You need to get a lot more specific. Like where this needs to be shot
would help. I've never heard of Beth Geisel. I doubt many others here
have either. You should at least provide a URL that isn't broken. You
need to put brackets around any long URL or go get a tiny url.

What scandal?
Where is he?
Who is he?
When do you need it by?
Why do you need it?

2005-08-18 Thread chris_koehn

That's why I asked if anyone was interested to email me. Are you in the area?

You can cut and paste that URL if you are interested. It's not broken, it takes you right to
the main story that sums up the situation. It will answer most of your questions and
emailing me will answer the rest.

Again I ask that whoever is interested to email me. If you can't make the URL work, or
think emailing me is too much hassle then you are probably not who I am looking for in
the first place. I need someone with enthusiasm and the willingness to be a volunteer. Of
course I don't want to ask someone to travel across the universe at their own expense
unless they REALLY want to. Like I said, email me for more info...

Great that you will be attending the conference and will vlog it in your news vblog. I hope you got a free pass as it seems to be the rule for the attendees who will talk about the sessions in their blog.

About video blogging: I do not see it in the program and there was no word about it yesterday.

[videoblogging] Re: MPEG 1 Audio in Quicktime Pro

2005-08-18 Thread johngaltsjournal

I have this problem because I use a still cam for my videos. The reason why you dont hear
the audio is because the audio track is muxed (slammed into the video track).

I use ffmpegX to convert it to an avi file. Then it's editable! (It's a pain having to convert
everything, but at least it makes the footage usable..)

I think you can find a copy of ffmpegX on versiontracker.com

If you still have problems, feel free to email off-list.

that up into TiVo Desktop (or better yet reverse engineer the transfer
mechanism so one software package can aggregate video and transfer
it to
the TiVo and call it a day) and we'll be watching vlogs on our TVs

Well, technically a TiVo is a (specialized) PC. ;) Anyway, I'm really
wishing I had the time/money to get a MythTV box up and running (yeah,
you've heard me say this before) because I think it could be a killer

Writing you own apps to do video aggregation should be quite easy.

I also caught our little local video on my way home from dinner last night, but since I was a bit more than tipsy, I didn't edit the file last night and haven't uploaded it yet. Probably later today, if the video actually came out.

I hope someone blends all of the vigil footage together.

[videoblogging] Help - Tranferring files from Canon ZR100 to Windows Notebook

2005-08-18 Thread Tim D

Hey everyone,

I turn to your wisdom and guidance because I am all out of ideas.
What I thought would be a simple process has turned into a
hair-pulling-task. I recently received a Canon ZR100 MiniDV camcorder
as a gift. I just went out and got a firewire card and cable so I
could transfer videos and get with the times. They work fine. No
more digital still camera video for me...or so I thought! I can't
figure out how to transfer my video from the damn thing. I am all
excited about creating vlog posts with my new toy, but right now I am
ready to throw it out the window. Does anyone have any idea how I
might go about getting my media off of my camera? E-mail me off list
if this is too off-topic. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim

[videoblogging] VidCamera Phones?

2005-08-18 Thread Stephanie Bryant

OK, I'm looking to change cellphone providers and, while I'm at it, cell phones.

My choices are:

Sony Ericsson S710

Siemens S66

Sony Ericsson Z500

Does anyone know anything about these phones and the picture/video
quality? Obviously, one sacrifices a LOT for putting a camera into a
phone, so it's really only for those quick-clip kinds of vlog entries.
Still, it'd be cool to be able to do it, I think.

[videoblogging] Re: Advice needed on computer and camera purchase

2005-08-18 Thread Steve Watkins

Heres what I think:

Mac isnt the only sensible choice, PC for video editing makes sense.
It depends on quite a few factors, such as what you are used to. And
really how much you enjoy the editing software thats available for the
platform is probably the single biggest factor.

Final Cut Pro is not cheap, as your quote demonstrates. Now it is
certainly worth the money if you love it, its a package that is loved
by many, but some people prefer other choices. This may affect the
Mac/PC decision, so I would advise getting a demo of Final Cut Pro
before you spend that sort of money.

Maybe you already know you want to use Final Cut Pro for sure, could
you give some more clues in general as to which of your choices you
are already more certain of, whether youd like the cost to be much
less etc?

Moving on to the power of the machine, I suggest that comes down to
how much of your life you are planning to spend editing compressing
stuff. What sort of volume of workload are we talking about? Are you
going to be editing and encoding minutes or hours of video per week?

The main factors which determine what power of PC you need are how
sophisticated a editing you want to do is, and how long you are going
to want to spend waiting for footage to encode. On the editing front,
I mean for example that there is a great compositing software called
Motion 2 which ships with the full Fina Cut Studio. It makes use of
lots of CPU and graphics card power RAM, in order to try to do as
much stuff in realtime as possible, rather than having to render the
content in non-realtime. Its good because when you are in the middle
of creating something (eg an elaborate title sequence) you can see all
the changes straight awa in high quality, the workflow is smooth and
that means a lot regarding enjoying the process.

Bear in mind that in terms of performance:price ratio, PCs get you
much more bang for your buck. So you could spend less money on a PC
and achieve faster encoding of footage than the equivalently priced Mac.

All PCs and Macs that currently exist will be out of date at certain
things in years. But pretty much all current PCs and Macs can edit
video quite nicely, so if you are still doing the same sorts of things
in 2 years, they wont be obsolete at all. An example of going out of
date as it relates to video editing could be if you are interested in
High Definition video. This takes more power during editing/encoding
missions, so will benefit from increased speed of machines ina year
or 2s time.

If you definately want a Mac but dont like the look of that quote, the
iMac G5's are quite nice and a lot cheaper. Ive got the 2Ghz 20
version, got it a few months back, and its handling video stuff quite
nicely. In contrast the Mac Mini that I got previously was not really
up to the job, it can do it, but I wouldnt want to spend too long per
day using it as an editing machine, just a bit too slow. The Mac is
more enjoyable to use, but the much cheaper PC that sits next to it
beats it hands down for footage compression times. But the PC is more
noisy so its annoying to even have it switched on.

I cant really give any camera advice.

Anyway this is just my opinion, hope its of some use, if I were you Id
spend a while hanging round an Apple sotre and seeing if you like what
you see.

Cheers

 For filmmaking, I know I will need a three-chip camera. I liked

I intend to start with vlogging and then slowly master editing so I

Re: [videoblogging] Re: VidCamera Phones?

2005-08-18 Thread Stephanie Bryant

Pete, when you email your videos to an email address, does Cingular
add any kind of stupid sig file or anything? (Ex: Verizon has a really
dumb 5-paragraph how to open an attachment addendum that they
automatically add, can't turn off, and put above the media file, so if
you have an email gateway that truncates sigs after a specific
character code, the whole thing gets truncated, or not at all but
I digress)

Also, what format are they in?

I'm not really looking for a download-to-the-computer option-- this is
for mobile vlogging only.

Yeah. :o)

So I go to QuickTime Expert Settings, choose 8 frames/second,
Quality: least, Data Rate: a very low number. Then there's a drop-down
menu with a ton of different formats.

If you've got 3ivx, use it. It gives pretty crisp images at low quality.
Otherwise:

Video codex: MPEG-4
Framerate: 6 for PAL, 5 or 10 for NTSC (Someone on this told me to scale
down framerates in even fractions).
Daterate: Start with 5 KB/s - move up if it looks too crappy.

I've used 3ivx (instead of MPEG-4) with 6 frames per second and a datarate
of 10KB/s before. It's pretty good. You can see what's going on fine. My
video was 60x120 so YMMV. If there is a lot of movement (like Bre Pettis
flailing his arms in the air) the low framerate is very noticeable,
otherwise it doesn't matter.

I'll encourage anyone who pushes compression. I'm not a fan of this whole
5 megs per minute is fine when 1.5 megs per minute is just fine. :o)

I've tried a couple of them, but I thought I'd save some time and just
ask, are there any of these formats which lend themselves more to
 crappy-looking video?

If you just want it to look crappy go with an old video codec. Cinepak
with a low datarate should give you a pretty crappy video. :o)

Charles, I have a regular camera phone (no video) with Verizon, and
when I post-by-email (to LiveJournal) or just email a picture to
someone, here's what goes through:

Subject: Whatever I put as the subject of the message
Body: text I enter in the phone.
Verizon's lame this is a camera phone picture, here's how to open it.
If it is video, you need this software.
The image as an attachment.

When I try to post to LJ, there's a simple -- that you can manually
put in to truncate whatever comes after it in the message.
Unfortunately, because Verizon is stupid and lame, it will also
truncate the image so it won't go through to the post. Lame.

(LJ doesn't allow embedding video, so this of course is only a
troubleshooting scheme).

I don't have access to a video camera phone at this time, but Verizon
is pissing me off this week, and Cingular has a switching station down
the block from my house, so I know I'd have a good signal.

YES! I hate blog spammers! Hate Them Hate Them Hate
Them. It got so bad that I disabled comments on my
website until a few weeks ago when I added a
captcha-module to my comments page which is the
annoying Enter the code from this image. I'm not
sure if blogspot offers one or if their is a mod/hack
you can do.

Blog spam, what a waste of bandwidth. I still see
them coming in and waisting my bandwidth when I check
my logs, but at least they're not polluting my website
anymore.

I don't want to take viagra while gambling online!

Re: [videoblogging] New High Definition Vlog.

Kyle,
When you say you are a High Def videoblogger, do you mean that you
are broadcasting movies that are 1080i or 720p (ie: either 1920x1080
pixels or 720x480 pixels)?? I'm fascinated with the way this term,
high-definition is getting used (well, or mis-used)... I keep hearing
a radio station in Philadelphia brag about how they are broadcasting in
High-Definition radio and I see these Kodak disposable HD
still-cameras in the drug stores, and I have no idea what either one of
those things is supposed to mean. (Well, other than misleading the
public by using a term most people don't understand technically and
sounding really cool as a marketing ploy. I get that -- but are those
companies really that willing to lie?)

Technically, if you've shrunk your video down to anything less than
720x480 progressive scan or 1920x1080 interlaced, then it's not HD. If
it is that big, then what happens to people with screens that are
smaller than that? (I can't watch your videos, cause I don't have QT7,
and my 2003 computer isn't fast enough anyway).

And I don't mean to be picking you Kyle -- I truly am fascinated with
how the words high-definition are getting used, and what they mean to

High Definition is specific to to a new digital technology Jen that is enabled ultimately by
the HD Digital Camera (someone correct me if I'm over simplifying it). Quicktime HD (in
particular H.264) is designed to support the quality, while compressing.

Kyle, what camera did you use and what were the H.264 (I assume) settings exactly?

The video was massive and beautiful and loaded right away for me.

Certain things like the internal harddrives I believe have to be in
your original configuration. The 8GB I believe could be added later
just like upgrading to Final Cut Pro from Express. I am going to make
a decision by Monday because there comes a point where you have to
make a decision.

You can always add RAM or more hard drives if you have room. (Most
tower Macs can hold at least two internal hard drives, and have a few
slots for RAM.) I've got 2 40 gig drives now, one of which I'll be
taking out to replace with a 120 gig drive soon.

Thanks again Steve for your thoughts. I met someone else at the NYC

were better than Macs in many ways.

And many Mac users will tell you that they spend their time being
creative with their computers, not dealing with the latest Microsoft
security holes and trying to find the right software drivers... ;)

Yeah just to add,
I'm on a Powerbook G4 and DSL.
I had difficulty watching the video.
The first run through it kept freezing up or chopping up in Play.
So I figured I'ld watch it again after it has loaded, but this time it
chopped up and froze in different places, the same with the third time I
attempted to view.
The audio plays fine.
Some of the shots/(frozen stills) look nice and crisp but overall
most of the footage is pixelated freeze jump.

Awesome! I'm glad to see someone take things to the next level. The

What are you using to do the color extract?

Also, it was nice to see some skating. It is a little surprising that
nobody has created a skateboarding vlog, especially since
skateboarding is hugely popular online.

I had plans this weekend to go down to Mt. Hood for some summer

I'm too old to skate (except for pushing around town) - so sad.

Thanks again for the inspiration!

Started playing well, but then got pretty choppy - seemed like quicktime got a bit confused about the progressive download.  Very nice looking, though!  I'd like to do one of these myself one day...  Also, my window size in safari was -slightly- smaller than the quicktime, so i couldnt back it up or anything (which I wanted to quite a few times to let the video catch up)  Looking at it again, it seems as if some of the shots are progressive or something?  btw, I'm on a powerbook g4 (newest) 1.5 gigs ram, and tiger with the latest quicktime.  SoWe were talking about this in one of the videoconferences I got to be part of last week, interestingly enough...I was asking what HD would do to the content - my first thought is that it feels like a mixture of a movie and a vlog - in a good way, but I do have a certain love of the little videos.  But hey, when I was your age, I had to film my drunken friends in the shower in hi8, so what the fuck do I know? Observations:
First - that footage was beautiful.
Second - 1618kbits/sec is pretty impressive for 960 X 540 video,
30fps, Stereo audio
Third - I have a 1 year old powerbook and it played fairly well
though it ranged between 20 and 30 fps.
Fourth - My processor was at maximum the entire time the video was

I'd love to see a test of this same footage compressed with 3ivx and

Great videos, Kyle. New Age is Amazing, love the shooting, editing and
compression(?).

BTW, is the squirrel part of some theme, I think I've seen him before.

I think I remember reading, or maybe you mentioned in the vid conf one
night that you were getting the new Sony cam, is that what you shot New
Age with?

does anyone know if I am the first High definition video blogger or
 not?

PS make sure you have quicktime 7 for the footage! and a decent
 computer doesn't hurt.

Re: [videoblogging] MPEG 1 Audio in Quicktime Pro

2005-08-18 Thread Adrian Miles

around the 18/8/05 naschmult mentioned about [videoblogging] MPEG 1
Audio in Quicktime Pro that:
Ok. I bought Quicktime Pro to edit and compress and export my mpeg 1
video into quicktime. However when I try to file-export movie to
quicktime.. It doesn't save my freakn' audio from the video clip!!
What the hell!?!?!

Does anyone know how to fix it? I tried everything in the differnt
options and everything. Please let me know..

spend $20 on the QT mpeg plugin . MPEG1/2 is diff. to mpeg4 and so
QuickTime can't legally do stuff with since different licencing. The
problem (I think) is mpeg1 muxes sound and video, so that is why you
lose the sound (I guess QT privileges vision over sound?).

work round.
play video in QT, turn on record and record it separately (i have
students do this all the time as they have still cameras thaqt shoot
mpeg1 format).
install http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/index.php
get the mpeg plugin for QT

and before everyone whines. MPEG1 was ratified in 1991, and pretty
much deprecated in mid 90s, it is 14 years old and a real clunky
format. There are ways to get into it, but if a computer year = 7
normal years then you're trhing to open up someting that is 98 years
old. Imagine that was a car, then you'd understand that you just
wouldn't assume that your contemporary tools and equipment and spare
parts would work/fit with your 1904 whatever it might be.

Re: [videoblogging] crappy-looking video

2005-08-18 Thread Adrian Miles

around the 18/8/05 Philip Clark mentioned about [videoblogging]
crappy-looking video that:
I've tried a couple of them, but I thought I'd save some time and just
ask, are there any of these formats which lend themselves more to
crappy-looking video?

set a low data rate, large pixel size, and have a lot of action. if
it is still then you just can't do it without a lot of effort. Also
qt pro will give more control, but you want to over ride presets so
that you drop data rate, bump up frame rate, and resolution.

Re: [videoblogging] MPEG 1 Audio in Quicktime Pro

2005-08-18 Thread David Wolf

Hi,

Quicktime doesn't like to deal with muxed (audio and video in one
file) mpeg files when it comes to exporting. You need something to
use something else to de-mux them. ffmpeg is good for this but Mpeg
Streamclip is probably easier as it is designed specifically for this.

Basically it is a handy little tool for taking mpeg files and
converting them into Quicktimes, and its free :-)

hope this helps,

cheers

Dave

[videoblogging] FireAnt

2005-08-18 Thread BevSykes

Someone here recommended FireANT. I've
downloaded it...and I have a question. If you start listening to a
podcast, how do you STOP it? Even if I delete the file that I started
playing, it continues playing. There must be an easy answer to
this!
