I think you just describe NING, pretty much all those things can be done
there and you have a barrier, in that members need to sign up and login.

The forum side of it is configurable, chat works as a plug in and
everyone has their own page or wall..

It seems to me that we could benefit from a Facebook-style, Ning-style
or Drupal-based site where we could have this same kind of disussion
forum, but where we could also upload/link a lot of other content -
particularly videos - and connect in other ways.

What I want is a bridge between RSS, Twitter, threaded discussions,
 community hub and information archive.

 I want a non-corporate community-owned place where I can go, where
there are lots of online video people, where I can:

 a) post links to things of interest (i do that here sometimes)
 b) Bookmark videos I like (harder to do that here)
 c) chat in asynchronous twitter style but with preserved threads that
allow more than just statement response end
 d) talk about more serious internet video things (i do that here)
 f) Bookmark whole sites/channels/videoblogs, like a vlogroll, but much
larger, and with an aggregated directory of all sites for everyone to
 browse, in categories.
 g) Form groups for different types of people/sites/channels/videos/
 interests
 h) post other types of content - photos, etc
 i) a place for people to come up with coordinate collaborative
 projects and challenges like vbweek
 j) an archive like the videoblogginggroup Wiki for sharing advice
 suggestions

Oh my god, this sounds like Facebook for online video people. But I
HATE Facebook. So how come? I think what I hate most about Facebook
is the lack of boundary between people from different parts of your
life - work, home, hobbies, etc. I want something like Facebook, but
 that's a videoblogging ghetto.

Blip have a service where you can enable cross posting of your videos

What do you have to do to be enabled, they don't say? I'm at a loss to

Anyone know?

RE: [videoblogging] Re: Frequency of Distribution

2009-05-19 Thread Rambos Locker
Every time I sit down to edit I wish I had not shot so much
footage..hehehe. Funny thing is, some of the best videos I've done have
been hurried, dropped onto the time line, music added then rendered
without preview and they turn out little gems. I love it when that
happens.

Actually the new Sony Vegas Production Assistance Plug-in is all about
hands-off process automation, perfect for people who create standard
format videos like daily shows or weekly shows or even same day events.
If these templates could be embedded in the Camera you would see much
more footage presented and not left to rot on stored hard drives.

I too tend to film more than I can edit with a 60GB HDD camcorder. Since
I only shoot spontaneous situations improv-style interactive comedy
(www.mrthyself.com)I approach filming with a motto, Shoot first, ask
questions later. Far too many times there were cases when I didn't have
my cam with me but situation was perfect to be captured. The
availability of huge hard drives in consumer cams allow for possibility
to shoot more noise than signal. By signal I mean something interesting
- worthwhile. In my cam I have a way to divide video clips and delete
the unwanted before I even plug the cam to a computer for backup. So on
my commute from Manhattan to Brooklyn I peacefully edit out the crap
without wasting time when at the PC.

I am thinking about going away from the resource-hungry, albeit storage
efficient, AVCHD codec to get the newest marvel from JVC - GY-HM100U.
Though it uses dual SD-card approach, the video is pristine, let alone
the low-light filming and 3CCD's... Making this switch will make me more
efficient about sensing where worthwhile action is.

I dream about a day that internet has enough universal hi-speed
connectivity to allow raw footage stored online in a huge video pool
from around the world. This way people can both contribute as well as
take from this pool of footage where video can be searched by keywords.
Imagine the possibilities? :) There would have to be some in-camcorder
system for tagging videos, GPS (Sony's consumer HDR-XR520V), as well as
scene/face/motion detection. So the cam writes its EXIF (still cameras
use this for exposure etc) info about what it recognized in the video
scene and tags it into the video file.

I am very lazy when it comes to editing, I have a huge load of footage
sitting on multiple hard drives waiting to be edited. I am hoping that
camcorder manufacturers will soon add ability to add premade editable
titles and end credits right in-camcorder. This way the filmmaker simply
houses the footage between the title and the end credits while on the
road, glues the resulting video, transfers this video file to a
computer and, viola, it's ready for transcoding and publishing. :) It
would be nice to have transcoding ability in camcorder as well but so
that it's redundant allowing to be able to film while this process is
taking place. Imagine, you activate Youtube HD H.264 transcode and
within an hour you get the ready-to-upload file?

Your thoughts??

 Anyway..

I recently bought a camera that connects to your computer via USB and
fits in your pocket. I already had an HD camera, but I wanted something
for run-n-gun. My goal was to achieve daily video output via filming at
least 5 upload-worthy segments each week, or at least in one day, so I
could release them during the week.

What I found was that depending on what your style is, those cameras
can hold a ton of footage. If your style is to run the camera and hope
something happens, you won't get much. If your style is to recognize
potential moments and be prepared, what you end up with is a bunch of
snippets that amount to more footage than you needed for that week.

Actually, I should back up here. Video is how I express myself. It's
my hobby as well as what I do for money. When I'm not creating video for
a client, I'm creating video for myself.. because this is what I do. If
this were a business application, it wouldn't matter how much I shoot,
because it would all be funneled into the allocated release date and TRT
of the production and anything that's excess would be discarded...
Except, I don't shoot video to discard it. I shoot video to express it.

Yes.
You can request reconversion with a Pro account, but actually if have
a free account you can email them and they'll do it anyway. Or at
least, they always have for me. Just tell them which videos you want
to reconvert.
And yes, Blip Pro gives you the option to convert your file to a .m4v
iPod compatible h264 file, which will play in quicktime. This will
also then play instead of the lower quality flash video in their Show

Hey guys,
Just like to share with you all what we're doing to publicize
k9athlete.com and ask for feedback and additional suggestions.

It's not rocket science, but I thought it might be of interest to
some on this list and thought that some of you might offer some good
feedback.

We're hitting facebook rather hard right now.

---
Created Facebook Page
---
Created a page for the site (which for some reason is not being found
in searches, but that is another matter.

I've posted development screenshots and informative articles from the
site on the page and we currently have 61 fans. Not a lot, but not
bad either for still being a totally closed development site.

---
Created Facebook Application
---
We're creating a facebook Application,
Dog Sport Team of the Week that will highlight outstanding dog sport
performances and allow facebook users to nominate someone for the title.

It's our first, crack at this, but we'll be adding more as we get
this one done.

---
Hosting Weekly Online Radio Show
---
I'm hosting a weekly dog sport radio show, K9Athlete Radio on
BlogtalkRadio, and we're gearing up for our second show, whch will
feature the president of a dock jumping organization and, crossing my
fingers, an 82.5 year old woman who just got her MACH title in
Agility, a very well regarded agility title, and a stunning
performance from an 82 year old woman.

---
Open Letter
---
I've also written an Open Letter to Dog Sport Professionals that is
posted on the front page of the site and will be going out to every
dog sport list and site I can get my hands on.

This is a letter specifically for dog sport professionals laying out
what the site is and how it will work for them, and trying to get by
the fears of conflicts of interest. No small task... It's also
supposed to be my foot in the door in grabbing a couple more
outstanding team members.

We will be following up with an Open Letter to the Dog Sport
Community for the dog sport community and An Open Letter to Dog
Sport Retailers.

Each will be posted on lists, the site and direct email.

---
Online Video - need suggestions
---
I will be doing some online video to publicize the site soon, but
it's still a bit too early, and I'm not a big fan of myself in the
traditional videoblogging role. Suggestions here would be great!

I'm thinking of some pro footage, which I have access to, but not
sure how to structure it.

That's pretty much it.

Thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

If this is deemed not germane to the list, I'll be happy to take it
off list.

I just thought this would be of interest to some here.

You're welcome Adam. I had no problems playing it apart from the
squashed aspect ratio of 1.5 and the audio out of sync. Try creating a

Thanks Rambo. I think it turned out to be a strange combination of both
aspect ration and frame rate. I tried running it through every
compression
app I have, and nothing worked. Finally, I ended up just bringing the
files
into Premiere one by one, adjusting fps and aspect, re-aligning the
audio
and video tracks (they somehow got disassociated) and then rendering out
from there.

Incredible hassle. I'm not sure why Vegas did this, as I was pretty
explicit
in my compression settings I thought. But this definitely turned me off
from
that product. Back to Premiere, the devil I know.

My solution was to render out to Huffy then convert to VP6 flv format

RE: [videoblogging] Re: Profit sharing for film crews

2009-01-07 Thread Rambos Locker
It definitely something I'm looking at Ron. There were 700 mostly
international paddlers competing at that event in the Cook Islands over
10 days and all of them are potential customers as they want to see
themselves competing and relive the fun they had at the event. The
organizers employed me to shoot video from a jet ski and land to play
back at the presentations and pubs on a big projection screen each nite
to attract the paddlers to the sponsors venue, the Trader Jacks Bar and
Restaurant. The footage was raw straight from the camera so it just
played clip after clip and was actually pretty good. Then from all that
footage I have to compile a DVD.

But putting it online and charging per download would be cheaper for
everyone. Sure there is still the problem of people sharing downloads,
but they do the same with DVD's anyway. But if it was say $2 per
download, I doubt many people would bother copying and sharing it.

It also gives the sponsors more exposure by having subtle ads within the
video, which could also be another income stream.

I'm already capturing video of events for Surf ski, outrigger paddling
and stand up paddling and supplying footage or finished media to other
web sites, but it's kind of specialized and I have participated in these
events for over 20 years. If I had to video a dog show, I would not have
a clue on what to do, so I don't see how a community effort would be
advantageous.

But I'm all ears.

Neither do mine, but they are all related, if your passion is video.

There are stories to be told about all kinds of things - dog sports,
outrigger racing, geocaching, brewing beer, I've touched on a couple
of things that some people here have interest in.

What if I were in Fiji during a large outrigger event and decided to
shoot it?

If rambo were aware of it and selling pay to play short videos for
say, $2, then I could have a 50/50 split with him. A dollar a video.
Video gets 200 hits, I make a hundred bucks - do this with rambo, a
dog sport site, a brewmeister, a winery, a gaming community, or some
other well developed community interest that is doing pay to play,
and you've made yourself a thousand dollars for 20 minutes of video
on ten outings.

There's no reason this could not be done with ad revenue either. I
should be able to do well with ads placed on free video and our live
radio (online) and audio podcasts.

I don't think it's a bad deal, and it's residual. It keeps coming in
if the community has staying power.

Of course it's not there yet, nobody's doing pay to play, but we will
be, and we'll be doing it faster and better if people like those on
this list are involved.

And let's be serious, it's not like there's anything coming down the
pike from Coca Cola or GM for advertising on independent media.

The future of independent media is to hook up with cottage media
entities and independent mom pop operations and fill their needs
for content and advertising.

I don't want to beat a dead horse, though, and I can see that there's
little interest on the list in entertaining the concept of making
money through profit sharing with community developers and small
businesses.

It's a bummer though. It could be the big thing that makes producing
independent video profitable, or at least not a total money pit. It
also could put different kinds of creative people in the same room
and on the same page fostering who knows what kind of exciting
possibilities.

I appreciate your responses, Kath.

Good luck in all you do.

Gee I don't get much of a chance to set white balance, focus and compose
the shots on the back of a Jet Ski. I just put the Canon HF100 in Easy
mode press record and hang on.hahaha

But seriously, there are plenty of people who buy paddling magazines
every month to catch up on the events around the world so why not pay
for online content but in video form. I guess it's about changing
peoples media habits from one to the other. For me video has far more
impact and content, and is entertaining.

There are tremendous opportunities with this kind of stuff, Rambo.

I'm already capturing video of events for Surf ski, outrigger paddling
and stand up paddling and supplying footage or finished media to other
web sites, but it's kind of specialized and I have participated in
 these
events for over 20 years. If I had to video a dog show, I would not

Well, there is a lot more overlap than you'd think in shooting flying
dogs and shredding surfers.

Simple things like not zooming constantly, white balancing choosing
the best place to set up so the crowd is visible.

So, I do think there would be some possibilities there, but it might
not be for you.

You've got a schtick, a niche market.

I'd actually see you more as the community curator, farming out the
work to wet video people on the coasts, as opposed to shooting dog
stuff for me. I'd be more likely to shoot a paddling session on Lake
Michigan for you, and if you had a good track record of selling vids
online, I'd probably do it - I like paddling (lived on Oahu for a few
years - kind of majored in surfing and scuba), and it wouldn't be
that much of a big deal to go shoot some nice stuff then cut it and
upload it to your site.

Then you cut checks to me as the videos fly out of the server.

It would be a nice supplement to my personal economy.

All it would really take are the technical skills to get the job done
- good in low light? Shoot some band stuff at local bars to
supplement your wedding videography business.

Good at shooting high action sport? Shoot some dog video for my site.

Good at getting telling story? Shoot it all!

I'm with you Rambo. I think pay to play could be big in 2009.

My opinions, for the one thing Im not short of is opinions:

Training videos that are useful to a niche are one of the more likely
sorts of videos that some people will pay for.

I did not like the example prices you gave at all. Depending on the
subject matter, training dvds and suchlike sometimes command a high
price tag, and different niche's will have their own ideas about how
much their stuff is worth, but I dont know as the internet customer
will bite at prices that may not compare well in terms of cost/minute
compared to dvd.

I think the subscription model is more of a winner, but again it
depends on the niche in question. And it works best if there is a
fairly prolific quantity of new material added on a regular basis.

When I think of multiple people shows collaborating, a subscription
model also makes sense to me, if it adds enough value quantity of
material to make a viewer more likely to bite.

Collaboration has a number of big hurdles to overcome, such as all the
issues that can make human collaboration in general quite tricky
(clash of ego's, who is in control, differences of opinion, viewing
others in the same niche as competition, etc etc). Then there are the
technical issues, and also an apparent lack of large numbers of people
with both the passion for the niche and the video skills, and the
time, to pull this sort of thing off. This stuff can be overcome but
it goes part of the way to explaining why we havent seen more of this
sort of thing thus far.

Whether its because of economic woetime, or issues of future
sustainability of our ways of life, local and community sounds like an
important part of the future. The internet, and video, will surely
figure into this in important ways, but I can hardly begin to guess
how it may turn out or exactly what form it will take. Still there are
some possible scenarios where it doesnt figure into things much at
all, never happens, where other forces lead us down a very different
path.

So far I have not gotten a sense that videoblogging other forms of
video on the internet have opened up many lucrative opportuinities for
many people. Those who make it through traditional mass media are
still the vast majority, and in honesty I havent seen a video for
years that made me think different or that there was about to be a big
change. The long tail has made me a tad more hopeful about humanity
but has massively failed to live up to the hype so far, in almost
every respect.

Cheers

RE: [videoblogging] MP4 video track missing

2009-01-06 Thread Rambos Locker
I suspect it's the aspect ratio or frame rate causing the problem. This
happens to me also when ever I try and up load to blip any size other
than 4x3 or 16x9 out of Sony Vegas with a weird frame rate.

Try rendering out in the aspect ratio it was recorded in or try one of
these at 30fps
 640 x 480
 480 x 360
 320 x 240
My solution was to render out to Huffy then convert to VP6 flv format
in Sorensen Squeeze, then up that to blip which will NOT re-transcode
the flv file.

Much better quality, but this may not be your solution.

Thanks Gena, I kept the best for the DVD. I shot 3 hrs of footage every
day for 10 days, so reviewing and selecting was very time consuming.
Thanks for the comment re running away, I take that meant it looked like

Smooth playing on Firefox 3 on Vista. Made me want to run away from
home but then I remembered I can't swim.

I think it would be stronger if it was shorter, maybe 1.5 minutes or
just a minute. You have great shots but you don't need to show all of
them, some are repetative.

It will be hard but just pick the ones that are the strongest and I
think you will have it.

It was like the first part your actions were a contradiction to the

The second part set the mood for the end of the day.

$129.00. This is an INCREDIBLE deal. It does not come

this will be
a non issue. The pro version of Sony Vegas compares to
Final Cut Pro
very favorabily. It has multi camera editing, a pro

Normally this

I have used and loved Sony Vegas since I have started

can't speak highly enough of the software and now that
you can get a
version of the pro software for around 137 bucks
shipped, it's an
awesome deal.

Download the trial version from Sony and check it out

And if you are on Mac and have bootcamp, try it out as
well. For the

The one thing I don't like is that the mp4 option for
Vegas does not
fast start. I use the .mov settings and a custom
template that I
have created.

Under the project settings I use good for video
rendering quality
my custom fram size is 400X300
frame rate is 29.97
field order is progressive scan
pixel ascpect ration is 1.00
video format is Sorenson Video 3
24bpp color
Quality is set to 50%
Data rate is basic
and the target rate is 200KBps
and the keyframe is 30

This gives you a good looking video, IMO. The file size
could be
smaller and MP4 will definatly give you that, but again
no fast start.

I just found a link eariler today about some hacks that
I am going to

Hello,

Newbie question. I know nothing about video blogging.
Working on
first principles, the way I'd do it would be to create a
wordpress
page and embed a youtube video in it. Would that be the
way to go?
Would there be other ways to do it?

Also, what's the ballpark length of text on the
wordpress page? 300
words? 700words? Too short, and it seems the blog is
hardly worth
reading, too long and the attention fades.

I intend putting up footage of laughter clubs in action,
discussing
what produces fake laughing vs real laughing. There's
already quite a
lot of videos of laughter clubs on youtube (also under
laughter yoga.)

Cheers,

How to repair a corrupted MPEG4 file?

 I have a file I shot with an Xacti CG65 that's an
H.264 MPEG4 file.
When I go to launch it in Quicktime or VLC, I get this
error:

An invalid public movie atom was found in the file.

Does anyone know how to repair/recover this kind of
file? It used to
be with MPEG1 and MPEG2 movies, you could simply slice
off the first
X bytes of the movie, but MPEG4 is a container format,
so it's not
 headerless.

I've done the basic Google thing and all of the tips

 iMovie
 Final Cut Pro
 VLC
 Quicktime
 VisualHub

RE: [videoblogging] Re: Best Delivery Codec

2008-05-01 Thread Rambos Locker
Steve you are dead right, Gspot also claims the video to be recommended
playback 6912 x 384 (super stretched). Not sure how that happened as it
was encoded in WinFF, possibly I typed the preset wrong. Plays ok in
most other players for me so didn’t notice the error till I tried VLC.
Thanks for finding this. No this video was done before I discovered
MainConcept and was meant to be encoded at 704 x 384.

Anyone have any ideas on a quality fast start and Ipod workflow out of
Vegas?

Heath, do you encode for Ipod and fast start out of Vegas in the formats
on your site or use Blip Pro ?

Not sure. Assuming the following file was made using this method, I
tried to test it:

HYPERLINK
http://blip.tv/file/get/Rambooc1-MadMooloolaba980.mp4http://blip.-tv/f
ile/get/-Rambooc1--MadMooloolaba980-.mp4

But I had very big problem with that file. Both Quicktime VLC think
the resolution of that video is 6912x384, which causes a hugely
stretched mess when I try to play it back. I guess its not just me
that will have this problem - any ideas?

But yeah in general I had heard MainConcept are pretty good at writing
encoders. They have been aquired by DivX so who knows what will happen
in future. Bear in mind that AVC is just another name for h264, so you
are creating the same type of video, just the encoder is better at
doing its job.

Cheers

[videoblogging] Mad Mooloolaba - The Movie

2008-04-22 Thread Rambos Locker
This is something completely different to my usual Videos, it’s about
Clubs sharing the “Aloha” and having a great time. Very moody,
entertaining and different.
I think you might like this one Rox, partly inspired by BeachWalks, but
with a crazy touch.

Shot this with a Canon TX1 partly SD and some HD

RE: [videoblogging] HD at 500Kbit/s

2008-04-15 Thread Rambos Locker
I have been trying to get the same results with footage that I have
shot. Sometimes I get close and other times it’s horrible. There doesn’t
seem to be a set workflow that works for all footage, but it is
fascinating trying to do so. Even the different versions of h. 264 give
different results.

Don’t know where this is all heading or what the benefits will be as the
net to home gets faster and moves into the living room TV. I guess it’s
a money thing in the end.

RE: [videoblogging] Re: Does the file size of video matter anymore?

2008-02-04 Thread Rambos Locker
Steve, the quality at that size is incredible. I’ve played around with
Divx in SD footage and got my best results, but nothing like that.
Outputting the best quality from the Cam still seems to be the key to
stunning video.

I have been inspired by this video:

HYPERLINK
http://www.flashvideofactory.com/test/DEMO720_Heima_H264_500K.htmlhttp
://www.flashvid-eofactory.-com/test/-DEMO720_Heima_-H264_500K.-html

So that video is 1280x720 25fps but the bitrate is only 500K :)

So that video which is naerly 4 minutes long, is only 15.5MB in size,
but 720p resolution :)

In not sure which encoder settings he used. Granted it is possible to
see various
compression artifacts here and there, as the bitrate is much lower than
would be
recommended for such resolutions, but even so, Im very impressed. Other
issues such as
playback performance on slower machines could be an issue, but ooh
nonetheless :)

Cheers

Good question. I think the vast majority of people are probably
watching things on the web. Just on my own site it probably averages
out to about 7 of 10 people watching on the site. And I think I have a
pretty heavily videoblogger skewed bunch of people watching.

Robert's mic is indeed pretty amazing. The mic is so small, you can
thread
it through sweaters and tape it in from behind for invisible micing.

As someone mentioned earlier, wind noise is always a problem.

But I'm not sharing that info without dinner dessert.

Rox, how do you deal with wind noise on the beach?

Evidently if you buy their gear, they have a free service where

they take into account things like nearby local news stations and
stadium-type venues and help you select frequencies to tune your

  Yes, you

 than
  toys ..
and unless you use them in a cornfield in Iowa (away from
 cellphones,
computers, pager transmitters and the like) you *will* get
 interference.

ALSO, you said you want to get two. Do you want to *use* both at

  need both
on different frequencies that will not interer with each other,
 and two

  receivers
into one plug for your camcorder.

[videoblogging] Point Of View mounted cameras.

2007-12-10 Thread Rambos Locker
Hi everyone, just joined this group and see that what I do with video
cameras is different to what most people are doing. Just briefly, what I
do is mount multiple waterproof cameras to an Outrigger canoe and
capture ocean racing and wipeout footage etc on waves, then edit the
footage into a short entertaining slightly whacky movie. I use 3
different types of cams for that, a Pentax Optio W10, two GoPro Hero3
cams and a bullet cam connected to a Canon camcorder. Basically it puts
you in the driver’s seat of the canoe as I paddle in races and on ocean
waves, thus POV (point of view). Some of the challenges I face are water
droplets on the lens, sun direct into the lens, damage from wipeouts and
lots of footage to edit as the cams are turned on and left running till
the battery runs flat or the tape or SD card fill up.

Any one else out there doing stuff like this or have suggestions?

My Videos (usually under 5 mins ) can be played from the menu on the
right here HYPERLINK
