Re: Sending a text to more than one person at a time

2019-10-13 Thread Steve Matzura
When sending text messages, if you don't have the recipient(s) in
Contacts, separate the telephone numbers or email addresses with a
semicolon. I got caught out by this just this past weekend. Every time I
typed a telephone number and pressed ENTER (on my Mac) to add that phone
number to the addressees list, I got shot over to the message input
field, my addressees list contained only one entry--the one I just
added, and I was unable to add any more numbers or names. I called a
friend who knows this stuff like the back of his hand, and he suggested
I try separating the telephone numbers with a semicolon, then adding the
names that are already in Contacts. This worked flawlessly. What I don't
know is how I would end a list of addressees with a telephone number and
not lose all the names I have already selected. I suppose I'll have to
experiment and discover.

Sieghard,
In Canada do they allow you to buy the Gold membership at once? I have in the
past paid $149 for 12 credits, which is usually 12 books, which comes out to
about $12.50 per book and you can use them anytime, rather than just once a
month.
Since our National Library Service is getting more and more of the commercial
audio books I did not renew with Audible.

Hello Everyone,

There is an audio book discount service called Chirp Books.com.

I receive a daily email containing recommended audio books that I have found to
be excellent. Now, generally speaking, I learn about books from this service,
then either download them from Apple Books, Audible, BARD or Over Drive.

There website is fully screen reader accessible and they do have an app for iOS
in which one can purchase the titles, at the discounted price.

Question, has anyone ever actually used the Chirp Books app, with VoiceOver to
download and listen to purchased titles?

There is definitely something wrong, it should never take this long to charge
an iPhone. Are you using the wall adapter that came with the phone or a
third-party adapter?
Lightning cables can of course also go bad.

Thanks Sieghard , I have followed our steps and plugged in the iPhone.
It had been plugged in since 10:00 last night after it had shut off due to low
battery, and by 4:30 this afternoon it had only charged to 79%.

I think there may be something wrong with my lightning cord as well, but it
seems to be charging now.

Re: dice world questions

2019-10-13 Thread Mama Peach
You can’t use gold by just playing the computer players. The gold is used when
you play an actual opponent. If when playing an opponent and you have bonus
rolls enabled for that game, it gives you an extra roll. So say you are playing
Yahtzee, you normally get 3 rolls before your turn is over. With Bonus Rolls,
it gives you 4 rolls which helps if you are trying to accomplish a particular
scoring spot on the board. I hope this makes sense.

Re: iPhone 8 with iOS 13.1.2 really short battery life

2019-10-13 Thread Donald Raikes
Thanks Sieghard , I have followed our steps and plugged in the iPhone.
It had been plugged in since 10:00 last night after it had shut off
due to low battery, and by 4:30 this afternoon it had only charged to
79%.

I think there may be something wrong with my lightning cord as well,
but it seems to be charging now.

Re: ITunes Backups

2019-10-13 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Vicki,

You shouldn't have trouble restoring a backup from an older operating system to
a newer one. The problem would be if your new device were running an older
operating system.

I would set up iCloud backups and restore from that. It's simpler, and either
way, the apps are downloaded from Apple's servers. Just go to Settings, choose
the Apple ID setting near the top that has your name, and make sure iCloud
Backup is on. Then a backup will happen automatically every 24 hours or so,
when your device is on and connected to wi-Fi and power. There's also a Back Up
Now button you can use to back up the device at any time.

Then when you get your new device, choose to restore from an iCloud backup. It
will give you the choice of using your most recent backup.

Best,
Anna

2019-10-13 Thread Beth G
Hello All,

I’ve been trying the trial version of this app. I can see books, and read the
first page, but I’m not sure how to navigate beyond this. Has anyone use this
app and had good luck with it? How do I read a book with it?

Thanks,

Beth

Re: A Question for All of You Audio Book Lovers

2019-10-13 Thread Richard Turner
Sieghard,
In Canada do they allow you to buy the Gold membership at once? I have in the
past paid $149 for 12 credits, which is usually 12 books, which comes out to
about $12.50 per book and you can use them anytime, rather than just once a
month.
Since our National Library Service is getting more and more of the commercial
audio books I did not renew with Audible.

are good books and which I can pick up for a few bucks and I can then use my
monthly credit for other books I want. The nice thing is that in the US the
Audible Gold membership is $14.95 US and before Audible Canada started this of
course translated into $21 or $22 depending on the exchange rate. Audible has
kept the Canadian membership price at the same $14.95 except it's now charged
in Canadian Dollars. From time to time they also have special sales where a
selection of a couple of hundred books are all offered for $5.95 or $6.95 or as
just now for the Canadian Thanks-Giving weekend, you can buy two books with 1
credit.

Mark

2019-10-13 Thread Kay Malmquist
I have a question. I have read that Only the iPhone 7 and above work with
this. Is that because it uses infrared and the 6 S does not have it?
Thanks much.

RE: A Question for All of You Audio Book Lovers

2019-10-13 Thread Mich Verrier
Hello Mark. I know the e mail that you are talking about chirp and also the
books that they offer. I should point out that this seems to be only for people
who live in the US and so if people live out side of the US like in Canada I am
ot shure if you are able to pay for the books or not. I have not used the app
but do get the news letter. I also feel that wile the books and stuff are good
discounts it would be nice if they were offerd in Canadion as well since wile
they might be a good discount in USD not so in CAD. From Mich.

Subject: A Question for All of You Audio Book Lovers

Hello Everyone,

There is an audio book discount service called Chirp Books.com.

I receive a daily email containing recommended audio books that I have found
to be excellent. Now, generally speaking, I learn about books from this
service, then either download them from Apple Books, Audible, BARD or Over
Drive.

There website is fully screen reader accessible and they do have an app for
iOS in which one can purchase the titles, at the discounted price.

Question, has anyone ever actually used the Chirp Books app, with VoiceOver
to download and listen to purchased titles?

Mark

A Question for All of You Audio Book Lovers

2019-10-13 Thread M. Taylor

Mark

I have been talking about text messaging- not email. I’m not sure I
communicated that very well- esp. as you mentioned email in your reply.

No, I find iCloud to be utterly frustrating.

ABC Groups is fairly easy to use and while you have to do your Email from
within the app, it works quite well.

Thanks for the suggestion. I found the Groups app in a search- but, of course,
accessibility was not mentioned. Have you also tried creating a group in
iCloud.com as the article suggestioned? Since the iCloud control panel is not
very friendly, I questioned whether iCloud.com was any better.

i prefer ABC Groups. For $1.99 you can remove ads.

I use this one all the time for our book club, and a few other groups.

Fully accessible.

Is anyone using this app and can say whether it is accessible? I have seen it
recommended as an easy way to create a group which can repeatedly be used to
send messages to an entire group of recipients.

Re: GPS

2019-10-13 Thread Dave Jones
As stated previously, Apple Maps and Google maps both have the ability to
list the steps taken within a route. I wouldn’t pay the extravagant fee for
Seeing AI GPS or others when there are free ones that will do an excellent
job. I use them all the time navigating on foot and in a car with no
problem whatsoever. Have a good day.

What I have heard second hand is that developers are having a lot of problem
going to 13. A lot of them are just doing what a lot of users are doing and
waiting for fixes to help them. Only what I heard, not saying it is true for
all developers. A lot of overhauls in 13 and so on. All in all, I have had

repeating what it said in the “What’s New” for the latest update from 2 days

Store description for Overcast:

What’s New - Oct 11, 2019
Version 2019.10
- Dark Mode support
- Fixes for iOS 13
iOS 13 is now required.

A bit further down in the app description it says:
Compatibility
Requires iOS 13.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

RE: If you like Overcast it seems you now need iOS 13

2019-10-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
There comes a point when every developer drops support for older software and
to me this makes sense.
I do find it surprising, however, why a developer would drop support for iOS 12
less than 4 weeks after iOS 13 came out and when certainly iOS 13 has not yet
been adopted as widely as it will be in another 3 or 4 months. I guess as long
as somebody with iOS 12 or earlier simply doesn’t get the app update and can
continue to use the app (I am talking about apps in general and not necessarily
just Overcast now) then that is OK, what would be not so good is if somebody
got the update on their iOS 12 device and the app would no longer work
afterwards. Dark Mode, for example, is an iOS 13 feature so it of course makes
sense that it wouldn’t work in iOS 12 or earlier, but it is not like when Apple
announced only 64 bit apps would be supported going forward and there came a
point when apps which had been abandoned by their developer just didn’t work
any more or disappeared from the app store.

Best regards,
Sieghard

I never said that developers won't support older versions of IOS, but when
we're talking about a few percentage points of the market, I just pointed out
why some developers would find it economically advantageous to drop support for
older versions of IOS.

some apps drop support apparently for even iOS 12 already and I wonder why this
is.
The same seems to be true for this ScripTalk app which was recently mentioned.

RE: To Upgrade or not to Upgrade, that is the Question

2019-10-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Exactly, I remember many years ago I think it was in the 6S and/or 6S Plus
Apple had two suppliers of some internal chip and phones which had the one
manufacturer's chip had I think slightly worse battery life than the other or
something like that. Anyways, I don't think this makes any significant
difference, but as for how this bug slipped by Apple is easy, it slipped by
Apple in the same way as all bugs slip by which is it didn't get fixed before
the public release of iOS 13. This was certainly reported by those who
privately or publicly tested iOS 13 and with every iOS release such bugs
existed sometimes they are worse than other times and why some users seem to
experience them more than others could be simply based on how their phone is
set up, maybe it has to do with the speech used. I actually switched back to
Samantha Enhanced after having used the female US SIRI voice for the last 6
weeks or so because it occurred to me I should maybe see if I have this issue
with Samantha. So far I haven't had it, but I also only made and received 3 or
4 or maybe 5 calls since I switched back to Samantha. But I think everybody who
posts about this should include what voice they use.

Sieghard

Well, it doesn't really matter whether all iPhones are created equal or not.
They all carry the Apple logo, and you'll never find anything anywhere from
Apple that says only some iPhone 11's are supported and others are not. This
may make it more difficult for Apple to track down the root cause, but the
burden is still on Apple to ensure their software works on all supported
devices.

I was wondering if the bugs in iOS 13.1.2, are more prevalent in any
particular model of phone, I.e. SE, iPhone 7, 8, etc..

RE: Using Apple Pay in XR?

2019-10-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The side button is the same button which has been on every iPhone at the top
right side and which in earlier phones is only used as the sleep/wake button
and to power the phone on and off. On the newer phones without home button it
is also used to toggle Voiceover on/off with a triple click if you have
configured this just as a triple click of the home button does, as Mary said a
double click brings up Apple Pay and pushing and holding it for a moment will
bring up SIRI.

Yes, Apple Pay can certainly be used without the home button. You use the side
button, which you click twice from a lock screen. Then you do face ID. Then you
hold the phone near the reader with the camera facing down. And that’s it. This
assumes that you have the Apple card in your wallet, and that it is either the
only card you have or the default card. Also, if you’re on a site or using an
app that uses Apple Pay, you use the side button in the same way. You double
tap Apple Pay. You double click the side button, and Face ID does it’s thing,
and you’re done. The side button replaces the home button in these instances.
Face ID replaces touch ID.

Hi Mary,

Maybe whatever version of Overcast one has on a device running iOS 12 will
continue to work, but maybe then you won’t get updates.
I am actually not just spreading an idea with no basis in fact, I was simply
repeating what it said in the “What’s New” for the latest update from 2 days
ago which I am quoting below and which you can read for yourself in the App
Store description for Overcast:

What’s New - Oct 11, 2019
Version 2019.10
- Dark Mode support
- Fixes for iOS 13
iOS 13 is now required.

A bit further down in the app description it says:
Compatibility
Requires iOS 13.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Best regards,

state of things. I've lost sound a number of times, and I can't imagine how
this bug slipped by Apple, and if Apple indeed does not control their products
i.e. two iPhone 11s are not the same, that is truly unfortunate!

Subject: RE: To Upgrade or not to Upgrade, that is the Question

Hello Carolyn, et al:

You know, I've been puzzling over this ever since I updated my 8 Plus to the
latest version of iOS and purchasing an iPhone 11; both having never lost
VoiceOver as the result of any activity. With the rare exception of some
VoiceOver display bleed-through errors, described in previous posts, I never
use any of my Apple devices without VoiceOver and yet, try as I may, I cannot
reproduce the loss-of-VoiceOver glitch with or without earphones, of any type,
attached.

Did you know that not all iPhones are created equal? There are several
different models referred to by the same device name. Also, in the United
States at least, the type of carrier used can, in fact, have an impact on
device performance. For example, several years ago there was a VoiceOver
display driver bug that only affected certain iPhones sold by certain
manufacturers. Moreover, if memory serves, iPhones older than the 7 series
would have 1 of 2 different modems installed, based on certain factors. My
point, regardless of the name used, not all iPhones are identical, in terms of
hardware.

Again, at present, this is just a guess as Apple never admits to hardly
anything until it has been resolved but I suspect that those having this
problem, or the reverse, those like me, who are not having this problem, can
attribute it to the device type that is being used.

For example, and again, this is just a guess so don't take issue, I make it a
practice to pay full price for SIM-free models of any Apple device, only. The
SIM-free model is one that is generally sold outside of the US but can, upon
request, be purchased inside the US, as well.

I was told, by an Apple employee, that all iPhone 11 series phones are now
SIM-free unless the purchaser elects not to pay full price for the phone, up
front. I do not know how true this is as I am certain that when one purchases
a device directly from a carrier, the device is most certainly not SIM-free.

While I am certain that Apple will resolve this loss-of-VoiceOver issue, the
fact that it even exists suggests to me that they did not or could not
anticipate this problem on their in-house models, said models most likely being
the purist of the pure where software and hardware installs are concerned.

In some cases doing a 3-finger swipe from right to left or bottom to top may
take you through these initial screens.

You just made me open up the ap on my iPhone XR. I'm a digital subscriber, but
if I read anything from the LA times, it's mainly via link I've come across
Twitter or from one of my RSS feeds and in Safari. I mainly use the app for
local alerts and such.
It had been a while since I used it so hadn't actually done so since their big
update from whenever they started rolling it out.
Anyway, true, the screen just shows those two items. I tried closing and
reopening etc. Turning VO off and randomly swiping and tapping, but no go.
I finally handed the phone to my sighted wife who said that it displayed a
series of those see what's new screens and to swipe next etc. She went through
the prompts and landed on the log in screen where I took the phone back and
proceeded with my log in with 1Password.
Now that I'm logged in, everything at first glance (no pun intended) seems
accessible enough. The tabs at the bottom, stories etc.
I guess it's just getting past that initial see what's new stuff (which is
nevertheless a fail on their part), and you should be good to go.

I wonder if anybody is able to successfully get past the opening screen of the
LA Times app on the iPhone. I just downloaded it and opened it, and there are
only two things spoken, one is welcome to the times or something like that, and
the other says something about an all new news experience. Nothing works. I
double tap on both of those things. I can’t get past that screen. It’s hard for
me to believe that the leading newspaper in one of the largest metro areas in
the country is completely voiceover useless. I know you can get it on Apple
news. But what if I want to get the app and have and possibly have things
organized in a better manner than what you get when you just look at a random
feed? Has anyone had any success with this app?

Yay, Apple.

Do the upgrade. Just have a pair of wired earbuds handy to get VO back if it
kicks out after a call. I hung up just a few minutes ago from a call (without
being plugged in), and lost speech but still had sound--I could hear the clicks
as I swiped right and left. I grabbed my wired earbuds, plugged in, and VO was
