Re: Urgent questions re transferring data from an IPad Mini 3 to an IPad Mini 4 - any help/advice much appreciated

2016-01-07 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Eleanor,

The easiest thing would be to update the Mini 3 to iOS 9.2 and then do another
iCloud backup. Then restore the new iPad from the Mini 3 backup.

Best,
Anna

2016-01-07 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Eleanor,

You don't need to reset the Mini 3. Go to Settings/General/Software Update, and
follow the prompts to update to iOS 9.2. Then go to Settings/iCloud/Backup and
back up your iPad. Then you can restore the new iPad from that backup.

Best,
Anna

Hi Eleanor,

Sorry, I misunderstood. On the 4, choose Erase All Content and Settings. Then
go through the setup process again and restore from the Mini 3 backup.

Hi

The Mini 3 was already running IOS 9.2 - it was my new Mini 4 that, to my
surprise, was only running IOS 9. So I have a 9.2 back-up from my Mini 3, but
how would I now go about transferring the back-up onto the Mini 4 now. That I
have upgraded the Mini 4 to 9.2?

Urgent questions re transferring data from an IPad Mini 3 to an IPad Mini 4 - any help/advice much appreciated

2016-01-07 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via VIPhone
Hi all

Am really hoping someone might be able to help me here. I collected my new IPad
Mini 4 today and have been trying to set it up all evening, but it's not gone
without its hitches.

My main concern has been/is ensuring that all my data came across successfully
from my IPad Mini 3 (which I'll be selling to a friend once I've cleared it),
to my new IPad. So I was advised to set up my new IPad from my latest ICloud
back-up of the old one. However, when I came to do this my Mini 4 told me that
it didn't have the latest IOS system on it (I.e. 9.2) so couldn't accept the
back-up from my Mini 3! The only thing it'd let me do is set the device up as a
new IPad and then update the IOS system. So does anyone know if there's now a
way I can transfer the latest ICloud back-up of my Mini 3 onto my Mini 4??

Also, I want to make sure that all my ringtones come across successfully, as I
have spent a long time building up my collection and don't want to lose them
all/have to get them all again. So what's the best way of doing this?? Would it
be through my Mac? If so, could someone give me some instructions on/remind me
how to do this??

Thirdly, what's the best way/how do I ensure that all my photos, contacts and
music have all come across safely??

So sorry for all the questions, but I want to make sure I've done everything I
need to and that it's all work before I clear my Mini 3. So any
help/advice/hints/tips anyone can give to assist me with this really would be
very much appreciated.

Many thanks.

RE: Talking Goggles versus AIPoly

2016-01-07 Thread Merv Keck
I was teaching a class today and while waiting for a student to arrive I
demonstrated AIPoly to a visually impaired student who was wearing a white
sweater and it said underwear, laughs! She was a little intrigued I think,

Subject: Talking Goggles versus AIPoly

I just installed AIPoly and it definitely has potential. A nice, simple layout
and on my 5S it automatically announced what it say after a couple of seconds.
I was pointing it at various areas in the room I am currently in and it said
things like “Closet”, “Door”, “Furniture”, “Curtains” etc.

I then held a bottle of generic Tylonol 1 up to it, this is the stuff we can
get here in Canada that has 8mg of Codeine as well as some Caffeine along with
whatever the normal Tylonol incredient is and the generic name is
“acetaminophen” and all AIPoly told me when I showed it various views of the
bottle was “Pills”, “Medicine” or “prescription”.

I then used Talking Goggles on it in video mode and it read all sorts of stuff
to me including a lot number, expiry date, the word “acetaminophen”, “8mg
Codeine” etc. Definitely a lot more useful than “Medicine” or “Pills”.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi. Thanks for that information. So, having just looked under settings on the

You

Greatly increase the speed of your Apple Watch

2016-01-07 Thread Robin Christopherson
Dear listers

I got this tip from a mainstream tech podcast and it has increased the speed
and responsiveness of my watch significantly. On the watch go to Settings >
General Accessibility > Reduce motion and it stops all the animations on app
startup and fancy transitions when you move between screens. I’m not sure how
much it impacts the visual aesthetics of the UI in general but for me it’s a
small price to pay for far greater responsiveness of the device.

For info I also have it set to wake on wrist raise (under General in Settings
on the Watch) but not for VO to speak on wrist raise (under Accessibility in
the settings in the Watch app on the phone) which can also improve
responsiveness in as much as the screen is awake when you do the first tap on
it to hear what is under your finger and you don’t first have to do a tap to
wake the screen but at the same time you don’t get VO chirping away all the
time as you generally move your arm around.

For info the above settings of reduced motion and wake on wrist raise typically
give me around 40-50% battery at the end of the day after using it for general
tasks and also four or five 10-15 minute workouts. Not sure how that compares
to others experience but just for info. I should probably add that I also have
it set to wake for 15 seconds rather than 70 and as I have sighted family
around I don’t have screen curtain on. I believe it’s an OLED screen on the
watch so screen curtain should have a significant impact as there is no
backlight unlike on the phone.

Thanks, Robin

smart beetle+iphone question

2016-01-07 Thread Roger Frischenmeyer
Hi, I recently purchased the smart beetle braille display and was
wondering is their a way to make the braille automatically pan? I know
that the letter r with the spacebar makes voiceover read from selected
item forward but it only shows the first 14 cells of each page. Any help
would be appreciated. Also, if you do know how to automatically pan, can
you tell me how to slow it down or speed it up as well. thanks roger

VoiceOver does not currently support autoscrolling, so sadly, no

RE: Strange Behavior After Labeling a Folder

I have tried all of these suggestions and, unfortunately, have had no luck.

I will be calling Apple Accessibility and will let the list know if there is a
solution.

Unfortunately I can only provide some suggestions. I believe somebody already
said they also did this and had the same problem and that they deleted the
folder and it still persisted. I was going to suggest that you move all apps
out of the cooking folder so it goes away and that this may then solve the
problem, but it would appear that is not the case. Nonethless I would try it,
maybe just move your current folder to an empty home page, then open it and
move all apps out to that empty home screen. When you are done close all apps
and do a reboot of the phone, then put two apps back together so a folder is
created, rename it the correct way and see if this fixes the problem. If not, I
would once again move the apps out and get rid of the folder, then instead of
doing a regular reboot by turning off the phone, do a hard reset by holding the
power and home button together for about 6 seconds. After the phone
reboots, create the folder again, rename it and see if that fixed it.
If none of this works you may want to contact Apple Accessibility and ask if
they know of a solution and, if not, send an email reporting this as a bug.

Sieghard

Hi Sieghard,

Thanks for your response. I was able to rename folders in the way you mention,
but somehow I am still having the issue that apparently resulted from how I
originally tried to rename the folder.

The name I had given my folder was "Cooking". Even though I have deleted that
folder, it still says "Cooking" before the first app name when I open any
folder, before saying "Page 1 of 4" on my home screen, etc. Also, even though
I had originally renamed the folder on my iPad, this behavior has propogated
itself to my iPhone as well.

Do you have any thoughts as to how I can stop Voiceover from saying the word
"Cooking" where it should not? It is a bit distracting.

Thanks again for your help.

Pam

Subject: RE: Strange Behavior After Labeling a Folder

Hi Pamela,

Not sure what is causing this, but you don't have to use the custom label
feature to rename a folder. You can just open the folder, double tap and hold
on any of the apps inside said folder and then find the folder name by swiping
all the way left, double tap to get into the folder name edit field, then
delete what's there and type in anything you like. If you want an app name to
read differently you have to use custom labels, but folder names can be
edited/renamed.

Sieghard

Subject: Strange Behavior After Labeling a Folder

Hi All,

I am wondering if anyone has run into the following and can give me any help in
fixing it.

I had created a folder on my iPad and did the two finger double tap and hold to
give it a custom label. The label I gave it was "Cooking". When I exited the
folder, I noticed it was now saying "Cooking" before saying the first app name
in other folders, before saying the name of the first app on my home sdcreen,
before saying "Page 1 of 4", etc. This behavior is now also happening on my
iPhone 6.

I tried deleting the label, removing the cooking folder, and restarting my
iPad, but nothing seems to help.

Can anyone tell me where I went wrong or how to fix this?

Thanks,
Pam

Hi Folks,

I bought this app just to give it a try and I can't really make heads or
tails of it. I start it and hit the getting started button and there is a
thing that says drag take photo to the right and one that says take photo
action. I can't seem to get past this. Is there a podcast or something
anywhere showing some examples of how this works? Thanks.

Sieghard and others,

I appreciate the comments and what I'm haring is sort of what I expected
when I started the thread.

I find it's much easier to make sure I've got all my contacts I regularly
call set up appropriately and I simply ask Siri to call their mobile or
other appropriate number and this works swimmingly about 98% of the time. I
wouldn't think using Workflow for something like this would benefit me.

I'm sure the app is very accessible and should be applauded for that and
hopefully serve as an incentive for other developers to follow suit. I was a
bit surprised that AppleVis chose it as the top app for receipt of its 2015
Golden Apple award because my sense from traffic on this list when the app
came out which has been further supported by this thread is that folks are
having a difficult time finding a use for the app.

I'm always receptive to new ideas and hope folks will continue to post if
they come up with a convenient use of Workflow.

Subject: RE: Uses of Workflow App?

I'm sure for some users the Workflow app is great, but some of the examples
I have read sound to me like they are not a big time saver. For example,
using speed dial icons on the home screen is theoretically OK, but my first
home screen is filled with the apps I use most often and if I put Speed Dial
icons in a folder or on the second home screen, then I have to perform an
action first to get to them, e.g. double tap the folder to open it or swipe
to get to the second home screen. In this case I may as well double tap the
Phone icon and if my most used people are in the Favorites and this is where
I was when I closed the phone app, I basically have access to speed dials
(the entries in my favorites) after performing a single double tap on the
Phone icon which I can find super fast as it is in the bottom left corner of
the screen.

If I need access to a recording on my computer, I use Dropvox. I can set the
app to start recording when I open it so all I have to do is open the app,
then when I'm done I have to double tap to stop the recording, but then it
automatically uploads to whichever Dropbox folder I specified so as soon as
the upload is done and the download on any PC where I have Dropbox
installed, I have access to it in MP3 format.

These are just two examples, as I said, I am not trying to discredit the
app, but just as some others I personally have yet to really find a good use
for it.

Sieghard

I created a new workflow. I then added the record audio action to the
workflow. I added the copy to clipboard action to the workflow. I then
added the send email action to the workflow.

I am playing around with the settings for each action. I have the record
audio action set to record on tap and to stop recording on tap.
I have the send email action set to not show the mail composer, added in a
generic subject, and set the contact to my work email.

The main issue I have still is that when I click the start workflow button,
I then need to click the start recording button. When I do the second
button voiceover speaks and is captured on the recording.
I may play with setting the start recording option to instant or with a
delay. I am also going to look at if I really need the copy to clipboard
action, or if it will work without it. I am hoping I can get rid of the
need to click done once I am finished with the recording. As it is now

Have you configured the home button to turn Voiceover on/off with a triple
click? Also, if you are connected to WiFi you could bring up SIRI and say “Turn
Voiceover On”.

As for Evernote, I have given up on it a long time ago, they don’t seem to be
interested in accessibility and even if the iPhone app were accessible which it
was not in the past, the appeal of Evernote is it’s cross-platform availability
so unless they make it accessible on iOS and the PC (in my case) it wouldn’t
hold much appeal and of course for other users who have Mac computers or
Android devices accessibility on these platforms would also be important.

Hope this all makes sense. I miss learning new information from the group.

Re: Apple Watch and handoff

2016-01-07 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Nancy,

I made sure Mail was closed on my phone and then tried checking mail on my
watch and starting a reply. Mail didn't appear on my phone's lock screen or app
switcher, even though it played the New Mail sound, so I knew Mail was active.
I went into the Watch app, chose General, and verified that Handoff was turned
on. I double-tapped it twice, to turn it off and back on. Later, I closed Mail
on the phone and opened it on the watch. Again, I started a reply to a message
and checked my phone. This time, Mail did appear on the lock screen. I
double-tapped the Mail icon, and the original message opened, not the one I had
started by choosing Reply. So try toggling the Handoff setting; it may help.

Best,
Anna

HI Larry.
Not in its exact form, no, but there are a lot of things I've written
as well. Some of them were linked in the podcast post on AppleVis. I'm
in the beginning stages of writing up a series of posts having to do
with braille displays, but many of these will not be iOS specific. If
you're looking for a set of resources for braille with iOS, I'd
suggest starting with the link below.

Hi all.

I can not get talking goggles to work anymore, I really miss this app. I like
the video mode very much, because it recognizes the text on the fly, and it is
great when you are reading shampoo and stuff like that. I have just tried
again, but it will not work with my 6s Plus.

The app I found with the name AIPoly is called AIPoly vision,, is this the

Re: Benefits of Apple Watch

Hi,

There's no standard headphone jack on the watch, but you can connect Bluetooth
headphones and listen to music that you have synced to your watch. You sync
playlists from the phone to get music on the watch.

Lost iPhone 6S - insurances do sometimes pay

2016-01-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi all,

So, for those who didn't read this before, I was visiting my family who own
a working cattle ranch in northern British ?Columbia over Christmas. I went
for a walk at -28 Celsius on December 22 and after getting to the end of the
1.3 Km long driveway of the ranch I realized my brandnew iPhone 6S was no
longer in the chest pocket of my jacket. To make a long story short, I went
home and immediately tried "Find my iPhone" using my wife's iPhone 6 and
also tried to call my number. Calls went straight to voice mail and my
iPhone showed as offline and I guess it is not too surprising that the phone
would have turned itself off in these temperatures.

My brother, sister in law and several of my nephews spent hours and hours
searching the driveway, snow on the gravel driveway itself was compacted and
next to it was maybe 10 inches of snow. We even bought a metal detector and
searched certain spots where my tracks indicated I had walked into some
deeper snow but after a total of at least 12 or 15 hours of searching over
several days the iPhone remained mysteriously lost. There is, by the way, no
way somebody may have found it and taken it because the ranch is very remote
and nobody else drove along that driveway.

I guess there is a small chance my new guide dog who was running around
off-leash found it on the ground and thinking it was a toy or something
picked it up and after carrying it off a ways may have dropped it.

Anyhow, now that the holidays are over, I contacted my insurance broker
since I added a small add-on policy to my home insurance which is supposed
to cover my iPhone in case of loss or theft which are situations where Apple
Care will do nothing for you. I added this policy a few years ago when I
travelled to the Philippines quite a bit to visit my then girl-friend and
now wife because in countries like this phone theft especially of an iPhone
is very common. The policy is I think about $30 a year and has a $100
deductable.

I explained the situation to my insurance broker, they called the insurance
company and registered a claim, a few hours later I received a call from a
very friendly young lady to whom I explained everything again while she was
recording it and taking notes. Once that was done she told me right then and
there that they would cover replacement cost of up to $1,029 which is the
cost of an iPhone 6S 64 Gb here in Canada.

I had bought the phone on contract for $480, but the insurance company will
cover full replacement cost and she told me I can basically go ahead and
order a new phone, submit the invoice once I have it and I will then get a
cheque for $1,029 + applicaple taxes and less my $100 deductable. She also
said I was free to purchase any iPhone and if I decided to buy a more
expensive model I would still get the cheque but of course anything on top
of what my 6S cost would be my responsibility.

I must say that I was very impressed wit the coverage and the service I
received. For once I did not feel like I was treated like a criminal which
sometimes seems to be the case when you try to claim something from an
insurance company who often will try to do anything so they don't have to
pay. After having had a chance to use my Mom's iPhone 6S Plus I decided I'd
spend the extra $130 and I ordered a 64 Gb space grey iPhone 6S Plus, of
course I also had to shell out the cost for a new Apple Care plan so in the
end it will cost me $300 or so to replace the lost phone, but still better
than nothing. Of course there is a small chance we may find the lost phone
in April or so when the snow is gone and since I also have Apple Care for
it, I guess I could theoretically get a replacement from Apple since I
assume that after 4 months in the snow and going through the melting process
my 6S won't work any more. If it still does work I'll be sure to contact
Apple to tell them how tough their phones are *smile*.

Just received a ship notification for my new phone an hour ago, so I should
get it some time next week.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Thanks,
Pam

RE: Uses of Workflow App?

2016-01-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I'm sure for some users the Workflow app is great, but some of the examples I
have read sound to me like they are not a big time saver. For example, using
speed dial icons on the home screen is theoretically OK, but my first home
screen is filled with the apps I use most often and if I put Speed Dial icons
in a folder or on the second home screen, then I have to perform an action
first to get to them, e.g. double tap the folder to open it or swipe to get to
the second home screen. In this case I may as well double tap the Phone icon
and if my most used people are in the Favorites and this is where I was when I
closed the phone app, I basically have access to speed dials (the entries in my
favorites) after performing a single double tap on the Phone icon which I can
find super fast as it is in the bottom left corner of the screen.

If I need access to a recording on my computer, I use Dropvox. I can set the
app to start recording when I open it so all I have to do is open the app, then
when I'm done I have to double tap to stop the recording, but then it
automatically uploads to whichever Dropbox folder I specified so as soon as the
upload is done and the download on any PC where I have Dropbox installed, I
have access to it in MP3 format.

These are just two examples, as I said, I am not trying to discredit the app,
but just as some others I personally have yet to really find a good use for it.

Sieghard

I created a new workflow. I then added the record audio action to the
workflow. I added the copy to clipboard action to the workflow. I then added
the send email action to the workflow.

I am playing around with the settings for each action. I have the record audio
action set to record on tap and to stop recording on tap.
I have the send email action set to not show the mail composer, added in a
generic subject, and set the contact to my work email.

The main issue I have still is that when I click the start workflow button, I
then need to click the start recording button. When I do the second button
voiceover speaks and is captured on the recording.
I may play with setting the start recording option to instant or with a delay.
I am also going to look at if I really need the copy to clipboard action, or if
it will work without it. I am hoping I can get rid of the need to click done
once I am finished with the recording. As it is now I click the start
recording, record my memo, then click the stop recording button. Then I need
to click the done button to get to the send email button. Lots of extra
clicking in there, but a work in progress.

Hi,

I just downloaded Talking Goggles again after not having used it for a while
and when I used it in video mode on a package of Knorr Chicken Broth, it read
out "Chicken" almost right away so it does appear to still work. Also, I just
looked it up on the app store and according to what it says there it was last
updated on August 13, 2015 and the current version is 2.1. Not sure why some
people have reported there is an update today unless there is an update in the
US app store and it may not yet show up in the Canadian app store. Fort hose
who had an update, can you check the version and what it says in the "What's
New" section? The /August 13 update only has one fix:

it may not it was indeed updated here is what it says for the "What's New"
section for the latest update from :

"Resolved an issue with the spoken voice."

Best regards,

I’m really interested in this app. Is it google goggles or talking goggles?
Also, if lighting isn’t good will the app turn the flash on or do you go into

RE: Uses of Workflow App?

2016-01-07 Thread Karl Smith
Hi Folks,

I bought this app just to give it a try and I can't really make heads or tails
of it. I start it and hit the getting started button and there is a thing that
says drag take photo to the right and one that says take photo action. I can't
seem to get past this. Is there a podcast or something anywhere showing some
examples of how this works? Thanks.

Sieghard and others,

I appreciate the comments and what I'm haring is sort of what I expected when I
started the thread.

I find it's much easier to make sure I've got all my contacts I regularly call
set up appropriately and I simply ask Siri to call their mobile or other
appropriate number and this works swimmingly about 98% of the time. I wouldn't
think using Workflow for something like this would benefit me.

I'm sure the app is very accessible and should be applauded for that and
hopefully serve as an incentive for other developers to follow suit. I was a
bit surprised that AppleVis chose it as the top app for receipt of its 2015
Golden Apple award because my sense from traffic on this list when the app came
out which has been further supported by this thread is that folks are having a
difficult time finding a use for the app.

I'm always receptive to new ideas and hope folks will continue to post if they
come up with a convenient use of Workflow.

Subject: RE: Uses of Workflow App?

I have the send email action set to not show the mail composer, added in a

The main issue I have still is that when I click the start workflow button, I
then need to click the start recording button. When I do the second button
voiceover speaks and is captured on the recording.
I may play with setting the start recording option to instant or with a delay.
I am also going to look at if I really need the copy to clipboard action, or if
it will work without it. I am hoping I can get rid of the need to click done
once I am finished with the recording. As it is now I click the start
recording, record my memo, then click the stop recording button. Then I need
to click the done button to get to the send email button. Lots of extra
clicking in there, but a work in progress.

On 1/5/16,

occasionally unresponsive space bar, ,and mutliple letters issue

2016-01-07 Thread Shermeen Khan
Hi everyone,

I have experienced the following two issues with all IPhones I have
had (the 4, 5, 6, and 6s+). One issue is that sometimes, when I hit
space, either nothing will be entered, or c or v will be entered. I
know that it's possible that sometimes I have accidentally hit c or v,
but there are definitely times when I suspect I haven't. Also, the
fact that sometimes I'll hit space and nothing will happen at all is
quite telling and very odd and frankly annoying.

Next, when I'm touch typing fairly quickly, I'll suddenly stop hearing
the clicks that confirm to me that letters are being entered, and then
after a short silence in which I continue to type the rest of the
word, the phone/screen will unfreeze and then I'll hear multiple
clicks at once, but what will be entered is multiple of a given letter
in my word, and not the whole word. So, for instance, if I intend to
type the word "revise" and this issue comes up, what'll come out is
something like "rev". Does anyone know what I'm talking about or
have suggestions?

Thank you. I appreciate your help in advance. This list is a god-send.

Shermeen

RE: Fixed my volume problem..was Re: iPod and Evernote

2016-01-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Sherrie,

Glad the information about the volume helped you, I and also others have
provided this tip many times over the last few years when somebody posted that
their phone was apparently no longer working or talking and while this seems to
be happening less nowadays, it still can happen. All it takes is having the
phone in a pocket or case and maybe the volume down button gets pressed
accidently for a while and suddenly your external volume is gone and of course
if you can't see the screen to confirm your phone in fact works fine, this can
be quite disturbing.

Sieghard

Thank you, thank you! I was having to only use my 6S with headphones or headset

fixed. The volume was all the way down. I will have to add this tip to my

I have had situations and know definitely this has happened also to others
where the volume of the external speaker for some reason goes all the way down
to 0. This may very well seem like Voiceover is no longer working where in fact
it's working fine except you can't hear it. Since external speaker volume and
headphone volume are independent from each other, it is easy to check this out
by plugging in a headset. If you do this and Voiceover works then Voiceover is
obviously not off and all you have to do is put the phone on the home screen,
then unplug the headset and do a 2-finger swipe down to get Voiceover to start
reading continuously. As soon as you do the swipe start pressing the volume up
button and the volume of the external speaker will start coming up and you will
start hearing Voiceover again.

2016-01-07 Thread Sherrie
I had not thought of a volume problem since the male Siri still worked and
the female VO would read the Siri screen. Everything was normal with the
headphones on. I thought It had stuck in headphone mode somehow when I
removed them.
So glad to know what was wrong and this time I saved it in my
troubleshooting files.

So thanks again.

Hi Sherrie,

Glad the information about the volume helped you, I and also others have
provided this tip many times over the last few years when somebody posted
that their phone was apparently no longer working or talking and while this
seems to be happening less nowadays, it still can happen. All it takes is
having the phone in a pocket or case and maybe the volume down button gets
pressed accidently for a while and suddenly your external volume is gone and
of course if you can't see the screen to confirm your phone in fact works
fine, this can be quite disturbing.

Sieghard

I have had situations and know definitely this has happened also to others
where the volume of the external speaker for some reason goes all the way
down to 0. This may very well seem like Voiceover is no longer working where
in fact it's working fine except you can't hear it. Since external speaker
volume and headphone volume are independent from each other, it is easy to
check this out by plugging in a headset. If you do this and Voiceover works
then Voiceover is obviously not off and all you have to do is put the phone
on the home screen, then unplug the headset and do a 2-finger swipe down to
get Voiceover to start reading continuously. As soon as you do the swipe
start pressing the volume up button and the volume of the external speaker
will start coming up and you will start hearing Voiceover again.

RE: Lost iPhone 6S - insurances do sometimes pay

2016-01-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Gordan,

Yes, Apple Care is basically an extended warranty, it gives you one extra year
of warranty on top of your 1 year and it covers also things like broken Earpods
and Lightning cables for a 2-year period. In addition you can get a new phone
even if you break your phone accidentally but if it’s your own fault. In this
case there is another fee, a deduction so to speak, and I think now it has gone
up a bit with the 6S or 6S Plus and it maybe $129 here in Canada. But if you
have a $1,000 or more phone this is still not bad. Last year I had my 5S in the
back pocket of some shorts I was earing when I took my dog for a walk along the
river. I slipped on some loose rocks and fell and in the process bent my 5S.
the screen didn’t break, but it pulled away from the frame along the top and
there was a noticeable gap maybe a millimeter or more. The phone still worked,
but of course over time dirt would have gone into this gap so a few weeks later
I was in Vancouver, I went to an Apple Store and at the time only had to pay
$79 to get the entire phone replaced.

Now because of the higher cost of the 6S and 6S Plus and the low value of the
Canadian Dollar compared to the US Dollar, the cost for Apple Care here in
Canada has gone up to $169. If something happens and I have to pay $129 to get
a replacement this means it basically cost me $300, but if I didn’t buy Apple
Care and something happened and I had to buy a new 6S Plus 64 Gb for $1,160 +
taxes (12% here where I live) it would cost me $1,299 instead of $300.
Typically I need at least one set of Earpods replaced each year and they cost
$45 here in Canada so in 2 years that is $90 which I don’t have to pay by
buying the $170 Apple Care program. It’s a bit of money, but given the cost of
these phones nowadays to me it’s a no-brainer. The two things it doesn’t cover
is actual loss or theft where you don’t actually have a phone to replace, with
Apple Care you need to bring in the phone with the correct serial number even
if said phone is completely broken because you left it lying on top of the car
and it fell off and somebody drove over it.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi there!
i was following this story but i must have missed the part you didn't find the
phone in the end and I was wondering what happened.
Congratulations for the 6S Plus, I'm using i and the phone is really great. i
was having some issues to get used to it. I was using 4S for almost three years
and the larger screen took some habit adjustments.
What is Apple Care plan? We don't have it in this part of the world and I
suppose it is some kind of extended warranty or something?

Hi all,

So, for those who didn’t read this before, I was visiting my family who own a
working cattle ranch in northern British ?Columbia over Christmas. I went for a
walk at -28 Celsius on December 22 and after getting to the end of the 1.3 Km
long driveway of the ranch I realized my brandnew iPhone 6S was no longer in
the chest pocket of my jacket. To make a long story short, I went home and
immediately tried “Find my iPhone” using my wife’s iPhone 6 and also tried to
call my number. Calls went straight to voice mail and my iPhone showed as
offline and I guess it is not too surprising that the phone would have turned
itself off in these temperatures.

My brother, sister in law and several of my nephews spent hours and hours
searching the driveway, snow on the gravel driveway itself was compacted and
next to it was maybe 10 inches of snow. We even bought a metal detector and
searched certain spots where my tracks indicated I had walked into some deeper
snow but after a total of at least 12 or 15 hours of searching over several
days the iPhone remained mysteriously lost. There is, by the way, no way
somebody may have found it and taken it because the ranch is very remote and
nobody else drove along that driveway.

I guess there is a small chance my new guide dog who was running around
off-leash found it on the ground and thinking it was a toy or something picked
it up and after carrying it off a ways may have dropped it.

Anyhow, now that the holidays are over, I contacted my insurance broker since I
added a small add-on policy to my home insurance which is supposed to cover my
iPhone in case of loss or theft which are situations where Apple Care will do
nothing for you. I added this policy a few years ago when I travelled to the
Philippines quite a bit to visit my then girl-friend and now

RE: Lost iPhone 6S - insurances do sometimes pay

2016-01-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Not true, if you accidently drop your phone in the lake while canoeing and you
can get it back Apple Care wil replace the phone as long as you pay whatever
fee it is you have to pay yourself. Maybe it's not covered with the normal
1-year warranty, but if you buy Apple Care Plus which is the correct name then
it is covered. The damage I did to my 5S last year when I bend it was entirely

RE: Strange Behavior After Labeling a Folder

2016-01-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Pam

Thanks,
Pam

Re: Uses of Workflow App?

2016-01-07 Thread Gordan Radić

Hi!
For starters, let's conclude the Workflow app is not made specially
for the blind comunity. It's made for the sighted users in the first
place. Sighted users are more concentrated on camera and document
editing than the blind and most Workflow features are based on
photos and documents and to automate the tasks which would usually
take sevveral actions such as opening a few apps, finding special
screens etc etc.
Automation is also good for the blind but unfortunately, common
tasks offered by Workflow are not intended for us and we can't
benefit much from it. The main reason as I see it for Workflow to
win th Golden Apple or whatever is it called is because there are
too many unexperienced users who simply don't know how to use their
iDevices.
Sieghard gave a good example for speed dialing and if user doesn't
have speed dials on the first home screen opening a folder or
sviping to other home screens takes the same time as hiting the
Phone app and choose favorite from the favorites list. Fortunate for
me, I have my speed dials on the first home screen and it's not
because I'm slow in finding the Phone app, it's just because I like
it and want it that way but Sieghard has the point.
Maybe it is easier for unexperienced users to automate their every
day tasks to spare some time but on the other hand by doing this
they won't gain any experience in working without automation. As I
stated earlier, I found Workflow useful only for speed dialing and i
couldn't find other uses of it which suites my needs. I don't
publish pictures on FB and Twitter on regular basis, I don't share
articles via mail with my friends, I don't have any specific daily
routines so automation offered by Workflow is just not for me.

I find it's much easier to make sure I've got all my contacts I regularly

I'm sure the app is very accessible and should be applauded for that and

having a difficult time finding a use for the app.

These are just two examples, as I said, I am not trying to discredit the
app, but just as some others I personally have yet to really find a good use
for it.

Hi there!
i was following this story but i must have missed the part you
didn't find the phone in the end and I was wondering what happened.
Congratulations for the 6S Plus, I'm using i and the phone is really
great. i was having some issues to get used to it. I was using 4S

What is Apple Care plan? We don't have it in this part of the world

Hi all,

So, for those who didn’t read this before,
I was visiting my family who own a working cattle ranch in
northern British ?Columbia over Christmas. I went for a walk
at -28 Celsius on December 22 and after getting to the end of
the 1.3 Km long driveway of the ranch I realized my brandnew
iPhone 6S was no longer in the chest pocket of my jacket. To
make a long story short, I went home and immediately tried
“Find my iPhone” using my wife’s iPhone 6 and also tried to
call my number. Calls went straight to voice mail and my
iPhone showed as offline and I guess it is not too surprising
that the phone would have turned itself off in these
  temperatures.
My brother, sister in law and several of my
nephews spent hours and hours searching the driveway, snow on
the gravel driveway itself was compacted and next to it was
maybe 10 inches of snow. We even bought a metal detector and
searched certain spots where my tracks indicated I had walked
into some deeper snow but after a total of at least 12 or 15
hours of searching over several days the iPhone remained
mysteriously lost. There is, by the way, no way somebody may
have found it and taken it because the ranch is very remote
and nobody else drove along that driveway.
I guess there is a small chance my new
guide dog who was running around off-leash found it on the
ground and thinking it was a toy or something picked it up and
after carrying it off a ways may have dropped it.

Anyhow, now that the holidays are over, I
contacted my insurance broker since I added a small add-on
policy to my home insurance which is supposed to cover my
iPhone in case of loss or theft which are situations where
Apple Care will do nothing for you. I added this policy a few
years ago when I travelled to the Philippines quite a bit to
visit my then girl-friend and now wife because in countries
like this phone theft especially of an iPhone is very common.
The policy is I think about $30 a year and has a $100
  deductable.
I explained the situation to my insurance
broker, they called the insurance company and registered a
claim, a few hours later I received a call from a very
friendly young lady to whom I explained everything again while
she was recording it and taking notes. Once that was done she
told me right then and there that they would cover replacement
cost of up to $1,029 which is the cost of an iPhone 6S 64 Gb
  here in Canada.
I had bought the phone on contract for
$480, but the insurance company will cover full replacement
cost and she told me I can basically go ahead and order a new
phone, submit the invoice once I have it and I will then get a
cheque for $1,029 + applicaple taxes and less my $100
deductable. She also said I was free to purchase any iPhone
and if I decided to buy a more expensive model I would still
get the cheque but of course anything on top of what my 6S
  cost would be my responsibility.

I must say that I was very impressed wit
the coverage and the service I received. For once I did not
feel like I was treated like a criminal which sometimes seems
to be the case when you try to claim something from an
insurance company who often will try to do anything so they
don’t have to pay. After having had a chance to use my Mom’s
  iPhone 6S Plus I decided I’d spend the extra $130 and I
ordered a 64 Gb space grey iPhone 6S Plus, of course I also

for the carrier insurance or home insurance in your case. You may
never need it, but you will sorely miss the insurance if you don't
have it at the critical point.

2016-01-07 Thread Scott Dollar
Hi Sieghard,

I am going to suggest and recommend for you to get a life proof case. Life
Proof case does have a life time warranty. The life proof case does protect
your iphone from water. It is only up to six feet.

Hope this help you.

Respectful,

Scott Dollar

Subject: Lost iPhone 6S - insurances do sometimes pay

I added this policy a few years ago when I travelled to the
Philippines quite a bit to visit my then girl-friend and now wife because in
countries like this phone theft especially of an iPhone is very common. The
policy is I think about $30 a year and has a $100 deductable.

I explained the situation to my insurance broker, they called the insurance
company and registered a claim, a few hours later I received a call from a very
friendly young lady to whom I explained everything again while she was
recording it and taking notes. Once that was done she told me right then and
there that they would cover replacement cost of up to $1,029 which is the cost
of an iPhone 6S 64 Gb here in Canada.

I had bought the phone on contract for $480, but the insurance company will
cover full replacement cost and she told me I can basically go ahead and order
a new phone, submit the invoice once I have it and I will then get a cheque for
$1,029 + applicaple taxes and less my $100 deductable. She also said I was free
to purchase any iPhone and if I decided to buy a more expensive model I would
still get the cheque but of course anything on top of what my 6S cost would be
my responsibility.

I must say that I was very impressed wit the coverage and the service I
received. For once I did not feel like I was treated like a criminal which
sometimes seems to be the case when you try to claim something from an
insurance company who often will try to do anything so they don’t have to pay.
After having had a chance to use my Mom’s iPhone 6S Plus I decided I’d spend
the extra $130 and I ordered a 64 Gb space grey iPhone 6S Plus, of course I
also had to shell out the cost for a new Apple Care plan so in the end it will
cost me $300 or so to replace the lost phone, but still better than nothing. Of
course there is a small chance we may find the lost phone in April or so when
the snow is gone and since I also have Apple Care for it, I guess I could
theoretically get a replacement from Apple since I assume that after 4 months
in the snow and going through the melting process my 6S won’t work any more. If
it still does work I’ll be sure to contact Apple to tell them how tough their
phones are *smile*.

Just received a ship notification for my new phone an hour ago, so I should get
it some time next week.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Hi. I saw that there was a paid $2.99 version of my tuner for the apple tv.
What does it do that the free one doesn't?

RE: Lost iPhone 6S - insurances do sometimes pay

2016-01-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Scott,

You are not correct regarding a “lifetime warranty”, Lifeproof cases have a
“limited 1-year warranty”. I am including Lifeproof’s warranty policy taken
directly from their website below.

In any case, my problem is not that my phone got wet or will get wet although
of course the phone I lost and which is lying in the snow somewhere will get
wet when the snow melts. The problem is that it is gone at this point and no
Lifeproof case would help me with that. In any case, I will never buy a
Lifeproof case again after I had one for my iPhone 4S. I don’t know how much
they cost now, but back then I paid $130 for the case and the belt clip which
you had to buy separately so, in other words, a lot of money for a few pieces
of plastic. After about a year and 2 months the little hinged clip on the
bottom which locked the top cover down broke.

I called Lifeproof, they asked for pictures and proof of purchase both of which
I was able to provide. I was then informed that I was past the one year
warranty period and that this would not be covered, sorry about that. I told
the rather rude representative I spoke with that I am a very loyal iPhone
customer and likely would buy many more models of iPhones, but that I would
certainly never again buy anything made by Lifeproof and also would not
recommend their cases to anybody. I have and will continue to keep this promise
since this was about as poor a customer service experience as I could have and
there are other good options out there.

I don’t require a fully waterproof case and if I did I would want one which
allows me to take my iPhone scuba diving so it would have to be rated for that.
