[videoblogging] Video Content Provider Rights
I'm looking for feedback on this. As video content providers our material is taken by third parties and used for financial gain by that third party. The site you upload to may be a free site and you can elect to be there or not, but each site sells itself as the place to be and gives itself such importance as to come across as necessary to video content providers. That is the nature of the business. Yet, the content providers are not only rarely, fairly compensated, but are sometimes shown a complete lack of respect by those sites. They want what you have so they can make money, but because everyone and their brother has a video camera and will send video, they feel they don't need to give you any extra or special treatment just because you make professional content. They can arbitrarily remove your content and not explain or not even investigate any claims. Here we are providing content, not getting paid, or being paid very little and are at the mercy of some sites that just don't care. I know, I know, don't use those sites. But, if those sites are where your target audience is, then what? Do video content providers have rights? Do we have rights if a third party uses our material to bring in income? If our material brings them income are they obligated to recognize us? What do you think? Sheila
[videoblogging] Crackle and LiveVideo
Does anyone here know how to contact people at Crackle or LiveVideo? Over the weekend someone thought it would be cool to report our profile as having copyright infringement and/or porn. Most sites took the time to check it out and we didn't have a problem, but Crackle and LiveVideo obviously don't investigate. LiveVideo removed a bunch of videos as porn, one of which was a children's video and as far from porn as you can get, Crackle removed our entire profile. Neither give you a way to contact them, or they simply don't bother to reply. We get hit like that at least once a year. Someone feels the need to try and sabotage us online, but usually we are able to handle the damage. We had over 350 videos on Crackle. Very sad to lose them. Any suggestions? Thanks! Sheila

[videoblogging] Interesting things going on over at YT
I was checking out some videos on YouTube and noticed on one of the videos that there was a blank spot to the right of the video screen, within the video player, and it was letting me know that an ad could go there. An ad on the right side, not the lower third, which is what I'm used to. Could this be the reason for the new wide screens I wonder? I don't know, I'm just wondering. Now YT has a way to promote your videos or channel through a sort of AdWords-type arrangement. Interesting. Will try that out for sure. I really like the addition to Insight (YouTube analytics). I was checking out the Hot Spots feature and wondered what others thought about it? If you've not seen it, it tells you how your video did in comparison to others of the same length. I like seeing where people started dropping interest. It's a helpful tool. Seems like YT is gearing up for 2009 with some new and interesting things.

The medium is missing something like a TV Guide for Web video that magazine's owners and others are scrambling to become the industry standard. As a result, advertisers sometimes have trouble navigating the market, Mr. Scannell said. Similarly, the industry needs a reliable third-party arbiter of traffic analytics, something akin to Nielsen's ratings service for television. Not surprisingly, Nielsen and a plethora of other companies are striving to be that source, but an industry standard has not yet emerged. Then there is the living room problem. We need the TVs in the living rooms to be integrated with the Internet, said Ron Richards, the director of marketing and product management for Revision3, which calls itself a television network for the Internet generation. http://bit.ly/O5acB Many original series on network Web sites are simply marketing tools for television shows. And a look at a few current, more truly original Web series with television connections demonstrates that if you're not packaging Big Brother outtakes, it helps to have an independent revenue stream. Nielsen isn't covering these things yet. Jay -- http://jaydedman.com 917 371 6790 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I just hired an account exec who lives in Manhattan. I do think face-to-face networking makes a difference. And that makes the struggle even harder for those who aren't in LA or NY. We have our Head of Production in LA and she will go to events and meetings there, but we really needed to be in NYC. Once we started sending people out into the field to network we saw a dramatic increase in orders. Hi Milt! Statistics show that releasing a novel one chapter at a time does not harm sales when you finally bundle it to sell in full. In some cases it actually helps the sales. I was just on a panel called Digital Bundling for BEA (Book Expo America) and we discussed these topics specifically. I think selling a DVD of your accumulated material is good idea. Try it out and see how it goes! You can always make it for a limited time only in case it proves to be more trouble than it is worth. What might be interesting to try, and perhaps this is something I could bring up to the ADM (Association of Downloadable Media), is a list of quality content providers that are grouped according to target audience, genre and/or synopsis, then advertise those shows to ad agencies, video sites, out-of-home markets, etc. as package deals. Sell seasons, advertise for sponsors, etc. all in one area so people can go there and shop for shows. Or, perhaps there's something like that out there already and I don't know about it? For me, I would totally be up for paying for sponsorship or for a season of a good, quality show that has anything to do with books, comics, reading or literacy. I just don't know where to go to find those shows. But it would be great to have a new line up for my Reader's Entertainment TV site. [videoblogging] RME and ROI
My videos promo books. They're called Book Trailers and they are created to give you a visual flavor of the story. They aren't traditional commercials. They're meant to be fun. We push the video the month before it is released and then a push during the first week of sales. The first week of sales is what will determine where you place on a bestseller list. After that, we leave the video up for as long as the book is in print. Our videos continue to get hits years after their initial release. I know that TubeMogul just did a study on the shelf live of online video- http://www.tubemogul.com/research/index.php?r=7 But we've been doing some RD and the data has been interesting. Now I need to apply that somehow in significance to ROI. Residual Marketing Effect is what I'm calling promo longevity that results in purchases long after the initial campaign.(that might have been redundant...but hey...it's 3AM and I can't sleep...so this is what I do) For example, we have a video that is 2 years old that started getting a bunch of hits all of a sudden. We found that someone saw it, liked it, bought the book and then blogged about how great the book is. So we see this increase in views that are resulting in purchases. I want to write a paper on this to tie it into a sort of ROI long tail, if you will. My reasoning is that many of our larger clients are paying $15,000 for a single USA Today national ad and I want to use this information as part of my overall pitch to have them invest in online video instead. Hi Leesa and thank you. I did send an email to the paypal account associated with the material. Someone here asked if they had updated the material or added Alexa rankings and I went back and see that they did not update the sites that I can tell, but they did add the Alexa ratings. I'm sure that took time to do. I got some of the sites from Joe Whyte at Hybrid SEM, and I credited him and sent him the new list so that he could benefit as well. I'm all for sharing. I just don't think I should have been charged $10 for the list. lol Joe said he would categorize the list. I sent him an email asking where he is with that. Hopefully he'll have it done relatively soon. Sheila --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, leesarbarnes [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey Sheila, I'm not shocked that this has happened. [videoblogging] Re: Is Veoh going belly up or just going through a growth spurt?
I've left messages at the Veoh Networks corporate site, I've sent various email. I've still heard nothing. I just called them today though, so hopefully I will hear back this week. I'm a little concerned that copyright infringement lawsuits are going to harm Veoh. It's not like they're the only ones getting sued, but it seems like a significant suit. I'm not someone who is great with legal-eze but maybe someone here can take a look at this and know what's going on- http://news.justia.com/cases/featured/california/casdce/3:2007cv01568/253104/ It says that the docket report was last checked in Feb. 2008. Personally, if it were my business, the minute things started to appear bad, such as law suits and losing a lot of employees, I would beef up my customer service and make sure my core content providers, advertisers and partners were well taken care of. But, that's just me. Sheila They just raised another $30m - now valued at $125m - see http://news.google.com/news?q=veoh On the other hand investor Michael Eisner thinks the model sucks.. http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/6/eisner_to_veoh_but_when_do_i_get_paid_ He told Shapiro that the video aggregators, so adept at raising and spending money, are not handing enough back to the people who actually make the videos themselves. They're shooting themselves in the foot, he said. They are trying to elicit a fee to integrate on sites like Veoh but with a revenue split that makes it impossible for a content producer to get enough money to cover production. If I were running one of the distribution companies I would not look to make $2.50 but encourage the content creators to make it, he said. I'm not sure the distributors are thinking through where the content players have to come out -- instead of how to make a little money. --- WWWhatsup NYC http://pinstand.com - http://punkcast.com ---
[videoblogging] Sharing some good news
It's been a great week for my company and I wanted to share the good news! We were in The Wall Street Journal on Saturday and that has resulted in some great contacts! We also just found out that one of our original shows is under consideration for Transit TV (11 million views a week)while a different one is being considered by Lifetime TV online. Of course being under consideration doesn't always pan out, but it was really nice to hear people be enthusiastic about our shows! I'm finding more and more people interested in original shows, but I wonder if the actor's strike will create changes that harm online episodic content distribution? I don't expect to have to hire SAG actors to be in my shows, but adding new rules often results in mass confusion during the learning curve and that always gives me a headache. Thanks for letting me share! Have a great week! Sheila
[videoblogging] Re: Is Veoh going belly up or just going through a growth spurt?
Great point about the investing. I'm sure people wouldn't invest that kind of money without a very thorough look at Veoh and everything going on with the company. It does feel to me that Veoh is struggling, but from growth or trouble I couldn't say. I hope some of that $30 million goes toward customer service! ...it is interesting to see whether customer support holds up now that the honeymoon hype period for online video has passed. Brilliantly said! The race to win the best content and biggest advertisers seems to be leveling off a bit and people are looking more at pointed issues such as monetization and target marketing. That's my own take though. Priorities seem to be shifting with video content sites. I hope there's thoughtfulness invested in those priorities outside of where to get the biggest bang for the buck. I know that's important, but there are other things equally as important. Cheers! Sheila --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Steve Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well that court case looks old, and it was dismissed last November. So who knows, it could be an unpleasant mess behind the scenes, your experience may be typical or it may not, either way they have let you down and that sucks :( Medium-term I still would not be surprised if most of these comapnies are stuffed, and it is interesting to see whether customer support holds up now that the honeymoon hype period for online video has passed. [videoblogging] Re: Is Veoh going belly up or just going through a growth spurt?
I had not seen that article! Thank you for sharing it. That just confirms my own suspicions that Veoh is having some real problems. They appear to be having a true disconnect from their content providers and users. I can't help but wonder if they're self-sabotaging in their, seemingly, desperate bid to find a solid revenue stream? You can't court investors while pissing off content providers and site users...or can you? I guess only time will tell. [videoblogging] List of social media sites
I listed this a while back, but I found someone selling this same list online for $10. It's my exact same list, which is funny since I paid $10 just to find out it was my list being sold. I don't really care that someone is selling the list, but I thought I would mention that you can get it for free here- http://dc15.4shared.com/download/41626459/f9978ca7/SocialMediaList_Generic.doc It's a list of over 400 sites that I put together. I checked each site at the time I uploaded this list and they all worked. Hard to say if they all still work since so many sites fail anymore. I am updating the list at the end of the year and should have about 500 sites listed by then. I will always make the list available to this group. I get a lot of great feedback and help from people here and I want to be able to offer something in return. And if you want to sell it for $10 I don't care, but do be kind enough to credit me for it since I put a lot of hours into the creation of the list. Cheers! Sheila
[videoblogging] Copyright and Brightcove
I wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar experience with Brightcove or any other hosting site. A Brightcove rep contacted me to say they would be pulling down one of my videos due to copyright infringement. Since I legally license or create everything I use, I knew there was a mistake. He said that Brightcove now hires a third party auditor to review user content for copyright violations and terms of service violations. Their third party auditor identified the music in my video as copyrighted material. I had 5 days to respond. I responded by sending my official license for the copyright of the song, which I paid for and the receipt for. They said they couldn't take my receipt or the copy of the license given to me when I purchased the license for the use of the song. So I had to involve the company I purchased the music from. That company went through the trouble of verifying the license to Brightcove. Then Brightcove said that's not good enough. Now I have to have the copyright holder, the person who created the music, contact them. And, that person had to use the official Brightcove paperwork, fill it out, send it in, or my video would be taken down. I don't know about any of you, but hunting down the musician, getting him/her/them to fill out an official form for you and submit it seems a bit overkill to me. I understand the copyright issue. I do. But, what other difficulties will this kind of strict auditing and process cause content creators? Next will it be my stock footage and I'll have to find the camera operator? Do you see this as the future of creating original content? Because this makes it terribly hard on the individuals or small companies. Or maybe I'm just a big whiny, baby and everyone else deals with this as a standard part of doing business? Sheila

I have a whole online tv site that uses the Veoh platform (http://www.readersentertainment.tv). I love how easy it is to use the Veoh platform, but they've been slow to respond to emails and issues. That's my personal experience, I have no idea if anyone else is having this experience. My rep there isn't there anymore so perhaps that's why I'm having problems getting emails returned. Hello Duncan! Not seeing the video I can really only say that there are fair use laws and that getting a model release form is really not necessary in every case, according to how the footage is used, etc. If you recorded the actual conversation then I would take it down. If you just see the person then I would not. But, that's just me. If this convention you attended required people to register you might check what your registration said. More and more conventions are putting in clauses within the registration form telling people there will be filming and when people register they are giving their permission to be filmed. [videoblogging] Re: talkin' bout money
This is an excellent idea that I wish I had thought of! lol There are so many great points to doing this I just don't see how it couldn't work if you can just get your foot in the door somewhere. I'm not sure what kind of content you have, but may I suggest out-of-home content providing? You could offer your content to syndicate off line using this venue. You could send it to doctor's offices, health clubs, etc. Once established, you could then write a proposal showing that your content is fit for public consumption in professional venues already. This would put you in a better position for acceptance by large corporations. Out-of-home venues for content syndication is a moderately untapped market. So, right now, it's not so hard to get into. My content plays in 5 major cities, 10 million impressions per video per week. The company syndicating my content does not charge me to play the content on their platform and I don't charge them to show my professionally made content that happens to be pretty target-specific to their audience. And though I'm not getting paid for it at this point, it sets me up to propose to other companies that they pay for the content because I can prove it is desirable. Plus, the orders we get to make video have skyrocketed because of this new off line arrangement. Sheila --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Roxanne Darling [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have been noodling on an idea for over a year of licensing our content to companies for use on the intranet. Most people tell us they watch to reduce stress and get my head back on square while at the office. Lots of companies block YT and other internet sites, and actually want to drive people to the intranet for important company-related messages. HR materials to help people be healthier are so dated. Having modern, clean content that is is health-oriented, or comedy (laughter is healing - science has proven that), informational - well it just seems to me a natural fit. Yes the co could get it for free online, but that means opening up a port and by licensing it for internal use, they can get a custom feed, better quality, timed episode releases, and then there are all sorts of possibilities for integrating specific content ideas and internal messaging too. I've not yet been able to sell this to a company - approached Intel last year but they responded We've never done anything like this before. Which of course, I knew. So it will take a very forward-thinking company. As a former health coach. I would even bet that watching Beach Walks daily for a few months could lower people's blood pressure - and now we are talking serious savings in the health care costs department. I'd love any ideas you folks may have on this. Or leads to HR managers. Though I really am heading back to billables and will check in later today. That really is a very interesting model. I would be so interested in how it goes for him. We get so many requests from other sites, both online and off, to utilize our videos, that this may, at some point, be an option for us. Sites like Hulu give you the same stuff you can see on tv and though popular right now, at some point people are going to look around and ask where the new stuff is. At some point I hope to see online viewers demand to have something different than what they can get on TV. Right now the technology is so cool people flock to it. Ooooh...I can see the same thing on my computer that I can on my TV. That's s cool! If content providers are smart they'll offer deleted scenes or something online so people get something new if they watch online. Or, they will turn to video providers such as ourselves who cater specifically to online audiences. I love the idea of sending computer content to tv screens. Of course, I would. [videoblogging] Video Performance Rating System
I'm sure I'm not nearly as technically savvy as the majority of people here. And I only have 2-3 years of doing online marketing research or video distribution research. So, I would welcome any feedback or suggestions on this idea of having a performance rating system. I really need a useable rating system that would honestly reflect video performance. Here's what I got so far though. Proposed Rating System--- Video View =1 point per view Video Comment = You get 2 points because there is a comment. Then you get 1 point for every word written. Video Rating= 1 point. It does NOT matter if they rated it good or bad, you still get the point. Video Download = 5 points per download. This applies to downloading to desktop, iPod or similar device, mobile phone, PDA, etc. Video Link= 2 points per link. This is the URL only. Video Embed = 5 points per video embed. If someone puts your entire video on display on their site you get 5 points. Don't forget to read any comments from blogs about your video because those count as video comments! Video Mash-up = 5 points. It doesn't matter if the mash up is flattering or not. Someone went to a lot of trouble to create something from your video. Video News Sites = 3 points if they simply send your video to a site such as Digg or Technorati, 5 points if they comment or write an article along with the posted video. Video Media Pick Up = 5 points if the media pick up your video and write about it. This includes industry news, local, regional or national news. Video Specialty Site Pick Up = If you have an industry site or specialty site request your video to display that gets 10 points. For example, Borders or BNN are industry sites. They must REQUEST it or pick it up themselves to display, you cannot offer it to them. These are NON-news sites. If you offer them the video and they take it you get half points, 5 points if you offer it as opposed to 10 points if they request it or take it themselves.

I started using Ning last year so that I could interact with the people who watch my videos in a variety of ways. Then, I set up a private account on ning just for my employees and partners. I have 12 production partners and 11 staff members scattered from NYC to LA and we utilize our private ning network to share work, processes, etc. It is the best communication tool I've found. I had heard of Ning as far back as last summer, I think, but it never struck me as anything worth paying attention to. MAN was I wrong! Ian strongly commended it to me and I started playing around with it. I LOVE Ning. I can recommend it to people here enough. I have spent h-o-u-r-s working out the perfect word press set up, and Ning looks better than anything I ever did in word press and I am able to do so in a fraction of the time. In a six degree of seperation thing, I even think I went to High School with Ning's CEO. Strange. Anyway - thank you VERY much. You really made my day. Please sign up and become a member. [videoblogging] Brightcove
Is anyone here using Brightcove as a platform? I see that TubeMogul isn't distributing to them any more. I tried to find out the pricing to use thier platform and it was so confusing that even the rep was confused. My understanding, and please correct me if I'm wrong, is that you don't know what you're going to pay each month because it is all measured by bandwidth use. My bill could be quite low if I'm not getting a lot of hits, but if something becomes popular I could have a huge bill that I, perhaps, was unprepared for. I can still access the dashboard from Brightcove. I used to have a free account, but of course they stopped offering free accounts. Veoh and Blip are not complicated like this. Someone please, un-confuse me! If you're a Brightcove guru I would love to be able to understand what's going on over there right now. Sheila
[videoblogging] Re: Other Tube Mogul-like Options
Hi Tim, I'm someone who pays for the TubeMogul service because I like the bells and whistles they offer. I started out with a free account because, like you, I thought it was too good to be true. After a time working with the system I then signed up for one of the paid accounts and feel that I definitely get my money's worth for the service. Though any business can meet with an unexpected end, I always do a thorough check before I invest in time or money. This particular business is growing at a rate of speed that I am comfortable with. Too fast and services suffer, too slow and I'm not growing my own business by using the service. That's just my 2 cents. I think I know what you're saying with the RSS feed issue. The only RSS feeds that are affected with my TubeMogul service are the ones I put into place. I'm sure that if there was a problem with an unwanted destination via RSS feed, that you could simply stop using TubeMogul. Try Hey!Spread or one of the software programs. You have to pay a nominal fee, but it's not a lot. I love combining my RSS feeds and TubeMogul. My videos are automatically uploaded to about 20-25 sites via my TubeMogul upload because of my RSS feeds via Revver and Blip. Sheila --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Tim Street [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey Andrew, I'm curious about this. I think Tube Mogul is a great tool and a great service run by great people but... 1. What happens if services like these start charging money? Is this a drug dealer business model? 2. What happens if RSS feeds are created that you don't control and/or your content becomes more popular on an RSS feed that you don't control? I'm not saying don't use these services, I asking what are all the possible ramifications because these free services are incredible and my Grandpa told me to watch out for anything that was too good to be true. I use the analytics that TubeMogul provides to see how well my video is doing on a particular site. Some sites are better for certain topics than others. We have a distriubtion staff and 2 people who are our personality on each site we distribute to. We are very active, because you have to be in order for it to be social media as opposed to just a delivery platform. One thing you might consider is Social Poster. We have been using it for about a month now with great success. We have seen a definate increase in video views since using Social Poster. You can check it out here- www.socialposter.com We were only able to get it to work by using Firefox though. [videoblogging] My TubeMogul Experience
I don't work for TubeMogul and I do use HeySpread, Video Uploaded, Video Post Robot, Social Poster and any other syndication platforms I can find (love Blip.tv!). TubeMogul works well for me because of all the features. We use the Business Pro level in order to take advantage of extra features and analytics. But, the free account is fine for anyone not interested in those features. Some of the things to be aware of is that not all of sites they distribute to are also able to give you analytics. For example, I can get demographic and geogrpahic information but only from YouTube and Veoh. In order to get Veoh analytics I have to go through TubeMogul to set up my players and videos. We own an online tv platform that utilizes Veoh so that's going to be a lot of work for us to change things over just to get those analytics. There are still some growing pains there. I have a scientific background and can usually tell at a glance when their stats are off. But, for the most part, I find their data to be reliable. I also track my competition through TubeMogul which is a great benefit to me. And I can track multiple campaigns. TubeMogul's backend engineering into each of the sites they distribute to is not created equal. Some sites allow TubeMogul full access to viewer information, some don't allow that. In all fairness, it is a new company and it is definitely more advanced than any other of its kind that I have found.

I have a preference to TubeMogul as well. I see they just added Viddler. And though I've not seen anything official, I have a hunch they will add imeem. I've seen that site mentioned on the TM site lately. They added Sclipo, but Sclipo is so niche. If you haven't seen TubeMogul's blog you might want to check that out. Very good information there. [videoblogging] Re: Crossposting Services: blip.tv HeySpread
I have purchased the Video Post Robot and Upload Video Pro. I've tried out the Upload Video Pro and though it is glitchy and takes some getting used to, it was worth the price I paid, which was $37. I would not pay more than $100 for this program though. I am currently working with the Video Post Robot and should be able to give you some feedback on that this week. I do reviews for online distribution and am always happy to share my findings. I just did one on Blip.tv. I like Hey!Spread for the cost effectiveness and I really like getting the URLs emailed to me. I highly recommend TubeMogul. You can get the free Personal account and it still gives you some tracking. I use a more advanced account and feel it is worth what I pay for that. If you are using TubeMogul or a similar distribution company I recommend taking a close look at the sites they offer. Go to each site and see what syndication they have available and either sign up or apply for further syndication. Definately take advantage of any of the sites that have great RSS feeds. Not all RSS feeds work the same, whether they're suppose to or not. I have a preference for Blip and Revver. Keep in mind though that Revver is in finacial straights so you may not want to depend on RSS feeds from them unless they get bought out. As a side note: VMIX is going to stop taking video so those of you auto-distributing to that site should start seeing rejections coming in. My company uses auto-distribution services and we can distribute to well over 100 sites by going to a total of 3 auto-distribution sites to upload our video. That does include book marking sites though. Total time for 1 staff member to distribute to 100 sites- 1 to 2 hours. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Patrick Delongchamp [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I can't imagine they get many sales with the Order Now button on page 12.
