[videoblogging] What a Belarusian vlog looks like

2007-01-22 Thread sean_m_garrett
http://www.sa-si.tv/

No idea what they are saying, but the quality is as good as most any
Western vlog -- and most likely Minsk TV.

From e-belarus.org

On December 25, 2006, Belarusian popular comic actors Sasha and
Sirozha launched their daily vlog Sa-Si.TV.

Sa-Si.TV is an independent satirical anti-TV project. More than
1 individuals have visited the vlog since it started to function.
According to Sa-Si.TV coordinator Alexander Zaru, more than 500 of
them have subscribed for additional vlog's features which will be
available for registered visitors.

The SaSi. TV audience in Belarus is limited by the modest number of
people having broadband internet access and by high prices for such
access.

[videoblogging] New weekly comedy show: Good Commitment

2007-01-22 Thread Kary Rogers
Hey y'all,

I've been following this space for the last six months and I'm
excited about what's going on. It prompted me make a few videos for
my personal website and I had (and am having) a lot of fun doing it.

Also, I've been inspired by what I've seen out of you guys. So I'd
like to announce a new show that myself and another person, James
Comans, are producing: Good Commitment.

We're aiming for a new episode every Monday and our hope is that
it'll entertain you. What we lack for in production value we hope to
make up for by making you laugh. Hopefully we'll only improve every
aspect from here on out.

Our first two offerings are a rap video about the TV show LOST's
hiatus and a little story about two Mississippians that discover the
Internet.

Go ahead and subscribe with one of the links in the sidebar if you
like what you see.

Thanks to Rudy (Galacticast) and Michael (freevlog) for the Wordpress
theme work.

[videoblogging] Re:FinalCutPro Settings?

2007-01-22 Thread Rupert
Hi Caleb,

For what it's worth, I have been importing Canon 640x 480 AVIs into
iMovie very quickly, with almost no loss of quality. You have to use
the iSight Project setting, though, not the MPEG4.

I hear that there's a secret option in the latest version of FCP to
sample a clip's exact settings and create a sequence preset, but
since I haven't tried it, I can't tell whether it'll do 15fps.
Probably not. And as said before, it's also a problem that they're
AVIs. For what it's worth, though, the sequence settings sampling
thing is only available by ctrl+clicking a clip to get its contextual
menu, and I can't remember what the exact title of the menu item is.
And if you have the previous version of FCP like I do, it's no good.
But it might help somebody - it's a useful feature.

Actually, they may have even compressed it MORE to aid the punchline.

It's dumb because the original footage didn't come from some

[videoblogging] Re: Editing Software Recommendations?

2007-01-22 Thread Gena
Since you are using Ulead Media Studio Pro that tells me that you are
on the Windows Operating System.

The following is based on my experience and opinion. One size does not
fit all. The following is a rough outline of some of the software
based on ease of use. Each product has positives and negatives.

If you are just starting out and have no prior experience in video
editing then you might want to use Windows Movie Maker2 or XP or the
version that comes with Vista.

It is drag and drop editing. It can do a rough edit for you. Easy to
add titles and will output to the .wmn and .avi formats. It is free.
For very simple editing it is fine. I stress very simple editing.

I know this program. It will lull you into a false sense of security.
Beware. There will come a time when you want to do something more
adventurous. You'll add one cut or fade too many and that SOB will
crash and take your hard work with you. I speak from earned hostility.

Next on the terrain you might want to take a look at Adobe Premier
Elements, Ulead Video Studio, Magix Movie Edit Pro or Serif Movie Plus 5.

I like and recommend Ulead Video Studio. I still use it from time to
time but I like Serif Movie Plus 5 even better. It allows me to make
L cuts and it is much easier to separate audio from video if I need to.

This software is for novice to intermediate users. Each one of these
products has an guide mode that helps the new user get up to speed
quickly and make a video. But for those that have more experience
there are tools to help you extended your reach, without crashing.

Most of the above software is around $70-100 but they have the
advantage of exporting to multiple formats, some toss in a boatload of
features.

On the upper plane of editing we move into the software versions of
traditional video/movie editing concepts. AVID Free, Adobe Premier
and your product Ulead Media Studio Pro. Features galore but it helps
if you've had prior experience with some of the concepts of tradition
editing.

A novice can learn to use these programs but it is a learning curve.
I hope this helps,

I'm not sure where you are in the process so this is just general

After you've recorded or editing you are ready to upload your videos.
For that you need a video web host like Blip.tv, YouTube, Veoh or
other web host.

Most sites ask you to become a member. This will allow them to
allocate a place for you on the web hosting site. Read the Term of
Service before you upload videos!

Some of the sites state that once you upload a video to the site you
give some or all of your rights to the web host. Others have a limited
time of ownership or if your video goes popular you may or may not see
a dime of compensation. Other free web hosts have no conditions at all.

Each service is a little different so I'll talk about Blip.tv When
you are ready there is a button called Upload on the menu bar. Click
it and it will take you to the uploading section. This is where you
click a button to select your video from your computer hard drive and
then the image that will represent it.

You select the licensing options that you want, any other choices you
want to make and then hit the upload button.

You video is uploaded to the site. From there you can get the code
that you will use to paste in your blog or website.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Editing Software Recommendations?

2007-01-22 Thread CarLBanks
Ok, on Windows I recommend Pinnacle Studio Plus 10 ($100) or if your
adventerous Avid Liquid ($300 last I checked).

Pinnacle can: chromakey a blue/green screen, use two video layers and
two audio layers, add really good titles, make a DVD, and a ton of
other stuff. I used Pinnacle back when I was in the Windows operating
system and one of our editors uses Pinnacle.

On the Mac side you pretty much have iMovie (free with new macs or in
iLife), Final Cut Express HD ($300), and Final Cut Studio. Now Adobe
is bringing Premiere Pro back to the Mac in 2007.

From what I see you can't go wrong with the editor you choose. Each
editor does stuff differently, but they are about the same in the end.

I just played your December 17th video and it ran fine.

15fps
~ 500 kbps data rate
Sorenson Video
320x240

I don't know what you mean by slow download time, but the only thing
you can do about that is A) change the length of the video or B) lower
the data rate so there's less information for the video to download to
the viewer's computer.

I don't know why you're using Sorenson. You might be better off with
H264 compression, in which case, you'd be able to lower the data rate
and keep your video quality.

2007-01-22 Thread damiensomerset
Rupert,

I'd really like to know this FCP trick if anybody knows how to do it.
I can't seem to figure it out. (G5 FCP 5.1)

 Hi Dina,

My 2 cents is to think about sound quality as not that many cameras
have a mic input. If you are wanting to use an external mic this could
be a determining factor. For shooting outdoors or in noisy places, an
external mic makes a huge difference IMO. And mic input is not to be
confused with an active shoe or hot shoe on the top of the camera.
It does accept a mic but still only one mounted on the camera itself,
which is much less flexible and still poorer quality than having a
 wireless or lavalier mic.

We have an older Sony HDR-HC1 which is now sold in a newer version
as the HC3.
HC1 does the job well though we have had to get it repaired 2x in less
than 1 year as the touch screen keeps malfunctioning. We do use it
every day though; no rest for this camera. The price does keep going
 down on these.

 Coming in mid-Feb there is:
 - HC5 (no mic input) $1099 list price http://snipurl.com/1806s
 - HC7 (yes mic input) $1399 list pricehttp://snipurl.com/18089

JVC Everio G Series GZ-MG505U also had a very good score on the audio
and has an external mic port. The advantage is that it is a hard
drive camcorder so you could record as long as the battery holds up.
My concern would be how easy would it be for you to convert the file
format for editing. I think the Rey Brothers have a HD-version and
 they speak well of it.

I'll keep my eyes open. There was one site that had current camcorder
reviews. I went to camcorderinfo.com but parts of it haven't been
update for a while. There is one more site/blog that had the straight
skivvy on consumer and prosumer camcorders. I need to dig it out of my

Oh, I just got the Sanyo Xacti C-40 for my day to day camcorder. I
love the little sucker. $200 at Radio Shack. (I know, it doesn't make

My only problem was that my main editing program, Serif Movie Plus 5,

 definitely digging it.

Currently I am trying to understand if it is possible
to go inside the programming of a DVD to edit the
film. Is that possible?

Next what I would like to do is find the program which
tells the DVD which subtitles to play. I want to be
able to then edit the film segments I want and index
these segments via the subtitles. Is that possible?

The aim is to take the legal portion of a film (10% or
less - I imagine) for educational language learning
purposes. I would like to put the subtitles index on a
website (private - not public) so that students can
click on a subtitle and see the film segment and view
the context and content of the said subtitle.

Any suggestions or advice are welcome.

Not speaking to the copyright issues, only the technical ones, my
understanding is that a DVD is a finished file, and is certainly uneditable
on the disc. Many have software that prevents easy burning as well.

You can play it on your machine and capture the video in real time in a
program like camtasia studio. As to reading the subtitles and indexing the
clips in that way, I can't imagine that it's possible.
