BOSI meets this evening June 3rd from 6-8 PM!
Greetings List Lurkers, Welcome to June! As a Yard Ape, I must hand it over to Dame Judith, who has been splendid in the specialized Free Open Source area of Genealogy... check out http://family.flint.com for more info... (Still working on cleaning up the links...:^) The good news is that last week Dr. Mark just stopped by with another juicy load of technorubble... Many ethernet switches with all the favorite brand names. Sing out if you are interested in this TechnoRubble loot. With the season approaching summer, I am now outside rather than tied to my beloved Dell. Thus, my closing act was to get VisualBash "menubot.sh" operational. (http://docbox.flint.com:8081/visual.bash#menubot.sh). What this does is take a proposed help menu and constructs a VisualBash "FED" framework within which you concoct the functions necessary to get the job done. The program currently exists in draft form, a rewrite will arrive with the approaching storms from the midwest.. The new winter season will no doubt develop the idea wherein we develop a searchable database of functions which could be added to any visualbash FED program. More on that as time passes... I am overjoyed that by using menubot.sh we now have the beginning of the completion of the Zope2 backup and containerization project. The first VisualBash to come out of this "interpreter-interpreter" was a VisualBash script called Zope System Control (zsc.sh)... Beyond interesting interactions with the root user, this will in time be used for the management of the Zope2 system that DTG and I virtual-ized last month. You cannot imagine how gratifying it is to have finally made some progress, and it works on the production web site! Once the WAMDMMS (Week After Memorial Day Monday Morning Syndrome) ends, I will be back burnishing this to make even more of my life VisualBash script driven... This question remains; can I use Chat GPT to generate VisualBash scripts? I particularly want a shell generator that takes the menubot.sh result and based upon the contents of the menu generates or queries and inserts the VisualBash Function slugs from the database mentioned above. The working title of this database is "SAMUF". (Simple And Maybe Useful Functions :^) At this time the Evaluator and the Dispatcher (the E in FED) are now already created by menubot.sh. God and Dave-The-Geek help me... That said it was great to see Joe Golden Memorial Day!!! Now that I have mastered generation of VisualBash, I endeavor to revise the following script: lxcycl.sh - The LinuX Container CYCle (http://docbox.flint.com:8081/docker#LinxXContainercYCL) At risk of repetition... Could this methodology empower our adventures into Home Assistant? I am not the first person to complain about the difficulty in provisioning Home Assistant. ...so more about these foolish ideas is available this Monday evening at 6 PM at the York Library. This all adds up to our centralizing and convocating at the York Branch Library this evening. That said, come in person or remotely and bring this and any other problems and questions and we will do our thing! This evening beyond the Library face-2-face & gizmo-2-gizmo, we shall use meet.jit.si/bosi to connect. Come on to meet.Jit.si/bosi at 6PM! Feel free to click the following link to join... BOSI meets this evening May 27th from 6-8 PM!
Mon 27 May 2024 12:39:07 PM EDT Greetings List Lurkers, Spring has clearly sprung here in the North Country... ...the result is that your humble correspondent has become a Yard Ape, apparently making no more progress on matters digital. The good news is that Dr. Mark just stopped by with another juicy load of technorubble... Many ethernet switches with all the favorite brand names. With the season being spring, I am now outside rather than tied to my beloved Dell. Now that I have mastered generation of VisualBash, I endeavor to revise the following script: lxcycl.sh - The LinuX Container CYCle (http://docbox.flint.com:8081/docker#LinxXContainercYCL) At risk of repetition... This is an attempt to encapsulate the tools you need to perform most docker based development. This kind of script is mostly to allow me to learn and retain my foo in docker development. I maintain that this script is necessary as my mastery of the "docker" noun-verb name-space waxes and wanes as time goes on. This unworthy efforts is up on GitHub as I finished mercilessly editing lxcycl.sh. The concept is that the program once properly activated, will prompt you with the command line prior to executing it, thus allowing for you to painlessly learn the docker noun-verb name-space. This is a work in progress. But only after the completion of many Yard Ape duties that have piled up... Could this methodology empower our adventures into Home Assistant? Duty calls...
Mon 13 May 2024 01:23:15 PM EDT Greetings List Lurkers, I have been called away to that nest of Commies in Chittenden County as a Delegate, a self-inflicted injury that can only be quenched with the blood of patriots, or parrots, I forget which... The season is spring, and I am now outside rather than tied to my beloved Dell. Again, I remain most satisfied to get VisualBash "menubot.sh" operational. (http://docbox.flint.com:8081/visual.bash#menubot.sh). What this does is take a proposed help menu and constructs a VisualBash "FED" framework within which you concoct the functions necessary to get the job done. It has germinated an idea wherein we develop a searchable database of functions which could be added to any visualbash FED program, but more on that as time passes... BOSI meets today, May 13th 2024 at 18:00 EST
Greetings List Lurkers, I have determined that our Digital Alien Overlords (DAO) do not want me to see the Aurora Borealis, as every evening here in Vermont is completely cloud covered... How can I prepare for the Coronal Mass Ejection that will no doubt precede the axial precession, turning the earth 30 degrees, making Antarctica (ne Atlantis :^) an equatorial continent? The season is spring, and I am now outside rather than tied to my beloved Dell. Thus, I was most satisfied to get VisualBash "menubot.sh" operational. BOSI meets today, May 5th 2024 at 18:00 EST
Greetings List Lurkers, Unbroken days of cloudy overcast with rain have just at this writing broken into warm sunlight! During this waterlogged passage of this past week, I was most satisfied to get my latest VisualBash creation "menubot.sh" operational. (http://docbox.flint.com:8081/visual.bash#menubot.sh). What this does is take a proposed help menu and constructs a VisualBash "FED" framework within which you concoct the functions necessary to get the job done. The program currently exists in draft form, a rewrite will arrive with more May showers. Using menubot.sh we now can see the completion of the Zope2 containerization project. The first VisualBash to come out of this "interpreter-interpreter" is a VisualBash script for the management of the Zope2 system that DTG and I virtual-ized last month. you cannot imagine how gratifying it is to have finally made some progress, and it works on the web site! Once MMS (Monday Morning Syndrome) ends - say Tuesday, I will be back burnishing this to make even more of my life VisualBash script driven... The open question as posed by Eric-the-weasel was, why not end your suffering and develop Bash scripts using AI. His first suggestion was horrible. His suggestion was to use Micro$oft Co Pilot. What a mistake! Not only do they want to softly force you to the Visual Studio Editor intellectual ghetto, but to add insult to injury, they want to charge you $10/month for the privilege! However do not despair, as the question remains; can I use Chat GPT to generate VisualBash scripts? I particularly want a shell generator that takes the menubot.sh result and based upon the contents of the menu generates the VisualBash Function slugs. Note that the Evaluator and the Dispatcher are now already created by menubot.sh. God and Dave-The-Geek help me... This is a work in progress to be continued as long as the sun does not shine here in Vermont. Could this methodology empower our adventures into Home Assistant? ...so more about these foolish ideas is available this Monday evening at 6 PM at the York Library. This all adds up to our centralizing and convocating at the York Branch Library this evening. BOSI meets today, April 29th 2024 at 18:00 EST
Mon 29 Apr 2024 12:43:53 PM EDT Greetings List Lurkers, Blue sky research is morphed into gunmetal grey skies here in Vermont... I have been working on how to neaten, organize display, operate and trouble shoot the digital systems in my media room. I am satisfied with what I have developed, it involves carpeting, three types of velcro and hot glue... I am so happy with this I may post pictures! Thanks to DTG and a fair amount of brain grease we now can see the completion of the Zope2 containerization project. After further thought I continue working on Visual bash scripts for the Zope2 containerization It has been gratifying to have finally made some progress and once MMS (Monday Morning Syndrome) ends - say Tuesday, I will be back burnishing this to be visual bash script driven... The gang at last weeks meeting gave me a better understanding of command environment functions verses aliases. The Bash command structure which allows you to load functions into your Bash command environment This reminds me of Leo Brodie's Forth, and is very neat. For more info on this monster please see: http://docbox.flint.com:8081/visual.bash#BashAlias I expect to edit and correct this promptly. Can I use Chat GPT to generate VisualBash scripts? I particularly want a shell generator that takes the help menu based upon the contents of the menu generates the VisualBash Function slugs, the Evaluator and the Dispatcher. The program currently exists in draft form as: http://docbox.flint.com:8081/visual.bash/#menubot.sh God and Dave-The-Geek help me... Additionally, I am revising the following script: lxcycl.sh - The LinuX Container CYCle (http://docbox.flint.com:8081/docker#LinxXContainercYCL) This is an attempt to recursively encapsulate the tools you need to perform docker based development. This kind of script is mostly to allow me to learn and retain my foo in docker development. Whether this script is necessary depends on my mastery of the "docker" noun-verb name-space as time goes on. This unworthy efforts is up on GitHub as I finished mercilessly editing lxcycl.sh. Greetings List Lurkers, Two sure things in life, death and taxes... The taxes are due today, we know not the day nor the hour of the former... BOSI meets today, April 1st 2024 at 18:00 EST
Mon 25 Mar 2024 12:18:54 PM EDT Greetings List Lurkers, I made a snowman last Sunday, and I may make another this Friday... Winter, which is still here even though it should be Spring, requires that I state that our meeting tonight will take place at the regular time and place at the York Library. Tonight's subject will be installing Windows 12 as your bare metal on a used laptop. Clothing optional... Anal repercussions shall be discussed. :^) Spring... Meh... When I am not frantically working on my Income Taxes, (http://docbox.flint.com:8081/pyrs) I continue working on Visual bash scripts for the Zope2 containerization and I got Google Drive to behave at a command line. Seriously, The question I have for this meeting is: Can I use Chat GPT to generate VisualBash scripts? I particularly want a shell generator that takes the help menu based upon the contents of the menu generates the VisualBash Function slugs, the Evaluator and the Dispatcher. The program currently exists as: http://docbox.flint.com:8081/visual.bash/#menubot.sh May the Accademia Dell'Arte help me... In addition am burnishing the following new script: lxcycl.sh - The LinuX Container CYCle (http://docbox.flint.com:8081/docker#LinxXContainercYCL or https://github.com/flintiii/lxcycl) This is an attempt to recursively encapsulate the tools you need to perform docker based development. This kind of script is mostly to allow me to learn and retain my foo in docker development. This unworthy effort is up on GitHub as I finished mercilessly editing lxcycl.sh. Please pull it and fix it. ...so more about these foolish ideas (like going up against ROKU) this Monday evening at 6PM. This all adds up to our centralizing and convocating at the York Branch Library this evening. That said, come in remotely and bring this and any other problems and questions and we will do our thing! Greetings List Lurkers, Springtime is turning it's jaundiced eyes towards a rebirth... Winter requires that I state that our meeting tonight will take place at the regular time and place at the York Library. BOSI meets today, March 11th 2024 at 18:00 EST
Greetings List Lurkers, The snow has returned with a vengeance... That said we are gonna do what all Vermonters do, which is to ignore it. Our meeting tonight will take place at the regular time and place at the York Library. So I have to add to our endless project list the configuration of Libre Elec. As we told the tale last week... To repeat, one week ago Saturday night was quite an event. My beloved wife and I are down in the media room watching old BBC Procedurals. Poirot finishes and a message originating from the ROKU box says you have to agree to a contract modification. You have no choice but to say "Yes". At first I thought it a malicious hack of my ROKU converter... Later I discover that ROKU is attempting to make me agree to a contract under duress. This is causing a bit of a stir... For more information please see: https://community.roku.com/t5/Community-discussions/Discussion-Roku-Dispute-Resolution-Term-Update/td-p/950649 ...our response to this is... Dave and I found a pi 4, loaded the FOSS Libre Elec media player, and I ended up with working Netflix and YouTube by suppertime...the bad news is that YouTube eventually punked out. Once we have all this FOSS TV under operational control I am gonna suggest that UVM Fablab: https://uvmfablab.net/workshops-for-the-uvm-community/ Do a workshop on how to do this. Wish us Luck. I did get google drive hooked to the Libre Elec to my Google Drive (big win for me:^). Later this afternoon I am working on Visual bash scripts for Libre Elec and getting back to getting Google Drive to behave at a command line. The Blue Pill
Greetings, I wanted to get back to you on a Free Open Source (FOSS) replacement for your ROKU device. At this time I can only recommend this fix to external ROKU IP to HDMI converters such as the Model: 3930X, I purchased one of these several years ago. You will need to replace this box and power supply with a Raspberry Pi Model 4 or better. Once the hardware is installed I recommend following these instructions: https://wiki.libreelec.tv/ You will need to download the binary, transfer to SD Card Insert SD Card into Pi4 Attach a keyboard to PI4 Power Card ' The unit should boot and make available the LibreELEC IP to HDMI program. Note this is a different beast of a program. Explore... Enjoy... ...Most of all... Feel the freedom. Re: BOSI meets today, February 19th 2024 at 18:00 EST at York Library.
Greetings List Lurkers, Chance again delivered to us a sunny Monday which forebodes an evening meeting that will likely be cold but clear... I am overjoyed that Mr. Joe Hart rescued a Sharp Brain PW-A900 from the landfill road. It is a Japanese to English translator. Our Shogun is threatening to liberate this beastie using the information at BrainUX.org "A Linux disto for SHARP Brain". Seems ambitious... My own ambitions revolve around how many of the "Noun Verbs"(NVs) (or "Verb Noun" environments) I need to exploit for my own enjoyment. Again, these typically command line based environments are in contrast to compilers, games, GUI tools and utilities. To repeat, these NV script types of software exist to perform narrow activities on systems, exemplified by their use at the command line. Besides LinuX Containers (LXCs), examples are everywhere, and appear particularly obvious in the Linux command line environment. Think of the classic "bird call" commands e.g. grep, awk, ls, or any other command you can manifest on a "Teletype" command line. The good ones most support a "man" page... I say this because I use an NV system to write my various software concoctions, which I finish and deliver in VisualBash (http://visualbash.org/). In a personal approach to learning the NVs, what I want are Visual Bash functions that illustrate the use of NVs, so that I can rely on working Visual Bash examples. This method brought success to my understanding of Git and its ugly daddy GitHub, I have somewhat puzzled out this with the help of the Adult Swim gang. (see https://github.com/flintiii/TenStatementGit) Just trying to organize NVs is a bit of a pain. Docker, Podman & Distrobox are all related to Linux Containers. My ambition is to have them all working and their pitfalls understood (https://github.com/flintiii/lxcycl/blob/main/lxcycl.sh) is a work in progress to accomplish this. At this very moment I am particularly interested in getting Google Drive to behave. This may involve a script to test and consistently mount your Google Drive, but right now it is not consistent, I am working on it. Again, this is all based upon my immediate goal which is to get my currently used version of zope2 running in a container... A critical ambition. Progress to date has most to do with developing these tasks: 1. Container management loading and persistence 2. Getting the right version of Python running and finally... 3. Coerce zope2.10 to run in this container. 4. Load the right data.fs file... 5. Reproduce-ability This bit of programming is dramatized in the ongoing Visual Bash script: http://docbox.flint.com:8081/visual.bash#MyOwnPersonalVersionOfHell Other random NVs I am interested in include, but are not limited to: - ffmpeg - gstreamer NV implentation... too much? - gstreamer - a multimedia contender - obs-cli- an OBS controller written in go? As I mentioned last week, I concocted the following new script: lxcycl.sh - The LinuX Container CYCle (http://docbox.flint.com:8081/docker#LinxXContainercYCL) This is an attempt to recursively encapsulate the tools you need to perform docker based development. These unworthy efforts will be up on GitHub after I finish mercilessly editing lxcycl.sh should be ready before the meeting... ...so more about these foolish ideas this Monday evening at 6PM. This all adds up to our centralizing and convocating at the York Branch Library this evening. I am also gonna bring along the newest and latest Raspberry Pi zero kit. I want this to be the center of a universal battery tester... Note that Shogun Joe says this may be too ambitious... That said, come in remotely and bring this and any other problems and questions and we will do our thing! This evening beyond the Library face-2-face, we shall use jit.si/bosi to connect. Re: BOSI meets today, February 19th 2024 at 18:00 EST at York Library.
Greetings List Lurkers, A sunny Monday forebodes an evening meeting that will likely be cold but clear... I remain confident that Mr. Joe Hart will choose this evening's meeting to demonstrate his LlamaCPP large language model speech recognition system. Also we need to discuss his new nickname... Right now I am overwhelmed by what I must learn from The University of Youtube. This includes but is not limited to: - Google Drive - Git & - GitHub - Docker - Podman - ffmpeg - gstreamer - obs-cli I feel I have been hit on the head, and I am not making progress in the face of overwhelming innovation... My meditation centers on how many of these "Noun Verbs"(NVs) (or "Verb Noun" environments) I am trying to exploit. Re: BOSI meets today, February 5th 2024 at 18:00 EST at York Library.
Mon 12 Feb 2024 12:51:09 PM EST Greetings List Lurkers, Another overcast Monday evening meeting that will likely bring a couple of inches of snow early Tuesday morning... I am still hopefully looking for Mr. Joe Hart at this meeting to demonstrate his LlamaCPP large language model speech recognition system. Also we need to discuss his new nickname... Otherwise I continue my attempted conquest of docker. My thinking here is that Docker, is one of a class of utilities that I can call "Noun Verbs"(NVs), that is, in contrast to compilers, games, GUI tools and utilities. These NV script types of software exist to perform narrow activities on systems, exemplified by their use at the command line. Besides LinuX Containers (LXCs), examples are everywhere, and appear particularly obvious in the Linux command line environment. I say this because I use an NV system to write my various software concoctions, which I write in VisualBash (http://visualbash.org/). Based upon my need to renovate my Zope web based note files, I intend to continue to attempt to encapsulate my Zope2 habit into a Docker (or Podman :^) container. The trick here is to get Zope running in a container with the correct version of Python so the "Pickle" function. Progress to date has most to do with developing these tasks: 1. Container management loading and persistence 2. Getting the right version of Python running and finally... 3. Coerce zope to run in this container. 4. Load the right data.fs file... 5. Reproduce ability This bit of programming is dramatized in the initial Visual Bash script: http://docbox.flint.com:8081/visual.bash#MyOwnPersonalVersionOfHell What I have discovered upon development of this script is that I could be more efficient in the development of a specific limited choice NV script, well documented script. In the last week, I concocted the following new script: lxcycl.sh - The LinuX Container CYCle (http://docbox.flint.com:8081/docker#LinxXContainercYCL) This is an attempt to recursively encapsulate the tools you need to perform docker based development. These unworthy efforts will be up on GitHub after I finish mercilessly editing... ...but more about these foolish ideas this Monday evening at 6PM. This all adds up to our centralizing and convocating at the York Branch Library this evening. That said, come in remotely and bring this and any other problems and questions and we will do our thing! This evening beyond the Library face-2-face, we shall use jit.si/bosi to connect. Feel free to click the following link to join... Come on to Jitsi at 6PM! Greetings List Lurkers, The sun is Shining!!! We here at Casa Flint have finally been granted the precious gift of HEALTH! Dame Judith got her furniture!! and to top it off, Joe Hart at this meeting may demonstrate his LlamaCPP large language model speech recognition system, of which I am totally ignorant. ...this is quite a bit of good news... No more "Coughing Covid". This all adds up to our centralizing and convocating at the York Branch Library this evening. My own efforts will be up on GitHub in a bit. BOSI meets today, January 29th 2024 at 18:00 EST REMOTE ONLY!!
Greetings List Lurkers, The good news... My beloved wife managed to get rid of what I am calling "Coughing Covid". While this has been going on for some weeks I only on Saturday got the inspiration to test her after a week, and sure enough the Covid test came back NEGATIVE... That said, my test moments ago came back POSITIVE... Consequently, we cannot meet at the York Branch Library this evening. As our present Winter snows persist, this is the time for more computer and software tinkering... The season is upon us! Unfortunately this is the flu season as well... I intend to continue to attempt to encapsulate my Zope2 habit into a Docker (or Podman :^) container the trick here is to get Zope running in a container with the correct versions of Python Pickle. Progress to date has most to do with 1. Container management loading and persistence 2. Getting the right version of Python running and finally... 3. Coerce zope to run. 4. Load the right data.fs file... To understand this particular pickle, you got to get the underlying concept of the Z Object Programming Environment which is that Zope stores everything in a Python Pickle. Very cool. The problem comes when you switch versions of Python. Basically I am having a case of "versionitus" in the Zope system I must have version 2.10 of Zope's Python Pickle function. It appears that the current data.fs file may be running under Python 2.6, not 2.4... So I keep grinding. We are getting better at curating old versions of Python... That said, come in remotely and bring this and any other problems and questions and we will do our thing! This evening as we do, thanks to "Coughing Covid", we shall use jit.si/bosi to connect. Greetings List Lurkers, I am in a pickle... The Snow Squall yesterday was scenic but did little actual damage... As Winter means more computer and software tinkering, the season is upon us. Sadly we are not hacking the Android Fire Tablets to operate LineageOS. We are currently stuck not being able to root the fire tablet, and we have not made much progress... This could change... That said, a new monster has come into my life. A Pickle Monster... DTG and I have been trying to encapsulate my Zope2 habit into a Docker (or Podman :^) container for a few years, and DTG and I made a breakthrough a few weeks ago, and got Zope running in a docker container! Greetings List Lurkers, The new year proceeds smoothly... The most well behaved snow storm came to town last night... - No electricity outage - No internet outage - Good supplies... To top it off: - Anthony Carrico (A local deity :^) Has written some cool software for us to play with this evening... https://github.com/acarrico/isctty/blob/master/isctty.c - Kevin Cole has produced something of note, an mp4 which we gotta post somewhere... Fitfully, we continue hacking the Android Fire Tablets to operate LineageOS. We are currently stuck not being able to root the fire tablet, and we have not made much progress. Again, we really need to include ideas for new projects. Winter means more computer and software tinkering, the season is upon us... 2024 - The New Year Dawns... BOSI meets today, January 1st 2024 at 18:00 EST
Well, Happy New Year!!! As mentioned in our Christmas dis-invite, the stress of the season and the relatives, friends and other hangers on reached a crescendo... and as they vacated the main oil heat in the house here in Barre City shut down, and for New Years Eve and Day we have been relying solely on the Propane fireplace inserts and affection to keep ourselves warm. "Tis not the season to be purchasing heating oil filters and accessories" So New Year's Day finds me chillier and chillier. I predict snow here before the weeks end... Other than this minor inconvenience, I would say we have welcomed in the new year with style and grace. Our greatest concern for Joe and family in Japan. As far as I can tell, the temblor hit Ishikawa prefecture, which is on the other side of the island from where the Harts are. This will no doubt come up at the meeting... We need to restart hacking the Android Fire Tablets to operate LineageOS. We are currently stuck not being able to root the fire tablet, but we are getting closer with the addition of central heating, Winter means more computer and software tinkering, the season is upon us... The good news is that the Pentadome (http://docbox.flint.com/~flint/pinwheel/pentadome) our summer project is still standing on the slopes at SugarTower, and you can get there by snowshoe. Again, we really need to include ideas for new projects. That said, bring this and any other problems and questions and we will do our thing! This evening as we do, we shall again gather at the York Library, it is an excellent facility, and located at... 135 Mill Street, in East Barre. https://www.google.com/search?q=135+Mill+Street%2C+in+East+Barre.=135+Mill+Street%2C+in+East+Barre.=chrome..69i57j33i160l2.974j0j4=chrome=UTF-8 Again, this meeting accommodates remote participation, I will let Jit.si do the heavy lifting, it seems to work just fine. We had a combined Birthday Party on Friday one cannot party on a Monday night. The snow is abating and... the Pentadome is apparently still standing gonna go check it right now... We have 6" of heavy wet snow, but no lost of: * Power and A small bit of * Internet connectivity, which at this time (12:30 PM) has returned. The good news is that the Pentadome is aparently still standing during this storm. The real good news is that unless plans change we will NOT be meeting at the Library in East Barre. Greetings List Lurkers, We got another 6" of heavy wet snow, but we did not lose Power and Internet! The Pentadome (http://docbox.flint.com/~flint/pinwheel/20231130_094915.jpg) is still standing after the recent snowstorm. The good news is we shall meet tonight at the East Barre Library as usual... Last week's major announcement is that we have a Dell XPS running Macintosh Catalina under KVM under Docker... In full screen mode it is remarkable, and will likely how to get the sound working could become the subject of tonight's discussion. Additionally we want to see if we can get Haiku running in a Docker Container https://github.com/hectorm/docker-qemu-haiku as well... This is very cool! Rather slowly, we continue hacking the Android Fire Tablets to operate LineageOS. We are currently stuck not being able to root the fire tablet, and we have not made much progress. We May take a mulligan and try to get the Graphine OS (https://grapheneos.org/) working... Again, we really need to include ideas for new projects. Winter means more computer and software tinkering, the season is absolutely upon us... My personal goal remains to get SugarTower organized. Greetings List Lurkers, My fun 24 hour day flu was vanquished by Wednesday last week. Thank you all for your concern! Damn! I fear that circumstances continue to conspire to keep me from shipping the Android to Joe in Japan. Exactly how we get hardware to Joe (and maybe back from) is the big question Simultaneously we continue hacking the Android Fire Tablets to operate LineageOS. We are currently stuck not being able to root the fire tablet, and we have not made much progress. With me being of delicate health, things are very slow in this area... Anyway send in your ideas for new projects. As I mentioned Winter means more computer and software tinkering, the season is upon us... We had the concluding bonfire at SugarTower last night. Greetings List Lurkers, Chilly fall days have turned even chillier and chillier... Regarding my prediction of snow by last weeks end, we had 0.5" at SugarTower... The good news is that the sun brings the temperature to bearable by noon. I fear that my case of icosahedron grows worse every day... Winter means more computer and software tinkering, the season is practically upon us... My personal goal remains to get SugarTower organized. I also have some rages I want to post, I expect to have these screeds online soon. One is about the future of Central Vermont in the light of Transponomics. The other is about Post Mills... That said, bring this and any other problems and questions and we will do our thing! Re: BOSI meets today, Monday June 10th 2023 at 18:00 EST
Greetings List Lurkers, Wild times here in central Vermont. If I find one more power supply Dame Judith's Linux Mint box shall ship. The dosen half-gig SSDs for use in refurbishing the units that I intend to distribute to such notables as Dame Judith are working well. The bad news is the power supplies I glommed from DTG are 12 Volt and not 18 Volt, so I need to get up to SugarTower and get the 18 Volt supplies, but it is simply too wet. I am going to try after I finish this missive. Thus another project slips... I did get an announcement out to the IBM VM community about my latest project, BaByBearVM (http://bbbvm.org/) . Greetings List Lurkers, What a ride... As we rounded the 1300-odd miles back to New England we were greeted by the Canadian forest fire smog Last night it rained and this gave way to a clear morning... Two great successes accompanied us on this trip. We got to see our boy Effin in Pittsburgh Wednesday afternoon, despite being an hour late for our appointment. The folks at the gates were very kind and sympathetic to our tardiness. >From there we headed to the VM Workshop convention, got to our hotel and endured rain for Thursday. Friday was dry, cloudy but filled with the success of our BOSI edited talk "Ten Statement Fortran". The demo actually created a bit of an understated sensation. This demo may be the birth of a new BOSI initiative, likely part of our discussions in the meeting this evening. Our ride, the Nissan X Terra carried us, our stuff and our electric bikes with no problems... Basically this was a triumph we can discuss during the meeting tonight. Traveling to the City of Columbus Ohio, arriving by Friday afternoon in order to give a talk called "Ten Statement Git" to a bunch of Mainframers was just perfect... Friday evening we went to a wonderful festival in Columbus' Colgate Park called Com-fest (https://www.comfest.com/). Very exciting! As I mentioned before, this evening you will likely be proposed to regarding a new BOSI project. I will say more then, Dame Judith, as I squinted at other presentations proffered at the convocation, I praised you in my mind. Fortune smiled on Debian based rag-tag fleet of cast-off laptops. The irony of Red Hat's new restrictions on source code access rang a bell from the past as IBM had done something similar over 30 years ago to VM called Object Code Only (OCO) distribution, where they closed the source for VM. Being Debian based thus was very nice Tonight's topics really need to include this idea for a new project. I am most happy to present this new project idea. That said, bring this and any other problems and questions and we will do our thing! Re: BOSI meets today, June 19th 2023 at 18:00 EST
Greetings List Lurkers, Happy Junteenth! New England weather sun, then clouds... We leave for the convention and a likely brief meeting in Pittsburgh Wednesday evening. I am frantically trying to get the Nissan X Terra tuned to operational userfullness... We night drive to Pittsburgh, arrive sometime Thursday, stop by and visit Effin. Then the next trick involves traveling to the City of Columbus Ohio arriving by Friday afternoono in order to give a talk called "Ten Statement Git" to a bunch of Mainframers... Sadly,as I mentioned before, this evening you will likely be victims and guinea pigs for finalizing the presentation, which I represent will be "fun"! Dame Judith has done a masterful job of criticism, for this I am blessed. We are bringing with us our rag-tag fleet of cast-off laptops. We shall see what fortune finds in Columbus. Thanks Rick for your donation! Tonight's topics really need to include Ten Statement Git... I am very nervous about this presentation. That said, bring this and any other problems and questions and we will do our thing! Greetings List Lurkers, Beautiful day for a convocation The latest at Casa Flint is we now have a non-leaking porch roof, and the floor in the kitchen is being torn asunder... The next trick involves traveling to the City of Columbus Ohio June 22nd in order to give a talk called "Ten Statement Git" to a bunch of Mainframers... Sadly,as I mentioned before, you will likely be victims and guinea pigs for this, which I represent will be "fun" So to continue the quest, we need another couple of old windows laptops to bespoke Linux-ize and get to folks who need them. I need to go visit my man Rick and pick up another candidate, hopefully tomorrow... These used laptops shall all have worthy homes... Tonight's topics are again in the air... Likely Ten Statement Git... Multi audio interfaces in an open source environment...Maybe Genealogy... Hercules...more Visual Bash... Jamulus... we can always butcher a monitor for fun if anyone is up to it! That said, bring your problems and questions and we will do our thing! BOSI meets today, March 27th 2023 at 18:00 EST
Greetings List Lurkers, Spring is finally coming to this godforsaken country... The really good news is that last Monday, as I was out getting a cup of coffee, Big Jim stopped into the York Branch and gave us a very nice Toshiba! It came loaded with Linux Mint!!! Our cups runneth over... Thanks Jim. This laptop will soon be out in the community earning it's keep as you earn our sincere thanks Big Jim. So we need about another couple of old windows laptops to bespoke Linux-ize and get to folks who need them. These used laptops shall have worthy homes... Kevin and I are currently rubbing antennae on an Enki installer. More to come! Something always comes up... Probably Ten Statement Git... Maybe Genealogy... Maybe more Enki / ReST... We may butcher a monitor for fun! That said, bring your problems and questions and we will do our thing! This evening we shall again gather at the York Library, it is an excellent facility, and located at: 135 Mill Street, in East Barre. https://www.google.com/search?q=135+Mill+Street%2C+in+East+Barre.=135+Mill+Street%2C+in+East+Barre.=chrome..69i57j33i160l2.974j0j4=chrome=UTF-8 Again, this meeting accommodates remote participation, I will let Jit.si do the heavy lifting, it seems to work just fine. Greetings List Lurkers, Stanley (ma man :^) send a short note about his Wiz bulb experience... > I love wiz bulbs! I have a bunch of “can light” ones I bought at Home Depot on clearance. > There’s a nice python library and they work with home assistant. > Mine are only 2.4ghz but the iPhone app to join them seems to instruct them to join a 5ghz net though. I downloaded the Python pip file for (Python 3.7 curse you versions! :^) and magically ended up with an executable called wizlight. As this executable works in bash, I am overjoyed with these things. No doubt I will enhance / rebuild Home Assistant merely to support these bulbs. Gonna show off these at the BOSI Adult Swim meeting tonight (weather permitting) The best deal I have found was a deal on controllable light bulbs from "Wiz", 4 for $18.00... They work well under Linux! I hope to demonstrate at the BOSI Adult Swim meeting this evening at 6 PM. I am going to try to hook up via my phone this evening... Oh well... Greetings Again List Lurkers, The BOSI Adult Swim meets this evening at 6 PM. Finding a laptop that I can use without incident is beginning to bedevil me... Should I try this gnarly old Toshibe (with a full size keyboard:^), or should I go with the Thinkpad that has the bad backspace key... I gotta look around for other alternatives but we shall see... All I want for this New Years meeting is trouble free Audio Visual... That said, bring your problems and questions and we will do our thing! Re: BOSI meets today, January 2nd 2023 at 18:00 EST
Greetings List Lurkers, Happy New Year! The BOSI Adult Swim meets this evening at 6 PM. Hard to believe that we have been in operation for over 16 years... Other good news is that last week we had good jit.si connectivity at the library, This is becoming more and more important, as the POS laptop I'm using is most temperamental. Last week we delved into Chatbot GPT and stable diffusion. My takeaway is that these apparently open source products rely on that closed source world of Neural Networks, which by their very nature are closed source Artificial Intelligences with various Application Programming Interfaces (API)s. I am interested in continuing to explore this odd world, In this spirit I will attempt to pair program with Copilot. Due to the fact that this requires use of the Open Source Micro$oft Visual Studio Editor (VSE), I am proceeding with extreme caution. I need to get a decent keyboard mapping on this sucker (Anyone ever heard of SAA-CUA? :^). Once things start swinging, who knows what will happen. AI is like software development on roller skates with Jet Packs... That said, bring your problems and questions and we will do our thing! BOSI meets today, December 19th 2022 at 18:00 EST snow day...
Greetings List Lurkers, The BOSI Adult Swim meets this evening at 6 PM. Good news is last week we had good jit.si connectivity at the library, but last week the RJ-45 patch cable acted up, so I am gonna make and test a replacement cable. If conditions allow, I may go and test the new cable (and the old cable :^), but more likely we will be back in COVID mode - meh... That said, bring your problems and questions and we will do our thing! Last meeting we explored the wonderful and confusing world of AI chatbots. Note that now that we have determined that OpenAI's ChatGPT is not open source, DTG demonstrated Stable Diffusion, which is open source (DTG downloaded the source and learning files.) Note at this time the messages you get may be that the system is overwhelmed. Not hard to believe. We will no doubt continue to explore this issue tonight. This evening I advise you not to go the York Library, while it is an excellent facility, and located at: 135 Mill Street, in East Barre. I already have heard about some auto incidents in the snow and ice... Instead, come on remote to Jitsi at 6PM! Adult Swim goes on vacation...
Greetings List Lurkers, After sixteen years of meetings and service to the community here in Barre, Vermont, we find the need for a hiatus. I for one need a few weeks to perform planning and infrastructure adjustments. Thus I am declaring that at least for this week we shall not have a meeting. Thank you and... Final Adult Swim Meetings at Hedding Methodist Church
Greetings List Lurkers It appears that the Barre Open Systems Institute Adult Swim activity at the Hedding United Methodist church will be concluding this Halloween. The space is needed this winter to house homeless families. That said it has been a very satisfying twelve years of community based activity. Thus I am inviting members of the Barre Open Systems Institute Adult Swim program to one last meeting in the church basement in order to go through and get personal items such as tools, test equipment, meters. etc. prior to our beginning moving the bulk of the equipment to the new location. I suspect that this meeting will be both in person and via video conference. Note that the Video aspect may be a bit rough as the folks in the room will have only one working connection due to audio issues. Lets hope for the best! ...anyway... Come on to Jitsi at 6PM!
