[videoblogging] Re: Thoughts on Google and Video

2010-06-05 Thread pageflex2001
Thanks Julian!

I think it was Bill Gates who first envisioned the idea of web-connected TV,
writing about it in his book The Road Ahead. He predicted that people will be
able to chat with TV show hosts through their connected TV's. Microsoft went
ahead and implemented WebTV back in 1998 or so. However, it was too early for
an average consumer to catch on, and plus high speed internet wasn't there yet.
The project flopped.

As time goes by, more and more I realize that coming up with the idea first
isn't as important as executing it when the time is right. Looks like Google
feels that pulse now deciding to give it a whirl with Google TV. This will be
great for independent show creators who make their episodic shows for the
online audience. Roku had a chance to make their platform universal like that,
bringing both the creators and the viewers. But I guess it would be harder for
them to compete in this arena now that Google TV is coming to town. Roku's
approach to creating an online show isn't user-friendly for the show creators,
making them hire programmers or tech gurus to get the show on the air.

Sincerely,

Renat Zarbailov of Innomind.org

[videoblogging] Re: external hard drives for editing?

2010-04-16 Thread pageflex2001
If you want portability of editing on a laptop I'd suggest avoiding external
hard drives altogether. Nowadays laptop hard drives are pretty big allowing
videographers to work on the road. Of course depends on the scope of your
projects, if they are not that huge, go with the laptop drive edit. Possibility
of losing data because you accidentally moved the laptop pulling the USB cable
of the external hard drive is much greater compared if it was hooked to a
static workstation.

A bit off topic;

Has anyone used this mobile monster?

While the email talks about Free versus Premium paid networks, Ning actually
has a variety of different premium upgrades. Currently, Ning's premium

We had some long discussions several years ago when videobloggers started
using Ning to make communities to complement their videoblog. (example

if it was smart to invest so much time archiving and building a community on

When we did the http://semanal.org/ project in 2008...I know we debated
between using Ning or hack Wordpress for this group project. Glad we decided
 to hack.

I think useful services are smart to charge. I know I pay a yearly fee to

that seems worth a fee. But I feel it's really shady when services start
free...suck you in...then either force you to pay or dump you.

Hello gang,

I invite you to discuss the idea of creating an international video pool
for filmmakers around the world.

Here is the proposal http://www.innomind.org/?p=722 of the idea.

Also, you can vote for this idea on DropBox's feature voting here
https://www.dropbox.com/votebox/1202/video-pool-footage-repository-for-\

[videoblogging] Re: Microphone hiss, need advice...

2010-02-14 Thread pageflex2001
That's true, there was some room radiator hiss, but beyond that the mike still
has a hiss, trust me. If I were to do a recording comparison test between the
635A(B) and my Zoom H2 or Rode NT1-A the results will clearly show that the
635A(B) has a hiss. So the fact that there is a hiss from this mike is not
debatable.

My question is if there's anybody who can recommend a unidirectional mike that
comes closest to the crystal-clear sound of either Zoom H2 or Rode NT1-A.

Any help is truly appreciated!

Thanks

You're welcome Carlos,

If you are in NYC, I suggest you pay a visit to Sam Ash store in Times Square.
I had an XLR to 1/8 cable custom-made there using the highest quality cabling
and plug. They solder the whole thing in front of you to your own cable length
spects. One caveat though, when they first soldered it I discovered that the
mike started playing only one channel (either left or right, i forget). So I
went back and asked to to wire the cable so that both channels go into the
camcorder. After some experimenting we achieved it.

I have two of the Electro Voice 635a mics and they are very lasting.

Now my question is; Isn't the RE50B omnidirectional - meaning it will not
isolate the unwanted background street noise. Also what's the difference
between the RE50B and the RE50N/D-B. The Electrovoice site says that the
RE50N/D-B adds high-output Neodymium capsule magnet. What does that do?

I'm curious what benefits brings upgrading from my 635a to RE50N/D-B.

The bhp link for the XLR-1/8 adapter cable would work for the physical
connection but don't I also need to supply power for the Mic?

As someone else mentioned you only need power for a condenser mic that does
not have an internal battery option.

Ideally I would just like a handheld mic that plugs directly into my
Panasonic TM300 that provides acceptable sound

There are many dynamic mics that will work. There is a class of dynamic
mic called eng (for Electronic News Gathering) that are especially well
suited for this type of application.

 Some of these include:

 Electro Voice RE-50
Shure VP-64 (this is the one I use)
Electro Voice 635a (note: the RE-50 is basically the 635 *inside* a special
 housing to minimize handling noise)

I'm happy with my VP-64 but if I would buy another mic I would get the
 RE-50.

Yes it is omnidirectional ... but so is the 635a. Just because it is
omnidirectional does not mean it will capture all the unwanted background
street noise. Sensitivity is also an issue. When your mouth is a few inches
away from the mic it and the background noise is both much lower in volume
and much farther away .. you will hear mostly your voice.

Remember, the RE50 is can be seen daily on TV someplace in the country being
used by on-the-street newscasters. If it wasn't good TV newcasters wouldn't
 be using it.

It gives the mic a higher output (more signal)

Well, since the RE50 is nothing but a 635 inside .. you get a more
professional looking housing that reduces handling noise more than you have
now ... you get the Neodymium magnet for higher output (but you *can* get
the 635 with the same option if you want)

Richard,

BH used to be the best when it came to customer service. I live in NYC and my
last trip to the physical store location yielded in losing trust in this store.
I even asked for the manager and he never came to hear my concerns, they sent a
security guard to tackle the issue.
And you know what was the issue? They did not let me into the store because I
had my folding bike (Strida) with me. A week or so prior they did let me in
with this same bike as long as I had it checked in into the bag check room.

So sharing my experience with this community that BH has become a horrible
place to spend your hard-earned money I think is beneficial to everyone here.
After all, going to another retailer when shopping online is only a click away.

I am not in any way promoting Sweetwater, far from it, but they had a live
person call me on the phone as soon as I placed an order to make sure my
camcorder will be compatible with this wireless mike system. After the sale I
had a question and I called them back and the rep was very kind to walk me
through the process.

This is what customer service should be like.

I say, boycott BH until they change their way of treating their customers.

Bought it at sweetwater.com, don't ever shop at bh by the way!

I have a consumer Sony HDR-XR520V camcorder which has a mini mike jack. It's
got an sony active-shoe approach to attaching accessories to it, with a
slide-out cover. So what I did is I snapped that cover out, it sits on metal
rails, and screwed in a regular flash shoe taken from an old still camera on
top of that cover. I then grazy-glued that cover back to the spot where it
should be when closed. Now the Sennheiser receiver slides into that shoe
perfectly.

I haven't had any real interviews as of yet with this wireless system yet, but
hoping soonish..

awesome this open source video player is. You can throw any video into

We got a glimpse of their video editor the Open Video Conference this
summer, but I always questioned if they would finish it. The great
news is that they'll probably port it to mac and PCso it wont just
 be a linux solution.

If VLC completes this project, we could have a free, FOSS video editor
that runs on mac AND pc. It'll hopefully handle all codecs (by
breaking the law of course). Creators can start collaborating

Is there anyone with knowledge of editing in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 or Sony

writing an email to a guy in China and trying to translate it, Ill
just make a video...and let the system translate it for me.

[videoblogging] Re: 1and1 to go Unlimited web traffic on all acounts

2009-11-03 Thread pageflex2001
I don't think it's only for new accounts. I received an email from them saying;

We are pleased to unveil the new 11 Business Package with more
web space and unlimited traffic coming in October 2009. As a
result, starting October 2009 your Business package will cost
$11.99 per month*.

By listening to our customers, we've made this important change to
allow us to offer the worry-free hosting environment that your site
needs. Regardless of the amount of traffic your site generates you
won't have unexpected charges at the end of the month beyond your
monthly fees. And with more web space, you can take your site even
further.

As of October 2009 you will be able to enjoy unlimited traffic
and more web space. The new price for the Business package will be
applied at the start of your package's next billing cycle after
October 1, 2009.

So I wonder if anyone actually tried hosting videos on their servers...

Thanks

Renat

They started it a few weeks ago. Just look at their site - http://1and1.com
I couldn't find a specific url about bandwidth - it's just listed in
the features of whatever you're buying.

  Any comments?

We use 11 to host our site, but use 3rd party to hosts our videos.
But I hadnt heard of this new unlimited bandwidth feature. You have a link?

[videoblogging] Re: OMG I'm so excited to be here + feedback much appreciated

2009-11-01 Thread pageflex2001
Welcome to the gang Kristin!

I am going to give constructive criticism;

1. Site layout gets 4 stars. Why? Though the interface is clean and direct, the
nav buttons below the video are not consistent/on par with the rest of site's
buttons.

2. Presentation's content is interesting but lacks energy and spontaneity
(acting skills?).

3. Audio is terrible. Consider getting rid of the echo your first priority. It
makes you sound very unprofessional. Suggestion; clip-on lavaier directional
mike.

4. Video graphics and story inbetweeners need more innovation and pizzaz.
Consider hiring an innovative artistic video FX artist to create the shell of
your show. You can learn to do it yourself but it will take time.

5. Why use Vimeo for video hosting? Youtube has smartened up in video quality
and even offering HD, plus the visitor-base with youtube is way higher than
with vimeo.

6. More episodes link leads to a page that has no TV box around the latest
video and the eye is confused where the latest episodes are, wanting to find
the below that video but then noticing the iPhone. To tell you the truth I
thought it was an ad, like in Pandora. You should use the TV box as your user
interface and perhaps use the right side, where the TV dials are - right below
them, for inclusion of More episodes thumbnails.

Over the years of videoblogging this is what I learnt;
The show to be success must have a host that is charming with great acting
skills, smart and spontaneous, happy-go-round type with his own original style.
All that without great zesty content is nothing to make this work, and it must
be consistent in every episode. Audio must be pristine, I am not even taking
about the video... And of course the show must have a very good video editor/FX
artist that is not afraid to innovate. The site of the show must be designed in
a user-friendly and themed approach to make it memorable to the end-user. It
must contain only the things that are functional and useful, hiring a talented
graphic designer/wp theme guru is a must.

I hope this helps

 Hi everyone,

I wanted to introduce myself because I'm just joining the list. Many of your
names are familiar, though, and I'm so excited to be here.

I bought Secrets of Videoblogging right when it came out but it took me until
this year to get up enough courage to actually start my vlog. (Yup, that
means I sat on my hands for three years--pretty crazy.) In any case, I've
been posting videos regularly for the last four months or so and it's great
to be joining a community of other vloggers.

Any feedback on my vlog and site are much appreciated. It's at:
http://youdigest.com. I definitely have technical issues to work out, and I'm
hoping to migrate it to digest.tv soon to strengthen the branding. I really
would be grateful for thoughts, ideas, and criticism.

Thanks and it's a pleasure to meet you all!

Hi gang!

Has anyone tried using 1and1's web hosting to host videos on their servers
after they announced Unlimited traffic feature?

I wonder what would be the best workflow as far as using a very good flash

Any comments?

[videoblogging] Re: YouTube versus Blip.TV quality

2009-08-23 Thread pageflex2001
Too bad Blip does not support embedding true 720P HD in H.264 format. I love
the way Youtube handles it in all aspects, playback/embedding etc. Though Blip
claims it does support it, it is not really possible to embed this format
unless viewed in Quicktime browser plugin without playback controls.

Am I the only one to notice that or can anyone second that?

Thanks

  Hey Chad,

Blip does indeed collect statistics from both YouTube and Vimeo and display
