I went ahead and purchased the FS100, for many of the reasons mentioned
earlier.
In the attached photo, that I took a minute ago, you can see the mic jack,
as well as the AV out jack, which will accomodate headphones.

So far so good with this camera, although I haven't yet connected it to the
computer, charged the battery, or loaded the software. I've got some work
to do.

That FS100 looks sweet for the price, but no mic port, which is a
killer for me. I've got the HF100 (my review here:
http://techtrek.blip.tv/#972293) and so far I'm happy, the only issues
are that sometimes the white balance seems to shift between takes, but
I'm not sure.

And you're right, I don't shoot on HD mostly, but XP+ so it's easier
to edit in Final Cut Express. You simply Log and Capture, which is
about the same time as bringing in AVIs from an Xacti (I think) then
in the time line, you don't have to render at all. If it's HD, there's
a long render process if I remember right.

My sense is that for video blogging Card Only cameras, with mic ports,
the shoot out is still Canon HF vs. Xacti 1000s

I've used both, and it's pretty close for me, with Canon slightly in
the lead due to form factor (I don't like the pistol feel in terms of
the subjects and look) and User Interface.

Thanks Caleb!
From the product description (at Amazon.com):

*Microphone terminal* The FS100 features a microphone terminal for attaching
an external microphone.

Would Canon have updated the camera without changing the model number?
The reason I ask is if yours doesn't have it, why is it shown in the
description.
Furthermore, one of the tech journal's reviews mentioned that it didn't have
Image stabilization, yet the same product description says:
*Image stabilizer* Shoot rock-steady video -- even when you're at maximum
telephoto without a tripod. It is even effective while panning or zooming.

Like you, the first thing on my list is the mic terminal. Real close to
that is the Image stabilizer.

Makes me think that I shouldn't shop on a site like eBay for this, because I
might be getting one of the older ones. Best to get a brand new one that
promises to have these two features.

Any thoughts? Does anyonje know if the FS100 has been changed to
incorporate these features since originally released?

2008-09-23 Thread Jocelyn Ford
Hi Rob,

I didn't get the shoe. I plugged the Audio Technica AT835b directly into the
mini jack built into the camera.

I have also tried recording with an RE50 and had no problem.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I'm having fun, but I'm definitely on a steep
learning curve!I have a lot more hurdles to overcome

Today a news website guy told me I absolutely will have to go iMac/Final cut
pro if I want to get into news video. Anyone want to share their 2 cents on
this? I find Mac's heavier than my x61 thinkpad, and harder to lug around with
all my other video/audio gear when I get off the beaten track. Somehow, I got
the idea that arguing Mac's are too much of a load for someone who's not even
5' tall, and often finds herself traveling in cramped busses, wasn't going to
get me very far.

Jocelyn

  Hi Jocelyn!

Thanks for sharing your experience with the HF100. Which Audio Technica
shotgun do you use, and is it able to use the mini shoe that Canon placed
  on this unit?

Your video looks great, but more importantly, it is a really interesting,
well done documentary. I can only wish that I will be able to create
content as good as you did with one. It is exceptional!

I am pleased to know that there is someone here who has experience with the

Although you may be having difficulty with importing to Adobe Premiere,

Rob Jocelyn, here's a page in a review of the Canon Vixia HF10
which describes why you're having problems.
http://www.microfilmmaker.com/reviews/Issue33/HF10_6.html
And here's his workflow to get around it:
http://www.microfilmmaker.com/tipstrick/Issue33/HF10WKTH.html
Same as for the HF100 - it records 24P Normal in AVCHD. There are
all sorts of issues with AVCHD files and editing programs. The latest
versions of Premiere, Vegas, FCP iMovie seem able to cope with them
- although I've been reading problems that Chuck Olsen's had with the
Canon HG20 this week even using iMovie 08.

2008-09-22 Thread Jarod Dixon
Rob,

I have the HF-10 which has the internal 16GB flash and love it.

I've been completely lax in doing anything other than recording lots
of different things and plopping them on to the iMac - but I can say
that the videos import to iMovie easily, the video looks great, and
the built in audio sounds great and has an easily adjustable gain for
those special loud moments.

Not all that noticeable - but in some low light instances running as
high quality as I can, I do get some motion lines showing up. I notice
them more while trying to export a frame to an image more than I do
just watching.

Feel free to contact me on or offline for more specific questions, for
the price it's a great little tiny HD camera, and get's my thumbs up.
