cluster and thus I'm not able to do anything with it as everything fails with there's no host in the cluster Sounds like the destroy operation is not checking everything and leaves things hanging in the air. I have a deadline to get this working by the 10th February and won't be at the office from 4 through 6, so you may imagine where I'm standing. I think the hole logic of dependencies in the gluster DC (maybe more) must be checked as since I had my gluster domain down I was unable to do mostly anything in the DC because everything depended on each other. I couldn't delete the domain as there where vms in it, but couldn't delete the vms as they needed the domain. Re: [Users] networking: basic vlan help
Hi Mike, I'd like to say that though setting ovirtmgmt as non vm as a default should be nice, it won't be enough as it won't allow to use mixed traffic in other interfaces either, so the way I see it, the fix should be to add this ability to ovirt. I can't make my mind to think what a big corporation may need in security restrictions, but as a small company, I'm willing to take the risk of a hardly probable security breach in favor of been able to use untagged and tagged vlans on the same nic. Besides that it's technically not possible in the way we currently use the Linux Bridge [1], I'm not sure what's to gain from representing a single flat network with multiple representations. Seems to me like there may be a couple different points here: * ovirtmgmt is VM network by default - should be configurable on setup and/or DC creation. If it's such a prevalent issue, we should consider a default of non VM network (users can create a flat network and use it quite easily anyway, if they want). * if people want to represent different L3 networks on the same L2 network, it is worthwhile to design a proper solution Either way, I wouldn't push for allowing multiple bridged networks on the same physical interface (or bond). Re: [Users] networking: basic vlan help
Hi Robert, As I said before, you'll have network disruptions everytime you change network topology and that's not because of ovirt but because you need to restart network to set the new interfaces, routing tables and addresses, etc. This does not mean that you loose access to your hosts, if everything goes right and you have everything set correctly, then after network comes up, you should have access to your hosts. But if you have network traffic, it will loose connectivity for a few seconds. For the switch stuff, a simple switch will forward all packages regardless of the vlan tag, so you won't need to configure anything. These are the domestic or soho kind of switches. If you have a vlan aware switch (most managed cheap ones have vlan features), then you'll have to set vlans (either tagged or untagged) in the respective ports to be able to get traffic from them. Remember that marking a network in ovirt as a vlan network means that it'll be accepting tagged traffic from that vlan. If you set your ports to have a native vlan (untagged), then you should use non-vlan networks in ovirt. Regards, ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users
[Users] vlan on mgmt network
Hi William, You can have several logical networks on the same interface. If ovirtmgmt is not a vm network you can even mix tagged and untagged networks (if not, you can't mix). You don's have to do anything besides creating the logical networks in ovirt and assign them to the interface, ovirt takes care of creating the virtual interfaces it needs. What you can't do is have more than one logical network per vlan (I think there's a feature request on this, I know I've asked it on the list:-) ). Do I understand correctly that even though it's marked as out-of-sync, you don't see the synchronize checkbox when editing the network on the host (little pencil icon)? It doesn't. I made some tests and I found that it's a problem with firefox (mine is version 26 over Fedora 19). It's showing things a little bit bigger than chrome and so the sync option is not shown in the edit window. Other functions also are not working properly, for instance, if I choose a particular item into a category (host, vm, etc) in the left tree, the right frame does not change, I have to choose the group (hosts, vms, etc) and choose the particular item among all the listed in the right frame. I've checked and firefox 22 on windows has the same behavior. This started to happen after I upgraded from 3.3.0 to 3.3.1 but never saw the lack of the sync option until now. Yours, Lior. Re: [Users] Networking questions (LONG)
Hi Dan, I take the chance to ask; why is that the untagged IF can see the traffic of the tagged vlans? Isn't that filtered at kernel level? Is this a virtualization design limitation or is it down to the kernel? I don't know how the kernel processes the packages, but I thought that packages that arrives to the nic are filtered by the kernel and sent to the respective vif (untagged to the master interface and tagged to the .XX interfaces). I ask because other virtualization platforms don't have this limitation and I wonder if it's because they don't care of because they solved this somehow. I have installed and all-in-one setup on a test box (which itself used to be an ESXi server), but it only has one NIC. I trying to duplicate our typical configuration we do in VMware, which is this: 1.) we create several port groups on the vSwitch, each assigned a VLAN ID, such as: - VLAN001 (VLAN ID: 1) - VLAN002 (VLAN ID: 2) - VLAN009 (VLAN ID: 9) - VLAN010 (VLAN ID: 10) - VLAN200 (VLAN ID: 200) - TRUNK (VLAN ID: 4095 - in VMware-world, VLAN ID 4095 is all VLANS and basically just passes the VLANs through to whatever is attached to the port group for the VM to handle) 2.) We assign VMs to port groups appropriate for the VLAN they are part of. 3.) The only VM that has a NIC assigned to the TRUNK port group is the firewall (which is Linux), and we create VLAN interfaces on it (i.e., eth1.1, eth1.2, eth1.10, eth1.200). The firewall VM acts as the router between the various VLANs. To replicate the above in oVirt, I created logical networks for each VLAN, and assigned the appropriate VLAN ID. It seems oVirt/KVM does not have an equivalent for VMware's VLAN ID of 4095, so after some searching around, so for the TRUNK network, I left it with no VLAN assigned. Because i cannot add VLAN and non-VLAN networks to the same physical NIC, after some searching around, it looks like I may have to utilise two NICS: one for the VLAN networks and one for the TRUNK network. That is true. One non-VLAN network can in fact sit on the same NIC with VLAN networks, but it has to be non-VM. This was devised as a security constraint - otherwise, a VM attached to the non-VLAN network could sniff traffic from another (VLAN) network. However, it seems that this is exactly what you need - a special VM that is designed to do just that. And it's not only you: there's another recent request for lifting this limitation: Bug 1049476 - [RFE] Mix untagged and tagged Logical Networks on the same NIC However, I'm not sure that you in fact need a TRUNK VM network in oVirt. If you want your firewall VM to get all traffic from the VLANs, you could create a vNIC for each network, to which you'll attach a profile (oVirt's equivalent of port group if I'm not mistaken) of the corresponding network. The host can remain with just the VLAN networks attached to its NICs, without a designated TRUNK. This way the firewall VM will get something like eth1 for VLAN 1, eth2 for VLAN 200 and so forth, which might be close enough to what you described on your previous setup (oVirt currently doesn't allow creating VLANs inside VMs). And if I correctly understood your needs it will save you the trouble you described below (well, you would need the one dummy interface). Because, at this point, I am not yet concerned with making the test VMs I will be setting up be accessible from outside the virtual lab environment (i.e., everything will communicate within my oVirt server/network for now), I am trying to make use of dummy interfaces, but I am not sure the best way to make use of this. I am able to create the dummy* interfaces and have them show up in oVirt, but I am not sure of how they should be setup. Here is what I am *thinking* should be done, but want to make sure it is correct before getting too deep: - I will use the physical NIC for management, therefore the ovirtmgmt bridge with eth0 assigned to it will remain as-is - Create two dummy interfaces: dummy0 and dummy1 - Create a new bridge, ovirtvm and assign dummy0 and dummy1 to it This is something that currently can't be done from within the oVirt engine, but if my above suggestion works for you then it won't be needed. - Attach the VLAN-enabled networks to dummy0 - Attach the TRUNK network to dummy1 I do not understand what you are trying to do with dummy devices (after all, they are not going to send any packet anywhere). But if you are willing to mess with network configuration under the feet of oVirt, you could do the following: - create a network tagged with an id that is not really used in your

Are you doing this on a node or on your engine server? Re: [Users] simple networking?
Hi Ted, I've lost the beggining of the thread so excuse me if I'm wrong about the topic. Do you want to get all the vms and host in the same subnet as the rest of your lan or the hole collision domain? When you create the logical networks (LN) in ovirt you can check if they are required or not. If you decide that all your hosts must give access to some subnet for vm use, you can create a LN, mark it as required in your data center (DC) and configure it in every host you have in the dc. Then you have two choices, if you just want the vms to access that subnet, add it to the host without configuring the ip on the host and you'll just get a bridge for vm use. If you want the host to use the bridge also, configure the ip and you'll get both, vms and host to be in the subnet. If what you need is to get every vm access to the hole collision domain, then I don't think you can do it in ovirt as you get a bridge for every logical network and if you have both, tagged and untagged vlan traffic, you won't be able use the same nic (or bond) to place mixed LNs (a limitation I've rised but yet haven't been resolved). Hope this helps. Regards, ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users

Re: [Users] backups
Hi, Just curious, is it really the porpoise of the snapshot to backup both the vm and the application data? I think snapshot is appropriate to backup the vm and the you should have your regular backup for the app, as a database backup that can be done online. In this scenario you take a backup of the vm when something changes (updates, new software, configs, etc) and not all the time and do regular backups of the db as it's the information that changes all the time. I said this because I'm curious about the benefits of doing backups the way it's been posted. Regards, ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users

Hi, Sorry if it's the wrong place, but don't know where to place the request (besides bugzilla). I won't speak for the hole Spanish community, but in the webadmin, in the VMs tab says Crear una toma de pantalla referring to create a snapshot but that is an incorrect translation in my opinion as it's not related to the screen in first place, and though there's no literal translation for the technical term, it should be more like Crear una instantánea or what should be better, Crear un snapshot and it would be correct as when you say whisky instead of licor de cebada of football instead of balón pie ... :-) Regards, ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users
