How can I get the mail messages list in the iPad to show by default when I open the app?

2022-11-30 Thread Mary Otten
That’s kind of a convoluted subject line, but it does ask the question. In the
past, when I had iPads, including a mini, when I opened the mail app, on the
left side of the screen there would be a message list. The right side within
show the preview for whatever message was selected on the left side. and double
tapping on a message would open the message so you could see the whole thing.
However, with my iPad mini six, when I open the Mail app, the message list is
not shown by default. Instead, there is a button that I have to double tap to
show the side bar where the message list is located. I’ve been into the
settings for the Mail app and do not find a way to change this behavior. This
seems really annoying, and I would like my sidebar back by default when I open
the app.

RE: stopping dictation

2022-11-30 Thread R Van Lant
This hits on my frustration since upgrading to 16.x. I find that Siri no
longer recognizes commands I've been using for years - -or it takes a couple
tries to get it right. It's really frustrating. I already reported to them
that I have trouble hearing the tone that indicates Siri is listening. When I'm
in a car or anywhere with some background noise, I cannot tell if she's started
listening. Apple accessibility said they forwarded my concern on, since there
is currently no way to change those tones.

Siri is not good at recognizing :natural" speech; it often has a particular
syntax it wants. I think Siri recognizes "dial" such and such a person. Even
so, I've had to change names in my contacts before because even if I only have
one Michael, Siri sometimes comes up with a short list of other names
completely unrelated. I find that most annoying too.

Yes. When I ask Siri to call someone she asks”What do you want to know about
’someone’?” I resist the urge to say, “I want to know why you don’t understand
me, you …” I just say “CALL someone and she does. Annoying but an easy work

I rarely use Siri to sent a text. I'm just talking about the dictation function
on the keyboard in any text entry spot.

I just was looking at the Siri settings, under Settings, Accessibility, Siri,
and there is a setting called: Show Apps Behind Siri, which for me is off. I
don't recall setting it. I wonder if that is why there is no message shown
because this is not on?

I don't use Siri this way to the extent others do so have not felt it to be a
problem.

But, maybe check that setting and change it to see what impact that has.

Not sure what you mean that you can still add to messages outside the message
app, if I dictate a message using Siri and it reads back the message and I want
to add something, I can say "append" and then dictate what I want to add.
But if you mean that it seems to be no longer possible to manually edit a
message after dictating it to Siri then I agree that this is a big pain in the
neck.
By this I mean not dictating a message when you are in the Messages app and you
do a 2-finger double tap or tap the dictate button, but asking Siri "Message
John Smith.
In iOS 15 if I said "Message John Smith, Hi John, I am going to be a bit late
for our meeting, but it shouldn't be more than 10 minutes" I could touch the
screen near the top after Siri read back the message and I could then double
tap once I found the message on the screen and I could review and if necessary
correct any mistakes. That seems to be no longer possible, I have been meaning
to ask a sighted person if they can do this, but when you use Voiceover at
least after Siri reads back the message and asks if you want to send it you can
check the screen anywhere and there is no message.

Yeah Siri gets quite a blot of that stuff screwed up since 16. I haven't done
any updates since 16 because though there might have been some minor bug fixes
with voice over and dictation, I do not want to be further disappointed. I
often send messages on my back up old phone that has no phone service because I
can still add to Siri dictated messages outside the message app and it will add
to them without losing the first part of the already dictated message, which is
what Siri now does. Losing those functions kind of defeat using Siri in such a
context, that is, more spontaneously without having to go into the message app.
Maybe it has to do with the function capacity of the SE 2nd generation phone.

Hello Sieghard,

Thanks, but that I already knew all.
And I just learned it’s the same with Homepod: only one standard alarm tone,

Very strange indeed.

RE: Apple TV without a physical screen - Results

2022-11-30 Thread Feliciano Godoy
Gary,

In the past I used an HDMI to audio extractor by this company Cablematters.
This device will allow you to utilize your apple tv headless (without a tv)

I bought it on Amazon, it was listed as Cablematters 4k HDMI to audio extractor
at the time. This particular unit has HDMI input where you would connect the
Apple TV and has optical and 3.5MM output which can be connected to TV/
headphones/ Speakers for audio only.

Amazon basics also has a version, you just have to make sure it has the outputs
you need.

Subject: Apple TV without a physical screen?

 Hi all,

Does anyone know if the Apple TV will work if it is plugged directly into
a soundbar such as one of the Sonos devices rather than into a tv and
 thence to a soundbar?

I am trying to create a TV sound receiver for a small bedroom and don't
want a full sized TV screen as I can't see it anyway.

I am suspicious that the Apple TV box will complain because it can't see a
 display device..

 Thanks

believe the Playbase connected to the TV with an optical cable and I believe
the small Sonos Ray soundbar also has an optical input.

I should get my new Apple TV 4K this week so I'll also play around with it
hooking it up directly to our Arc, but in our case it doesn't really matter
since I practically never watch or listen to the TV unless it's with my sighted
wife and then of course the TV is on as well.

If a direct connection between the Apple TV and the Sonos Beam really doesn't
work without a TV in between then the only option might be to have some sort of
splitter which extracts the audio but then you still have to have something you
can direct this audio stream to and unless you have another splitter on the
Beam which allows you to hook up an optical cable from the first splitter then
you may have to have a Sonos Port. The Port has rCA analogue inputs and outputs
as well as a Coax digital input and output, but as long as you could get the
audio into the Port, you could then group it with your Beam and play the audio
from the Apple TV that way.

But it would involve a significant amount of gadgets and fiddling around and to
me it would not be worth it.

Alternatively one could try to find out if a Sonos Amp which has an HDMI input
could receive audio from an Apple TV if it were directly connected. Then Gary
could put a Sonos Amp with either bookshelf speakers or in-wall or in-ceiling
speakers into the bedroom.

I can also test this since we have a Sonos Amp and in-wall speakers in our
bedroom so before I put my new Apple TV in its final resting place inside my
entertainment cabinet, I could certainly hook it up to the Sonos Amp and see
what happens. Fort hat matter, I could try this also with our older first
generation Apple TV HD, I believe they called it the fourth generation Apple TV
and it came out in 2015 after the Apple TV third Gen was discontinued. I
thought we already had the first generation Apple TV 4K, but when I checked the
model number which is A1625 and I looked it up I realized we bought it in 2015
and it's just the apple TV HD.

I now ordered the latest Apple TV 4K with 128 Gb of RAM simply because the
price difference to the 64 Gb is not a lot and only the 128 Gb has support for
thread networking which is the new standard necessary for Matter support. For
those who don't know what Matter is they can read the below article from

Well I picked up a SONOS Beam 2 last week and connected it to my APPLE TV 4K
latest version.

I set up the Beam and plugged it into the EARC port on my LG TV and it worked
ok. I switched everything off and re-plugged the Beam into the HDMI port on
the APPLE TV using the SONOS cable which they confirmed supported EARC etc.

The results - nothing! I couldn't get a sound out of the APPLE TV, needless to
say as soon as I re-plugged it into the back of my LG TV it came alive with
Voiceover etc so the APPLE TV was working fine.

I have been doing some GOOGling around and found an APPLE support article
which seemed to suggest that you could plug the APPLE TV into a sound bar to
get DOLBY Audio sound.

When I had the APPLE TV plugged into the LG I had a look around the settings
under video/sound but couldn't find any reference to immersive audio or DOLBY
Audio. The article suggested that if this was the case your surround equipment
settings needed checking. Presumably in this case this means the BEAM.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

RE: Homepod Mini alarms

2022-11-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ronald,

You can change the alarm sound on any Google Nest speaker with a display. If
you have a Google Home or Nest speaker, you can't change the actual alarm tone,
but you can still ask Google Assistant to play a specific song, a song from an
artist or even just a genre and you can also set so-called character alarms.

I just tried this by saying the following:

Hey Google, set a media alarm for 10:47 AM" (it was 10:46 so I just set the
alarm for the next minute to test it).

As soon as I said this Google asked:

And what would you like me to play?

I said:

Eye of the Tiger (that was given as one of the examples in the article for
which I am including a link below).

Google then said:

OK, I'll play the Eye of the Tiger for 10:47 AM

You can also say "Hey Google, set a character alarm for 7 AM" (just as an
example).

Google will say "OK, 7 AM, you can pick Lego, Ninja Turtles or Hatchimals"

If you say Hatchimals there seems to be no further prompting, but if you say
"Lego" or "Ninja Turtles" you have the following options, Google will ask you
to pick one:

For Lego:

Lego Friends

Lego City

Lego Friends

Lego Life

For Ninja Turtles:

Michael Angelo

Raphael

Leonardo

Donatello

April O'Neil

Of course if you know you want Donatello, for example, you can simply say "Hey
Google, set a Donatello alarm for 7 AM" and Google will say "OK, your aalarm
with Donatello is set for 7 AM".

Here is the link to the article from Lifewire:

How to Change the Alarm Sound on Google

Hi,

To all Homepod Mini users. Could you please tell me what the standard alarm
tone is on it? Is it the same as on iPhone the usual alarm sound?

And is it possible to change it to another tone? I don’t mean music, that I
don’t need.

I am asking this because on Google Home/Nest it isn’t possible to change the
alarm tone and you are stuck with the one that comes with the device.

Thanks,

Ronald

2022-11-30 Thread Richard Turner
I just was looking at the Siri settings, under Settings, Accessibility, Siri,
and there is a setting called: Show Apps Behind Siri, which for me is off. I
don't recall setting it. I wonder if that is why there is no message shown
because this is not on?

I don't use Siri this way to the extent others do so have not felt it to be a
problem.

But, maybe check that setting and change it to see what impact that has.

Anyway, I think Apple thinks I’m stupid maybe because they obviously cannot
replicate on their end in regards to Siri and dictation which I think they
should be able to but I think it’s hit or miss with Apple accessibility. you
know, priorities. but I guess if we all just keep doing what we do in regards
to reporting these issues, maybe they’ll get to it like someone else said in
the thread. Much faster hopefully. I know dictation has been really messy for a
very long time, but so has Siri. At least since version 16 I have version
16.1.1. I went from version 15 the last iteration of version 15 to 16.1.1 and
that’s when I discovered issues.

Re: Apple TV without a physical screen - Results

2022-11-30 Thread 'Gary Robinson' via VIPhone
Well I  picked up a  SONOS Beam 2  last week and connected it to my
APPLE TV 4K latest version.

I  set up the Beam and plugged it into the EARC port on my LG TV and it
worked ok. I switched everything off and re-plugged the Beam into  the
HDMI port on the APPLE TV using the SONOS cable which they confirmed
supported EARC etc.

The results - nothing! I  couldn't get a sound out of the APPLE TV,
needless to say as soon as I  re-plugged it into the back of my LG  TV
it came alive with Voiceover etc so the APPLE TV was working fine.

I  have been doing some GOOGling around and found an APPLE support
article which seemed to suggest that you could plug the APPLE TV into a
sound bar to get DOLBY Audio sound.

When I had the APPLE TV plugged into the LG I had a look around the
settings under video/sound but couldn't find any reference to immersive
audio or DOLBY Audio.  The article suggested that if this was the case
your surround equipment settings needed checking.  Presumably in this
case this means the BEAM.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Anyways, I have a feeling with the secondor third generation Apple TV 4K you
will be able to plug it straight into a Sonos Beam or Arc, but hopefully Gary
will report back once he has picked up his Beam and tried it.

Hi,

For what it is worth, I do have my Apple TV plugged into the HDMI port of my
receiver. This is a Marantz receiver. This works fine with the Apple device
and does not require my TV to be connected or on for the Apple device to work.
The Apple device is the newest 4K unit.

Hello all,

Thanks for the feedback. I originally had the old Apple TV HD with its some

arrived last week.

I was so impressed with the new unit, both the well thought out remote and the
speed of the box, I gather the new processor in this unit is some 30% faster
than the older 4K unit, that I decided to see if I could create a sound only
system.

I intend to pick up a Sonos beam as there are some good deals this Black
Friday and will report back on what happens.

This would not help to connect to a Sonos Beam or Arc soundbar which have only
HDMI inputs. Maybe there is another adapter which would convert the audio
coming from your box back to HDMI, but as I said, a lot is possible, but
whether it is practical is another issue. Before I buy all these gadgets I
would simply buy the latest Apple TV 4K which was just released, hook it up to
my Sonos soundbar which from the way it sounds he already has and see if it
works. If not he can either return the Apple TV for a refund or look into
whatever other adapters/extractors are required to make it work.

Hello, to get around this issue, I bought this several years ago. You connect
an HDMI cable to it, and then to the Apple tv, and you send your audio out
through the RCA jacks. It's used for those times when tvs or gaming consoles
don’t have their own audio outputs, and you need to have them for some external
speakers. It's about a thirty dollar item:

I suspect the answer is that the Apple TV won't care, but short of just trying
it, the good folks at Apple could answer your question quickly.

I don't have a physical Apple TV, I just use the app on my iPhone or our Smart

I have gotten this as well, but it's very rare and typically if I then repeat
my request to call whoever it is I want to call it will then be fine. It's the
same when my phone is locked and I use my wired headset to ask Siri to call
somebody, sometimes I get "You have to unlock your device first". This of
course is nonsense so usually I just ask again and it then works. To me these
are minor glitches, but the issue with the magic tap being relatively
unreliable hopefully gets more attention and a fix as long as enough people
contact Apple Accessibility about it.

Re: weird issue with spodify and voiceover

2022-11-30 Thread Wendy Lin
Well I notice a few glitches on Spotify since the update last week. I can’t
seem to preview songs anymore so that can be an issue when we want to create
new playlists on there in the future, how would we know if it’s the right song
if we can’t preview it to make sure? Also adding songs to my playlists I can’t
seem to do anymore neither. Before I was able to swipe up or down with one
finger to get to the add to playlist button. Now It opens a new window and
gives me the option to like the song. Very strange.

RE: stopping dictation

2022-11-30 Thread Richard Turner
What is key in reporting issues, is that Apple receives reports from lots of
different people.
Multiple reports from the same person on the same issue does nothing but take
up time. If only a handful of people are reporting an issue, it could be
something with their particular setup so Apple won't prioritize that.

However, if lots of different people report the same issue, then it is clear to
them it is not an isolated issue.

Just my thoughts.

You would figure that since Siri can actually sound like a natural voice that
it would pick up on natural speech and yes, I have reported this numerous times
since 16 came out to Apple accessibility and I get no response, nor anything to
do with how to troubleshoot it and except one time where they said they
couldn’t replicate the issue. Even my mom and dad are not sight impaired, and
they have a hard time using it even the dictation wrapping this around back to
the dictation subject.

RE: stopping dictation

2022-11-30 Thread deidreandlouise
Siri is not good at recognizing :natural" speech; it often has a particular
syntax it wants. I think Siri recognizes "dial" such and such a person. Even
so, I've had to change names in my contacts before because even if I only have
one Michael, Siri sometimes comes up with a short list of other names
completely unrelated. I find that most annoying too.

Homepod Mini alarms

2022-11-30 Thread Ronald van Rhijn

Thanks,
Ronald

RE: stopping dictation

2022-11-30 Thread deidreandlouise

Hi Mike and Richard.

I found that setting which was, in fact, set to on. It turned it off and then

Hi Paula,

Since I'm sending a reminder note to my self of Richard's suggestion, here's
where Vibration is:

Open Settings / Accessibility / Touch and swipe to, Vibration, and a single
finger double tap turns it on / off.

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Subject: Vibration question revisited

Hi all. I sent this message on Sunday but haven’t heard anything back. Sending
it again hoping for an answer. It’s not a biggy, but I’d like to set vibration
up without having the haptics. I’ve looked through settings and can’t find
where to enable vibration. Probably a very basic question. Thanks, as always,
for any help.

God bless!

weird issue with spodify and voiceover

2022-11-30 Thread Star Gazer
Sometimes when I'm listening to spodify, my phone goes silent, voiceover
appears to be on but speech isn't. Toggling speech doesn't fix this, I have
to turn voiceover off and then back on which is annoying to the point that
I'm thinking of giving up on Spodify. It seems to happen during adds. I am
not touching the phone when it happens and nobody else is either and no we
don't have a cat. Smiles.

Anybody have any insights?
