Apple supports phones with new iOS versions for five years after the
first release. This means that updates will end for the 5s in fall
2018. this is why I do not recommend buying older phones.

Re: My thoughts on some of the announcements, was: Apple announces iOS 11 with new features and redesigned App Store

2017-06-05 Thread Kelly Pierce
I will be listening to the keynote in the next few days. From what I
read, it all sounded like a lot of me too. Other vendors are offering
person to person money transfers. the recipient will need to have
iMessage enabled and it will only be available in the United States at
first. I noticed that people still like to receive physical paper
money than a check or a credit card. People like to get tipped in
cash. Wen I pay the owner of my gym my membership fee, he is happy to
receive $100 bills in his hand and save $10 in credit card fees.

strange voiceover problem in safari on newest ios?

Hi everyone, I dont use safari on ios a lot but I did today. I found a strange
seemingly bug with voiceover when trying to read wikipedia. My normal language
is dutch but I have alex as well and that gets used with englis wikipedia. I
read wikipedia pages by swiping down with 2 fingers from top of screen so that
page gets read in its entirity. however with pages that have a table which some
wikipedia pages do voiceover totally freezes and i cant seem to do anything I
have to exit the app with the home button and can only read the page by swiping
right on it and not by using 2 finger swipe down from top.
I was wondering if others are experiencing this as well?
Greetings, Anouk,

Using a BrailleNote Apex as a Braille display and keyboard on an iPhone
5S, what's the command to quickly switch between Nav modes, like on a
qwerty keyboard one does with I think left arrows together? On the
website of

http://www.iaccessblog.com/braillenote-apex-ios-command-list/

which I use as a quick reference, I can't seem to find the command.

Re: My thoughts on some of the announcements, was: Apple announces iOS 11 with new features and redesigned App Store

2017-06-05 Thread Mary Otten
The new speaker does sound interesting. It's pricey, so it better sound a whole
lot better than anything else you can get for a lot less. And for me, the
Achilles' heel is still Siri. I know there's time between now and release, and
they did talk about deep learning or whatever other geeky sounding term they
come up with. So I suppose there is hope. But Google is clearly the leader
here. Apple has a lot of catching up

My thoughts on some of the announcements, was: Apple announces iOS 11 with new features and redesigned App Store

2017-06-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
They forgot to mention the new "HomePod" which is Apple's competitor to the
Amazon Echo and Google Home except that it sounds like it will be a much higher
quality audio experience, a true HiFi speaker which can work as a stand-alone
speaker or as a pair and I think this will be the true competition for Sonos. I
think Sonos has made a mistake by not making all their speakers and devices
Airplay capable and as somebody who loves Sonos and has invested a fair bit in
Sonos this is a bit disappointing. I don't necessarily see myself getting rid
of my living room Playbar, Sub and Play 1 set as rear speakers, but since I
bought a lot of my Sonos gear before any of the stand-alone speakers like the
Play 1, Play 3 and Play 5 came out, I have 3 Connect Amp devices in the
bedroom, bathroom and kitchen and those are connected to in-wall or in-ceiling
speakers. I could easily see myself replacing them with the HomePod (especially
a set of them in the bedroom and a single one in the kitchen and I would then
use those two Sonos Connect Amps at my retail business to drive the speakers I
have downstairs, upstairs and outside. Currently I use a single Connect which
is connected to my 22-year old Onkyo receiver and a 4-port speaker switch, but
if each set of speakers would have their own Connect Amp that would make it
even easier in terms of adjusting the volume independently and even playing
different things upstairs and downstairs.
At $349 US the HomePod is even substantially less than a Sonos Play 5 and from
the description I would hazard a guess and say that it may sound very good as
well with its array of 7 tweeters and a 4-inch wover. Of course the fact I can
simply say "Hey SIRI" followed by what I want to listen to is very tempting, we
have an Apple Music family subscription so the integration would be awesome.
One thing I am curious about and I'm sure we'll find out is how it would work
for different users, e.g. my wife of course has her own music and listens to a
lot of filipino music whereas my library and recommendations are much
different. Hopefully Apple will have something that allows the HomePod to
switch from one user to another.
Of course I won't have to worry about this because based on what Apple has
announced the HomePod will only be available in the US, UK and Australia at
launch in December this year and then it will come to a bunch of other
countries in 2018, hopefully Canada will get it some time in the first part of
2018, at least I have time to save up for it and who knows what Sonos will come
up with by then, but it is of course unlikely Apple will give third party
manufacturers the same access to SIRI and all that for a while since it would
mean less HomePod sales for them. I am also curious whether the HomePod has
bluetooth so one could connect to it directly with a good quality bluetooth
headset.

As for the big App Store announcement I was somewhat disappointed that they
didn't mention a trial period for apps and a rating system which gives an
indication about an app's level of accessibility.

As for the SIRI announcement I was also disappointed as it does not sound like
a leap forward and break-through upgrade, so they have better sounding voices
which might be nice since I assume these voices will also be available to be
used as Voiceover voices, but it sounds as if SIRI continues to remain stupid
compared to Google. I guess we'll have to see how these upgrades translate into
real-world knowledge and how well it will be able to answer a variety of
questions.

The Apple Maps update sounds promising especially if the new indoor maps of
malls and airports will be combined with iBeacons to provide accurate
directions for indoor navigation.

Hopefully the person-to-person payment option for Apple Pay will be available
anywhere Apple Pay is available as that would be a nice and easy way to send
somebody some money. It is interesting that they mentioned how they expect
Apple Pay to be available at 50% of retailers by the end of this year in the
US. Here in Canada we got Apple Pay much later, but because of our banking and
credit card infrastructure, Apple Pay is available anywhere contactless
payments are accepted which by now is almost everywhere. I don't know any hard
numbers, but I would guess it is well over 90% of places that accept credit
cards. Even small retailers like my store or the little german butcher shop
down the street have contactless payment terminals hence I can use Apple Pay.

Sieghard

I also use the First or today screen on my phone. I have a couple of
weather apps, my next appointment from Fantastical II, and the first 4
favorites from my Phone there. I find it very easy and convenient to
swipe to the today screen, go to the bottom, and swipe left to get to
a favorite that I want to call; verses pulling up the Phone app and
then going to favorites. Yes, I know, I could also tell Siri to call
someone for me, and sometimes I do that, but I prefer to either do it
from the today screen or go into the Phone app to call. It's just how
I use my phone. During the NFL season, I have the widget from my
sports scores app displayed so I can see all the latest scores and
what games are up coming.

Apple announces iOS 11 with new features and redesigned App Store

2017-06-05 Thread Gary Bowers
theverge.com
Apple announces iOS 11 with new features and redesigned App Store
Chris Welch
Apple CEO Tim Cook just officially announced iOS 11 onstage at WWDC 2017.
The next major update to the operating system running on millions of iPhones
and iPads will improve on the "core technologies" that power the OS and also
introduce numerous new features.
The first among those demo'd by Craig Federighi was synchronized messages
across iOS and macOS. If you erase a message on your iPhone or iPad, that
will now be reflected on your Mac as well.
Apple Pay is also expanding to include person-to-person payments,
positioning Apple to take on Venmo and Square Cash. iOS 11 will introduce a
Apple Pay Cash Card, where users will store their received funds from
peer-to-peer transactions. This money can be transferred to your personal
bank account.
Siri
Apple has made improvements to Siri that make the assistant's voice sound
more natural when responding to users. Additionally, Siri will now be able
to perform translations in various languages including English, Chinese,
French, German, Italian, Spanish.
A new "intelligence" feature allows Siri to make suggestions that you might
find interesting - like a news article - and be more predictive about what
you want to do next. Siri accomplishes this through what Federighi described
as "on-device learning." On-device learning is synced across your other
Apple devices but "kept completely private, readable only by you and your
devices."
Control Center
In iOS 11, Apple has completely redesigned Control Center, which is the
panel that users can swipe up to access frequent and important settings or
change songs when listening to music.
Indoor maps for shopping malls and airports
Apple Maps is introducing indoor maps for airports and shopping centers in
select cities.
Mall layouts will be available for the following cities: Boston, Chicago,
Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, San
Jose, Tokyo, and Washington DC.
Apple has indoor maps for well over 20 major airports as well, including
both US and international locations.
Speed limits, lane guidance, and Do Not Disturb While Driving
iOS 11 also adds new improvements to Maps when you're behind the wheel of a
car. Lane guidance and speed limits should help you navigate unfamiliar
highways, and a new Do Not Disturb While Driving will get rid of potential
distractions when your eyes should be focused on the road. Text messages
won't be shown by default, though senders have the option of replying with
"urgent" in cases when you really need to see something.
Apple Music, AirPlay 2, HomeKit 2, and multi-room audio
Sonos has some huge competition on the way. Apple's Craig Federighi said on
stage that iOS 11 will introduce support for multi-room audio between
iPhones, iPads, and a slew of third-party speakers.
Plus, Apple Music is adding a much needed social element, which will show
you what friends are currently listening to on the service. Like Spotify,
you've got the option of listening privately if you don't want to let others
in on your guilty pleasures.
A redesigned App Store

The App Store is getting its biggest makeover ever in iOS 11. There's a new
"Today" tab that will surface notable releases, and Apple is finally giving
the games section its own dedicated tab. There's a much bigger editorial
aspect to the store now, too, as users will find how-tos and other content
that pertains to select apps. Other refinements include the ability for
developers to directly list in-app purchases in the App Store - rather than
making users hunt for them in the app.
ARKit
Apple is building augmented reality directly into the core of iOS, giving
developers the tools they need to convincingly blend digital entertainment
with the real world.
Other
Here's the fun slide of other features coming to iOS 11 that didn't get
stage time. Standouts include screen recording, a one-handed keyboard,
FaceTime Live Photos, password autofill in apps, and more.
iOS 10, unveiled at last year's WWDC, focused on a major update to the
Messages app, and also included redesigned Maps, Photos, Apple Music, and
News apps. A new Home app for controlling HomeKit-compatible smart home
gadgets was introduced, and Apple began its work to open Siri to software
developers as part of iOS 10, as well.
Developing. Check out our WWDC live blog for the latest updates!

Re: Editing large chunks of text

2017-06-05 Thread Richard Turner

I would recommend Writer, by Voice Dream. It works great with gestures or
keyboards, uses mark-up language as well, is designed for visually impaired
users and is only $9.99.

I would second the recommendation to use a Bluetooth keyboard for major text
editing. I really like an app called Ulysses. It uses a Markdown language and
that lets you know precisely what your formatting commands will do. Also, you
can divide long documents into sheets which can be grouped. That lets you
change their order very easily. A pricy choice at around $30 Canadian when I
bought it but it's been worth every penny for me. One of the best apps I've
ever come across.

Do you have a Bluetooth keyboard? That might be better. I don't recall it
working that well with gestures.

Perhaps a Pages users will chime in.

yet in the IDB (IDownloadBlog) app to confirm this, and you guessed it, I'm not

Sieghard, can I just say that you're so good at all this? You seem to
know so much about everything, and then you use that information to
really make your IPhone work so well for you and be so customized to
your needs. I'm a comparative idiot in this matter and just thought
I'd point that out.

Re: Editing large chunks of text

2017-06-05 Thread Michael Feir
I would second the recommendation to use a Bluetooth keyboard for major
text editing. I really like an app called Ulysses. It uses a Markdown
language and that lets you know precisely what your formatting commands
will do. Also, you can divide long documents into sheets which can be
grouped. That lets you change their order very easily. A pricy choice at
around $30 Canadian when I bought it but it's been worth every penny for
me. One of the best apps I've ever come across.

My thanks to everyone who has replied to this thread. My German friend feels
more comfortable with WhatsApp than she does with FaceTime, so I'll give
WhatsApp a try.

Sieghard, my friend does not know you, but I passed on your best anyway.
Thanks.

RE: last update

2017-06-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Deidre,

I assume when you say you moved the "Home icon" to the last page you mean the
Home app from Apple. If so then this has very little to do with what Voiceover
calls Page 1 which is called the Today screen. I do find it useful, but I did
customize it to show me the stuff I want to see, e.g. I have it setup so the
information of my Netatmo Wweather Station is displayed there, my Scotia Bank
app can be set up so it displays account balances on the widget so I have those
there etc. This means instead of having to open Netatmo and looking at the
outside and inside modules separately I can just do a 3-finger swipe left to
right to go to the Today screen and get a summary of current temperatures,
humidity etc. at all my modules. The same with my bank app, instead of having
to open it and sign in, I can just swipe right if I just want to see my balance
etc.
I think of it as no different than swiping down from the taskbar to go to the
notification centre or up to go to the control centre, it's there if I want it
and if I don't want it or need it I don't have to go there. I think there are a
few OCD type personalities who are greatly offended by the fact that the first
home page is now calleD "2 OF 4" OR however many home pages you have. All I can
say there is so what, it's just that Apple chose to call the Today page page 1,
if you are anywhere and press the home button you still go to your first home
page (page 2) so it's not like you always end up there if you don't want to and
if you don't wat to use the widgets there just ignore it.

As for the app switcher I am not sure what the problem is, I don't have that
issue. I can close any app with a 3-finger swipe up or with a single finger
swipe up or down to put the rotor on "Close" and then double tap. Note if you
use the rotor gesture you don't have to do the one-finger flick again unless
you end up on "home" and swipe left again to close more programs, if that
happens you do have to swipe down or up again so Voiceover says "close"
followed by the app name. This is the same when you tap on the "Pages" button
at the bottom right in Safari. This brings up a list of open pages/tabs in
Safari, you flick down with one finger to "Close" and then double tap and now
if you have 8 more pages/tabs to close you can simply touch each one to focus
on it and double tap as the rotor will remain on the "close" function.
I have no idea what said "Hello" and why it said so. Maybe you can explain this
more.

Regards,
Sieghard

I have read here that the most current update will overall help your
phone work far more efficiently. Really? Is this a fact? I'm not so impressed
with some of the new features of the last update, and here we are onto 11.
Is anyone finding that page 1 Home thing of any use? As it is I moved
the HOME icon to a far page because I don't even want to see it.
I'm also often getting stuck when in the app switcher trying to close
out applications. Facebook is particularly obnoxious and I could not close it
without shutting down the phone. First it had to say hello then ask me to
either double tap to activate the program, or hit on the button before it would
do anything. I could not simply close it out. I'm not even sure the program was
open but why was it sitting there prompting me to do something with it? . I'll
give it up before I spend another minute fussing with it.
Please lighten my load of ignorance over another issue if I am off the
wall with this next comment.
When doing searches using a very old update on a 4S, when I do a
search, the results are solid and get me to a web site with real language in it
and not a whole lot of extraneous links. Is the arrangement of results when
doing searches with current updates likely to be different? Also even though
there is an option to choose Google as my default for a search engine, it
always brings up search results via BING. I remember on the old desktop BING
kept reasserting itself no matter what. I hate this kind of lack of control.
Ok, was that off the wall?

RE: Google Assistant is now an iPhone app

2017-06-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Shawn,

Well, I am sure all the canadian who are waiting for the Echo to be available
here “officially” your concern you may loose your american accounts may sound a
bit selfish *smile*.
Anyhow, I doubt there would be a problem, you could always use a VPN service
and continue to use the american account. There used to be a time when we had
very few choices here in Canada with respect to music streaming services, but
now that Spotify is here as well as Deezer, Tidal, Apple Music and I assume
Google Play Music I am personally not very worried about having to jump through
all sorts of hoops to get american content. It would be nice if there was a bit
more choice with video streaming, for th emost part that is Netflix here and a
lot of the content is not available here because of our copyright laws, but I
know that in time this will also change, maybe it will be a few more years, but
it must because people demand it and while certain american Presidents are
trying to close off America from trade, I think virtual borders will continue
to come down over time.

Sieghard

Hey. From what I've been playing around with in the Google Assistant, Tunein
isn't available. Only Youtube and Apple Music. Also, in regards to Sieghard's
comments, I'd be a little worried if Amazon were to start shipping the Echo
here in Canada. Sure, it would be cool, but seeing as I already have one, if
they do start shipping here in Canada, I might lose my Pandora and iHeartRadio
US accounts. It would be nice if Pandora were available here in Canada, but I
kinda doubt it will. And our iHeartRadio is crap compared to the US's so they
need to fix that before I'd be relaxed about the Echo being supported in Canada.

Also, ind typical Google fashion the google Assistant app apparently wants to
keep track of your location at all times even when you are not using the app so
it can collect as much information about you as possible.
It is interesting how there is a lot of discussion how Apple is totally missing
the boat on the smart speaker category, but one thing that isn’t mentioned is
that devices like the Amazon Echo or Google Home are only available in the US
and a couple of other countries, I believe the Echo is available in the UK and
Germany, but it is not even available in Canada and we only just now are able
to use Amazon Video here. If the rumours are true Apple may release a smart
speaker tomorrow or if not then maybe in September or October and it will be
interesting to see if Apple is making it available in many more countries. I
know not all Apple services have always been available everywhere, but I could
see how such a device might be available wherever apple also sells iPhones or
at least where SIRI is available since of course SIRI would be absolutely
required for this to work. If so and if Apple is finally giving SIRI the
necessary upgrade to bring it more in line with what Alexa and Google Home can
do then Apple could very quickly gain a strong foothold in this market simply
because the other companies didn’t bother to make their device available
outside the US and a handful of other countries.

Sieghard

RE: Editing large chunks of text

2017-06-05 Thread Richard Turner
It would help to know what app you are using.
I know you know you have to be in a place where VoiceOver says editing, but
even that can behave differently depending on the app.
Are you truly using 10.2, not 10.3.2?

Hi Jennifer, as richard said, touching the status bar than double tapping there
quickly get you back to the top. You don't need to fool with a pinch gesture
since iOS has had a text selection mode that you can have in your router. Put
that in your rotor, turn to it, then you can choose by flicking up or down to
select word, line, page. So you focus on the beginning of the text you wish to
select, moved a text selection in the rotor, then flick right and you will be
selecting text by the unit you picked. The text that you're selecting will be
announced. Once you're done, move the router to edit moved a copy, and you're
good. Much easier than the pinch gesture, which never worked well for me. Good
luck.

last update

2017-06-05 Thread deidre muccio

Re: Two VO gestures I just can't figure out!!;

2017-06-05 Thread Mary Otten
Good
luck.

I'd recommend you write to supp...@bookshare.org

I am in the United States and am not sure how to find that out without asking

Re: Two VO gestures I just can't figure out!!;

2017-06-05 Thread Richard Turner

To get back to the top of a list, you can touch with one finger in the status
bar, then do the one finger double tap and when you then touch on the main
portion of the screen it will be back at the top of a list.
Example, if you have 100 apps on your phone, and you are in settings, and are
at the last app, and want to get back to the very top setting, the quickest way
to get there is to touch in the status bar then double tap.

Hi,
4) She will be using her mobile data.
3) You may have to turn on and off hotspot, to be seen again, at
least I do with my note takers, although she could always just
plug it in with USB. 2) If she moves away, as long as she's
within a certain amount of range, the phone and laptop stay
connected.
1) She'll have to enter the key, if she chooses the wireless,
over the USB option.

the pinch gesture is opposite of what you know as pinching. You start with

Yu can read non DRM ePub files with Voice Dream Reader. Or, join Bookshare
and access their books with Voice Dream Reader.
But, as Mark said, if you are wanting eBooks from a library, they are not
accessible.
Bookshare, for $50 per year has more eBooks than you will ever read and many
are the same ones that you could buy through Kindle, Nook, iBooks, since
they get much of their material directly from the publishers.

As of today, their web site says they have "550,000 titles s
 and counting!"

Hello Husna,

While I enjoy audio books, every day on my iPhone via the Over Drive app,
currently, it is not possible to read eBooks via Over Drive when VoiceOver
is enabled.

Be that as it may, I strongly recommend the iOS Over Drive app to anyone who
enjoys Audible audiobook content, as they use the exact same files, though
the cover art may differ.

For example, I have downloaded over 30 audiobooks via Over Drive since the
start of the year, absolutely free. Of course, these titles are made
available via the public library system and, as such, one can listen to them
for the allotted checkout time. In my case, that is 21 days. Still, it
beats paying 20+ dollars or more for an audio book that I will most likely
only listen to, once. And of course, I can check out the books anytime they
are available or be placed on an automatic waist list.

Should you decide to use Over Drive for audio books, be sure to join as many
of your local libraries as possible so that you will have the widest
selection of titles. For example, sometimes, I will search for a title that
is not available in one library but is available at another.

Good luck and enjoy,

Mark
