RE: Deleted messages on iCloud

2017-10-08 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Max,

While her emails may have been moved into the deleted/trash folder of her
iCloud account, they may, indeed, still be available for recovery; assuming
that the Deleted/Trash folder has not yet been purged.

Were I you, I would either from a mail client, such as the native OS mail apps
on any Apple device or from iCloud.com, check to see if there are any messages
inside the Deleted/Trash folder.

As to your question, I don't know if one can use an iTunes backup to restore
iCloud email messages to a device.

Mark

Hi all,
my wife has lost all her emails from her iCloud inbox. This has happened since
I updated her iPhone 7+ to V 11.01. She has other emails in seperate folders
for the same account. Has there been a problem with this update?
I have backed up her iPad & her iPhone before the update. Can I restore her
devices from the iTunes backups and restore her male?
Thanks as always for any help.
Max.

Re: A question

2017-10-08 Thread Mike B.
Hi Again Simon,

Sorry, but I sent that last message prematurely. I just tried to change my
screen orientation by unlocking the screen, & having my wife look at it
while I turned the phone, & for whatever reason I couldn't get the scree to
turn, it stayed in the portrait position. I know her & I have played with
this setting before, & it worked as described, but not tonight! I only use
the phone keypad as the experimentation screen, so it might take some
testing to get the screen the way you want it.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi Simon,

First you need to know if your screen orientation is locked or not. If you
don't lock your screen & rotate your iPhone the screen orientation will
change from portrait to landscape mode by turning your iPhone.

To get to the lock orientation on / off button, open the Control Center by
touching the top of the screen / status bar, then swiping up with 3 fingers.
Now swipe to the right a few times, I believe it's 4 times, to the Lock
Orientation button, & single finger double tap it to toggle it on / off.

For portrait mode:
With the lock orientation off, turn your iPhone to the vertical position
meaning the length of your iPhone is going away / perpendicular to your
body. Now single finger double tap the lock orientation button to lock it
in this position.

For Landscape mode:
With the lock orientation off, turn your iPhone to the horizontal position,
meaning the length of your iPhone is going across / left to right / parallel
to your body. Now single finger double tap the lock orientation button to
lock it in this position.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

RE: special character on new iOS is not functioning?

2017-10-08 Thread Cris Ali
No, special Characters are not functioning. I use Arabic a lot and in it I
often need to use special characters, but it does not work.
I figured out a tedious way around this problem.
I use touch typing, so I first find the character I want. When I lift up my
finger it gets typed. Then I double tap and hold on this character. This
gives me the list of special characters associated with it, so I choose the one
I want. After that I make sure that the rotor is on Characters then I swipe up
once, This takes me back one character. Then I touch the delete key to delete
the letter I typed first which I now do not need. Then I swipe once down to
put me back at the place where I want to continue typing and I proceed from
there.
It is a tedious way around, but can deal with it for the time being.
Cheers,
Cris

Is There No Way to Hide Purchased iBooks in iOS 10 or Later?

2017-10-08 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

In iOS 9, one could easily hide purchased iBooks from within the iOS iBook
app.

Try as I may, I can not discover how this is done in iOS 10, if, in fact, it
can be done at all.

My Google searches result in articles written for the iOS 9 iBook app.

Do any of you know how to hide purchased iBooks in iOS 10 or 11?

All responses greatly appreciated.

Mark

Re: More problems with voice dream reader

2017-10-08 Thread Mary Otten
Having had to rebuild my library twice with earlier screw ups with Voice Dream,
I haven't yet updated. I find your note that you have several hundred books in
your library and haven't had a problem interesting. I really wish the folks at
Voice Dream could get to the bottom of what is the problem here? I mean really.
Maybe with the expanded deal with the files app in iOS 11, they can come out
with some way to communicate with that app, such that you could upload all of
your library to your iCloud Drive and then fetch it all back if necessary.
Surely, there is a better way than they're flaky iCloud implementation. And
offering me a refund after I've spent hours building a library with folders
etc. is just not OK.

RE: Clarification re Can't Change iCloud Email Address

2017-10-08 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Cliff,

You are absolutely correct. The number of iCloud aliases, one can create, is
3, not 5.

I apologize for my error and any confusion it may have caused.

5? The last time I created one, it says you only get 3 alias’s in edition to
your main address, so a total of 4. Where do you go to create 2 more?

I think you have to check the manually manage music and videos to get
this to work. You'll find that I believe in the summary tab in iTunes
under your iPhone section.

Hi all,
my wife has lost all her emails from her iCloud inbox.

Update on voice dream reader

2017-10-08 Thread Dana Leet
Hello everyone, seeing as not very many people help me get a direct answer to
my question, but only inquired on my desire to download books, I figured that I
would at least be courteous, as there are people also with this group facing
the same problem I had. Today, as I find iTunes on a computer not very
accessible, my sister-in-law came over and bless her heart without her I
wouldn’t have my books back. We went into iTunes, and copied the library from
voice dream reader onto my computer. Upon doing this, we then plug in my iPad
which by the way, we bought back in December, and very stream has not allowed
us to do cloud sync correctly since that time. We were able to take the books
from the iTunes library, that were copied onto my hard drive on my computer and
then placed all of them into the voice stream library on the iPad. Now finally,
all of my books are on my iPad with a fresh download of voice dream reader.
This tells me, that the latest update may be OK, however, something happened in
its download on my iPhone. So just letting you all know that if you think you
may lose your books you may want to make a back up every several months of your
library through iTunes. Hopefully this helps someone

Re: More problems with voice dream reader

2017-10-08 Thread Arnold Schmidt
My observation is that trouble occurs when people use the iCloud backup
feature. It never has been quite right, for whatever the reason. Luckily, I
have never had to restore this iPhone 6, since getting it in April, 2015. But I
think I remember that those books are backed up with an encrypted backup to
iTunes. I think that they were restored to my iPhone 5 the two times I had to
restore it. And I know they were put onto this 6 when I put the backup from my
5 onto this one when I got it. Things may be different now, and an encrypted
backup to iTunes may no longer restore them.

RE: arranging apps..

2017-10-08 Thread Richard Turner
Yes, that is the new iOS 11 way of moving apps. It actually ends up working
the same as in iOS 10, just new terminology.
The one big change is you can add multiple apps to the drag session in case you
want to move several at once to a different page, or create a folder with all
those apps in it, etc.

HTH,
Richard

They changed the method a little to acommodate dragging and dropping multiple
objects. The first step is to go into edit mode by double-tapping on an app and
holding after the second tap until you hear that you've started editing. Next,
touch an app and flick up or down to go through the options. You want to drag
apps. You'll hear three rising clicks as you add apps to the current drag. Next
, use normal swipes and gestures to move to where you want to situate the apps
you're dragging. Once you've touched an app in that area, you can flick up or
down and go through options to place the dragged apps before or after the appp
you touched. You can also create a folder or add dragged items to a folder.

All of this sounds more complicated and lesss intuitive than it actually is.
I'll find a better way of explaining it when I update that section of the guide
I'm working on. One other thing to be aware of is that once you've entered edit
mode, make a move within 30 seconds or you'll be kicked out of edit mode.

RE: Clarification re Can't Change iCloud Email Address

2017-10-08 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Christine,

I'm curious, were you able to resolve this issue?

After re-reading your post, it occurred to me that what you may be referring to
are iCloud email aliases, of which you are allowed up to 5.

To create email aliases you must, in your preferred web browser, go to:

http://appleid.apple.com

Once signed in, you will locate an area that will allow you to create up to 5
email aliases, any of which you can change/use at any time.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

My husband and I both have gmail addresses, which we use for our Apple ID’s. I
have an iCloud email address, which I set up several years ago. When I did so,
I was able to choose “cfgrassman” rather than “cgrassman1009” which is what I
use for gmail.
My husband wants to have an iCloud email, and attempted to set it up. When his
user information comes up, his first and last name are listed, with an edit box.
Below this is offered an icloud.com address, using the same user name as the
one he uses for gmail. As I did, he wants to use a different name before the @
sign. However, the offered icloud address which mirrors his gmail address does
not appear to be editable. He is *not* changing his Apple ID; he still intends
to use the gmail address for that. However, he does want to set up an iCloud
address that is different from his gmail user name, as I did. Despite searching
around, we cannot figure out how to do this.

RE: How to make a calendar entry using Siri

2017-10-08 Thread Chip Orange
You can edit the entry by telling Siri to "reschedule the appointment for
tomorrow at 9 am" and she'll prompt you about what you wish to change.

Siri wants a title, time and date.

I usually say: "Schedule an appointment, titled orthopedics, on
October 11 at 8:30 AM." Siri repeats what she thinks I said. I can
say 'change title' or "change time". Siri asks if I want to schedule
the appointment and I say Yes. then if something is slightly wrong,
or if I want to add additional notifications, I edit the entry.

Hi Mary,
There are several ways to do this, but the syntax I have settled on is to say:
"create an appointment titled Dr. Smith on November first at 10 AM."
Siri will repeat it and ask if you want it scheduled, say yes and you are done.

You can add the length of the appointment to by saying create a 90 minute
appointment, and so on.
I hope that helps,
Richard

Occasionally I have tried to use Siri to make a calendar entry. Usually
something messes up. I think there is a certain specific syntax you have to
use, and then it works. I don't use it often enough to remember that syntax.
Can someone please refresh my memory. It would be awfully nice if Siri could
become smart enough not to need specific syntax in order to get a simple
calendar entry correct. Maybe this has improved in iOS 11??

Reg,

You simply type the code on the keyboard using the number row keys and
pressing enter afterwards should do the trick.

Did you mistype regarding the model number? Did you buy a K480 or a J780?

I posted last week Best Buy Canada had it on sale, regular $99.99 on for
$69.99. That was until October 5.

On October 6 I received an email from Best Buy with “Yellow Tag” deals and
while I thought about ordering the keyboard when it was $69.99 I forgot to do
so. Anyhow, I checked it again and now it’s down to $59.99 for this week’s sale
and I did now order it.

My wife and I have to go back to Calgary in two weeks and this way I can have a
full-sized keyboard with Numpad and a USB dongle to use with my laptop and I
can pair my iPhone as the second device via bluetooth. I don’t often use a
keyboard with my iPhone and already have a K811 which is a compact size
keyboard specifically for Apple devices and without Numpad, but I usually
prefer to use an external keyboard with my laptop especially if I work on it
for several hours so this hopefully will work out well.

I might bring the packaging as well and in case I don’t like it I’ll just go to
a Best Buy in Calgary and return it.

Regards,

Sieghard

Is there some other way of using this code to pair the device? Am I missing

The sequence I have found to avoid the double typing is to have the phone

Hello Sieghard and thanks for the tip. I will try again. The other trick is
that I only appear to have about 10 seconds before the window closes. Not much
time for somebody to read the number and me to key it.

Yes, the keyboard is definitely a K480, really nice feel to it and great layout.

I paid $48.88 from Amazon.ca.

Try a Reset Network Settings which you find in Settings > General > Reset.
Just keep in mind that you will have to reconnect to your WiFi after the phone

Yesterday afternoon we had an Amber alert issued in our area. I think that it
turned out ok because there has been no more about it on the news. But two
things happened after this alert. My battery began to drain quickly and the
stand by time matched the usage time when I woke up this morning even though I
didn't touch the phone for several hours.
So I restarted the phone three times and the alert and sound came back each
time. I cleared all notifications and it's still coming back with each restart.
When this alert went off for the first time I was in the other room and wasnt
near the phone. Any suggestions how to get it to stop coming up? This battery
drain happened after the alert and I haven't installed anything new on my phone
or even used it very much.
And nothing is showing up under battery usage using abnormal battery.
I've never had an alert hang around like this. And we get plenty of weather
alerts during the spring when the storms are around more.

Hulu has a really great offer right now which is sort of tempting. But what I
would like to know is if anyone on the list is using the Live TV service on
their Apple Tv and if so, how accessible is the app? I currently have no

can get the full Hulu package so if it is useable on the Apple Tv I might just
give it a try. I don’t really care if it is accessible on my IPhone just the
Apple TV.

I would strongly recommend making an appointment at the store and having them
see what is going on.

You know I just realized that the problem does not occur on my 6S, only on
the 7. I love the 7 but there do seem to be some random audio issues which
pop up from time to time.Maybe I should make an appointment at the Apple

I did not have the problem, all my custom ringtones were still there.
Maybe the Reset Network Settings does help here, don't know, but I have had
very few if any of the issues some people here mentioned except of course
for those which are actually bugs like the deleting of text messages wit the
rotor etc.

I am having an issue with the ringtone on my iPhone 7-plus since updating to
IOS--11. When I receive a call from any one who I have not assigned a
ringtone to, the default tone happens. I tried to change my tone to one that
I have purchased, and the tone shows up as changed, but the old default tone

RE: More problems with voice dream reader

2017-10-08 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Nancy,
I hope you and your husband both write to Voice Dream Reader to let them know
that you too had issues with a large library.
The more people that let them know, the more likely they can figure out what is
wrong and fix it.

i'm using the latest Voice Dream Reader and the latest iOS 11.0.2, and reading
is fine. I am not using the cloud sync. I have an iPod Touch 6 with 128 GB
which has about 53 GB available.
I use Amy from Ivona as my reading voice.
Sorry I cannot duplicate your issue.
Well, actually I'm glad I don't have it, but sorry things are going south for

RE: More problems with voice dream reader

2017-10-08 Thread Larry Lumpkin
We tend to keep more books on our devices than we probably need to but my wife
and I come from a generation when we were greatful to have what few books we
did have.

I have all of the books I read from bookshare backed up on a external
harddrive. I also have them on my main drive. When I want to read one again,
I email the zip file to my email account on my ipad mini. I open the atachment
and import the book into voice dream reader.

I think it’s a good idea to keep the books downloaded in case Congress decides
to not fund the book share program anymore we would still have access to the
books. So I don’t see the problem with having as many as we get because we are
allowed to download them each month so there should not be an issue with that
since we pay for the service anyway.

15 to 20 seconds, and then completely closes out and it is very very sluggish

Re: More problems with voice dream reader

2017-10-08 Thread Russ Kiehne
I have all of the books I read from bookshare backed up on a external
harddrive. I also have them on my main drive. When I want to read one again,
I email the zip file to my email account on my ipad mini. I open the atachment
and import the book into voice dream reader.

I think it’s a good idea to keep the books downloaded in case Congress decides
to not fund the book share program anymore we would still have access to the
books. So I don’t see the problem with having as many as we get because we are
allowed to download them each month so there should not be an issue with that
since we pay for the service anyway.

Re: More problems with voice dream reader

2017-10-08 Thread pegkane52

Hi, at tops, I think I have about 40 bucks in voice dream reader, I have a
couple different apps for reading books, such as dolphin easy reader and the
book share app, off the top of my head just name went out of my mind, but
sometimes if I think I have too many books, I try and split them up. The name
of that reading app for Berkshire is called read to go.

2017-10-08 Thread Dana Leet
Honestly we were not trying to be defensive at all, we were trying to answer
and it just makes us very sad that we’ve done all this work even saving things
in the order that the books were written so that we could read them back
correctly from authors websites and everything like this, and to be truthful it
was very scary to us when we found out last year that they were talking about
the Department of Education possibly cutting funding and if they did do that we
would really be in a pickle because if we have things on her wish list but
can’t access them we would not be able to read any of those books

Re: More problems with voice dream reader

2017-10-08 Thread tim leet
I think it’s a good idea to keep the books downloaded in case Congress decides
to not fund the book share program anymore we would still have access to the
books. So I don’t see the problem with having as many as we get because we are
allowed to download them each month so there should not be an issue with that
since we pay for the service anyway.

Re: More problems with voice dream reader

2017-10-08 Thread Dana Leet
Good morning, I am going to answer this question the best way that I know how,
and that is to say, that I choose to have that many books on my books voice
dream reader because I wish to. And honestly the books that I have a very tiny
they come from book share and to be truthful I want to download books when I
know that I am interested in them so I don’t have to go back and look them up
at a later time I choose to do so just like other people choose to collect
things I choose to have as many books as I wish to have I’m not so sure why it
is so important to determine why I have so many books the problem is that the
app is crashing not that I have books have a blessed day and seriously I don’t
ask other people why they have so many things or why they choose to collect
things or why they like certain things other than other things I’m not so sure
what the what the fact is that I have so many books has to do with an app not
working properly when I have plenty of room on my phone and plenty of space on
my cloud it makes no sense

i'm using the latest Voice Dream Reader and the latest iOS 11.0.2, and reading
is fine. I am not using the cloud sync. I have an iPod Touch 6 with 128 GB
which has about 53 GB available.
I use Amy from Ivona as my reading voice.
Sorry I cannot duplicate your issue.

Misleading daily activity is no surprise to me. What I mean when saying this;
Each vigorous movement similiar to when you take a step , the phone
preceives this movement as a step, but in actuality you are sitting while using
your phone. Before I start any exercise routine I check the Health app for the
recorded steps taken so far for the day. I deduct the number of steps taken
prior to my workout from the total after my workout. This way I have a more
accurate step total. In the end Im ahead of my daily goal by figuring total of
steps this way.

Hi, from what I have seen, every time I have disconnected my keyboard and use
the phone keyboard there seems to be a button as you can’t see the letters that
says keyboard which is where it turns it on and then you see the letters hope

Re: Downloading entire Bookshare library at once

2017-10-08 Thread Lois Butterfield
This is what I thought. I was surprised that people were wanting to keep and
sync hundreds of books. I’m glad to know I can access my Bookshare history
though.

Take care,

Not only do I think the downloading of an entire library not possible, I don't
think Bookshare would want it to be possible. I think I remember reading in one
of their policy statements that their reason for being was not so that people
could amass their own private library, rather to have access to books one
wanted to read in the present or immediate future, then delete them. One can
access their book history, and also keep reading lists on Bookshare itself, but
Bookshare is meant to be a service from which one can have a library from
which one can borrow books, then delete them, as opposed to Kindle, or Audible,
where one purchases them.

extreme. Since Bookshare has a monthly limit of how much can be downloaded, you
would have to download your thousands again over a long period of time. This is
one of the reasons I keep a book list of what I have read. What gets confusing
too is multiple books with the same title by so many different authors. Good
luck. I don't know if what I said here helped but hope it may have.

Hello list,

So, I’ve been a member of Bookshare since it started around 2002 or 2003.
I’ve downloaded probably thousands of books in this time. In the process of
doing so, the older format is not compatible with apps like VoiceDreamReader on
iOS or the book quality has since been replaced by a better formatted/scanned
version. That and I may have some books here and others there. This and that
backup on the cloud or external drive, etc.

My question is… is there in fact a way to download my entire book history
in one shot or am I looking at a labor intensive task sifting through God knows
how many titles that stretch back over ten years?

Would appreciate any info on whether this can be accomplished in a
reasonable manner.

I’m a Windows user, but my main reading device is the iPhone these days. I
would ideally like to get everything on my PC first and then upload to the
iPhone.

Thanks,

Cristobal

The iPhone is full of bs

2017-10-08 Thread Jewel
However, it is the sort of bs that is rather flattering, though, wildly, at
odds with the truth.
I have just started checking my day's activity records in health, and it tells
me that, yesterday I
walked/ran 0.33kg, and took 900 steps, give or take a few while today, I
bettered that by
walking/running 0.36kg and I took about the same number of steps; I must have
lengthened my hobble.
Unfortunately, these glowing stats were created by my doing 2 sessions of 60
on-the-spot marching
high knee rises,
today, even though I had * walked/run 0.03kg further, I had done only one
session of 40, and my use
of the word * high is open to some question!

RE: Iphone 8 VS 8+ or X

2017-10-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Maria, Mary and craig,

Craig is correct, the iPhone X has optical zoom for both back camera lenses.
However, both the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have optical image stabilization for the
zoom lens, this is a difference to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus and earlier where
only the Plus models had optical image stabilization. The below is taken
directly from the full phone specification page of the Apple website, it is
after the section which lists differences and talks about specifications
present in the 8 and 8 Plus which is what is meant by "both phones":

Both models:
Optical image stabilization
Six‑element lens
Quad-LED True Tone flash with Slow Sync
Panorama (up to 63MP)
Sapphire crystal lens cover
Backside illumination sensor
Hybrid IR filter
Autofocus with Focus Pixels
Tap to focus with Focus Pixels
Live Photos with stabilization
Wide colour capture for photos and Live Photos
Improved local tone mapping
Body and face detection
Exposure control
Noise reduction
Auto HDR for photos
Auto image stabilization
Burst mode
Timer mode
Photo geotagging
Image formats captured: HEIF and JPEG

Video Recording
4K video recording at 24 fps, 30 fps or 60 fps
1080p HD video recording at 30 fps or 60 fps
720p HD video recording at 30 fps
Optical image stabilization for video
Optical zoom; 6x digital zoom (iPhone 8 Plus only)
Quad-LED True Tone flash
Slo‑mo video support for 1080p at 120 fps or 240 fps
Time‑lapse video with stabilization
Cinematic video stabilization (1080p and 720p)
Continuous autofocus video
Body and face detection
Noise reduction
Take 8MP still photos while recording 4K video
Playback zoom
Video geotagging
Video formats recorded: HEVC and H.264

FaceTime HD Camera
7MP camera
1080p HD video recording
Retina Flash
ƒ/2.2 aperture
Wide colour capture for photos and Live Photos
Auto HDR

Hello,
In the iPhone X both lenses of the dual camera setup have image stabilization.
On the 8plus only one of the dual lenses has the image stabilization.

I’m firstly considering the Iphone 8 vs the 8+, of which the better
reported battery life and larger screen work area (I also type a lot
onscreen), are cons for the +, but smaller pocket size and cheaper price
 are cons for the 8.

I think the cameras are the same between the two so for youtube video
making and OCR work they should be identical, but I have the following
 questions:

Do both 8 and 8+ have optical image stabilization?
Do both 8 and 8+ have stereo speakers, and do you think they would sound
exactly the same (listening to audio books and youtube very important for
 better sound on phone speakers)?
And are there any other worth while mentioning differences between the two?

And lastly, I think the X would be everyone’s dream phone, but I already
hear production is low and they may not ship enough units by 5 Nov to
U.S., thus to South Africa will probably take another million years, plus
cost, at $1000 starting, by the time South Africa gets it it will cost
excessively more than the 8 and 8+. Wondering if worth waiting vs the
 price.

Do any of you have your 8 or 8+ yet, and what are your thoughts on the
phone speed, feel, speakers, battery, etc.
