RE: how does flick type compared to apples slide to type?

2020-02-02 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Sieghard,

I'm a huge fan of FlickType but I use it in full screen mode and access it by
selecting it when typing a text or email. I use the native iOS on screen
keyboard for other few word text input such as searching, etc. It's great that
we have alternatives.

You're right that FlickType does take practice to get good with it and learn
its gestures for accessing numbers and symbols but I find that practice was
well worth the effort since I can type much faster with FlickType than with any
other on screen option I've tried. I haven't practiced with slide to type and
found it a bit offputting when I first upgraded to iOS 13.x so I turned it off.

What I like about slide to type is that it's just there, all I have to do is
hold for a second on a letter and I can start sliding, I don't have to change
keyboards.
I am either not proficient enough with Flicktype or Flicktype is just not quite
at a point where it can be left as the main keyboard in all situations. I know
Flicktype officianiados may disagree, but what I mean is that I don't think
somebody who can type fairly confidently with Flicktype for most regular words
is able to use it for more complex entry of numbers, symbols and so on without
an incredible amount of practice. I actually wonder if people like Chuck who
seem to be very proficient with Flicktype never switch to the iOS default
keyboard. For me to find Flicktype truly useful it would have to be similar to
slide to type, something I can use the normal way, but if I have a longer
stretch of text to type all it would take is a small gesture and I can start
tapping away like Flicktype intends me to do. For me dictation is still what I
always default to if it involves longer text and I'm not in a public place or
using a Bluetooth keyboard. Thanks to using a Logitech K780 at home and the
Logitech G613 at work quickly switching to my iPhone if I'm in a text message,
Facebook Messenger or email entry field is very easy and fast.
Having said all this, I occasionally use slide to type, i.e. I don't have it
disabled, because it actually does work quite well, but just as with Flicktype
it also requires a bit of practice.

The Apple ID has to be an email address because all the communications
through Apple with be done through it. If you create a new Apple ID in iOS
11 or later, you might be able to use your mobile phone number as your
username in some countries or regions. Example : If you live in China
mainland, use your (+86) mobile phone number.

Downloading purchased ringtones to a windows pc?

2020-02-02 Thread Robin Frost

Hi,
Is it still possible to download
ringtones you purchased from the iTunes store to your windows PC
for safe keeping? If so can someone walk me through how it's
done as it's been ages since I've even purchased a ringtone let
alone thought to archive it on my PC.
Thanks in advance.
Robin

Re: What's App

2020-02-02 Thread PRAMIT BHARGAVA
The recording feature of the WhatsApp has been there since quite a while.
As Ari mentioned, the best part about recording voice message through
WhatsApp is that you don't have to keep on holding the button just lock it
and keep on recording and once done simply double-tap to send this. This is
one of the reason I like WhatsApp.

Issue playing files in Dropbox

2020-02-02 Thread Duane Steele
Hello again, iPhone Listers,

For those having trouble playing files in Dropbox, the latest information I
have received from Dropbox support is that their ingeneers are aware of the
problem, and are working to resolve it. I responded to this information to
someone named Taylor and asked to be notified when the issue is resolved.
Meantime, files can be opened and played through the Files APP.

Peace & Blessings,

I was talking about the one that appeared in the status bar that would tell you
the battery level of your bluetooth headphones next to the phone battery.

Adding the wigit on the today screen still doesn't show my Logitech or

RE: how does flick type compared to apples slide to type?

2020-02-02 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
One frustration I had with Flicktype was with non-English words. Be it pronouns
or if I simply wanted to type in Spanish or maybe practice with my wife in
German. Building up a personal dictionary of entries was just too tedious.

I am trying to add an emergency contact to Emergency SOS and I found the one I

Thank you very much for that. I will have to try it. I liked
touch typing mode. Hearing so many letters is like hearing
numbers while you are trying to dial one, or remember one. I
begin to forget where I was and what I was saying.

I was talking about the one that appeared in the status bar that would tell you

Adding the wigit on the today screen still doesn't show my Logitech or

RE: Advancing to Next Duolingo Lesson

Dulce

At the top of the opening screen are 3or 4 tabs. One is called Crowns, one is
called Streaks and the other one is called Hearts. You have to select Hearts
then read down until you see the word Gems then the plus sign and the number 1.
I hit on that to open a lesson. It sometimes takes a few seconds so be patient.

By hit or miss, I sometimes can read stories and win points or
maybe even gems. There is a long list of things that I want to explore but you
can't get at them until you complete one level or another. I have no clue what
to do with the8 crowns I have and the 3 Streaks. I haven't seen anywhere where
any of that was explained but I haven't looked hard for any instruction on the
App.

RE: Must apple id be an email address

2020-02-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If that is so theoretically the actual Apple Id could be something else as long
as there is an email address associated, but that is not the case, it has to be
an actual valid email address.
I couldn't just make my Apple Id "Sieghard 4857" and have my email address,
siegh...@live.ca, associated to this, the Apple Id actually has to be
siegh...@live.ca or whatever other email address I choose to use.

RE: how does flick type compared to apples slide to type?

2020-02-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
With slide to type, if you haven't disabled it, you find the first letter of a
word and hold your finger there for a moment. You then hear a little triple
tone which indicates slide to type is active, then you very quickly slide your
finger (without ever lifting it up) to each letter of the word you want to
type. Just as with Flicktype it is not important if you are exactly on the
letter, just slide to the approximate place of the letter ad on to the next. At
some point iOS will guess what word you want and speak it, at this point you
can lift your finger and the word will be inserted. You should go to
www.Applevis.com and do a search for "Slide to Type" and find the tutorial
Thomas made.
If you have a word like "tomorrow" where you have a double letter, you simply
slide to the "r" and then on to the "o", iOS will guess that a double letter is
required.
You don't even have to insert a space, if you type a word using Slide to Type,
after you lift your finger you can put it back down, find the first letter of
the next word, hold and start sliding again, the space is automatically
inserted.

How does slide to type differ from touch typing mode, where you slide your
finger around until you land on the letter you desire and then double tap? Or
did they just change the name of touch typing mode? Just a bit confused. Thank
you.

RE: Battery indicators?

2020-02-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I think maybe Richard means the indicator which used to be in the Status Bar at
the top. In iOS 12 if you had a Bluetooth headset turned on and it supported
showing battery status it would show up to the left of the iPhone's battery
indicator in the status bar.
This is no longer available, to me this also makes sense because I can see only
the status of one device there and to me swiping right from the home screen to
get to the Today Screen and checking battery status there is no more
complicated than to touch the Status Bar and then find the battery indicator
there.

Not sure what you mean, Richard, I have put the battery indicator at the very

battery status of any devices it supports. Maybe it’s simply disabled, if it’s
not there tap to Edit your Today screen at the very bottom and take a look.

RE: ParcelTrack - did anybody else leave negative feedback

2020-02-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It is obvious that the ParcelTrack people seem to respond better to a negative
review on the App Store than to feedback submitted by email.
I tested this by forwarding Apple’s email with their developer response to my
review via their feedback email. I pointed out that I appreciated the reply and
that I would be happy to leave another much more positive review if they manage
to restore very good Voiceover accessibility as well as fixing the issue with
Purolator here in Canada where I can add packages, but never get any updates. I
was just interested to see if they reply to that email since it relates to the
review I left.

Hi,
in addition to email/ in app feedback, I leave app reviews too as this affects
App Store ranking. Some developers take this more serious. When developers
respond to emails, I also request a case number this makes it easier for me to
follow up. Some developers do not provide case numbers though.

Hi,

Just thought I share the message I received yesterday from Apple. Last week I
rated ParcelTrack 2 Stars and left a fairly negative review about the new
version being not nearly as accessible as before and the fact that here in
Canada you can’t use Parcel Track any more to track packages from Purolator
(one of our larger couriers) and that CanPar, another Canadian courier, isn’t
even in the list of available companies.
I should mention that I had send the developers an email via the feedback email
which is given in the app and that was right after they came out with this new
version and probably a week before my review. I had also sent them several
emails in the past about adding CanPar, last fall I sent one about Purolator
not working any more and also I sent them one with a few suggestions for new
features. I never received a response from them to these emails except one time
at the very beginning when I first started using the app a few years ago.
Obviously a negative rating is being taken more seriously and from now on I
guess that will be how I leave feedback or at least if I send feedback in an
email I will mention that I may do so.
OK, here is the reply I received:

Dear Sieghard,
Uberblic Labs responded to your review of: ParcelTrack - Package Tracker
Uberblic Labs "Thank you very much for your feedback that we take very serious.
We are working to make the new version of ParcelTrack accessible to blind users
again. Also we will add the couriers to our list!
Hopefully you will soon enjoy ParcelTrack again with all its features! "

I will and I had left a 2 Star review

RE: how does flick type compared to apples slide to type?

2020-02-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

RE: how is accessibility of the Tile, and Pebble finder apps?

2020-02-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I have never used any of these, but here is something to consider before you
invest a bunch of money, this is taken from an article on 9to5Mac, I put the
link below this excerpt:

A new report from Ming-Chi Kuo on
Wednesday
detailed what to expect from Apple during the first half of 2020.
Kuo reiterates that we should expect the iPhone SE 2, new iPad Pros, and
MacBooks with scissor switch keys.
Most notably, however, Kuo says to expect a smaller wireless charging mat from
Apple, ultra wideband item trackers, and high-end Bluetooth headphones.

This week’s top stories: iOS 14 rumors, Apple’s record Q1 earnings, wireless
charging mat, more -

Also, what phone and is this with the latest version, iOS 13.3.1?
I just opened Music on my iPhone 8, went to My Library and selected Artists and
I had no problems flicking through the index on the right side. I also have
Apple Music, I don’t have anything downloaded to my phone and have hundreds of

You are right about the headings, that does not work.
When I flick down, I hear Cap A, selected.
Cap B, selected.
But it goes through the entire alphabet.
I am disappointed and mystified, from your description, I cannot tell why it is
stopping after just 3 letters.
I will try this on other devices, and see if I can replicate the same annoying
behavior that you are describing.

Jim,

Thanks for your prompt reply. That is the right side that I spoke about. I can
only flick through about two or three letters before I get that sound saying
that I cannot go down anymore. I also tried the headings rotor gesture which
did not work either.

Regarding navigating the Apple Music Library:
At one time, you could navigate by heading through each letter of the alphabet,
and it worked quite well.
There is apparently another way that, for me, works just as well.
If you touch the very right edge of the screen, you should hear Voiceover say,
Section Index, Adjustable.
You may then flick up and down through the letters of the alphabet, and
hopefully, your rotor will automatically adjust to a setting called Adjust
Value.
This took a bit of getting used to, but I can navigate by Artist, Album, or
Song using this method through the entire alphabet.
Hope this helps.

Hello good people,

I signed up for a free month trial of Apple Music yesterday. I moved all of my
playlists and favorite artists with an internet service. In the library tab in
the bottom left corner. When I go to the right side of the page that has the
letters from A to Z going down the page. I cannot use the flick gesture to go
past the C. I can use the three finger swipe down to go from page to page but
that of course does not tell me where I am on the page. I called Apple
Voiceover desk and they escalated the issue. I wanted to know if anyone else is
having this issue. I have had Spotify for years and wanted to give Apple Music
and try Since I haven’t used it since the launch.

Re: How do I pause a RecUp formerly DropVox recording?

2020-02-02 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi,

A context menu is the same as long pressing or double-tapping and holding an
item. It can also be done with a triple-tap. I believe the quadruple-tap is
specific to recUp. It's not how you open a standard context menu in iOS.

Best,
Anna

RE: Downloading A YouTube Video in iPhone5S?

2020-02-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I’m pretty sure they do, just Google something like “Download and compress
YouTube videos” and you find first of all YouTube videos on how to do this and
if you continue to the web results you find links for online converters who do
this. Unless somebody here has done it, used a particular website and can give
you step by step instructions you just have to try it, but most online
conversion sites seem pretty accessible. I assume you simply copy the URL from
the video you want to download and compress, plug it into an edit field on the
website, choose the format and whatever quality you want and activate a button
to start the process. Maybe you specify also where you want it saved, maybe you
first do the work and then you will get a download button or link which will
allow you to save the converted and compressed video.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hi Fazil,

First of all WhatsApp has a limit on the size of video that can be shared
through it which is 16 MB, which is approximately 90 seconds to 3 minutes. So
to share a YouTube video, I suggest you tp share the video URL.
That will also occupy less space plus you don't have to worry about the size of
the video.

Hope this helps!

My question is that if I want to share this 34-minute-video on WhatsApp, can I

Deidre, did you know you can do a single-finger double-tap and hold, then slide
up a little bit to lock your recordings on WhatsApp so you don't have to keep
holding your finger down on the record button? Focus should automatically stay
on the button, which has now changed into a send button, so all you have to do
when you're done recording your message is double-tap, and it's on its way.

Re: What's App

2020-02-02 Thread englishrider91
Or you could just do a quick two-finger single-tap when a message comes in to
shut VoiceOver up. Personally, I'd rather have the setting for describing
images on than turn it off for such a small problem, but to each their own. I
also don't really mind my phone vibrating when a new message comes in, so I'd
leave the in-app notifications setting on, too. I like to know when I've gotten
a new message.

Thanks,
Ari

Re: Curious Issue When In An Edit Field

This happens to me too, sometimes. When it does, I just touch the return key to
put focus on the keyboard, then turn the rotor again to find edit. This works
every time.

Re: How do I pause a RecUp formerly DropVox recording?

2020-02-02 Thread englishrider91
What is this new context menu thing in iOS 13? Does it have something to do
with the actions item on the rotor? It's good to know people have figured out
that's it's now a single-finger quadrupal tap; I wish it was still a
tripple-tap. Maybe this context menu thing will be more useful than I'm
thinking it will.

Re: Braille screen input in iOS 13.3.1?

2020-02-02 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi,

Yes, that keystroke unlocks orientation for Brialle Screen Input, so it should
fix the problem. Afterward, you may need to recalibrate the dots by entering
dots 456 together, then dots 123.

Best,
Ana

2020-02-02 Thread Arnold Schmidt
This is worth a try. I have not experienced the problem, still being on 12.4.4.
In the past, when the dots have become all messed up, I have done a
three-finger swipe down, and it has said unlocked, and the problem is solved.
Hold the phone in landscape, and do the three-finger swipe down, going from
where dot 1 would be, toward dot three. I am curious to know if this fixes it.

Re: Braille screen input in iOS 13.3.1?

2020-02-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Yes, I'm having this problem as well. It's intermittent for me, so if I
twist and turn the phone enough, eventually I get it into away mode.
I've also used it as an opportunity to learn the table top mode, which
is a lot more doable on my iPhone 11 then it was on the 4S.

On 2/2/20 2:59 AM, 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone wrote:

On my iPhone XS I’m trying to use Braille screen input but it seems stuck in
tabletop mode and only displays properly if charging port is to the left. There
seems no way to recalibrate the layout and no amount of turning the iPhone
makes any difference. Is this a bug I should report or am I missing something?
Thanks
Harry

If you go to the bottom of your newly received message and type your reply in
to the message field then below the message field should be the send button

There is no reply button as such,
It's a receive the message,

Type your reply and hit send.

I was wrong about where the 'send' button is. It is just below the message you
have just entered.

Also, if you have opened an attachment, like a video, you need to go back to
the main message to write and send your text.

Re: ParcelTrack - did anybody else leave negative feedback

2020-02-02 Thread Feliciano Godoy
Hi,
in addition to email/ in app feedback, I leave app reviews too as this affects

Very good point.

I forgot about Skype.

Yes, a great alternative for toll free numbers.

It is worth setting up a Skype account for just that purpose, especially if you
live where phone calls are very expensive.

It works great over WiFi.

Hello,
We also have the sensors that last 14 days in the United States. It is what I
use. The app for the libra works fine to test your sugar. There are parts of
the app that could be better. The part of the app where you can share your

Yeah in the US the libre last 10 days,

Here in Nz and in the UK and I believe everywhere else

The free style libre last 14 days.

Yes the NFC chip is what the sensors and the phone use to communicate however
there is a device available for each of the
products that allows them to talk using blutetooth to your phone.

The Dexcom is I believe their own product

The freestyle uses a third party product called the miaomiao

I believe this is Chinese but that?s only a guess.

With this product currently or still I believe you have to either jailbreak
your phone or set the software up as an apple
ddeveloper.

this may have changed in the passed couple of months but it was like this when
I started using the freestyle 6 months ago.

The bt dongles for the devices do cost but they let your phone talk to your
sensors without having to worry about the
manual  swiping

According to one of my clients, the Dexcom is accessible.

Both types need at least an iPhone 7 because they use the NFC chip that was
introduced starting with the 7.

Their apps make it so a blind person doesn?t need their expensive stand-alone
device to scan the patch.

I think the Freestyle ones last longer but if the app doesn?t have an alarm, I
can see why the doctor is leaning toward the
Dexcom.

Though, you may want to double check the specifications for each one to make
sure that feature hasn?t been added.

other is the Dexcom.  I know that the Libre app is accessible but I don't know
anything about the Dexcom.  My doctor wants
me to get the Dexcom because it has alarms and the Libre does not.  The
downside of it is that you have to enter in codes
every so often.  To me, if it is accessible that doesn't really matter because
there is always Aira or some way to work that
out.  I also noticed that the Libre link app does not work on the 6 S.  Anyone
know why?  Or do you have a customer service
number?  Does anyone have any answers or where I can go to find out more?
Thanks in advance.

RE: Freestyle Libre or Dexcom?

2020-02-02 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Yeah kay,

The phone needs to have the NFC chip which I think Richard said came out in the
7.

I have an 11 so don’t need to worry but have used the freestyle for six plus
months now and I love it
I know someone that uses the Dexcom and they do say it has better features re
useability

Richard,
Interestingly enough, the Dexcom app downloaded to my 6 S and I could open it.
Of course, I couldn't do anything with it because I did not have a sensor but
what I read in the beginning set up was totally accessible. The Libre app
would not even download and said that the phone was not able to be used with
this app.

According to one of my clients, the Dexcom is accessible.
Both types need at least an iPhone 7 because they use the NFC chip that was
introduced starting with the 7.
Their apps make it so a blind person doesn’t need their expensive stand-alone
device to scan the patch.
I think the Freestyle ones last longer but if the app doesn’t have an alarm, I
can see why the doctor is leaning toward the Dexcom.
Though, you may want to double check the specifications for each one to make
sure that feature hasn’t been added.

Richard,

So I could use my skype account from here in NZ to contact apple in the UsA or

Very good point.
I forgot about Skype.
Yes, a great alternative for toll free numbers.
It is worth setting up a Skype account for just that purpose, especially if you
live where phone calls are very expensive.
It works great over WiFi.
And, it works great on the iPhone.

RE: Freestyle Libre or Dexcom?

2020-02-02 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Yeah in the US the libre last 10 days,

Here in Nz and in the UK and I believe everywhere else
The free style libre last 14 days.

Yes the NFC chip is what the sensors and the phone use to communicate however
there is a device available for each of the products that allows them to talk
using blutetooth to your phone.

The Dexcom is I believe their own product
The freestyle uses a third party product called the miaomiao
I believe this is Chinese but that’s only a guess.

With this product currently or still I believe you have to either jailbreak
your phone or set the software up as an apple ddeveloper.

this may have changed in the passed couple of months but it was like this when
I started using the freestyle 6 months ago.

The bt dongles for the devices do cost but they let your phone talk to your
sensors without having to worry about the manual swiping

Braille screen input in iOS 13.3.1?

2020-02-02 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
On my iPhone XS I’m trying to use Braille screen input but it seems stuck in
tabletop mode and only displays properly if charging port is to the left. There
seems no way to recalibrate the layout and no amount of turning the iPhone
makes any difference. Is this a bug I should report or am I missing something?
Thanks
Harry
