Hello.
I have noticed that while in a group of messages, and I flick down to delete a
group of messages, and then respond to the delete confirmation, I am placed
back at the Edit button at the top left of the screen, instead of focus being
in the list of messages right where I left off.
Is anyone else experiencing this behavior?
Thanks.

Thank you Candy. I think I learned something new. Of course, sometimes when you
don’t do something very often you forget how to do it. I don’t know if this is
one of those or I did not know that. However, thank you so much it worked like
a miracle!

Re: Dictating new phone contact.

2018-05-18 Thread Richard Turner
Also, you cannot dictate the phone number, you will have to enter it manually.
Also, when in editing mode in a field, a two finger double tap will begin
dictation and the same gesture will stop dictation.

I am Kitty in cincinnati oh. I have bee using iphone since sept or oct. It
sounds like you are getting the “enable dictation” error because dictation is
not turned on. To enable it, open settings and double tap on general. From
there, swipe or flick right till you come to keyboard. Double tap on it. Move
to the right till u see enable dictation. Double tap on it. Once it has been
enabled, it will stay on till u change the setting. Let me know how it works

Re: iPhone verses iPad

2018-05-18 Thread Mary Otten
Well, I always use my mini in portrait mode. Same when I had my old iPad
original version. And no, the mail doesn’t work like it does on the phone. Your
landscape mode sounds better, because at least you have the message on the
right side of the screen I guess, based on my understanding of your
description. I guess I just like it having a list of messages and then I can do
what I want in there and if I want to read one, I just double tap. I think it
reminds me of more how I do mail on the PC. Go through the list, see something
I want, and press insert down arrow in my case to read the message with
Thunderbird.

For those who may be interested, Direct TV Has an accessibility feature built
right in. a friend who has Direct Tv says it is fully accessible. If you're
interested you might check with your provider and have them set it up.
Apparently you can record from it, get the guide, find out what is on the DVD
and more.
God bless!

OK… I am going to try and explain this best I can. I went to the discovery tab,
then to networks, then found the network I wanted to record… After that, I
swiped to two on now, and then I swiped to the left most unlabeled buttons… I
clicked that, and it showed a bunch of shows. I swiped up until I found the
show that I wanted, and since it was not currently on, (it was in the future),
I clicked on it with the remote. It gave me the record episode button! I hope
this helps. If you need me to clarify, I am more than willing to do so.

Direct tv now update is not friendly with voice over.
 Hi everyone.
The current direct tv now update makes the guide extremely
difficult to navigate with voice over.
You may want to hold off on updating until the bugs are worked out.
This update does include a cloud DVR with twenty hours of storage free.

Addendum To: RE: VoiceOver, Apple Maps, Yelp, and Google Trips Make for a Fabulous Vacation

2018-05-18 Thread M. Taylor
Oops! I hit the send button before I finished my reply. See below:

Hello Ann,

The Amazon Go app is for use in any Amazon Go store. While I went to the one
in Seattle, I thought they had locations in both San Francisco and New York
City, as well. I may be mistaken on that fact.

Yes, in my original post, I meant Apple Maps.

As I recently posted to Mac Visionaries:

Sometimes, I feel so trapped by my blindness. There's a whole world out there
and I would truly love to see it and be a part of it.

More often than not, I find it extremely difficult to work up enough courage to
try new things but, sometimes, only sometimes mind you, with the help of mobile
technology such as iPhone, I manage to succeed for a little while. (smile)

Subject: VoiceOver, Apple Maps, Yelp, and Google Trips Make for a Fabulous
Vacation

Hello Everyone,

I just returned from a 4-day mini vacation to Seattle, Washington.

I planned my entire sightseeing excursions using the Google Trips app. In
addition, I used the Apple Maps transit directions and walking directions the
entire time. All of this via VoiceOver. Oh, yes, I used Yelp, extensively,
also.

Seattle has a mono-rail, a light rail system, and several bus systems. It is
truly a metropolitan destination.

I stayed at a hotel in downtown Seattle. So, for example, I took the light
rail to the downtown area and then walked about 20 minutes to my hotel. The
Apple Maps directions were perfect. I really liked the fact that I could
easily track each train stop along the way so that I knew exactly where to exit
the coach. I did not realize, until this trip that one can use swiping
gestures to navigate along any transit route in order to monitor one's progress
along the route. Very, very impressive.

I won't bore you with the details but I will tell you that, thanks to the
Google Trips app, along with Apple Maps, and Yelp, I toured the Space Needle,
went to the Waterfall Garden Park, home of the original UPS store, took an
underground city tour, took a 1-hour harbor crews tour, explored Pike Square,
Pioneer Square, Bell Town, the Market Square, went to the original Starbucks,
took a ride on the largest Ferris Wheel on the west coast, shopped at the new
Amazon Go store (an absolutely amazing experience, to say the least), and ate
at some marvelous restaurants.

My point? I used public transportation, only. No Uber, Lift, or taxis.
Also, I decided what I was going to do, mostly on the fly, using the Google
Trips app.

Now I'm not saying that the trip didn't have its challenges, for example, there
is a lot of construction going on in downtown Seattle and I needed a lot of
sighted assistance in order to navigate around it, but I am saying that I am
certain I would not have had as much fun without my beloved iPHone
8 Plus and several very crucial apps such as Yelp, Apple Maps, the Amazon Go
app, and of course, Google Trips for iOS.

Now I am not suggesting that a blind or low vision person can rely on any
technology, alone, in order to explore a major city. After all, at this point
in history, technology is far from perfect. And, when it's all said and done,
what really made my vacation possible, was good old fashion people skills as
sighted assistance was absolutely necessary for many of the activities
described above. Be that as it may, with the help of technology, I was able to
independently explore the major city attractions and decide how I wanted to
spend my time.

Let me add that, while I had a backup battery with me, I did not use it.
The battery life on my 8 Plus was beyond amazing. Even after over 12 hours of
use, I didn't run out of juice. Regardless, I was glad to have a mobile
charging source with me, just in case.

While I had a lot of fun, I am delightfully exhausted and glad to be back.
For, as the saying goes, "there's no place like home." (smile)

Subject: What to do when speaker comes and I have the phone against my ear.

How do I get the speaker to turn off on my iPhone SE, when it comes on in a
conversation. It has happened twice, and putting the phone to my ear does not
solve the problem. Actually, I did not realize I moved it that far from my ear
to cause it to go on speaker. I realize that the device is sensitive, so it
could be that some unnoticeable movement could have triggered it, but, oh my
goodness, what to do to stop it, please? Thanks.

2018-05-18 Thread Jim Fettgather
Hello.
I have noticed that while in a group of messages, and I flick down to
delete a group of messages, and then respond to the delete
confirmation, I am placed back at the Edit button at the top left of
the screen, instead of focus being in the list of messages right where
I left off.
Is anyone else experiencing this behavior?
Thanks.

RE: The best color identifyer that would work on an Iphone 5s

2018-05-18 Thread Richard Petty
Recognizing color and status of LEDs would be so helpful. To my knowledge,
there are no longer any standalone light detectors available in the U.S. That
makes having the feature on an IOS device all the more important.

Hi,

Something I have noticed, when we discuss these colour identifier apps is:
people don't seem to grasp the fact that colours are merely light waves, and
so, change according to the light source. Electric lights change the colour,
compared with daylight or sunshine. So, in different circumstances, you get
different results. Saying this, when I use the seeing ai app, it quite often
says "grey" when the article is absolutely not grey. Also, i am wondering, if
there is more than the chosen article visible on the screen, how does the app
choose which colour to identify? For example, a red flowered vest on a white
bed cover?

If it helps at all, I have found camfind to be very good at recognising
articles and describing patterns and colours.

Just my thoughts, but something I would love to see if an app which had and
"led" mode, which would tell me the status of led lights, how many are visible,
what is their status, blinking, colour etc.

Thanks, Sandy.

Unfortunately this is a problem that happens occasionally. The Apple techs are
aware of it but no solution thus far. When it happens, press the home button
quickly and it will turn it off. I wish I had better news for you but no go.

 Hi everyone.
The current direct tv now update makes the guide extremely
difficult to navigate with voice over.
You may want to hold off on updating until the bugs are worked out.
This update does include a cloud DVR with twenty hours of storage free.

RE: Phone settings for the 8 Plus

My husband figured out to get rid of that raise to wake too. I think I'm
getting better battery time too now.

Best regards,

Hello Bill,

Go to Settings, and choose Display & Brightness. One of the options on that
screen is Raise to Wake. If you turn it off, your phone won't talk when you
move it around if the screen is locked.

As for making gestures you don't intend, I would suggest going to Settings,
choosing General, then Accessibility, then VoiceOver. On that screen is an
option called VoiceOver Practice. If you double-tap that, you open a screen
where you can try out the various gestures. VoiceOver will tell you which
gesture it thinks you performed and what that gesture does. Once you get
familiar with the gestures, you're less likely to perform ones you didn't
intend. there's a done button in the upper right corner of the screen that you
can use to stop practicing.

I hope that helps.

Best,
Anna

When I jiggle or bump it even slightly, the phone speaks, which can be

church.

Also, the touch seems very sensitive to the slightest tap, for
instance, when I hit the home button, sometimes the phone opens a program such

What do I need to adjust, and where do I find those settings.

Thank you, Kitty. I did finally get it on with help from a nice lady, Regina at
Apple Accessibility. Now, here's what I'm not getting is when I press it, do I
say first or first and last name; then do I double tap? Then can I dictate the
number or dial it? Thanks, Kitty.

I live in Sanford, NC, and just abouteveryone I know here (sighted) have

Hi Carolyn, Just wanted to introduce myself and help you get dictation going.
Let me know how it works
for you.

I went to contacts and got to add, then to dictation, and it said enable
dictation. What do I do to enable dictation. I double tapped and tried to find
something. My friend said her phone did not say that.

This is why I make heavy use of containers on the iPad, especially in the
settings app. It makes navigating to the item you have chosen much easier.

I mainly use my iPad for reading books. Where it makes a difference to me
as opposed to using my iPhone is when reading Kindle books. There is a
noticeable pause when switching pages, so it doesn't seem as intrusive to me
since with the larger screen, the pauses are less frequent.

All a matter of what works best for the individual.

lot more frustrating for me on the iPAD. I find myself strongly gravitating
to my iPHONE for pretty much everything other than consuming audio or binge
reading. For instance, it's nice to be able to listen to internet radio
without burning though my iPOD batteries and taking up my iPHONE. That
leaves the iPHONE free for other things. However, if I'm working, or want to
be ready to do other things while listening or reding, I'll use my iPHONE.
Other than easier use of Braille screen input, I can't think of any
advantages to using an iPAD other than the headphone jak.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the layouts of a whole lot of apps and
things are very different as the designers attempt to use the extra space in
the best way for sighted users. It can feel like starting from square one
despite using the exact same apps and operating system as on your phone. I'm
still glad I was able to get the iPAD due to the guide I'm in the process of
writing. I'll be able to pint all this out and give exaples so my readers
will hopefully make a more informed decision. I have a lot of spacial
perceptin issues so that's doubtless a big part of why I so strongly prefer
my iPHONE's smaller size. The smaller size does force app designers to
separate apps into different tabs. The Settings app where you configure your
iOS device is a prime example. The iPAd layout has everything in a tree
format with branches expanding overtop of things when selected. Everything
else still remains on the screen. On the iPHONE, the instant you double-tap
on a setting area, everything else goes away and you can get right to what
you want. When finished, the "back" button gets you out of where you've
drilled down into.

In my case, I’d prefer to allocate my money on a better phone and not bother

perfectly happy with her SE and has no desire to upgrade her iPhone any time
soon since she’d prefer to have an iPad.
I do have a second iPhone for business purposes that I will sometimes use to
stream music or baseball while working out or if I’m on the treadmill or as

done.
The few times I’ve borrowed her iPad, I’ve been reminded why I don’t want

typing while you think would be easier since the keyboard is larger, it just
makes it that much harder to find the key you want to press. That and forget
about using it one handed or somewhere where you’re not stationary or

it the new SE if it actually comes out, the new iPhones that usually appear in
September or maybe pick up one of last year’s models if I’m not convinced by
what’s coming out this year and the price tag.

In my case, I’d prefer to allocate my money on a better phone and not bother
with a tablet that I’m probably not going to use. Whereas my wife is perfectly
happy with her SE and has no desire to upgrade her iPhone any time soon since
she’d prefer to have an iPad.

I do have a second iPhone for business purposes that I will sometimes use to
stream music or baseball while working out or if I’m on the treadmill or as an
extra timer or whatnot, but it’s an old beat up 5S and it gets the job done.

The few times I’ve borrowed her iPad, I’ve been reminded why I don’t want
one. It is so easy to get lost on the screen trying to find something and
typing while you think would be easier since the keyboard is larger, it just
makes it that much harder to find the key you want to press. That and forget
about using it one handed or somewhere where you’re not stationary or sitting
down.

Remember that having an iPhone, iPad and laptop for most people is overkill.
Sure, it is nice to have all this stuff, but I don’t see any need for an iPad
in my life, I use my iPhone all the time and the argument that I want phone
calls interrupting me or that I want to save my iPhone battery to me at least
don’t make sense. If I am listening to an audio book on an iPad and I get a
phone call I want to take it interrupts me anyways and in fact if I am
listening on the iPad I first have to pause the iPad whereas on my iPhone
whatever is playing pauses automatically when the phone rings and resumes again
when I’m done. As for battery I just get a new one put in should it gert to the
point where it doesn’t hold it’s charge any more, it’s a lot cheaper than
spending $500 or more on

I hope it comes to South Africa soon.

I have written to them but they can't tell me when it will be here.
Only that they are working on it.

2018-05-18 Thread Richard Turner

Go into the rotor settings under the VoiceOver settings and make sure that text
selection is selected.
Then when in an email, turn the rotor to text selection and flick down to
select all and then flick right with one finger.
Then turn the rotor to edit and flick up to copy and double tap.
Be sure you are at the beginning of what you want to copy before using text
selection.
I hope that helps.

Hi all,
Apologies for the very basic question. I wish to copy the contents of
a mail into my WhatsApp on my iPhone 6 but am unable to select the
entire message at once. Unlike in case of text messages or WhatsApp
there is no 'Select all' option in rotor and am unable to select the
entire message word by word by single finger double tap.
Eagerly await some solution in this end.

Re: Direct tv now update is not friendly with voice over.

2018-05-18 Thread Hope Paulos

The current direct tv now update makes the guide extremely difficult to
 navigate with voice over.
You may want to hold off on updating until the bugs are worked out.
This update does include a cloud DVR with twenty hours of storage free.

Re: iPhone verses iPad

2018-05-18 Thread Kimber Gardner
Mary,

My experience with mail on the iPad has been similar to yours. In fact
it was the change you mentioned in which a two finger flick up reads a
bunch of stuff before the message that ended my reading of mail on the
iPad. I still don't know why that change was made.

I would also be very interested in hearing how mail can be efficiently
managed on the larger screen.

2018-05-18 Thread Hope Paulos
I really appreciate all of the tips people are giving for navigation. They’re
all working! I do have a question though… When I flick down when the show is
playing to the information menu, then right to closed captioning and audio, how
do I turn on audio description? I flick right to English, and select it with
the remote nothing works. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: iPhone verses iPad

2018-05-18 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
Wonder if this is orientation related, I always do mail, indeed most things on
the iPad, in landscape mode. From scratch, I think
it will open in the default mailbox and in a message, but there's a button in
the top/left which always points back up a level.
When I'm at mailboxes, I open the Unread one, and then I have a list down the
left side column with all unread message threads. A
thread will open to a new side list with one message open, but sidebar of
message list is still down the left side. I tend to
touch middle of the message area, then do a 2-finger flip up to read from the
top, and then touch the left side again when I've
heard enough and choose a new message. I go back to top/left corner for the
button to back up a level and can flick up on that
thread and double-tap delete to lose the whole thread, and carry on down other
unread stuff. This is how I get through mail on the
old iPad mini and have done since I first had one.

I hear the mail will work like the phone if you stand it up in portrait mode.

RobH.

I find your statement that email on the iPad is easier than it is on the phone
fascinating. I despise email on the iPad. I had the
original iPad, and I have an iPad mini. And I never use it for mail unless my
phone is totally dead. Mostly, this is because
whenever I open the app, it never puts me in the message list. It always puts
me in a message. I spend a lot of time in the list,
only reading those things that I want to read. The iPad is good for somethings,
but I would really be curious why you think the mail
app is so wonderful on it. My experience has been so opposite. One other thing,
and I don’t think it’s been fixed on the iPad. When
you open a message to read it, on the phone, a two finger flick up gets you
only the message text, that is, the thing you want to
read. On the iPad, you get a lot of extra junk before you get the text. Unless
that has recently changed which is possible, because
I haven’t used mail on my iPad mini in a little while.
