Re: Questions regarding email setup on iPhone 4S for new subscriber.

2012-11-16 Thread Rob Harris
You already said you set delete to a day, so they'll be there at least that
long. YOu also set - when removed from inbox, so if they're still on the
iPhone, they'll still be on the server. Personally, I leave it this way,
never delete from the phone, I just login the PC's Outlook Express which
does download them and removes them, and that's that. They are then no
longer available to the iPhone though.

Subject: Questions regarding email setup on iPhone 4S for new subscriber.

Hi all.

I have a perplexing question regarding email setup on my new iPhone 4S which
I purchased a couple of weeks ago.

I have been able to setup my email with no problems, I can send and I can
receive with no problems, however; when my iPhone downloads the email it is
not deleting the messages from the pop server.

I setup my email as follows.

Settings.

Mail, contacts, calendars.

Add account.

Account name/description is edbar...@nf.sympatico.ca

I entered the pop and smtp servers, username, and password.

Then, I did the following.

Advanced button.

Remove is set to 1 day.

Delete from server is set to when removed from inbox.

However, if I download email messages unto my iPhone and then login to my
account from a pc the messages which are on the phone are still showing as
available for download unto a computer with an email client like ms outlook
or for viewing in a web browser.

I'd appreciate any thoughts/suggestions.

Thanks - Ed.

good quality bluetooth single ear headset for iPhone?

2012-11-16 Thread goshawk on horseback
hello all,
yes, sorry, I seem to remember that something like this has been covered at
some time, but as I already had a set I was hoping to use, I didn't really take
any notice. unfortunately however, it appears that the iPhone doesn't like, and
won't even see my good old SONY ERICSSON HBH-PV712 BLUETOOTH HEADSET for some
reason.
I wonder if it doesn't like Sony Ericsson gear, as it doesn't like my HCB-100e
Bluetooth Speakerphone unit either.

so am looking for a good quality single ear headset, preferably an over ear
rather than earbud type, with high audio quality on both mic and earphone, but
also with high volume output. price is no object, as long as it actually works
with the iPhone.

All,

There is a new version of the Facebook app in the App Store. I
installed it a bit ago, and continue to be ecstatic with its progress.
When I double a status I can now see the people who like it without
fiddling. I could get this information on the prior version, but it
required an extra step. I can now also tag in my FB status in the same
way I do it on the computer version. I type:
@name
and the list of friends matching my typing appears below the edit box.
I double tap the correct friend I want to tag, and it works nice as I
could please. I am sure there is more, but I had to put out the word.
This is a true example of a great turn around.

inserting page break in pages document in iPhone

2012-11-16 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Hi all.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't seem to find an option on my iPhone in
Pages to add a page break and I don't want to just have to keep hitting return
to fill up the page. I'm using the blank template because all of the other
choices are letters or proposals or something formal and i'm just trying to
copy my Bible passages and words to songs for church on Sunday into a document
so I can read along with my braille display and iPhone. In the past I entered
my page breaks using Text Edit on the Mac but this time i'm trying to do it all
on my iPhone and I don't like the page breaks where they are naturally falling
in some cases. Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Go Payment, I'm desperate!

2012-11-16 Thread Kim

Hi Seighard and thanks so much.

I followed your steps and it went exactly like you said it would.
But...as soon as I lauched the Go Paymend app everything went
silent. Clearly this is an app issue and not a card reader
issue. Looks like I'll just have to wait for the fix, but it
wasn't for lack of trying.

Thank you again.

Subject: RE: Go Payment, I'm desperate!

Hi Kim,

First of all, I seem to remember that not all headphone splitters

are
created equal so there may very well be some out there that would

work for
you, but as I said, I am not sure. I actually just saw one today

in an email
from NCIX.com, it's one from Monster and it's not cheap at

$24.95, vut it
states specifically it works for iPhones, iPads etc. and it even

has

independent volume controls for the 2 ports.

Now, as for Bluetooth, I just tried this with my stereo bluetooth

headset
and the wired earpods. I have never used the Go Payments card

reader, but I
don't see why it should be different as it's all a matter of

priority. So,

here is what I just did:

1. I turned on Bluetooth.
2. I started playing an audio book in the Audible app on speaker.
3. I turned on my bluetooth headset which had already been paired

with my
iPhone. After a moment the audio switched from the external

speaker to the
bluetooth headset. This is automatic and should work like that

with your

bluetooth headset.
4. I then plugged in my wired earpods which should mimic you

plugging in
your Go Payment card reader. As expected the audio stopped on my

bluetooth
headset and it switched back to the wired earpods, in your case I

am not
sure where the audio actually goes, but plugging in the card

reader into the

headphone jack does stop your audio, right?
5. I now turned my bluetooth headset off by holding the on/off

button until

it turned off. My audio continued to play on the earpod.
6. I waited a few seconds and turned my bluetooth headset back

on. I did
this while the audio book was playing on the earpods and I did

not unplug
them. Once my bluetooth headset turned on it took a second or 2

and the

audio automatically switched back to the bluetooth headset.

If this works the same way with the Go Payment card reader it

means that you
should be able to get Voiceover back to the bluetooth headset

this way. Once

again to sum it up:

1. Make sure bluetooth is on and turn on your headset so

Voiceover speaks on

the headset.
2. Plug in your card reader
3. Turn off your headset.
4. wait a few seconds and turn your bluetooth headset back on,

Voiceover

should be back on bluetooth.

Good luck, let me know if it worked.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hmmm I don't have folders but only 5 pages and it won't add anything new.
Is there a setting that I need to change somewhere?

Yes, you can have 12 folders per page, with 12 apps per folder, and 11 pages
in total.

Is there a limit to how many apps you can have on an IPod touch 4

2012-11-16 Thread Victor Marques
Hi Jen,

It sounds like you may have purchased apps that are iphone specific
and that can't run on an iPod Touch. I ran into this problem a while
back when I purchased some apps that were iPad specific through itunes
and then tried to sync them to my iPod Touch, so this may be a similar
situation.

You should check the app's compatibility with iPod Touch to see if
that's the case, if it is incompatible then you are out of luck and
you can use it only on the devices where it is compatible, even if it
is in your iTunes library. By the way, I used my app refund
allottment when I had this situation because I wasn't aware of this
(i.e. contacted Apple support to get a refund).

I type:
@name
and the list of friends matching my typing appears below the edit box.
I double tap the correct friend I want to tag, and it works nice as I
could please. I am sure there is more, but I had to put out the word.
This is a true example of a great turn around.

I have friends who use the talking ones all the time and really like them.
One of the pros of the wifi would be that you could control it away from
home where the talking one you would have to be right in front of it.
The talking one has a five year warranty and be set before you put it on
the wall. It is run by batteries so you don't lose your programming if
power is down. The others have a battery backup so same would apply.
The talking ones have everything done by voice and have the CD with them.
The one I would have to get would be $150 instead of the $139 or $99 of the
wireless.

RE: Another Great Facebook App Update!

2012-11-16 Thread Cristobal
A much better voiceover user experience than earlier versions. The one thing
that still bugs me is that depending on the app I'm using though some news
feed entries are not displayed. Either by friends or pages I like, etc. I
mention this only because one would figure that it wouldn't be the case on
the actual Facebook app, but I do find that entries don't show up and
refreshing (three finger swipe down) doesn't always reliably work.

The other feature that I actually prefer in the Voicebook app as opposed to
the FB and other third party FB apps is the ability to cycle through
comments with a one finger swipe up or down as instead of going line by line
and always having to click on the view next or previous comments button. The
VO way feels a lot more efficient and quicker.

I'm posting this to two lists, because I think it's relevant to both of them. I

there is a way to convert the bookshelf in FW to Nook. I know it's epub format,
but is it drm-protected in such a way that it can't be read on either Stanza or

Thanks,

Netatmo Weather Station WiFi connection problem

2012-11-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello List,

Just a brief update regarding the problems I’ve been having getting my Netatmo
Weather Station to connect to my WiFi.

I just received the following message from Netatmo support after they told me
earlier this week they would try and reproduce the issue by setting up a
network similar to mine with a Netgear router and Airport Express:

From: Netatmo Support [mailto:contact-supp...@netatmo.com]
Sent: Friday, November 16, 2012 8:30 AM
To: siegh...@hotmail.ca
Subject: RE: WiFi connection problem

Hi,

This short email to let you know we have reproduced the Wifi issue with an
Airport been set-up behind a Netgear router. I hope we will be able to provide
a fix next week.

Thanks for your patience

fred

I was hesitant to recommend the Netatmo Weather Station at first because of the
problem I have, but their support has been exemplary and somebody else on the
list also bought one and had no issues setting it up and I also connected it to
somebody elses WiFi easily (they were using an Airport Extreme WiFi router). It
is apparent that this only affects a small number of users with somewhat
unusual network setups and Netatmo is certainly doing their best to fix that.
Together with their willingness and promise to make Voiceover improvements in
their app I think this company definitely deserves anybody’s support. Of course
not everybody wants a wireless weather station, but if you do, Netatmo is
currently the only one I know of that can be accessed on your iPhone with an
app.

And please, before you ask what the Netatmo Weather Station is, please search
the archives for “Netatmo” it’s a unique name and all my posts were in the last
2 or so weeks, so it should be very easy to find and I explained it all before.
You can, of course, always go to www.Netatmo.com and read up about it on their
website.

Regards,

Sieghard

RE: Go Payment, I'm desperate!

2012-11-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kim,

Did you try to turn off your Bluetooth headset again after you launched the
app and then turn it on again?

It seems to me that 2 things happen: First, audio is routed to the headphone
jack as soon as you plug in the Go Payment Reader which of course is normal
behavior. I guess you might want to report this to Apple because I wonder if
they couldn't add a setting in accessibility which would allow one to force
Voiceover to go via a certain output method since there is a setting
somewhere in the Settings where you can do this for phone calls. Secondly,
it appears that after you plug in the card reader, turn your headset off and
on again you get Voiceover, but then when you launch the app it again grabs
the audio. I wonder if once again turning off and on the headset will route
it back to bluetooth.

The other thing you could do is try and launch the app after you plug in the
reader. I mean plug in the reader, launch the app first and then turn off
your bluetooth headset and turn it back on. If you have SIRI you could
probably successfully launch the Go Reader app by using SIRI even if you
don't have sound, just push and hold the home button for 2 seconds or so,
then say Launch Go Payment. Of course you have to call it by its correct
name, I don't use it so I don't know what the app is called exactly. Anyhow,
give it a try and let me know.

Hello List,

Just a brief update regarding the problems I've been having getting my
Netatmo Weather Station to connect to my WiFi.

I just received the following message from Netatmo support after they told
me earlier this week they would try and reproduce the issue by setting up a
network similar to mine with a Netgear router and Airport Express:

Hi,

This short email to let you know we have reproduced the Wifi issue with an
Airport been set-up behind a Netgear router. I hope we will be able to
provide a fix next week.

Thanks for your patience

fred

I was hesitant to recommend the Netatmo Weather Station at first because of
the problem I have, but their support has been exemplary and somebody else
on the list also bought one and had no issues setting it up and I also
connected it to somebody elses WiFi easily (they were using an Airport
Extreme WiFi router). It is apparent that this only affects a small number
of users with somewhat unusual network setups and Netatmo is certainly doing
their best to fix that. Together with their willingness and promise to make
Voiceover improvements in their app I think this company definitely deserves
anybody's support. Of course not everybody wants a wireless weather station,
but if you do, Netatmo is currently the only one I know of that can be
accessed on your iPhone with an app.

And please, before you ask what the Netatmo Weather Station is, please
search the archives for Netatmo it's a unique name and all my posts were
in the last 2 or so weeks, so it should be very easy to find and I explained
it all before. You can, of course, always go to www.Netatmo.com and read up
about it on their website.

RE: Netatmo Weather Station WiFi connection problem

2012-11-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Reggie,

Most people I think have a router which nowadays also has the capability to
create your WiFi network. I have a router which does not have integrated
WiFi, well, at least I do now, next week I get new routers for my business
and home and they will also have WiFi. Anyhow, because my routers currently
don't have WiFi, I use an Airport Express which is plugged into the router
and which in turn creates the WiFi network. You can think of it like when in
the old days people had stereo amplifiers and separate radio tuners for AM
and FM radio. You had an amplifier and connected to it was a separate tuner
with a cable. Nowadays just about everybody has either a stereo or home
theatre receiver which is an amplifier that has an AM/FM tuner built into
it.

Similarly a WiFi capable router has the WiFi radio/component built into the
router, it's all in the same box whereas mine is a router and separate WiFi
unit (the Airport Express). Sorry for the long explanation, but I can't help
it *smile*.

Anyhow, if you have a router with WiFi at home which most of us do because
we have iPhones, you should have absolutely no issues with the Netatmo
Weather Station to connect to your WiFi. As I said, when I took it to the
store in my town where they sell all the Apple stuff, they connected it to
their WiFi and it was all done in 2 minutes. Just keep in mind that the
setup wizard is currently not accessible, so you would need sighted help,
but once it is connected the information is stored in the unit and you will
never have to do this again unless you change the name or password of your
WiFi network.

The iPhone app is mostly accessible, a bit cluttered and you currently can't
get the minimum and maximum temperature readings from the previous day, but
as I said before, the company is awesome and have told me they are looking
into making Voiceover improvements in an update in the next 4-6 weeks.

I will continue to report about the progress and will become one of their
Beta Testers although I won't be able to post much about beta versions of
the app officially as developers don't want that. I have, however, a good
feeling about these guys, they are responsive and willing.

RE: Downloading via data or WiFi -- Advice requested on how best to monitor

2012-11-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

First of all, if you have a WiFi connection the iPhone will use it and not
data. So, if you hear 3 of 3 bars, WiFi connection that means you are
connected to WiFi and the iPhone will never use data if WiFi is available.

Secondly, there is a 50 Mb download limited for downloading over 3G. If you
are using Enhanced or even the level below for your Audible books, I think
there are few that are less than 50 Mb which means even if you weren't on
WiFi, you couldn't download these files. You can go ahead and try it some
time, make sure your Audible book file is over 50 Mb and try to download it
on 3G, the iPhone will show you a message telling you it can't do so.

Lastly, many apps like Downcast or radio streaming apps have settings which
allow you to limit downloads and streaming to WiFi. If you are concerned you
may accidently download too much over 3G or you don't want to stream music
unless you are definitely connected to WiFi, then just turn on these
restrictions in whichever app you are using. Ootunes has it for sure, so
does Downcast for Podcasts.

If you use Skype, keep in mind that Skype will work via 3G just fine, but it
does use about 3 Mb per minute of a voice call.

You could also get an app like Dataman which will show you how much data has
been downloaded and uploaded not only via 3G, but also via WiFi. Dataman I
think is 99 Cents or maybe $1.99 and it's accessible.

Sieghard

Subject: Downloading via data or WiFi -- Advice requested on how best to
monitor

Hi,

I'm new to iPhone, having used only iPodTouch. When downloading, is there a
way to restrict downloading to WiFi, or monitor if WiFi is in fact being
used instead of data?

Last night I used my iPhone to download a book from Audible while at home.
My WiFi was working fine; I was online with my PC monitoring work-related
emails which dripped in over the evening, as is common.

The download took much longer than usual with the iPodTouch via WiFi, but
eventually completed. This morning, just curious, I checked data usage on
the iPhone, there has been 75MB of data downloaded in 1 week (about the size
of the book I downloaded), and I haven't even used the phone for anything
much yet. The WiFi connection appears good on the iPhone. I suspect the
download was via data and not WiFi.

I double-checked the status bar last evening while downloading and the data
bars were 1 of 5, and the WiFi bars were 3 of 3. I presumed the download was
via WiFi, but now suspect it was not.

At any rate, are there settings I should know about to prevent this from
happening again when there is WiFi, or best practices advised to stay ahead
of this?

Thanks in advance. Keith

RE: Netatmo Weather Station WiFi connection problem

2012-11-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

Here is what they say on the website:

Wireless specifications

Wifi 802.11 b/g/n compatible (2.4GHz).

Supported security: Open/WEP/WPA/WPA2-personal (TKIP and AES).

Wireless connection between modules:

915 MHz or 868 MHz long range 100m.

If you actually get 100 metres (330 feet) is something you would have to
check, but I'm sure in most situations you would have the outdoor unit
between 5 and 20 metres away from the indoor unit and in any case, it sounds
you have plenty of range to place it anywhere on a standard town property.

Here is a review I found which I thought explains the device well and gives
a balanced summary about it's positive and negative aspects, keep in mind
that Netatmo only released this product a few weeks ago and I get the
impression they will follow through with what they promise which, among
other things, are additional sensors for measuring stuff like rainfall,
windspeed etc. I should also point out that what the reviewer said about the
outdoor unit having to be within range of your WiFi network is not correct
according to what Netatmo says on their website. It actually makes sense
that it doesn't have to be in range since the indoor unit is what connects
to your WiFi and the outdoor unit is prepaired with the indoor unit using
915 Mhz, this is a band that was used with older cordless phones and I
always found that these older 900 Mhz phones had much better range. Here the
review:

The Netatmo Weather Station is described as the first personal weather
station for iPhone iPad.

The Weather Station itself consists of two pieces of hardware, and the
company provides a free iOS app for accessing weather data from these
devices.

Like a standard weather station, the Netatmo Weather Station has an indoor
module and an outdoor one. Each module is a sleek-looking aluminum and
white-plastic cylinder; the indoor module is six inches tall, with its
outdoor counterpart about four inches tall. The indoor module needs to be
plugged into a power outlet, while the outdoor module uses four AAA
batteries. Though the battery power means you can place it anywhere, you
must position the outdoor module in a location that's in range of your Wi-Fi
network.

To set up the Weather Station, first you connect a USB cable from an iOS
device (running the Netatmo app) to the indoor module; the app transfers
your Wi-Fi-network settings and credentials from your iOS device to the
indoor module so it can access your network. The outdoor module is
pre-paired with the indoor module, so after tapping a few setup buttons and
screens, the entire weather station is up and running.

The Weather Station gets your geographic location from your iPhone, so the
system is able to determine your exact altitude for calibrating its
barometric-pressure sensor. In addition to pressure, the Weather Station
measures temperature, humidity, and, for the indoor module only, CO2 and
ambient noise level.

Once I set up the Weather Station, I found that it took a few days for
readings to stabilize. I already own a standard weather station, and there
were fairly large differences in temperature and humidity readings at first.
But after the initial-literal-acclimation period, the Netatmo's readings
were close to those of my existing weather station, which, thanks to recent
professional testing, I know is accurate to within 1/2 a degree.

To view current readings, you launch the iOS app, which shows all collected
data and, when you rotate your iOS device to landscape orientation, shows
graphs of data over time. The Weather Station takes automated readings every
5 minutes, so these graphs can show you detailed information if, for
example, you want to know what the temperature was at a particular time
during the night. If you want to take an instant reading of current
conditions, you just press the top of the indoor module.

A screen in the Netatmo Weather Station's iOS app

The iOS app is very well designed, letting you see all of the available data
in a glance. If you drag the horizontal bar (in the middle of the screen)
upward, you see more information, including the latest indoor CO2-leel and
sound-level readings; dragging the bar downward shows you weather forecasts
for the next three days, and you can swipe to the left to see an additional
three days. These forecasts-obtained over the Internet from weather-forecast
sources-are as local as possible, since the iOS app uses the precise
location of your Weather Station, and are updated every three hours.

You can also use multiple Weather Stations together; tapping the bar at the
top of the app's screen lets you choose a different station. (When using the
app, you can access weather stations on your local Wi-Fi network; you can
view the data for any weather station, local or remote, via your account on
the Netatmo website.) However, Netatmo does not currently sell individual
outdoor modules-if you want to monitor data at, say, two locations around

 Hello everyone,

I am using Samantha as my voiceover default. What can I do to have
voiceover
read dates in unintelligible format? I mean it just reads the dates in
messages or reminders as a set of numbers. Is there anyway to make
voiceover
 read them as real dates?

Thanks for your help and I hope my question makes sense to you. All the

The Search feature in the iPad App Store is again accessible!

2012-11-16 Thread Debbie April Yuille
Hi All

After hearing that the App Store had been down for a few hours, I wondered
if Apple had been doing some work to fix the accessibility issues that us
iPad users had been experiencing. So, this morning, I thought I'd check out
the app store on the iPad for myself and to my great surprise, the search
function is again usable with voiceover. I have an iPad 2 but I'm guessing
that the app store should be the same for other iPads as well. I hope this
news brings as much joy to other iPad users as to myself.

iHeart radio setup problem

2012-11-16 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Since the iHeart radio app is free, I am hopeful that one or more of you
folks would download it and set up an account so I can determine the
cause of this problem which is probably a lack of operator knowledge. I
should probably mention that I am attempting to install this on the
newest iPod running 6.0.1.

When I go to establish an account, I can enter the email address,
confirm the email address, and enter the password without difficulty. I
can also enter my zip code without issue. However, as near as I can
determine, I am not able to select male when it asks for gender; nor can
I enter my year of birth. The year of birth seems to show 1977 as a
default, and I find no way to change this. Another issue is that I am
required to acknowledge that I have read and agree to the terms. But
when I do so, Safari is launched showing me the terms and conditions.
When I hit escape on my blue tooth keyboard to get out of Safari, I then
have to double tap iHeart to open it, and the previously entered account
data is no longer present.

So what am I doing wrong? It probably has a lot to do with my
unfamiliarity with Safari, and perhaps I am not closing Safari properly.
Feedback is welcome. Thanks in advance.

RE: guides and grants for app accessibility?

2012-11-16 Thread Brett
Hi,

Here are a couple of suggestions to get them started.
The accessibility programming guide for iOS:
http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/UserExperience/Concept
ual/iPhoneAccessibility/Making_Application_Accessible/Making_Application_Acc
essible.html

Also Matt Gemmell's article:
http://mattgemmell.com/2010/12/19/accessibility-for-iphone-and-ipad-apps/

There is also a video demonstrating how to create accessible iPhone apps on
iTunes You, but I can't remember what its called right now. I am sure a
search of iTunes You will turn it up, quite easily.

Hope this helps,
Brett.

all of the other choices are letters or proposals or something formal and
i'm just trying to copy my Bible passages and words to songs for church
on Sunday into a document so I can read along with my braille display and
iPhone. In the past I entered my page breaks using Text Edit on the Mac
but this time i'm trying to do it all on my iPhone and I don't like the
page breaks where they are naturally falling in some cases. Any help
 would be appreciated.
