When we used to fish the trophy area below Table Rock Dam, we'd see what we called fish slappers standing less than five feet apart on both sides of the outflows from the fishery. They'd have just about the length of the rod out just keep drifting a fly through the current, lift slap it back up flow. -Original Message- From: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com [mailto:vfb-mail@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of jerryp...@comcast.net Sent: Sunday, August 10, 2014 12:10 PM To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: [VFB] Tenkara Anyone? Wes: That's the one. It's a cheap way to try tenkara fishing. You can put a loop on the piece of fly line you want to and do a loop to eye connection. Another way, as I found out by accident, the one I bought had a butt cap on it which came off and I could have popped the tip top off and threaded the fly line through the rod and seated it with some Goop or flexible cement. Cabela's recommendation that the line shouldn't be longer than the rod is right on the money. If you're planning on using a leader, you might want to make a bit shorter. He'd brought a tenkara rod back from Japan which set the owner back $300. He showed us how to rig it and demonstrated a bit of casting. I had a chance to exam in the rod and it looked familiar to me. Reminded of the long cane poles we sometime used for crappie fishing when I was in college in NW Tennessee. Went home and rummaged through my Cabela's catalog and came across telescoping graphite crappie poles, ranged from 10 to 14 feet in length. I ordered a 10 footer and when I got it I took it to the shop and we compared it with the Tenkara rod very little difference even manufactured by the same company except the price which was $275 less than the shop owner. I used it a couple of times but it's tough to use a 10 foot rod. Still if folks are interested in getting into tenkara fishing, it's an inexpensive way to get started. Back in the early 50's, my father actually made three bamboo surf rods from straight bamboo. He tied the guides on and the Penn reel was held on with hose clamps. The handle was nothing more then black electrical tape rapped around the base. I actually remember him catching eels in the Hudson River. We took them down the Jersey Shore and used them in the surf. Re: [VFB] Tenkara Anyone?
I grew up with 10 foot long bamboo poles with very fine tips..about the same in size as the ones on my 5 wt fly rod. There was a line, tied to the very tip and half hitched down about a foot for strength, that we cast out, and often didn't use a bobber as then the worm (Yikes..we were bait fishers) would quickly sink to the bottom. Then we'd slowly slide the line in toward shore. Sounds like the same technique would work with the tenkara rods. My friend, Eddie Robinson, of the fly shop by the same name, says he uses his regular fly rod just like this all the time in our rivers with good results and, of course, using a fly. Re: [VFB] Tenkara Anyone?
When we used to out to Reelfoot lake when I was in college they had a couple rows of cane poles on the porch of the bait shop. Being more sophisticated than the locals we use our spinning gear. Still can't explain how those folks with the cane poles always ended up with a bunch of slabs, while we caught the 8 to 12 inch crappie. Bluefish ain't bad, you just have to cook them right. You cook them on a cedar plank over the grill, when they're done you throw away the bluefish and eat the cedar plank. I like the snapper blues 10-18 inches long. Filleted and pan fried the same day they're pretty tasty. Jerry C - Original Message - FREE FOOD but I wouldn't eat those eel's. My dad used to go out on a party boat after work on Friday nights and come back just around dawn with Blue fish they caught. I hated that also. Very oily and fishy tasting. phxflytyer Phoenix,AZ Any man who thinks he can be happy and prosperous by letting the Government take care of him; better take a closer look at the American Indian. I think bamboo 'poles' (actually just long bamboo stalks) were about 2 or 3 bucks back then. And did we catch fish? Yes. During WWII, that was 'free' food. a. -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group.
