It sounds the closest to me to a standard large stereo of any of the Bose
units. I own one myself and use it quite often. Definitely not a portable
but you can also use it as an iPod dock, a bluetooth device, or with its aux
input. Haven't tried its video output.

I use the Bose sound dock 10 with the Bluetooth adapter so my iPhone stays

cheap at around 7 hundred dollars but it sure is worth it. Their add says
it might be the only stereo you need. I don't know if I'd quite go that
far, however I'm also pretty sure that finding people who would agree with
that statement wouldn't be hard to find either. The sound dock 10 is not
something you would want to carry around. It weighs around 25 to 30 pounds
and is strictly not battery powered. It does also have a 3.5 Mm jack in
back for other smart phones and mp3 players and the BT adapter is another
hundred bucks but I like having my phone in my hand. It also has a video
pass so if your watching a movie on your iPhone you can pass it to your TV
and keep the audio through the sound dock 10 You can't see the sound dock
10 at Target etc. It's only sold online or in a Bose store. Still, you
really have to hear it to believe the sound it produces..

Thanks, this is very valuable. Here in South Africa we don't
have the luxury to be able to take an item and test it

tend to go for the Jambox also because it has some built-in

Hello I was trying to decide the same thing.
I first got the Bose sound link and tried it for a day or
 two.
 Yes it had nice bass.
But the mids and highs didn't seem pleasing to me.
So I took it back and picked up the big jam box.
 And I love it.
It has good sound all around and it can get quite loud with
 good osund
 threw out.
You can also use the big jam box as a speaker phone when you
 get I call
if you are using your I Phone for music or streaming audio.
Also the big jam box batter runs for about 12 up to 15
 houts.
If you can go to a store like Best Buy or a store like that
 and check
out the both of them and see which one you may like.
But my vote is for the big jam box.

seen every symbol other than it known to human kind, including the Tilde and
the Number sign, which are right on either side of it when using a shifted

phones, the CDMA phones, that do not use sim cards? I know the GSM phones use
sim cards, but I don’t think the CDMA phones use sim cards, such as the Verizon
iPhones.

Hi Allan, the sim slot is on the right-hand side of the phone. There is a tiny
tiny round hole that an ejector tool, supplied with the phone, slots into.
Press with the ejector tool and a tray pops out containing the micro-sim.

Google Groups [was Re: Weirdness in mail on iPhone 4 under IOS6}

2013-01-16 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I just go to groups.google.com or click on the Groups link at the top of
a Google page. You can then click on My Groups to get your list of
groups. Note you need to be logged into Google with the same account you
use to subscribe to your mailing lists.

If you want to change your settings for a groups, there's a Membership
button on the group's page, right before the list of messages. You can
click on this and determine if you want each message sent to you
directly (the default), digest mode or no messages at all.

Problem with clock alarm and DND in 6.0.2

2013-01-16 Thread Wayne Merritt
Greetings. I know some have had issues with Do Not Disturb in iOS
6.0.2. My issue may be related to that, I'm not sure. I have an alarm
set to go off every weekday starting at 5:15. Twice now the alarm has
not gone off and I woke up as much as an hour later. These alarms are
through the native clock app on the iPhone 5. The first time it
happened, DND was set to end later than expected. However, this
morning when it happened, the DND end time was 5:10, which is what it
should be. Any ideas? has anyone experienced this behavior? I have an
iPhone 5 with iOS 6.0.2.

taking notes and sharing/syncing them between devices and even platforms.
Dropbox is primarily a file and media storage service and you find a lot of
apps like Elements which is a text editor or Dropvox (spelled with a v as

Re: Problem with clock alarm and DND in 6.0.2

2013-01-16 Thread Christopher Chaltain
My understanding is that the DND bug in 6.0.2 resolved itself on Monday,
January 7, so this shouldn't be related.

You might also want to check your alarm volume. I had a similar problem,
and it was because my alarm volume was too low to hear. I didn't have
any trouble hearing VO, but like I said, it was hard hearing the alarms.
I'm not exactly sure what I did to fix it, but I assume I brought up
some music or an alarm and then used the volume buttons to make sure it
was loud enough.

RE: Update on the at sign + new Ipad 3 thread

2013-01-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Mark,

You can tell SIRI your user Id, but SIRI or Dictate is not available in a
Password field since that would not be secure as somebody may overhear you
and in any case, it would be hard to dictate a password that is just random
characters, numbers and symbols and where letters are both upper and lower
case. Of course most people use simple words as passwords, but this is an
invitation for disaster.

As many pointed out, iOS is smart enough to know when you are in an email
field and typically your @ symbol is just to the right of the space bar and
to the right of that is a .com so if you use a gmail address, all you have
to type is your name, find the space bar and slowly slide right until you
are off the space bar and find the @ symbol. Then type gmail and find the
.com button.

One other thing you can do until you get better at this is to find the right
Enter key as this one won't activate simply if you lift your finger, you
have to split or double tap it. Once Voiceover says Enter and if you are
in the Apple Id field, do a single finger swipe left. The first thing you
should find is the .com or maybe just a period depending on the layout, I
only have an iPhone and the iPad is slightly different because it has more
space. Then swipe left again and you should find the @ symbol.

RE: Problem with clock alarm and DND in 6.0.2

The Alarm volume is set in the Clock setting when you first setup your Alarm
and as far as I know you can't change it with the volume buttons at least
not permanently.

My understanding is that the DND bug in 6.0.2 resolved itself on Monday,
January 7, so this shouldn't be related.

You might also want to check your alarm volume. I had a similar problem, and
it was because my alarm volume was too low to hear. I didn't have any
trouble hearing VO, but like I said, it was hard hearing the alarms.
I'm not exactly sure what I did to fix it, but I assume I brought up some
music or an alarm and then used the volume buttons to make sure it was loud
enough.

List Recorder sending recording via email

not play it in winamp or even not in GoldWave. I thought it
should have a .M4A extention.
Can anyone help?

Thanks, Sieghard:
Thanks for this; I haven't tweaked VO's settings yet, so it's on the beginner
settings, highest verbosity, unfortunately. Thus, as it is now, split-tap is
not enabled, and you have to tap twice to enter a character into the text
field. Going to have to fix this sooner than later.

Re: Update on the at sign + new Ipad 3 thread

2013-01-16 Thread Christopher Chaltain
If double tapping to enter a character works then split tapping should
work as well. These are just two different ways of standard typing. The
setting switches between standard typing and touch typing. Unless I'm
mistaken, there's no setting to turn on split tapping. You just get it
for free with standard typing.

Participants needed for 2 navigation research studies

2013-01-16 Thread Michele Burton

Hi everyone, I’m Michele Burton, a PhD student at the University of
Maryland, Baltimore County. I am currently looking for several participants
for 2 studies related to indoor and outdoor navigation techniques of people
with vision impairments to help inform the design of new navigation aid
technology. Specifically I am looking for people with vision impairments
who cannot navigate using vision and, therefore, use a navigation aid.

Study #1: Design Team

I will be forming a long-term design team who will participate in monthly
focus groups and contribute relevant information on a regular basis using a
diary study method. Participants will meet either in-person in the local
Washington, DC Metro area or remotely via telephone or service such as
Skype. The “diary” entries will consist of notes taken in everyday
activities and occasional online surveys. This is a 6-month commitment and
participants will earn up to $600.

Study #2: One-on-One Interview

This is simply a 1-hour interview pertaining to navigation. This can be
in-person or over the phone and participants will be compensated $20.

Interested parties are asked to email me at the address below to set up a
time when I can speak with you briefly to see if you are eligible to
participate.

Thanks,

Michele

Hi Mark,

On my iPod Touch I found what I believe to be the @ sign and the sign by
doing the following:

1. to the lower left I found more numbers. and double tapped.
2. After finding the numbers row I slid my finger across until I reached the
#8. At 8 simply move your finger to the item

immediately below.
3. If you move just a tiny bit to the left right under the number 8 you will
come across the ampersand and to it's right will be
what I think is the @ sign. I'm conveying I think because its hard to
understand what the speech synthesizer is conveying, but I'm

pretty sure its saying at. Give that a try.

This is what I found online about it:
Enabling and disabling the iPad split keyboard.
1. Tap the Settings app from your device’s home screen.
2. Tap “General” from within the settings app.
3. Tap “Keyboard” from within the General settings page.
4. Tap the toggle switch next to “Split Keyboard” to enable or disable it.

Re: Bose Sound Dock 10

2013-01-16 Thread Alan Paganelli
Have you tried sending the video to a TV set? I had some video we shot on
my iphone 4 last August when we took our motor home to Billings MT to visit
family and later to Yellowstone national park. I figured this was as good a
chance as any. There is a video out jack on the back of the sound dock 10.
It's an RCA plug. I connected a cable to the sound dock 10 and to the back
of my TV's video in jack. The TV is only a 26 inch set but the video was
great. When they say it's 720-P I didn't think much about it. What do I
care about the video quality. Looks fine to me even with the cable
unplugged but that's another story. I just wanted to see if it actually did
work. So think of it as an FYI kind of thing! grin

It sounds the closest to me to a standard large stereo of any of the Bose
units. I own one myself and use it quite often. Definitely not a
portable but you can also use it as an iPod dock, a bluetooth device, or
with its aux input. Haven't tried its video output.

isn't cheap at around 7 hundred dollars but it sure is worth it. Their
add says it might be the only stereo you need. I don't know if I'd quite
go that far, however I'm also pretty sure that finding people who would
agree with that statement wouldn't be hard to find either. The sound
dock 10 is not something you would want to carry around. It weighs
around 25 to 30 pounds and is strictly not battery powered. It does also
have a 3.5 Mm jack in back for other smart phones and mp3 players and the
BT adapter is another hundred bucks but I like having my phone in my
hand. It also has a video pass so if your watching a movie on your
iPhone you can pass it to your TV and keep the audio through the sound
dock 10 You can't see the sound dock 10 at Target etc. It's only sold
online or in a Bose store. Still, you really have to hear it to believe
the sound it produces..

Thanks. The newspaper article about the complaints FL got when they did this
the other night said with iphones it was in the menus, with Android you had
to call carrier. I’ll give Verizon a shout, literally.

 Hi,

it's in Notifications. also, that stuff is carrier specific, so if the
setting's not there, your carrier doesn't support it.

Re: Single ear headset suggestion

2013-01-16 Thread Terje Strømberg
What brand is the ear head?

Take care
Terje Strømberg

Den 15. jan. 2013 kl. 21:42 skrev Brett C. blindinnova...@gmail.com:

 Hi Keith,

I'll give it a shot. I'll describe as though you just picked it up for the
first time. The earpiece can swivel, so that you can use it in the ear of
 your choosing.
On the piece resting behind the ear, there are two switches. The switch
closest to the bottom is power. The power is on when the button is pushed
up. If you have the speaker in your ear, you will automatically hear the talk
 time remaining announced.
The button above the power is the volume. Simply bump it up to increase
volume, and down to decrease volume.
The next button I'll describe is located near the swivel part of the boom
mic. It's a flat feeling button, though it is raised. I believe this is
called the talk button. Tap this button and you'll hear a voice prompt tell
you to say a command. Say the words what can I say? and the voice will
verbalize a list of commands. This same button is used to mute a call. While
on a call, hold the button for close to two seconds, a tone will sound and
the call is muted on your end. Repeat same step to discontinue the mute
feature. Another function of this same button is to stop and resume music
playing. While playing a book or music, hold the button for close to two
seconds, a tone will sound, and the music will stop. Repeat to resume play.
The last button is located on the end of the stem of the boom mic, closest to
the earpiece. When a call comes in, tap it to answer. Alternatively, you can
just say answer . Tap the same button to end a call. To redial the last
number called, double tap the button. I've found that if you have not made a
called since you powered it on, it will not remember the last called prior to
turning it off. Voice dialing and Siri can be activated with this same
button. Hold the button for close to two seconds, you will hear a tone,
release the button and then you will hear the familiar Siri tone. If the
button is held for too long, the unit will go into pairing mode. If pairing
mode is activated, the only way I've determined to stop its to turn the unit
 off and on again.
There other features I find useful without the use of any buttons. If you're
on a call using the earpiece, you can take the piece off of your ear, and the
call is automatically made available on the handset. If your phone rings and
you don't have the earpiece on, you can put the earpiece in place, and the
 call will automatically be answered.
To charge the unit, there is a magnetic piece at the end of the charging
cable, it easily connects to the unit at the base below the power button.
I think this covers it for the most part. I hope this is helpful in some way.

Re: Cim Card Question

I know on the 3GS iPhones, the sim card is at the top of the phone, in between
the headphone jack on the left and the power button on the right. You have to
use like a straightened paper clip to stick into a tiny little hole in order to
pop the sim card tray out. Not sure where the tray is on newer models of the

 Hi Rebecca,

Apple has apparently not considered additional voices important at this
point and since Apple controls these things rather strictly, it is of course
not possible to install additional voices in any other way.

It would be best if you wrote to ap...@accessibility.com and asked them that
you would consider an additional voice a useful feature or at least they
should make the voices for the various countries they have availableto be
set as default without requiring one to change one's region to that voice's
country. In addition it would be nice if they allowed for the download of at
least 2 HQ voices. I did request the latter from them, but of course if more
people do they may actually do something about it down the road.

Re: Stop phone from ringing through speaker?

2013-01-16 Thread Alan Paganelli
I know if you flip the little switch on the top left-hand side of an iPhone,
the sound will not go through the speaker but it will still go through a
Bluetooth ear peace. I call an ear peace one of those devices with 1 ear peace
and a microphone used for telephone calls. A head set is for listening to
music mostly but can still have a microphone. I don't use those because it
isn't a good idea when walking down the street. However with an ear peace they
do not interfere with your hearing when not on a phone call.

When I have that switch set to silent, no sound comes out of the speaker. I
still need to hear incoming calls though. When a call does come in, I can then
choose to answer it or let it go to voice mail. Sense I'm the president of our
home owner's association, I may need to take that call so I'll excuse myself
and let my vice president conduct the meeting and step out of the board room.
If we are holding hearings, I am required by law to preside over that meeting
in which case, I turn my phone off. When your dealing with somebody else's
money or possibly having to impose fines and that sort of thing, there are just
times when the phone has to be turned off.

Re: Looking for a way to keep a diary on my phone and mac running snowlepoard

2013-01-16 Thread Alan Paganelli
I have kept a personal log sense 1996. I just don't like the term diary.
Makes me sound like a teenager and I'm going to be 65 in 2 months.

I use simple text files named after the date such as 1 16 2013 dot TXT in a
folder January 2013 in a folder called 2013. I keep my personal log folders
and files on Dropbox so that it doesn't matter if I'm on my laptop, my netbook,
or my iPhone, I still have access to the files. I also use the free Jart
program because it has a chell specker which I need badly. There are several
apps for iPhone which will let you use text files and lets you move the files
to dropbox. The added advantage is, should your laptop, netbook, iPhone etc
have a problem, get lost or stolen, you won't lose years worth of entries. I
also once a year usually in January burn a new CD of my personal log so there
is always a backup somewhere.

Re: Fleksy Question

2013-01-16 Thread Bill Rappos
Hi all!

Thanks for checking out Fleksy!

In standard Fleksy typing mode, a swipe left will always delete the last
word entered, or the word currently being typed.

It is possible, however, to delete by character, when in accutyping mode.
This is the typing mode that enables entering custom words: Tap and hold on
the keyboard and drag to your desired letter. Release. Every letter you
input this way, you can delete with a swipe left.

You can at any time dive into the extensive instructions by visiting this
link: http://manual.fleksy.com

And feel free to contact the Fleksy team any time at support @ fleksy.com

Happy Typing!

Bill

Thanks for replying. But I don't think having the mute button on all the time
is the solution I want to this problem. My other sounds don't play through the
speaker when using the headset, just the phone ringtone.

Secondly, I don't think your distinction about headsets is quite accurate or at
least if it is accurate, it isn't a distinction that is always upheld. My
bluetooth single earpiece is called a headset on websites where it is sold; it
is one-ear and is not primarily for music. I'm not quite sure what the
distinction is.

Now that's an idea! How did you do that? Did you just record 30 seconds of

Re: Accessible tip calculator

Hi everyone,
Just a gentle reminder, in the US, a ten percent tip is a very poor tip by
today's standards. Though the conversion is easy, leaving a ten percent tip in
a restaurant where you've received good or great service is an insult to your

I know that tipping customs very from country to country, so I'm speaking only

Now that's an idea! How did you do that? Did you just record 30 seconds of
silence or is there an easier way to do this. It's probably obvious and I'm
just not thinking of it. That actually is my problem partly. The ringtone
coming externally keeps me from sometimes hearing the identification through

Hi friends:

I had to download the app mentioned on the subject because I purchased a IBook
that just can be read using this app and Adob Digital Edition on the Mac.

Is this app accessible?

So far, I was able to open the book, choose the chapter I want to read but
could not read the pages, I dont know if the pages are seen by VO as images or
if I am doing something wrong.

Any idea???

Regards.

a lot of the password problem has to do with the power of modern systems. my
machine here cn crack most passwords within 6 hours for most passwords of 12
ro 20 characters.

A big part of this capability has to do with a rainbow dictionary file. I
spent about 5 days letting a password generator create every sequential
password combination starting from 4 characters and proceeding through the
40 character limit. the passwords included every generatible character (15
symbols, punctuation, numbers, upper and lower case letters). the file was
approximately 1.5 TB. This is what most modern script kiddies (I refuse to
honor them with the title hacker) uses. Some educated guesses (such as
birthdate, sun, other personal info) can be made on available data (no one
is immune to having an online profile these days). this will tend to cut
down the time required. Still, the oldest (and most tried and true) method
is still the classic social engineering. the second is hidden code (virii,
worms, and trojans). With the plethora of vectors available, its a wonder
that more doesn't happen.

anyway, this my 2 cents worth.

Subject: SPAM email, hacked email accounts and password safety

Hi List,

I have seen this before, it is clearly SPAM and since Anna is a legitimate
list member it probably means somebody hacked her account. This is why I am
also forwarding this message to Raul directly in case he didn't have time
yet to read it. Hopefully he has a way to contact Anna or maybe she will
read this post. She needs to change her password immediately and I would
probably hazard a guess and say her password was probably a fairly simple
word. I can only stress again how important it is for people who use a word
even if it is 8 or 10 characters long and contains maybe a number or 2 to
change it to a random password with upper case and lower case letters,
numbers and symbols. Not all websites allow symbols, but if they do use
them. Here is a good article about password strength and it contains a
method I have been using for some time. The article gets a bit technical at
times, but I encourage everybody to read it anyhow:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Password_strength#Creating_and_handling_passwor
ds

In section 5.2 a method called mnemonic passwords is described like this:

Password policies sometimes suggest memory techniques to assist remembering
passwords:

mnemonic passwords: Some users develop mnemonic phrases and use them to
generate high-entropy (more or less random) passwords which are nevertheless
relatively easy for the user to remember. For instance, the first letter of
each word in a memorable phrase. Silly ones are possibly more memorable.

I suggest not to use a well-known quote like To be or not to be, that is
the question. Use something out of your life that makes sense to you. For
example:

I really like Clive Cussler books, for those who aren't familiar with them
the 2 main characters are Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino, one of my favourite
books of his is called Inca Gold, it was first published in 1994.

Using this information I make up the following sentence:

Inca Gold is my favorite Cussler book; Pitt and Giordino are awesome! 1994

Note I used upper case for the first leeters of the book titleInca Gold
and capitalized the first letters of all the names. I used a semicolon in
the middle of the sentence an exclamation mark at the end and I stick the
year when the book was published at the end. This sentence contains 12
words, 2 symbols and 4 numbers. If I use the first letter of each word, the
2 symbols and numbers it gives me an 18-character password. I know this may
be too long for many and it's sort of a pain to enter it especially on a
virtual keyboard, but this is just an example although you should use at
least 12 characters to have a really secure password. If I were to use this,
the resulting

longer opened to that screen but now just starts and says tap once to start or
something like that. I checked Fleksy settings in the settings area of the
phone and there is nothing I can do there. In my current app I can't figure
out how to get out of the typing mode.

Sorry for such a strange question but I'm stumped.

 Hi all!

 Thanks for checking out Fleksy!

In standard Fleksy typing mode, a swipe left will always delete the last word
entered, or the word currently being typed.

It is possible, however, to delete by character, when in accutyping mode.
This is the typing mode that enables entering custom words: Tap and hold on
the keyboard and drag to your desired letter. Release. Every letter you input
this way, you can delete with a swipe left.

You can at any time dive into the extensive instructions by visiting this
 link: http://manual.fleksy.com

And feel free to contact the Fleksy team any time at support @ fleksy.com

 Happy Typing!

Re: Bluefire Reader

2013-01-16 Thread Esther

Hello Marcos,

The Bluefire Reader app renders the text content of all eBooks in this
app, even those which have no DRM, invisible to VoiceOver. In other
words, you will not be able to read any book in this app using
VoiceOver. OverDrive Media Console will let you read eBooks protected
with Adobe Digital Editions digital rights management, although the
reading experience is better with iBooks or Kobo Books. Although
OverDrive Media Console was designed primarily to let you play
audiobooks or eBooks that you borrow and download directy from your
local library, you can also import an eBook with Adobe Digital
Editions DRM into the app and read it, in the same way that you can
read borrowed library eBooks with ADE DRM. I tested this once on an
external eBook with ADE DRM. I believe you can point your device to a
download link and use the open in option to open the eBook in this
app. alternatively, iTunes file sharing should work.

Here's the app store URL for this free app:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/overdrive-media-console-library/id366869252?mt=8

You can read more about it at the AppleVis site.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

could not read the pages, I dont know if the pages are seen by VO as images

 Any idea???

Basic Questions on Navigon

Perhaps there is an URL with the information I'm looking for, but I still
want to be certain that I have answers to the following questions:

1) Does this app require an independent GPS receiver?

2) If so, is there a list of compatible such devices?

3) Can a user manual and/or user guide be found online?

4) If so, where?

5) What is the nature of technical support?

6) Is there additional cost for technical support if such exists?

7) Will this app function efficiently on an iPhone 5 with 32 Mb memory?

Thanks
