RE: Question regarding Android, and Apple music

2017-05-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Terri,

As long as you have your Apple Id you can certainly pay your Dollar for the 50
Gb storage, but if you don't have any iOS devices and only an Apple TV I don't
know why you would want iCloud storage. It is for backing up documents and
photos to iCloud and not much else.

As for your question about Android and Apple Music you would be better off
joining an Android list, it is not exactly on topic for an iOS list. A few
lists were recently posted here, if you go to the archives and search for
"Android list" I'm sure you can find it easily enough.

Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: Question regarding Android, and Apple music

Hello everyone,

As I mentioned in an earlier message, a few days ago, I am giving Android a
shot!

I have nothing at all against Apple products. I am learning my Mac, and am
enjoying it. Also, I will definitely keep my Apple TV.

I just wanted to give Android a chance, and see what I think of it. Who knows,
I might end up really disliking it, and go back to the iPhone, rather soon.

But now for a few questions, regarding Apple music.

I heard, or read, that you can use Apple music on Android.

Is this true?

If so, how does this work?

I mean, how do you still pay for it?

And how do you get the Android phone, to recognize the App?

Would I still see my library?

Can I still download music, save music, and even purchase music?

I did put the App on my phone, the other day.

However, when I tried to sign in, and enter the code I got from my iPad, I kept
being told that either my user name, or password was incorrect. I know this is
not the case at all! I know that information, quite well.

Does anyone know what might cause this to happen?

I tried a few times, and there weren't any changes.

By the way, I would just use my iPad for Apple music. But I plan to get rid of
it, quite soon. And I don't always want to listen to music, over my TV.

I just don't get how all this would work. Maybe this isn't the proper place to
ask. If not, please someone point me in the right direction.

Also, I still get iCloud storage.

Will I still get this, due to having an Apple TV?

I pay a dollar for I think, 50 gigs.

Any help with any of my questions, will be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

RE: soundlink evolve +

2017-05-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Personally I think the number of Watts is only somewhat of an indication maybe
how powerful/loud a speaker might be, certainly in audio file equipment it
means very little. You can buy tube amps with 25 Watts which cost $10,000 and
here how many watts the thing has means absolutely nothing.
If you want something with lots of power/watts which apparently is very
high-end and don’t mind spending $350 US , here is one I came across when I was
looking for something totally different, of course as far as I can tell it
needs to be plugged in since 440 Watts probably won’t make for good battery
life:
https://www.peachtreeaudio.com/deepblue2.html
Here is the Amazon.com link, just noticed that despite what the company says,
it only gets a rating of 3.7 out of 5 on Amazon with 112 ratings:

Well the total watts put out figure is not generally listed in the manuals,
Most times, you’re hard pressed to find that spec. I don’t know why most
Bluetooth speaker companies play that game?
I know I’m old school, but I’d still like to know that particular spec on a
speaker.

I am loving this speaker. It works as advertised and I noticed that when I had
my iPod and my laptop connected via cable that I could set a separate volume
level for each device. It also did well with calls.

Kanopy

2017-05-12 Thread Deidre Muccio
Is anyone using canopy through their local library or university? I've signed
up for it and it's interesting with lots of great offerings, but not everything
is labeled and not everywhere is accessible using voice over. For instance, if
I play a movie and it comes to the end Or I want to stop in the middle I can
do all that but to get back to a search page is impossible unless it's a page
I've already bookmarked. In other words getting around the site and getting
into the main menu is impossible using voice menus. It's kind of a drag because
it's time-consuming to do all the work arounds.
I signed up using Facebook which I had a feeling I would regret. I'm already
receiving some kind of congratulations notice saying that I have one and iPhone
7. It somehow linked to Facebook and it has something to do with something
called free spin and you've got three minutes to to grab the thing and choose
the color et Cetra. And you can't get off that page there's no close button you
have to close Safari to get out of the damn window. What a mess that is.

OK on voice dream reader you want to go to where it shows headings and you can
choose to skip headings by either paragraphs or chapters or whatever you choose
to go through then what you do is go to where it says pause and you can swipe
up or down on pause depending on what heading you selected to move forward or

Re: A question about the Voice dream reader

2017-05-12 Thread Richard Turner

If the book is marked up correctly, the chapters are probably headings.
To the right of the play button is the navigation menu.
Touch that, and flick down until it says heading, or chapter, depending on the
book.
Then, touch the play button again.
Each flick down will now jump ahead to the next heading or chapter.
If the book has multiple heading levels, there should be an option near the top
right when you double tap on the headings, bookmarks and highlights button that
will allow you to adjust the heading levels shown.

Are there any Jaws for Itunes scripts? Back in I think 2011 I used ones
called BlindTunes which really made ITunes a breeze to use! I used
ITunes back then with an IPod Nano 5th Generation, and I'm returning to
the use of ITunes so I can use my iPhone 5S as an mP3 player of sorts,
bjut I'm kind of finding ITunes kind of a hassle to use, be with Jaws or
NVDA. If there's no Jaws scripts, are there any AddOns for NVDA to make
ITunes a bit easier to use? Thanks for any info.

Re: KNFB reader and ScanJig stand.

2017-05-12 Thread Richard Turner

The second generation has square legs so they do not get out of alignment when
you move the stand on the table as easily as with the round legs.
The cut out where you place the camera.
The microsuction tape on the top is wider and turned so it goes from that
camera cut out toward the back so more of the phone is sitting on it so the
phone really does not slide at all.
I was at a client's home who had just ordered it.
I wrote the creator and he said he had been working with a guy in Cleveland on
improving the stand. He did say he may have to raise the price to $15 because
the new legs cost more, but that he would ship for free in the United States.

Re: unable to use Siri to start KNFB reader

2017-05-12 Thread Richard Turner

anna,
TapTapSee isn't designed for text, though it is surprising some of the results
one can get that were clearly text recognition, like who an envelope is
addressed to.
But, But, if you are not dealing with paper scanning, and want object
identification, it is worth the wait sometimes.
As Chip mentioned, Digit-Eyes can also be a good way to go so long as you can
find the bar code fairly easily.
And, if the manufacturer included the package information in the barcode data,
it can tell you a lot. However, I don't find that as often as I'd like.
I think you will be surprised how much information the Directions For Me web
site has.
Good luck,
Richard

reading.
I’ll give Prizmo a try.
The site for directions you suggest sounds very useful as long as it has
enough data in its database; I look forward to try it.
Thanks again,

No, save your money.
Have you tried TapTapSee? It is free, and you can take a picture of an item
and it will tell you what it is.
Then, if you need directions, go to that web site
www.directionsforme.com and put in the product
name and you can find all of the information that is on the package. The web
site is designed for people who are blind.
But, give Prizmo Go a try since you can scan things for free and see how it
does. It is every bit as accurate as KNFB.

Hi Richard!
I don’t deal with paper documents very often, everything is pretty much on the
computer.
The biggest issue is reading instructions, directions, and even the names of
products like personal care, cosmetics, closing tags etc. Guys cannot
understand how important it is for a woman
Do you think KNFB will be much of a help?
Thank you very much

Bottles are difficult for any OCR app because of the curved surface. Also, the
widely varying fonts and sizes and sometimes lack of contrast makes it
difficult. That being said, if the label is not too odd, it can work.
Boxes can be OK but again, it depends on if the font is not too fancy and has
good color contrast.

If you are looking for the directions on a box, try the
www.directionsforme.com web site once you
identify the product.

It really depends on what you are planning to do with the scanned text
afterward as to whether KNFB Reader is worth the money for you.
If you want to be able to save documents, it works well.
If you just want to read and be done with it, try Prizmo Go which is free.
Then, if you want to be able to copy that text into an Email or word processing
app, you can buy the Export pack for $4.99.
It is a brand new app that I’m quite impressed with. It is certainly worth
trying out for free.

I also find that in some situations, one OCr app does well with an item while
the other doesn’t, so it never hurts to have a couple of them to use.

2017-05-12 Thread Richard Turner

Liz,
It really depends on what kinds of things you plan to scan as to whether KNFB
is worth the price.
It is very fast, you can add pages to a document and save it as one file, it
has a batch mode so you can scan a bunch of pages and then have them all
recognized at once.
It has a document stand mode so that after you initiate the first scan, when
you move a new page into view, it can automatically detect the new page and
take the next picture without you having to touch the phone.
If you plan to ever try scanning a book, the ScanJig is not my first choice in
stands.
Also, if you want good portability in a stand, it is a little bulky.
I prefer the Fopydo Scanning stand.
I just saw the second generation model, and it is really nice. Also it is only
$15.

Richard

apple ID, updates for Mac Mini

2017-05-12 Thread regina alvarado
I have questions that are about my Mac Mini but mostly about apple ID. If it
shows I have 3 updates in the app store, does it mean I am logged in? I can use
my ID and password fine on iPhone and iPad, but I cannot download updates on my
Mac. I find a place to put in my password, but it will not write. Is there
anyone who can help me with this, please? I thought if I was on iDevices
everything would automatically be on the others except differences between IOS
and OSX. I am running OSX10 and must need upgrade, maybe one of my three
updates? Thanks so much. Email is: reggie.alvar...@gmail.com so we do not
clutter this list with OSX stuff.

Does anyone know how I can link my Twitter and Facebook accounts so I can simultaneously post to both?

2017-05-12 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via VIPhone
Hi all

Apologies for cross-posting, but I'm hoping someone might know the answer to
this/be able to help me. I have a Twitter and a Facebook account, and I'd like
to be able to link the 2 so that I can simultaneously post to both. I'm using
IOS. A friend told me that it was possible, and gave me the name of an app,
TweetCaster, but when I downloaded it I found it terribly inaccessible with
VoiceOver. I then tried to look up how to do it online, and managed to totally
confuse myself with all the different methods that came up. So I was wondering
if anyone knew/could tell me of the best way/how I can go about linking my 2
accounts? Do I need to do it through websites?, or is there a more accessible
app that will allow me to do so?

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Eleanor

Youtube on the iPad

2017-05-12 Thread Cris Ali
Hello folks,
I noticed lately that controlling the forward or backward on the track position
is only fifteen second increments or decrements with each flick. In the past
it used to be ten percent of the length of the audio or video one is playing.
Both are not good. The ten percent increment/decrement was a bit too much if
the file is one or two hours long. The fifteen seconds is way too little.
My question is: How can I change this increment/decrement to my liking? Is
there a Youtube setting to control this?
Regards,

Cris

RE: Introducing Alexa calling and messaging

2017-05-12 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,
For me it is voice controlled. I don't need a phone or a computer to use it.
Which I do for skype and the other applications you stated. And I can use it as
a wireless intercom or to talk and message across the country or world without
picking up a phone or taking my focus away from whatever I am doing on my PC.
I just had a long conversation with the people on the Echo team at Amazon. They
are telling me that the new Echo show which is coming out in June will require
sighted assistance to set up. And because the screen is not a touch screen as
in a tablet but more of a display to include additional info to supplement the
voice interaction, there is no plans to include any text to speech option on
the new touch screen which is part of the new Echo show.
I was a bit disappointed because I was looking forward to getting a pair of the
new shows and using the video call features. However, since I'm having so much
fun with the audio call and message feature on the dot, I just decided to
upgrade to a pair of Echoes while they are on sale at Amazon for $149 US$ until
tomorrow.
For me, this message and call feature allows me to be social but still be more
private than skype and Zello and whatsup etc. Because I don't have to join
silly groups or advertise or knowing me, hide my online status while I'm
working.

Just out of curiocity, what is the big deal with this? OK, so you can now call
or message other Alexa users which I assume is what is happening, but then
again how is this different from using Skype, Whats App, Facebook Messenger or
any one of a variety of voip apps?

So is it just me or are others having issues getting the call feature to work
properly? I have the updated Alexa app on my phone but when I go to the bottom
of the screen, I don't see any communication or conversation tab. I am in
Canada though so that could explain it. However I installed an app called Flyp
which lets me make a US phone number which I did but when I went on to the
Amazon website it didn't text me a code to change the number. Really wish I
knew what I could do as I know a person who lives in Australia, which they
claim is one of the other countries other than Canada the Echo doesn't support,
yet he's got his working with calls. It just makes me want to grab my hair and
tear it out. Lol. Very frustrated.

Hello! I have been considering purchasing the KNFB reader for quite some time,
but I have not been in the position to buy the app. Now I am able to purchase
KNFB Reader, but before I put money in to this App, I would like to know how
people find this App. Is it worth the investment. Also, if I get the KNFB

available for KNFB reader? Any and all feedback will be appreciated.

Are used recently to read K cups and label from a 32 ounce bottle. I turned the
bottle around such that after several scans I came to where the directions were

the camera high so that could read what was on the plastic that would be
punched through by the keurig needle later.

Also, in additipon to use of OCR, you might find it more helpful to get a good
barcode reader for bottles and boxes such as Digit-Eyes (which I think is $10),
when it is able to read the barcode you usually get all the info you could want
(and quite clearly).

Re: unable to use Siri to start KNFB reader

2017-05-12 Thread Michael Feir
Eople wanting a free OCR option should have a look at Prizmo Go. Overall, I
quite like KNFB Reader's guidance regarding taking a good picture. However,
I was out for a stroll this morning and found a sign near my building.
Thought I'd give Prizmo Go a try and it actually did a better job than KNFB
Rader on that sign. It has a different approach to explaining the
circumstance of the picture if you use its guidance to line up the best
picture possible. The end result of my efforts is that I know that there's
a $5000 fine in Mississauga for people caught feeding wild animals. It can
make them less dependant and/or more aggresive. Don't throw those bread
crumbs people. Those critters aren't $5000 worth of cute.

Re: Dvorak keyboard layout

2017-05-12 Thread Nimer Jaber
I think the other annoyance of using a 3rd-party keyboard is that you then
lose things like dictation, and Braille Screen Input unless you switch back
to the iOS keyboard... at least that is how it seems to work for me. Is
everyone on list using the default iOS input methods? If not, what other
input methods have you tried and had success with?

Thanks.

Hello,

I will contact the dev. I had tried it, but ran into letters/words not
speaking, sometimes letters not being typed, letters not being echoed as I
backspaced, etc... but I will give it another go, and will reach out to the
dev to see if they are willing to make some improvements.

Thanks for the suggestion.

RE: unable to use Siri to start KNFB reader

2017-05-12 Thread Chip Orange
Also, in additipon to use of OCR, you might find it more helpful to get a good
barcode reader for bottles and boxes such as Digit-Eyes (which I think is $10),
when it is able to read the barcode you usually get all the info you could want
(and quite clearly).

If you are looking for the directions on a box, try the www.directionsforme.com
web site once you identify the product.

Re: unable to use Siri to start KNFB reader

2017-05-12 Thread Kathy Brandt
Are used recently to read K cups and label from a 32 ounce bottle. I turned the
bottle around such that after several scans I came to where the directions were
for my product. As for the cake ups, I read off of the top part, not raising
the camera high so that could read what was on the plastic that would be
punched through by the keurig needle later.

Hi Anna. Good for you for seeking advice before you put down that much money
for an app. I don’t have much luck with boxes or bottles with KNFB reader. I
use either bespecular or be my eyes for those chores. Both those apps are free
and work well.

God bless!

Hi Richard, same here, you just have to say “Open KNFB” and not “Open KNFB
Reader”. I have it on my main home screen so I usually don’t use SIRI to open
these apps since I can find them easily and quickly, but “Open KNFB” is shorter
anyways.

Well let me just say that we of the male persuasion; completely appreciate your
attention to going through the hassle of trying to read cosmetic and personal
care labels ETC, as even us blind guy’s appreciate a good looking lady Every
now and then, OK all the time!

I can’t imagine all the hassles you gals go through! As a guy myself, I know if
I pull any shirt and any pants out of my closet; it’ll damn sure match
perfectly. Cosmetics? No way no how period, the end. Can’t say the same for the
double X chromosome crowd! As they handle it with absolute grace and well
defined character. A hats off to the ladies of the blind persuasion!

Hi,

KNFB Reader works very well with standard text. It can be a little more
difficult with packaging. I believe it is due to the various sizes of the print
and fonts on most packaging. I tend to use Tap Tap See for packages more than
KNFB Reader. Also, you can use Be My Eyes. Given the last two apps are free, if
you think you would use KNFB to read enough standard print documents, I would
encourage you to get the program.

Have a great day,

Lynda

Thanks Richard!
TapTapSee takes forever to give a response and I’ve not even tried it for

Richard

Yeah, I agree regarding SIRI's strange behavior sometimes. If I say to text a
particular phone number, most of the time it works fine. But about one out of
ten times, she will say "You don't seem to have an app for that". Oh well...

Hi Les,

Try saying “Open Tune”, that did it for me.
Definitely odd, but typical SIRI nonsense.
I still can’t believe when I sometimes ask SIRI to call a certain business like
the Sears department store how it finds and lists all Sears stores in a 300
mile radius but not our local one which is half a mile away from my house. The
same goes for our British Columbia Liquor Store, it finds them in all the town
and cities some of which are hundreds of miles away since I live in northern BC
where towns are often far apart, but it won’t find my local BC Liquor Store
which is a 6 minute walk from my house.
I really hope in iOS 11 SIRI will get major smarts, but then again I did hope
that last year. Now, however, with the rumour that Apple will release an
Echo/Google Home type speaker possibly also with a camera maybe they finally
make SIRI a lot smarter.

Sieghard

these apps since I can find them easily and quickly, but “Open KNFB” is shorter

RE: unable to use Siri to start KNFB reader

2017-05-12 Thread Mike Ulrich

If you are looking for the directions on a box, try the www.directionsforme.com
web site once you identify the product.

Richard

RE: unable to use Siri to start KNFB reader

2017-05-12 Thread Lynda Ingraham

Lynda

RE: unable to use Siri to start KNFB reader

2017-05-12 Thread Richard Turner
No, save your money.
Have you tried TapTapSee? It is free, and you can take a picture of an item
and it will tell you what it is.
Then, if you need directions, go to that web site
www.directionsforme.com and put in the product
name and you can find all of the information that is on the package. The web
site is designed for people who are blind.
But, give Prizmo Go a try since you can scan things for free and see how it
does. It is every bit as accurate as KNFB.

Richard

the other doesn’t, so it never hurts to have a couple of them to use.

Well the total watts put out figure is not generally listed in the manuals,
Most times, you’re hard pressed to find that spec. I don’t know why most
Bluetooth speaker companies play that game?

I know I’m old school, but I’d still like to know that particular spec on a
speaker.

I find it very accessible. In order to have Bose connect play music you must
first start playing music from whatever app you normally use and then it
will continue from there. For example, I open the music app and start a
song. I then switch to bose connect and it will show me the controls, the
song title and the artist and album name.

I'm thinking about buying two of these because I want stereo
separation. Can anyone comment on the accessibility of the app. I know
some of the other Bose apps are problematic, but this one could be
better because it's not connected to music services etc. as I
understand it.

Have you tried the one in the app store called Dvorak for all? It is free, and
while it doesn't echo the words after you finish typing, it seems accessible to

If you contacted the developer, he may be able to make some changes to make it

RE: sound link evolve +

2017-05-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I assume this refers to the Bose Sound Link “Revolve +” not “Evolve +”. If so,
Casey, the place to get all the information from the horse’s mouth would be the
Bose website and the place where you are likely to see the best price and
reviews is, as always, Amazon. Of course you can also just Google it and you’ll
find both of those sources as well as many others.
It appears that on Amazon.com this sells for $300, get two for a stereo pair
and it sets you back $600. Yes, it’s bluetooth and Bose boasts 16 hours of
battery life, but the IPX4 water resistant rating is a bit poor compared to
what the Logitech UE Boom or UE Mega offer which have the same cylindrical
design and are in the same price category. The Bose bluetooth speakers sound
pretty good, but I think they are a bit over rated and others sound just as
good and have better features, a more rugged design or whatever.
If you don’t need battery and portability and you want to spend $600 get a set
of Sonos Play 3 which as a stereo pair will blow a stereo pair of Sound Link
Revolve + out of the water and also give you access to all the music in the
world both free and paid. Then maybe get an inexpensive waterproof bluetooth
speaker for enjoying a book while you have a shower or for bringing with you to
the park or camping.

Sieghard

am in Canada though so that could explain it. However I installed an app

Really wish I knew what I could do as I know a person who lives in

Hope you're doing well. And I hope this didn't go to the list.
If it did I apologize to all.
Thank you and God bless,

I set this feature up when my Alexa App was updated the other
day. I have tried out the messaging feature, and it is pretty
cool. I did a test call, and that works well.

Lol. Very frustrated.

 james,
You search for an app, by entering the app name in the search field in the
 app store.
 The app name is Alexa.
You set it up by filling out the information it asks for.
If that isn't enough to get you going, perhaps you need to find someone
who can walk you through it in person.
 Good luck,

 Richard

Richard,
Thank you! Omitting the word "reader" now works on my iPhone 6 running the
