[videoblogging] Re: The Shallow Nature of Video Blogging

2006-06-05 Thread gmjoyce_y

I don't know why anyone should feel inferior because their video blog
is—heaven forbid!—entertaining.

I just got this comment a couple of days ago:

Great stuff ... Ya got me hooked!

I'm a big fan, I check for the new episode every day.

So should I feel guilty for being so shallow that I'm thrilled
someone appreciates my hard work?

[videoblogging] Working Stiff - new indie movie vlog/cast

2006-05-25 Thread gmjoyce_y

Hi,

People on this group have asked about indie filmmakers and their work
for a while now. After a lot of prepping and some generous technical
help from people in this group, I'm ready to start.

I'm showing my independent movie, Working Stiff, a few minutes each
weekday, online. It's feature-length, so showing it should last about
a month. There are two venues for the movie: I'm using Brightcove for
one. I'm sure some people here know about these guys. Steve Garfield
interviewed Jeremy Allaire a while ago. Brightcove has a nifty
interface and right now the service is free. They use Flash. (I did
two pass conversion and it looks really good.) It's a great service
and their support has been first-rate.

I'm also doing a downloadable QT/iPod version.

I may do a writer-director's vlog in the future where I blog about
the experience of making the movie (heaven and hell, in unequal
measures) what to do, what NOT to do, what I wish I knew before I
started, that sort of thing. Depends if people are interested and if
I can find the time.

Anyway, please feel free to leave comments at the blog—-like I have
to prompt THIS group-- ;-)

Hope you like it.

QT/download blog is at

[videoblogging] Help with Wordpress background/sidebar glitch?

2006-05-23 Thread gmjoyce_y

Can any Wordpress experts out there help with a problem?

I'm using the Kubrick header, which I've modified a bit on my own. All
I did was update a post by selecting all the text and making it left-
justified and when the site updated, the whole whole background turned
the color of my border and the sidebar was pushed to the bottom of the
page.

I assume the answer lies in adjusting one of the style sheets but I'm
by no means an expert on Wordpress. Any advice?

[videoblogging] Full window alternative to Freevlog popup maker?

I know Michael Verdi and others solved the active-x/unprogressive
download problem with their popup maker (yay Freevlog), but is there a
version that opens up in a new full-sized window rather than a sized
popup? I'd just like to have the option of either a popup or
full-sized window.

[videoblogging] Re: Full window alternative to Freevlog popup maker?

2006-05-13 Thread gmjoyce_y

Sorry, I should have been clearer.

I want to avoid displaying the active-x box that opens in Internet
Explorer when I post a video.

And I want the QuickTime movie to start playing as soon as it
can--while it is still downloading--rather than delaying until it is
fully downloaded before it plays.

The Freevlog popup maker does that very well for non-programmers like
myself. But the movie opens up in a popup window that sits in the
corner of the currrent window. I would like to open up a new,
full-sized window entirely.

[videoblogging] Re: Full window alternative to Freevlog popup maker?

2006-05-13 Thread gmjoyce_y

No, I'm trying to create a website/blog and I want to add my videos to
it. When people come to my site and click on my videos, I want the
videos to:

1.) start playing before they have downloaded fully.
2.) play without site visitor having to click on that box that says
Click to run an Active X control on this webpage. Verdi describes
the problem in his tutorial.
3.) play in a completely new window at full size, not a popup.

Freevlog is fine as far as I know.

And BTW I do have Firefox, but 70% of the rest of the country, people
whom I hope will visit my website, will be using IE.

[videoblogging] Re: Best Overal Digital Video Format

Regarding 3ivx, does anyone know if you can't do quick start/fast
streaming if you're doing a double-pass using 3ivx? I've tried it a
couple of times now and it doesn't fast-start. My single pass, lower

Is there a procedural trick I'm missing? It's not because of the

[videoblogging] Are you still using 3ivx withQuickTime?

2006-03-27 Thread gmjoyce_y
Which codec are you all using when creating Quicktime movies for the
web? I know 3ivx used to be popular but has it been supplanted by
H.264?

I'm looking for a high quality picture and a codec/format most computer
users can play easily. (Aren't we all? ;-))

Oh, and do I have to BUY 3ivx to use it with QTPro?

Thanks.

2006-03-27 Thread gmjoyce_y
Thanks for the responses, Michael and Pete.

I wonder, if you convert the original DV file to square pixels, will
that fix the squishing problem on the iPod?

I'm still using 3ivx for a couple of reasons. As Pete mentioned that
H.264doesn't work well with older machines - this is very true. Also
 if you want
to make an iPod compatible file and use H.264 the only way to do it
is with
QuickTime's save for iPod feature which will squish your video if
you are
starting with DV footage. Apple recently did something that makes
the old
workaround for creating an mp4 file with H.264 not work anymore
(you can
still make the files but they will no longer transfer to the iPod).
So for
iPod compatiblility that leaves Apples's mpeg4 or 3ivx and 3ivx is
much
 better quality.
3ivx costs $20 (though there is nothing to prevent you from using
it without
paying). You don't need QT Pro to use it. If you're on a PC and
want iPod
compatible files you'll also need access to the AAC audio codec
which you
can only get via QuickTime Pro.

2006-03-24 Thread gmjoyce_y
Thanks for the input. I'm surprised to hear that at least some of you
aren't so hot on the current video iPod. It's sold millions and I
think Robert Scoble of Microsoft and On10.net even said they were
using QT as a format because of all the video iPods out there.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but, as I said, it's interesting.

So it's best not to make your buying decisions on these rumors. I
mean if you want to wait until june to see if Apple comes out with
something new that probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

One more thing: the iPods seem to keep more value than the average
consumer product. I was able to sell my year old 4th gen ipod for
$200 on ebay which made it posible to buy my current $300 iPod

[videoblogging] Re: Google Video Downloader

2006-01-18 Thread gmjoyce_y
Bill,

I had been trying to figure out how to do MPEG4 with MP3 audio for a
looong time, until I learned of this statemment on Google video:

Please keep in mind that we also support other digital formats such
as QuickTime, or Windows Media.

Here's the full link:
http://video.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=26562

So I decided to use Windows Media Encoder, which I found does a very
nice job and was easy to use.

Now the problem is that Google is not taking any more videos for its
pay-to-download store, which is what some of us indie filmmakers have
been waiting for.

Anywone know when--or if--they're starting that up again?

Now this has come up before, if one wants to submit video to google
you have to convert your vid into one of their prefered formats. If
you are a Mac user the easiest would be to submit a MOV file. But the
problem is that they want your audio to be encoded as MP3. At first I
thought that this wouldn't be a problem since Quicktime supports this.
Well I was wrong. Quicktime no longer supports MP3 audio encoding. So
I looked around for a solution. I discovered a LAME encoder
 (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22571) for
QuickTime so I thought, great! this should work. I followed the
instructions by installing the plugin in QuickTime and the framework
in the correct place and no luck. Still no MP3 export support. Anyone
else have this issue? Or has anyone found another solution?

[videoblogging] Re: Copyrights and the artist's right to control their work

Very good post, Richard. Nicely balanced.

I know you're not a lawyer but can you (or anyone else who wants to
take a crack at it) tell me if I've got this right?

Saturday Night Live or The Daily Show can show clips from TV shows
because they're commending on or parodying the content of those clips.
So comment or satire makes these copyrighted clips fair game, is that
right?

And if SNL and Jon Stewart can do it, can't vloggers do likewise?

Thanks,

Andreas pointed to other posts on the legalities and how he'd
recommend that all videobloggers get educated on how rights
management works. Absolutely. Learn what it is, and what it means for
  you.

What hasn't been mentioned this time around, is why copyrights exist,
  apart from the money.

Don't assume that by using a work, you are promoting or advertising
that work. Copyright is not about making money, it is about retaining
control over your work, and having the legal right to make decisions
on where and how your work is used.

What one person thinks is a promotion of a work, the original artist
may see as slander, not befitting of the work, or against the
principles of the artist, such as being used in a porn video
podcast for example. This is why copyrights typically require you to
get permission from the owner, although there are limited exceptions
through the fair use provisions of the copyright act, which was
created to allow educational, parody or reference (news reporting for
  example) use.

Copyrights protect our culture, and they do that by allowing artists
to take control of their work. This also allows them to charge money
for the use of their work, in effect sponsoring them to create even
more work, and subsequently progressing our culture even further.

Unfortunately however, the system has become abused [RIAA/MPAA rant
here], but people like Lawrence Lessig and Creative Commons are
trying to fix it. You should also visit their site, and read about
what they're trying to do to protect culture and your rights.
  http://creativecommons.org/

Rights are good for you. My videoblog works are all Creative Commons,
attribution non-commercial sharealike. I have the right to allow you
to do whetever you like with my stuff, so long as you credit me as
the creator, share your works with the same allowances, and don't
make money off using it. I like having that right.

[videoblogging] Re: How to format .avi files for Google video?

2006-01-08 Thread gmjoyce_y
So what's the solution? Use AAC and hope Google accepts it?

Jim Vinson suggested Divx, because they are teaming up with Google,
but I can't find any official word from Google yet that you can upload
Divx-formatted files. Maybe Google plans to take your video and
encode it with Divx themselves?

BTW, I downloaded the Divx encoder free trial, did a simple
drag-and-drop of my .avi file onto the Divx converter -- no messing
with dozens of settings, no arcane language -- and the result was
really, REALLY good. High quality in a small file size.

If Divx were as ubiquitous as WMV or QT, things would be much easier

[videoblogging] Re: help with poor contrast on iPod version of video

2005-12-27 Thread gmjoyce_y
Brand new QT Pro, just bought it last night. 7.0.3. And I did a simple
export to Movie to iPod, which is H.264.

--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Verdi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

What codec are you using? What version of QT do you have? 7.0.what?
I noticed right away that h.264 gave a noticeably lower contrast
image. Though Apple seems to have fixed that issue with QT 7.0.3. I
don't have that problem with h.264 any more.

I don't have an iPod myself to test it on so I'm wondering if the iPod
compensates somehow. I'm on Windows XP, but, as I said, the contrast
for all the .mov files (non-iPod compression) is fine.

  Anyone have a solution? Thanks.

[videoblogging] WordPress recommending Yahoo hosting?

2005-12-21 Thread gmjoyce_y
I see on the WordPress site that they are now listing Yahoo on their
recommended hosts page: http://wordpress.org/hosting/

The prices and bandwidth Yahoo are offering certainly look like good
deals.

Is anyone here using Yahoo to host their video? Comments? Criticisms?

[videoblogging] how to read and compress .VOB files?

2005-12-09 Thread gmjoyce_y
Does anyone know how to convert VOB files to a format I can read and
then compress? I was able to copy the files off the DVD and onto my
hard drive so I don't have to decrypt them (and it's a movie I made so
I'm not violating copyright), but now I'm stuck.

I just want to take the movie off the DVD and compress it into
something smaller, to around 500 - 700 MB. Then I want to put clips
from the movie up on the Web. But Premiere won't read the VOB files. I
tried http://jmoney.byethost15.com/PARTS%202%20and%203/PART2.htm but
no luck. Dr. Divx is no longer available.

Thanks!

[videoblogging] feasible to charge small fee for indie movie download?

2005-11-16 Thread gmjoyce_y
I want to make my feature-length indie movie available for download
for a small fee, say a dollar or two. (On the side, I'm also thinking
about vlogging about the movie, its production, offer scenes, etc.) The
problem is, I don't know if it's even feasible to offer a download for
that little money or if it would be eaten up by bandwidth costs and fees
and end up costing me money.

I see Prodigem is making it possible to charge a fee for downloads.
Does anyone have experience with them? Are there any other places like
this?

I know DivX is a possible route, but I think my no-name movie would
get lost in the crowd...

Any suggestions? Names of hosting companies that would do this sort of
thing?

Thanks,

Greg

[videoblogging] Re: Vlog programming models - shows? (was: Aggregator based...)

2005-10-21 Thread gmjoyce_y
I'd love to get your opinions about something I've been planning that
ties right into this idea.

I've got a full-length movie I made called Working Stiff
(http://www.workingstiff.org) that I was thinking of putting up on the
Web someday so people could download it for a small fee, say a dollar
or two.

This episodic storytelling idea got me thinking, though. Let me ask
you: If I were to cut the movie up into 20, or 30 pieces (maybe one
scene at a time) and release one piece every day or every week:

a) would I kiss forever any hope of distributing it online for that
small fee I talked about?

b) would I lose control of the movie or would the exposure be worth
the risk of essentially giving it away?

Would very much like to hear your opinions.

Sincerely,

Greg

2005-10-21 Thread gmjoyce_y
Unfortunately, I already sold the DVD rights (a miniscule deal, equal
to just a tiny percentage of what the movie cost) so I can't sell any
DVDs. Plus the DVD distribution company is more than a year behind on
releasing it. Two reasons I've been thinking about releasing it online.

Thanks for your input, Adam.

I know I'd probably do that if it was something I was interested in.

And they're good ideas at that. Thanks, Pete.

I agree it would be too much work for someone to stich all the pieces
together. I didn't think about just putting it on a web page... I also
figured if I went the serial route, the pieces would be less quality:
small size, maybe 320 x 240 and less than 30 fps. If people wanted it,
I could make the whole thing available in a higher quality format
online -- once I figure out all
the codec compression and hosting/bandwidth/RSS feed/yada yada geek
stuff. (Which still is pretty confusing, by the way, for non techies
such as myself.)

Thanks for your feedback, Pete. Definitely something for me to think
about.

 You have so many options...

Release one piece per week or per day, either just on a web page, or
via
RSS. You could make it available only during that week/day. Put in
opening and closing scenes with the url, your info, etc... even if
someone gets all pieces, it would be some work to stitch together into
one piece, also don't put out the highest quality. All these things
might help you get exposure, and create a demand for the full,
 higher-quality piece...

 Just an idea...

[videoblogging] Re: Archive.org, Fair Use Doctrine

2005-10-11 Thread gmjoyce_y
Thanks for your .02 Nerissa.

I don't know why it seems that use is okay except when it's commercial
use, though. (Although I do understand the practicality of the
argument: most copyright owners will choose not to waste their time
going after some poor artist even though they have the legal right to
do so.) But when John Stewart on the Daily Show, to use just one
example, shows a news clip then comments on it, how is that allowed?
The Comedy Network is commercial enterprise. Essentially they use
copyrighted material in their show and the show makes money from the
advertising they sell.

Are the rules different for a network or do they somehow pay to use
the clips they use as material for their show?

Anyone know?

G.

Parody and Education uses are considerd fair uses. But fair use is
an interpretation thang

You say parody and they say copyright infringement.
You say education and they say commercialism.

So you're always taking a risk, but in general, if you are not
selling your stuff or making money in ohter way from your website
where copyright material is located AND you're educating or
parodying... you're probably not going to get hit with a lawsuit. But
on the other hand, content holders and the law are continaully moving
in the direction of interpretation of posting on web means
broadcasting. And re-broadcasting copyrighted material without
permission is not allowed.

So, it really boils down to--- do you feel comfortable doing it and
then making changes if one objects in later months or years down the road.
