Ask a 14 year old girl - they know better than anyone what appeals to them! Better yet, film one or more actually doing the project. Re: [videoblogging] AVI to.mov
depends on the type of AVI. I can usually play AVI with Quicktime on Mac. Depends on the codec... you might need to install DivX and/or Xvid as those are popular codecs used in AVI. [videoblogging] Screencast Question/Advice
Hello, I need some how-to advice and pointers to useful online information on how to do screencasts. I work mostly with small nonprofits. I recently got into vlogging using an inexpensive digital camera with video setting and MovieMaker on my PC. I used the freevlog tutorial and I'm up and running on doing posts shot with my camera and edited on MovieMaker. My next goal is to create vlogs of how-to information. I downloaded Camstudio and recorded the screen doing the how-to steps. My plan was to import the clip into MovieMaker and edit it - include clips shot with my camera, music, titles, etc. (Here's my first experiment which I turned into a comedy: http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/files/first-how-to-video.wmv) - but you can see what I describe below at the end of the film. The AVI clip I made with Camstudio plays back beautifully on mediaplayer and camstudio player, but when I import it into MovieMaker, it looks like crap. It looks like the screen display is off. I have no idea how to fix this -- is this a setting issue? Like do I need to use a different codec in the recording? Is there an import setting in MovieMaker that I need to adjust? Are screencast clips by Camstudio simply not compatible with MovieMaker Do I need to look for another (free) editing or screen capture program? If so, what do you recommend? In addition, any advice or suggestions would be most appreciated about how to design, create, and implement an effective screencast. Thanks! Beth Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- Get Bzzzy! Re: [videoblogging] Screencast Question/Advice
Hello Beth, My next goal is to create vlogs of how-to information. I downloadedCamstudio and recorded the screen doing the how-to steps. My plan was to import the clip into MovieMaker and edit it - include clips shot withmy camera, music, titles, etc. (Here's my first experiment which Iturned into a comedy: http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/files/first-how-to-video.wmv) - butyou can see what I describe below at the end of the film. One of my many projects is screenvlog.com which hopes to get together several screencasts about videoblogging tools and sites and how to do things. Unfortunately, those of us involved with it have been busy with other things for quite some time. However, we are still wanting to do something about it. There are a few screencasting forums out there that I know of - www.myscreencast.com is one of them. The AVI clip I made with Camstudio plays back beautifully on mediaplayer and camstudio player, but when I import it into MovieMaker, it lookslike crap. It looks like the screen display is off.I have no idea how to fix this-- is this a setting issue?Like do I need to use adifferent codec in the recording? Is there an import setting inMovieMaker that I need to adjust? Are screencast clips by Camstudiosimply not compatible with MovieMaker Do I need to look for another (free) editing or screen capture program? If so, what do you recommend? I cannot get Camstudio to work on my computer (XP PC) myself, and I don't know of any other free screencasting tool out there that works well. Others have had good results from Camstudio and are pleased with it (Hi Michael Sullivan :)), but .. your mileage may vary. I use Camtasia Studio myself, but it is everything but free. However, Camtasia Studio has a 30 day fully functional trial period and within those 30 days you could make quite a lot of screencasts. Camtasia Studio, however, is quite expensive ($299) so the best is of course that we find free solutions that work well. (Disclaimer: I am associated with TechSmith who makes Camtasia Studio and I get a free license) In addition, any advice or suggestions would be most appreciated abouthow to design, create, and implement an effective screencast. There are a few sites out there but I cannot remember them off the top of my head. Jon Udell has a few good guides and there are also others who have moved into this field. I have created a near-dead yahoogroups dedicated to screencasting: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/screencasting - you can join there if you want and we can discuss it there more specifically. I don't know of any mailing lists dedicated to screencasting that have more activity as of now, but they should come pretty soon. Sorry I cannot give you more advice right now, Best, Raymond M. I am 100% sure that someone always answers questions, be they how do I set up a feed to who do i embed video in my blog and keep theblah blahh This list may have a lot of talk that goes over people's heads but those people talking are the ones with the most knowledge that can easily dispense answers in one quick email. [videoblogging] Re: Come on over to newbie spot
I dont consider non-newbie talk to be merely experts entertaining themselves while waiting for questions from newcomers. Clearly the original intention of the list was to cover all-things videoblogging, for all levels. At various times various people have had reason to see merit in lists for a more specific topics, or to cater for certain types of users. There are clearly advantages and drawbacks between creating multiple groups. The usual hurdle is getting that many people to participate in new groups, but it can be achieved, I dont want to discourage you. Forums are my ideal. That way we can have subforums on all sorts of subjects and nobody need get overloaded or feel intimidated, or be afraid of posting too much. Bu some people want to use email, not have to browse to site, so it would need to be a system with good email support in order to suit all tastes. I can understand why all sorts of different people at different levels might find this list to be annoying and not maximising its potential, and the internets potential for information organisation etc. Although I probably am a newbie because Ive only done a few videoblogs, I obviously like to waffle about technical aspcts, and other aspects, and in terms of time Ive been here a while. Well this list doesnt work too well for me anymore either. Ive tired myself out, just hope I havent tired everyone else out at the same time. Most topics die out too quickly these days for my liking, I find it harder and harder to know when to speak and when to shutup, Ive probably got on peoples nerves, and not enough of my atttempts to help get responded to at all these days, so Im done. If you breath a collective sigh of relief then I dont blame you. I may re-emerge once I actually start videoblogging, I hope the community solves list-split dilemmas and in my dreams moves to a new system that encourages talk of all sorts, break down the invisible communication barriers that bind us. Re: [videoblogging] the gray area of copyright law
FWIW, I do agree with current copyright law, at least to the extent that if someone creates something they should own it and decide what is done with it. and in this discussion, i will take the side against present copyright law. it's like following the laws of the Old testament. they were written for a different time in human consciousness. brothers and sisters. I bring you the New testament. these are just laws. they can be rewritten as we change. (look at how we're having this conversation--we're changing) As for violations, they cannot sue every violator, which is why at some point they are going to have to start making examples of people like the RIAA has/is. They may not sue everyone, but who wants to be one of the ones sued? huh, weird way to go about it. so much fear. if im making personal media...why cant i use anything? Because someone spent blood, tears, and money to create it. If it belongs to them, why should you be alowed to take it without permission? because its part of the culture. TV/music/movies is all around us. its in our memory and in our language. I speak about the things i see and hear around the water cooler... how can you say i cannot use it in my voice which is also audio and video on a blog? Creative Commons is a licensing agreement determined by the creator not by the user. What you are describing seems to take control away from the person who invented/created something. youve misunderstood me. and the point is that creators(big and small) need to move from traditional, ineffective copyright law to a more flexible and sane system. as the creator, you can own the work...but you let people use it under certain conditions. for example, youll let me play with your work for fun...but if i want to make money...you get a piece of the action. why is this important? you ever try contacting a major media company to use a video/audio clip? its a no go. bascially any commercial content will always be off-limits to regular people. is this sane? like andrew said, dont drive 56 mph. Ah, but money is the driving force behind many creations. Not everyone creates to get more play. If someone quits their job and slaves for three months to write a great novel and then I come along and print the text out and give it to every person in the country is that fair? Hey, just because the author isn't making money and isn't on the bestseller list I am helping him out because now more people can read his book? That doesn't sound like a great deal to me. lets think this through. what i would most likely be playing with is pop-culture...becasue its part of our language. so its already popular and getting lots of money. Coke wants me to wear their t-shirts all the time...coke, never forget. if i play with a work of an obscure artist...then im giving him/her exposure. and by giving exposure...commercial attention will follow. Again, that isn't to say there aren't good examples, but those seem to be examples where the creator is fine with taking a certain loss by distributing content for free. I can't think of a good example where the creator was against unauthorized use and illegal distribution turned out good for him. the argument of pirate vs pay is essentially false. people pirate Brittany Spears. Brittany Spears still makes a pile of money. Traditional media believes that its all or nothing. so afraid to let go of their content and let it flow...and probably make more money. people pay for whats good...and they also try things out for free online. I pirate a copy of Final Cut Pro. but i consistently buy macs and all of its products. symbiotic relationship. Creativity is rewarded when the creator gets paid. In the example of the novelist -- what would the incentive be for quitting one's job and slaving for three months on a really great novel if there was no payoff other than the satisfaction of a job well done? That isn't going to pay the bills. So now our writer has positively contributed to the arts and society but winds up homeless because of it. youre telling me that if i write the bestest book in the world...that, except for current copyright law, everyone will steal it...and I wont make a dime? there's no other way? Creativity is helped when there is a return on investment. Also, if you can't steal other people's stuff you'll have to create your own -- which spurs creativity. I would suggest that reusing content chills creativity more. Mr Walt Disney made his empire on stolen content. Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Snow White, Pinnochio. its in our genes to reuse whats around us. so funny that Disney is the biggest defender of copyright law now. jay -- Adventures in Videoblogging URL: http://www.momentshowing.net http://feeds.feedburner.com/Momentshowing Yahoo! Would Fidel have a case? http://canf.org/es/chistes/FUNNY-AS-HELL-Strohs-NEED-SPEAKERS.mpeg A case of Strohs? :) That's pretty funny, I hadn't seen it before. Again, I am not a lawyer, but I would hazard a yes. I could not imagine dubbing over Brittney Spears' voice to have her unintentionally pitch a product. In fact, I believe lawsuits have been brought by the estates of dead actors whose computer generated images were used to pitch products. Perhaps this qualifies as satire, or maybe the creators benefitted from strained relations with Cuba. Or maybe this just came out when everyone was a bit less litigious. Laws do change, but copyright laws seem to be changing in favor of the copyright holders, due most likely to powerful media lobbies that are recognizing how technology is making pirating simple. Look at what's going on with DRM. There's a lot of money at stake. As for violations, they cannot sue every violator, which is why at some point they are going to have to start making examples of people like the RIAA has/is. They may not sue everyone, but who wants to be one of the ones sued? huh, weird way to go about it. so much fear. Not really, we can look at everything from traffic tickets to spankings to public executions to honor killings and many other horrible activities meant to serve as a deterrent to crime. Similar concept. Really, what other choice do they have to protect their rights? Because someone spent blood, tears, and money to create it. If it belongs to them, why should you be alowed to take it without permission? because its part of the culture. TV/music/movies is all around us. its in our memory and in our language. I speak about the things i see and hear around the water cooler... how can you say i cannot use it in my voice which is also audio and video on a blog? You can use your voice and image in a vlog because you have permission. It is like taking a camcorder into a movie theatre -- just because you see it doesn't mean you can record it and it certainly doesn't mean you can distribute it. But you are welcome to talk about it all you want. But just because something is in your memory doesn't mean you own it, you only own the memory of it. Should I be able to kick the people out of my childhood home? No, I think I understood you. You are talking about a requirement to allow people to use your creation against your will in a way which could impact your profits. I would suggest that the current system is sane to the copyright holder, but restrictive to the end user. I personally think the creator deserves more protection than the user. You mention using copyrighted material for fun, but giving a cut of profit if money is involved. If I stream a movie/show/song for free I make no profit, but the users don't have to go buy the material. So, even though I made no money the copyright holder lost money. That's the beauty of the Creative Commons license, if someone wants to give away more rights they can, if they don't they don't have to. Coke want you to wear their shirts, but they -- like most companies -- are very protective of their brand and may not appreciate the t-shirt you make. Maybe the font is off or the color isn't right or the context isn't how they would present their image. Also the t-shirt maker would lose a lot of business if everyone could make their own shirts -- shirts he paid Coca-Cola for the exclusive rights to make. So now, because we've loosened rights: coke loses money they could have made selling rights to print
