Waltr2? For Windows? That's news to me. I thought it was *only* for the mac.
Thanks for sharing. ANd no, that blind Apple representative wouldn't have
problems with iTunes on his or her mac, because it is 100% accessible on
there, and it will be because of their own screen reader VoiceOver. Lol! But
that's no excuse to not make it 100% accessible on Windows.

Hi Listers,
I have been in contact with the developers of a windows program called
waltr2.

Their site is
http://www.softorino.com
It will sync music, tones, documents and audio books to your iDevice
without the need for iTunes. It works very well and the program is
accessible, for the most part. You just connect your iDevice to the
computer and launch waltr2. You see your device, then tab once more and
open the familiar windows dialog box for choosing items. I put all of what
I wanted to transfer in one folder and selected all. It puts the items
where they should go on your iDevice.

It costs $39.95, and their tech support is great.
There is a 24 hour full trial.
I have suggested a way to import a playlist feature.
If you import movies, it will convert the file (AVI, MKV, and others) to
MP4 and transfer to your iDevice. Just go to videos and there it is.

I wish apple would fix iTunes. I have called them months ago and they said
that they will look into it. The blind customer service rep had no
problems on his mac. Lol.

Go figure.

If you have any questions about waltr2, just let me know.

Hello everyone,
Thanks for the input. I thought there might be some workarounds for
some of the problems. It appears that accessibility with iTunes in
windows has gotten worse over the years. I was just trying to see what
was possible when using iTunes with windows 10 after all there is the
need to sync data from the iPhone and iPad to one's computer from time
to time I can remember when some of us upgraded to iOS 10. A lot of us
simply connected our cables to our computers to download
I was just trying to find out whether I could sync my contacts and
other material such as photos and notes from my phone when using
iTunes in windows. I guess not. Thanks for all your help.

It would be interesting to know if the BlindTunes scripts make selecting

RE: Delete & remove in iOS

2016-11-21 Thread Todd Patkus
Julian and Rajmund,

Please be careful. You stated I am not an English native speaker. This is
incorrect.

Remind you, Mark the moderator already posted a note to all of y'all. Please
say no more.

As I read this exchange it occurs to me that perhaps Todd may not be a native
English speaker, so perhaps there may be a language barrier thus causing
something to be lost in translation. I don't see this as a way to excuse nasty
behavior, but, sometimes when words are not translated correctly it could lead
to misunderstandings.

Removing First Page From Home Screen

2016-11-21 Thread Joe
Hi, is there a way to remove the first page, the widgets page, from the home
screen? I'm basically looking for Spotlight Search to only pop up when asked
to present itself. Not sure if that makes any sense. Thanks for any help.

From Moderator Mark, to the List

2016-11-21 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am primarily posting this for the benefit of our newest list members who
may not be aware of our general list policies.

Earlier, in a different post, I requested that the thread with the subject
of "Delete & remove in iOS", be closed, in part, because it would appear
that everyone wanted to have the proverbial final word with each word being
more hostile than the previous one, so to speak.

Rarely do I have to make such requests, in this community, primarily because
our members respect the opinions of others even when those opinions differ.

Now there are some who struggle with the concept of agreeing to disagree.
These individuals will always have a rebuttal even to the most reasonable
arguments. Such individuals tend to disrupt the overall harmony of a
community in so much that they refuse to agree to disagree.

Be that as it may, it is each members responsibility to exercise courtesy
and diplomacy when posting on-list, especially when responding to a post
that may come across as being somewhat provocative.

In short, do not attack or post disparaging comments about a fellow list
member, on-list. More importantly, never, and I do mean never encourage
anyone to leave this community because, as Far as Cara and I are concerned,
everyone is welcomed.

If you have a problem with a fellow list member, I strongly suggest that you
(1) take a deep breath and (2) deal with that member, off-list.

I would ask that all of you trust Cara and me to monitor the on-list decorum
of members; and that you trust that we will not allow any one individual to
compromise the fabric of mutual respect we have created here.

Now, relax, take it easy, and have a wonderful, accessible week.

Most Sincerely,

Moderator Mark

RE: Latest version of iTunes with windows 10 and jaws for windows

2016-11-21 Thread 'Carol Pearson' via VIPhone
Hi Thom,

This interests me greatly and I'll be looking at it more closely as soon as I
can. What are you saying  by your comment that it works wel, for the most part?
What doesn't work properly and is the software provider going to fix it any
time soon?

It seems that, even if we don't get a good version of iTunares we're probably
going to see some alternatives and that can't be a bad thing. Personally, I
just don't want to bother with iTunes any more because, as soon as you get just
a little bit used to a new version with all the things that do and do not work,
it's changed again! I certainly want to transfer to and from my phone. By the
way, can you save to the program as well as put music etc into your phone?

I'll just have to look at it now, wont i!

I may also look at the other program menbbned in this thread, time permitting!

Anyway, I'll look forward to any further comments you may be able to make and
will be pleased to get in touch with you once I've purchased.

Accessible Roku is coming

2016-11-21 Thread Mary Otten
Roku is rolling out a firmware update for their current products, such as the
streaming stick, which is presently on sale at both Best Buy and Amazon for
$34.99. When updated, these products will feature and audio guide, which is
supposed to enable blind people being able to navigate the system via a screen
reader. The firmware is supposed to be available for all of the current devices
by mid December according to Roku. Why is this relevant to this list? There is
an iPhone app for Roku devices. One of the things this app lets you do is voice
search. You can't do a voice search with the remote that comes with the cheaper
Roku was such as the express or the streaming stick. You may be able to do
other things with the iPhone app as well, such as navigate the system. I have
no idea if it's accessible on the iPhone. And I would be willing to bet that
once you open an app on the system such as Netflix or the Amazon app, it might
not be accessible. They're only talking about the menu system and navigating
around the screen, rather like what you get with voice view on the fire stick
or with some apps, like sling TV on Apple TV. So, it's hit or miss. But Roku
has a ton of channels. And some of them you just tap and play. So if this
interests you, go for it.
Mary

Looking for some apps, need help!

2016-11-21 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

So I am loving my Apple tv, 4th generation! I mess with it almost every
day. I am glad, and happy that I listened to some of you who suggested
that I make the transition.

As I have mentioned before, I do not have cable. I currently just
receive over the air tv. For the most part, I am fine with this. But I
do miss certain channels.

However, I haven't had cable for about 2 years now. But I enjoy certain
shows, and I like movies.

So to get to my point, and the subject of my message. I am needing some
help finding some accessible apps for the Apple tv. They can either be
free, or something I would have to pay for. But I really couldn't afford
to pay more than $10. Unless it was something pretty unique that I
liked. Then I might consider possibly paying more.

I currently have Netflix, Hulu, CBS all-access, and Crackle, which I
really haven't checked out yet.

I would really like to find some pretty accessible apps that show
classic tv shows from the US, or maybe even Canada. I would also like to
possibly find some apps that sho classic game shows.

I am also interested in classic cartoons, from the 60's, to the 90's.

I would also like some news channels. I'm not really in to business type
stuff. More technology, current events, international news, and some
cultural stuff.

No gossep type stuff. Yuck!

I am also hoping to find Apps for movies. I like some commedies, not
anything too sarcastic, or mean, or ugly. I also like romantic
commedies. I enjoy some children's movies, as I am a big kid at heart. I
enjoy action, and adventure stuff, and romantic movies.

I'm sure there are more. But that's what I can think of at the moment. I
enjoy movies from about the fifties, and up.

So do any of you think you can help me?

Are there any apps out there that exist for all this stuff?

I know it's likely a longshot. But I have to try.

I don't mind signing up at a website, or having to enter a code of some
sort. I will just need to know if I will need to do this for the app, so
I have sighted assistance for receiving the code. Well, reading it, that is.

Any advice, thoughts, or app suggestions any of you may have, would be
very much appreciated!

Thank you,

Terri

Hi, Brian. You may find the following podcast by Jonathan Mosen useful.
iOS 8’s Speak Screen Feature. Listen to iBooks with your Screen Locked and More:

If you'd prefer an article with instructions on how to use this feature instead

some features may not transfer from our AT&T network to theirs. Thanks for

Accessible Sudoku Apps?

2016-11-21 Thread Dani Pagador
Hi, Everyone.
Are there any VO accessible Sudoku apps out there besides BlindFold Sudoku?

I'll be going on a trip in the next week and will want something to do
while I'm on the plane or waiting at the airport. Sudoku seems like
just the thing, and I'd like to be able to work on a puzzle I'm doing
i.e., enter it in to the app and use the app to solve it.

I have a Braille display, but don't want to take out any more
technology than I need to e.g., it'll be either the iPod Touch or the
Braille display, not both that comes out while sitting aroun waiting.

Thanks,
Dani

Re: Getting an image only PDF into KN FB reader

2016-11-21 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Tom,
Thanks for the offer. I did actually get it into K NFB. And I did the OCR, but
it is a bunch of lab test results, which are personal anyway. And the OCR came
out in such a way that it doesn't make sense. I suspect they're in a table, but
they didn't format as such. So, I'll just have to wait until I get to talk to
my doctor. Thanks for your offer.

RE: Latest version of iTunes with windows 10 and jaws for windows

2016-11-21 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
I just wonder if Apple won't shut this down once it learns of it. Do you know
if it was developed in collaboration with Apple? Thanks, Keith

Waltr2? For Windows? That's news to me. I thought it was *only* for the mac.
Thanks for sharing. ANd no, that blind Apple representative wouldn't have
problems with iTunes on his or her mac, because it is 100% accessible on there,
and it will be because of their own screen reader VoiceOver. Lol! But that's no
excuse to not make it 100% accessible on Windows.

iPhones on Consumer Cellular network

2016-11-21 Thread Cher Bosch
Has anyone who switched to Consumer Cellular found that they lost any phone
functionality. I was told by one of their reps that there is a possibility
that some features may not transfer from our AT&T network to theirs. Thanks
for sharing your experiences.

Hi Mary, have you got an APP called Braigo? it tells you the image as well as
reads the text for you. you just try to save the PDF file into drop box and
with the help of Braigo get the file to read it for you, Braigo tells you the
image and reads everything very clearly. only thing you have to have your
internet on. Braigo is a free APP download from APP Store. Regards, Ruby

Re: Delete & remove in iOS

2016-11-21 Thread Julian

As I read this exchange it occurs to me that perhaps Todd may not be a native
English speaker, so perhaps there may be a language barrier thus causing
something to be lost in translation. I don't see this as a way to excuse nasty
behavior, but, sometimes when words are not translated correctly it could lead
to misunderstandings.

I have been in contact with the developers of a windows program called waltr2.
Their site is
http://www.softorino.com
It will sync music, tones, documents and audio books to your iDevice without
the need for iTunes. It works very well and the program is accessible, for the
most part. You just connect your iDevice to the computer and launch waltr2. You
see your device, then tab once more and open the familiar windows dialog box
for choosing items. I put all of what I wanted to transfer in one folder and
selected all. It puts the items where they should go on your iDevice.
It costs $39.95, and their tech support is great.
There is a 24 hour full trial.
I have suggested a way to import a playlist feature.
If you import movies, it will convert the file (AVI, MKV, and others) to MP4
and transfer to your iDevice. Just go to videos and there it is.

I wish apple would fix iTunes. I have called them months ago and they said that
they will look into it. The blind customer service rep had no problems on his
mac. Lol.

Go figure.

If you have any questions about waltr2, just let me know.

Anyone tried this and, if so, is it good and keeps the quality of the originals?

of his posts it seems he is a tad nasty to people who he wishes

white, Asian, in a wheelchair, have a guide dog, an
Indian-American or someone outside the country, U.S., there is no
need to be nasty. There is far, far too much of that going

very folks who are helping him. I have a hearing deficit also
and frustration with some parts of iPhone, but I lived when there
were no computers much less voice or braille displays. Talk
about frustration. I had to use an Optacon to read my whole
screen on my first computer at work. Couldn't even do that With
just a typewriter. I do not know his age, but it does come

Hi Shaf,

I may not agree with Todd's attitude, but you still should be careful when you
judge, you simply don't know somebody until you walked in their shoes.
I definitely also don't appreciate people calling others jerk no matter what,
those who do that are no better and often worse than the person they are so
quick to label with such words.
If I were moderator you would be off the list based on that statement.

Take care,
Sieghard

Hi Mary, have you got an APP called Braigo? it tells you the image as
well as reads the text for you. you just try to save the PDF file into
drop box and with the help of Braigo get the file to read it for you,
Braigo tells you the image and reads everything very clearly. only
thing you have to have your internet on. Braigo is a free APP download
from APP Store. Regards, Ruby

Hi all, in the native mail app on a 7 running latest IOS when I send from
another app through email often the sent item will be stuck in sent. Is this
normal behavior? I have not been able to send them from sent when I find them
stuck. Any thoughts?

OK. So the computer is POP, and the phone is IMAP. Thanks for that, that's what

POP has no access to the sent items. If, however, you send something off
computer, phone should see it in it's sent folder. If something doesn't quite
work, let me know, and I'll have a look around for something, maybe.

 Hi Simon,

What email service do you use? You must be using IMAP, Exchange Active
Sync (that is Outlook.com) or full Exchange (typically used by businesses)
for your mail to sync across devices.
Even gmail and Outlook.com accounts can still be set up as POP accounts
and this service does not support Sent messages syncing across devices or
features where if you reply to a message say on your computer it will also
show as replied to on your iPhone with the reply associated to the message
 etc.

 Sieghard

Mr. Ed, I was not aware Todd was deaf/blind, but having read all of his posts
it seems he is a tad nasty to people who he wishes to help him. I do not care
if someone is deaf, blind, black, white, Asian, in a wheelchair, have a guide
dog, an Indian-American or someone outside the country, U.S., there is no need
to be nasty. There is far, far too much of that going around. It is time he try
and make a point without attacking the very folks who are helping him. I have a
hearing deficit also and frustration with some parts of iPhone, but I lived
when there were no computers much less voice or braille displays. Talk about
frustration. I had to use an Optacon to read my whole screen on my first
computer at work. Couldn't even do that With just a typewriter. I do not know
his age, but it does come across as a spoiled child. Jonathan is never nasty,
and he has a worse hearing difficulty than me. Would Helen Keller be nasty? Me
thinks not!!! (smiles and hugs)

Re: question Safari on mac

2016-11-21 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Gianni,

You'll probably get more detailed help on the Mac Visionaries list, but here
are a few ideas.

Go to the History menu, and choose the Clear History option.

Open Preferences with Command-Comma, choose Extensions, and make sure the only
extensions are ones you know about and want.

Also in Preferences, choose Security, and choose which content you want.

I hope this is of some help, and encourage you to check AppleVis and the
MacVisionaries mailing list for more detail if needed.

Best,
Anna

Re: Delete & remove in iOS

2016-11-21 Thread regina alvarado

Mary and Christopher, excellent posts. There was a time when none of the Apple
phone apps could be deleted at all. So, this is an improvement in IOS. I put
all unwanted apps on the last page and went about my way. I also went to a more
GB. I think this difficulty can be dealt with easily.

Re: InstaCart App

Hi there, I actually just used it today and I do use it frequently. And I like
it. There is one thing that is not as accessible as I would like and that is
rating, but it is very easy to figure out, all you do is slide your finger up
and it gives a higher rating and you can tell that. I like the service, the
people are very friendly. It can be pricey but I am OK with that only because I
don't have anybody to help me go shopping.
Hope that helps.

RE: Delete & remove in iOS

2016-11-21 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi Todd,

Why can’t you just move these app you don’t want into a folder and put them on
the last page of apps. That is so simple to do and stop whining like a spoiled
brat that does not get his way. You need to grow up and just move the apps.

I know you are going to respond that you are not a spoiled little brat. So
let’s hear you whine again.

One other reminder. I knew of another person on this list that kept whining
about IOS all the time and he is no longer on this list. So grow up a little
and get off your high horse and except the facts about IOS as they are. Not
being perfect the way you want them. I am visually impaired and severely hard
of hearing and I want to be an airline pilot or a brain surgeon. Do you want to
be my first passenger or patient? So realize everything in life is not going
to be perfect for you.

Sieghard,

The point here is that Apple Inc. cannot expect everyone or as many as possible
to use all their apps like this. They need to change for the better.

Sieghard, I have absolutely no use for Health and Home , but do not say they
“cannot be” deleted. It simply makes no sense.

Think twice.

Hi Mary,

Such bad words and on a Sunday… naughty, naughty *smile*.

Health can indeed not be deleted and so far I found that apps like Phone,
Messages, Settings, Camera, Health, App Store, Photos/Videos and a few others
can’t be deleted as they are pretty crutial to iOS core functionality.

Home, however, can be deleted, I just tested it since I didn’t have anything in
it right now and it goes away.

My guess is that health and home can't be deleted because they're not just
simple apps. If you can't deal with that by putting them on the last page of
your device into a folder that you may name trash or whatever, I suggest you
get an android and see if you like that any better. This is such a non-issue.
Just move the damn things where you don't have to look at them and forget about
it. Why is that hard?

Unfortunately this is not strictly a Freedom Scientific problem, NVDA
isn't doing a lot better with iTunes and while there are a few scripts out
there which help a bit, there aren't any which make a huge difference. I
have a feeling that Apple would have to make some pretty major changes so
that companies like Freedom Scientific can get at the information and in
turn do whatever is needed to make it as good as it can be.
The same applies to the iCloud.com website, I highly doubt Apple is
implementing web accessibility guidelines/standards here since the site is
more or less unuseable for somebody who needs to rely on a screenreader.

Hi Victor,

Connect your phone, then go to your device and either to music, apps or
tones, check to sync selected items (in music or tones) and then try to
select artists or albums or tones or, in the case of apps, try to select
apps to sync.

None of this works any more.

Furthermore, I like to set my view to Songs and then turn on the column
browser so I can select a particular genre, artist or album. Jaws does
not read anything in All three of these lists (genre, artist and album).
OK, let’s say on my new laptop it doesn’t, on my old one it seemed to
sometimes work, but it would always say “L1” or something like that
along with whatever it read.

In a way I don’t care too much about it any more since now that I have
Apple Music I typically don’t sync my entire music library to my phone
any more, apps I can download from the App Store and in a pinch I can
manage my tones manually. I can still select to sync all tones easily
enough so my work-around is to have one folder with all my ringtones and
this folder I don’t add to my iTunes library. I then have another folder
and all tones in this folder I add to my library and thn I simply sync
all tones. If I want to get rid of some I just go to the tones library
in iTunes and delete the ones I no longer want and then resync. If I
want to add tones I copy them into this folder, add it to the library
again and then rsync.

If you can select tones and apps with Jaws 18 and the latest version of
iTunes you are the only one I know of who can do it and you really
should do a Podcast and show all of us how it can be done.

Take care,

Sieghard

it's inadequate braille support then I never would have said anything.
Since he made a blanket statement though, I guess I jumped in when maybe
the smarter thing would have been to let it go.

I think of myself as sympathetic to the deaf blind, but I admit, I don't

true when it isn't based on personal experience but rather just hear

Android, but for how I use my phone, I find Android is just as

Besides, you've said both that Android isn't accessible at all and

I've always found the Apple apps I can't remove from my iPhone to be
an annoyance and not a huge deal. If this is our biggest concern

My guess is that health and home can't be deleted because they're
not just simple apps. If you can't deal with that by putting them on
the last page of your device into a folder that you may name trash or
whatever, I suggest you get an android and see if you like that any

don't have to look at them and forget about it.

2016-11-21 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Christopher, Todd is Deaf Blind, so for him, Android is not at all viable.
It's Braille support as publicly available is well below par.
I have learned the hard way that there is little sympathy on this list, or in
the blind community as a whole it seems, for the needs of the Deaf Blind which
is why I have mostly stopped posting here. But I did want to chime in and at
least make this point.

My guess is that health and home can't be deleted because they're
not just simple apps. If you can't deal with that by putting them on
the last page of your device into a folder that you may name trash or
whatever, I suggest you get an android and see if you like that any
better. This is such a non-issue. Just move the damn things where you
don't have to look at them and forget about it. Why is that hard?

After you touch a status bar item, lift your finger away immediately and
then do the three-finger swipe up for the control panel or down for the

apple music

Hello Sieghard
You mentioned apple music in your email on the list. Can you please explain
what it is and how it works and what it costs.

Subject: RE: Latest version of iTunes with windows 10 and jaws for windows

Hi Victor,

Connect your phone, then go to your device and either to music, apps or tones,
check to sync selected items (in music or tones) and then try to select artists
or albums or tones or, in the case of apps, try to select apps to sync.

None of this works any more.

Furthermore, I like to set my view to Songs and then turn on the column browser
so I can select a particular genre, artist or album. Jaws does not read
anything in All three of these lists (genre, artist and album). OK, let’s say
on my new laptop it doesn’t, on my old one it seemed to sometimes work, but it
would always say “L1” or something like that along with whatever it read.

In a way I don’t care too much about it any more since now that I have Apple
Music I typically don’t sync my entire music library to my phone any more, apps
I can download from the App Store and in a pinch I can manage my tones
manually. I can still select to sync all tones easily enough so my work-around
is to have one folder with all my ringtones and this folder I don’t add to my
iTunes library. I then have another folder and all tones in this folder I add
to my library and thn I simply sync all tones. If I want to get rid of some I
just go to the tones library in iTunes and delete the ones I no longer want and
then resync. If I want to add tones I copy them into this folder, add it to the
library again and then rsync.

If you can select tones and apps with Jaws 18 and the latest version of iTunes
you are the only one I know of who can do it and you really should do a Podcast
and show all of us how it can be done.

Take care,

Sieghard

Unfortunately this is not strictly a Freedom Scientific problem, NVDA isn't
doing a lot better with iTunes and while there are a few scripts out there
which help a bit, there aren't any which make a huge difference. I have a
feeling that Apple would have to make some pretty major changes so that
companies like Freedom Scientific can get at the information and in turn do
whatever is needed to make it as good as it can be.
The same applies to the iCloud.com website, I highly doubt Apple is
implementing web accessibility guidelines/standards here since the site is more
or less unuseable for somebody w

welcome dominique!
if you are running version 9X on your for S, you shouldn't find it too much of
a learning curve when you get your 6S. I only have a six, so I don't have 3D
Touch, but I think that might be the main thing you will have to get to grips
with. of course, you can disable it, but it looks like a useful tool. however,
the 6S is larger than the for S, so it won't fit in your pocket quite as
comfortable E. personally speaking, I would love it if they would produce an
iPhone eight, with all its potential bells and whistles, which is the same size
as the for S, as that phone, for me, is the perfect size.

anyway, welcome to the list and I look forward to your contributions.
Good luck, Sandy
