[videoblogging] anyone know how to capture a video conference call from computer to computer
Hello, First of all I want introduce myself. My name is Betsy and I recently launched www.StartupStudio.com, a pod/videocast that interviews entrepreneurs with the mission of inspiring others to follow their dreams. Examples of interviewees include George Foreman and the founders of Southwest Airlines, Coinstar, Tazo Tea, Meebo, blip.tv, FeedBurner, Esprit, Grouper/Spinner Networks, Grammar Girl, ZipRealty, Kong, WordPress, Ravenswood Winery, etc. Most of the interviews have just been audio, I'm just now moving to video. Here is my question. Let's say I want to interview someone who is out of state and I want to record a video conference call from my computer to the interviewees computer. Can someone tell me if there is an easy solution to do this and record it? I am not that technical and I may be interviewing people who are completely unsophisticated with regard to technology. So the simplier the better. And I don't currently have a web camera so I know I'd need to get one of those. Anyone have any recommendations? Thank you very much for your help. Re: [videoblogging] anyone know how to capture a video conference call from computer to computer
First thing is to determine whether your interview subject has a web cam. Then, what video communications software they have. Two options seem to work best: iChat (mac) and Skype (both mac pc). Yahoo messenger has video conference capabilities too. Basically, whatever video conference software your subject has, you should have as well, and be prepared to record from that. Else, convince your subject to download and familiarize themselves with a new program. For iChat, I use ecamm's Conference Recorder. This is without doubt the easiest I've found. Trouble is, not everybody owns a mac. http://www.ecamm.com/mac/conferencerecorder/ For Skype, I use iShowU (mac - thanks Verdi), which is a screen capture program and may be used with any video-capable chat application. I've only used it for an interview once, and still troubleshoot audio recording in it. http://www.shinywhitebox.com/home/home.html Best of luck! Re: [videoblogging] Denver Now Discussing Free Speech Public Safety Issues For DNC
Hi everyone: On 6/11/07, Markus Sandy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Jun 11, 2007, at 6:39 PM, Patrick Cook wrote: When I say anarchist groups, I mean groups who openly admit they have NO INTENTION WHATEVER of complying with the law while they conduct their event) and give them as much bad publicity as possible. Hi Pat, Well you certainly popped up with an interesting topic :) I see a few issues here: 1) public safety issues can result in new laws aimed at specific groups (e.g., bike laws in NYC) Sometimes these laws are introduced without due process and are just used to arrest people and then drop charges long after the event (and after a long hassle, confiscation of property and possibly legal costs). True BUT if groups and people who are hell bent on breaking the law were to STAY AWAY, they wouldn't BE in a position to be arrested in the first place, no? 2) this approach seems a bit like convicting people before they commit a crime. Stating that one does not intend to comply with the law is not the same as saying you are going to break it and that's not the same as actually breaking it. Not if they have a website or plans already outlined elsewhere in advance. I do believe it's called PLOTTING the crime. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that. 3) labeling this specific set of people as anarchists sounds a bit like stereotyping. I know a lot of folks who think of themselves as anarchists but may not agree with the statements of actions of the groups that concern you. I think we need to be careful about labels. True BUT do you think the groups whose sole purpose is to come here to Denver and break the law (As they call it protesting mind you) are gonna care? Of course not. Look at Seattle during WTO '99. There were protesters crying out that free speech CAN be expressed WITHOUT destroying someone else's property, livelihood or business (Something that NO ONE has the right to do), WHICH IS TRUE. Not even you can deny that. how do we deal with these and other aspects about bad publicity? It's not about bad publicity. It's USING bad publicity to expose the rogue groups whose sole goal is to come to Denver during the DNC and give the rest of us PEACEFUL political activists (And ultimately the city) a black eye in the eyes of the mainstream world. That's the mission. Hi everyone: On 6/11/07, Steve Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Im sure many people consider that violence is in itself the strongest form of bad publicity. Yes and we need to turn the tables back onto them. In other words, expose their violent ways and plans so they can be dealt with by proper authorities BEFORE they strike next year. There are those who genuinely believe in a cause but resort to actions that hamper the cause. And there are those who are just plain STUPID enough to not see any other way which DOES NOT hamper the cause. There is also the concept of the Agent Provocateurs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agent_provocateur The state, as the only entity which has 'the legitimate right to commit violence', finds it rather easy to deal with opponents who resort to violence, it makes it so easy to crush and discredit the opponents. Unfortunately it is this viewpoint which the mainstream public sees since it's been proven time and time again to the mainstream public that activists, no matter how well-intended they are, simply CANNOT be a sustained self-policing community. (Note when I say they, I refer to the mainstream public's view of us political activists) This image has to be changed. I dunno how. But we've got to start somewhere. And if it means using the power of the Internet and our blogs/videoblogs/podcasts, then I say SO BE IT. We've got to DO SOMETHING peoples. And the DNC next year right here in Denver is a good time to prove that political activism CAN be achieved WITHOUT seeing the city get turned upside down and inside out on national, if not international, television. We can't really do anything about suicide bombers and other terrorists wanting to cause harm, but we can take care of our own so the police can concern themselves with the suicide bombers and other terrorists WITHOUT having to worry about what we'll do too. Hi everyone: On 6/11/07, Gena [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The right to freedom of speech is non-negotiable. It can't be withheld due to the potential threat of violence. Ohh?? So does that mean that people shouldn't be allowed to commute to and from work and home in Downtown Denver because the place where the convention will be housed is ALSO in Downtown Denver (Along with the many free speech areas)? One of the local city council members took the approach that one's right to commute to and from work and home is non-negotiable too. It may not be in the Constitution or any other legal document, but people shouldn't be FORCED TO TEMPORARILY RELOCATE or take time off from work just so a bunch of people can excercise their right to free speech while a bunch of other people turn the city upside down and inside out on national, if not international, television. And you know something? He's got a valid point. People SHOULD NOT have to temporarily relocate or take time off from work just so a bunch of people can excercise their right to free speech while a bunch of other people turn the city upside down and inside out on national, if not international, television. It's just not right. How would YOU like it if you had to put your life on hold because of this? You probably wouldn't like it too well, would you? There's got to be a common ground. It's there alright. It's just a process of finding it. I have and continue to have serious disagreements with the policies of the current administration. To some in this country that in and of itself is act of treason. I'm not an anarchist. I would not and will not condone any acts of destruction of personal or private property. Hey, I'm with you 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000% (If not more). :) By the criteria you present my presence at the convention would be disallowed. I cannot be an agent to assist in political profiling of citizens based on group affiliation. If you have no intention of breaking the law, why would you fear being, as you put it, disallowed? I appreciate the problems Denver will have concerning public safety. It will not be easy to balance the rights of citizens with the multiplicity of people who want to do harm, both foreign and domestic. I am only speaking for myself here. I don't believe using a blog/vlog to prevent another person's from expressing their political freedom of speech or to address concerns to their government is appropriate. Okay. What do you think IS an appropriate medium or method to accomplish this? Challenge, yes. Dispute? You Betcha. Profile and prevent other expression based on political affiliation? No. Well then, consider it a challenge. A challenge for the groups to explain their intentions in case they've somehow been misinterpreted. If the groups can't explain themselves, then I guess the original interpretation will just have to stand on their own merits (Whatever they're worth), now will they? You've started something great. The films were amazing on the big screen. Without distraction, with total immersive focus, they were fantastic to sit and watch. And contrary to what I'd expected, I didn't see a single film that suffered from transfer to the big screen. Quite the opposite, in fact. Curated screenings really worked: Intelligent and eclectic selection according to a curator's chosen theme - not just 'best of' or 'most popular' highlights from a single genre or subgenre. I'd like to see more of this online. A curator could choose a theme and then revlog an eclectic selection of great videos connected to that theme. The 'gallery' could even be structured like a blog - that way you'd be able to guide the viewer down the page to watch each film in turn, easily and sequentially - but it doesn't have to update. It could be like a permanent virtual gallery space showing just these videos. Thank you for having me. I had an AMAZING time. [videoblogging] Re: Apple announcements: 3rd party iphone apps safari for windows!
People are going to be very disappointed if they think the iphone will do a fraction of what a mac with os x can do. On one level, and architectural level, its true that its os x and the safari browser. But this doesnt mean what it sounds like it means. The most dramatic example of this is the no 3rd party apps stuff. Ive checked more details and Apple have actually not changed their position on 3rd party stuff at all, they've just spun things to try to placate developers. In an age where there are browser based apps, they are saying 'see, this is how you do apps for the iphone, by writing them as you would any other safari-compatible webpage app'. Well even with flash there a lot that desktop apps can do that browser ones cant, and theres no evidence that they are including flash with the iphone. iphoney on many levels, unfortunately. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Denver Now Discussing Free Speech Public Safety Issues For DNC
While the intent to try to control or prevent those who would be violent may be laudable and I understand your desire to police from within (something most other groups like doctors and lawyers find impossible to do), I think the actual attempts will be fraught with trouble. We cannot control other people. We can influence them. It creates a sticky wicket for the peace-able among us. And so I would encourage you to get your message out there as loud as possible and attract as many people to your point of view as possible, and be able to perhaps demonstrate by the numbers, that the majority of new media or the voters or the videobloggers are committed to nonviolence or whatever. (Are we? I don't know actually.) Any time any of us attempt to speak for or restrain the acts of others without their express buy on, then we are simply doing the same things we reject when others attempt to do that to us. It's one of those one way streets that makes sense when you go down it forward, but really doesn't makes sense when you turn around and look at it from the other direction. You meanwhile have a passion and a vehicle and go to town with it and see what happens! Aloha, Rox On 6/12/07, Patrick Cook [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi everyone: On 6/11/07, Gena [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The right to freedom of speech is non-negotiable.
