A century ago, the first Technicolor film was a total disaster - CNET

I am posting the following as a technology-based historical point of
interest, only.

A century ago, the first Technicolor film was a total disaster - CNET
A hundred years ago, a group of scientists and silent movie stars stepped
out of a railroad car into the Florida sunshine to shoot America's first
feature-length color motion picture.
That Technicolor production, "The Gulf Between," a romantic comedy now
considered a lost film, premiered on Sept. 13, 1917. But it was a long, long
way from sumptuously colorful classics like 1939's "Gone with the Wind" and
1952's "Singin' in the Rain" that will forever be synonymous with
Hollywood's golden age. Instead, some critics slammed the film for red and
green flashes and random objects showing up too bright.
"The Gulf Between" was "meant to be a proof-of-concept," says Kelsey Eckert,
a Technicolor project archivist at Rochester, New York's George Eastman
Museum, home to some of the oldest surviving photography and film materials.
"They wanted a film they could show to investors and bigwigs in New York to
prove this whole Technicolor experiment was commercially viable. And it
wasn't."
The failures of the first Technicolor film teach some obvious lessons to
anyone looking to bring new technology to the big screen. Like today's 3D
pictures, "The Gulf Between," running about 58 minutes, was expensive and
hard on the eyes. And like today's 3D flicks -- which some call a gimmick
designed to make audiences forget they paid extra for a darker, less
brilliant version of a film -- it was a critical and artistic flop. A
commercial one, too.
But the creators of Technicolor persevered.
"The men and women of Technicolor tried and failed over and again --
Technicolor 1 is radically different than Technicolor 4 -- and even after
'succeeding' they never stopped tweaking and perfecting," says Ken Fox, also
a project archivist at the George Eastman Museum. "This quixotic
determination to succeed against what, at the beginning especially, must
have seemed like impossible odds, can serve as an important lesson for
filmmakers and tech developers alike."
In living color
Technicolor brought a vibrant, highly saturated palette to motion pictures
that sometimes bathed them in hyperrealism. But the first Technicolor
offering wasn't the first color seen by moviegoing audiences. Even in the
earliest days of cinema, motion picture pioneers Thomas Edison and George
Méliès had some of their films hand-painted. The first system that captured
natural color on film was Kinemacolor, which caused a sensation in Britain
in 1908. Kinemacolor imploded amid patent disputes, but not before an
intrigued American engineer named Herbert Kalmus brought a fragment of
Kinemacolor film back to the US.
Herbert T. Kalmus, president and co-founder of Technicolor.
Bettmann
Kalmus showed the film to his business partners Daniel Frost Comstock and W.
Burton Wescott. Kalmus and Wescott met at MIT, and had only a passing
interest in cinema as an art form. They were more interested in the
technical challenges -- and the moneymaking opportunities.
The three men founded the Technicolor Motion Picture Corporation in 1915.
Comstock was the inventor, Wescott turned ideas into products and Kalmus
served as the businessman.
To create a color film that did away with the fringing and flicker that
plagued existing color systems, the Technicolor team had to innovate all the
way from the treatment of the film to the design of the camera and
projector.
Their first Technicolor process involved shooting on black and white film
through a special beam-splitting prism and red and green filters. To play
the film back, the system was essentially reversed, with a special projector
that contained its own red and green filters. Like Kinemacolor, this was
known as an "additive" color system.
The first tests made the Technicolor boys optimistic. Comstock and a team of
engineers headed to Palm Beach, Florida, where natural light and colorful
environments abounded. The resulting footage of sunsets, sailboats and fancy
women's outfits delighted the engineers -- and their investors.
The next step: a feature film that could be shown to a mass audience. The
plot of "The Gulf Between" is perhaps less notable than the innovation going
on behind the scenes. Based on the story "The Little Skipper" by Anthony
Kelly, it told of a young girl lost at sea and brought up by the family of a
smuggler. Later, she falls in love with a wealthy boy, only for his parents
to keep them apart until she rediscovers her own family.
The melodrama was "very typical of the kind of films of the time," Fox says.
"I think [Technicolor] really hoped they had a hit on their hands. But it
was the technical difficulties that undid them."
Lights, camera … accident
Technicolor's seasoned production manager, Carl Alfred "Doc" Willatt,
brought in a relatively inexperienced -- and therefore easily

Hello everyone,

I realize we have discussed this somewhat, before. But I wanted to ask some
questions, because I am considering giving up my cable. But I want it to be
worth it, if I do this.

Right now I have Spectrum, and there is a huge problem with the narrative
guide. It's been this way for a while now, and nobody knows when, or it will be
fixed.

With the silver package, which does include, HBO, Sinamax, and Show Time, I pay
around 130. But this includes phone service I don't even use, just got it so I
could get the promotion.

It includes, the internet, and of course the cable.

I would like to find something quite accessible, and I'd like it to get a few
channels I really like.

I tried the Directv Now App when it first came out. I luckily only took
the trial. I found it more easier to use than Sling TV. But then in some
other ways, it was a bit more confusing.

I really want to see what happens once Youtube TV is released in Saint
Louis. I hope this is done sooner than later! And I hope it's accessible.

I have a Roku. Right now I use my Spectrum App on that, and I love it!

Whatever I use, I want on-demand. If I have to use an Antenna for local
channels, that's fine. Not thrilled, but something I can live with.

So what are my options?

I have a Roku I can use, along with my iPad. I have my phone as well.
But I don't care to put my phone on do not disturb, and such.

Any thoughts, ideas, and suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Latest Hulu Update

2017-09-09 Thread Lisa Belville
Hi. Here's what I submitted as my review for Hulu. It looks like many of
their users are dissatisfied, so a fix could be in the works. How long does
it take for a review, even a bad one to show up in the app store?

I would have used the zero rating, but wanted to be nice. I am a blind user
and I use Voice Over to navigate my iPhone. I've been able to use Hulu for
over two years without difficulty. However, this 5.6 and 5.6.1 update has
broken this access and the app is now unusable. My automatic renewal has
already happened for September, but I'm going to cancel my subscription if
this issue isn't fixed. Judging from the other reviews, even your sighted
customers are not happy with this update. And yes, blind folks like a good
movie or TV show just as much as everyone else. I mostly like browsing the
older shows and movies, but some of the new ones are good, too. Please fix
this ASAP so I can go back to my old shows. Go to https://www.applevis.com/
for more info about Voiceover and how to make apps work for all.

Hello, unfortunately, even if you do try to email them, or send them a message
in the app, unless you have some sight, you can no longer submit your message.
For about the last 10 months, I have had this issue. Basically, before you
start writing out your message, the submit button is there. However, once your
message is complete, the only way the text can be submitted, is if a sighted
person turns off voiceover, and hits the submit button. Unfortunately, I'm not
sure if there is a way to email them, if you aren't either using the help
section, or using one of your previous trips, and then you can only email or
write about specific things. You could try going through Facebook, and either
leaving a message on their Facebook page, or through Facebook messenger. That
is the only option I can think of at this time.

Re: Screen Locked

2017-09-09 Thread William James
I actually prefer not to have the sounds on. They are extremely nerve-racking
to me. I have never had them on my computer, so why should I have them on my
phone?

RE: app that automatically gives weather info for current location

2017-09-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The native app should look at your location, just make sure you have location
services turned on in Settings > Privacy and that the weather app is allowed to
access location.

Hello list
Is there an app which picks up one’s location and shows weather info. It seems
that the native iPhone weather app requires that a location be given or is
there a setting for auto?

RE: Latest Hulu Update

2017-09-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I am in Canada where Hulu is not available, but I can definitely recommend
contacting the company directly and via social media, if a couple of dozen
people twee them and post on Facebook how accessibility for the visually
impaired is now broken it will probably most effective. We all have seen
examples of how powerful social media can be.
As for the question how sometimes companies who have an accessible app at first
later on release an update which breaks accessibility there is only one answer:
these companies do not understand or care about accessibility. One great
example where a company has understood accessibility and continues to
understand it is Sonos. When I first bought some Sonos players (that is Sonos,
the multi-room wireless music system) the app was useable, but far from fully
accessible with lots of unlabelled buttons and some areas which didn't work for
a blind user. Sonos is also a great example for what can happen if people are
persistent in lobbying for better accessibility. I hounded them pretty
relentlessly, but was by no means the only one and certainly don't claim I'm
responsible for their change in attitude. In any case, I bought my first Sonos
stuff in 2009 and I think it was in 2012 (hard to believe it's been 5 years)
Sonos suddenly reached out to me and some of the others who requested
improvements in accessibility to beta test a new version with Voiceover
improvements. I have been beta testing Sonos ever since and inside a very short
time the app was made fully accessible and all the many updates maintained that
high standard of accessibility. At one point a feature called "TruePlay" which
allows you to use your iPhones microphone to "tune" the sound of certain Sonos
players was not accessible, but that was relatively short lived and it also was
made accessible.
Hopefully some dedicated people will find ways to contact Hulu which will
matter, calling their support line is of course fine, but in my experience is
probably one of the least effective ways to communicate these issues because
most companies are outsourcing their customer support to call centres in th
Philippines, India and other countries and these call centre agents at best can
log these calls, but I sometimes doubt they ever find their way to the people
who are really in charge of what needs to be improved. As Mark Taylor has
sometimes pointed out, it can still be very effective to try and find out who
the CEO is and to find out the address of their HQ and to then write a good old
fashioned letter and spend a few Dollars to mail it as a double registered
letter which means somebody at the company has to sign for it.
In the case of Sonos who still has phone support in the US at their main office
I called so often until somebody passed me on to a supervisor who ended up
giving me the direct email of the person in charge of app development. I
communicated with that guy a fair bit over the years and only if you manage to
reach out to people higher up you will really accomplish something. This of
course means that you need to be professional, friendly, objective and
persistent. If you go on a rant about how it should be a given that the app
should be accessibility and you threaten with a law suit or something like that
you are not likely to be taken seriously and of course few of us can afford to
hire a lawyer and really go that route which these companies of course know.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: Storm tracker... anyone know of an accessible app?

2017-09-09 Thread Jan Kleinhans
Hi

It does indeed have notifications for all the possible cities you can select
within the app. You need to set the city as a favourite and then turn on
whatever notifications you want to receive for your city. The developer lives
in Europe, so I'm sure it should work for cities in Europe.

the notifications that I want to have on the weather gods app.

it. I have had it for at least five years and had no problems up until
now.
I hadn't used it for a while because I mainly use it with the new shows.
Everything was re runs so I just was waiting until the new season. Oh
well.

Hi, all.

I'm using an iPhone SE with iOS 10.3.3 and the latest version of Hulu
issued Wednesday. This is version 5.6. Since updating this app I can't
get past the first screen. It tells me to swipe to get started, and
then there are four pages which I can move to, but I can't get any
additional info about the app or it's programming. I've been a hulu
subscriber for a while, and their recent offerings have been fine as far
as accessibility goes. I'm wondering if there's a workaround, such as
turning VO off and tapping on something to get past this introductory
screen. I can't tell if there's something even on the screen, but I'm
assuming there is something but VO can only read that small part of it.

TIA for the help/info.

Re: Storm tracker... anyone know of an accessible app?

2017-09-09 Thread Davy Cuppens
Could it be that Weather Gods has no coverage for Europe? I used the app some
months ago without any notification or weather alerts.

Hi,
I'm not the original poster, but I I just purchased the app. I currently use
dark sky and enjoying it because of the push notifications. So far, I have set
the notifications that I want to have on the weather gods app.
Initial impression, I like the user interface. .

  Hello all,

You could try the weather app “Weather Gods”

You can set many different locations and save alerts for all of them.

  App Store link:

The applications developer is very accessibility orientated, and has made
every feature accessible to VoiceOver users.

RE: Latest Hulu Update

2017-09-09 Thread Mike Ulrich
You know, I can never figure that out! Why do companies that want us blinks to
spend our money with them, and originally put out a good accessible app, all of
a sudden an update comes out and bingo; no more accessibility!
I can think of many stores, shops and service providers; with garbage apps, and
some with garbage websites!

I just called HuLu customer support and talked to a very nice person who
totally understood and agreed with my complaints. I wrote a negative review in
the App store. I hope that the complaints from blind and sighted users will
make an impact, but in the meantime the app sucks. I will wait for a couple of
weeks to see if they update the app and improve it, and if not, I will cancel
my account.
