[videoblogging] Re: Wall Street Journal: Videoblogging
I always appreciate hearing Jan's voice of sanity. I'm the laughing woman, who would be laughing more had anything of substance I told the reporter showed up in the piece. Don't get me wrong -- any publicity is good publicity. The traffic spike has been just enough to tick off my host and mess with my head. For 15 seconds, I was almost famous! A good half hour talking to the reporter about participatory media and how vlogging is changing the business landscape results in the routine "look at this new thing called vlogging" story. How foolish of me to think the WSJ would actually put a business spin on the topic. I was idealistic enough to think that the story might prompt companies to seek out vloggers to advise them on how to leverage this new medium for bottom-line value such as creating relationships with customers, and demonstrating their products. I realize that it may be all her editor wanted/would accept. Fingers crossed that at some point, when there's a dearth of real stories, she'll revisit that material with a deeper view. The early days of evolution and revolution are going to be filled with the churn that's been mentioned. It's a good thing that some of you get ticked enough to say "what about me?". That way we'll all get represented somehow. I was only in that story because of a kind mention by someone else. The story needed an opening act, and they chose a clown. Not necessarily bad, that's my mission after all, but don't take it as a rejection of the serious vlogging many of you do. I am continually in awe of the talent, insight, skill, and vision of my fellow vloggers. I'd be more active in this group if not for the overwhelming pressure of my current (paid!) work. I'm keeping an eye on y'all though! Vlog on, people. I love ya! Laugh every day. Laugh for no reason. Laugh your stress away. --Beth - - Beth Agnew, Professor of Mirth laughpractice.blogspot.com http://tinyurl.com/83u5u YAHOO! GROUPS LINKS Visit your group "videoblogging" on the web. [videoblogging] Video Blogging in WSJ
I was interviewed today about video blogging by a reporter from the Wall Street Journal. The story should run as early as Friday she said. I wasn't able to glean the focus of the article from our conversation. We were all over the map talking about why one vlogs and how to do it. I think it's safe to say that some very interesting characters in the financial world will now start taking notice of vlogging. Brace yourselves. --Beth -- Beth Agnew, Professor of Mirth laughpractice.blogspot.com http://tinyurl.com/83u5u Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- AIDS in India: A lurking bomb. Re: [videoblogging] Dont Record Music in the Background
Now this is just completely stupid. It's one thing to deliberately use a song as part of your video, you chose it, you knew what you were doing. But when some tune happens to show up in your video, that's fair use, and they do not in any way deserve compensation for it. Don't people have common sense any more? Thanks, Andrew, for drawing our attention to this. This is why the record companies and the music industry has such a bad reputation. They're idiots. I recently tried to license a particular song, going through all the right channels, to use in a presentation I was giving. They made the process so difficult that I decided not to use the piece, EVER. andrew michael baron wrote: Excellent article in NYTimes about legal suits for filming theenvironment around you: http://tinyurl.com/89of6 ... Probably just a glimpse of what we'll see as video becomes as common as snapping a pic with your cell phone. The Rodney King incident was well before its time. Re: [videoblogging] Re: books + theory reading
I think you're fully allowed to express your opinon, Chris. Continual "look at me, look at me" vlogging can get tiresome -- gosh, I should know about that!! -- and I think many of us agree with you on that. Alternative points of view may note that a video diary is nothing more than a paper diary updated to use newer technology. There will always be personal expressions in these media. Some of them are outstanding; some of them are a crushing bore. The good ones will rise to the top of the heap, as did Samuel Pepys and Anne Frank. The ones that have no celebrity may still be valued; my granny wrote some weird stuff for her day, what a hoot! I kinda like the folks on this list who say "Hey, do something significant with your video!" and "Think about what you're doing, and why!". Re: [videoblogging] Getting Camp Casey to load.
Another easy way is to hit reply, and then in the message composition window, plave your cursor after the blue underlined "camp" and hit delete. This will bring the casey512k.mov part up to where it is supposed to be so you can select the entire line and paste into a browser. Then don't send the reply. :-) Any long link like these that are likely to be wrapped to the next line by mail clients can be converted to manageable length at http://www.tinyurl.com or http://www.snipurl.com. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Politics calling??
There's hotspots everywhere, with the potential to provide a Pulitzer for the person who captures the story as we have never seen it before. I remember getting an e-mail from a friend in Moscow in 1991 during the attempted coup. His on-the-spot observations were chilling, and transmitted immediately to his network of contacts. The blogs from Iraq, both from residents and from soldiers, have given us unmediated (by MSM anyway) comment on what people are observing and feeling there. In a flurry of downloads when I was first using FireANT, there was a clip from a protest in NY showing mounted police pushing people back. I expect we'll see some video from Gaza within the next few days as that situation unfolds. There are the big stories that will be told, but more compelling are the stories from the local vloggers who will grab whatever device they have, be it video phone or camcorder, and archive what is going on in front of them. I don't mind gushing like Juan to say that this medium is awesomely powerful and it's exciting to be on the front lines. The Camp Casey story is important inherently, but also important because videography makes it so. How long before the mainstream media realize they need a network of vloggers just as they mpw need a network of stringers to report stories for them? And pay for it. -- Beth Agnew, Professor of Mirth laughpractice.blogspot.com http://tinyurl.com/83u5u YAHOO! GROUPS LINKS Visit your group "videoblogging" on the web. Re: [videoblogging] Questions Regarding Sponsorships, Underwriting, Ads, and Rates, etc.
I think it's fair to an extent to turn up the heat a little on people's ideas and put their feet to the fire about what it is they are really doing. If they are passionate about their ideas, that heat is not going to deter them. Our devil's advocates shoot flames at these ideas to see how fast they'll incinerate. That's valuable for the idea creator because if the idea or the plan is solid, a little singeing is not going to hurt it. It will, I hope, burn away the dross so that the true gold of the idea is revealed. If criticism inspires someone to change their plan for the better, or make the idea more flame-proof, then that's to everyone's benefit. If they can't stand the heat and leave the kitchen, then that's a benefit too. On this list, I have seen many messages exhorting people to do things for the right reasons, but NO messages that imply you're not part of our in-crowd so get lost. To the contrary, it appears to be a welcoming group full of people willing to help others get up to speed in a medium we care about. Maybe the various communication styles are not always to everyone's liking, but that's a feature of our delightful diversity. The challenges to our ideas or techniques that we receive in this group are nothing compared to what the wider world will have to say once we get out there. People who have no clue regarding the what, and how, and why of vlogging will feel completely qualified to broadcast biased and uninformed criticism on something they can never hope to understand. I figure if I can get through the gauntlet of you lot, nobody else's voice is going to matter, and I'll have a product that is the stronger for it. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Veoh Networks Announces Financing - Get ready to upload your video
That's the question that sank the dot-coms: It's all innovative, exciting, and ahead of the curve, but how to generate revenue from it? I mean, how am I going to convince people to pay me to help them LAUGH, for pity's sake? I could go in a different, more commercial, direction, but that wasn't the original idea. I could transmit a message about good karma and intrinsic value, guilting people into subscribing or donating lest they incur a karmic debt from enjoying without supporting. Re: [videoblogging] MSM Dialogue
Many of us vlog because we believe the medium to be a tool for change. While we may not necessarily see ourselves as agents of change, we certainly feel we have our own voices that should be raised in support of, and against, those things that affect us. We choose video for its power to affect people in a way that text and audio cannot. The negative voices are raised everywhere, and the MSM replicate those negative messages far and wide under the guise of journalism, which is often just sensationalism. I am particularly aware of the _millions_ of dollars of free publicity given to the Al-Qaeda messages of hate, when the MSM picked up clips from Al Jazeera and beamed them around the world. Bin Laden must have been laughing his azz off. The historical precedent is strong. One voice, with the means of production, and even limited distribution, can influence many. I like Jan's notion of _broadcasting_ our own statements for change. If we can visualize it, we can make others see it too. Laugh your stress away. Laugh for no reason.
