Back in the early 50's, my father actually made three bamboo surf rods from straight bamboo. He tied the guides on and the Penn reel was held on with hose clamps. The handle was nothing more then black electrical tape rapped around the base. I actually remember him catching eels in the Hudson River. We took them down the Jersey Shore and used them in the surf.
