Re: Where do you go to check if Raise to wake is on or off, please?

2020-01-03 Thread Richard Turner
Along with using extra battery, it is supposed to wake up your phone when you
pick it up. But, if it is in a bag/purse, that motion can cause it to
constantly wake up, thus using extra battery.
If one did not use a passcode or face ID, it would be the same as pressing the
home button, or the slide gesture on phones without a home button.

I want to make sure that is off. The guy at Wal-Mart did not think we got the
facial ID, so I'll eventually be sure about that and get someone to help if it
is not. I just want to rule out Raise to Wake, because it uses a lot of battery
if phone in pocket and a lot of motion.

Go to settings and swipe right until you hear display brightness, double tap
and you swipe until you hear raise to wake and it will say whether it is on or
off.

When you first open the app, you will need to give it permission to access the
camera and read through the agreement about its accuracy, etc.

Each time you open a new channel, there will be a description and a button to
watch the video demonstrating that channel made by the developer, who is blind
and works at Microsoft.

After you have read the descriptions and maybe even watched the videos, feel
free to come back with more specific questions as each channel is slightly
different in how \you use them.

To change channels, touch near the bottom where it says something like Channel,
ShortText, and flick up with one finger to change to Documents, etc.

Here's my question. How to I use Seeing AI? I got him to download it for me.

Incidentally, for $19.99, I got a wireless charger and am so glad I did.

RE: a podcast question'

2020-01-03 Thread Richard Turner
Try Overcast.
It is free and works great with VoiceOver and has some extra features like
being able to speed up the podcast, or reduce the silences.
I don't recall exactly where those settings are, but I'd recommend downloading
it and exploring its settings.

Subject: a podcast question'

I have a couple of podcasts I listen to regularly using the podcast APP on my
iPhone. I'm only into these chosen podcasts, and today I started listening to
one and about ten minutes in, it started over again and no matter what I tried,
I couldn't get it to move forward to the point where it had stopped before
restarting. I'm considering using a different APP. Might this be necessary, or
is there a solution that should work to allow me to move around in a podcast
using the recommended one from iTunes. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

RE: Seeing AI?

2020-01-03 Thread Richard Turner
When you first open the app, you will need to give it permission to access the
camera and read through the agreement about its accuracy, etc.

Each time you open a new channel, there will be a description and a button to
watch the video demonstrating that channel made by the developer, who is blind
and works at Microsoft.

After you have read the descriptions and maybe even watched the videos, feel
free to come back with more specific questions as each channel is slightly
different in how \you use them.

To change channels, touch near the bottom where it says something like Channel,
ShortText, and flick up with one finger to change to Documents, etc.

Tell me what I need to know to work it, please.

Today, I just got an iPhone 11. I think I am going to really like it. I can see
why they eliminated the Home Button - more screen room. The guy that set up my
phone said I was right. He doesn't think one will ever be back, even if a SE
comes out this spring.

Here's my question. How to I use Seeing AI? I got him to download it for me.

Incidentally, for $19.99, I got a wireless charger and am so glad I did.

Thanks, and I got an 11, as they did not have an XR, but I got it for $650, so
not a bad deal to pay out.

I like it. I like the face recognition. My husband figured it would take me

The iPhone 11 has better battery life and generally speaking a newer model
usually would have improved battery life over the same model from the year
before.
Of course once a phone gets to be 2 or 3 years old the battery capacity is not
what it was when the phone was new.

Which has better battery life an XR or an 11?

Seeing AI?

2020-01-03 Thread Carolyn
Tell me what I need to know to work it, please.

Today, I just got an iPhone 11. I think I am going to really
like it. I can see why they eliminated the Home Button -
more screen room. The guy that set up my phone said I was
right. He doesn't think one will ever be back, even if a SE
comes out this spring.

Here's my question. How to I use Seeing AI? I got him to
download it for me.

Incidentally, for $19.99, I got a wireless charger and am so
glad I did.

RE: netatmo problems

2020-01-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

That is unfortunately how the app works, it could be better but it's workable
as it is.
The trick is that once you flick up for example to change from page 1 to 2 and
say from your main indoor module to the second indoor module, just start
flicking right without touching anything else.
Then the information of that module is read and the same applies if you have
extra outdoor modules like a rain or wind gauge.

hi, I have purchased a new Netatmo WeatherStation. I believe I have set it up
correctly. But when I go into the app, I cannot access reliably anything other
than the main weather station indoor module. There are options to switch pages
among one of four and 1 of 5, and when I do that, it quickly reverts to the
original page.
Is this app still usable with voiceover?

Also, I have the Netatmo Comfort app for my phone. on that, I can access only
my two additional indoor modules, but neither the WeatherStation indoor module
nor the outdoor module. Does this app still work, too?
Any help appreciated. Best, Keith

Re: smart thermostats and their apps with voiceover?

2020-01-03 Thread Robin Frost
Hi Sieghard,
Once again we’re on the same wave length so it seems. My electrician just left
and he was kind enough to explore possibilities and it would seem that a Lyric
t6 might be headed my way soon.
Thanks everyone for educating me as always. I appreciate being able to benefit
from the wisdom and experiences of others who must navigate accessibility
issues regularly.
It is a rare person like my electrician who will enable VoiceOver on his device
to test the accessibility of an app just because he can and was genuinely
interested. I salute him for his care and proclaim it to the world.
Take good care.

And there are also the much less expensive Honeywell Lyric thermostats which
use an app which used to be called Lyric but got renamed to Honeywell Home,
it’s very accessible and these thermostats support all 3 major voice platforms,
Home Kit/SIRI, Alexa and Google Assistant.

They do also have more expensive thermostats which for us all have bells and
whistles we never use. We have the Lyric T5 which I think is now replaced with
a newer model, but I think I paid around $180 Canadian for it so it would have
probably been $129 or $149 US.

RE: question about Drones and accessibillidey and voice over.

2020-01-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
No, a blind person can not use a Drone. There maybe some things you could do
since many Drones have something like a Follow Me feature which when engaged
makes the Drone follow you around, it is sort of wirelessly tethered to your
iPhone, but the fact is that you have to see your Drone to fly it otherwise how
would you not fly it into a tree or crash it into the ground etc.
Of course there is that small issue of regulations which in Canada are quite
strict and they require a drone operator to always “have line of sight” to
their drone and it would be tough to argue that as a blind person you have
“line of sight”

RE: smart thermostats and their apps with voiceover?

2020-01-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I guess if you have a bunch of other Nest product then using the Nest
thermostat is certainly a good option since you wouldn’t have to download
another app just for the thermostat.
At my retail store I still use 2 of the Radio Thermostats, I bought those for
$139 about 6 or 7 years ago and even though I can’t use Alexa or Google
Assistant to control them, I won’t upgrade them to a Nest or Honeywell just
because they work just fine, the app is easily accessible if I want to turn the
temperature up or down a bit and otherwise they are on a schedule anyways since
my store is open 9 AM to 6 PM from Monday to Saturday so in this case it is
easy to set the schedule so it goes to 15 Celsius at 5:45 PM and then at 8:30
AM it goes to 20 Celsius and while it takes a good 45 minutes to an hour before
the store is heated up in the morning depending on how cold it is outside, that
is fine.

I recently had to change my apple ID password, but it was actually a
good thing as I had less trouble entering it in then my old password.
My purchasing apps actually works better now as when for example I
purchase voices for voice dream reader I only have to enter in my
password for the first purchase then for the next 15 minutes I don't
have to enter it again. For some reason getting my phone to only use
my touch ID to make app purchases doesn't seem to work and apple can't
figure out why this is. Overal, I enjoy purchasing apps and don't
really have any trouble.

RE: Question about battery life.

2020-01-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The iPhone 11 has better battery life and generally speaking a newer model
usually would have improved battery life over the same model from the year
before.
Of course once a phone gets to be 2 or 3 years old the battery capacity is not
what it was when the phone was new.

I use my phone a lot, end up having to charge a couple times a day. Here is my
question:

Which has better battery life an XR or an 11?

Dan, you can set it to use either uncontracted or contracted braille and it
will recognize all braille symbols.
There is a guide on AppleVis that even though it was written under iOS 8, is
still relevant. Here is the link to that

I wonder if this is accessible.

Documents 7 review: Free iOS file manager puts Apple’s Files app to shame

Macworld / J.R. Bookwalter

Documents 7 is a free iOS app for reading PDF, EPUB, Word, and Excel documents,
opening ZIP archives, viewing images, downloading and much more.

At a Glance
  a.. Documents 7
  Learn more
  on App Store
It took Apple nearly a decade to bring proper file management to the iPhone and
iPad with the arrival of the Files app in iOS 11. Over the same period of time,
an enterprising third-party developer based in Odessa, Ukraine was busy
refining its own file manager app, which outshines Apple’s in almost every
conceivable way.

Documents 7 is the latest incarnation of the versatile iOS utility that started
as clever web app ReaddleDocs, named for the up-and-coming startup who created
it. The mobile equivalent of macOS Finder, this jack-of-all-trades allows
iPhone and iPad owners to browse, view, and manage files with ease, all from an
intuitive user interface that puts Apple’s own Files to shame.

Documents 7 brings the Plus button to iPhone, making it easier for users to
create and import files from almost anywhere.

Although there was little to dislike about the look and feel of prior releases,
Documents 7 adds a fresh coat of paint inspired by the company’s recent PDF
Expert 7, a robust tool for document editing and annotation. The result is a
refined UI that makes viewing and organizing files a more organic experience,
with support for iOS 13’s new Dark Mode and floating keyboard. iPad users can
also now open more than one Documents window at a time, great for side-by-side
comparison or to drag and drop content between them.

Making its way from iPad to iPhone is the Plus button, a convenient one-tap
popup in the lower right corner which speeds up creation of new folders, text
and PDF files, scanning new documents, or importing existing files from iCloud
Drive, Photos, cloud storage providers, or network-attached sources. Naturally,
there’s also integration with the built-in Files app for seamlessly accessing
content stored there, as well as opening files saved in existing Locations
within Documents 7.

PDF master
>From the beginning, Documents 7 included a built-in web browser, which now
>offers private browsing mode. On the iPhone, browser settings are conveniently
>located from any open tab—no more hopping back to in-app settings just to
>clear data or change the location of file downloads. There’s even a new option
>to choose DuckDuckGo, Yandex, Ecosia, or Yahoo as the default search engine
>instead of Google. (Yay, privacy!)

Whether it’s cloud storage, network-attached devices, or remote servers,
Documents 7 makes file management a snap.

While Documents has always been a very capable PDF reader, version 7.0
introduces an option to turn the app into a full-fledged editor as well. After
upgrading to an annual subscription ($50 per year), Documents 7 unlocks a full
complement of professional tools, allowing users to edit, convert, and reduce
the size of PDF files.

If you already own PDF Expert 6, those editing features are available free of
charge in Documents 7. Unfortunately, three advanced tools recently added to
PDF Expert 7 do not get shared, so the only way to customize the Favorites
toolbar or convert and compress PDF files is to pay for another annual
subscription. That stinks, but Readdle offers a discounted upgrade to PDF
Expert owners ($10 for the first year). For the moment, this is the only in-app
purchase offered—everything else is absolutely free.

Documents 7 can effortlessly transfer files between iOS devices and personal
computers using any web browser.

Bottom line
For those underwhelmed by the built-in Files app, do yourself a favor and
install Documents 7, the free file manager worthy of being installed on every
iOS device.

At a Glance

Documents 7 is a free iOS app for reading PDF, EPUB, Word, and Excel
documents, opening ZIP archives, viewing images, downloading and listening to
music, watching videos, and much more.

  Pros
a.. More complete file manager than Files app
b.. One-tap Plus button now available on iPhone
c.. Files app integration
  Cons
a.. Can’t share advanced PDF Expert 7 subscription-only features
b.. Connections don’t sync between devices
c.. No support for reading CBR/CBZ format comic book files

Apple Accessibility

2020-01-03 Thread Marie

the problem with Voiceover and Siri. I got a quick and nice reply saying that
Apple is aware of and working on the problem. No time for a solution specified
