Richard Amirault: If this `helmet cam' incident happened in Massachusetts
it would seem that it would be a violation.

Under the same fact pattern, no it would not.

Graber's video recording was not surreptitious, done with sinister motive,
posed no public harm and was a continuation of lawful conduct engaged on
public lands BEFORE the police officer stopped him. Consequently criteria
established under Mapp vs. Ohio make the evidence worthless; there are no
 two ways about that.

Sorry, a very good case can be made that the recording *was* surreptitious.
Yes, it was in plain sight. BUT was it obvious to the officer that it was a
recording device .. and, I think more importantly, was it obvious that it
was in record mode?

On March 5th of this year Anthony Graber drove his motorcycle recklessly,
until being pulled over by a Maryland State plainclothes policeman. Graber
wore a GoPro HD helmet-cam, recording his antics prior and after the
 police
stop. He was on a public highway, in clear daylight and the camcorder was
 in
plain sight (GoPros are rather bulky and VERY obvious, if you've never
 seen
 one).

After the incident Graber posted his vid on YouTube, including scenes of
 his
 stop by the policemen.
(snip)

So the paragraph above is misleading. ... recording his antics prior and
after the police stop. By after the police stop I took it to mean after
the stop was finished and done and he was on his way again. I could also
mean after the police stopped him, which is what happend as we read the next
paragraph.

Despite being in plain sight, and very obvious, how obvious was it that it
was in 'record mode? Unless he stated verbaly that his conversation with
the officer was being recorded (giving the officer the chance to order him
to stop recording) they may certainly have a valid case (depending on state
law).

You *can* photograph and video record from the public ways. You (in many
states) cannot record the audio of conversations without permission despite
the location.

 Howdy Richard:
Irrespective your critique of my prose (so sorry I confused you, my bad),
 I
respectfully disagree. Please bear with me while I explain..?

18 USC §2510 and related parts define what wiretapping is and is not,
 and
Graber's actions do not appear to meet that criteria. Subsequent federal
 law
also defines the common term, Single Party Consent in relation to
 subject
matter; and, in Mapp vs. Ohio (1961) the U.S. Supreme Court ruled, in
 part,
that states have no right to abuse the Fourth Amendment (even when a
 Search
Warrant is otherwise lawfully granted) when other Constitutional elements
are in play (and they are here; Graber is a YouTube video blogger, which
 is
also protected conduct as PRESS under the First Amendment).

Graber had no obligation (whatsoever) to disclose whether or not he was
recording, both parties were in a public place not providing any
expectation of privacy as supported by relative case law. Moreover of
the thirty-eight (38) states and D.C. that have wiretap laws on the books,
few have sought to test issues beyond Constitutional limits (because most
 fail miserably in the doing).

Well, I'm no lawyer .. but I do know that the law is (can be) different in
various places unless superceded by federal law.

The following is a partial quote from a website I found:
===
In Jean v. Massachusetts State Police, police officers conducted a
warrantless search of Paul Pechonis's home. (1) Unbelmownst to them, the
search was audiotaped and videotaped by a nanny-cam. Pechonis later gave
the recording to Mary Jean, who posted it on her Web site with commentary
criticizing the local District Attorney. The officers claimed that Jean had
violated state law by willfully disclosing the contents of a recording made
without their prior consent. (2) They ordered Jean to remove the recording.
(3) The district court granted Jean's request for preliminary injunctive
relief and the First Circuit affirmed, concluding that the First Amendment
likely protected Jean's disclosure of the recording. (4) However, the First
Circuit implied that Pechonis had violated the Massachusetts recording law.
(5)

Massachusetts and at least twelve other states criminalize recording a
communication without the knowledge or consent of all parties to the
communication. (6) While some of these states' laws could be construed to
exempt some recording of police, (7) others offer no textual basis for such
an exemption. (8) Citizens in several states have been arrested, (9) and in
some cases convicted, (10) for taping police conduct.

This Comment argues that citizen tape recording provides a necessary check
against police abuses of power and furthers privacy values underlying the
Constitution and other laws. But police officers' interests in privacy and
safety must be balanced as well. Therefore, states should permit citizens to
record police officers in the line of duty without those officers' consent,
as long as their recordings are made in a physically unintrusive manner and
do not capture police communications that police could reasonably expect not
to be recorded.

I. THE STATUS OF STATE RECORDING LAWS

Massachusetts and a number of other states prevent citizens from recording
police officers' conversations, even within citizens' own homes.
Massachusetts itself broadly prohibits the willful secret[] record[ing] of
any wire or oral communication by any citizen without the consent of all
parties to the communication. (11) Accordingly, Massachusetts's highest
court has refused to exempt citizens who record police officers, even when
the recording captures alleged police misconduct. (12)

As the First Circuit recognized, the First Amendment protects individuals
like Jean who distribute recordings of illegal police conduct. But it
probably does not protect individuals like Pechonis who produce the
recordings. In Bartnicki v. Vopper, the Supreme Court suggested that
disclosure is protected when it constitutes the publication of truthful
information of public concern. (13) The Court explicitly declined, however,
to protect obtaining the relevant information unlawfully. (14)
Furthermore, [t]he First Amendment [does not become] a license ... to
intrude by electronic means ... simply because the person subjected to the
intrusion is reasonably suspected of committing a crime. (15) Thus, the
Amendment does not excuse citizens from state liability for recording
police, even where citizens allege police misconduct.
===

I remember a case (which I could not find on-line just now) where a man
recorded, with a visible audio cassette recorder, the police stopping him
for something or other. As far as I remember he was later convicted of some
sort of wiretap violation because he did not get the officers consent.
This was in my state of Massachusetts.

I don't necessarily agree

Good luck. I checked out that clip. I've never done it that way, but it
certainly would be better than actually cutting out portions of the upper

However, that clip is only *after* you have synced the tracks (which he does

 Greetings,

I bought a second camera (used, cheap on Craigslist) to help me make
better videos and I just tried editing two simultaneously filmed small
 clips.

There must be a better way! I am learning as I go and the only way I
could figure out how to do this was to put both clips on the timeline,
take excerpts from clip#2 and overlay them onto clip#1 - but I had to play
around with placement because the time marker just treats the clips like
one long clip on the timeline. I had to read lips to make sure I placed
it in the correct spot to match the sound.

I was hoping for a way to edit both clips simultaneously on the same
timeline - I sure hope that makes sense. I could line the 2 vids up with
a clapper, but I need to see them both at the same time to decide which
one overlays the other. Is this possible?

One of the best ways to sync video is to sync the sound. Put both clips on
the timeline. One above the other. Expand (left/right) the timeline so that
the audio waveform is easier seen. Slide one clip left/right until it
matches the other clip. Test it by muting the audio from clip A put viewing
the video of clip B. Once everything is synced, LOCK both to each other.

There are fancier ways to edit the resulting video, but one way is to cut
out sections of the top video where you want to show the bottom video (be
sure that you shut off Ripple Edit)

I'm starting a new blog idea and need some extra lighting.
Many segments will be based indoors in a poorly lit room, talking head
style against an open glass window with daylight outside and a
laminated poster stuck on the window behind them . The light from
 outside is good,

good?? Seems to me it's pretty bad It's giving you problems .. some you
haven't even discovered yet.

but of course the subject with their back to the open
window will be in shadow due to the poor room lighting.
So I need some spot lighting in order to light up the subject evenly.
I figure ever massive lighting behind the camera to light up the whole
room, or some smaller diffuse spots on either side of the subject up
close and just out of shot on two tripods (hopefully no reflections
 form the laminated poster).
Anyone have any experience in this sort of situation?

You didn't say what direction the window faces (N,S,E or W) Does direct
sunlight enter the window at all? Mixing natural and artificial light can
give problems with color balance. You may need considerable artificial light
to overcome the brightness of the outdoor light. If your indoor light is
balanced for tungsten then the outdoor scene will have a distinct blue
tint. Better would be lights balanced for daylight. Better yet, IMHO,
would be to loose the window altogether .. things would be a *lot* simpler.

Hmmm ... those lenses are *accessory* lenses, not main lenses. In other

well as a real lens .. as in a SLR or DSLR of the same focal length.

Interesting that the main Sanyo site for this camcorder does not mention
those lenses (at least that I can find) .. I did find them listed as
accessories for the camcorder at BH Photo.

Also interesting to note is this camcorders manual settings:
The HD1010 features versatile manual controls for advanced shooting. The
following settings can be manually adjusted according to the shooting
situation: Manual focus adjustment (16 settings); aperture adjustment (6
stops); exposure compensation (1.8 EV, 0.3 EV steps); shutter speed (13

And the 7 frames per second single frame shooting mode.

Can anybody please recommend a good quality (not too pricey please) boom
pole for a one person team?

I don't understand what a one person team is. A team, by definition
seems to be a minimum of two.

I have an Audio-Technica AT875R shot gun mic which I'll be using for my
videofilmings and would like a boom pole to go with it. Holding a pole
 myself is not an option.

A boom pole holder may work.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=boom+pole+holderN=0InitialSearch=yes
but only for a subject that is not moving about.

Please give me some guidance what features to look for in a pole, where
and what best to purchase, etc.

Some poles have the mic cable built-in, and of course the length varies.

You can always go with the Home Depot / Lowes extendable paint pole. But you
will need to purchase an attachment to convert the end to hold the mic.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Make-mic-boom-pole-w-adapter-4-rode-other-microphones_W0QQitemZ220557427871QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item335a3f449f
and, of course, this also requires you to run the mic cable the length of
the pole.

If you are shooting outdoors you will definitely need a windscreen. The foam
type may work well enough, or it may not. Better is the furry or dead
cat type of windscreen. Even better is a blimp type with a furry cover.

If you have a person to hold the mic/boom pole be sure that they have
headphones and can actually *hear* the audio from the mic. Otherwise they
won't know if they are holding the mic / pole properly. This may be a long
cable running out of the camcorder to the person, or .. you can do double
system sound and record to a high quality digital recorder. In that case
the recorder can be carried by the boom pole operator and and there is less
chance of someone tripping on a long cable from the camera. You will need to
sync-up the sound in editing, but it's not as hard as you might think.

YouTube chooses a frame from the exact middle of the video timeline for the
second choice. I don't know exactly where the first and last choice are
taken. Obviously it is somewhere near the beginning and the end of the
video.

What about figuring out how far in from the end those first and last
thumbnails are (you'll have to look on YouTube and then try to find those
frames in your Vegas timeline) .. then .. make whatever thumbnail you want
.. and add it to the *end* of your existing video so that it will be chosen
as the third choice. I would make an extended still frame selection, not a
single frame insert, to maximize your chance of it getting picked by
YouTube. You could even fade to black before you add the thumbnail image at
the end .. so that 99% of those watching will click away before the image
comes up .. and even if they don't click away .. I don't think it would be a
problem.

Very few people will listen closely wearing headphones while watching

music would cover any low level hiss.

The mike I used for this vid is Electrovoice 635A(B). I was wondering if
anyone can recommend a hissless mike that is unidirectional (captures only
the talker not the background) with XLR input.

 Any help is truly appreciated..

That was a 635 with a *lot* of experience ;-) BUT .. those subjects were
not mic savvy .. they did not know (or if they did .. they did not care)
how to properly hold the mic. Sometimes it was OK, sometimes it was off to
the side, sometimes it was not aimed at the mouth, sometimes it was too
close. THAT is the perfect situation for an omnidirectional mic (like the
635) Using a unidirectional mic in that same situation may not have given
you the audio you desired.

ALSO .. the 635 is a dynamic mic .. there is NO active electronics inside
the mic .. therefore it cannot create any hiss Any hiss is coming from
whatever the mic is connected to.

You can purchase blank mic flags that come with foam inserts. A bit of

and you have a mic flag that (on camera at least) is hard to tell that it
wasn't custom made.

The drawback, of course, is that you have to put the markers in manually and

your looking for, but thought I'd let you know.

I have a Canon Vixia with a 3.5mm jack input for the microphone and I have
just bought a Shure SM58 microphone to use with it.

The Shure is XLR so I had to get a cable which had the XLR at one end and
3.5mm jack at the other. I got the cable off Ebay easily.

It does work and the only thing is that it is only recording on the left
track. Not sure yet if there is a problem. Maybe that is what it is
supposed to do - Mono mic so just going to one side.
(snip)

It's the adaptor that you got. Some of them are wired to put the XLR mic
signal to both sides of the audio .. and in addition they also have a stereo
1/8 plug. The one you have is just a mono plug/cable.

I have two of the Electro Voice 635a mics and they are very lasting.

Now my question is; Isn't the RE50B omnidirectional - meaning it will not
isolate the unwanted background street noise.

Yes it is omnidirectional ... but so is the 635a. Just because it is
omnidirectional does not mean it will capture all the unwanted background
street noise. Sensitivity is also an issue. When your mouth is a few inches
away from the mic it and the background noise is both much lower in volume
and much farther away .. you will hear mostly your voice.

Remember, the RE50 is can be seen daily on TV someplace in the country being
used by on-the-street newscasters. If it wasn't good TV newcasters wouldn't
be using it.

Also what's the difference between the RE50B and the RE50N/D-B. The
Electrovoice site says that the RE50N/D-B adds high-output Neodymium
capsule magnet. What does that do?

It gives the mic a higher output (more signal)

I'm curious what benefits brings upgrading from my 635a to RE50N/D-B.

Well, since the RE50 is nothing but a 635 inside .. you get a more
professional looking housing that reduces handling noise more than you have
now ... you get the Neodymium magnet for higher output (but you *can* get
the 635 with the same option if you want)

Your right, the camera has a 1/8 jack not a 1/4. I always get confused on
 the sizes.

The bhp link for the XLR-1/8 adapter cable would work for the physical
connection but don't I also need to supply power for the Mic?

As someone else mentioned you only need power for a condenser mic that does
not have an internal battery option.

Ideally I would just like a handheld mic that plugs directly into my
Panasonic TM300 that provides acceptable sound

There are many dynamic mics that will work. There is a class of dynamic
mic called eng (for Electronic News Gathering) that are especially well
suited for this type of application.

Some of these include:

Electro Voice RE-50
Shure VP-64 (this is the one I use)
Electro Voice 635a (note: the RE-50 is basically the 635 *inside* a special
housing to minimize handling noise)

I'm happy with my VP-64 but if I would buy another mic I would get the
RE-50.

I am looking for a traditional hand held microphone to use for
man-on-the-street news interviews. Everything I can find is either an XLR
 mic or a toy.

I have a Panasonic TM300 which is a nice small camera but has a
traditional 1/4 microphone jack. I know there are XLR converters which
would be fine but all the ones I have seen are super huge and bulky, which
kind of defeats the purpose of the small camera.

So can anyone suggest a decent microphone with the right connector or a
 small XLR converter? Thanks.

I *seriously* doubt your camcorder has a 1/4 mic jack ... most likely
it's a 1/8 jack. How about something like this for an adaptor..

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/158476-REG/Hosa_Technology_XVM_101F_Mini_Stereo_Male_to.html

(search for Hosa XVM 101F at bhphotovideo.com if link is broken) You'd need
to add a regular XLR mic cable to reach from your subject to the camera and
you'd need to use a dynamic mic or a condensor mic with a built-in battery
since you won't have phantom power with this setup.

 1. I was asked to film a short 1-2 min clip for one small company. The
president does workshops for his clients and I'd like to get some shots of
that. However, I checked out the room where he's doing the workshops and
it's pretty dark, ceiling florescent lighting, dark sand color walls and
kind or cramped. I figured out the angle from which I will film, but I'm
afraid there won't be enough lighting. I do have lights that I use for
studio type picture taking (2 of them) and I will bring those, but in
order to get use of them, they'd have to be upclose to people I guess.
However, then the lamps would be seen in the picture.
How do you usually resolve the issue of lighting in small, having no
windows rooms? I was thinking about increasing the exposure as well if I
see that there's still not enough lighting with my both lamps that I have.
But any other ideas would be helpful.

Assuming that the ceiling is some sort of white ... shut OFF the florescent
lights and use your lights but aim them up at the ceiling. They can be off
to the side, out of the camera shot. Hoping that your lights are reasonably
powered. Try it and see. If your light are not powerful enough than you'll
have to aim them directly at the subjects .. but in either case shut off the
fluorescents as mixing different colored lights is not a good idea.

 Mine was the 6th message.

 It's been a wild ride from 2004 to 2010.

I remember the first Vloggercon in NYC in 2005 and the second in SF in
 2006.

My book is a nice how to guide for people starting out in online video. For
some of us who have been putting video on blogs wince 2004, it's seems so
 easy now.

When we started there was no YouTube, we were worried that our videos would
get popular, because that would cost us money.

Now we've got a myriad of free hosting solutions for have lots of great
 features.

But there still are and will always be people starting out.

That's where my book comes in. In the book I talk about choosing a camera,
getting good sound and lighting, and how to conduct interviews. Also, how to
edit and post, and how to go live.

I've interviewed a number of Yahoo! videoblogging group members.

I made a post today called, Where To Buy Get Seen. It's a very simple post
showing where people can order the book.

 It's at:
 http://bit.ly/buy-getseen

In addition to that the book has a website,
 http://stevegarfield.com/getseen

Over there I'm posting video interviews that I made for the book and there
are discussion forums for people who read the book who might have some
 questions.

So that's it. Just wanted to drop by and give you guys an update.

As far as loudness is concerned ... most every editing programs have a way

You could also use dual system sound by recording the audio on a seperate
digital recorder (and using a lav mic on your subject, or a hand held mic)
and using *that* audio for your finished product. You would delete, or mute
the Flip audio and sync up the external recorders audio to the video (it's

Great Video Michael,

I've been teaching this digital media class the last three semesters, and
technology is a huge barrier to creativity.

First, we only have PCs, so we can't go with FCP, so we go with Premiere
Pro, which is functionally find, but has all sorts of issues dealing with
different types of files/codecs. I had to teach stuff like, if you have an
.mp4 file, you must first convert it to .mov with quicktime, and sometimes
the audio won't import so you have to export separately - etc.

This doesn't even cover the always pragmatic issue of compression, disc
space, and problems with the university's secure network and new adobe
programs not working etc.

It's so frustrating, and it would be so cool if there was one video engine
as you describe, because, at least there would, hypothetically, only be one
set of issues to deal with.

I look forward to continuing this conversation.

It's interesting that, since 2005, when I started vlogging I've been, pretty
much unsuccessfully trying to marry my very fun and exciting experience
vlogging with my research. Although, I did have a student do a thesis on the
video blog community, and a proceedings paper, and I made a video for the
internet researchers conference, it hasn't been very fullfilling.

At the same time, my vlogging has fallen off and been very sporadic.

I'm trying to get excited and passionate again (about some variation on
video and the web) - I'm thinking maybe the open video conference may be
just the ticket, so I'm considering coming to New Yourk in June, if I can
get some funds.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but that never stopped me before.

Does anyone know if it's possible to clear videos from the MIRO queue that
have not yet downloaded?

I've been looking through help and stuff, and also can't find a contact for
question, or a discussion board or anything.

It's my anal nature that, if I don't want to watch something, I want to
delete it from the queue even though I haven't downloaded it. Keeps
everything organized and neat, and I can do it in other aggregators.

There is no such thing as white point There IS white balance but that

Use the MANUAL setting to set the camera for proper exposure. Page 38 in the

I respectfully disagree because I lived the analog to digital conversion
life.

It cost more in time, conversions and stuff you have buy. I had a analog
tape camera that in order to use footage I had to buy an analog to digital
convert (Pyro A/V Link) hook it up, find software to convert (my editing
software at the time didn't like Pyro) and then bring it into my software
 to edit and transcode again.

Nothing was said about analog ... it was digital MiniDv tape.

My mistake - take out the analog tape and replace it with digital tape. I
still think it is wrong to invest in a fading technology.

Everything fails - that is why you make backups and do the best you can to
 reduce the gotchas.

A backup on video tape will last a *lot* longer than on a DVD or a hard

Re: [videoblogging] Re: the coming Broadband limit?

Heath,

It was both the supreme court and the FCC. First, the supreme court ruled,
as you said, that cable was not a communication network, so not covered by
common carriage, so they could have a monopoly on their lines. Then later
the FCC ruled the same for DSL, ironically, to increase competition. The
idea being that if the cable companies could be monopolies, so could the DSL
companies, so we'd have a duopoly. (Of course, if they just allowed common
carriage, there were be far more than two companies to choose from).

I had forgetten it was a supreme court ruling, I had thought it was just an

If I remember correctly the crux of the arguement, was that telephone
companies wanted the cable companies to lease their lines like they had to,
as cable companies were begining to get in on providing internet service.
They argued since they had to do it, so should the cable companies, but the
cable companies were able to argue that they were not a telecommuncation
service, they were just providing bits of data.

Well most consumer groups and others who actually care about these types of
things knew this was bunkbut the boneheads who are in charge of the
supreme court bought the cable companies arguement...and what do we have? No
real competition and continued price hikes and the little guy getting
 screwed again...

In fact if I remember correctly, the cable companies argued that by
allowing their lines to be leased they would have to raise rates and
possibly go to tiered pricing which would be bad for consumers

I guess the only recouse any of us have is that the FCC and Congress gets
their heads out of their asses and adjust the laws accordingly and take
 control of the issue.

So I guess we should just bend over now, right

Re: [videoblogging] question: laptop for video editing

2009-04-03 Thread Richard Amirault
- Original Message -

The more important question is what program you want to use for
editing. If you need Final Cut Pro and can spend $1300 on it, you
need to get a Mac. If you just need basic editing or even medium-
featured editing, it doesn't really matter whether you have Mac or PC
 - you can use Sony Vegas on a PC ($50) and iMovie on a Mac (free).
(snip)
I've been using Macs for video for 10 years, and I prefer the
interface. But I've also use PCs a lot for work, and have done some
video using Vegas, and it's pretty good too - better in some ways than
iMovie, but not as good as the much more expensive Final Cut Pro if
you want to do lots of fancy stuff. So it's all about what you're
going to use it for and what you're comfortable with.

You are comparing apples to oranges. First, like Final Cut, there are
multiple versions of Sony's Vegas. The consumer version is Sony Vegas
Movie Studio .. but even that comes in, I believe, three different versions.
Then you have the professional version called Sony Vegas Pro. THAT program
lists for $550.00 US.

Vegas Pro can stand toe to toe with Final Cut Pro anyday. Yes, there are
things that one can do and the other can't .. but it works both ways. Each
is a professional level video editor.

Re: [videoblogging] How do you screen?

We haven't been watching much lately, but we used to watch a lot with iPod
on the TV.

Now we usually just hook the computer to the TV, and that's how we watch
most everything, because we don't have cable.

We use s-video for the video, and just plug the audio into the audio jack.

[videoblogging] Real Media captioned files

2009-02-25 Thread RICHARD
I have a client that has some archival Real Media files with captions that
appear below the video in Real Player.

They now want to re-encode the videos to post on Youtube, with open
subtitles/captions.

If I can get the Real Media caption file (SMIL .rt text file, from what I¹ve
read), can I use that file to superimpose subtitles/captions actually on the
video?

Is there any easy way to do this, or an application that can do this
automatically?

If I have to, I could cut and paste, cut and paste, each title, and
superimpose the titles in FCP, but I¹d rather not.

Thanks for any advice.

[videoblogging] HDV tapes

2009-02-19 Thread RICHARD
What are your experiences with mini HDV/DV tapes for recording HDV?

I recently bought a Canon XH A1s and I want to stick with one brand of tape
for use in this camera.

I¹ve been using Panasonic mini DV tape for years in my Panasonic SD
camcorder and have been completely satisfied with it. I haven¹t been able to
find a Panasonic brand specifically labeled for use with HDV. I have seen
Sony, Fuji, and others labeled for use with HDV.

Do you have a preference for a particular brand?

How about HDV mini versus DV mini tapes for recording HDV?

Thanks for any info.

Yes ... you need to calibrate both. There are devices you can buy that read
the colors off your computer screen and then adjust them to a standard. It
then saves that correction on your computer so that everytime you turn it on
it adjusts itself. This needs to be done periodically .. like at least once

Thank you all for your replys. What I was looking for was something like
what I have in
our Vinten tripod, a ball based head, that levels the head only. Adjusting
the tripod legs
always leaves me sideways when I pan, I hate that. But I see there aren´t
many options,
altough Manfrotto does seem the best option. For me, an horizon that is not
horizontal on
the frame (does this make sense?) is more disturbing than a squeeky or bouny
pan or tilt
movement. But maybe thats just me ;).
===

It won't be sideways when you pan if the tripod is level (that was the
point of adjusting one of the legs)

A suggestion: see if you can find a circular level. Some tripods have this
built in, but you can buy a general purpose one that is somewhat bigger than
a built-in one .. but will work for setting up the tripod. It's a round
device with two or three concentric rings and, of course, a small bubble of
air inside. It helps to level in two dimensions ... more like 360 degrees.
Unlike a conventional ruler level that is designed to level only in one
dimension.

I can easily pick a cheap tripod, actually I did just that from my sisters
 room, but my question
is: what cheap tripod would you recomend, that has vertical corection? The
 type of thing
found in expensice video tripods, is any cheap manufacturer doing that? I
 hate crooked
 horizons...

First, I'm not sure what you mean by vertical correction. At first I
thought you meant an extendable center column, but reading further I don't
think you meant that.

Second, there are *tons* of cheap tripods out there. How cheap is cheap?
AND, most importantly, for video especially, you don't want a cheap
tripod. They are crap and will give you headaches and poor performance
(jerky pans for one thing).

If your horizon is not level you can extend or retract one of the tripod
legs to correct for that.

Not cheap as in $50 but cheap in good tripod terms (about $175) I have
a Manfrotto set - head 701RC2 and legs 190XDB. I bought them from BH
about a year and a half ago. I like them a lot.

Unlike cheap tripods .. the Manfrotto / Bogen units are two piece units.
They sell the legs and then they sell the head Whether it is a still
photo head or a video head. So you can put a variety of heads on the same
legs. Yes, you can buy then together in one transaction .. but you'll have
to put them together when you receive them, because the head will not be
mounted on the legs.

I own three Manfortto tripods (and one monopod) Good stuff.

As suggested a double ender will work just fine. How low cost it is
depends on what your definition of cost is. You will need quality
recorders. A pair of Zoom H-2s will work great. Do not use anything like a
digital voice recorder from Olympus or Sony.

I'm not sure about the video aspect of this. Will you both need to see the

Re: [videoblogging] music.podshow.com video blog safe?

2008-10-01 Thread Richard (Show) Hall
Yes, it's Adam Curry's podshow.

He set this up for independent musicians, and podcasters.

Here are the terms of service
http://music.podshow.com/music/producerTerms.php

Basically, you can use the music on your podcast so long as you give
attribution to the musician and podshow.

It's dependent on the musicians uploading only music they have rights to
distribute.

I try to be careful about using copyrighted music (that is, I don't) and I
have always considered pod safe music fair game.

 I don't recall there being a limit with video.google.com.

I think that's true.

If you get a director's account at youtube, you can upload files over 100
 mb.

I think it was a Directors Account allowed you over 100 mb and longer than
10 min. No longer true. At one time it was, and any video longer than 10 min
uploaded at that time will still be watchable until removed (by the owner,
or YouTube) .. Those members who could upload longer than 10 min, as I
understand it, can still do so, but any new member, director account or not,
is limited to 10 min. (the file size is 1 gig I believe)

Is free small enough? Try using Windows MovieMaker before dropping a
 dime on other software.

Then hit up the free trial of Sony Vegas for 30 days.

Rather than try the full version of Vegas I would suggest the consumer
version .. Vegas Movie Studio (also available as a 'try-it-out' download)
It's a *lot* cheaper than the full version, and will do 95% of what the full
version can do (for most of what you are likely to need)

A mic jack without a headphone jack is an accident waiting to happen. Yes, a
headphone jack is better than no headphone jack .. but unless you can hear
what you are recording, or at the very minimum see a VU meter response of

[videoblogging] Re: Screen recording software for Windows XP/Vista

2008-09-03 Thread RICHARD
Thanks for all of your suggestions for screen recording software for Windows
XP.

FYI, the problem is not with recording PowerPoint presentations, but with
recording the small print on web page demonstrations. Since my client
records these events in DV, the small web text is unreadable.

I can screen record clearly on my Mac with iShowU, but I need a solution for
Windows XP. They don¹t support Macs on their network where some of the
tutorials are done.

I¹m going to try the less expensive/free solutions first and see if they are
satisfactory.

The free jing is very interesting.

[videoblogging] Screen recording software for Windows XP/Vista

For the Mac, I use iShowU, which is cheap and works really well.

I intend to boot into Windows XP on my MacBook Pro and use the Windows
equivalent screen recording software. My client doesn¹t support Macs on
their network and I need to record clear video to show web pages for
tutorials, etc. I¹ve tried using a video camera and the output from a
switcher, but neither is clear enough for my purposes. The video I captured
from iShowU is crystal clear and is exactly what they want. I just need
screen recording software for Windows so I can join their network and record
the screen.

The video will be edited in Final Cut Pro 6.

Another - possibly more interesting / innovative approach to great
documentary interview sound might be to record double system.

Video 'B-roll' - interesting shots of the subject in situ + separate audio
interview with small mp3 / wav recorder.

Great audio cause you can always easily keep the microphone close.

More interesting video than talking heads would ever-ever-ever give ya.

YES!! This is what I use (double system) when I record panels at science
fiction conventions. Yes, I have used wireless in the past ... but my
Edirol R-09 with a pair of Crown Sound Grabber 2 mics on the table works
great and is hardly noticable to both the audience and the panel members
(and the camera)

My latest video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxXMESMPrYM

A Zoom H-2 would work just as well and save you $100.00

PS I also have the Sennheiser EW 100 ENG2 wireless setup as well.

(cool!) ... So the check finally came yesterday .. I had the damn thing

I wanted some sort of external mic for the GL-2 such as a shotgun .. but ..
I went with the Rode Stereo Video Mic .. and, guess what, the price was
$249.00 with free shipping! All the reviews I've seen were very positive on
this mic, and I like that the outdoor wind-muff was included (the
dead-cat)

The SVM is not a shotgun type of mic, but it seems to be a major step up
from any internal mic. It *is* stereo, unlike many shotgun mics. Also, as I
understand it, the SVM actually has better cancellation of low freqs from
the back and side than many shotgun mics.

I should be here tomorrow :-))

[videoblogging] H264 encoded movies

So I finally persuaded a client to encode their web movies to .h264 instead
of Real Media.

I'm using Apple's Compressor to encode .h264 video from a FCP 6 project.
By default, Compressor uses the .mov extension when compressing to .h264

Will The new .h264 friendly version of Flash play a .mov file encoded as
.h264?
Or does it have to have a .mp4 or some other extension?

Will Windows play a .h264 encoded web video without Quicktime installed?

What is the best file extension/method for maximum compatibility with .h264
encoded web movies?
