[ovirt-users] Is it possible to change scheduler optimization settings of cluster using ansible or some other automation way

2020-09-30 Thread Kushagra Agarwal
I was hoping if i can get some help with the below oVirt scenario:

*Problem Statement*:-

Is it possible to change scheduler optimization settings of cluster using
ansible or some other automation way

*Description*:- Do we have any ansible module or any other CLI based
approach which can help us to change 'scheduler optimization' settings of
cluster in oVIrt. Scheduler optimization settings of cluster can be found
under Scheduling Policy tab ( Compute -> Clusters(select the cluster) ->
click on edit and then navigate to scheduling policy

Any help in this will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kushagra

When you ran `engine-setup` did you enable cinderlib preview (it will
not be enabled by default)?
It should handle the creation of the database automatically, if you
didn't you can enable it by running:
`engine-setup --reconfigure-optional-components`

Hi,

First, I'd recommend to set the hosted-engine VM with custom bios type set
to q35+seabios (that's going to be automatically set as of 4.4.3).
Second, what version of oVirt 4.4 do you use?

[ovirt-users] Re: update to 4.4 fails with "Domain format is different from master storage domain format" (v4.3 cluster with V4 NFS storage domains)

2020-09-30 Thread Sergey Kulikov

I was able to finish update manually creating hosted_storage domain from new
engine web interface
after first failure, in this case it was created with format V4 and ansible
playbook doesn't
recreate it, after updating engine and host updating cluster compatibility
level to 4.4 also updated
all storages to V5 format.

One more strange behavior was observed in this tasks:
[ INFO ] TASK [ovirt.hosted_engine_setup : Make the engine aware that the
external VM is stopped]
[ INFO ] TASK [ovirt.hosted_engine_setup : Wait for the local bootstrap VM to
be down at engine eyes]

it can fail, because engine can't connect to deploy host and local VM has
unknown status, stopping
firewalld at this moment solves it, this may be caused by "iptables" firewall
type set in hosted
engine cluster, maybe in this case firewalld not configured by hosted-engine
--deploy ?

The problem we face right now is that, since the engine is a VM of
itself, we can't bring it back up to apply the new configuration.

Is there any way to fix this? Without reinstalling preferably.

Hi all,

We are running an oVirt 4.4 Hosted Engine as a VM, and after
changing the Cluster's BIOS type from Q35 with Legacy BIOS (the

XML error: The device at PCI address :00:02.0 cannot be
plugged into the PCI controller with index='0'. It requires a
controller that accepts a pcie-root-port.

We need it so that we can run imported VMs from a previous
version of oVirt, namely 4.0.
Applying the BIOS settings individually works but as an attempt
to generalize the settings we decided to apply it to the full
cluster.

Tell me if you need more data.

Hi,

First, I'd recommend to set the hosted-engine VM with custom bios
type set to q35+seabios (that's going to be automatically set as of
4.4.3).

Second, what version of oVirt 4.4 do you use?

[ovirt-users] Re: Latest ManagedBlockDevice documentation

2020-09-30 Thread Michael Thomas
I hadn't installed the necessary packages when the engine was first
installed.

However, running 'engine-setup --reconfigure-optional-components'
doesn't work at the moment because (by design) my engine does not have a
network route outside of the cluster. It fails with:

[ INFO ] DNF Errors during downloading metadata for repository 'AppStream':
   - Curl error (7): Couldn't connect to server for
http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=8=x86_64=AppStream=$infra

for
http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=8=x86_64=AppStream=$infra
[Failed to connect to mirrorlist.centos.org port 80: Network is unreachable]

I have a proxy set in the engine's /etc/dnf/dnf.conf, but it doesn't
seem to be obeyed when running engine-setup. Is there another way that
I can get engine-setup to use a proxy?

It should handle the creation of the database automatically, if you
didn't you can enable it by running:
`engine-setup --reconfigure-optional-components`

The feature page is outdated, but I believe this is what most users
in the mailing list were using. We held off on updating it because the
installation instructions have been a moving target, but it is more
stable now and I will update it soon.

Specifically speaking, the openstack version should be updated to
train (it is likely ussuri works fine too, but I haven't tried it) and
cinderlib has an RPM now (python3-cinderlib)[1], so it can be
installed instead of using pip, same goes for os-brick. The rest of
the information is valid.

The oVirt administration guide[1] does not talk about managed block devices.

Is the Managed Block Storage domain a supported feature in oVirt 4.4.2,

I am still running 4.3, so "python" is 2.7.

Don't run it on a host, run it from within the Engine VM.

The host(s) will figure out by themselves that they need to start the
engine if one isn't running. Then when the engine starts the script will
run and start the VMs.

[ovirt-users] Re: VM AutoStart

2020-09-30 Thread Derek Atkins
I did. years ago. When 4.0 was current.

Some of the work to implement that went into 4.4, where it will recover
state on a crash (i.e., if you have VMs marked as auto-start and you have
a power outage, it will restart them). However, I believe there is no
order to it, and it will only start VMs that were running when the system
went down. That doesn't help me; I have a single-host ovirt system and
whenever I do routine maintenance I cleanly shut down the VMs, and I want
them to come back up when ovirt does.

There is, I believe, more going into later versions. I think there are
still at least one or two open RFEs on auto-starting VMs.

But I still use the script because I need complete fault recovery on my
system, and I need ordering of restarts (need my DNS server to come up
before other things, for example).

If you do need to make fixes for python3, please feel free to send them my
way!

[ovirt-users] CEPH - Opinions and ROI

2020-09-30 Thread Jeremey Wise
I have for many years used gluster because..well. 3 nodes.. and so long as
I can pull a drive out.. I can get my data.. and with three copies.. I have
much higher chance of getting it.

Downsides to gluster: Slower (its my home..meh... and I have SSD to avoid
MTBF issues ) and with VDO.. and thin provisioning.. not had issue.

BUT gluster seems to be falling out of favor. Especially as I move
towards OCP.

So.. CEPH. I have one SSD in each of the three servers. so I have some
space to play.

I googled around.. and find no clean deployment notes and guides on CEPH +
oVirt.

Comments or ideas..

[ovirt-users] Re: Gluster Volumes - Correct Peer Connection

2020-09-30 Thread penguin pages
I think this is the issue. When HCI deployed nodes. and consumed the drives
and setup "engine" "data" and "vmstore"

The GUI was set for "storage" network via hostsnames correctly. And I think,
based on watching replication traffic it is using 10Gb "storage" network. CLI
shows peers on that LAN also.

BUT.. oVirt keeps refering to nodes as the "hostname"
EX:
thor.penguinpages.local (ovirtmanagment lan 1Gb 172.16.100.0/24)
vs
thorst.penguinpages.local (storage lan 10Gb 172.16.101.0/24)

We see this error when I notice a brick having replication issue. Which the
CLI does not show. but that is a different topic :)
# node "medusa" showing three unsynced files. Select brick ->reset

But when I say "reset brick" to restart its replication I get error

Error while executing action Start Gluster Volume Reset Brick: Volume reset
brick start failed: rc=-1 out=() err=['brick:
medusa_penguinpages_local:/gluster_bricks/vmstore/vmstore does not exist in

Subject: [ovirt-users] CEPH - Opinions and ROI

I have for many years used gluster because..well. 3 nodes.. and so long as I
can pull a drive out.. I can get my data.. and with three copies.. I have much
higher chance of getting it.

Downsides to gluster: Slower (its my home..meh... and I have SSD to avoid MTBF
issues ) and with VDO.. and thin provisioning.. not had issue.

BUT gluster seems to be falling out of favor. Especially as I move
towards OCP.

So.. CEPH. I have one SSD in each of the three servers. so I have some space
to play.

I googled around.. and find no clean deployment notes and guides on CEPH +
oVirt.

Comments or ideas..

[ovirt-users] Re: update to 4.4 fails with "Domain format is different from master storage domain format" (v4.3 cluster with V4 NFS storage domains)

2020-09-30 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
Are you trying to use the same storage domain ?
I hope not, as this is not supposed to be done like that.As far as I remember -
you need fresh storage.

It looks like storage domains in data center should have been upgraded to V5
when DC and cluster
compatibility version was updated to 4.3, but looks like it was implemented in
ovirt 4.3.3 and this
setup was updated from 4.2 to 4.3 before 4.3.3 was released, so I ended up with
4.3 DCs and clusters
with V4 storage domain format.
Is there any way to convert V4 to V5 (there are running VMs on them) to be able
upgrade to 4.4?

[ovirt-users] Re: Power on VM - CLI / API

2020-09-30 Thread Klaas Demter
I would suggest to do it via one of the sdks, for example python
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine-sdk/blob/master/sdk/examples/start_vm.py
- you can create a simple python script you can start from cli.

Alternatively use ansible, you can also call that from cli.

Greetings

Klaas

Ya.. that is a lot easier.

errors on getting that to work) I just want VMs to boot on initial cluster
start.

this was standard in libvirt :) I am trying to convert to oVirt ways...

I would create an ansible playbook that will be running from the engine:
1. Check the engine's health page via uri module and wait_for (maybe with a

Healthpage is : https://engine_FQDN/ovirt-engine/services/health
2. Use ansible ovirt_vm module to start your vms in the order you want
3. Test the playbook
4. Create a oneshot systemd servce that starts after 'ovirt-engine.service' and
runs your playbook

I looked at HA settings for those VMs but it seems to be watching for pause

I run it out of rc.local:

/usr/local/sbin/start_vms.py > /var/log/start_vms 2>&1 &

The script is smart enough to wait for the engine to be fully active.

[ovirt-users] Re: Version 4.4.2.6-1.el8 -Console Error: java.lang.reflect.UndeclaredThrowableException

2020-09-30 Thread Jeremey Wise
I found this note from RedHat on bugzilla

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1827033

Seems like this could be my issue

This could be where had issue with rebuild of ovirt-engine. And then had
to scrape out the disk files to then import them back in. I then moved the
"old files" into sub folder "junk" ... so after reboot I could know nobody
needed them..and delete old orphaned disk from previous oVirt-HCI deploy
version.

[ovirt-users] Re: VM AutoStart

2020-09-30 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
I would create an ansible playbook that will be running from the engine:
1. Check the engine's health page via uri module and wait_for (maybe with a
regex)
Healthpage is : https://engine_FQDN/ovirt-engine/services/health
2. Use ansible ovirt_vm module to start your vms in the order you want
3. Test the playbook
4. Create a oneshot systemd servce that starts after 'ovirt-engine.service' and
runs your playbook

[ovirt-users] Power on VM - CLI / API

2020-09-30 Thread Jeremey Wise
Can anyone post link. (with examples.. as most documentation for oVirt
lacks this).. where I can power on a VM via CLI or API.

As of now I cannot login to oVirt-Engine. No errors when I restart it..
https://lists.ovirt.org/archives/list/users@ovirt.org/thread/45KKF5TN5PRQ3R7MDOWIQTSYZXZRVDIZ/

BUt... I need to get VMs booted.

I tried to follow:
http://ovirt.github.io/ovirt-engine-api-model/master/
and my server's API web portal
https://ovirte01.penguinpages.local/ovirt-engine/apidoc/#/documents/003_common_concepts

And.. even get POSTMAN (real newbie at that tool but ran into how to add
exported .pem key from portal to session issues)

# failed CLI example: Power on VM "ns01"

[ovirt-users] Re: VM AutoStart

2020-09-30 Thread Derek Atkins
Hi,

I had a script based around ovirt-shell which I re-wrote as a script
around the Python SDK4 which I run on my engine during the startup
sequence. The script will wait for the engine to come up and ensure the
storage domains are up before it tries to start the VMs. Then it will go
ahead and start the VMs in the specified order with specified delay and/or
wait-for-up signal between them.

You can find my scripts at https://www.ihtfp.org/ovirt/

Or you can go the ansible route :)

Enjoy!

[ovirt-users] Re: VM AutoStart

2020-09-30 Thread Jeremey Wise
As the three servers are Centos8 minimal installs. + oVirt HCI wizard to
keep them lean and mean... a couple questions

1) which version of python would I need for this (note in script about
python 2 but isn't that deprecated?)
[root@thor /]# yum install python
Last metadata expiration check: 2:29:38 ago on Wed 30 Sep 2020 01:18:32 PM
EDT.
No match for argument: python
There are following alternatives for "python": python2, python36, python38
Error: Unable to find a match: python

2) When you have three nodes.. one is set to host the ovirt-engine active,
and another as backup. If this is added to rc.local. Of the two nodes
hosting HA for oVirt-engine.. node which boots first will host (or so it
seems). I think if I add this to both those hosts .. it will not create
issues. Any thoughts?

[ovirt-users] Re: Replica Question

2020-09-30 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
In your case it seems reasonable, but you should test the 2 stripe sizes (128K
vs 256K) before running in production. The good thing about replica volumes is
that you can remove a brick , recreate it from cli and then add it back.

Hello,

I am planning to use (6) 1 TB disks in a hardware RAID 6 array which will yield
4 data disks per oVirt Gluster brick.

However.
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_gluster_storage/3.5/html-single/administration_guide/index#sect-Disk_Configuration
 ---  states

"For RAID 6, the stripe unit size must be chosen such that the full stripe size
(stripe unit * number of data disks) is between 1 MiB and 2 MiB, preferably in
the lower end of the range. Hardware RAID controllers usually allow stripe unit
sizes that are a power of 2. For RAID 6 with 12 disks (10 data disks), the
recommended stripe unit size is 128KiB"

In my case,  each  oVirt Gluster Brick would have 4 data disks which would mean
a 256K hardware RAID stripe size ( by what I see above)  to get the full stripe
size unit to above 1 MiB  ( 4 data disks X 256K Hardware RAID stripe = 1024 K )

Could I use a smaller stripe size ex. 128K -- since most of the oVirt virtual
disk traffic will be small sharded files and a 256K stripe would seem to me to
be pretty big.for this type of data ?

Thanks For Your Help !!

[ovirt-users] Re: Gluster Volumes - Correct Peer Connection

2020-09-30 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
If you can do it from cli - use the cli as it has far more control over what
the UI can provide.
Usually I use UI for monitoring and basic stuff like starting/stopping the
brick or setting the 'virt'group via the 'optimize for Virt' (or whatever it
was called).

But would be valuable to learn oVirt "Best Practice" way... though the HCI

No, this is fresh storage(completely empty dir) and hosted-engine deploy
creates V5 format domain in V4 DC,
where master domain is also V4, I can see this in web available from local
deploy VM. And storage is
automatically renamed by deploy script.

[ovirt-users] VM AutoStart

2020-09-30 Thread Jeremey Wise
When I have to shut down cluster... ups runs out etc.. I need a sequence
set of just a small number of VMs to "autostart"

Normally I just use DNS FQND to connect to oVirt engine but as two of my
VMs are a DNS HA cluster.. as well as NTP / SMTP /DHCP etc... I need
those two infrastructure VMs to be auto boot.

I looked at HA settings for those VMs but it seems to be watching for pause
/resume.. but it does not imply or state auto start on clean first boot.

Options?

Hi,

could you please share your engine.log and server.log?
Did you try restarting the engine and re-login from

[ovirt-users] Version 4.4.2.6-1.el8 -Console Error: java.lang.reflect.UndeclaredThrowableException

2020-09-30 Thread penguin pages

Got message this AM when tried to login to oVirt Engine which up till now has
been working fine.

I can supply username and password and get portal to choose "Administration
Portal" or "VM Portal"

I have tested both.. both have same response about
java.lang.reflect.UndeclaredThrowableException

I restarted the engine
#

I downloaded and installed key from portal.. thinking that may have been
issue.. it was not.

I googled around /searched forum and nothing jumped out. (only hit I found in
forum https://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2015-June/033421.html but no
note about fix)

[ovirt-users] Re: Replica Question

2020-09-30 Thread C Williams
Hello,

I am planning to use (6) 1 TB disks in a hardware RAID 6 array which will
yield 4 data disks per oVirt Gluster brick.

However.
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_gluster_storage/3.5/html-single/administration_guide/index#sect-Disk_Configuration
--- states

"For RAID 6, the stripe unit size must be chosen such that the full stripe
size (stripe unit * number of data disks) is between 1 MiB and 2 MiB,
preferably in the lower end of the range. Hardware RAID controllers usually
allow stripe unit sizes that are a power of 2. For RAID 6 with 12 disks (10
data disks), the recommended stripe unit size is 128KiB"

In my case, each oVirt Gluster Brick would have 4 data disks which would
mean a 256K hardware RAID stripe size ( by what I see above) to get the
full stripe size unit to above 1 MiB ( 4 data disks X 256K Hardware RAID
stripe = 1024 K )

Could I use a smaller stripe size ex. 128K -- since most of the oVirt
virtual disk traffic will be small sharded files and a 256K stripe would
seem to me to be pretty big.for this type of data ?

Thanks For Your Help !!
