at that time and grabs your xml data like it should. Thusonce an

your feed, no longer dealing with the cache in the directory. As a result, I get a full statistical report.

Re: [videoblogging] Vlogs As TV

2005-07-21 Thread Michael Sullivan

i have very little interest at this point in watching vlogs on a television, regularly.

if a vlog reaches a persons TV, yeah its still a vlog.
if the vlog is scratched (blog post/media permalinks, RSS and
commenting) and instead their is just a video feed (RSS and Video
stored on server), then no, thats not a vlog.
both of these can make it to a TV for viewing, but one is not a vlog... their needs to be a blog+rss to be a vlog ;-)
i think a blog must provide permalinks, which can be permalinks of
posts where media is referenced, or permalinks of the media itself,
with metadata and description etc...

a videoblog is the site which houses the media and an RSS feed (feed can be provided by 3rd party like feedburner).
a videoblog doesnt necessarily need to have enclosures (my opinion),
but if it does, i tend to refer to that as a videoblog's vodcast.

the video itself can be anything... it can be a personal video diary or a zany show like http://thisorthat-video.blogspot.com/

the medium that we use is obviously not restricted to video...
audioblogs/podcasts and photoblogs and text blogs all can
use the same technologies.

I also like to not forget about the logical approach of rich media blogging... where one blog contains mixed media.

a term to descibe generalized multimedia in blogs has barely been
discussed... but it is basically mediacasting or mediablogging.
Clint was called a a podcast session that he captured on video as a hybridcast...

TV doesnt change anything. TV set-top boxes will be able to grab
internet media using a variety of methods and technologies.
videoblogs are one source.

a good point was raised about what happens when the vlog post isviewed in a different context, ie: a show at an art gallery. does thevideo need to be seen in the context for which it was made in orderfor it to maintain it's vloginess? i think, perhaps, it does.
i,too, enjoy the intimate size of the viewing window and theone-to-one feeling vlogs inspire. while many people may be viewing thesame vlogs as i am, i am able to have a direct, one-to-onerelationship with the video maker. i am able to respond to the video
with a video of my own and link to the original piece. i am part of adialogue. i retain my individuality in a way that a televisionaudience does not.i wonder, as thestructure of video on the internet continues to
expand, if the tv model will become more prevelant and makers willscrap the blog model and use feedreaders and directories as a solemeans of distributing their video. is it still a vlog if there is nolink to a home? will the nature of vlogging change from
intercommunication to spectatorship? when broadcasting networks maketheir own online video shows, will they be vlogs or will they be tv onthe internet and does it matter?anne

Re: [videoblogging] Vlogs As Art

2005-07-21 Thread Michael Sullivan

my last round of vlogging was called 'life and art commingled'

this is because i was just capturing my surroundings as i found myself in them.
everything can be considered art... and i mean everything. everyone can be an artist.
so, i wont get into what is and isnt art... that conclusion is almost universally accepted now ;-)

vlogs do allow an immense freedom since their are no rules or restrictions.
add some music and maybe an effect here and there...or just rant.. or silence... darkness or brightness...
and you accomplish something that some will find interesting.

vlogs are perfect for doubling as an online dynamic media portfolio.. for musicians or anyone really.
it can be a great reference mark in a resume or what have you 'want to see more of me and my work... watch my vlog'

as soon as i get out of my geek dimentia of coding up vlog tools i
want to create a new vlog with some fresh ideas... take it a little
more seriously... and i'll goof around seperately

Like often happens when i read/watch/listen to people here I agree... but its besides the point.

vlog came from blog. so you need to have some of what makes a blog a blog...
all these other points are fine, but it doesnt diffuse the fact that a videoblog (vlog) is still a blog.

take for example the fact that you can technically recieve a text blog on a TV.
does that suddenly mean the blog that is on the internet is now something else just because some people are seeing it on a TV?
no way. cant get into offsprings and shit.

is what it is... unless it aint.

Re: [videoblogging] 150 - Group Tipping Point?

2005-07-22 Thread Michael Sullivan

I've heard of this...

so, you feel that the group is undergoing some passive-aggressive social dilemma here?

i think when a few people stir up things and amp up the noise level... people will get flustered... it ripples.
those who enjoy interacting using this list will find it hard to restrain from responding to some postings
their is also the ego element... even when you denounce the big ego, in doing so publicly, it is almost no different.

people like to be witty... some get too nasty. gotta keep balance... stay tuned, always.

the numbers are in the back of our head... we see how many posts are made and how many people join the group..
it can subconsciously hype you... and that leads to potential brazenness.

it's also summer. and hot most places... known to be a player in amplifying craze in all of us.
any extreme weather, actually.

i think things are ok... we have experienced social spikes (for good or bad) here before
way it is.

we should remember that what we write is being portentially read by over 1000 people...
are some playing for an audience or just looking to talk the vlog?

we need more video summer of vlog yo.. and I gotta get my act together.
maybe I will do a rant piece today...

true.
and on the contrary, as should equally be understood, the personality (voice and body language) also can influence the observer.

and still, people will praise and support them... idolize even.
this bleeds into the topic of brainwashing.

something i have long been wanting to try
ever see those HBO segues where they take quick clips of various
characters from all the shows and stream them inside of a conversation
of sorts. i fucking love that. it would be perfect for our vlogger
community too, since we all pretty much know each other and have our
owns shows ;-)

not the easiest task... would take time, but the end result would rock.

what we need is a way to open up a new win with a list of all thoe
vloggers in that country/state/city/town.
and a marker that sais how many vloggers are in that area.
maybe context menus would help here.
all i know is, i think its cool to look at for a visual
interpretation, but i never use it to actually find vloggers.

does google maps allow for this type of extensibility? i havent read the api.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: vlogmap

2005-07-28 Thread Michael Sullivan

ok 'never say never'
i have found cool vlogs.
but i dont want to sway from the issue i think you understand how
eventually, this overlapping of markers can be counter-intuitive. so,
just shooting out ideas on how it can be improved. afterall, the
enticing thing is that its a map... and i'd love for the map itself to
get better as the community grows. just looking beyond the curve.

thanks,

This is all a catch 22. Considering the are only 200 total, I'm not
worried about 1000 in NYC. While looking at the world view, how do I
visually show you 1000 markers in NYC or 5 markers in Iowa without
actually showing the markers. This is an inherent issue with vlogger
 creep.

That being said, search functionality is being improved. I should be
able to add site/url search as well as expand the locations list.

The current goal is to count the number of markers within view and run
a list on the right (only when the total in view is less than the
 column can handle).

It is too bad you're not finding new vloggers with VlogMap. We've
found tons of great sites overseas that entertain the shit out of our
 Americans asses.

Check out the boxes movie from the guy in West India.

would it be good to have a separate vlog/site to post the clips to?

i'd think so... here is my proposition.
i've been looking for beta testers for videobloggers.org... only
received a few responses so far (btw thanks devlon, for helping)
this could help me during the beta testing phase... get some usability going. fix things, make improvements.
and i think it would be a good use of the systems media management features.
so, i created a system account... interested folks can share it.
i call it 'vloggers_Unite' and we can create media albums for different collaborative projects.though
i have not enabled the blog publishing service yet, i thought it might
be convenient to make use of the free hosting and media albums, which
can help organize media for different projects... and even generate
feeds/playlists.

email me if you want to play... i'll provide login info for this account.

The film of tomorrow appears to me as even more personal than an individual and autobiographical novel, like a confession, or a diary. The young filmmakers will express themselves in the first person and
will relate what has happened to them. It may be the story of their first love or their most recent; of their political awakening; the story of a trip, a sickness, their military service, their marriage,
their last vacation...and it will be enjoyable because it will be true, and new...The film of tomorrow will not be directed by civil servants of the camera, but by artists for whom shooting a film
constitutes a wonderful and thrilling adventure. The film of tomorrow will resemble the person who made it, and the number of spectators will be proportional to the number of friends the director has. The
film of tomorrow will be an act of love. For further inspiration or simply to make sure we're all on the samepage with the concept of splicing together multiple voices, check outSony's Double life commercial for the playstation. It's exquisite.

Exquisite as it is though, I think we can totally kick it's ass. Please, go with me on this.I have a bigger vision still. I call itThe Film of Tomorrow Project==
The Film of Tomorrow Project==First, we create a website (or simply use Ourmedia) where ANYONE andeveryone can contribute a stock video of themselves or another reciting
the Truaffat quote...This collection in itself will be quite amazing. Like a we are notafraid project. We make it completely creative commons to encourageremixing. To keep it simple we can request that all source videos must
be uploaded by the owners to Ourmedia, thus we kill two birds with onestone. We ensure source videos are both archival, and Ourmediaautomatically ensures they are creative commons. On our media we simplytag the videos with the-film-of-tomorrow-project. Ourmedia hence
becomes the host and sponsor of this project. I know they'll love theattention it will bring them. ;)Second, under the freedom the creative commons licenses give us we canall mix our own versions of the Truffaut quote using the source footage
just like Matt originally proposed.Except instead of just one or twofinal mixes everyone and anyone can make their own. We can add anybackground footage, sounds, images, clips of our own, whatever we like.
The quote is open for interpretation. In this way we can each create our own homages to the idea, our owninterpretations. It's very fractal in nature, each video will be it'sown voice, each video contains the voices of dozens of others
highly self referential, thick with layers and meaning like a woventapestry. It can be a living breathing collaborative art project, anode to our heritage and culture of remixing. Most importantly it is an
ode to not just making media, but to the practice of being themedia. This is to say we're creating anew and we're reinterpretingwhat is there so our audience knows what we are passionate about. We'll
be bubling up.As time progresses much like fan flicks this stock footage can beremixed with new footage to make it new and relevant. It will grow andadapt as new people take an interest in video blogging and the project.
I'm thinking people will mix in photos and clips of their lives, touchon timely issues in the world, who knows what people will dream up it'sa highly creative bunch. Each finished video will be much like what I see in all your videos, a
spectacular film unto itself, but of course as everything we make or dosome will have a more common appeal and bubble to

Now it is clear that the name for this whole event will beVlogEurope! and all the information will be on www.vlogeurope.comasap.VlogEurope! will last from September 9th-18th, which makes a full
blasting 10 days of vlogging events in Amsterdam and elsewhere inEurope. The marathon event will have three stages:September 9th-11th: IBCIn connection with the IBC conference (
www.ibc.org) the videobloggingcommunity in Europe and elsewhere will be showing the media thevariety and depth of what we are doing. We will have people givingpress conferences, giving tutorials on how we for instance use ANT or
Mefeedia or blip.tv, and giving interested people cd-roms or DVDs witha few selected vlogs, but also including loads of links to sites likevlogdir so that this won't be about us deciding what vlogging is,
but rather giving the outside world a window into this movement. GabeMcIntyre from xolo.tv will be main responsible for this weekend'sactivities and have the last say on what happens.
September 12th-15: Four days of training. Hopefully we have reachedquite a few new videobloggers during the weekend and in these days wewill be holding daily workshops (like the ones Ryanne and others have
done in NY) where we cover videoblogging from the basics to discussionabout techniques and approaches to vlogging. There will also be acompetition of some sort during these days.September 16th-18th: Meet the vloggers (is that name copyrighted,
Markus et al?). This weekend is the vloggercue, the vloggers meetingvloggers. This weekend no press are allowed to lurk at our partyunless they start videoblogging themselves. This weekend is about US.Not as in the little clan of vloggers already vlogging, but the
meeting of people who by then are interested in vlogging and duringthe 12th-15th have had their first baby steps into vlogdom. Fridaynight is a pre-meet-up social event. Saturday we meet for lunch andthen we have a few hours of talks, discussions among ourselves. New
vloggers and old vloggers alike meet and discuss, almost like theVloggerCon in NYC in January. This lasts say from 14-18, and then at19- we have a big vloggercue. Sunday 18th we share a brunch fromabout 10 AM and then people are free to hang out together, vlog
Amsterdam, take their flights home or whatever. Main responsible forthis second weekend are currently Alex, Max, Duncan and myself. The second weekend is when all we vloggers will meet, when we willhave our meet-up, as planned. The first weekend is when some of us
vloggers will be talking to the media, to the IBC delegations, willcreate some stir, make some noise. The two weekends are like the Yin and Yang of vlogging (™MichaelVerdi). Two aspects of a larger whole. The days inbetween are the days
when newborn vloggers can explore the vlogosphere, find their ownspheres, and explore their own new-found voice. So: VlogEurope! is September 9th-18th, and we finish the ten days witha smashing vlog-party on the 17th (including celebrating two
birthdays) and a quiet brunch on sunday morning. All of the above is very unsettled, and we are still figuring out justhow we want this, but I guess it's better to give you more informationand tell you the details are uncertain than clamming shut and going
You will see.Best regards,Raymond M. Kristiansenon behalf of himself but hopefully also most of the other stakeholdersin this ;)ps. The main point is, there are not two competing events. Come for
the first weekend, or the second weekend (most vloggers seem to comefor the second one, which is perfect since then is when the vlogpartywill be), or - better still - come for the entire ten days ofVlogEurope!.

Nathan vlogs/blogs about the issue... i dont think he would mind people
discussing it and wishing him well. if we should assume not to
discuss something that he is blogging about, as contradictive as that
may be then Nathan will prob let us know.

as for the issue of consequential vlogging... everything you do can
effect something else. video, as we all know, is the most
powerful medium for transmitting the audiovisual. add then add
the Internet and archival services like IA, and a content
creators intent on letting anyone and everyone see and hear the content
that they create
i would think that you should have at least a morsel of an idea that
something somewhat controversial can come back to you in ways that you
might welcome orinstead deny and prefer to avoid. some people
want negative publicity, subscribing to any publicicty is good
publicity. others just dont realize that they themselves are as
destructable as anything else in the world.
way it is. simply know this, and then no excuses will exist.

[videoblogging] videobloggers.org

2005-08-02 Thread Michael Sullivan

what up, vloggers.

check out ibiblio.org as they updated their front page to emphasize the
supported media centric projects that are hosted with them
including videobloggers.org

i guess you know the times have changed when an announcement here for free hosting yields only a handful of responses =)
but, i am still looking for another 10-15 beta testers. just an
fyi. the registration path is currently open at the site.

I could also use some help, if anyone is interested. the project
intends to be a 'part' of all the other projects such as
wearethemedia.com and vlogpresskit.org.
Eventually, the goal is to host vlog projects that have a set agenda in
a particular field or genre... and can be a collaborative space
as well.
As for help anyone who is interested in just sharing ideas, helping
create content, design or even code the more the merrier.

This project is complimentary to other projects.

Thanks,

where do you want beta bug reporting and feedback to go? direct to you?
On 8/2/05, nathan.freitas [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Greetings videobloggers,

For the last seven (almost eight now!) months, I've been developing a
desktop media aggregator (aka videoblog downloader/player). I'm happy
to announce that
the first public beta of I/ON is out, and its available for
MacOS X and Windows XP, as a free download here: http://openvision.tv. You don't even
have to give us your email address to get it!

I/ON is also
the reason that the last entry to my own personal videoblog was
over two months ago (argh!). In light of that, I have just posted a new
video where I discuss I/ON with my collaborator, Jon Oakes. You can
watch that here, if you'd like: http://openvision.tv/itcamefrombrooklyn

As I said before, I/ON is available for free, and its
also licensed under the GNU Public License, which means its open-source.
I really wouldn't have been able to accomplish this work without the
benefit of open-source, so we figured why not give something back?

A quick set of I/ON features for you, while you're considering whether
or not its worth your time to download:

Subscribe to RSS 2.0 Feeds with Enclosures (of course) and
MediaRSS
(Preview thumbnails, yay!)
Integrated playback of Quicktime, MPEG/MP3/MP4, Windows Media*,
and
Flash* (*windows only for now)
Fast local searching, filtering of retrieved items
Integrated searching and saving of clips from: Mefeedia, Yahoo
Video, Blogdigger, and the
Internet Archive (Archive.org)
Bit Torrent Support (Works with Commonbits.org, any
BlogTorrent/BroadcastMachine/DTV site, Prodigem, etc)
A friendly, fun, easy-to-use interface! (we hope)
Multiple ways to mark, forward, and share favorite videos with
friends

If you've got a few minutes to spare, please try it out, as we would
love to get your
feedback, and maybe even gain a new loyal user. This is our first beta,
so expect some bugs and missing features! Any feedback can be sent
directly to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], or you can just reply
to this message. I'm also often on skype at 'nathanialfreitas'. We
don't have a proper bug forum or report form at this point.

As an aside for developer geeks, the whole app is written in Java,
developed in Eclipse,
and utilizes the amazing Quicktime for Java API. On Windows, we also
use JNI to
access Windows Media Player and Flash controls. I/ON also includes the
pluggable Java Media Framework, which allows us to (eventually) run on
Linux while also supporting things like OGG VORBIS and FFMPEG plugins.
Source will be
released very soon either through Jave.net or Sourceforge (as
soon as I get my act together). We hope users and
developers alike will benefit from the work we've done. There are so
many ways that I/ON could be used, specifically other than just on a
desktop, so we're excited to see what happens.

I look forward to hearing from all or any your questions, concerns, or
feedback- I'm all ears
(and eyes, too, of course).

Best regards,
 Nathan

Re: [videoblogging] Drive-by Tagging

2005-08-04 Thread Michael Sullivan

i decided to hold back from adding tags on vlogdir, which would let you tag videoblog site, feeds and the actual media links.
tagging is cool, but i am a bit frustrated that we have so many
different laces to tag instead of it all being integrated.
it makes things too complicated and shouldnt be used as a competitive feature.
this is why we are starting to talk about an Open Tagging system...
Ro, myself and others from the video vertigo clan will try and work this out.

we need to get tag systems unified. otherwise its
counter-intuitive for the whole of the vlogoshpere and open media
culture.

yep.. what josh said... thats what we need and thats what i meant.
must keep the cloudy benefits. its all about tapping into a tagging infrastructure.

on the same note, i also feel that author only tags should accompany community tags.. so i agree with Andreas.
there is no reason to exclude that ability... its only a matter of intutively implementing it.

hey-
this doesnt apply to media and blogs you have hosted elswhere (not yet
at least) but videobloggers.org supports the creation of iTunes xml and
all other flavors including yahoo mediaRSS etc...
you can create media albums, upload media and have all these xml feeds available to you...

just an fyi. though it doesnt help you like feedburner or
mefeedia can with your current hosted vlogs. soon, you can mix remotely
hosted media links together with locally hosted media inside the media
albums so that would cover everything ;-)

i dont know that their can be 100 vlog hacks. i suppose..
more likely, you can come up with 100 DV hacks or Web Dev hacks or Hardware hacks.. which are all vlog related.
for a first book, i dont think this is the right genre... but its not really a bad thing either... all good.

congrats on the approval more attention, more legitimacy.

i used to be addicted to recording myself on my old voice recorder just babbling about shit as i drove or walked around.
still do this on occasion with my portable media device... but not as often.

ah, the ole CMS verses BLOG comparison... ;-)

many blogs are CMS and vise versa. many hybrid mixed breed apps
out their. still, you can most likely always 'blog' using a CMS.

anyways, i last edited wikipedia... and appled this line:

Blogs often take advantage of RSS for syndication to other web sites and aggregator software (rss readers).

read more - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlog
its survived a week ;-)
i've said this many times... RSS does not make a blog a blog. it allows a blog to participate in the blogosphere.
RSS makes a blog a better blog, of course. but thats besides the core argument.
Simply, if Joe Schmo blogs, but doesnt give 2 shits about an audience
of strangers and therefore doesnt use RSS, you still need to call
Joe's blog a blog. Take the geekery out of the equation for the
sake of logical definition... and you'll lessen the complcation of this
debate.

videoblog is a blog... where video is primary content. adhering
to my opinions above, is why i have also been heard proposing the
use of another second term to label rich media distribution via blogs
and XML syndications... like audioblogs and podcasts... videoblogs and
whatevercasts. Apple will force feed us 'video podcasts' soon
enough. i still like vodcasts. Not everyone who vlogs will 'cast'
with RSS.

over and out.

of course, yes.
you can manually write your XML referencing media hosted all over the internet.
their are many software apps and scripts that create RSS for you as well.
dont need a blog.

another example is over on videobloggers.org. right now, the only feature available for beta testers is 'media albums'.
you upload media, and all flavors of xml get auto-generated. no
blog required (though that part will also generate xml and be enabled
in a few weeks).

also, i am sure that other types of server-side software, like media
galleries or file managers can all create RSS feeds for that
content.

Re: [videoblogging] Battlestar Galactica Videoblog (sort of)

2005-08-07 Thread Michael Sullivan

yeah their is def a blur between a video chronicle/journal series on the internet and actual blogging.
it's part latching on to the buzz word (videoblog) and part interpretaion of what a blog is.
to hollywood, internet + video that chronicles and/or documents (a
series) is a videoblog... and thats the non-geek perspective.
i doubt this will decrease and will only become more common...
this is more reason why i think the terms videoblogs and whatevercasts need to co-exist.

nice work on this guys.

last time i used demo LSP, i created a player controller that handled
two seperate QT movies simultaneously, just for experimental
purposes.

i am going to use both these rhizome versions for some experiments i have in mind...

so whats next making a rhizome generator so users can customize the xml name and location?

i'm trying to figure how how to get rhizome script to parse variables and make the xml name/location dynamic.

Re: [videoblogging] VLog Category

2005-08-08 Thread Michael Sullivan

it's true, it does help if you learn about videoblogging and the
culture that is driving it, before you get geared up. Its ok to
ask questions, but it would be better if you go back in the archives
here and read and research through other resources about the Open
Content Revolution... the Remix Culture... Participatory
Media Figure out what your goals are are you looking to
make a site with ads all over, using vlog content to lure visitors, or
are you looking to give the community something that is useful and some
sort of improvement on other tools...
do you feel that their is a dire need to have another directory?
if so, why? ask yourself these questions. Although if you
are strictly looking to make money with ads, i dont know how many
supporters you will have. Is this your motivation or not?

Also, several projects involved in this community are starting to work
together to share some data and make things like directories loosely
integrated so users dont have to add their vlogs to several
different places. the group is videovertigo (yahoo). If you
are serious about contributing something useful to the community, you
might want to join.

I'm just trying to help you help yourself here because trust me,
someone new asking questions every day on how to build your directory
and putting polls out and expecting people to consistantly help you
conjure up the best site ever... aint gonna happen.
i barely got any feedback when i put up vlogdir... and thats ok... its
not the groups responsibility and a developer should have some insight
going in... and a good sense of whats around the corner.

another piece of advice, and i may be wrong, but i decided not to add
any entries to vlogdir myself i leave it up to the community if
they want to be listed and the directory grows based on the
collective interest. thats my idea of directory etiquette.
Their will be sites, and i have seen this already, that will take the
data from existing directories and import it into theirs and then throw
ads around it hey. nothing illegal about that, but it turns me off.

again, good luck... ask questions, but more importantly, find answers.

Re: [videoblogging] DTV Registration

2005-08-10 Thread Michael Sullivan

I dont believe wmv can be supported as they use VideoLan Player (videolan.org)

Not to restart this old conversation but...
I know wmv is not horrible and in fact it is technically quite good at
its core, but it really is not ideal... and still feel that
whatver benefits are not nearly strong enough to ever conisder
using it for videoblogging you should use mp4 or 3gp or Quicktime
mov (wrapper).
I am not a fan of flv either, but i would suggest flv over wmv as well.

And I am a windows user ;-)
