Re: Favorite VO voices?

2017-11-13 Thread englishrider91
I'm a huge, huge NeoSpeech fan, myself. If I could get Kate, James, Ashley, and
Bridget on my iPhone as system-wide voices, I'd die a very happy woman lol.

For now, though, I use compact Samantha. I can't stand her HQ version. She says
things all weird. she has weird up/down inflections in her voice between words
and within words. A ton of the Acapela voices have this issue, too. It's why I
can't stand Heather. The Ivona voices have this issue too, somewhat. But
probably my biggest issue with them is that they're so flatbe it's why Sally
drives me nuts. She's pleasant enough to listen to, if you can get over how
incredibly bored she sounds.

The other voices I use are conpact Karen (the same issues I have with HQ
Samantha I also have with HQ Karen) and the HQ version of the old female
British English Siri voice. Funnily enough, I actually prefer her HQ version.

Speaking of HQ old Siri voices, has Apple fixed the issue of not being able to
use these voices in other apps, like Voice Dream Reader and the Blindfold
games? I'd really love to use the HQ version of the old British English Siri
voice in these apps, but I can't. Either she doesn't show up, or when selected,
doesn't work, and the LQ version is used instead.

Thanks,
Ari

I don't know of an app, but on the Audible website if a book is part of a
series that information is usually a link and if you activate it you then get
to a page where all the books in that series are displayed in order.

Hello Rebecca,

I use the Over Drive public Library app to see lists of books by either the
same author or by the book series. In fact, Over Drive will even tell you what
number, in the series, a book is, when possible.

I love this app. I was going to begin an Audible subscription but discovered
Over Drive, just in time. The thing is that Over Drive uses the exact same
titles as Audible.

This is all based on being a member of your local public library but other than
that, the sky is the limit.

As for a completely stand alone app that allows one to search for book series,
I would be interested in obtaining that, also.

Sieghard,

Wow! That's something.

The employees always replace my headset after confirming that I have Apple Care
Plus. In the old days, they would take the headsets in the back to confirm
their malfunction but, the last two times I took one in, they just swapped it
out, no questions asked. Of course, many of the Apple employees in at least
four Apple stores know me pretty well and they know that I would not bring a
headset in were it not legitimately damaged.

I have not had to take one in for over a year as they have gotten much more
rugged, in my opinion.

The last one I took in had gotten frayed at the place where the left and right
cords split. I'm certain this was because of me having fallen asleep with the
headset on and, turning in my sleep, over the course of many months, was just
too much for the cable.

When I took that headset in, I showed it to an employee and said, something to
the effect, "This is what can happen when you fall asleep too many times while
wearing this thing." The employee laughed and went and got me another pair.

I think these kinds of things greatly depend upon where one lives and how the
store is managed.

As you jokingly stated, the Apple stores are almost like a second home to me.

The other day, I was walking down an isle that was just adjacent to an
in-session Apple class. As I passed the area, the instructor ran over to me
and asked me to help him explain something that he knew I would know, based on
my experience. After the class ended, he jokingly said that he was glad he
could ask for my help as he would have been embarrassed to ask another employee.

That really made me smile.

Just a comment regarding headset replacement. Not sure if Apple employees might
do different things here, but I also have had headsets replacement under Apple
Care Plus, but I believe officially this is limited to 2 replacements. Also,
last year I went into the Apple Store with a defective headset and was told

I'm only now just jumping into this thread but, am I correct in that you are
unhappy at the speech Recognition of Siri?

If so, then there may be a particular problem with your device.

I and many of my friends use Siri to look up info and make calls on a daily
basis without any problems, whatsoever.

I say this not to put the blame on you but to suggest that a hardware
malfunction may be the reason for your difficulties.

If you are using Siri without a headset, then I would suggest that you remove
your iOS device from any case, to see what happens.

If you are using a headset when talking to Siri, then, perhaps, there is a
problem with the headset microphone. On several occasions, when Siri failed to
understand me on a consistent basis, I discovered that the mike had gone bad on
the headset. In all of those instances, I took my headset into the Apple Store

RE: 4 Ways to Make Siri Smarter on Your iPhone, CNET

2017-11-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Mark,

Just a comment regarding headset replacement. Not sure if Apple employees might
do different things here, but I also have had headsets replacement under Apple
Care Plus, but I believe officially this is limited to 2 replacements. Also,
last year I went into the Apple Store with a defective headset and was told
that it was partly torn and that this was obviously user-caused damage and it
was not going to be covered under my Apple Care Plus.

Hello Deidra,

In all of those instances, I took my headset into the Apple Store
where they replaced them, at no additional charge as I always have Apple Care
Plus.

Just something to consider.

Mark

Yes Sieghart I figured out quite some time ago that company name where it tells
you to put it is not the only place you can put it to have Siri recognize it.
In fact I don't even bother to enter anything in the company field anymore. Yes
the first name goes in the first edit field and the last name goes in the last
name edit field. I got that right to! Sometimes I resort to using a nickname
because siri seems to recognize those rather easily. Anyway your post is
bordering on funny though I'm not sure you intended it to be. Honestly though
some of the questions are so simple and so straightahead that I'm
flabbergasted at how ill equipped Siri is to answer them. As for in putting
phone numbers I only do it automatically from phone calls that come in. I don't
manually input them. So those should be correct. And then there's the names
that you teach Siri how to pronounce and when you pronounce them exactly like
she's learned to pronounce them she still brings up five other names on top of
it all. Makes no sense to me. And then sometimes she doesn't even recognize the
name that you've already taught her to pronounce.
Are the accessibility features on the Google phones still really much poorer
than those on the iPhone? Is that why so many of us are still using the iPhones?

SIRI still tells me information of planes and usually when it says I found this
and this on the web take a look I can then review this information. Not sure
why this doesn't work for you.

There are things that siri used to do well that it doesn't any more. Like look
up entries in your contacts. If I put in a business name it is for my benefit
not for siri because it doesn't recognize them. You used to be able to ask
what the plane was that was flying over you and get that info but not any more.
What, is that a security risk or something? I can't think of them right now
but there are more. When bringing up the internet to answer a question, it
used to read the selection but not any more and neither can you.

Thanks for the ideas I will employ them. What phone number did you contact for
the iTunes Store? The only phone number that I know to contact them is the
number that appears on your credit card statement when you make a purchase, and
calling back just yields a message telling you to contact Apple support or

Re: 4 Ways to Make Siri Smarter on Your iPhone, CNET

2017-11-13 Thread Deidre Muccio

RE: 24 iOS 11 Privacy & Security Settings You Should Check Right Now

2017-11-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Actually a few of the recommendations are just fine, you definitely don't need
Frequent Locations or whatever it's called now in iOS 11 and the same goes for
ad tracking, I always turn these off because I don't need my iPhone to build a
list over time of all the places I have been.
But I don't turn off Hey SIRI, lockscreen notifications and a lot of the other
stuff because yes, I do have an iPhone partly because it's accessible and I can
send/receive text messages, check my email on the go, use many apps which make
my life easier and also because I want it to be convenient. For the same reason
I don't turn off cellular data, WiFi or bluetooth, I'd rather find and pay for
a plan which gives me all the data I might want instead of constantly having to
worry that maybe I shouldn't use data because I am going over my limit etc and
if I want to use WiFi or bluetooth I don't want to have to turn it on. I guess
as somebody who has an Apple Watch Bluetooth has to be on anyways if you want
to get any use out of the watch and I rather charge my battery every evening
than to turn off a bunch of stuff just so maybe I can get two days out of it..
But to each their own.

Regards,
Sieghard

Yeah what this article says is you really shouldn't have an IPhone because well
your so worried about privacy. Turn off everything and crawl in to the whole

Re: Hey Siri Question

2017-11-13 Thread Richard Turner

Hey Siri without it being plugged in depends on the hardware, not the iOS.
I do not remember with which hardware, but I suspect it might be the 6s and
beyond.
I know my 5s has to be plugged in.
Also, I thought Siri was more verbal if VoiceOver was on no matter how you
invoked Siri.

Hey SIRI is simply a replacement for pressing and holding the home button.
I can’t remember if Hey SIRI became available when the phone is not plugged in
with iOS 10 or just now with iOS 11. I think it was iOS 10, before it only
worked when the phone was plugged into power.
It also used to respond universally to anybody saying Hey SIRI, now when you
turn on this feature you have to “train” SIRI by saying certain things.
I quite like this feature because I can have the phone sitting on my desk or on
the counter in the kitchen and without ever touching the phone I can say “Hey
SIRI, what is the time” or “Hey SIRI, set a timer for 10 minutes” just to give
two examples.
You can say “Hey SIRI” and wait for the beep and then ask your question or say
your request or you can simply say it all in one sentence, this does work very
well.
We have most of our lights at home equipped with Philipps Hue bulbs so I can
ask SIRI to turn on or off a particular light/room and now with our Schlage
Sense doorlock if I know somebody was going to stop buy I can just say “Hey
SIRI, open the front door” when whoever is coming rings the bell.
Since the noise of the motor for the lock is very noticeable most people sort
of assume that once they hear this it’s OK to come in.

Sieghard

Hi All,

I've never noticed, mainly because I don't say, Hey Siri, hardly ever, but when
you call on Siri with the, Hey Siri, voice command, is Siri supposed to reply

RE: THE ROTOR - IS IT TIME TO THINK AGAIN?

2017-11-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Carool,

The rotor always has been context sensitive, e.g. items like links, form
fields, buttons and so on are only available when you are on a webpage or in an
email where these elements can be found. If you add typing mode then this only
shows up when you are in an edit field etc.
I don’t want to say it can’t be improved, but as far as I am concerned it works
pretty well and it’s pretty smart.

Hi all,

I have been noticing that, with the increase of features and upgrades, so too
have there become more rotor actions that, perhaps, I might want to use, so I
have put them there but found that often the rotor needs a fair amount of
turning to get to a particular option right in the middle. I know some people
find this movement harder to accomplish than others and, whilst I find it easy
enough to do, I am finding that this has become more tedious as the rotor is
used now for so many different options. I have also noticed that, because the
rotor works round in a list, though it doesn't actually do full circle, there
are times when an item that has been selected just does not show up on the
rotor because it's obviously just hit that part where it's not visible, or
something like that.

I am wondering if the time has come for some thought on the part of users and
technicians alike to take some time to convey things in a different way,
perhaps even with two rotors so that items can be placed into two separate
groups. I'd be interested in any experiences and/or thoughts others have had
concerning this.

For example, a lot of the rotor items needed for web searching aren't
necessarily needed when writing a text or an email, so perhaps two groups with
a way to jump easily between them could work.

Anyway, let's see how this grabs everyone - or not, as the case may be!

RE: Please join me in asking Apple to make rotor options consistent again and to fix the delete rotor bug which they say is not a bug

This has already been addressed in iOS 11.1 and the rotor behaviour is now back
to what it was all along.

Sieghard,

Ever since I began reading mail on an ipod, I have actually started by opening
a message and flicking up with two fingers to read from the cursor position.
This was often exactly where I wanted to be. If not, after positioning the
first message, this has worked consistently for me. When I have finished with
the mail, I simply have double tapped the delete button on the message to send
it away to the trash, or moved as required. My box of messages remains opoened
and ready for the next one.

I still do this so avoid probably most of the problems you seem to be having
and it works fine for me.

I appreciate though that people want consistency and I am finding, for example,
that there are inconsistencies in other areas with regard to the rotor
settings, so perhaps I'll address those in the next post.

Usually you check your Inbox, some messages you don’t even open before you want
to delete them, others you might read and want to delete afterwards, no matter
what, you would normally flick up once when ona message in the Inbox, this
would put focus on the “Delete” option and now you simply double tap and the
message is deleted.
This is the same in the Messages app, it works if you want to delete a
Favourite in your Phone app, a recent call and you can use it in many other
places.
After the message or whatever you are deleting has been deleted, for years the
normal behaviour was that “Activate” has focus again. This of course makes
sense because if you flick through the available options, “Activate” also tells
you that it is the default option so of course you would expect that whatever
you do focus returns to it so after you delete a message and if you now want to
read the next message all you have to do is double tap and it opens up.
Now in IOS 11 Apple has decided that in the Mail app only the rotor should
behave differently. Mind you if you go to your Inbox and flick through the
available rotor options, when you get back to activate it still says “Activate,
default”
However, if you flick up to delete and double tap to delete a message and then
double tap again expecting you are going to open the next message in focus you
are sadly mistaken. Apparently the term “default” doesn’t apply any more and
all you just did is delete the next message. Oops, it was an important message
you wanted to keep or reply to? Well, no problem, just back out of your Inbox,
find your delete items, find the message and move it back to the Inbox, then
back out of deleted items and go back to your Inbox. Why, thank you Apple, you
just made my day, I didn’t count how many taps and flicks, scrub gestures and
swipes this takes, but it’s of course ridiculous.
We all know how engrained keystrokes and by now taps and swipes become when you
get used to something, it makes no sense to make “delete” the default action
especially if it still says “Activate” is the default. I also wonder what’s
next, what if Apple decides this should also be so in the Messages app? If you
accidently delete a text message with important information like maybe the link
to the boarding pass you just sent to your phone after checking in to a flight
online then you can’t just tap, swipe and scrub for 30 seconds to get it back,
it’s gone for good which is why allowing Apple to get away with this sets I
think a dangerous precedent.
Looking at the issue from that perspective is concerning and I think it is one
of these times when everybody and I really mean everybody even if you don’t use
the Mail app on the iPhone should send a message to

action which is “activate” is restored, it may not effect you this time, but

Hey SIRI is simply a replacement for pressing and holding the home button.

I can’t remember if Hey SIRI became available when the phone is not plugged
in with iOS 10 or just now with iOS 11. I think it was iOS 10, before it
only worked when the phone was plugged into power.

It also used to respond universally to anybody saying Hey SIRI, now when you
turn on this feature you have to “train” SIRI by saying certain things.

I quite like this feature because I can have the phone sitting on my desk or
on the counter in the kitchen and without ever touching the phone I can say
“Hey SIRI, what is the time” or “Hey SIRI, set a timer for 10 minutes” just
to give two examples.

You can say “Hey SIRI” and wait for the beep and then ask your question or
say your request or you can simply say it all in one sentence, this does
work very well.

Since the noise of the motor for the lock is very noticeable most people
sort of assume that once they hear this it’s OK to come in.

Hey everyone. I'm sending this to multiple lists because this effects everyone.

really hope that Siriusxm hasn't stopped support for Radium or Radium hasn't
stopped support for Siriusxm. If this is the case, I'll be cancelling my
subscription as I refuse to use either the native Siriusxm app on my phone or
the website on my computer because of the timing out thing. We pay for the
service so we should be able to listen to it uninterrupted. Also, there is no

RE: 4 Ways to Make Siri Smarter on Your iPhone, CNET

2017-11-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
OK, I wouldn't go quite that far, I don't think SIRI works any worse now than
it did last year or when I had my 4S and in fact it is smarter in that you can
ask it to make a Whats App call or order an Uber for you and so on, but when it
comes to general knowledge and information it still has a ways to go.

RE: With EarSkins on AirPods, do the AirPods still fit in the case?

2017-11-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Keith,

I bet if you had somebody carefully wrap a bit of medical tape around the
Airpods you would get the same effect.
The might even fit in the charging case with that, you would have to try it, if
it doesn’t work just take it off and you are no worse off.

It does, thanks. I’m considering them for only occasional use when out and
about, having had one fall out into my soup when eating lunch at a restaurant.
Well, actually, it was my salad, but soup makes for a more interesting story.
And, it could have been soup.

If you want to sell your skins and send them in an envelope, I’d be interested.
I’m sure we could figure out a way to get you a few bucks for them. Keith

Hey,

They are not that hard to take on/off. It just becomes a little bit tedious
after awhile. I had a little zipper case from my old head-phones that I used
for several years. I kept them in the pouch and the AirPods in the outer shell.
I found with the ear hooks that I have, if you slide the ear hook over the
bottom extension it was much quicker and easier to put them on. Rather than
trying to put them on over the fat part of the AirPod that goes into the ear.

I mostly have given up on using them by now. I have found that the AirPods
don’t even come close to falling out of my ears.

I hope this helps,

Hey Siri Question

2017-11-13 Thread Mike B.
Hi All,

I've never noticed, mainly because I don't say, Hey Siri, hardly ever, but
when you call on Siri with the, Hey Siri, voice command, is Siri supposed to
reply verbally along with sound, or with just the sound alert? Running the
SE with 10.33. Thanks much.
Take care. Mike. Dodgers, try again next year!

Ed

Apple has made the slot that the EarPods rest in to tight of a fit.

Thanks for the ideas I will employ them. What phone number did you contact for

Yes! Yes! yes! Thank you for saying what I have been feeling for quite some
time about siri. She, he or it is in my opinion, getting more and more

dare I say intelligent? Not so any more and I more often than not resort to

Subject: RE: 4 Ways to Make Siri Smarter on Your iPhone, CNET

Can you give a few examples? Are these phone numbers for people or for
companies? If they are for companies, do you put the name only in the
Company field? If so you have to also add it to Last Name because SIRI is so
stupid (and has been for years) that it doesn't search the company field
only, the company has to be also written in the last name field.
If they are people, do you correctly put their first name in the first name
field and their last name in the last name field?
Do you enter phone numbers in the correct format, it is best to use the
international format even for numbers that are local to you, here is an
example:
Instead of just "1" you should put +1. You get the plus symbol when entering
a phone number by tapping the shift key to the right of the 0, then the 0
becomes the plus symbol.
Now enter the number all without spaces, iOS will format it with parenthesis
around the area code and put a dash after the first 3 digits of the 7-digit
phone number.
When it comes to people I have no issues whatsoever when I ask SIRI to call
somebody unless it's a very unusually pronounced name, but when it comes to
companies SIRI can definitely be very stupid. Especially in iOS 11 even if a
number is in muy contacts SIRI will go and try to look it up online, I fail
to see what is so hard to first get SIRI to look at your contacts to see if
there is a match.
If I do ask SIRI to call a business which I know is not in my contacts at
times SIRI is so stupid that if the business is a chain it will give me
locations in all the cities in a 200 mile radius but not the one that is
half a mile away.
I unfortunately have not noticed much improvement with SIRI in iOS 11 and I
just don't get it how Apple continue to not get this to work.
Here an example. I live in a small town called Smithers. Apart from some
private liquor stores we also still have government run liquor stores here
in British Columbia
If I ask SIRI "Phone number for BC Liquor Store in Smithers" it tells me
here is the number and then proceeds to give me the number of the BC Liquor
Store in Burns Lake, a much smaller town about 2 hours drive from here.
If I ask Google using the exact same wording "Phone number for BC Liquor
Store in Smithers" I get the correct local phone number.
Last night my wife who is from the Philippines and I were talking about an
article about Jolliebee which is a huge fast food franchise in the
Philippines and they are expanding into other countries now including the
US, Canada, China and some european countries. They are in fact the 9th
largest fast food chain in the world. Anyhow, my wife was wondering if they
were around before McDonalds. I assumed correctly that McDonalds was started
much earlier, but that possibly they expanded to the Philippines after
Jolliebee came into existance. So I asked SIRI "When was McDonalds founded".
Of course I received the usual reply "I found something on the web about
when was McDonalds founded, take a look". Maybe the answer was there and a
sighted person may have seen it and might be happy with the answer. I just
ignored it and opened Google, asked the exact same question and received a
spoken answer, short and to the point.
I then even asked "When was the first McDonalds started in the Philippines"
and received the answer "According to McDonalds it was in 1981 when somebody
(forgot the name" started the first Mcdonalds franchise in the Philippines".
At the same time Google told me that Jolliebee was started in the Manila in
1975.
Maybe it's the lack of access Apple has to Google why SIRI can answer so
many fewer questions, but I guess Apple should be able to make a deal with
Bing or some other search engine to find such answers online, maybe they
should just buy DuckDuckGo, it's not like they don't have enough money.

Regards,
Sieghard

Is there a way to make sure when speaking to SIRI that words are spelled
correctly?

One of my daughters is named Lisa. She is in my contacts and when I send a text

I discovered SIRI does this with several other words, so how can I get the

It’s amazing to think how much information we entrust our phones with. From
photos of amazing life events, to specific songs that bring memories rushing
back, the sentimental value of our data is massive.

How worrying then, that we store it on a device that’s so prone to breaking.
Throughout its life a phone faces many dangers, from wet weather to drops onto
hard surfaces that can leave them completely inoperable.

You shouldn’t take that risk when it comes to your data, and regularly backing
it up is a routine you should absolutely have. Just a couple of minutes spent
every week will mean that if the worst should happen, you’ll still have access
to all those memories that you’ve spent years accumulating on your device.

iTunes works in a pinch if you want to keep a copy of your files, but for our
tutorial today we’re going to be using WinX
MediaTrans. It’s a very versatile piece of
software that allows you to easily backup your music (other file types such as
photos, videos, ringtones, voice memos and ebooks are also supported), and
includes a range of features to keep your files in good condition, including
allowing you to easily edit artist and album info.

So without further ado, here’s how to transfer your music to a computer.

1. Free Download WinX MediaTrans

There are two versions of WinX MediaTrans available, a free version and a
premium version. Upgrading to the premium
version (lifetime licenses) allows
you to transfer unlimited files per day and also unlocks a host of other
features such as allowing you to remove DRM from
tracks.
You'll also benefit from improved performance in lifetime free upgrade.

We’re going to use the free version of the program for this tutorial but you’re
free to upgrade at a later date if you want to use its expanded features. The
company offers a 30-day refund program if you’re not completely satisfied with
your purchase.

Head on over to the official website and
click the ‘Free Download’ link to get the installer, and then run it to get the
program installed on your PC.

2. Plug in your iPhone

3. Select 'Music Manager'

Once you’ve got the program up and running, select the ‘Music Manager’ option
from the main menu.

You’ll see a page prompting you to plug your iPhone into your computer, so do
so now. You’ll need to tell your phone to trust your computer to continue, and
you might have to enter your passcode to prove it’s you.

At this point the software will disable auto-sync on iTunes to prevent the
program from automatically erasing your data. Remember to re-enable this later
if it’s a feature that you use. You’ll also have to close iTunes at this point
(if you do not have iTunes on your computer, then this window won't pop up).

4. Transfer your music selectively or in a batch

Any music stored locally on your iPhone will be auto-detected and shown in the
MediaTrans window.

Check that the track details are all accurate (if not you can change them by
hovering over the file and clicking the ‘Edit Music’ button), and once you’re
ready it’s now a simple process to tick the boxes next to any songs you want to
transfer to your computer. Select ‘Export’ from the row of icons on the top,
and then click ‘Continue’ on the next screen.

Once the files are imported, their folder will automatically open up. By
default this will be contained within a ‘MediaTrans’ folder within your main

2017-11-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Can you give a few examples? Are these phone numbers for people or for
companies? If they are for companies, do you put the name only in the Company
field? If so you have to also add it to Last Name because SIRI is so stupid
(and has been for years) that it doesn't search the company field only, the
company has to be also written in the last name field.
If they are people, do you correctly put their first name in the first name
field and their last name in the last name field?
Do you enter phone numbers in the correct format, it is best to use the
international format even for numbers that are local to you, here is an example:
Instead of just "1" you should put +1. You get the plus symbol when entering a
phone number by tapping the shift key to the right of the 0, then the 0 becomes
the plus symbol.
Especially in iOS 11 even if a
number is in muy contacts SIRI will go and try to look it up online, I fail to
see what is so hard to first get SIRI to look at your contacts to see if there
is a match.
If I do ask SIRI to call a business which I know is not in my contacts at
times SIRI is so stupid that if the business is a chain it will give me
locations in all the cities in a 200 mile radius but not the one that is half a
mile away.
I unfortunately have not noticed much improvement with SIRI in iOS 11 and I
just don't get it how Apple continue to not get this to work.
Here an example. I live in a small town called Smithers. Apart from some
private liquor stores we also still have government run liquor stores here in
British Columbia
If I ask SIRI "Phone number for BC Liquor Store in Smithers" it tells me here
is the number and then proceeds to give me the number of the BC Liquor Store in
Burns Lake, a much smaller town about 2 hours drive from here.
If I ask Google using the exact same wording "Phone number for BC Liquor Store
in Smithers" I get the correct local phone number.
Last night my wife who is from the Philippines and I were talking about an
article about Jolliebee which is a huge fast food franchise in the Philippines
and they are expanding into other countries now including the US, Canada, China
and some european countries. They are in fact the 9th largest fast food chain
in the world. Anyhow, my wife was wondering if they were around before
McDonalds. I assumed correctly that McDonalds was started much earlier, but
that possibly they expanded to the Philippines after Jolliebee came into
existance. So I asked SIRI "When was McDonalds founded". Of course I received
the usual reply "I found something on the web about when was McDonalds founded,
take a look". Maybe the answer was there and a sighted person may have seen it
and might be happy with the answer. I just ignored it and opened Google, asked
the exact same question and received a spoken answer, short and to the point.
I then even asked "When was the first McDonalds started in the Philippines" and
received the answer "According to McDonalds it was in 1981 when somebody
(forgot the name" started the first Mcdonalds franchise in the Philippines".
At the same time Google told me that Jolliebee was started in the Manila in
1975.
Maybe it's the lack of access Apple has to Google why SIRI can answer so many
fewer questions, but I guess Apple should be able to make a deal with Bing or
some other search engine to find such answers online, maybe they should just
buy DuckDuckGo, it's not like they don't have enough money.

Regards,
Sieghard

SIRI & spelling

2017-11-13 Thread Vicki W.
Is there a way to make sure when speaking to SIRI that words are spelled
correctly?

One of my daughters is named Lisa. She is in my contacts and when I send a text
to her, SIRI does it correctly. However, if I mention her name in a text, SIRI
spells it L E A S A and her name is spelled L I S A.

I discovered SIRI does this with several other words, so how can I get the
dictated text messages to spell correctly?

Thanks.

Vicki

How to easily transfer iPhone music to a computer using WinX MediaTrans

2017-11-13 Thread Mary Otten
I ran across this article, and if this application is accessible, it could be a
boon for PC users who don’t like iTunes, or who just want a different way of
doing things. Good luck.

How to easily transfer iPhone music to a computer using WinX MediaTrans
TechRadar - All the latest technology news / Sponsored

It’s amazing to think how much information we entrust our phones with. From
photos of amazing life events, to specific songs that bring memories rushing
back, the sentimental value of our data is massive.

How worrying then, that we store it on a device that’s so prone to breaking.
Throughout its life a phone faces many dangers, from wet weather to drops onto
hard surfaces that can leave them completely inoperable.

You shouldn’t take that risk when it comes to your data, and regularly backing
it up is a routine you should absolutely have. Just a couple of minutes spent
every week will mean that if the worst should happen, you’ll still have access
to all those memories that you’ve spent years accumulating on your device.

iTunes works in a pinch if you want to keep a copy of your files, but for our
tutorial today we’re going to be using WinX MediaTrans. It’s a very versatile
piece of software that allows you to easily backup your music (other file types
such as photos, videos, ringtones, voice memos and ebooks are also supported),
and includes a range of features to keep your files in good condition,
including allowing you to easily edit artist and album info.

So without further ado, here’s how to transfer your music to a computer.

1. Free Download WinX MediaTrans

There are two versions of WinX MediaTrans available, a free version and a
premium version. Upgrading to the premium version (lifetime licenses) allows
you to transfer unlimited files per day and also unlocks a host of other
features such as allowing you to remove DRM from tracks. You'll also benefit
from improved performance in lifetime free upgrade.

We’re going to use the free version of the program for this tutorial but you’re
free to upgrade at a later date if you want to use its expanded features. The
company offers a 30-day refund program if you’re not completely satisfied with
your purchase.

Head on over to the official website and click the ‘Free Download’ link to get
the installer, and then run it to get the program installed on your PC.

By
default this will be contained within a ‘MediaTrans’ folder within your main
music folder, but you can change this option easily within the settings menu
(accessed from the top right of the window).

That’s all there is to it. Be sure to backup your music regularly or as your
library changes, and you can be sure to keep your entire collection intact
should the worst happen and your phone break unexpectedly.

For a full rundown of the differences between using WinX MediaTrans to transfer
music versus iTunes, check out the table below.

For a full rundown of the differences between the two pieces of software, check
out WinX MediaTrans vs iTunes.

As well as being a simple and effective method to transfer music and manage
your iPhone, WinX MediaTrans also serves as an iPhone video/audio converter.
When transferring videos to iPhone, this software can auto-rotate to ensure
full-screen playback and reduce file size to 50% off without quality loss. It
can also directly make ringtones from your music and turn your iPhone iPad into
a free USB drive to store files.

You can download the program here: WinX MediaTrans

Invitation to closed testing round for accessible Trello mac app

2017-11-13 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi everyone,

As I am one of the directors of my startup, I am required to fulfill daily
organisational tasks, and have an overview of the entire processes our business
is going through. This includes a variety of sections such as hardware,
software, finances, coms, the list goes on. ALl this needs to be centrally
visible and manageable without going through undreds of text files or dropbox
folders.

I had looked for various efficient organisational apps such as Jira, Assana,
trello and MS project but none really have a smooth, fast way of doing things.
As they are heavily visual, it is hard to get a proper synthesis of what is
going on, who added what where and what to search for.

So I wrote a wrapper for Trello in swift, and now have a complete suite with an
interface, currently produced for the mac but that can easily be ported to IOS.

I would like to make a closed invitation for those of you who code in swift to
test the app, and it’s efficacy in your daily tasks.

So far, it has everything from boards, lists, cards, checklists, checkItems,
comments, attachments, labels, actions, and works nicely with webhooks through
apple’s remote push notification service. I’ve also written a backend PHP set
to manage individual users, tokens and push the right messages to the right
devices. There are stereo sound cues to alert the user of what is going on, as
well as new actions being performed by others.

I am currently trying to finish the initial OAuth process as well as getting a
proper calendar up with NSCollectionView for deadlines so that non coders can
use this for their everyday task management.

if you have an interest in getting more efficient with your daily organisation
and have registered a trello account, shoot me an email with your github
username and I will invite you to the private repo to see if it can be rendered
more efficient than it currently is.

So far I have a few friends, also blind who are using it, and they are really
liking the fast access to every object in your team and boards. one is using it
now for his accelerator program at uni, and the other is using it for his wly
those ork as a clinical psychologist. A few more blind professionals are also
using it in both accessibility and education.

I think that we as blind users should have the same level of access to every
service out there, especially to enhance our productivity. To do this, the
paradigm has to be seen from the perspective of a screen reader user. Not a
visual user, and this is why I wrote VITrello.

Have a great week y’all
