Why the iPhone 8 may play hard to get - CNET

Why the iPhone 8 may play hard to get - CNET

As of today, Apple's flagship phone comes in two sizes. (We're not counting
the iPhone SE.)
Apple
For the past three years, each September has brought us two new iPhones: the
"regular" 4.7-inch model, and the "extra large" 5.5-inch one, with a bigger
screen and better camera.
This year? A long-rumored, radically redesigned iPhone may finally be on
deck. To picture it, imagine if the 5.5-inch screen of an iPhone Plus could
fit in the body of a regular iPhone -- but in a sleek new design without big
bezels to get in the way. Rumors suggest it could have an OLED display,
amped-up augmented reality capabilities and wireless (inductive) charging,
too.
There are just two problems: It might start -- start! -- at over $1,000
(roughly £760 or AU$1255). And even at that price, Apple may not be able to
make enough of them for you to buy one this fall.
That's why all signs are pointing to three new iPhones for 2017. That
fantasy iPhone 8 will likely be joined by the familiar S phones we see every
odd-numbered year, while the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus would look nearly the
same as their predecessors, while incorporating some under-the-hood upgrades
to keep them interesting. That could throw a wrench into any Apple fan's
usual upgrade plans -- especially since many have been waiting for the first
significant redesign in years.
Is this really going to happen? Apple didn't respond to our request for
comment, and we have very little hard info here. But here's why we think we
could get a trio of new iPhones this year.
Who believes this crazy theory, anyway?
Clever people, and more of them than you'd think.
In March 2016 -- before even the iPhone 7 was unveiled -- KGI Securities
analyst Ming Chi-Kuo (who has a solid track record for Apple rumors)
reported that the company was considering a new iPhone design for 2017 with
a 5.8-inch OLED screen, wireless charging and a glass back.
But Kuo said one other thing too, something many reporters missed: if Apple
couldn't get enough OLED screens for that flagship iPhone, it might launch a
pair of standard 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones as well. Three iPhones in
total.

There may be three new iPhones in 2017.
KGI Research
In the months since, Kuo has continued to beat the drum for three new
iPhones, but he hasn't been alone. The Nikkei Asian Review and Bloomberg's
Mark Gurman each corroborated the idea. But it wasn't until this July, when
a report in China's Economic Daily News warned of a delay for Apple's OLED
phone, that Wall Street joined the bandwagon.
At one point, we counted as many as a dozen financial analysts that agreed
that Apple was having problems building its new phone to meet its normal
September release schedule, and would either have to delay it or ship it in
limited quantities to start. However, Apple has since forecast huge earnings
for the September quarter, effectively confirming that some sort of new
iPhones will be released by the end of September.
But questions remain: Will all three presumed new models hit at once? And
how much will the high-end model cost? Because many of those aforementioned
analysts -- as well as respected Apple watchers John Gruber, Jason Snell and
Rene Ritchie -- believe you'll have to pay more than ever before.
Why can't Apple make enough of the iPhones we want?
Four letters: OLED.
It's no surprise Apple wants to add an OLED screen to the iPhone, to get the
deep colors, inky blacks and battery efficiency that display technology can
afford.

With an OLED screen, each pixel generates its own light... so when they're
black, they're off, and not wasting electricity.
Andrew Hoyle/CNET
But unlike most pieces that go into a phone, those OLED screens can only
realistically come from a single source. The problem: Samsung controls at
least 98 percent of the phone-sized OLED market, according to analyst firms
IHS and UBI Research.
Other companies like LG do produce OLED panels, and more are gearing up, but
no other firm can produce as many as Apple would need for a phone. Samsung
has a virtual monopoly on these screens, and there's no backup if anything
goes wrong.
Apple is so big that it needs suppliers who can provide hundreds of millions
of each iPhone part each year -- anything below those thresholds, and it
can't afford to use those parts at all.
And apparently, Apple isn't asking for any ol' OLED screens, either.
Supposedly, Apple wanted to build an OLED screen with a built-in fingerprint
sensor. More recently, Apple's HomePod leak hints that a face-recognizing
infrared camera may be integrated directly above Samsung's panel as well.
Both IHS and Korea's UBI Research say Samsung's OLED production for Apple
has been delayed, but not because Samsung doesn't have the factories or
manpower. They believe Apple's custom screen could be the culprit.
Samsung didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Will the price really be $1,000 or more?

7 drastic changes coming to your iPhone with iOS 11 - CNET
With iOS 11 expected to officially launch this fall, it's a good idea to
know just what you're in for after you install the latest and greatest Apple
has to offer to the iPhone. The new OS is full of small, subtle tweaks, but
there are also some bigger changes that will undoubtedly take some getting
used to.

Notification Center is no more
Jason Cipriani/CNET
Well, that's not completely true. It's still there, it's just that now it's
called Cover Sheet.

Cover Sheet looks a lot like the standard iOS lock screen and works in the
same manner too. Swipe in either direction on alerts to take action or clear
them. Swipe from either edge of the display to launch the camera or view
your Today panel.
Oh, and your notification feed will be broken up into Most Recent and
Earlier Today (Yesterday, and so on) sections.

No more Force Touch for quick app switching
When Apple announced the iPhone 6 ($370.79 at Amazon.com), complete with a
pressure sensitive screen, the company also added a shortcut to quickly
switch between apps by pressing on the left edge of the display.
With iOS 11, that gesture is gone. Go ahead, press as hard as you want. It's
simply not going to work.
Time to go back to double-pressing the home button.

Drag-and-drop isn't just for iPad
Jason Cipriani/CNET
Apple touted the iPad's new drag-and-drop feature when it unveiled iOS 11 in
June, but what the company didn't tell us is the iPhone has it too; albeit
in very limited situations.
In the Photos app, for example, you can drag a photo to an album instead of
tapping around.
Here's how you can try it: Place a finger on a photo until it starts to
hover. Tap on the Albums tab on the bottom of the screen (or drag the photo
to the tab). Then drop the photo in whichever album you want. Neat, right?

NFC is open for all
An example of the NFC prompt coming to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus with the
release of iOS 11.
Screenshot by Jason Cipriani/CNET
Apple is finally giving developers access to the iPhone's NFC capabilities
instead of keeping it locked to just Apple Pay.
As developers begin to release updates for apps, you will undoubtedly see
the option to scan NFC tags to view more information about a product or
connect to gym equipment, for example.
The feature will be limited to the iPhone 7 ($799.45 at Amazon Marketplace)
and iPhone 7 Plus ($979.99 at Amazon Marketplace).

Control Center is brand new. again
Jason Cipriani/CNET
When you swipe up from the bottom of the screen on your iPhone to view
Control Center, you're in for a surprise: The three-panel approach of iOS 10
is gone.
Instead, Control Center is a continuous column of buttons. You can hard
press on buttons for additional options, and add or remove items from
Control Center through the Settings app.

App Store has a fresh coat of paint
Sarah Tew/CNET
A long overdue change to the App Store is coming. With a more visually
appealing, interactive design, the App Store looks nothing like it used to.
The new design will highlight new apps and developers and looks a lot like
Apple Music. Only instead of songs and artists, it's games and apps.
Speaking of which, Apple has finally separated the two categories into their
own respective sections.

Screenshot tool is awesome
Jason Cipriani/CNET
The process of taking a screenshot, editing and then sharing it is getting
streamlined.
With iOS 11 installed, when you take a screenshot a small preview thumbnail
will show up in the bottom-left corner. Tap on it to markup, crop, edit,
delete or share.

Hi,

If your phone has 3D Touch, press and hold the Pages button. One of the options
on the screen that opens is "Close # tabs," where # is however many are open.
Double-tap, and all the pages close at once.

How to Get Siri to Say Your Name Correctly
By Sarah Kingsbury updated on 07/07/2016

Siri isn’t always so great at pronouncing names correctly. The AI is great for
calling or sending messages, but it’s incredibly frustrating when you tell Siri
to call Jaqueline and the AI searches the web for Violins. Luckily, you can
teach Siri to pronounces your name or any name. Part of the personal
assistant's capabilities is being able to learn. Whether it’s your name or a
friends, you can correct Siri’s pronunciation in a few short steps. Here’s how
to get Siri to say your name correctly.

To teach Siri how to say a name correctly,

hold the home button to activate Siri and then say, "That's not how

Siri will then ask you how to pronounce the contact's first name. Say the name
correctly.

Siri will offer you two or three pronunciation options to choose from. Select
the one that is the correct pronunciation.

If none of the options are close enough, tap Tell Siri Again to repeat the
process until you get a pronunciation you like.

Siri will then repeat the process for the contact's last name as well. Having
corrected Siri’s pronunciation, the AI should be able to say your name, or a
friend's name, correctly now.

How do you cloase all the pages in Safari

2017-08-05 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi Group,

When you have Safari open and go down to the bottom right side there is a
pages button. When you click on that there is all kinds of pages open. How
do you get rid of all those pages. They are web sites that I have gone to.
Any help on this would be appreciated. Also what is this page button for?

Mr. Ed

So I tried this, and it appears to work. However, when I click on find the
text he told me the number of matches, but would not let me pick which one,
or bring it to one.

We did find a send feedback and send a well-thought-out letter. Tried to be

Re: Seeking Suggestions for a good iOS Package Tracking App

2017-08-05 Thread Robin Frost

Hi,
I have both apps mentioned and like to run with both as I find that every
once in a while when I send a parcel to my Parceltrack inbox it doesn't
automatically appear in my package tracking tab. I also like having
redundant options in case one breaks even if temporarily. And Parcel does
seem to indicate package location in its push notifications whereas
parcelTrack hasn't yet for me anyway though I've politely requested it. but
I do like both apps and am glad both are available to me.

Subject: RE: Seeking Suggestions for a good iOS Package Tracking App

I also used Parcel, but now have switched to Parcel Track. My reasons are as
follows:

1. While the subscription for Parcel is not expensive, it's just another
recurring purchase. It's $3.99 Canadian a year or $2.99 US, Parcel Track is
exactly the same, but just a one-time purchase.
2. When I first downloaded Parcel Track I added a couple of packages to both
apps and Parcel Track seemed to deliver push notifications about updates
quicker
3. Parcel is limited to 100 packages as far as keeping a histopry is
concerned, not a big deal if you don't ship too much or usually delete
shipments after they have arrived. Parcel Track is unlimited.

4. Parcel Track is just as accessible
5. If you wish you can forward ship confirmation emails to a particular
email address which is assigned to you to have them automatically entered
into Parcel Track. This is like what ShipRack used to offer and I don't
think Parcel has this feature.

One thing Parcel Track at this point does not have is an Apple Watch app
which is available for Parcel so if that is important to you, then parcel
would be the app for you.

Best regards,
Sieghard

It costs something like $2.00 a year.

Hello All,

I would appreciate any suggestions you may have for a good iOS package
tracking app that can track UPS, USPS, FedEX, etc. I would like the app to
offer push notifications so I can tell when the package reaches various
stages in the shipping process. The app can either be free or paid, it does
not matter as long as it is VoiceOver accessible and easy-to-use.

Thank you,

RE: looking for input on any of the amazon devices

2017-08-05 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,
On the iPhone side, you just need the Alexa app. You can manage multiple Amazon
devices through the Alexa app.
To answer the question about the usefulness of the Show in relation to other
Amazon devices, that would depend on the individual.
I can think of several uses for mine if someone sighted had one. But I don't
really have a desire for one just now because I already have a Dot and an Echo.
And I don't feel a need to bring up YouTube videos that I cannot see by voice.
Or video chats I can't see. Or send video messages I can't see. I can do that
on skype. Laughs!
One good thing that amazon is doing though is that every skill that is being
developed for the show is being required to be functional for all amazon Echo
devices without video. So the screen is a bonus but not required for any skill
even if developed for the Show.

hi,
I have a couple of the DOTS, but would like to know more about the show. can
anyone explain how it works and what it does and if it is potentially useful,
tickly, with low or no vision in mind?

RE: looking for input on any of the amazon devices

2017-08-05 Thread Merv Keck
The Show is the newest in the amazon line of Echo devices. It is an Echo with a
seven inch touch screen. And it is accessible with voice view. The average cost
in US dollars is around $229. Chris G of Mystic Access did a podcast and review
of the unboxing and accessibility of the new Echo show.
I have an Original echo and a Dot. I actually like the Dot better even though
the sound is smaller unless it is connected to an external speaker via
Bluetooth.
The Echo will also act as a speaker if you connect your iPhone via Bluetooth.
But the volume is rather low.

RE: Searching for Text

2017-08-05 Thread Richard Turner
Did you flick once more to the line “Find XXX?”
Double tap on find xxx, where xxx is the word you searched for and see if that
helps.
I’m not sure after trying it again if it is as good as it used to be.
I thought it would take you right to the first occurance.
Perhaps the item chooser approach that Anna mentioned is a better one.

 Richard,

Thanks for these detailed instructions on how to find text on a Safari web
page. I followed your instructions and after clearing the text in the search
bar and typing the text I wanted to search for, I single finger swiped right
through a list of web pages until I reached a heading that said On this page 9
matches. Unfortunately, double tapping on that heading didn't take me to those
matched items. I could not figure out how to get to the matches and I'm hoping
someone can further direct me.

Thanks for the help.

Do not double tap the search button, but instead flick right with one finger,
you will find an option to find on page, or it may do it automatically. Either
way you can find on page that way.

You're supposed to practice previous lessons after a while. There's a button to

Duolingo Question

2017-08-05 Thread Christine Grassman
Hello, all. I would appreciate feedback from anyone who uses this app. I really
enjoy it, despite my need to deal with some less than accessible aspects, but
one thing is confusing me, and I am not sure whether I am mmissing something.
I would like to practice repeating words and phrases beyoond the instances
where I am asked to translate in the lsssons: basically, I want to sit down and
really practice with the native speaker the phrases I am mastering. There does
not seem to be a place where the words and phrases in the vrious lessons are
located to do this. Am I missing something?
It also seems as if there is more information on the main web site about one’s
progress and where it is suggested you go next than within the app. Any
feedback is appreciated; I love this app and want to get the most out of it.
TIA.

Re: Searching for Text

2017-08-05 Thread Alan Lemly

Try double tapping in the address bar with one finger, clear the text that is
there, then type the word you want to find on that page.
Do not double tap the search button, but instead flick right with one finger,
you will find an option to find on page, or it may do it automatically. Either
way you can find on page that way.

Re: One for the Brits

2017-08-05 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
Hi,

I use an app called Holiday Cal to keep track of all sorts of events.

This app has all the football fixtures and is updated with match results and
other details like team format.

You can subscribe and add events to your Callander. So for example if you
choose to follow a particular team you can have all their fixtures to be added
to your Callander.

Take a look at:

Ok, done it, and my thoughts? Very nice! It didn't take me long to purchase
Parceltrack Premium. Seems much easier to forward delivery notifications to
your personal parceltrack inbox. Also enabled push notifications and the like.
Will really test when I add my first delivery.
