Using my iPodTouch to make a Video?

2016-06-06 Thread Dani Pagador
Hi, Everyone.
I have my iPodTouch on a mount, and wanted to use it to make a video
for class. Any tips, tricks, or ideas for how to do this effectively
as a totally blind person?

Thanks,
Dani

Re: Siri, YouTube

2016-06-06 Thread Jewel
Karen: is that Siri or voice-over? can also make a right hash of reading. I
play Sporcle's Word
Ladder game a lot, and have found that, for me at least, it is essential to
flick my way through a
clue to ascertain if what voice-over/Siri seemed to be saying was, in point of
fact, the clue, and,
very often, it was nowhere near it.

Yes, it does get things wrong although I assume if you had perfect
pronunciation and clear speech
there wouldn't be many mistakes. If, for example, I dictate in German which is
my first language it
is almost perfect, but then again German spelling is also a lot simpler than
English spelling since
typically there aren't two or sometimes maybe even 3 different ways to spell
certain words as in
English. For example, "there" and "their", "hear" and "here", "bear" and "bare"
etc. Anyhow, I did
say " except for any potential mistakes" and I definitely don't want to defend
SIRI because
sometimes it really does interpret what you say in interesting ways and I think
we all hope for
major improvements both with dictation and especially with what queries SIRI
can answer and how it
can handle more compound queries.

Sieghard

Whenever you are dictating it's like you are writing the information, except
for any potential

but it is just voice

dictate a phrase or
whatever and you are in the Youtube search box then of course whatever is found
is up to how Youtube

If you use SIRI and ask "When was Albert Einstein's birthday" or something
similar the answer
depends on what sources SIRI has available and is checking for answers. Here
SIRI is not as good as
other virtual assistants such as the one from Google which seems to come up

Re: 2 questions, regarding Bard

2016-06-06 Thread Chris Chaffin

One thing I do when I am listening to something and do not want the sounds of
notifications to bother me, I just hit the mute switch on the side of my phone.
That way I do not hear all of the notification sounds and I do not have to
worry about those sounds lowering the volume of my book.
There are other things that you can do, but this is just what I do.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Question about the Xfinity My Account iOS app

2016-06-06 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
If anyone here uses this app I’ve a question about its latest version. It used
to be that upon launching the app in its main screen where it’d display your
account user name your first name and your current balance along with your
nearest service center it’d also display an element that’d say something to the
affect of no outages reported need to report an outage thus giving you the
means to do so.
I’m no longer seeing this references to outages or reporting them on the
account tab of this app. Thus I’m wondering have they hidden it somewhere else
or am I just crazy and missing it somewhere?
Thanks bunches for any light shed on this for me.
Robin

RE: Search for cell network under system services, what is it?

2016-06-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, it is on all phones and if you use the 4-finger single tap to go all the
way to the bottom in Settings > Privacy > Location Services you do have to
swipe left 3 times to get to System Services.
The last 3 items explain what the meaning of various coloured icons is, but as
Voiceover users you don't have to worry aboutthat as Voiceover announces what
for sighted people is indicated by colours or an outlined icon.

I have an iPhone 4S, and I see System Services near the bottom of the Location

It is not spam. I am in Canada, but a simple Google search for "T-Mobile

I have seen several articles in the tech press this morning talking about the
latest publicity stunt from T-Mobile, this one being offers of various free
goodies to subscribers. You need an app called T mobile Tuesdays. One article I
saw even had an App Store link. But when I tried the link, it took me exactly
know where. So I tried searching in the app store myself. Same thing, no
results. Has anyone actually seeing this T mobile Tuesdays app? It is supposed
to be both in the app store and the Google play store for android users.

RE: which navigon app

2016-06-06 Thread Richard Turner
It depends in which country you live.

If you are in the United States, you can buy Navigon for your region, Western,
Central or Eastern, or by the whole United States package, or the North America
package that includes Canada.

As others will point out, Google Maps does a good job and is free. Though in
some cases, I’ve found Navigon finds things that Google doesn’t.

If you are in the United States, mapQuest is also very good, but they won’t let
third party apps like BlindSquare launch them, which is a shame.

Later,

Re: Losing focus

2016-06-06 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Yes, I know how much Apple developers get paid, and I also know that
Apple is the most profitable company in the world. I also have some
experience managing operating system releases, so I understand what goes
into balancing schedule, cost, resources, content, priorities and so on.
Apple, like any other company, has variables they can manage. There's no
reason bugs have to sit around for a while unless a company chooses to
let them sit around. Of course, as users, it's up to us to let them know
something needs to be fixed and let them know when it still hasn't been
addressed.

If you're saying that we as blind users, who pay just as much for our
iPhones as any other users, should be OK with our defects not getting
addressed because Apple has too many bugs or their developers are being
paid too much then I wouldn't agree with that. I agree that we aren't
the only users of Apple products, and we need to realize that Apple does
have a finite amount of resources and they need to prioritize the bugs
they're going to address. Not all of our bugs are going to be the
highest priority bugs. On the other hand, we deserve our bugs to get
addressed and prioritized just as any other Apple customer does.

I agree, but I also paid the same amount of money for my iPhone as everyone

9 months, so I think a certain amount of impatience is understandable. Also,
the number of bug reports is irrelevant to me. The iPhone is a high end device,
so a customer, whether blind or sighted, should not have to expect a lot of
bugs. Furthermore, Apple can address a large number of bugs in several ways.
They could put more developers on fixing bugs for example. This is a business
decision on Apple's part. Note that Apple is not unique in this case.

I have an iPhone 4S, and I see System Services near the bottom of the

Hi Mary,

The Cell Network Search has nothing to do with how your phone connects to the
cellular network or whether it connects at all. A Google search resulted in a
bunch of results, here is one explanation which is easy to understand:

Cell network search: Apple keeps a database of cell towers and monitors
reception in your area based on this option. It’s used to improve products in
general and it’s not really a necessary function, so you can disable this
feature if you wish not to share cellular tower information with Apple.

Wi-Fi Networking I am pretty sure does something equivalent for Wi-Fi Networks
and hotspots.

Even Setting Time Zone is not required as your phone also receives this
information from cell towers. I have turned this on in rare situations when I
travelled to Asia and for some reason the date and time did not seem to set
themselves. Turning it on would fix the issue and then I turned it off again
since it anyways would only be important if you travel across time zones. Here
in Canada or the US I have never found that the time was not displayed
correctly even with this turned off.

Sieghard

I took the advice about going into location services and checking the system
services under there and turning off things that you don't need. One of those
items is checking for cellular network services or something close to that. Now
that sounds like something you would want to do when you are signing up and
getting connected with your cellular network. And I think the advice in the
original post was that it could be turned off. But I wonder about what might
happen if you were on a road trip, say, and lost contact. Or even if you had to
reboot your phone or turn it on to airplane mode and then off-again. Wouldn't
it have to find the network? So, I turn this off but I'm wondering if that was
a good idea.

functions for anchor BT Keyboard

2016-06-06 Thread Ann Chiappetta
Hi listers,

Just got a great deal on a BT folio case and keyboard for my mini. It is
from Anchor and it is model TC840. I had some trouble syncing it but I do
like it. I researched the commands as much as I can without the manual,
would love any extra help with the option and FIN keys and for some reason,
I cannot locate the question mark.

RE: Comprehensive Analysis of Apple's Big Reveal from a Blindness Perspective

2016-06-06 Thread Merv Keck
Jonathan or anyone:

Is there an Apple TV 4 recommended app for listening to Mushroom radio here in
the United states?

I have an iPhone and of course could listen live on my PC on Monday. However, I
thought it might be fun to listen via the Apple TV fourth Generation if
possible.

WWDC is aimed at developers, so the presentation can get a bit geeky. And due

One thing we promise. We’ll offer you detailed, constructive analysis. This is
no Apple commercial. The team brings a range of perspectives to the show that

On our tech team for this show are:

Allison Hartley, so much of an Apple fan that she even includes the brand in

Steve Nutt knows his way around iOS and VoiceOver, but he’s a committed Android

Re: 2 questions, regarding Bard

2016-06-06 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everybody,

Thank you so much for the help. I really appreciate it. For some reason, I
could never figure out the answer to my security question, which was odd. But
it all got worked out anyway.
I called my local library, and I explain the situation to the nice lady I spoke
too. She said she could force a password reset and that I would get an email
with instructions as to what to do next. Which I did pretty much immediately.
I went and set a new password, that I know I won't forget

The only thing I don't like is the fact that I can't change the volume level of
the books, without changing the volume level of my phone. Didn't make my phone
so loud. When I stopped reading, or when I have to do something else. I know
it's a small complaint, and maybe it is silly. But that is my complaint. Noon
I wonder if I hook it up to my iPod dock, if that would make things better? I
would imagine so.

Anyway, thank you again. I really do appreciate all the help and support.

I have an iPhone5 with the latest iOS update. I'm wondering if the settings in

For

Hello everyone,

2016-06-06 Thread Terri Stimmel

Does anyone on here, have experience with the Charter cable app on their
phones, or the like?

I put it on my phone a while back, and it seemed a little better, than it had
in about a year.

I called and talked to 2 different people. One told me that she thought that
you could record to your DVR with the app. But she was not sure how.
Then she also told me that if you were out watching something on the app, you
could return home, and set it to go to your tv. But I do not know if this is
correct, either.

A few days later, I talked with another lady. She told me that I could not
record to the DVR, from the app. I told her this made no sense to me, because I
could see record buttons.
Then I asked her about the tv thing, and she said no to that as well. So I do
not know what to believe.

What do you all think?
Would you use the Charter app?
If so, what is it could for, in your opinion?
I was told the app could only be used on my WIFI network anyway, which seems
pointless.

Thank you for listening to all this. I really appreciate it.

Terri

Comprehensive Analysis of Apple's Big Reveal from a Blindness Perspective

2016-06-06 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Next Monday, Apple’s Worldwide developers conference begins with a big reveal.
We’ll find out about many of the key new features in iOS 10, the operating
system for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch that will be released later in the year.
We’ll learn about the name and feature set of the next version of the operating
system for the Mac, which may even get a new name. There may be software
announcements pertaining to Apple Watch and Apple TV, and who knows what other
surprises Apple may have in store.

WWDC is aimed at developers, so the presentation can get a bit geeky. And due
to limited time, a lot of information is flashed up on the screen in
presentation slides that are not spoken about during the presentation. To get a
straightforward, comprehensive analysis and summary of all the big news, you
won’t want to miss our special Tech Team presentation on Mushroom FM right
after the event.

One thing we promise. We’ll offer you detailed, constructive analysis. This is
no Apple commercial. The team brings a range of perspectives to the show that
will help you understand where Apple is innovating, where they’re catching up
and where they’re behind.

On our tech team for this show are:

Allison Hartley, so much of an Apple fan that she even includes the brand in
her own Twitter Name, @AppleAlli. She’s also the co-host of the Tech Doctor
podcast.

Steve Nutt knows his way around iOS and VoiceOver, but he’s a committed Android
user and advocate. If you’re debating whether your next device should be iOS or
Android, Steve will offer his views on how Apple’s announcements stack up from
an Android user’s perspective.

Heidi Mosen is an iOS user and tech geek. She also is unique on the Tech Team
show in that she has eyeballs that work. As already mentioned, these Apple
presentations display a lot of information on-screen that isn’t discussed.
Heidi will be taking copious notes during the keynote event, so she can answer
detailed questions and comment on user interface and other issues she’s been
able to see from the demos.

And I, Jonathan Mosen, will be chiming in, moderating the conversation, and
doing my best to ensure you’re informed and entertained.

The Tech Team will begin by discussing the big news among themselves, then
we’ll open it up for discussion to find out what you think. You can Skype us,
or call us via numbers all over the world. Details about those numbers closer
to the time. We’ll also be monitoring the #MushroomFM Twitter hashtag.

If you have an interest in tech from a blindness perspective, you’ll want to
set two hours aside to join the Tech Team. We go to air right after the
keynote, at 4 PM Eastern, 9 PM UK, next Monday 13 June. See you then.

Hi.
When you reset your password, there's a security question and answer
which only you know, because you selected the question and answer when
you first set the account up.

Re: Siri, YouTube

2016-06-06 Thread Deidre Muccio
OK, I understand all this, but I guess my question is a little out there since
you don't seem to understand what I'm asking. Or nobody else knows what I'm
asking either! I just don't know why Siri's performance is so miserable at
times when asking her to look something up or find something or answer a
question. On the contrary when I plug something into a search engine I get far
better results. I suppose these are two different systems of gathering
information

RE: T mobile Tuesdays

2016-06-06 Thread Rick Alfaro
They just pushed it out about an hour ago. It's definitely coming but needs
time to propagate.
This last uncarrier move I think is brilliant, specifically giving out full
shares of their stock to all their primary account holder accounts.

I have seen several articles in the tech press this morning talking about the
latest publicity stunt from T-Mobile, this one being offers of various free
goodies to subscribers. You need an app called T mobile Tuesdays. One article I

Actually, they are not in Settings > Cellular, these are location settings and
you find System Services at the very end of Location Services. First go to
Settings > Privacy > Location, then go to the very bottom and look for System
Services.

RE: Siri, YouTube

2016-06-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Whenever you are dictating it's like you are writing the information, except
for any potential mistakes SIRI will put exactly what you say. Dictation is
also done via SIRI, but it is just voice recognition just the same as when you
dictate a text message. Then if you dictate a phrase or whatever and you are in
the Youtube search box then of course whatever is found is up to how Youtube
matches what you said.
If you use SIRI and ask "When was Albert Einstein's birthday" or something
similar the answer depends on what sources SIRI has available and is checking
for answers. Here SIRI is not as good as other virtual assistants such as the
one from Google which seems to come up with useful information more often.

RE: Search for cell network under system services, what is it?

2016-06-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Actually, they are not in Settings > Cellular, these are location settings and
you find System Services at the very end of Location Services. First go to
Settings > Privacy > Location, then go to the very bottom and look for System
Services.

Well, I am in Canada, so that might make a difference.

I had issues getting stuff in braille as well, and the materials weren’t the
full package, as the sighted members paid for. Yes, it was the basics, and I
could use it, but.. really.

anyway, I hope you have luck with the app, and the program in general. It

Regards,

Mary

Thanks.

RE: Some Great IOS and Assistive Tech Podcasts

2016-06-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I would say one of the most obvious when it comes to iOS would be Applevis,
also Cool Blind Tech does a fair number of iOS related Podcasts although they
are not specific to iOS or Mac but a general tech podcast.

Hey all,

As a long time subscriber to this list I have rarely seen podcasts mentioned on
here. I thought I would put together a list of some of the great podcasts all
about assistive technology with an IOS and Mac VoiceOVer focus. Some of you are
probably aware and even listen to them so this list may not be for you, but I
am sure at least one person will find the list and the links useful. If not
just hit the delete key and disregard. Full disclosure the first podcast is my
podcast with my colleague Ed Plumacher and we hope you may learn something but
at least we think you will get a laugh out of it. happy listening.

RE: Siri, YouTube

Sorry if I am not understanding the question, but what does Youtube have to do
with SIRI or search engines? Youtube is a site to share videos, you can upload
or consume all sorts of content from the latest music videos to TV shows, but
it is not a general search engine like Google or Bing.

You can use Google voice search, but of course you have to first open the app
for "OK Google" to react, you cannot set it as a replacement for SIRI to

Moreover, I am wondering, if I could use OK google and google speech input

Re: 2 questions, regarding Bard

2016-06-06 Thread Chris Chaffin

I am assuming that you do not remember your log in information after resetting
your settings. If that is the case then I would recommend calling BARD'S
support phone number for help.
1-800-342-3688

As far as the volume, the Bard app uses the same volume that music uses. You
can use the up and down volume buttons on the side of your device, or the
volume control can also be found in the control center. To get to the control
center, just touch the status bar where the clock is located, then swipe up
with three fingers. The volume control is near the bottom of that screen. To
exit the control center, just press the home button.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Re: 2 questions, regarding Bard

2016-06-06 Thread Alan Paganelli
Your user name is your email address and only you know what password you used
to create your account. And of course,, you have to be approved to access the
NLS content.

I can access BARD constant from my Windows computer where I can download books
and then copy them to my stream 1 or directly from my stream II. My favorite
way though is via my iPad Air because it's speaker has better sound then my
iPhone 5S.

Re: 2 questions, regarding Bard

2016-06-06 Thread Michelle Bernstein
Hi Terri,

The volume settings for the BARD Mobile app is not located within the
Settings folder which is accessed at the bottom of the screen, third one
from the left.
Once you have downloaded a title to your Bookshelf, you open that book. On
my IPAD, I can increase or decrease the volume by pressing on the volume
controls on the upper right side of the IPAD.
I could not find a volume control section either within the settings
section of the app or within the actual book you are reading on the
Bookshelf.

Once you download the app, to sign in with your user name and password, you
first must agree to the service terms. You select the agree button at the
end of the service terms.
Then the usual BARD login appears. Unlike, at least on my pc, once you
enter your user name and password, you never need to enter this data again.

For future reference, in the Bookshelf option is the BARD Mobile manual
which is accessed through the Help Option.

Regards, Michelle

2 questions, regarding Bard

2016-06-06 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I was wondering, how do I go about finding out my user name and password, for
the Bard app?
Everything was fine, until I reset settings back a couple of weeks ago.

Also, is there a way to turn up the volume, with the Bard app? The volume
always seems so low to me.

Thank you,

Terri

Instead of going into Notifications, stay on the settings screen and just
keep going down until you find Dice World, you can turn on notifications in

Hello everyone,

I have a problem dude I do not know how to fix. In dice world it says my
notifications are off. But when I go into settings and into notifications, I
see nothing about dice world. I have gone into dice world itself, under the
settings, and I would says is about my cellular usage that is turned on
under there. So I don't know what to do.

Can anyone possibly help me out?

Thank you,

Terri

Hi,

If you go into the settings area it should indicate your user name and whether
you’re signed in as such.

the account is free and requires nothing of you to be used. It merely allows
you to sync your alerts across devices should you wish.

If it indicates that you’re signed in then you can set your alerts as you wish.
Under your profile if you set a home address it can make up assigning your
alerts easier. Once you’re in the alerts area such as severe alerts or winter
alerts and the like it’ll ask you to choose a location and offer you options
from that which you’ve saved.

This morning I went into it and attempted to set up the alerts and found the
area to do it. That’s when II ran into problems and confusion.

I toggled on the alerts I need, at least I though I did, anyway, but each time
I got this sign-up thing popping up. I tried to go back to set up the next one
and It reported what I thought I had turned on was still off, as I thought I
could turn on several and than go do the sign-up.

The sign-up process itself was a bit confusing, and I’m not totally sure if I’v
actually done it or under what password. The first time it said there was an
error and to try later. So I did a moment later and tried with same password
but somehow it reported I had put in something different. I accepted but now
don’t know if I have something to log in with or if I am correctly logged in.

So now I totally don’t know where I stand with the account or my alerts.

I really wanted to get these done quickly as we have a tropical storm moving
across Florida imminently. I know there was a Facebook sign-up option as well
which I tried and wasn’t sure I did correctly either, as I have an

Re: email from mp3 recorder attachment stuck as unsent

2016-06-06 Thread Richard Turner

There is a limit to the size of email attachments. most email services limit to
less than 10 megabytes.
So, you may have to use dropbox to share the recordings depending on the size.

Cannot get notifications turned on in diets world

2016-06-06 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I have a problem dude I do not know how to fix. In dice world it says my
notifications are off. But when I go into settings and into notifications, I
see nothing about dice world. I have gone into dice world itself, under the
settings, and I would says is about my cellular usage that is turned on under
there. So I don't know what to do.

Can anyone possibly help me out?

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Question about setting up email on iphone

2016-06-06 Thread Christopher Chaltain
This is all true, but there are still reasons someone might want to use
their ISP's email address, so we should all help Denise, in addition to
giving her this advice. I use my ISP's email address for things where
I'm not too interested in the email that goes there, such as emails from
my ISP, places where I need a backup email address or places that ask
for an email address, but I don't really want to add spam to my primary
email account. Sure, I could just get another free address from Google,
but why shouldn't I use an address that should disappear when I leave ISP's.

Hello Denise,

As a general rule, I usually recommend that people do not use the email service
of their internet service provider (ISP)--especially
the cable companies and phone companies. There are several reasons for this
not the least of which being that should you decide to
leave that provider, you will need to transfer your email accounts; this is to
say, you will need to change your email address.

This is just my opinion but my preferred solutions are gMail, Appple,
Microsoft, or a private remote email server.

Weather Channel appp; setting up alerts

2016-06-06 Thread Bill Outman
Good morning.

I got the free Weather Channel app over the weekend and already gave
permission to track my location and send me alerts.

This morning I went into it and attempted to set up the alerts and found the
area to do it. That's when II ran into problems and confusion.

I toggled on the alerts I need, at least I though I did, anyway, but each
time I got this sign-up thing popping up. I tried to go back to set up the
next one and It reported what I thought I had turned on was still off, as I
thought I could turn on several and than go do the sign-up.

The sign-up process itself was a bit confusing, and I'm not totally sure if
I'v actually done it or under what password. The first time it said there
was an error and to try later. So I did a moment later and tried with same
password but somehow it reported I had put in something different. I
accepted but now don't know if I have something to log in with or if I am
correctly logged in.

So now I totally don't know where I stand with the account or my alerts.

I really wanted to get these done quickly as we have a tropical storm moving
across Florida imminently. I know there was a Facebook sign-up option as
well which I tried and wasn't sure I did correctly either, as I have an
accountthere. I did get a gone button on that but didn't hit it immediately
and think I should have.

I need all this confusion cleared up.

Yes I agree. This is why I have an Apple account as primary, but also have a
