Re: Travel abroad

2017-12-15 Thread Shai
Hi,
I would also recommend checking the cost for going to Africa with
T-Mobile. With their current plans here in the US, they have good
prices on international roaming for calling data and text.

RE: Travel abroad

2017-12-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It's all GSM, in some way it might be easier with a 5S in such countries since
more people may have phones which still use Micro SIM cards.
You said you are going to South Africa, will you also go to other countries?
I think Fanus might be better equipped to make statements about the risk of
theft and so on.
I would call T-Mobile or go to one of their stores, they can probably tell you
if the phone is locked to them, there is a good chance it is, but they can
unlock it for you.
I'll CC Fanus on this email in case he doesn't see it on the list and he can
reply to you, maybe direct is the way to go unless others are interested in
this discussion.

Regards,
Sieghard

I was about to mention to check whether you had a CDMA or GSM phone, but since
you said T-Mobile... Pretty much the entire world uses GSM, but I think a few
Caribbean and Asian countries and the US use CDMA, but truth be told, I have no
idea about Africa. You may want to check on that as well to be sure.

Who is your carrier here and when did you get your phone?
I assume you are in the US? If so then as far as I know only Verizon phones are
unlocked.
Easiest way to find out for sure is if you have a friend or family member who
has a phone with the same size SIM (most likely a Nano SIM unless you are still
on an iPhone 5S which I believe had a Micro SIM and if said person uses a
different provider. Just take out your SIM and put in his or her SIM, if you
get service on their carrier your phone is unlocked.
OK, I should say most likely unlocked, if they use an MVNO (mobile virtual
network operator) who works on the same network as the main carriers than it is
possible or likely that a locked aT phone would work with a SIM from an MVNO
using the AT network. But if you are with AT and a friend is with T-Mobile
or Verizon and their SIM works in your phone then it's definitely unlocked.

Take care,

Hi Marilyn,

What african country or countries will you be visiting?
Here some general advice from somebody who has travelled quite a lot. I haven't
been to Africa, but I have been to the Philippines quite a lot because my wife
is from there and also to Thailand and Laos and in travelling there I have been
through South Korea, China, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

1. Insure your phone against theft, you should ask your home insurance, I could
add my phone with a $100 deductable for a mere $35 or so a year and that covers
loss, theft and damage.
2. Keep your phone out of sight in public as much as possible. Again, it may
depend a bit on where you are going, but if you do go to countries where a lot
of people are relatively poor an iPhone is a huge prize/incentive for theft.
3. As for using your phone, if it is unlocked you can buy a local SIM in
whatever country you go to and put it into your phone. This will give you a
local number and access to whatever prepaid plans are available. You probably
will have more use for data than for calling and SMS so try to find a plan
which gives you as much data as possible.
4. Don't expect very fast data speeds or even the greatest coverage, we take a
lot for granted in our highly developed countries.

If you are going to South Africa maybe Fanus can chime in and give you some
advice as to which carriers might have the best prepaid plans.

RE: Travel abroad

2017-12-15 Thread Cristóbal

Take care,
Sieghard

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hi all, I agree with you in every way Siri is still pretty stupid she messes it
all the time instead of knowing anything she always wants to look it up on the
web and comes up with things that are not even relevant. I can also say Siri is
not ever serious! About getting anything right six! If Siri was in a football
game Siri would’ve lost in the first inning.

Weather App & Enhanced Icon Display

2017-12-15 Thread Bill Gallik
Hi All;

I’m wondering if there is a weather app that will display basic information in
the Icon display. I’m thinking of the Calendar app that displays the date in
the Icon display and the Clock app that displays the current time of day with
the Icon.

I would appreciate an weather app that would include the current temp and very
basic condition with the Icon. For instance; it would be nice if a Weather app
would (optionally) include something like “62 degrees & Sunny” or “78 degrees &
Partly Cloudy” or “27 Degrees & Snow Flurries."

If there is no such app, then just how would somebody go about putting a
request that the native Weather App be enhanced to include such basic
information in the Icon Display?

Yes, but that is something I turned off first, for me this is much more of an

Hi Sieghard,
You can also turn on the raise to wake feature then all you have to do is raise
your iPhone up and rest your finger on the home button and it will open. That
way you do not have to push any buttons to open your iPhone.

You go to Accessibility settings and then look for “Home button”.
At the very bottom is a button called “Rest Finger to Open”, make sure this is
set to “On”.
It’s actually one item up from the bottom, the very last thing is the
explanation for it:
Open iPhone with Touch Id, without having to press the home button.
Of course you still have to wake up the iPhone first by either pressing the
home button or the power/sleep button on the side.
If you turn this on you can usually just press the home button and after you
let go just keep your finger on it for a moment and it will unlock.
Glad re-entering your fingerprint fixed the problem, still a good idea though
to make sure the home button (and the screen) are nice and clean, all sorts of
weird things can happen if they get too dirty. It’s

what was going on. Someone on the list mentioned to be sure and set it up so
you can just put your finger on the home button rather than actually pushing
it. If that is possible, where do you set that up at? I didn’t see it in the
finger print section of settings, although I think my phone was doing that
before this mess started. Thanks.

Re: Siri is still pretty stupid

2017-12-15 Thread Jewel
It annoys me when I ask Siri about something and, instead of giving me an
answer, he, merely, brings
up a website which I have to sort out with my finger.
I do remember that, in my early days as an iPhone user, he would ask me if I
wantede him to read it
to me, but I haven't had that request, now, for yonks and then more yonks!

Yes, Mary said it very well for us all! I too feel there are just too
many occasions when you ask a simple question and he/she just doesn't
understand and give a meaningful answer. I'm tired of being asked if I
want to read something on the Web. I want Siri to go on speaking what
he/she reads because that's why I've asked for his/her help, because I
want the information and I want it quickly!

At present, most assistants have this quirk when sometimes they know an
answer or how to do something and other times they just say they don't
know. As others have said, Siri was the first and he/she should be
leading the way for sure!

2017-12-15 Thread Michael Irons
Hi all, I agree with you in every way Siri is still pretty stupid she messes it
all the time instead of knowing anything she always wants to look it up on the
web and comes up with things that are not even relevant. I can also say Siri is
not ever serious! About getting anything right six! If Siri was in a football
game Siri would’ve lost in the first inning.

Re: rainbow II color identifier now available

2017-12-15 Thread 'Carol Pearson' via VIPhone

Louise,

I'm in the UK and, if you get to talk to them and you can do it, I'd
really like to know of other shipping options, but their web site
(perhaps because they haven't yet got any) doesn't have a link (ikt
seems) when I read the word "here" on their page.

If anyone actually has one, I'd really like to know how it does with
patterned items, since these almost always cause problems, but I am keen
to get a better one than I have so would appreciate all feedback.

Thanks.

Re: Siri is still pretty stupid

2017-12-15 Thread 'Carol Pearson' via VIPhone
Yes, Mary said it very well for us all! I too feel there are just too
many occasions when you ask a simple question and he/she just doesn't
understand and give a meaningful answer. I'm tired of being asked if I
want to read something on the Web. I want Siri to go on speaking what
he/she reads because that's why I've asked for his/her help, because I
want the information and I want it quickly!

At present, most assistants have this quirk when sometimes they know an
answer or how to do something and other times they just say they don't
know. As others have said, Siri was the first and he/she should be
leading the way for sure!

Well, Siri, since I already gave you the street name of the store

Google does this and so does Alexa. But good old Siri still can't

Sounds on ios 11.2

2017-12-15 Thread Gordon
I've been experiencing this strange thing with sounds since 11.2 and I
wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this as well. There are
times when sounds don't play when notifications come in. For example
I've missed several texts lately that are there but the sound didn't
play when they come in. I find out about them from the badge on the home
screen. but this morning was the big one when the alarm sound didn't
play making my daughter late for school. The alarm was on and is the
same alarm that I use for every week day. but this morning the sound
didn't play. I haven't made any changes to my sounds or anything like
that. When she goes back in January from Christmas break I'll use my
iPhone and echo to have a second backup alarm just in case.

RE: mystery of the disappearing apps?

2017-12-15 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
These apps will stay on your phone if you upgrade to IOS 11, but I believe the
situation applies more to when you get a new phone and restore from a backup.
I recently upgraded from an iPhone 6S to an iPhone 8, and did a restore from an
iCloud backup. The apps that were 32-bit did not get restored on my new phone.

I don't know if this is your problem but this is my expeerience..When setting
up a new phone or restoring a phone from a backup, if the apps are no longer in
the app store or won't work on my current version of IOS the apps won't be
installed onto my device. If Im incorrect hopefully someone will correct me &

hello all,
the last time I got a new iPhone, and restored from an iTunes backup, I noticed
that a few of my apps seemed to have not been installed on to the new phone. no
matter what I did, I couldn't get them back, even by making another backup from
an iPhone that I knew they are on, they still didn't install across to the new
phone. is iTunes starting to get a bit selective, and not copy or install apps
that it thinks won't work with later IOS versions or something?
as that's the only answer I can come up with, unless something is going wrong.

Hi all,
Hope this mail finds you well.
Currently use a iphone 6. What are the benefits of upgrading to one
of the recently launched phones viz. 8, 8+ or X, from a VI
perspective? Also, what are the comparative advantages of X over 8?
Looking forward to constructive suggestions.

I think when it downloads it's just called Home. You can ask Siri to
open it as Google Home I think.

RE: Fing print problem solved

2017-12-15 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi Sieghard,

You can also turn on the raise to wake feature then all you have to do is raise
your iPhone up and rest your finger on the home button and it will open. That
way you do not have to push any buttons to open your iPhone.

Mr. Ed

It’s

Well, I deleted my finger print and redid it and it works fine now. Don’t know
what was going on. Someone on the list mentioned to be sure and set it up so
you can just put your finger on the home button rather than actually pushing
it. If that is possible, where do you set that up at? I didn’t see it in the
finger print section of settings, although I think my phone was doing that
before this mess started. Thanks.

Re: Messaging App Question

2017-12-15 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hi,

Actually, I tapped on the offending message and, under 'Details', I saw that
'Hide Alerts' was toggled 'on'. I toggled it to 'off' and 'Muted' was gone.
How it got toggled to 'on' for this one individual is a total mystery.
Thanks for the reply.

RE: Advantages of upgrading to a new phone

2017-12-15 Thread Chip Orange
These are all good points ... I'll just add that a weak battery can be fixed
much more cheaply with something like a Mophie battery/case than paying for a
new phone.

I can't remember for certain when NFC was added to iPhones, seems like it was
the 6S models, so I would upgrade if I had a phone without nfc just to have
ApplePay, which is a great convenience to the VI user when available.

i recently upgraded from an iPhone 6 to an iPhone 8. I had had the 6 for 3
years. It still worked fine, but it seemed that I was getting less battery
life, probably due to time and repeated charging. I also noticed that after
updating to IOS 11, the phone ran noticably slower. I chose the 8 because I
liked the form factor, and I wanted the home button. The 8 runs much faster.
I didn't want the X because i didn't want a larger phone, and I wanted the
home button.

hello all,
the last time I got a new iPhone, and restored from an iTunes backup, I noticed
that a few of my apps seemed to have not been installed on to the new phone. no
matter what I did, I couldn't get them back, even by making another backup from
an iPhone that I knew they are on, they still didn't install across to the new
phone. is iTunes starting to get a bit selective, and not copy or install apps
that it thinks won't work with later IOS versions or something?
as that's the only answer I can come up with, unless something is going wrong.

RE: Fing print problem solved

2017-12-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Thanks.

An app that'll audiodescribe films outside the United States?

2017-12-15 Thread Gerardo Corripio
You guys have been talking about an app which I understand you install,
and when going to the movie theater in the US., the film is
audiodescribed, thus I wonder what infrastructure does the movie theater
need to have in order for if the app in question would work here in
Mexico, for instance,in the Cinepolis movie theater chain? Thanks for
tips and ideas. It'd be an awesome experience going to the movies and
not have to ask whoever is accompanying me, what's happening every so often!

Re: Big Seeing AI update

2017-12-15 Thread Chris Chaffin

Remember in order for all updates to show that it is sometimes necessary to do
a 3 finger swipe down while on the updates screen to refresh the screen. Try
this to see if it shows up for you.

Hope this helps,

Re: mystery of the disappearing apps?

2017-12-15 Thread goshawk on horseback
the "no longer in the app store" thing I hope still only applies to iCloud
backups, not iTunes ones, as I did have that issue when I first started off
with iPhones. that's why I only use iTunes backups to restore from now, as
until recently, there were no disappearing app issues.

I don't know if this is your problem but this is my expeerience..When setting
up a new phone or restoring a phone from a backup, if the apps are no longer in
the app store or won't work on my current version of IOS the apps won't be
installed onto my device. If Im incorrect hopefully someone will correct me &
offer you a solution.

  Donna

hello all,
the last time I got a new iPhone, and restored from an iTunes backup, I
noticed that a few of my apps seemed to have not been installed on to the new
phone. no matter what I did, I couldn't get them back, even by making another
backup from an iPhone that I knew they are on, they still didn't install across
to the new phone. is iTunes starting to get a bit selective, and not copy or
install apps that it thinks won't work with later IOS versions or something?
as that's the only answer I can come up with, unless something is going
wrong.

Simon

Re: Battery Plunge

2017-12-15 Thread Chris Chaffin

Normally when you see behavior like this, it means that you need to recalibrate
your battery. It is recommended to do this after every major ios upgrade for
best battery performance. For more information, here is an article that list
all necessary information.

If you get a brandnew phone SIRI won’t respond when you turn the phone on for

on, the largest capasity on the X is 256GB.

hello all,
have been given an early upgrade offer, so am thinking about going for the
iPhone X. as it doesn't seem to have a home button to triple click to easily
turn voice-over on however, is there a way to get voice-over going that is as
easy to do?
also, what is the largest amount of storage available on the iPhone X?

RE: Battery Plunge

Ever since updating to iOS11 my battery status has been doing really strange
things. I've seen the dramatic plunges in percentage though not to 0 in a
matter of minutes. I have also seen strange bounces in battery percentage like
93% that suddenly plunges to 50 or less then shoots back to around 90 when the
phone has not been plugged in or charged in any way. Often I can correct the
behavior by powering down the phone, but it only fixes it for a time. I chalked
it up to iOS11 but I don't know for sure. This is the first post I've seen from
someone who also has been seeing this behavior.

"Null" When Searching in Dropbox

2017-12-15 Thread K. Scott Carlson

Hi,

I have a very large number of files on my Dropbox, some of which I'd
like to access by searching them. However, when I type in something to
the search field and then look at the results, everything comes up as
"null". There is no file name. Is there a way around this? Will it be
fixed in an update?

It seems a bit random because I am running iOS11 on an iPhone 7 and I
never saw the update under the update tab. What I did was delete the
app from my phone then redownload it. When it redownloaded I had the
updated version. Very strange.

Fing print problem solved

2017-12-15 Thread Tom Rash
Well, I deleted my finger print and redid it and it works fine now. Don't
know what was going on. Someone on the list mentioned to be sure and set it
up so you can just put your finger on the home button rather than actually
pushing it. If that is possible, where do you set that up at? I didn't see
it in the finger print section of settings, although I think my phone was
doing that before this mess started. Thanks.

RE: mystery of the disappearing apps?

2017-12-15 Thread Mike Ulrich
If those lost apps were good back in the old IOS 10.3.3 timeline, then a person
updated to IOS 11 ETC, then those lost apps might not have been compatible with
the new IOS?

Ergo; they wouldn’t remain on your IPhone.

Just a thought and my 1.09 cents worth..

up a new phone or restoring a phone from a backup, if the apps are no longer in
the app store or won't work on my current version of IOS the apps won't be

hello all,

the last time I got a new iPhone, and restored from an iTunes backup, I noticed
that a few of my apps seemed to have not been installed on to the new phone. no
matter what I did, I couldn't get them back, even by making another backup from
an iPhone that I knew they are on, they still didn't install across to the new
phone. is iTunes starting to get a bit selective, and not copy or install apps
that it thinks won't work with later IOS versions or something?

as that's the only answer I can come up with, unless something is going wrong.

Hello Maria,

For whatever reason, I suspect that the app is not getting automatic
permission to access your phone's camera.

Consequently, in the Settings area of the device, grant access to the camera
and you should be good to go. This setting can be found in the privacy area
of iOS.
