Re: Siri is speechless

2020-03-17 Thread PRAMIT BHARGAVA
Hello Donald,

First of all check for any update available for your iOS version.
Then try to check if you are getting proper network coverage and you are
connected to Wi-Fi.
Also your can forget and reconnect to your Wi-Fi network or simply reset
your network settings.
Then simply Turn Off and On siri from Settings.
And finally restart your phone.

Hope this helps

Pramit

Below the number 7, you will find a shift button, once that is activated, the
comma is where the number 4 would normally be, you'll have to do shift, before
each time you do that, until you get your three commas in place.

Hi Sieghard

I was so happy to get a face recognition iPhone for exactly those reasons.
Though my Vermont weather isn’t as bad, the wood working and hard use of my
hands in projects caused my finger print reader to rarely work. I was often
redoing it so it would work for a little while.

I have found that I can be subtle when opening my iPhone. As all it has to
do is sort of see my face and it clicks on. I have it on the setting that
doesn’t require eye contact.

Now if only my talking tape measure and audible level could be controlled by
my voice that would be great!

Is there a email list for blind wood workers out there!
Or, maybe those working on vintage cars?

One more related thing. I did struggle a little to learn the gestures that
replace the home key. I was trying to do them from a podcast description.
It took me some practice and I did have some frustration. But, now I prefer
the gestures and miss them when using older iPhones.

Corona Virus Alerts: How to get news updates on your phone right now, cNet

2020-03-17 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I am posting the following article only because Apple products are
discussed.

Be Well,

Mark

Corona virus alerts: How to get news updates on your phone right now

Don't miss another important update about how COVID-19 is affecting your
country and where you live.
March 17, 2020

Sites like Twitter can help keep you updated on the latest corona virus
news.
It's all over the news, social media and nearly everywhere you look -- the
novel corona virus , now a pandemic, has been changing the way employees
work and emptying store shelves. And if you don't have time to follow the
news, you're in luck because you can have news alerts sent to your phone.
You can use sources such as Twitter, Google Alerts and your favorite news
sites to receive updates and notifications about where the corona virus is
and what you can do to help keep yourself and your community safe. You can
also sign up for text alerts to receive information about how many cases are
in your area and what's closing down, like schools and churches.
Read on to learn how to set up for alerts about corona virus developments.

Twitter can send you notifications from corona virus sources
Twitter is a good source for learning what's going on with the corona virus
-- and it has an option to let you turn on crisis and emergency alerts. To
enable this, go to your notifications settings and select Notifications >
SMS Notifications > Crisis and emergency alerts.
You can also get notifications about corona virus from Twitter accounts,
but you'll want to make sure you trust the news source -- for example, The
Associated Press, Reuters, BNO Newsroom, CNN and other domestic news
organizations. To do so, follow the account, then tap the bell icon (located
beside the Following button) and select All Tweets. Now you'll be notified
when the account tweets something new.

Google Alerts
When something new about the corona virus shows up in Google Search, you
can be among the first to know about it. To get started, go to Google Alerts
and enter the topic you want to follow into the search box at the top.
Change the settings to your preferences, like how often you want to see
notifications, and then click Create Alert. You can always go back and
adjust your settings later.

Apple Alerts
If you've got an iPhone or Apple Watch, you can receive emergency, public
safety and government alerts on your device. Some information you may
receive could be alerts issued by your country or region's government, or
alerts involving imminent threats to safety or life.
To turn on the notifications, go to Settings > Notifications, then scroll
all the way to the bottom and toggle on Emergency Alerts and Public Safety
Alerts.

News apps
Most, if not all, news apps will have a newsletter you can sign up for
(in-app and online) that sends the most pressing information to your inbox.
For example, the CNET Now newsletter sends one email daily that includes the
most important news of the day -- much of which is corona virus -related
right now. The CNET app (iPhone, Android) and CNET on Apple News also send
regular news alerts, including stories about the corona virus .
Most news apps will also send you notifications (with your permission) about
breaking news alerts. After you download the apps, they will ask for your
permission to send notifications and you can choose to receive alerts about
breaking news only. You can update at any time in the app's settings.

Get alerts for the city you live in
Depending on where you live, you may be able to sign up for text alerts from
the city. For example, San Francisco lets its residents sign up for alerts
by texting COVID19SF to 888-777. If your city doesn't have a program like
this set up yet, you may be able to sign up for statewide alerts. You can
usually find these by going to [state].gov -- for example, Kentucky.gov.

Aira free to college students for the remainder of the semester.

2020-03-17 Thread Eric Caron

Hi listers,

It is good to be back on list after being away for a few years. I was
recently approved and have been enjoying the helpful information.

I’m sure Aira has been discussed in the past. I wanted to post the below as it
would be very helpful to current blind college students.

I just wish they would also offer it to blind teachers as they are also
learning fast how to run on line teaching.

Also, if you are planning to join Aira for more than the free 5 minute calls be
sure to go through a current user so that you both get additional minutes.

Here is the part of the post for college students.

Aira is the popular app that connects a trained sighted person to assist a
blind person with tasks.

I am posting part of a email message below that offers free service to
blind college students for the rest of the semester.

If you know a student please share as this could be a big help when learning
new on line distance learning software. Now if only they offered it to blind
teachers as well!

One other note. If you are thinking about joining Aira go through a current
blind user and both of you will get free minutes to use.

Eric Caron

Free Offer - College Students in Need of Aira

We know that many universities and colleges are rapidly shifting to distance
learning. We’ve heard that some materials and software being used are
inaccessible so we will be offering free Aira for any college student for the
remainder of the spring semester ending in May 2020. If you know of a student
who could benefit from Aira for their distance learning, please email
supp...@aira.io for more information

  Hello,

I have a very strange issue on my iPhone 6 running ios 12.4.1. Voice over is
working fine, but I can do absolutely nothing with Siri. Frankly, I am not
convinced that the problem is with the iPhone, but I can do nothing if I
attempt to dictate.. This is true whether I attempt to get the temperature,
dictate a message, etc. I also pressed the home button and said “turn on Siri”
with no response. Only once did I get a response to a command. The response I
heard was “I’m having trouble.”

So ideas please regarding how to trouble shoot. Just in case, what is the
phone number for Apple tech support?

  Thanks.

Re: Siri is speechless

2020-03-17 Thread Barbara Stahl
Try going to settings and seri and there turning seri off and then back on
again.
Also, make sure you have cell or wifi service because seri will not work if you
don't have one of these connections.
Third, have you tried turning off the phone waiting 5 or ten minutes and then
turning the phone back on again? Sometimes that can fix weird issues that may
pop Up on the phone.

RE: iphone 8 or XR?

2020-03-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, Touch Id may let you unlock the phone while it's in your pocket or in a
belt holster, but it's different strokes for different folks. I live in
northern Canada and I'd love to have Facetime since then I wouldn't have to
take off my gloves every time I'm outside and want to unlock my phone and for
us up here that is probably about 5 months out of the year. Then there are the
times when I spend more time in my woodworking shop and when Touch Id simply
won't work because either my fingers have too many cut and cracks in them or
they are full of glue which even when properly removed usually messes up Touch
Id for a few days.

I recently went from iPhone 7 to XR.
Getting used to the large screen and no home button took about 2 minutes.
I really loved Touch ID and I was a bit skeptic.
However, Face ID is simply brilliant.

Hello,

I have a very strange issue on my iPhone 6 running ios 12.4.1. Voice over
is working fine, but I can do absolutely nothing with Siri. Frankly, I am
not convinced that the problem is with the iPhone, but I can do nothing if
I attempt to dictate.. This is true whether I attempt to get the
temperature, dictate a message, etc. I also pressed the home button and
said “turn on Siri” with no response. Only once did I get a response to a
command. The response I heard was “I’m having trouble.”

So ideas please regarding how to trouble shoot. Just in case, what is the
phone number for Apple tech support?

Thanks.

Re: Help with Downcast?

2020-03-17 Thread Flor Lynch
What was the error message? I believe Overcast is a good alternative and is
free, for the most part. You could import your podcasts from Downcast into
it. There are a few other good podcatching apps as well.

Subject: Help with Downcast?
Hi everyone,

On my iPhone, I’ve been using Downcast for my podcasts for a long time. A
few days ago, I finished listening to a podcast, and I tried refreshing
Downcast to download any new ones. The next time I went back and ran
Downcast, there was an error message and a question asking if I wanted to
send an anonymous report about the error message. Since then, I’ve not been
able to listen to any podcasts, because Downcast always crashes.

I was thinking of erasing the app from my phone and redownloading it, but
then I’d lose all of the podcasts I’ve not heard yet.

Does anyone know what could be wrong and if there’s an alternative answer to
my situation?

Jim

Re: iphone 8 or XR?

2020-03-17 Thread Øyvind Lode
I recently went from iPhone 7 to XR.
Getting used to the large screen and no home button took about 2 minutes.
I really loved Touch ID and I was a bit skeptic.
However, Face ID is simply brilliant.

Hi, you have to enable it with your phone in landscape and the program on. TAP
to get the controls to be seen and then double tap on I think something like
captioning. Once enabled it will be for good in all devices. Hope it helps.

Try a three finger double tap. Maybe you turn speech off by mistake when you

2020-03-17 Thread Carolyn
When I first had an iPhone and asked Siri something, and she said, "here's what
I found on the net." At that time, I didn't know to just touch the screen and
go for it, so I said, "well, screw you," and she replied, "I wouldn't talk to
you like that," to which stupidly, I replied, "I'm sorry." My daughter-in-law
and I have really laughed about that one.

I cuss at Seeri frequently and she usually responds in a huffy voice with
something like: and all I was trying to do was help you.

Just now to test what she might say I asked a question I knew she could not
answer. When she bungled the question, I said rather unfairly in this instance:
you are so f stupid. She replied in an uncharacteristically neutral
voice: I won't reply to that. Good for her.

I have never been timed out.

Siri doesn’t sulk in that way, LOL. You heard an urban myth. Something else up

I heard that if you cuss at Siri whether you mean to or not, she will stop

Re: Help with Downcast?

2020-03-17 Thread Matthew Bullis
Although I haven't tried this method, you could still delete and reinstall the
app after you backed up the info to icloud. You do need to go through and turn
on various settings, then check to make sure the backup has been completed. As
I said, I've not deleted and reinstalled, but I hope that if this situation
comes up, it will keep a record of not only the 250 podcast feeds I've
subscribed to, but the actual episodes I've chosen.

Hi everyone,

On my iPhone, I’ve been using Downcast for my podcasts for a long time. A few
days ago, I finished listening to a podcast, and I tried refreshing Downcast to
download any new ones. The next time I went back and ran Downcast, there was
an error message and a question asking if I wanted to send an anonymous report
about the error message. Since then, I’ve not been able to listen to any
podcasts, because Downcast always crashes.
I was thinking of erasing the app from my phone and redownloading it, but then
I’d lose all of the podcasts I’ve not heard yet.
Does anyone know what could be wrong and if there’s an alternative answer to my
situation?

If that were to be true: at my house, I wouldn't know about Siri's tender
feelings because I have never had cause to use unladylike language to him, but
it is the complete reverse if you were to ask about Alexa, the voice of Amazon.
You might learn a naughty word or two if you were to hear me when she gets me
all wound up which she does, at a conservative estimation, about 100 times a
day!!!

Trying rebooting both devices and try again until you can.
Is the Apex updated to its last firmware?
As I recall, they were always difficult to get paired, but the older firmware
gave you an extremely short time.
Mind you, it has been several years since I did this with one I had for
teaching, I just hope Apple still supports the Apex.

Hi Brian,

I have used Dolby On for trimming the sound file. The app is free and
accessible.
Have numerous features that you can play around with and you'll love it.

Hope this helps
