[videoblogging] Re: christmas dvd - iDVD questions
Hi Richard-- Something else... When I create a project for a DVD, I save it to an .iso file on my hard drive. That initial rendering takes the hour or more that you're talking about... but once you have an .iso image for a DVD, you can then just copy that image to the DVD itself without having to render each time... I'm sure Mac must have an option like this too... Susan http://vlog.kitykity.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Richard Show [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Bill, I think I figured out the answer to my question. Use current settings ... Richard On 12/23/05, Richard Show [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks Bill! One simple question ... when you say you do the export quicktime do you leave it at default settings? On 12/23/05, Bill Streeter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Here is what I do to make a DVD with iDVD. I save an uncompressed quicktime file from FCP (file/export/quicktime). This is very quick because the file is just transcoded into a QT wrapper. The files are large but not to worry ... I'll explain in a minute. I then create my iDVD project which you obviously know how to do. When you get your project together and hit the burn button iDVD creates your menus and then encodes your files into MPEG2 format that is significantly smaller than your uncompressed quicktime source files but DVD quality. So if you have say 10 1 gig clips that total 60 minutes in playing time, they won't be that big by the time iDVD is done with them and burned them onto a DVD. Also iDVD takes a long time to process this stuff so just be patient and let it go overnight or something. One more thing Richard, if you don't have a large external firewire drive you might want to consider getting one. It's almost essential for working with FCP. You can set it to be your scratch disk when you edit and you should get a little better performance from your machine. Also it saves your system disk from a lot of wear and tear. And it's really handy for backing up things and doing little projects like this where you're going to be creating a lot of large files. Bill Streeter LO-FI SAINT LOUIS www.lofistl.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Richard Show [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I know this is a video blog list, but, beings that I've never been particularly on topic, and beings that some of you may want to do this same thing with your vlogs, I have some iDVD questions. I had this really great idea, which is that I would make a Christmas DVD for friends and family members gifts. (Mainly since I can't get them to watch my videos on the web :). It just so happens that I have about 1 3/4 hours of video total that I have made since the richard show started, and the iDVD 5 has this option for highest quality and 120 minutes, so I'm thinking I can fit everything on there. First of all, I figured I should start with something better than my freevlog compressed .mov files for the web, which would be a hassle, since I used 4 different editing programs (premier elements, premier, iMovie, and FCP), and what I saved is generally a project file to compress from. So I started in final cut pro and tried exporting uncompressed 10 bit NTSC 48 kHz. This took a long time and would create multiple gigabyte files for each of my 21 videos, and with iDVD all these files have to be on one drive. Then I tried the default quicktime for downloading to LAN, and this took an even longer time, but created much smaller files. (I did this with a couple of movies as an experiment.) So I pretty much gave up on that for now, and got into iDVD and made a simple 2-level menu and added all the movies (in their quicktime free vlog compression setting format) and clicked burn and based on the progress right now, it looks like the first DVD may be done about January 1. (OK, I'm exagerating, but it looks like it may be, like, at least an hour, or more, for one DVD to burn.) (Oh yeah, I have a 1.67 GHz power book Gr with 1 GB SDRAM) My questions: 1) Should I go to the trouble to recompress or export in better format? (If so, what format/settings?) 2) If I do recompress/export and make bigger files is that going to make the iDVD burning process even slower? 2) Is there a way to make it faster? 3) Feel free to answer any other questions I should have asked :) ... Re: [videoblogging] Re: Google Video Revisited
I used to work with the company behind what was then called Throttlebox, a media wrapper technology for the Entertainment Industry. Here is a page with info that is amazingly still up: http://www.creativenewmedia.com/Services/throttlebox.htmAt one point, they had contracts with several labels and put out these 'box' files for Madonna, Bowie, U2, Jim Morrison etc... The company went down during the early DRM Daze and also shows how difficult it is to build a sustainable business around a desktop application. In a sense, it was a head of it's time But not you can do all this with Flash and Quicktime is still a viable framework too.I know another company, Clearsand, that puts out something called MediaForge which is also a media wrapper.. ( It used to be more like Macromedia Director and I owned it back in 1997, but they adapted to changing times). The current incarnation of their technology/community can be seen at: http://www.mediaforge.com/For a time, i started development on a cross-platform media wrapper using the IDE called Revolution Runtime (http://runrev.com/ ). But my interests shifted to Open Media and not Closed DRMesque wrappers... But wrappers can be used intuitively for Open Media too... I just dont see it worth my time when the same is achievable in with web 2.0 technology. anyway, back to work.sullOn 12/28/05, LeanBackVids.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com , Deirdre Straughan[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Geez, I leave you guys alone for a couple of days and you're STILLwallowing in definitions. So... can we make the not-quite-videobloggers feel welcome?I'll admit the definitions can get a little annoying to read, but I have found myself justifying the difference between many vlog-relatedwords lately. However, this discussion took a theoretical and technical turn, whichI often enjoy.Verdi mentioned the idea of using video as the primary delivery method. The other content, such as that found on a blog, would be hosted inside the video. Some people mentioned how this could be achieved using Quicktime, butFlash 8 may be a much easier development platform.Yes it will take a financial investment and time to learn, but it can be fairly simple. For example, build a Flash shell that took two variables - the videofile path and a text file path, which will dictate what is visible to the user at any given time.Using the new alpha channels in videoallows for button links on a layer above your video, and the linkscould change points of time in the video or the text content file.Making that text file a dynamic php file (or AJAX) opens up for even more interactivity.Once built, the only development needed would beto make new videos and associated text.I got discouraged by the quality of Flash video and I quit pursuingthe development of this shell.Anybody have something similar? -Matt---http://vlogmap.orghttp://leanbackvids.comhttp://ridertech.com Yahoo! Re: [videoblogging] Google Video Revisited
I can't remember what I told you last time we talked about this, so I'll make up some new stuff. :o) Point #1: The important thing is people are putting new creations out there. Period. Point #2: Most people have a brain and realise that conversations about definitions don't invalidate the value of their work no matter if they feel they're included or not. If they think they absolutely *need* to be included in some definition or their world will collapse, that's not really something I can care about. They should reread Point #1 until they get it. Point #3: Video online is being used in different ways, that's a fact. Distinguishing between them raises the level of understanding. I've chosen not to use videoblogging as an umbrella for video online and instead use it as video and blog mixed because that seems logical. It is also how most people understand videoblog. If you are not mixing video and blog and as a consequence feel left out of the Yahoo Group then stop and see Point #1. - Andreas On Wed, 28 Dec 2005 18:08:43 +0100, Deirdre Straughan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Geez, I leave you guys alone for a couple of days and you're STILL wallowing in definitions. Ah! I was just going to post this too! Well, talking heads ARE kinda boring, actually, especially when the video itself is too long. I mean, if you're a fast reader, you know that the whole thing would've been so much easier if it was written instead of being a video which you have to sit through for ages. Hence why I'd rather slap together home videos/real-life videos I have shot and edited and post it on my blog, along with short text commentary, instead of having videos of me speaking directly to the camera. But then, it had more to do with the fact that I, ah, seriously don't like my recorded voice, it just sounds too much different compared to my usual sultry and silky and also very melodious voice. I'm glad you're having fun with it, but would be comforted by a few clear statements Since this is a developing, changing area with some things that Andreas, Adrian Miles and others are doing have not yet been easily implemented for general usage. And new devices, standards will probably develop a year from that don't exist now. A definitive statement is probably not possible yet. that even though this group is called videoblogging, people who are doing things with video online that don't quite fit your definition (when and if you ever agree on one) are nonetheless welcome here. Entertaining though it is, I fear that all the nitpicking may drive away some people. Some of this is not nitpicking. There is conceptualy exploration on the workings and possiblities of a developing media form, videoblogging. Personally I think this is a good location for such discussion. I see locations like http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vlogtheory as usefull when a workable, clear theory comes about. There the theory can be codified, expanded and such. But for a variety of clear, intelligent, cogent views to hash and compete things out, an open, unrestricted discussion is better. A place like this where there are many competing signals and some noise that brings in new views. I don't think people who are not interested in such discussions should be intimidated. I don't talk theory to look down on people, but because I think it's useful. And if someone doesn't like the conversation, they can avoid the thread. But I don't think people should be limited in their range of discussion based on someone else possibly being offended. On noise and alternate views, I disagree with completing dismissing competing proposals such as Will's assertion on the supremacy of content to media. There is a DNA of content that often persists across different media. The syntax of film (cutting, lighting, etc.) is recognizable even when it's been transformed in the media of television. -- Enric So... can we make the not-quite-videobloggers feel welcome? -- best regards, Deirdré Straughan www.beginningwithi.com (personal) www.tvblob.com (work) Yahoo! Not really. FCP is a software easy to work. For friendship in vlogging there is no software and no tutorials. Oh, and they also show previews of videos from the search results pages... I guess that counts as a modification. Re: [videoblogging] Google Video Revisited
That's true. Maybe one day it it'll be as easy and cheap to do a video in a blog. While I'm throwing things out here... What if you did TV show as a videoblog? I'm not talking about taking a TV show and distributing it on the web or via iTunes. I mean, what if you designed a TV like show as a videoblog - written in small chunks, with a blog post, permalinks, comments, etc. Maybe it's even interactive like some of the things Andreas and Adrian Miles talk about. But what if was a business - with sponsors and a staff. Designed to make money. I'd still call that a videoblog. Would you? This is Rocketboom.. and yes, its a videoblog. Yahoo! Re: [videoblogging] Re: christmas dvd - iDVD questions
Susan,You're exactly right. With iDVD, you export as a disc image RichardOn 12/28/05, Susan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Hi Richard--Something else... On 12/23/05, Bill Streeter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Here is what I do to make a DVD with iDVD. I save an uncompressed quicktime file from FCP (file/export/quicktime). This is very quick because the file isjust transcoded into a QT wrapper. The files are large but not to worry ... I'll explain in a minute. I then create my iDVD project which you obviously know how todo. When you get your project together and hit the burn button iDVD creates your menus and then encodes your files into MPEG2 format that is significantly smaller than your uncompressed quicktime source files but DVD quality. So if you have say 10 1 gig clips that total 60 minutes in playing time, they won't be that big by thetime iDVD is done with them and burned them onto a DVD. Also iDVD takes a long time to process this stuff so just be patient and let it go overnight or something. One more thing Richard, if you don't have a large externalfirewire drive you might want to consider getting one. It's almost essential for working with FCP. You can set it to be your scratch diskwhen you edit and you should get a little better performance fromyour machine. Also it saves your system disk from a lot of wear and tear. And it's really handy for backing up things and doing little projects like this where you're going to be creating a lot oflarge files. Bill Streeter LO-FI SAINT LOUIS www.lofistl.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Richard Show[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I know this is a video blog list, but, beings that I've neverbeenparticularly on topic, and beings that some of you may want to do this samething with your vlogs, I have some iDVD questions. I had this really great idea, which is that I would make a Christmas DVD for friends and family members gifts. (Mainly since I can't getthem to watch myvideos on the web :). It just so happens that I have about 1 3/4 hours of video total that I havemade since the richard show started, and the iDVD 5 has this option forhighest quality and 120 minutes, so I'm thinking I can fit everything onthere. First of all, I figured I should start with something betterthan myfreevlog compressed .mov files for the web, which would be a hassle, since Iused 4 different editing programs (premier elements, premier, iMovie, andFCP), and what I saved is generally a project file to compress from. So Istarted in final cut pro and tried exporting uncompressed 10bit NTSC 48kHz. This took a long time and would create multiple gigabyte files for eachof my 21 videos, and with iDVD all these files have to be onone drive. ThenI tried the default quicktime for downloading to LAN, and this took an evenlonger time, but created much smaller files. (I did this witha couple ofmovies as an experiment.) So I pretty much gave up on that for now, and got into iDVDand made asimple 2-level menu and added all the movies (in theirquicktime free vlog compression setting format) and clicked burn and based on the progress rightnow, it looks like the first DVD may be done about January 1.(OK, I'm exagerating, but it looks like it may be, like, at least anhour, or more, for one DVD to burn.) (Oh yeah, I have a 1.67 GHz power book Gr with 1 GBSDRAM) My questions: 1) Should I go to the trouble to recompress or export inbetter format? (If so, what format/settings?)2) If I do recompress/export and make bigger files is thatgoing to make theiDVD burning process even slower? 2) Is there a way to make it faster?3) Feel free to answer any other questions I should haveasked :) ...
